RECAP OF CHAPTER 80: Leo tells David that he doesn’t believe the Nazis don’t really control the world. But after hearing that Binyamin went to turn himself in to the Wangels, he lets all the gathered Jews go back home or to work.
Binyamin shows the broken walkie-talkie device to the Wangels and says that he broke it after trying it out, because he had cursed the Nazis while on it and was afraid it had recorded him. As Wangel deliberates, with his gun in his hand, about what to do to Binyamin, Binyamin turns and runs away.
Dr. Katzburg,
I’d appreciate if you could send me something calming for my Rechel.
Thank you, Sarah Liba
Meir, Chani’s son, silently took the little brown glass bottle that the doctor handed him at the door of the clinic. “Tell your grandmother that I trust her not to overdo it!” Dr. Katzburg instructed him. “Not more than two teaspoons an hour!” It was four minutes to nine, and Meir ran as fast as he could. Aunt Rechel’s little house was suddenly crowded: Babbe and Zeide were there, as was his mother, and Aryeh, his brother, with Naomi, and Rechel herself, of course, sitting on the bed
silently.
Only Binyamin was absent.
“Thank you, zeeskeit,” Babbe said as she took the bottle form him. “Naomi, bring me a spoon, please. What did the doctor say, Meir? Two teaspoons?”
“Yes. Two an hour,” the boy replied. “Mamme, should I go home now?”
“Will you make it in time?” she asked him.
“Let him run,” Zeide said hoarsely. “It’s not good for him to be here now, Chani. And even if he gets there a minute after nine, nothing will happen. In case you didn’t notice, none of the Wangel family members have been seen around here this whole day.”
“It looked like they were making an effort not to meet me,” Chani said, her eyes fixed on her young son, standing at the door. “Since we came back from the levayah, I haven’t seen anyone. I straightened up and cleaned the kitchen like I always
do, prepared the supper, and then left. There was one point when I heard faraway shouting from the big sitting room or one of the other rooms there, but I was too far to hear what they were saying…”
Meir quietly wished everyone a good night, and only Aryeh, his brother, walked him to the door, an encouraging hand on his shoulder.
“It’s going to be alright, Meir’ke,” he whispered. “B’ezras Hashem, everything will be fine. Don’t worry.”
said firmly. “They might take you as a hostage or something like that.”
“And if I stay here, they can’t do that?” She sounded like herself: terrified to death for her son, frightened at the possibilities that no one dared put into words, but focused.
“They won’t kill us?” The boy’s eyes were large and round.
“I don’t think so. They want us to keep working for them for lots more years.”
“And Binyamin? Will they kill him?”
“I really hope not.”
“Where is he, anyway?”
“No one knows. But wherever he is…Hashem is surely with him. Run quickly, Meir, so Tatte shouldn’t worry about you at home.” His eyes followed the small figure that fled down the path, and then he closed the door and went back into the main room, just in time to hear Babbe’s comment.
“Well, it’s pretty understandable why they are staying at the manor house now. I’m assuming it’s really not clear to them what to do in this situation.”
“Let them stay with this lack of clarity for as long as possible,” Chani said gravely.
“Sometimes these doubts are worse,” Zeide replied as he glanced at his daughter sitting motionlessly on her bed. “Are you okay, Rechel?”
She nodded, pale and silent. Her fingers were gripping the last page of her mother’s notebook, the letter Binyamin had left her.
“We have to try and find out what’s with him,” Chani whispered to her mother. “The best one to do that would probably be you, or Rechel herself. But right now, it sounds as inappropriate as can be…”
“I think I’m going to go to Katarina,” Rechel said suddenly. “I’ll ask her directly if Binyamin is with them, and what is happening with him.”
“You can’t go, Rechel,” her mother
“It’s different than going and actively placing yourself in danger,” her father replied. “And there’s nothing to ask; I already told you— Leo Sherer went to Wangel earlier, and Wangel told him that Binyamin had turned himself in and that they were ‘waiting for additional confessions.’”
“From who?”
“It’s not clear. There are rumors that the conversation Binyamin had on the radio device was with David Elkovitz, but his father-in-law doesn’t let him go, no matter what.”
“Let Elkovitz not go, I’ll be very happy for him.” Rechel stood up.
