You should know, I nearly stopped taking the shots now before the summer.. You know, coming up to the Catskills... the shots every week... But this new cream they have? It's a real game changer. It's only because of the cream that I'm sticking with the plan.
Anyway, I better stop talking before my ice cream melts completely..."

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST. ESTHER RAPAPORT
CHAPTER EIGHTY
The last page in Babbe’s notepad: Dear Mamme,
Please don’t be angry at me, and you also, Zeide and Babbe. I will make every effort to come back alive, with siyata d’Shmaya, with simchah and shalom.
But even if chalilah I do not— I wanted only the best for you. Please be happy always, and I hope someone can try to learn as an aliyah for my neshamah.
Love, Binyamin
P.S. I don’t want to part with anger, and I don’t know if Naomi really did carry out her threat and went to Sherer, the way it looks. In any case, what happened now isn’t really connected to her; Wangel heard a conversation that was made at an inopportune time.
So tell her that I will try to forgive. And that she should also forgive me. And that she shouldn’t give up on any of her dreams.
Iszak Zuretzky scratched the edge of his nose just as voices were heard outside. He quickly stuffed the notepad back into the pocket of Sarah Liba Einhorn’s white coat, ran to his bed, leaped into it, and pulled the blanket up over his head.
Leo Sherer entered, flanked by his two sons-in-law. “So he really went?” He looked around. “Irwin, check under his bed.”
“He went,” David Elkovitz said. “I’m telling you he went there, Papa. You can tell the people who have gathered that they can go back to work.”
“But I want to ask them a few questions,” Leo said. “Maybe someone knows something other than what you are telling—”
Their eyes locked for a moment. “If you don’t believe me, I have nothing else to say,” David said. He spread his hands in resignation. “But I will say it again: Binyamin went to the manor house to turn himself in. So it is needless to keep those people there, all gathered in one place… It might be dangerous.”
“Dangerous?”
“Yes. In the event that, chalilah, Wangel will try to take revenge
RECAP OF CHAPTER 79: Binyamin writes a note to his grandmother. Then he turns himself in to the Wangels, who had been waiting tensely and angrily, and tells them that he’d been talking internally to someone in the camp office.

on them all, why make the job easier for him?”
“Why should he take revenge? I don’t even believe this whole insane story of yours, David. Do you really believe that the Nazis no longer control the world?”
“I don’t know for exactly how many years it is the case,” Elkovitz said cautiously, wondering to what extent his father-in-law was as innocent as he sounded. “But based on the people we have made phone contact with…it is decades. You can ask Suzy too.”
“Suzy? ! She’s also involved in …all this?” He grabbed his son-in-law by the shirt, his eyes flashing with fury—and terrible fear.
“I want to ask you something else, Papa. Did you, the older ones, really never suspect anything over the years? Did you really think that Wangel built this place only to save us?”
“Of course not for that.” Leo’s breaths were short and shallow. “It was toward the end of the war, when the Nazis thought they were going to lose.”
“Which indeed happened.”
“Not for sure. In any case, in the Wehrmacht, they began to prepare for defeat, and they appointed officers to be in charge of guerilla warfare, in case the Allies would capture all of Europe. They planned to establish bases in a few places, and Ludwig Heidrich and Klaus Wangel were the two who were sent to this region to prepare a military base. They needed prisoners to actually build the place, and in April 1945, they came to Matthausen, where they met me and my brother Max. Heidrich, Katarina’s father, knew our family, and most importantly our huge factory that we had on the outskirts of Budapest… I was about eighteen years old at the time.”
“Very young.”
“Yes, but I had spent almost my entire life with the furs and the production, so I had lots of knowhow and knowledge. During
the war itself, I was also busy a bit with it, together with Max, and I helped him produce furs for senior officials. Heidrich had apparently heard about it.”
“And then they brought you here on the train.”
“The train didn’t get all the way here, of course. We walked and climbed a large part of the way, including places where no human foot had ever stepped. We were a group of a few dozen Hungarian and Polish Jews.” He sat down on one of the unmade beds. “Anyway, after that, things turned around, and the Nazis took control over the world. But Wangel and Heidrich, who knew what a treasure they were sitting on, decided to continue hiding us here, and we would pay them with efficient work.
“In any case, there’s no time for memories of the past now, David. I still don’t think you are right, and even if these are not Schvirtz’s delusions, then it must be intentional deceit by someone on the outside. Maybe it’s someone on the receiving end of your attempts to communicate, and they wanted to get you to give away our hiding place. Is it any wonder that Wangel feels threatened? Do you know what will happen to them if we are discovered here?”
