RECAP OF CHAPTER 82: Leo Sherer begs everyone to continue to work efficiently and silently, and not to give the Nazis any reason to get more upset with them, after what Binyamin Schvirtz did. Later, David asks his father-in-law why he didn’t tell them all the truth about Binyamin’s phone calls; Sherer says he can’t take the risk on the chance that it’s all a lie, and no one will believe it anyway.
Bentzy’s father makes some discreet inquiries about Wangel’s factory.
At shul, Kush gives Binyamin’s grandfather a report about how Binyamin is doing in his hiding place, but the two immediately break up when Bernard Wangel is seen marching angrily into the shul courtyard.
I heard what you said about the one who came. I didn’t want you to get in trouble because of me.
I’ve left, and I’m not going into any other house.
You told me to take whatever I need; I took a bit of food and the rope that was at the bottom of the trunk.
Thank you for everything.
The unsigned note was the only memento left inside the large linen trunk that Chaya Kush had brought with her as a dowry. The trunk was made of high-quality wood, with a broad metal band at its base. For a quarter of a century, it had been faithfully storing the winter blankets and other sundry items. Over the past half a day, it had helped store something else. Elimelech Kush didn’t need a signature to know who had written
the note. “But how did he leave in broad daylight without being seen?” he asked his wife, Chaya.
“I don’t know,” she said as she shook out a feather quilt, as if Binyamin would come tumbling out of it. “What did he hear?”
“What we said about Bernard at lunch.”
“Ah, yes,” she said with a slight shudder. “Bernard also came to the sewing room, and it was horrible. It’s a miracle that he didn’t figure out who Binyamin’s mother is; otherwise, he would have probably directed all his hollering at her.”
“He knows how to holler and how to threaten,” Elimelech agreed. “But it was special to see Reb Nachum remain calm and unruffled when he came into the courtyard of the shul... Ultimately, Bernard didn’t do anything to him or to Rav Schwartzbrod, baruch Hashem. Actually, to the best of my knowledge, he didn’t hurt anyone throughout the day.”
“They said he broke something at the factory.”
“A chair. Nothing major.” Elimelech tore the note into pieces so
tiny, they were almost invisible. “He mainly just scared everyone.”
“That’s bad enough.”
“Not as bad as what might yet happen,” he said grimly. “But what is worrying me the most is the question of where Binyamin is hiding, if he’s not with one of us.”
“He has a forest, a factory, the building with the offices, the warehouse, the kennels ” she said, motioning with her hand to the open window.
“That’s nothing. A quick scan, and he’ll be found. I think I’ll tell his family that he left.”
“But you’re not allowed to go out now!” she protested. “Why run to tell them?”
“Why tell them? So that they can daven.” ***
It was obvious that no one had visited the slightly sloping roof of the manor house for a long time. Crumbling autumn leaves, the few that weren’t tossed away by the wind, were still scattered there; fresh spring greenery peeked out from between the wooden beams and the shingles.
Binyamin’s feet were planted on the frame of the highest window on the third floor, his hand gripping the drainage pipe attached to the roof, and he pulled himself upward. For now, he was managing fine with this pipe and the protruding window cornices. When he’d have the chance, he’d have to find out who to thank for this—the one who had built this remote summer home a hundred and fifty years ago, or the Jews who were brought here by two Wehrmacht officers, and among doing their other tasks, took the effort to renovate and turn the place into a real house.
To his right was a dark, narrow rectangle that looked like a hole in the roof, and Binyamin quickly crawled toward it. There was a transparent cover that he quickly moved aside, and the rectangle turned out to be the opening to a deep, dark shaft. Binyamin surmised that it was the opening to the chimney that had served in the past as a way to heat the manor house. He had no idea where the actual furnace was. If it was on the first or second floor, it wouldn’t help, because he had nothing to look for there. But if the furnace was on the third floor, that would be ideal for him.