“The only one that does interest me is my son. It’s not enough for me to know that he turned himself in—I want to know what they did to him.”
“You’re not going, Rechel!” Her mother almost pushed her back down onto the bed. “You’re not going, do you understand me? We’ll try to think of other ways to find out what we can.”
“I’m not angry at him,” Rechel said suddenly. “The truth is, I realized that at some point he would get up and do something. Binyamin is smart. He once heard that Asher’s sudden death was under strange circumstances, and he also realized that I’m hiding something relating to one of his notebooks.”
“Notebooks?” Naomi moved closer to her mother. Mamme had known something all these years?
“I came to visit him in the clinic after he fell in the garden, a few hours before he suddenly passed away.” Everyone in the room had to strain to hear her. “He wrote to me, with effort, in a notebook he had with him, that Bernard had told him today something crazy, and if it was true…we are living in a terrible lie.” She sighed and stood up again. “I asked him what Bernard had
7:55 9:21
said. He deliberated a bit, and then wrote: ‘There really are no more Nazis.’”
“No more Nazis…” Naomi murmured. And Binyamin wasn’t even there with whom to exchange glances.
“Suddenly, Katarina entered the clinic. She was furious, railing about why healthy people were allowed to go into the clinic; then they’d spread illness and germs in the camp. I hurried to tear the paper out of the notebook and stuffed it into my sleeve. Asher suddenly began to whisper things that were completely unrelated.” She swallowed.
“I thought maybe everything he had written to me was a hallucination, because of the fall. I went out, and a few minutes later she also came out, with his notebook. I didn’t dare go back in.” Her eyes were dry. “I thought maybe over the years he had seen something and written about it in his notebooks, but I didn’t go in and I didn’t ask. I was afraid to see him this way: weak, injured, and confused.”
She couldn’t continue.
Naomi sat up. “I’ll go to the manor house, Mamme.”
“You won’t!” Rechel fixed her with a fiery gaze. “It’s enough that I’ve already sacrificed two—” She fell silent as there was a knock at the door.
Zeide Nochum carefully went to open it. The knocks were too gentle to be one of the Nazis, but who knew what kind of news was waiting on the other side of the threshold.
It was Elimelech Kush, Mottel’s father. He glanced behind him, and then slipped inside and closed the door. “Is everyone here family?” he asked, without waiting to be invited inside. “Can I speak quietly?”
“Yes,” Aryeh replied, after a moment’s silence.
“Binyamin is in my house.” ***
“Listen, listen!” Hans Kafnika raised his voice to be heard over Josef Wangel’s hysterical tone. “First of all, calm down—nothing happened yet. The kid was playing with an
internal communications device, right?”
“That’s what he says, but I wasn’t able to find out more about it from him. In any case, such a thing must not happen!” Wangel howled into the phone. His nerves—the few that were not completely shot—were on the verge of exploding.
“Of course, of course, and we also must not act hastily. So he came to you, turned himself in, and then ran away again.”
“Right.”
“So, we certainly can decide right now that all of us, all those who know the secret, are setting out first thing in the morning to the camp, and we’re going to leave no stone unturned until we find him, okay? Or, you can detain all the members of his family and announce that if he doesn’t turn himself in a second time, they will be killed instead of him, right?”
“Right.” Josef sipped the drink in his cup. He’d stopped counting how much he had drunk since this horrendous day had begun. And he could not lose his wits now. On the other hand, without these drinks, he could not possibly think.
“With either one of these ways, you might get to him, but what will you gain? Dreadful anger and resentment on the part of the Jews. Those first days of the camp, when your father and Katarina’s father ran the place and allowed themselves these things, are over, you know.”
“It’s easy for you to talk. You aren’t here, deep inside this whole thing, the way we are.”
“It’s not such a big deal, Josef. I’m very involved in whatever goes on here, and it’s all quiet, I promise you. And I check every half hour, and I will continue to check. I can always just smooth things out in the event it becomes necessary.”
“As long as we aren’t actually discovered.”
“The risk is very remote, Josef. And it’s not worth it for you to alter the whole way you conduct yourself with your Jews, because of it. If the risk does become greater, and we decide it’s an emergency, you’ll
start to do things differently.”
“I’ll have to decide about that. The one who decides here is me, the one at the scene of the danger, Hans. With all due respect, it’s not you.”