David didn’t continue the argument. “Can I disperse the people?” he asked instead.
Leo hesitated and then said, “Yes. Let Irwin or someone else tell everyone that they can go back to work. You are staying here, and we need to think about what we are doing.”
“Well, we should be praying, no?” David sat down on the bed as well.
“Yes, maybe you should do that. But what are you going to do now? Hide? Where, and until when? What will be if they try to threaten Suzy and the children?”
“You think I should hide?”
“If you decided to claim that Schvirtz spoke to someone at the office, and that someone is you,

they might take revenge on you too!”
“There is a certain risk,” Elkovitz concurred, “but if we present it as if I answered the call innocently, it won’t be so bad.”
“And if they don’t believe it, or still want to find someone to take their anger out on?”
David stood up. “I don’t think I’m going to actually hide. I honestly don’t think the risk is so major. But just to be safe, I’ll try not to wander around under their noses.” ***
“Babbe! You’re back…baruch Hashem! We were so worried!”
“Baruch Hashem, yes, we are back. What did you give the children to eat in the meantime? They are probably hungry. My friends are bustling around the kitchen, trying to finish preparing the meal.”
“They ate bread,” Rivku piped up. “The cooked food can wait till tomorrow. We’re finishing the day soon here anyway. But what’s going on? Is everything alright? Were we the only ones not ordered to come to the factory?”
“You and some of the people in the infirmary,” Babbe replied.
“And that’s it? Now everyone is coming back?” Naomi asked, her voice shaking. She tried to hold in the tears, not wanting to cry in front of the children, but her tears betrayed her, and she fled to the end of the empty hallway.
Babbe hurried after her.
“What did they want from you?” Naomi asked through sniffles.
“They actually didn’t tell us anything. We waited there for nearly an hour and a half, until we got the order to go back to work.”
Naomi cast a tearful glance left and right. Rivku was walking out of the classroom and into the yard, watching as people scurried about the camp’s pathways. “So what was the whole thing about?”
“One of the Wangels heard on
Jews in Vienna. You told us this story. But if it is true—and I’m among those who believe you—then why are you so frightened by the opposite rumors, about Nazis and the SS coming to the camp?”
Naomi averted her gaze. “Because in my mind, the truth is clear to me. But after living in this lie since I was born… it’s hard for me to break free all at once from everything I thought I knew, and to feel that truth. So what will be now, Babbe?”
“This was in one of the junk piles in the camp, and I decided to try to see if it works,” Binyamin said in a measured tone, as Josef Wangel, inside the room, approached the back window with a feral expression on his face. “I pressed the power button, and I guess it beeped in Sherer’s office, and someone answered me. He didn’t exactly understand what I wanted. That’s it.”
He took a deep breath and glanced at the big hole in the old device, and the wires peeking out of it. “I didn’t know if it recorded me or not, so now, when I realized that everyone was looking for me, I decided to destroy it, so they shouldn’t know what I said.”
“Why, what did you say on it?” The veins stood out on Josef Wangel’s forehead; he looked positively frightening. His hand went down to the right side of his belt in a slow motion.
Binyamin was silent for a moment. Then, “I cursed the Nazis in the world,” he said. “Not you personally, of course. We are all very grateful to you for everything.”
This addition did not particularly calm Wangel down, as he exchanged glances with his wife. But something about the hesitant way he was pulling out his gun made Binyamin wonder if he would be in a hurry to use it.
“Grateful, huh?” Katarina said with disgust. “Verfluchte
Binyamin had only heard about this phrase, but he’d never heard anyone actually utter it, and he was stunned. But he didn’t allow the shock to paralyze him. “I’m sorry,” he said politely, and leaped to the side. Wangel, standing on the other side of the window, didn’t do anything except stare at the boy for a long moment and then at the gun in his hand. A moment later, he didn’t need to deliberate anymore—because Binyamin turned, dashed behind the bushes, and continued running toward the front yard, in the direction from where he had come.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
QAs a teacher working in multiple schools, I’m excited to have a calmer summer to finally focus on myself. I really want to lose weight, but I’m afraid I’ll become too motivated and start too many things at once — only to burn out after two weeks and never make real progress. From your perspective, should I focus more on learning how to eat in a dietfriendly way, or on going to the gym daily? Or a little of both? What’s the most important factor to focus on first?
