A simple post from Makdim led us to discover my father had a mass in his colon.
They pulled out 8 polyps today, some large ones.
The doctor said it would have become cancerous within 8 to 12 months.
Surgery was successful, Baruch Hashem.
My husband, 49, was inspired by your organization to do a colonoscopy. The doctor said he would have had cancer.
Thank you for being the shliach.
Real people. Real messages. Real impact.
My aunt went for a routine mammogram and they found something. She was about to postpone it for knee surgery.
The work Makdim does is so important.
I’m 34. I had no symptoms. Makdim’s awareness campaign made me go for a check and that’s how they caught leukemia early.

"t's so funny, cuz it keeps happening lately!
I got started with the shots and the chevra at Kosher Skinny Shots were so nice about it. I was always afraid of needles and it wasn't easy for me to take the shots every week. I mean, they're practically painless, but you know we all have our phobias, right?
So when Kosher Skinny Shots told me about their new cream I was thrilled and switched over right away!
And now every time I smear it on, someone always asks me why I'm putting on suntan lotion at night..."
Kosher Skinny Shots does it again! See you next week...

LAST DAY: MOTZEI SHABBOS AUG. 30, ‘25
NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST. ESTHER RAPAPORT
RECAP OF CHAPTER 81: Rechel, surrounded by her family, is beside herself with worry over Binyamin’s fate. She tells her family that on her husband’s last day, she’d gone to visit him in the clinic, and he’d written in his notebook that Bernard had told him that there really weren’t any Nazis anymore.
Elimelech Kush, Mottel’s father, comes and tells them that Binyamin is in his house.
Josef howls in worry to his friend Hans Kafnika, who’s in on the secret and whose job is to make sure the Austrian authorities don’t find out about it. Hans calms Josef down and tells him no one is suspicious in the police force, and for his own good, he should continue to be nice to the Jews and not kill anyone. They just don’t have the manpower to deal with the Jews with terror.
CHAPTER EIGHTY TWO
Sign on the central bulletin board in the camp: Urgent notice!
All residents of the camp, aged thirteen and up, will gather today at the beginning of the lunch break in the factory yard, regarding a vitally important matter!
Leo Sherer
“I’m pleading with you!” Leo paused and coughed, his pallor rather yellowish. “I am pleading with you: No nonsense, please! We are in a very, very tense situation. The Wangel family is very displeased by the recent developments. What I am asking everyone is to continue their daily routine as normal, and to
work productively and efficiently.”
A whisper rippled through the crowd.
“Schvirtz tried to craft a communications device,” Sherer continued. “We have no idea what for. To contact the SS in Vienna so that our hiding place should be discovered? It is not clear to anyone; I just know that a member of the Wangel family heard part of the conversation, and they were very angry, and rightfully so. They demanded from me to turn in the one who spoke on the device. At that point, Schvirtz realized that he had been caught, and he went and turned himself in.”
“And what’s happening with him now?” people asked as they looked at one another. “Is he alive?”
“We hope so,” Leo said, as beads of sweat glistened on his forehead. Some people in the crowd exchanged glances.
“It’s easy to hope so!” someone whispered derisively, looking around. “Rumors say that David Elkovitz is the one who spoke to

he was able to make telephone contact with Jews in Vienna? Jews! Free ones! And it’s been like that for the last fifty years!”
“What could happen? There will be a bloodbath here, that’s what will happen!” Leo hissed furiously. “I’m not going to put anyone here in danger because of some hallucinations.”
“Because of truth that appears to you like hallucinations,” David said grimly. “Do you want to speak to Suzy herself? So she can tell you about what happened in the garden of the manor house a day before Asher Schvirtz was murdered in the clinic? Or about the parts that she heard from the phone call that Schvirtz’s sister had with a Jewish woman from Vienna?”
“I don’t want anything, David.” Leo’s voice was weak. “I just want quiet, life, and tranquility.”
“Is that what you wanted all these years? And you silenced all the suspicions because of that?”
“Which suspicions?” Leo rose angrily. “We had no suspicions!”
David fell silent. “I think I’ll go to the manor house, too,” he said suddenly. “If they are waiting for more confessions, as they told you last night, then it isn’t right for me to stay here.”
“You’re not going!” Leo grabbed his arm. “You will not do it to your family! And besides, it’s best to wait a little longer. I think if we keep things quiet, internally, and maintain the work routine, they won’t do anything, and this crisis will just pass. Now, I suggest that you go home for a bit. I have no idea what kind of mood the people will come back from lunch in, and I prefer that you not be in the area.”
