We’re about to celebrate the end of 2024 and the start of 2025, and I just keep thinking that this brings me one year closer to my dream of becoming a Winter Texan. Well, since I’m actually a homegrown Texan, it brings me one year closer to living the life of a Winter Texan.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my job. After all, the next best thing to living the life of a Winter Texan is hanging out with all of you and helping your park/ resort managers and activity directors find all kinds of adventures for you to enjoy while you’re living it up in the Rio Grande Valley.
Bringing in 2025 also means the arrival of even more of our Winter Texans, those returning and those who are joining us for the first time. I want to thank all of you returning Winter Texans for telling your friends and family members up north about how great it is down here, hanging out on South Padre Island in your shorts and Ts—margarita in hand-while they’re putting on several layers of clothing and shoveling snow. And thank you for telling them about Cruise with Kristi and Sarah’s tours around Texas. We all know word of mouth is the best advertising around.
This is our last issue of Welcome Home Winter Texan for 2024. It’s a time of reflection and a time of excitement. From all of us at Welcome Home Rio Grande Valley, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy Hours! Let’s all ring in 2025 with laughter, fun, and sun.

Your Connection to the Rio Grande Valley

History of the Valley Anthem
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Did you know, the Rio Grande Valley has an anthem? Nearly 100 years old, the tune has faded away somewhat--but not entirely. It is still sung today by travelers--upon returning to the Valley, boosting civic pride at Rotary meetings, and in childhood memories.
“Rio Grande Valley (For We Love Our Valley Home)” was an ode to the region composed by the Forty and Eight Quartette, buddies who had served in World War I: Cott Boling, William Buck, Dick Collins, and N.G. “Nappie” Chatelle.
The group’s name originated from the war, referring to box cars used to transport American troops to the French front. Each car was marked, denoting its load capacity: 40 men or eight horses. They were narrow and
cramped, “A mutual small misery among American soldiers,” according to the website, fortyandeight. org, a society for American veterans.
The men took that “small misery” and turned it into a positive. Often referred to as “‘the famous Forty and Eight Quartette of San Benito”’ in newspaper articles, the men performed at venues around Cameron County and beyond.
According to an October 1928 article in The Brownsville Herald, the Forty and Eight Quartette was set to perform at a national quartet competition when the event was canceled.
“Rio Grande Valley (For We Love Our Valley Home)” was composed in 1928 by Boling, Buck, Collins, and Chatelle, with arrangement by Claire Burton Chase of Los Fresnos. The lyrics:
A place just to spend happy hours. Contentment and peace
Where the friends that you meet Have a spirit of fellowship sweet Oft when I’m blue comes a yearning To this dear spot I’m returning For we love our Valley home Way down upon the Rio Grande Land of yours and land of mine Land of palm trees and the bright sunshine
There we’ll live in Paradise Where roses bloom on every hand
For we love our Valley home Way down upon the Rio Grande
In 1928, the Herald’s “In Our Valley” column--a compilation of local tidbits--announced, “The Valley now has a song.” The song steadily gained popularity through the Quartette’s performances at banquets, luncheon clubs, and live venues. But there were a few hiccups that proved disappointing, according to newspaper accounts. One instance referenced when 2,000 Valleyites welcomed the 2nd Army division detachment in 1937 and only a fraction--reportedly 100--knew the lyrics, sparking the McAllen Chamber of

Commerce to launch a Valley-wide campaign.
An August 1937 McAllen Daily Press Editorial Page column put the call out, urging “SING, VALLEY, SING!” in its headline. It called for “every luncheon club, every school, every legion post, every woman’s organization, and every group which meets regularly to learn the song and sing it.”
The community-wide effort called for clipping the lyrics and singing along when KRGV played the song at the end of the station’s daily broadcast.
In 1938, the Valley Sunday Star-MonitorHerald column “This ’N” That” referenced an “embarrassing moment” that took place at a Thanksgiving luncheon, citing only one out of six women in attendance knew the words to the song. Once again, a call went out for locals to learn the lyrics.
Eventually, the song took hold. By the 1950s, it was being sung in classrooms and civic gatherings across the Valley. A Facebook post about “Rio Grande Valley (For We Love Our Valley Home)” garnered nearly 200 enthusiastic responses last year. While some long-time residents said they had never heard of it, the majority remembered singing it in civic clubs and as school children.