“You’ll decide, we’ll decide—that’s not the issue. The main thing is that since this camp was established, the appreciation of the workers has increased from year to year. Now you want to change the approach and start to rule over them with terror? Have you thought about how much manpower you’d need for that?”
“So help me, you and all the others!” Josef’s voice came out like a hoarse shout. “Why are we paying you all these years, if not for your help?”
“Without us, you wouldn’t have survived, and you know it—without our constant supplies and funding, and smoothing over things in government offices. Maybe go and learn something from your Jews on how to be grateful.”
Josef muttered something unintelligible.
“So if you want to act foolishly,” Hans’s voice was sharp and biting, “and to go and fight with those Jews because of a silly game of one of the youngsters, go and do it. And destroy the idyll in the camp that your father and your wife’s father established with such effort. That’s it—I don’t have anything else to tell you.”
“Alright, alright, I heard you.” Wangel was chastened like a little boy. “Truth to be told, we haven’t done anything yet. We just told Sherer that we are still waiting for those who cooperated with Schvirtz to turn themselves in too— and honestly, we did not tell him that Schvirtz himself fled right after he came here. It was too humiliating for me.”
Katarina murmured something.
“But Katarina is asking, what if the kid did make contact with people outside the camp and told them about this place? Maybe it’s only a matter of time until they get here!”
“I’m telling you—there can be no police directive without me knowing about it. And if you don’t want to lose everything, continue maintaining some tension among the residents. But don’t overdo it!”
“My Bernard is on his way over here.”
“He’s the last creature that needs to be there now, Josef!”
“What can I do, he heard the story and decided to come. After all, what can happen if he catches Schvirtz and kills him? One Jew, that’s all! We killed his father too, and nothing happened.”
“First of all, must I remind you that there is no replacement for that boy’s work? And second, you did it secretly then; they didn’t know, and they didn’t rebel. And third—even then, your Bernard was to blame. Rein him in, Josef, rein him in! For your good and for the good of all of us.”

These dairy loaded fries are the perfect side dish and will be wiped clean before you can even plate it. Each bite bursts with flavor. For an easier version, oven bake frozen fries according to package instructions and call it a day. If you’re a mushroom lover, double the sauce since it might disappear while you “taste” it!
Ingredients:
3-4 Idaho potatoes, thinly sliced in circles
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 1/2-2 lbs mushrooms, sliced
1 onion, sliced
1/4 cup whole milk
1/4 cup heavy cream
Salt and pepper to taste
5 Tbsp oil
Directions:
1. Place your cut potatoes in iced water until ready to fry. Before frying, dry well to get the crispiest potato chips.
2. In a medium saucepan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and sauté until translucent. Add mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes. Add the chopped garlic and cook until most of the liquid cooks down.
3. Once cooked down, add salt, pepper, whole milk and heavy cream. Bring to a boil. Lower and cook down for 8-10 minutes.
4. Top fried potatoes with the mushroom mixture and fresh parsley.
This hash between eggplant parmesan and lasagna is out of this world delicious!! It freezes beautifully for advanced prep. It’s that perfect cheesy, savory dish you’re looking for!
Ingredients:
2 medium eggplants, sliced thinly lengthwise
1 package lasagna noodles (pre boiled or regular)
1 1/2-2 cups mozzarella cheese
Cheese Mixture Ingredients:
16 oz ricotta cheese
1 cup mozzarella cheese
1 egg
5 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped
Sauce Ingredients:
1 bottle of your favorite marinara sauce (I used Tuscanini zesty marinara sauce)
1 cup water
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup whole milk
3 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped
Directions:
1. Generously sprinkle salt on both sides of the eggplant slices. Let sit for 15 minutes. (The salt removes the bitterness.) Rinse well and pat dry.
2. Heat a generous amount of oil in a large frying pan. Fry eggplant slices on both sides until golden. Set aside.
3. Combine all cheese mixture ingredients in a large bowl.
4. Combine all sauce ingredients in a large bowl.
5. Preheat oven to 350°. Assemble the lasagna. In a 9x13 pan, place a layer of lasagna noodles at the bottom. Pour some of the sauce to cover the noodles. Sprinkle a handful of mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce. Add a layer of fried eggplant, followed by a layer of cheese mixture. Repeat until pan is full.