David studied his father-in-law. Then he nodded. “Thank you,” he said quietly. “Even if I differ with you on the way this situation is being handled, I know that you do so much for us.”
“Ah, differ with me. You differ with me! Why, what would you have done to handle this situation?”
Leo’s eyes were hard with anger, but David wondered if between his words was also a desire to hear
some advice on how to cope with this new state of affairs.
“I would have told everyone about Binyamin’s phone calls. The Wangels are four people, Papa! We are dozens of adults! Don’t you think we could handle them?”
Leo shook his head firmly. “It’s too big of a risk, in the event you are mistaken. One minute of impulsiveness can bring an end to years of tranquility, David. And should I tell you something else?
Most of the people won’t believe you.”
“Look, Bentzy,” his father said. “I was very careful, and because I was so careful, I hardly managed to find anything out. I know the head clerk in the Austrian labor ministry; they like narrow-mindedness, clean work, and not too many questions.”
Dena served them juice and slices of cake that she had baked. It was undeniable: In the months that had passed, her baking had improved drastically.
“So what were you able to find out?”
“I spoke to the one who does our audits. I asked him about increasing the number of workers, and I asked what I have to do if I want to take employees from an external contractor, and what I do if I want to reduce my employee list and cut back on the numbers. I only hope he doesn’t think we’re in financial trouble… That could harm our good name.”
“Hashem will help,” Dena said automatically.
“Of course,” her father-in-law said as he stared at his plate of cake. “What is clear is that he was not able to understand what exactly I wanted. I sounded a bit confused, but that’s okay. I finally got to the question about the temporary workers, and I gave him a few examples of small, home-based factories, and among them, I stuck in Wangel’s name.”
“Nu?”
“Fortunately, he explained to me in detail the management procedures for each one of the companies I’d mentioned. Regarding Wangel, he said that when orders are heavy,
they employ workers who live in the villages near their “Aha,” Bentzy said. “Now we have to just make contact with one such villager and interrogate him about what goes on in the factory.”
“He ate what you sent him and asked me to tell you thank you and that he’s doing fine.” Elimelech Kush looked at the older man. They were both standing in the shul’s courtyard. “When night falls, he will probably move to a different hiding place.”
“We have no words,” Binyamin’s grandfather said, a tremor in his voice as he shook the other man’s hand.
“He knew where to try.”
“He is very tense,” Kush added suddenly. “And he keeps asking me about what’s happening outside, and if anyone is suffering because of him. I reassured him, and I hope we’ll be able to continue keeping him calm.”
“I hope so, too.” Nochum glanced nervously toward the building that towered over the fence. “The quiet is too tense, and I’m afraid it does not bode well. It reminds me of those days…better not to remember. As a Hungarian, I spent most of the time in a military labor camp, so I didn’t experience a lot of this. But the Poles among us, who were under that horrific regime for more than five and a half years, would tell us that often, the Nazis’ retribution came after a while, when things seemed to have calmed
He fell silent. A figure was walking toward them, growing larger as it neared. The young lieutenant was wearing his brown uniform, and his hand was lodged in his pocket, in a clear motion.
“Maybe we should separate,” Kush said hastily. “You have an exemption from work already. I do not.”
“But if you disappear suddenly, it will appear suspicious to him,” the other man said carefully. “It is for exactly this situation that you came here with a hammer to fix Rabbi Schwartzbrod’s shtender. Isn’t it better to use the excuse for this Nazi as well?”
“I wonder how much it will satisfy him,” Kush said. “And in any case, I have no further reason to stand and talk to you. I came, I fixed it, and I’m going back to the carpentry
“Okay. Good luck,” Binyamin’s grandfather said, and turned back to the shul. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Elimelech Kush heading down the shortcut to the carpentry shop, and he hoped for his sake that Lieutenant Bernard would not call him to come back.
No, Bernard did not call anyone. He was heading right here, to the shul, and his face was redder than usual; it looked suffused with blood. Had he come to get the rav to force Binyamin out of his hiding place? Nochum turned back, watching as the young man strode into the shul courtyard with huge strides.
“Good afternoon to you, Herr Bernard,” he said politely. “And welcome. We haven’t seen you in a very long time.” TO BE CONTINUED >

Bridging the Gap Between Parents and Teens.