He would wait a few hours, and when he was sure the Wangels had all fallen asleep, he’d find a way to measure the depth of the shaft.
Meanwhile, he lay down on his side, with his face turned toward
the sky. He took out of his pocket some cookies that Mottel’s father had left for him that morning, made a brachah and bit into one.
The moon slowly rose higher in the sky, and Binyamin felt an urge to cry. “Hashem, I ” he whispered. But he discovered that, while he was able to express himself clearly to his father, and in the note to his mother and Naomi, here, he was at a loss for words.
He carefully raised his head. The camp should be spread out at the foot of the manor house, but in the absolute darkness at this hour, he could hardly see a thing. By the dim light of the moon, he could barely discern the trees at the foot of the eastern wall, completely concealing the factory building. On the other side, he saw the sparsely wooded western slope; amidst those trees were the animal kennels. Between these two areas was an almost flat plain, where—with some effort—he could discern dozens of rectangular shadows, which looked like abandoned houses.
Binyamin put his head back down. The shingle that his cheek was touching was cold and a bit moist. “Hashem, I want to get out of here and to take everyone to freedom,” he said finally. “Without anyone getting hurt. I can’t even ask the rav how much hishtadlus I’m supposed to do for this. Please, be with me.” He blinked, and an errant and completely unmanly tear got stuck in his right eye. “And let me feel that you’re with me.” He fell silent again. Then he added a perek of Tehillim, so that he could also rely on Dovid Hamelech’s words, and fell asleep.
When he opened his eyes, the moon was right over his head, high in the sky. He took a deep breath, and crawled again toward the shaft. With careful, quiet movements, he unwound the rope that had been tied around his waist, and scanned with his eyes for an object that he could use as a weight. He found a broken shingle that had been thrown to the edge of the roof, and tied it to the rope.
Again, Binyamin went back to the opening of the chimney and began to release the rope into it. A bit, and then a bit more oops, he felt a change, as the rope apparently hit an obstacle of some sort. Binyamin moved the rope from side to side, to try to release the shingle, in the event that it was just a protrusion. But it seemed that the rope’s journey had come to an end. Binyamin kept holding the rope, and with his second hand, he pulled it back. Now he could check the length of the rope from his fisted hand until the broken shingle. Not too long. Not too long at all. It was the depth of one floor, not more.
Which meant that this chimney led to the third floor, the one the Wangels used the least. They went up there only when they had to don their uniforms or arm themselves with better weapons. He would have wanted go down there this minute, but it was safe to assume that the Wangels would not be going to sleep so early tonight—if at all. And if Bernard would still be awake, the danger could be even greater.
“Someone’s knocking!” Katarina said with a yawn, her eyes red. “Is the front gate locked, Josef?” “Yes.”
“So who do you think it is?”
“One of the Jews,” he said, glancing at the wall clock. “Three-thirty in the morning! Maybe it’s that impudent Schvirtz, coming to turn himself in a second time. And I don’t know if I should be happy that Bernard has already gone to sleep, because I would not want him to strangle the kid or anything, even if he deserves it.”
“We don’t need to be afraid of Hans,” she snapped. “So what if he thinks we should be handling this in a calmer fashion! We’re the ones dealing with it, not him!”
“I’m not afraid!” Her husband’s tone rose as he turned to the door. “But I think he is right. To an extent.”
“Really?” She sounded mocking. “Or did you start thinking that only after two days of us discovering how little deterrent power we really have, as this Schvirtz continues to wander around on our grounds, free and alive?”
“I am seriously considering killing him when I find him.” Josef glanced through the peephole in the door.
“But we’ll talk about that soon. In any case, it won’t be in a heated assault by Bernard.”
“Is it him?” she whispered.
night you won’t get any help from us, that’s for sure. You’re supposed to be in your house right now. Do you have a permit to be outside?”
“It’s an emergency, Herr Wangel. Dr. Katzburg sent me to you urgently. She said that you have this device, something that saves the heart from collapsing!” Eva was crying tears now. “A device that gives an electric shock to the heart. Please!”