6. Cover well and bake for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, higher the oven to 475° and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes. For maximum color and crisp, broil for 5 minutes after baking.
Dear
If you’re the mother of a teenage boy, you’ve probably been here: You ask how his day was.
“Fine.”
You ask what he learned. “Stuff.”
You ask if everything’s okay. “Yeah.” (shrug) Suddenly, you’re wondering how the boy who used to tell you everything now speaks in Morse code.
You're not alone. In the frum world, boys carry a lot — yeshiva pressure, social dynamics, religious expectations — and they often don't have the tools or the space to process it all. The good news? They do want connection. Just not through interviews. What they need is subtle, steady invitation.
Here’s how you can create that.
A mother shared that her 14-year-old son would come home from yeshiva, grab a snack, and retreat straight to his room. At first, she tried asking questions, checking in, even gently reminding him to spend time with the family — but he only pulled away more. Eventually, she let go of the conversation goal and just started being around when he was. She’d sit at the kitchen table reading a book when he came home, without saying much. One day, he came in, tossed his bag down, and muttered, “Rebbi said something today that really bugged me.” That was it — the beginning of the connection coming back.
What helps:
You don’t need to do anything special. Just be there. Your quiet presence — no questions, no pressure — sends a stronger message than words: I’m here when you’re ready.
2. Stop Asking “How Was Your Day?”
A mother shared that her son gave her nothing but one-word answers. So one day while folding laundry, she asked, “If today was a weather report, what would it be? Sunny, cloudy, or full- on tornado?” Her son laughed — and said, “Mildly depressing drizzle.” That led to an actual conversation about feeling overwhelmed in shiur.
Try this instead:
• “What was the weirdest thing that happened today?”
• “Who made you laugh?”
• “Which part of the day dragged the longest?”
3. Bite your tongue (Even When You're Right)
A boy told his mother he bombed a test in yeshiva. She nearly launched into a “You should’ve studied!” motherent, but caught herself and just said, “That must feel awful.” Her son exhaled and said, “Yeah. I actually did study. Just blanked out.” That’s when he started opening up about his test
anxiety — something he never admitted before.
Try this:
Instead of advice, try:
• “That sounds frustrating.”
• “Want to talk it out, or just vent?”
• “Do you want help or space right now?” Sometimes the most loving thing is to not say the thing.
A mother told me her son came home from yeshiva, muttered “Hi,” and disappeared into his room. So, she started leaving a snack by his door and walking away. A few days later, she found a note: “Thanks. I was starving.” A few weeks later, he started eating in the kitchen again.
Try this:
Your son may not want conversation — but he wants connection. Quiet kindness goes a long way:
• A warm towel ready after his shower.
• Pick up something he mentioned once (like a certain brand of candy or notebook) and leave it on his bed.
• Make his favorite Shabbos dip or side dish, even if no one else in the family eats it.
One boy told his mother that a friend was caught vaping. She nearly jumped in with a full-out speech — but instead, she breathed, nodded, and said, “Wow. That’s heavy.” Her son looked relieved. “Yeah… I don’t even know what I think about it.” That moment of not freaking out made her a safe person to come back to.
Try this:
When your son shares something hard or unexpected, stay steady. He’s watching your face more than your words. Show him you can handle the truth — even when it’s messy.
A mother told me her 16-year-old son had stopped joining the family for supper. She felt hurt — after all, she was making his favorite meals. But instead of confronting him, she quietly started plating his food and leaving it on the counter with a sticky note: “In case you’re hungry later. Love you.” No guilt. No sarcasm. Just quiet consistency. One night, she heard him heating it up. A week later, he asked, “Are we having that rice thing again soon?” That was his way of saying: I see you seeing me.
The kindness? She let him rejoin the table when he was ready — and kept the door open in the meantime.
A mother told me her son never opens up — unless he’s in the kitchen at 10:30 p.m. making toast. “So that’s your new therapy session,” I said. “You’re a night-shift mother now.” She laughed — and leaned into it. Two slices of toast at night led to more connection than a hundred “So how was school?” attempts.
Try this:
A joke. A look. A question. These are the threads — and if you gather enough, they form a bridge.