Five Tips for Handling a Moody Teenager
Anybody who’s ever been a teenager and anyone who’s ever raised a teenager (all of us, that is) knows that teenagers can get moody. One minute, they’re cheerful and prattling on about school play and the next minute, they’re irate because someone ate the last bag of muddy buddies that they were saving to take to school. Worse is when it’s something you’ve said that has
sent them spiraling. Worse yet is when you have no idea what it is that you said that sent them off in tears. Your teen’s erratic mood swings can be exhausting and challenging to deal with.
Below are five practical tips to help you and your teen(s) navigate their sometimes stormy emotions and build a harmonious, if not necessarily, calm relationship.
SHIFRA FRIED
1. Understand the Makeup of Your Teenager’s Brain
It’s been scientifically proven that the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and reasoning, is still developing in teenagers. (It doesn’t get fully developed until their mid 20’s – joy!) This can lead to mood swings, impulsive behavior, and heightened sensitivity. Understanding that these changes are part of their biology can sometimes take the edge off your frustration.
Ella, one of my workshop participants, shared how validating it was to learn about the biology of a teenager’s brain. Understanding that it’s just the way Hashem created teenagers shifted Ella’s entire perspective toward her children. She was then able to approach her teens with more patience and empathy.
2.
Don’t Take It Personally
When your teenager snaps at you or retreats to their room, it’s easy to feel hurt. However, it’s important to remember that their moodiness usually isn’t about you. Teenagers are often dealing with internal struggles, from unwieldy hormones to social pressures to academic stress, and their reactions are often a reflection of those challenges. Miriam, one of my clients, related how every conversation with her teenager left her feeling attacked. It became debilitating—until she learned that teenagers often don’t have control over their volatile emotions. After their outbursts, they often feel terrible. Miriam realized this and was able to respond more calmly and lovingly.
3.
Connect with Them
Your teenager may act like he doesn’t want to talk to you. He may roll his eyes when you ask how his day was or run into his room as soon as he comes home, but deep down, he craves connection. Checking in often, even when they respond
with an irritated sigh or one word answer, shows them that you care.
Devorah recounted a story about her 12-year-old coming home from school, all bent out of shape and refusing to talk. Instead of pressing her son to tell her what happened, Devorah connected with him in another way, suggesting they work on his favorite puzzle together.
After a short while, her pre-teen opened up about what was bothering him.
But even if they don’t open up, your consistent effort to connect lays the foundation for trust and communication in the future.
4. Set Clear Boundaries
Maybe your teenager complains that you’re always telling her what to do and she hates it! Don’t be fooled – teens desperately need and want boundaries, especially when their emotions feel all over the place. Setting clear, consistent rules helps them understand what’s expected of them. Be firm but fair. When your teens know the rules and consequences, it reduces conflict and creates a sense of inner stability even during emotional ups and downs.
A 19-year-old client, Atara, once confided that even though she outwardly hated when her parents set limits, she actually secretly appreciated it. It made her feel protected and cared for that they didn’t just allow her to do anything she wanted.
5. Be Empathetic
Many times teens feel like no one understands them, especially their ancient parents.
Empathize with her feelings and challenges, even if they seem exaggerated or unpredictable. Try to remember how it was when you were her age, what a big deal everything was then. Remind him that you’re both on the same team. You want him to succeed!

QI lead a very high-powered position and a fast-paced life. My mother has always been telling me that stress leads to an inability to lose weight. This summer I will be working a lot less and I am wondering: if my stress level is down and my sleep level is up, will I really be able to lose weight faster? Is it a real thing that stress leads to weight gain—or makes it harder to lose weight?
AYes. Your mother is right—and science is on her side. When it comes to weight loss, most people think only of 'calories in' versus 'calories out', but the reality is far more complex. Stress, sleep, and hormones play a massive role in whether your body is ready to let go of weight—or whether it’s hanging onto it like it’s preparing for a famine. When you're under pressure—tight deadlines, constant decision-making, juggling meetings—your body produces cortisol, often called the "stress hormone." Cortisol is essential in short bursts (it helps you get through emergencies), but chronic stress leads to chronically elevated cortisol, and that’s where the trouble begins.
Here’s how stress and cortisol affect weight:
• Cortisol promotes fat storage, especially around the midsection.
• It increases cravings for high-fat, high-sugar foods—comfort foods your body thinks it needs to “survive.”
• It slows down metabolism, especially if you’re not sleeping well.
• It can disrupt blood sugar regulation, leading to more frequent hunger—even when you don’t need the calories.
• In other words, if you’ve been doing “everything right” and still not seeing results, high stress could be the missing piece of the puzzle.