AWith the school bags packed away and the lesson plans on pause, the idea of focusing on your health and finally tackling those weight loss goals feels refreshing — but also a bit overwhelming. Think of weight loss like a diamond. The core of the diamond — 80% of its brilliance and value — comes from how you eat. Eating in a smart, precise, and consistent way is what creates that foundation. This means entering a committed, respectful calorie deficit each day — not starving, not bouncing between fads, but learning how to fuel your body in a way that supports fat loss while still keeping you satisfied and stable. Then there’s the sparkle. That’s where exercise comes in.
Exercise is the polish that makes the diamond shine. It enhances the process — it helps you feel stronger, more energized, more toned, and yes, it can help you lose a little faster. But here’s the bottom line: you cannot lose weight through exercise alone. If you try to outrun poor eating habits, you’ll burn out, feel frustrated, and stall quickly.
The best way to ensure this summer is different — that you finally follow through and see results — is to start with food.
For 4 weeks, commit to learning how to eat in a way that supports your weight
loss goals. This doesn’t mean cutting out everything you love or following a rigid, joyless plan. It means:
• Eating meals that leave you satisfied, not stuffed
• Learning portion control
• Understanding how to create a calorie deficit that feels doable — and sticking to it
• Being consistent, even on Shabbos. Get this part solid. Build the diamond.
Once your eating is on track and feels stable, start sprinkling in some movement — but only the kind you enjoy. That might be a light walk in the morning, a dance class with a friend, a beginner strength circuit at home, or a swim at the pool. Ease into it. Don’t aim to be at the gym 6 days a week if you haven’t worked out in months. That will make you burn out really fast. Remember, burnout happens when we expect too much of ourselves all at once. But transformation happens when we layer one sustainable habit over another, step by step.
Good luck on reaching your goals and coming back to school refreshed in September!

Turn left over rice into a vibrant, veggie-packed stir-fry featuring tender edamame and fresh greens.
Ingredients:
½ (12 oz.) bag frozen shelled edamame
1-2 tablespoons oil, for sauteing
1 medium onion, chopped
2–3 garlic cloves, crushed
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup shredded red cabbage
4-5 cups leftover white rice
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp white vinegar
1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
2 teaspoons sesame seeds
Salt, to taste
¼ tsp ground black pepper (adjust to taste)
2 scallions, sliced for garnish
Directions:
1. Add the frozen edamame plus 2 tablespoons water to a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on high for about 3 minutes. Let sit for 1 minute, then drain and set aside. The edamame should be softened, but still have a bite to it.
2. Heat oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and saute for 7 minutes until slightly golden.
3. Add the garlic, carrots, and red cabbage. Saute for 2-3 minutes until the veggies are tender-crisp. Add the thawed edamame, leftover rice, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, sesame seeds, salt, and pepper. Stir-fry on high heat until everything is well combined and heated through.
4. Garnish with scallions and serve hot.
CHICKPEA & EDAMAME SLAW WITH SESAME-LIME DRESSING
A crunchy, colorful slaw combining chickpeas and edamame, brightened with a zesty sesame-lime dressing.
For the Salad:
1 cup frozen shelled edamame
1 red pepper, thinly sliced
1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed, optional
1 8 oz. bag shredded purple cabbage
1 8 oz. bag shredded white/ green cabbage
1 cup shredded carrots
4 scallions, thinly sliced
Slivered or sliced almonds
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
For the Sesame-Lime Dressing:
6 tablespoons soy sauce
6 tablespoons rice vinegar
3 tablespoons lime juice
1½ teaspoons toasted sesame oil
3-4 teaspoons sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar)
1 tsp chili crisp or chili flakes (optional- adjust to taste)
Directions:
1. Add the frozen edamame plus 2 tablespoons water to a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on high for about 3 minutes. Let sit for 1 minute, then drain and set aside. The edamame should be softened, but still have a bite to it.
2. Toast the almonds in a single layer on a baking sheet, at 350° for about 5 minutes (watch closely so they shouldn't burn).
3. Assembly: In a large bowl, combine the thawed edamame, red pepper, chickpeas-optional, cabbage, carrots, scallions, almonds, and sesame seeds
4. Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together all the dressing ingredients. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss to combine.
5. Serve immediately, or refrigerate for 30 minutes for enhanced flavor.
6. Keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container (store without dressing)—great for meal prep!
TIP: Prefer a more saucy salad? Use only half the amount of cabbage or increase the dressing to match.

Kumzitz Around the campfire
Stories that make the song play in your head and morph into something greater than the sum of lyrics and melody; an impetus for introspection and growth.