He may not tell you what’s going on. He may roll his eyes.
He may answer in shrugs and sighs.
But he’s still watching you. Listening. Taking in how safe it feels to talk to you — or not. Your job isn’t to make him talk. Your job is to stay soft enough, steady enough, and patient enough that when the moment comes… he knows exactly where to go.
Right back to you.

Hidden Courage presents four powerful accounts of Jewish resilience—Rabbi Paysach Krohn on surviving a stroke, Shai Graucher on coping with the loss of his father Dedi, Yad L’Achim rescuer Koby on his daring missions into Arab villages, and Rabbi Elchanan Danino on the loss of his son Ori HY”D in Gaza.
BY: MORDECHAI WEINTRAUB
Following last year's groundbreaking success of Unbroken, the most‑watched Tisha B'Av film in the Jewish world, Yad L'Achim proudly unveils its extraordinary new documentary, Hidden Courage. This moving presentation features four inspirational stories of people who overcame extraordinary odds and discovered their hidden courage. Hidden Courage will take you on an emotional journey and inspire you to keep going.
Rabbi Paysach Krohn—renowned throughout Klal Yisrael as a beloved maggid, mohel, and author—shares an intensely personal experience: his remarkable recovery from a frightening stroke. His moving reflections on vulnerability, emunah, and the power of heartfelt tefillah offer deep encouragement to those struggling with life's unexpected hardships.
Rabbi Elchanan Danino courageously recounts the story of his son, Ori Danino HY"D, a brave young soldier who made the ultimate kiddush Hashem. Ori—known for his kindness and dedication to others—gave his life heroically while rescuing friends during an attack in Gaza. Rabbi Danino's heartfelt message speaks directly to the Jewish soul, emphasizing that even amidst unimaginable grief, a life devoted to chesed and mesiras nefesh can generate enduring strength.
of the four featured stories is a powerful lesson in resilience, emunah, and the hidden strength within every Jew. Including you!
Hidden Courage is hosted by the widely respected author and lecturer Rabbi Nachman Seltzer, together with Nesanel Gantz. The film is more than an emotional narrative; it provides powerful insights and practical inspiration for viewers of every age and background.

GEDOLEI YISROEL OFFER GUIDANCE
REGARDING MANY MAJOR HASHKAFAH
ISSUES FACING BACHURIM TODAY BY
CHAIM GOLD
“Our Torah learning is bringing the entire yeshuah to all of Klal Yisrael. The reason for this is, that when we learn Torah, this brings us closer to Hashem, and when we are closer to Hashem, we merit siyatta d’Shmaya. We and all the Yidden in Eretz Yisrael can merit siyatta d’Shamaya only when there is a tremendous amount of Torah being learned.
“When you are in yeshiva gedolah, there may come a time when you have to be very careful. You should know that there might be people who try to convince you to join the army. They may tell you that there is a chareidi program. You should know that it is not permitted to go to the army. Each and everyone of you is obligated to learn Torah. That is the key to our hatzlacha in Eretz Yisrael!”
Those were the passionate words of HaGaon HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, in a seminal address to thousands of bachurim at Dirshu’s annual “Seder Hachana” event for bachurim who are completing yeshiva ketana. Indeed, it was an unforgettable scene. More than four thousand bachurim from all over Eretz Yisrael, all the same age, converged on the Armanot Chen Halls in Bnei Brak to hear guidance from senior Gedolim. The upstairs floor of the hall, the downstairs floor of the hall, the streets and all the hall’s environs were full of bachurim. Those who could not get in watched on screens.
In addition to being addressed by the Gedolei Roshei Yeshiva, HaGaonim HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, shlita, HaRav Dovid Cohen, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Chevron, HaRav Messoud Ben Shimon, shlita, Sephardic Rav of Bnei Brak and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Ohr Elitzur, and Rav Yaakov Shternshus, shlita, Mashgiach of Yeshiva Shaarei Shmuos they were also treated to an address by Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita, Nasi of Dirshu.
There was also a unique shailos and teshuvos session wherein many questions about how to be successful in yeshiva gedolah were posed to the three panel members, HaGaon HaRav Yehoshua Eichenstein, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Yad Aharon, HaGaon HaRav Bunim Schreiber, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Nesiv Daas, and HaGaon HaRav Chaim Peretz Berman, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva at the Ponevezh Yeshiva. The event was also transmitted live to thousands of bachurim in locales around the world.