The lyrics for “Rio Grande Valley (For We Love Our Valley Home)” appear in the book named after the song.
The cover of Miriam Chatelle’s book.
“My mother learned it in school, and I first learned it from her,” wrote Kenneth Anderson. “She went to Lyford in the 40s.” Another commenter shared, “I remember singing on the school bus riding to and from football games.”
Many referenced learning it from their music teachers; others said they sang it at Lions, Kiwanis, and Rotary Club meetings; and some said they still do.
And then there’s the book. In 1948, the song became the title of a book by Miriam Chatelle.
Miriam’s husband, Nappie, was a member of the Forty and Eight Quartette. According to a 1948 article in the Herald, Miriam wrote the book to help support her family after her husband passed away. The book originated as an article she wrote on the history of her hometown, Los Fresnos.
The article also reports that Miriam described the Valley “as a house with 30 children, each with a distinguishing personality.”
Various newspaper announcements and reviews of the book allude to it presenting the same sense of pride for the Valley as the song.
“When my sisters and I travel home to the Valley,” writes Sue Clayton, “we start singing that song as soon as we see the palm trees.” •

Spotted In The RGV
Estero Llano Grande State Park Weslaco, TX
By Eryn Reddell Wingert
The Altamira oriole can be spotted at various nature parks across the Rio Grande Valley. This particular one was seen at the Estero Llano Grande State Park around this time a year ago. According to iNaturalist.org, their nests resemble “a small pouch.” The website also shares that while these birds are found in various regions, their range spread into South Texas in 1939.
Hello Travel Friends Let’s go to Luckenback, Texas!
They say Luckenbach is more of a state of mind than a location. What exactly does that mean? Well, I think it means being in a place where you can relax, enjoy a drink, feel that carefree atmosphere, and hear great music that has lyrics you can connect with. It means disconnecting with the hustle and bustle of our busy to-do lists. You lucky retired folks might think this already describes your life, but for the rest of us, it sounds like something we could use a little more of. You may be imagining a large commercial city capitalizing on the familiarity of the Luckenbach name. If you haven’t been before, you may be surprised by its small, quaint, beautiful plainness. When you arrive, you’ll see a small general store filled with cheeky items that might make you laugh or feel nostalgic. Next, you’ll notice a small, wooden, outdoor stage. This stage is always hosting local musicians expressing thoughts and emotions through their music. Right across from that small stage is the thing most people are looking for when they arrive: the bar. This little city has more character than a fiddle in a hoedown.
This unassuming little town has famously hosted Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and many more artists throughout the years. It’s located just north of San Antonio and outside of Fredericksburg. If you’re ever in either of those areas, take a few hours and stop in to see what state-of-mind is all about.
If you want to go check it out with some friends, you’re in luck! Come along with me and join us on our Fredericksburg trip in February. Among many other unique experiences, we’ll be heading to Luckenbach for an evening of fun, music, dancing--and maybe some drinks, too! If you’re interested in tapping into that Luckenbach state of mind, check out our tours and travel at welcomehomergv.com, or give me a call at the office anytime (956-687-5115).

Tangible Touches
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Aphrase we often hear as people enter The Lamb’s Loom is, “It’s so peaceful in here.” It’s true, and as this prayer shawl ministry grows every year, we certainly do not want to ever take that for granted. The laughter, the sharing, the stitching…it’s all the yarn fun in one place! We know God is always working to move in the lives of those who come alongside us, and for that, we are truly grateful. That peace unites us, knits us together, as we gather around projects, share ideas, experience the joy we feel when the Donation Chest overflows (usually weekly!), and delight in the smiles of those who receive our gifts.
The Lamb’s Loom was formed over 10 years ago, and what stories we can share of these gifts given! We are at the end of another season of distributing all of these handmade gifts. Last year, that meant over 5500 items went out--all over the world. We have learned over the years that we all get to play with yarn, enjoy each other’s company, and make new friends while making items for our Donation Chest. Each one of these gifts added to the chest is a tangible touch of encouragement for the people who receive them. What joy there is in the gift of giving. So we stay “knit together,” stitch by stitch, and we hope y’all will join in and stitch it forward with us. The Lamb’s Loom fun is happening, in person, at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We will be closed for Christmas vacation beginning December 23.
Rio Valley Estates
We will begin the new year with our annual Yarn Tasting January 8. Our hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com.
Many blessings during this Christmas season.

In its 125th year, the bird count tradition dates to when officers in the then newly established Audubon Society proposed to take a census of birds rather than hunt them for sport. Globally, the Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count includes destinations and countries from as far north as the Artic Bay; east from St. Jon’s and Ferryland in Newfoundland; west to Southern Guam; and from the northern most area of Alaska south through Canada, the U.S., Mexico, South America and down to Drake Passage in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The annual count is a citizen science survey where volunteer bird watchers provide the census data. The event is conducted by the National Audubon Society, an environmental organization devoted to the conservation of birds. •