“Who doesn’t feel well, Josef?” Katarina asked from inside the room.
“Sherer,” he said, turning around. “Leo Sherer. And they want that medical device—what’s it called?— that Katzburg advised us to buy once when we worried that rescue forces would never be able to get here fast enough, in the event that one of us would stop breathing or something.”
“One of us,” Katarina repeated. “Not one of the Jews! But he’s not just anyone, huh?”
“That’s right,” he said thoughtfully. Katarina came to the door and studied Eva from her feet to her head. “Come to think of it, we should have thought of this when Katzburg made that recommendation: She was obviously thinking about her Jewish brethren! You are all the same Do you know how much we paid for it? It’s something only hospitals have!”
Eva was quiet, her eyes dripping uncontrollably.
“Come back in ten minutes,” Katarina said. “Not one minute before. And pray to your G-d that Bernard doesn’t wake up in the meantime. He’s frustrated enough that we’re not letting him do anything here; he’ll go mad if he realizes we are going to save your father!”
“No,” he said, and opened the door.
“You’re Sherer’s daughter! What do you want?” he barked.
Eva’s voice was trembling. “I’m sorry, Herr Wangel,” she began.
“Excuse the hour, but my father feels horrible. And Dr. Annie says that only you can help him now.”
“We? How? In the middle of the
Eva stood in the yard for ten minutes, trembling, wondering if they really needed this time to find the device, or if it was just a way to drag out their response. After ten minutes she got what she had asked for, but then she had to stand for three more long minutes until Katarina finished explaining to her how vital it was for her take good care of this expensive device. By the time she returned home, it was too late.

Pastrami (1st Cut Brisket) (Weissmandl-Bet Yosef Glatt)
Cholent Pastrami (Weissmandl-Bet Yosef Glatt) .................................................................................
One of the most common frustrations parents have with their teens is dealing with what feels like ungratefulness, entitlement, or a self-centered attitude. Parenting teens is already challenging—but when your teen seems spoiled or unappreciative, it takes it to a new level.
Spoiled behavior doesn’t always show up in obvious ways, it can look like a cold attitude, a lack of motivation, or a resistance to putting in effort. You might find your-
self thinking, where did this come from?
Or how do I fix this?
It’s totally normal to feel confused about whether it’s “just a phase” or a deeper issue. Figuring out what’s typical teen stuff versus signs of entitlement can be tough. But when spoiled behavior takes hold, it can seriously strain your connection with your teens and leave you feeling like you’re on two different planets.
It’s normal for teens to go through a phase where they seem self-centered or entitled. Their brains are still developing—especially the parts that handle empathy, self-control, and long-term thinking. So, things like gratitude, respect, and social awareness don’t always come naturally.
That’s why the teen years are a key time to teach important life skills—like perseverance, thankfulness, and healthy boundaries. These habits aren’t automatic, but with guidance and consistency, they can be learned and strengthened over time.
Potential contributing factors to entitled and spoiled behavior in teens:
1. Parents that are ungrateful and exhibit bad manners.
2. Parenting with guilt. When parents feel guilty about not being present for their children, they will overcompensate by buying and offering gifts, rather than prioritizing quality time and connection.
3. Avoiding conflict and never saying “NO”. Parents want to keep the peace; however, teens will start to expect that everything needs to go their way.
4. Rescuing from natural consequences because it is too painful to see your child suffer. Shielding teens from failure or discomfort denies them valuable learning moments. Without experiencing consequences, they may not develop resilience or self-awareness.
Recently, my client Pessie shared how worn down she feels by her daughter’s constant demands. Her daughter insists on having the latest styles in clothing, shoes—even her backpack and school supplies need to be “just right.” If she doesn’t get what she wants, she yells, screams, and doesn’t let up. It’s exhausting.