Just in time for the Nine Days!
from Manhattan
Call to schedule your most convenient time of the day to serve your family and friends with a nutritious and tasty lunch and or dinner:
Stories that make the song play in your head and morph into something greater than the sum of lyrics and melody; an impetus for introspection and growth.
Even in the most concealed of concealed places, certainly Hashem, is also found there. For (Hashem says) I stand with you, even through the hard times that befall you.
Inspired by the words from Likutei Maharan, ונ הרות, with the second line added by the composer. This song was composed in Israel by Shaya Gross in 2014 and sung by Yoeli Klein
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, or so they say. What is a mother’s most prized possession?
In the words of a friend:
I asked my husband for a birthday present. No, I don’t need any fancy jewelry or even a night out at a restaurant. All I want is a good night’s sleep.
Standing at the helm of a bustling household with many little and not-so-little people vying for your attention nearly around the clock is a blessed duty. Of course, this is a job mothers wouldn’t trade for anything but nonetheless, it requires reserves of physical and emotional stamina. And sleep is perhaps the most significant source of this superhuman strength.
While newborn infants are the primary source of midnight wakeup calls, even older children occasionally need Mommy in the late PM or early AM hours.
“I need a drink!”
“There’s a monster in the closet!”
“What’s that noise outside? I’m so scared!”
“I forgot to do my homework.”
Then of course, there is the call of nature. “I need the bathroom. But it’s so dark in the hallway. Mommy, take me!”
Yitty, a mother of seven, looked forward to recharging her batteries each night, leaving room for the possibility of a rude awakening.
The three oldest, at 13, 10 and 8, were generally independent.
Baby Yitzchok slept through the night, except when he didn’t.
Shulem was prone to nightmares.
Leah had a hard time settling down, and often needed to be tucked in multiple times.
But Shiffy scored an A+ in sleeping. At age 6, she went into bed at 7 pm and often needed to be cajoled out of bed at 7:30 in the morning. Which
made this incident so outstanding, bizarre, even.
“M-o-o-mmy!”
Yitty blinked her eyes and stared at the fluorescent digits near her bed. 3:26 it read. Her bones ached and there was nothing she wanted to do more than sink deeper into her pillow and turn over to the other side. But someone needed her.
“Mommy,” the whisper got louder.
“Who’s there?” Yitty croaked, as she washed negel vasser.
“It’s Shiffy.”
“What’s the matter?”
“I need the bathroom. I’m so scared to go alone. Can you come with me?”
This was a first. Shiffy wasn’t one of her regular waker-uppers; on the contrary, Yitty needed a waker-upper more often than not.
That’s strange, was the first fleeting thought that flitted through her exhausted brain.
The thought was quickly pushed away by her motherly instincts compelling her to rise, quite literally, to the occasion. It’s not so bad, though.
I’ll just walk her down the hallway and wait until she’s ready to go right back to bed. In five minutes flat, I’ll be tucked under my covers.
Yitty treaded softly to the door and opened it quietly, the stillness of the night punctuated only by the sounds of everyone’s breathing.
“Come, Shiffy. Mommy will take you.”
The sweet, compliant preschooler had other plans though.
“I don’t wanna go to the upstairs bathroom. I wanna go downstairs.”
Huh? Was she hearing right? The Sterns were lucky enough to live on two floors, with one bathroom on each level. Convenient as it was to have a bathroom on the ground floor, right off the kitchen, the children tended to avoid using it when possible, as it was in desperate need of renovation. And now, in the middle of the night, Shiffy, her finicky princess, wanted to go all the way downstairs to use the “ichy” bathroom?
Midway down the stairs, she stopped short. What was that noise?
Drip. Drip. Drop.
A leak? Where was it coming from?
She continued down the steps and flicked the light switch.
While Shiffy scampered to the bathroom, Yitty quickly surveyed the scene. Water was dripping steadily from the ceiling, right onto their wooden dining room table. The seforim were drenched. Her purse looked discolored. Last night’s artwork looked like some modern painting. Yitty ran to turn the water off, and went back to assess the damage.