ROUGH TRANSLATION:
I yearn for the sweetness of Shabbos, That reflects and unites with Your chosen people.
Draw down the delight of Your reverence
To those who seek Your will.
Sanctify them with the holiness of Shabbos,
United with Your Torah.
Open for them the pleasure and favor
To unlock the gates of Your will.
Guard and protect those who watch
And await Your holy Shabbos.
Like a deer longs for streams of water,
So their souls yearn to receive the sweetness of Shabbos,
United with Your holy name.
Save those who might stray
From separating from Shabbos,
So it not be withheld from them.
For six days receive holiness from Your holy Shabbos,
And purify their hearts in truth and faith to serve You.
May Your mercy be showered on Your holy people,
To quench the thirst of those longing for Your kindness
From the river that flows from Eden.
Crown Israel with splendor,
Those who glorify You through Shabbos,
To inherit the portion of Yakov, Your chosen one. Shabbos is the delight of souls,
The seventh, a delight of spirits,
A bliss for souls to be refined
In love and awe.
Holy Shabbos — my soul is sick with love for You.
Holy Shabbos — the souls of Israel
Find refuge under Your wings, They are nourished from the richness of Your house.
I yearn for the sweetness of Shabbos
That mirrors and unites with Your chosen ones.
The lyrics for this song were created by R’ Aharon Hagadol of Karlin. The melody is a traditional Karliner niggun that was passed down through the generations.
AS TOLD TO ESTY STEINMETZ
I was sipping my third coffee for the day when inspiration struck.
“Hey,” I excitedly called to my chavrusah, Avrumi, as I jostled down the aisle, elbowing boys and
shtenders to get the coffee to my place intact.
Avrumi raised one eyebrow.
“We’re going out after morning seder,” I announced dramatically.
“We’re going where?”
I raised my voice to be heard over the weary whir of the the air conditioner fighting a losing battle, and the hum of bachurim loudly arguing pshat.
“I said, we’re going out. We can all use a break, and we have two hours free today.”
“Where exactly do you want to go?”
I heaved an impatient sigh. “Anywhere! Ooh, I have the perfect thing. We’ll go to that beautiful lake and trail, you know, the one just outside of Yerushalayim, near Hadassah hospital.”
“The Jerusalem Springs Trails!” Avrumi’s eyes lit up. “Yeah, great idea.”
I nudged the two bachurim sitting in front of us.
“Hey, Shimon, Ari, we’re going to the Spring Trails after seder, you’re in?”
“Yes!” They pumped the air.
“Mechaye. Now that that’s settled, let’s learn,” Avrumi said cheerfully, opening the gemara with a flourish.
It was a geshmake learning seder, as if our little excursion had already invigorated us before it began.
We grabbed some water bottles and chips, and last minute Shimon hoisted his guitar on his shoulder.
“Nothing like a kumzitz outdoors,” he explained. We arrived just as the bus pulled up and enjoyed the short, panaromic ride. We stepped off into another world.
The water was a sparkling sapphire, glinting in the sunlight, rippling softly in the breeze. Tall green trees swayed in a canopy above, and mountains beckoned in the distance.
The place was quiet, deserted—just us and the chirping of birds.
“Wow,” Avrumi whistled. “Taam gan eden.” He dropped onto the ground next to the water, and we all followed suit, closing our eyes.
“Oy, Koh echsof,” we sang, arms around each other, mouths open imploringly in song, eyes squeezed tightly closed, bodies swaying to the breathtaking melody.
We lingered on the final notes, hesitant to let go, like these final moments when Shabbos is departing.
The world was bright, alive, sun blinding our eyes. The water lapped calmly, singing in its own rhythm the sweetness of Shabbos.
For a minute, no one spoke. The minute felt too sacred to interrupt with simple words.
And then we heard a crackle of twigs, and a man was before us. He was tall, clean-shaven, bareheaded, dressed in shorts and jeans. And he had tears in his eyes.
“That song,” he said wonderingly. “That was beautiful.”
We just looked at him, too stunned to answer.
“Could you sing this for my father? He’s very sick. I just stepped out of the hospital for some fresh air, it’s a few minutes away, and found you singing. It would mean so much to my father.”
We looked at each other. Shimon shrugged, carefully placing his guitar back into its pack and returning it to its perch on his shoulder. I looked at the chevrah. Ari was nodding earnestly. Avrumi’s eyes sparkled.
“Sure,” I said
The man nodded. “Thank you, boys. Thank you.”