Now let’s talk sleep. You might think sleep is just rest, but it’s actually when your body resets
your hormones, metabolism, and appetite controls.
When you don’t sleep enough:
• Your body produces more ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and less leptin (the fullness hormone)—which means more cravings and less satisfaction.
• Your insulin sensitivity decreases, making it harder for your body to handle carbohydrates.
• You’re more likely to overeat the next day— studies show even one night of poor sleep can lead to consuming hundreds more calories.
• If your workload lightens, your stress decreases, and your sleep improves— absolutely yes, your body will be more ready to release weight.
Think of it this way: dieting in a high-stress state is like trying to run a marathon with the brakes on. Once stress and sleep are optimized, your hormones align with your efforts, and weight loss becomes much more efficient.
It’s not just what you eat or how much you move. Your body needs to feel safe in order to let go of stored weight. Stress and poor sleep signal “danger” and put your body in storage mode.
This summer, take the opportunity to nourish more than just your meals. Nourish your mind, your rest, and your peace of mind—and you just might find your body following suit.

FREE CONCERT & MORE: YAD L’ACHIM’S TU B’AV TOGETHER TO FEATURE LIVESTREAMED CONCERT & DAY OF TEFILLAH FOR SHIDDUCHIM, THIS MOTZEI SHABBOS 8/9
& SUNDAY 8/10
Global tefillah event for shidduchim to feature 2 livestreamed events with concert & rabbonim leading global tefillah
By: Simcha Sherman
This year’s Tu B’Av Together events from Yad L’Achim promise to be the most exciting yet:
1. A free livestreamed Motzei Shabbos Nachamu concert featuring today’s top Jewish music stars: Shloime Daskal, Beri Weber, Levy Falkowitz, Itzik Dadya, and Yidi Bialostozky
2. A full day of tefillah and inspiration, with a livestream led by leading rabbonim
3. A powerful panel discussion with today’s top experts on dating and marriage
4. Free name submission for tefillah in Amuka—no strings attached
Let’s break it down.
Yad L’Achim, the organization known for rescuing Jewish women and children trapped in Arab villages, established Tu B’Av Together as a zechus for all singles in Klal Yisrael to merit finding their shidduch—including the rescued women themselves.
(32, 38, 70, 82, 121, 124, 127, 128)
(A free Artscroll interlinear Tehillim with these chapters is available for download at TuBav.org.)
This year, since Tu B’Av falls on Shabbos, the tefillah will take place Sunday, following Rav Chaim zt”l’s guidance. He added his heartfelt brachah: “All who participate in Tu B’Av Together will merit finding their shidduch.”
To raise awareness and bring Klal Yisrael together, Yad L’Achim has arranged two major livestreamed events—both completely free to join.
A Global Day of Tefillah
For years, talmidei chachamim associated with Yad L’Achim have davened in Amuka on Tu B’Av for all who submit names— always for free. Thousands have participated, and many have reported finding their shidduch shortly after.
After consulting with Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l, it was decided that not only will the talmidei chachamim daven for all who submit names, but Tu B’Av will become an international day of tefillah for shidduchim. Since then Klal Yisrael has recited 8 specific kapitlach of tehillim on Tu B’Av, Tu B’Av Together.

Zichron Shmuel Kashrus of Lakewood provides the Tzibur with a list of recommended Hechsherim that have an established and long standing positive track record. This information is based on a consensus of the vast majority of mainstream kashrus experts. The Hechsherim listed here are the ones that experts concur to be from the top tier of kashrus in America [some Hechsherim may have not been listed, as they have not yet been thoroughly researched (some simply due to being relatively new on the market)].
ZSK's recommendations are primarily on factory made products available in grocery stores. Anyone familiar with inyanei Kashrus knows that the Kashrus of a restaurant certified by the best of Hechsherim will not be as Mehudar as a product which is made within the controlled environment of a factory. With the understanding that the kashrus level of a food establishment (restaurant, take-out, stores, caterers etc...) is אגרד
from the kashrus level of a factory made product, when choosing to eat from such an establishment, one would most definitely want to, at the least, be starting off with a high level Hechsher, to end up with the best possible results.
To add your establishment or to advertise in the Directory, email the Upstate Kashrus Directory at upkashrusdirectory@gmail.com

AS TOLD TO ESTY STEINMETZ
JULY:
Rivky
It was a glorious day. The sun shone and the grass swayed in the breeze, beckoning us outdoors. We packed up sandwiches and cut-up fruit, and headed to a local park.