Pessie is really torn. On the one hand, she wants her daughter to fit in and feel confident. On the other, it’s putting a serious financial strain on the family, and she doesn’t believe her daughter
should get everything she asks for. Sound familiar? This is such a common scenario.
I reminded Pessie that this isn’t an all-or-nothing situation. She doesn’t have to give in to every demand, but she also doesn’t have to ignore her daughter’s need to feel seen and heard. I encouraged her to have a calm, honest conversation— one that sets boundaries, but also opens the door to connection and understanding.
5 ways to deal with a spoiled teenager:
1. Setting clear boundaries and limits and following through with consequences. When you follow through with consequences, then your teen sees that you mean business and they will learn self-control and respect.
2. The importance of earning things. This may sound a bit old- fashioned but it is a wonderful way for your teens to learn about hard work and appreciation. Rather than giving in to every request, encourage them to work toward what they want.
3. Model gratitude daily. Show them what thankfulness looks like. Talk about what you’re grateful for, thank them when they help, and create a culture of appreciation at home.
4. Get out of the habit of fixing everything for them. Resilience is built through struggle. The sense of entitlement will fade when teens see that they can handle hard things.
5. Make time for connection.
Entitlement often masks disconnection. Spend time with your teens doing something they enjoy—without lecturing. It helps them feel seen, which makes them more open to your guidance.
Chaya, one of my clients, recently came to me with a challenge many parents face: how to encourage her 19-year-old son to earn the things he feels entitled to, like a car.
Her son had been eyeing a car for some time, believing that it was something he “needed.” However, Chaya felt strongly that if he was old enough to drive and own a car, he was old enough to pay for it himself.
The problem? Chaya wasn’t sure how to approach the conversation. She feared her son would “freak out” at the idea. After all, all of his friends had their own cars—and none of them had to pay for them. This was a tough spot for Chaya, as she didn’t want to create tension or make her son feel unsupported.
After coaching her through the process, I reminded her of a key point: confi dence is key. Instead of approaching the conversation with uncertainty, I encour aged her to speak to her son from a place of confidence, setting clear boundaries without feeling guilty.
I also recommended that her husband be present to help show a united front. Having both parents on the same page would reinforce that this wasn’t just one parent’s decision, but a family value.
By being firm, clear, and united, Chaya could help her son understand that re sponsibility comes with privilege, and that earning something—whether it’s through work, saving money, or contrib uting in other ways—is a valuable lesson that would serve him well.
Let’s remember, the goal isn’t perfec tion - it’s teaching your teen important life skills while keeping your relation ship strong. With patience, empathy, and clear communication, you can guide your teens through this phase without sacrificing your values or your sanity.

QI am 27 years old and in shidduchim for many years. I have to say that my way of coping through stressful days is via eating. A lot. I wish I could stop myself but food just brings me to a calmer place and gives me the reprieve from my emotions. Doing this for many years has caused me to gain weight and I am feeling very stuck. Can you give me some pointers or support, even though it will help, a little bit? Thank you
AEmotional eating is one of the most common coping tools people turn to when they’re overwhelmed, anxious, or just plain tired of the emotional roller coaster. You’re seeking comfort, grounding, and a moment of peace—and food happens to be the tool that has worked. For a while, at least. But as you’ve wisely noticed, this tool isn’t helping anymore. It’s leaving you with physical discomfort, weight gain, and a sense of being stuck. The good news? Even though change feels daunting, it is possible—and even small steps can start to shift the pattern.
Here are some supportive and practical pointers that may help you begin the process of freeing yourself from emotional eating and reclaiming a healthier relationship with food—and yourself.
1. Acknowledge your emotions without judgment: Emotional eating is often a response to feelings we don’t want to face: rejection, loneliness, uncertainty and disappointment. These emotions are especially present when you are in shidduchim for a long time without the outcome you hope for.
Before reaching for food, try asking yourself:
What am I actually feeling right now?
What triggered this need for comfort?