Mr. Codos Returns to Pharr Community Theater Final Show December 20
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
The Pharr Community Theater (PCT) once again proudly presents A Tejano Christmas Carol. December 20 is the finale.
This delightful classic from Charles Dickens-and adapted by Pedro Garcia--is set in the RGV, with a cast of 20 local performers who have been in rehearsals since October.
In our tale, the well-known Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Ray Perez, becomes Ezequiel Codos, an RGV attorney and powerful water broker whose greed threatens to dry up the famous Rio Grande River.
Codos, a bitter, greed-driven man, has spent his life chasing wealth at the cost of happiness. As he grows older, his ruthless ways remain unshaken…until three magical spirits intervene. Among them are La Rielera, a brave woman soldier from the Mexican Revolution, played by Erika E. Garza and the enchanting singer Selena, played by Juliette Huerta. Through their visits, Codos begins to experience the power of love and the joys of life, realizing just how much he’s missed. He discovers the true taste of happiness and the undeniable allure of turkey and tamales, especially when shared.
The show is directed and co-produced by Dalia
Bouchée; stage-managed by Lina Ortiz; and produced by the Pharr Community Theater, Co., with Pedro García. This exciting and fun story, told predominately in English, is reflective of Rio Grande Valley culture and humor, shared with the world. Bring the entire family and your friends.
The final two shows are December 19 at the Pharr One Center, 1121 E. Nolana Loop in Pharr, and December 20 at the Pharr Development and Research Center, 750 W. Dicker Rd. Both larger spaces seat 90. Both shows start at 7:30 p.m.

The Christmas Gift
by Chaplain Larry Allen
he Roman Emperor Constantine declared December 25, 336 AD the day to celebrate Christmas. This was probably an attempt to Christianize a couple of pagan Roman celebrations held on that day, one of which involved gift-giving. Early Christians justified this because the Wise Men had brought gifts to Jesus. But it was not until the early 1800s that gift-giving really became popular. I think I can say gift-giving is the central feature of the modern Christmas celebration. Over the course of my life, I have gotten and given hundreds of Christmas presents. But you know what? I only remember a few of those gifts. Let me tell you about my most memorable Christmas gift.
I had just turned five years old. Back then, my family had a small, black-and-white television. My favorite program on TV was Popeye, the sailor man. Popeye was my hero. When someone needed to be rescued, Popeye was always there, ready to help the powerless. He would reach for a can of spinach, squeeze the can, and pop it open. Then he would eat the entire can of spinach. That spinach would transform him into a strong man, ready for the rescue. He would
I do? I asked Santa Clause to bring me some spinach! That Christmas morning, Santa had come. I’m sure he left me some toys, but honestly, I don’t remember. What I do remember are the five cans of spinach he left under the tree for me! I was so excited. I was going to be like Popeye. But when I took the first can in my little five-year-old hand, I could not squeeze it open. My mom had to open it with her little crank can opener. And then I ate some. Oh, brother; it was awful! I could not believe it. This trusted hero had led me to believe that spinach was the best thing ever. But I pressed on because I knew that my muscles would start bulging at any moment. Nope. It never happened. I was still just a scrawny kid. It was the most disappointing Christmas gift ever. The central feature of Christmas is a gift. “For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John3:16 ESV) The very reason we celebrate Christmas: We are acknowledging the significance of Jesus’ birth. He came and lived among us, showing us what God is really like. Then He died on the cross, taking our sin upon himself, dying in our place. Then, three days later, He rose from the dead, conquering sin and death. The greatest gift ever is the gift of Jesus. I gave my life to Him, placing my faith in Him. Now, every Christmas is special because the birth of Jesus saved my life.

I’m Betting on the Old Folks
by Bill Ward
Ifind it amazing, the wide variety of skillsets I possess that today’s younger generations just don’t share. I am an expert at making an operator-assisted phone call with a rotary telephone. I am quite at home butchering a chicken that I have caught with my own chicken catcher.
I can write a real letter--on paper-using cursive. I can drive a car with a clutch and stick shift. I can balance a paper checkbook register. I even know how to turn a television roof antenna by using a rotor, and I can change channels by standing up, walking to the TV, and turning the dial manually.
If the world collapses suddenly and we all have to return to old skills, I am ready. Unfortunately, until then, these and many other skills I possess are absolutely useless today.
How much brain space is consumed with files of old skills I will never use again?
TODAY’S WISDOM:
Every skill you acquire doubles your odds of success. . ~Scott Adams
I am thinking it is a lot. But even if I could, I would never push the delete button on any of it. By learning how to make a call through the operator, I was able to call out to my grandma’s farm any time I wanted to. By sharing the butchering duties when the family gathered at my grandma’s farm, I learned what I was capable of, and I gained great stories to share with my kids. (I bet a good share of you all have chasing headless chicken stories.)
Learning to drive a stick was quality time spent with my dad. He was patient, even when I stalled the engine. Because I could drive a stick, I also got to drive the truck at harvest on my in-laws’ farm later on. Those were fun days.
In the 1950s and 60s, watching TV was family time, after the homework was done and the house chores were finished. We watched family shows: Bonanza, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, I Love Lucy, and many
more you all remember. And every time I made an entry in my checkbook, I got to experience gratitude for the blessings our family had.
I know I am obsolete in many ways, but I sure had a good time getting to this point. I hope I don’t need those old skills anymore because it has been fun learning new skills, too. But if we all ever need to go into survival mode, my money is on the old folks.
I’m just sayin’. •