The kids ate hungrily, or perhaps they were simply in a rush to finish lunch and head to the playground.
SEPTEMBER:
Rivky
I waved heartily to Chaim, my no-so-little boy, as his bus pulled away, then turned away from the window, smile shriveling up.
Avrumi was still in bed. It had been such a drastic turnaround, a sudden tornado that took the world as I knew it, scattered it in ferocious winds, and returned it to me a broken, shattered shell.
After the crumbs were cleared, I suddenly held up a hand.
“We have dessert,” I announced. “In honor of Avrumi’s birthday!”
A surprised smile spread across Avrumi’s face as I dramatically opened a second cooler, rustled within the ice, and emerged with an ice-cream cake with a big 16 on top.
The kids cheered. As they happily licked ice cream off their spoons, my husband, Shaya, turned to Avrumi.
“Mazel tov. You should always be a source of nachas until 120.”
It was a heartfelt bracha, the standard one my husband said every year.
I looked at my tall bachur, shteiging away in yeshiva, and for some unknown reason, tears pricked my eyes as I murmured, “Amen.”
Two weeks later, Avrumi came home from yeshiva early. And he hasn’t gone back since.
There had been some subtle signs, noncommittal murmurings about what they were learning, staying home Shabbos afternoon instead of heading to shul with his chavrusa, a general sort of unhappiness that settled around him like a gray cloud that wouldn’t disappear.
But nothing to even signal what was coming.
Every night, I tried to dig through my memories. Was there something I should have realized, something I should have said or done? Would it have stopped the train before it was too late? The answers eluded me, along with the yearned-for sleep.
Shaya
Life seemed to stall, the days longer than I remembered. Every week brought new complex questions, more long discussions, more heartbreak. And then, it was erev Rosh Hashanah.
The question tormented me all day. To ask or not to ask?
Finally, as I took my machzor in my hands, I knew what I had to do.
I walked upstairs and hesitantly knocked on the closed door.
“Avrumi, I’m going to shul now.”
Silence. And then, “Don’t wait for me.”
I gripped the railing as I went down the stairs and avoided my wife’s gaze as I headed out the door, head bent, alone.
OCTOBER:
Rivky
Somehow, the weeks continued, life continued, although I felt frozen in time, in that minute that Avumi came back from yeshiva, a defiant glaze in his eyes that I could not reconcile with my Avrumi, and announced, “I’m never going back there. I’m done.”
We spoke to his Rosh Yeshiva, gained some insight. We heard about his struggles, his loneliness, the bachur who took him under his wings. And then used that power to clip his wings, to take our bright, wonderful boy, and transform him into a hurt, wounded animal that spent his days holed up in his room, impervious to the sunlight, or wandering the streets in search of something he couldn’t name.
The winter felt longer and darker than ever. But through the darkness, one thing was clear. We spoke to Rabbanim, professionals, experts in the field, and confirmed what we felt instinctively: We could keep Avrumi home, surrounded with love and warmth, no matter what.
I spoke to Shaindy, the sister closest to him in age, and explained that he was hurting and needed time, patience, and love.
She nodded silently, but the fear in her eyes screamed the words that she couldn’t say.
Would he ever be the same Avrumi we knew and loved again?
Chaim and Mindy were younger and not as afraid to ask.
many times with professionals to know exactly what to say. But I choked on the words. Instead, I hugged him again, and just repeated, “Daven, tzaddik. He needs your tefillos.”
DECEMBER:
Shaya
The menorah gleamed from its prominent spot by the window. But Avrumi’s menorah was glaringly missing and only intensified the ache in my heart. I poured the oil into the first cup, prepared the wicks.
“Kinderlech, we’re tzinding,” I called.
I recited the brachos and sat down to sing Mazo Tzur. Shaindy sat on the couch with her camera, Chaim sat down next to me, and Mindy perched on my lap. Rivky hovered near the door, eyes drinking in the warmth, the glow.
It was a cozy scene, but without Avrumi’s deep voice besides me, it didn’t feel complete.
I tried to sing extra loudly to make up for it and the kids joined in. It was festive, but my heart felt empty.
After the half hour was up, I grudgingly stepped away from the dancing flames. I liked to stay there till it went out, but we had a Chanuka party tonight.
Rivky stayed standing, eyes fixed on the little flickering flame.
“Coming, Rivky?” I asked softly, feeling like I was interrupting a conversation.
She nodded, but remained rooted in her spot.