Name it without judgment. Saying “I feel sad and tired” is not weakness—it’s emotional strength. It’s awareness. That moment of pause can already interrupt the automatic behavior.
2. Separate physical hunger from emotional hunger: Physical hunger builds gradually and can be satisfied with a variety of foods. Emotional hunger feels urgent and specific (“I need chocolate now!”). A helpful trick: Rate your hunger from 1–10. If you’re under a 5, it’s likely not physical hunger. When emotional hunger strikes, try a short distraction before eating. Go outside, write in a journal, or even just set a timer for
10 minutes. You may still choose to eat afterward, but the delay helps you make a more conscious choice.
3. Create a comfort menu (not made of food):
What else makes you feel calm, soothed, or grounded? It might be:
• Taking a warm shower
• Listening to calming music
• Lighting a candle and sitting quietly
• Talking to a friend
• Stretching or going for a walk
Make a list of at least 5 non-food comforts you can turn to. When you feel the urge to emotionally eat, reach for this menu instead. You don’t need to feel like doing them—just start. The feeling often follows.
4. Seek support, not perfection: You’re navigating the emotional stress of dating/shidduchim, societal pressure, and personal expectations. That’s a lot. You don’t need to go through this alone. Whether it’s a therapist, a coach, a support group, or a friend you trust, having someone to talk to can reduce the pressure—and provide healthy accountability.
If possible, look for professionals who specialize in emotional eating or body image work. You deserve someone who understands your journey. It would also be safe to have an “emergency food list” of foods that you like, that can serve you well, physically and emotionally that you should have handy for when you will need it. Stories that make the song play in your head and morph into something greater than the sum of lyrics and melody; an impetus for introspection and growth.
Based on a Tefila we say on Monday and Thursday, this song was composed by Abie Rotenberg in 1990
Class was over for the day. Curfew was several hours away. It was time to celebrate. Why? Well, every day is worth celebrating, especially when you’re in seminary and the world is yours.
“Devoiry, did you ever go to Gleeda?”
“Huh? Never heard of that one.”
“It’s a really cool ice cream store at the other end of town. Wanna join me for some delicious scoops, or a razzle? They have the most exotic flavors and even some edible sugar-free versions…”
“Actually, I’m not. I’m leaving for Israel in a few days.”
“What are you planning to do there?” Devoiry asked, and was treated to a pinch by Shaindy.
To their surprise, Avigail motioned for them to wait as she made her way to the table and sat down beside them.
Just then, their ice cream arrived.
“Eat, eat. Your ice cream’s gonna melt. I’ll sit here with you until the next customer shows up.”
“Great!” Shaindy took a spoon and scratched the nuts off the tippy top of her pistachio scoop.
“Shaindy, you know I’m always up for a party. Let’s go.”
One car service ride later found the twosome at Gleeda. Surprisingly, the store was empty, and they took their time to peruse the menu. All you could hear was the sound of them breathing and the ticking of the clock overhead. Finally, they made their orders. Then it was time to wait. There was no rush but the silence was a bit unnerving, if not downright awkward. Devoiry took a stab at making small talk with the woman, or rather the girl, behind the register.
“You’re lucky to be working at such a fun place.”
“Totally!”
“What’s your name?”
“Avigail,” she answered, flicking her long, dark bangs away from her face.
“Nice. I’m Devoiry and she’s Shaindy.”
“Cool. By the way, today’s my last day here.”
“Really?” Shaindy piped in, “Are you switching jobs?”
“What were we saying again? Israel. Yes. Why are you going to Israel?”
Avigail paused.
“Ummm…it’s really not your derech.. It doesn’t match your hashkafa…” she faltered.
“Come on, you can tell us. We’re friends already..”
“Well…” she stared at her shiny, pink nails, “I’m joining the Israeli army.” Looking up, she grinned impishly, “I want to be part of Bias HaMoshiach.”
Putting on a cool facade, Shaindy continued eating her ice cream, slowly savoring each lick. Devoiry said a belated, “Oh.”