We followed him down the path towards the hospital, the glorious outdoors ceding to the defeated walls of the hospital looming up ahead, a parallel universe. We stepped inside, and were immediately hit by the strong antiseptic smell, jarring after the sweet scent of dew and grass.
The man nodded to the people at the front desk. “They’re here to visit my father,” he said. The security people nodded and waved us through.
And then Shimon removed his guitar and softly tugged at the strings.
“Koh echsof noam Shabbos,” he hummed as he coaxed the music from the strings, fingers nimbly creating magic, the stirring, heartfelt melody echoing in the surrounding vastness.
The music was poignant and awe-inspiring, compelling us to sing along. I wasn’t normally one to sing along in a kumzitz, but this wasn’t just any kumzitz.
Before long, I found myself mouthing along as well, at first quietly, tentatively, and before long, belting out the words of the chorus loudly.
We followed him down long hallways, and he finally stopped at a door. He rapped lightly before pushing it open. I stood for a moment at the door before cautiously stepping in.
The man in the bed was elderly, his face lined, eyes closed. He was hooked up to various machines.
“Abba,” the man called gently.
His father opened his eyes and smiled tiredly.
“Dudu, you’re back? And who are these people?”
His eyes traveled to the kippahs on our heads, the white shirts, and the black pants. His gaze was indiscernible.
“They came to sing for you, Abba.” Dudu
explained.
Shimon removed his guitar reverently and struck up the first notes of the song again. And suddenly, the hospital faded away, and the magical aura of before pervaded the room.
We sang it once, and then again, time suspended.
And when the final notes died down and I opened my eyes, I was surprised to feel moisture in the corners of my eyes.
I was even more astounded to see tears in the eyes of the patient on the bed.
His eyes were still tightly closed, and copious tears coursed down his cheeks.
“Abba?” Dudu stroked his father’s hands, concern in his eyes.
His father opened his eyes and looked at us through a glassy haze of tears.
“This song brings me back to my childhood. I grew up in a frum home, and my father sang this song every Friday night. Ach, Shabbos.”
His voice trailed off weakly. He coughed, and Dudu rushed to adjust the cushion and help him sit up.
“What I wouldn’t do to have one more Shabbos like the ones from my childhood,” he continued weakly. We leaned in, straining to hear every word.
“To feel connected to my creator once again.”
His eyes were open, but faraway, seeing straight through us to a world that was.
“Boychicks. Teyere kinderlech,” he said softly, the words incongruent with the bare-headed, whitehaired man he had become. “Can you please sing the song again?”
We sang the song we had sung so many times before, the words taking on new meaning as our voices soared.
“Sanctify them with the holiness of Shabbos united with Your Torah. Open for them the pleasure and favor to unlock the gates of Your will… Save those who might stray from separating from Shabbos…and purify their hearts in truth and faith to serve You.”
I peered at the old man from time to time. The tears dripped down his shrunken cheeks as he mouthed along the words.
We finished the song, and I looked at my watch. It was time to go if we wanted to be back in time for our next seder.
“I’m sorry, but we need to get going,” I said apologetically.
Father and son thanked us warmly, and we walked down the hallways and outside, blinking in the sudden sunlight. We felt different somehow, like we had entered as innocent yeshiva bachurim and emerged older, wiser.
We started the trek back to the springs, back to where the bus would pick us up.
And suddenly, we heard panting and a voice behind us.
“Wait, wait a minute!”
We looked at each other, eyes reflecting the question marks in our minds. Did someone else want us to sing for them? We really didn’t have time; we had to head back to yeshiva.
But when the man rounded the bend, we recognized him. It was Dudu.
But he looked different somehow, face red, eyes shining with a wild fire.
“My father just passed away,” he gasped.
We stood stock still, the enormity of his words punching us in the gut.
“Baruch dayan haemes,” I whispered, unbidden moisture filling my eyes again.
The man nodded somberly.
“He was frum as a boy. And your singing - you brought him back to the Shabbos of his childhood. You brought him back to his pintele yid.” His voice broke.
“I’m not frum, but it means so much to me that my father merited to do teshuvah in his final moments. Thank you, boys.”
He turned and hurried away.
We looked after his retreating figure, minds whirling, emotions spinning.
The approaching bus beeped in the distance. But we couldn’t just board the bus and head back to our regular, uneventful routine.
Not just yet.
We were shocked, overwhelmed, new, unfamiliar emotions rising that we didn’t know how to define or push away.
We looked at each other, and as one, we knew what to do.
We all linked arms, looked up at the bright blue sky, and started singing yet again.
“Koh Echsof.”