The kids were laughing as they chased each other down the stairs. I fingered the car key in my pocket and looked at my watch. We had to go. Zeidy liked to start on time.
“Rivky?”
Chaim came home one day and asked, “Mommy, what’s OTD? Shloimy said that Avrumi has OTD. Is it dangerous?”
His eyes were wide open. I hugged him close.
“No, Chaim, it’s not dangerous,” I reassured him. “We just need to daven for him a lot, and Iy”H he’ll get better.”
“Is that why he does these funny things? And doesn’t cover his head, and doesn’t go to shul anymore, and dresses like a goy?” He wanted to know.
I knew the answers; we had rehearsed this so
She looked up, and there was such raw pain in her eyes that I looked away.
“Actually, maybe I’ll stay here tonight,” she said tentatively.
For a moment, I was caught off guard. “Everyone’s going to ask…” I started.
But then I stopped. “Ok. It’s a special night.”
And I stepped away, looking back over my shoulder at my wife’s figure in the shadows.
Rivky
I heard the car pull out of the driveway, and for a minute, I felt lost. What had I done? What would everyone say when they realized I stayed home and missed the Chanukah party? What was

HOURS:
I doing?
I belonged in the car with my husband and kids. I could still ask them to turn back.
But the flame … it flickered slightly, shrank, then rose up again, higher and higher. I couldn’t tear my eyes away.
And I knew that my place right now was with that little dancing, wavering flame.
Avrumi
I heard the tread of footsteps on the stairs, the roar of the car engine, and then it was quiet. Good. Now I could come out and get myself something to eat.
I bounded down the steps nimbly, soundlessly, like I did every night when I returned to a slumbering house.
The house smelled of fried potatoes and oil. I sniffed appreciatively. I couldn’t wait to bite into that crispy, oily golden disc.
As I passed the dining room, my eyes wandered, unbidden, to the spot where my father kept his menorah, where my menorah had been in years past.
I wanted to look away, but it was too late. There it was, that little flame.
The room was semi-dark, pale light filtering in from the hallway, but there was a shape next to the menorah.
Could it be? No, it couldn’t be. It was the night of the annual extended family Chanukah party, and my mother wouldn’t miss it for the world.
But there she was, huddled in a chair, eyes on the flame, mouth moving soundlessly.
From her spot, she couldn’t see me. She probably didn’t even know I was home.
But I couldn’t continue walking. My eyes wandered from the menorah to the bent figure next to it, whispering fervently, imploring, demanding, begging.
And then she turned slightly, and I noticed the glistening tears running unchecked down her face. The murmuring grew louder.
“Vzakeini legadel banim…” I heard her whisper, each word a cry of agony and hope.
I crouched down into a sitting position in the hallway, hidden by the bend, and closed my eyes. And for the first time in a very long while, I cried.
And there, in that hallway, I made a promise. I was going to change. Because I couldn’t let my
mother’s tefillos go unanswered.
JANUARY:
Shaya
I couldn’t explain it. Couldn’t believe it. But when Avrumi joined me Shabbos morning as I headed to shul, for the third time, I knew it was real. Something was happening. Something good.
Avrumi started wearing a cap and mumbling brachos before eating. He even joined the suedos sometimes, a quiet onlooker but there.
Hope fluttered, filling me up from the inside with its warm rays. For the first time in months, my smile wasn’t forced.
Rivky started sleeping through the night. We didn’t discuss it much, fearful to express in words what we sensed. But Hodu LaHashem, it seemed we could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
APRIL:
Shaya
Avrumi came with me to shul for every single tefillah every day of Yom Tov. I felt like singing as we walked together to shul, squinting in the sun after long months of darkness. Instead, we spoke nonchalantly about inconsequential things.
He still got plenty of stares, standing out in a sea of conformity, but it didn’t stop him.
He danced with the Torah by the last hakafah, holding it tight, eyes closed. I couldn’t keep my eyes away. When he finished, he stepped back to join the circle, face flushed. I put a hand on his shoulder, letting the joy from all around the room embrace us.
JULY:
Rivky
I wanted to buy Avrumi a birthday gift, something small to show him how proud we were of the long way he’d come.
I was still chewing over ideas one morning when Avrumi cleared his throat.
“Mommy, I wanted to tell you that I’m starting in a new yeshiva tomorrow. Not a typical yeshiva,” he hurried to add, “but I’ll think I’ll be happy there.”
My eyes filled. “Avrumi, you’ve come full circle,” I whispered.
I thought back to that day in the park just a year ago, and I knew that today was a glorious day.