They shouldn’t have been taken aback; after all, Avigail had warned them that she was doing something out of their box. Quickly, they switched the topic and found plenty to schmooze about.
The conversation ebbed and flowed, and the two sheltered seminary girls pieced together the story of Avigail’s life. She hailed from a frum family in a nearby town but somehow had fallen between the cracks. Learning difficulties…family issues…
social challenges. She was sharing a basement with some friends and had been working at the ice cream store for the past year and a half. A lost soul, wandering, searching for happiness and fulfillment…and most of all, a listening ear.
“So you’re chassidish? I’ve never really spoken to chassidish girls yet. Can I ask you a question? It’s my turn, I guess.”
“Go right ahead”, Devoiry shot back.
“Don’t you ever feel stifled?”
Shaindy and Devoiry glanced at each other and then back at Avigail. This was totally for the books. From the books. Out of the books. A classic Baal Teshuva story.
As usual, it was Devoiry who found her tongue first.
“No. We’re perfectly happy with our lives as they are.”
Shaindy nodded vigorously, wiping the ice cream drippings from under her chocolate-covered cone.
They spoke about the warmth of family, their rich seminary experience until they noticed the darkened skies.
“It’s almost curfew! We’d better get going.”
Shaindy politely turned down Avigail’s offer for a ride (a fellow roommate was on the way) and Devoiry thanked her again for her company.
Avigail escorted them to the door, sizing them up with a mix of amusement and admiration.
“You guys are for sure in shidduchim, right?”
“Yup! For all you know, we could get engaged tomorrow.”
This wasn’t about debating the benefits of getting married young versus taking the long route; it was a question emanating from a sincere Yiddishe heart.
“Give me your names. I want to daven for you.”
“She’s joining the army…asked us a million questions…was wearing a mini skirt…comes from a regular, frum family…”
“Hey, we should ask her for her full tehilim name!” Devoiry announced.
Eager for further adventure, Shaindy undertook to track Avigail down. She called the ice cream store too many times to keep track of, but somehow, Avigail never picked up or was available whenever she called.
“Hashem knows who she is,” Shaindy told Devoiry after another frustrating day of chasing the elusive, wandering soul.
“Let’s daven for Avigail, for her yiddishkeit, for her happiness.”
It was disappointing, to say the least; they wanted their story to continue. Maybe they could even convince her to stay in New York, to come for Shabbos. A perfect tale for Project Inspire or Touched By a Story.
On second thought, man’s efforts aren’t always met with success. But Tefillos, especially for spiritual requests, always yield results.
At 12 am, Devoiry twists and turns as her mind takes her to faraway places….
There she is, the slim, dark-haired Avigail standing at an Egged bus stop. Dressed in an IDF uniform she lugs a heavy knapsack as she waits for the next bus. Avigail waves her phone in front of her face in a feeble attempt to cool herself in the blazing heat. Her feet begin to sweat in those stifling army boots and she thinks about the agonizing training ahead. In this moment of silence, the thought gnaws at her conscience, Why am I here? Is joining the Israeli army really the best way to bring Moshiach?
Grabbing a pen and paper, they scribbled their names, touched by this unexpected gesture.
A short honking sound sent them to the outer door and they waved good bye.
“Daven for me, I’m in such pain,” Avigail called out, her voice ringing in their ears as they headed into the car.
Hindy, their gracious driver, raised her eyebrows.
“Who was that?”
The story came tumbling out.
There is no way she can put herself fully into her job when she doubts her position. Some sweet Yerushalmi girls pass by, chatting amiably. She remembers Shaindy and Devorah, those sweet, innocent and lovable girls from faraway Brooklyn and mumbles a prayer for them. They’re praying for me too, she recalls. Boarding the bus with hesitant steps, her heart flutters with hope. Sometime, somehow, somewhere, she’ll figure this all out. She’ll find her way home.
Along with all of Acheinu Kol Beis Yisroel.