She gasped. Right next to the waterlogged pencil case, was the velvet pouch holding Yossi’s brand new set of tefillin. And it was perfectly dry, inside and out.
Her husband, Chaim, had invested intense research when ordering tefillin for their bechor. Imported from Eretz Yisroel, these precious tashmishei kedusha were mehudar at the highest level. They had paid a steep price for the tefillin and a mere three weeks ago, Yossi had donned them for the first time.
And thanks to this perfectly orchestrated wakeup call, he would continue wearing this intact pair of tefillin each morning.
Making a mental note to call the landlord first thing in the morning, Yitty gently ushered Shiffy into bed. Before she could close the door, Shiffy was sound asleep.
Yitty tried convincing her otherwise, but Shiffy stood her ground. Though she was blearyeyed and creaky-boned, Yitty knew to pick her battles. She went back to her bedroom to put on her silk morning robe and glasses. Grasping her daughter’s little hand, the twosome made their way downstairs.
But Yitty couldn’t go to sleep just yet. Pulling out her journal, she scribbled quickly, jotting down the details of tonight’s miracles. Shiffy’s uncharacteristic midnight arousal. The odd request of using the downstairs bathroom. The precise timing of their midnight trip downstairs. She needed to remember this. It wasn’t a lifealtering catastrophe that had been averted entirely. The cleanup would be a hassle and it would take a good afternoon nap to replace the missing sleep. Yet, this incident reminded her how everything, even daily, or nightly annoyances are for our ultimate good.
And we’d be wise to hear the wakeup call instead of turning over to the other side..

QMy baby is 8 weeks old and I feel like I do not have enough milk. Are there any natural supplements or is there anything natural I can do to get me to produce more?
AJust because it’s natural doesn’t mean it always comes naturally. Many mothers find themselves worried, unsure, or even discouraged when they feel like they don't “have enough” milk.
The truth is, nourishing a baby is a beautiful gift—but not every woman’s body responds in the same way, and it’s important to remember that our avoda is not just in doing, but in being at peace with what we’re given. You are showing up for your baby in every possible way, and that counts for everything. That said, there are natural ways to support your body and gently encourage it to give more—safely, and with awareness of the amazing systems Hashem created within us. The ability to nourish your child starts deep inside the brain. Specifically, it’s your pituitary gland that’s in charge here—releasing a special hormone called prolactin. This hormone tells the body, “It’s time to make more.” What triggers prolactin to rise? Stimulation and regular emptying. The more often your body is “asked” for nourishment, the more it learns to respond. This is why the concept of “supply and demand” is at the heart of increasing production. If you reduce the number of sessions or your body doesn’t fully empty, your system may get the message that less is needed.
If you’re doing all you can but still feel like your body needs some support, here are natural options that may help increase your output— quietly and gently:
1. Hydration is key: Drink a lot. Your body needs water to function well, and even slight dehydration can affect output. Aim for at least 8–10 cups a day, more if you’re active or it’s hot out.
2. Eat well and fully: You are feeding both yourself and your little one. This is not the time to cut corners with meals or nutrients. Focus on a balanced diet: protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.
Don’t skip meals!
Some foods that are known to be helpful:
• Oats – especially whole or steel-cut
• Barley – can be made into soups or salads
• Fennel – fresh or as a tea
• Dark leafy greens – like spinach or kale
• Nuts and seeds – in moderation, particularly almonds and sesame seeds
• Garlic – known to support circulation and nourishment
3. Herbs & supplements to consider: Always check with your doctor, midwife, or herbalist first, but here are some commonly used options:
• Fenugreek – often used in capsule or tea form, known to stimulate the body’s production response.
• Blessed thistle – not the same as milk thistle; used in combination with fenugreek.
• Goat’s rue – especially for those who had a difficult start or delayed onset.
• Moringa (Malunggay) – a natural leaf powder often added to smoothies or capsules.
Many women find these most effective when paired with regular demand. One of the most powerful ways to help your body do more is simply to keep asking. Whether that’s through regular nursing, pumping, or both, the more your body senses “we need more,” the more likely it is to respond. Try to keep sessions consistent, avoid skipping, and aim to fully empty each time. It can help to relax and rest during these times—easier said than done, I know! But a calm, supported mother signals safety to her own body, and that matters too.
