RECAP OF CHAPTER 78: Binyamin discovers that Leo Sherer is searching for him and plans to turn himself in to Sherer. He asks David Elkovitz to bring him some old walkie-talkie device that he can say he’d been using—no real telephone. Elkovitz goes home to get the broken device. On the way back to Binyamin, he meets his father-in-law, who is angry that David got involved in this whole “uprising.” David tells Leo that they’re going to make up a story to tell the Wangels, so no one should get hurt, but that Binyamin really did speak on the phone with free Jews in Vienna—it’s not hallucinations but the truth.

CHAPTER SEVENTY NINE

Binyamin cast one last glance at his father’s kever. The rest of the matzevios reflected the light of the reddish afternoon sun as he and David set out in the direction of the kennels. “It’s very quiet here,” Binyamin said, looking around nervously. “Where are all the children?”

“They must have also been called to the factory.”

“Why, does someone think that one of them had the conversation?”

“No, but maybe the one who did was next to them, and they know a few details.”

“I hope your father-in-law will let everyone go, to live out their lives in happiness and peace.”

They walked over to the large water barrel standing near the fox cages. Binyamin washed his hands, and Elkovitz looked at him. “You know,” he said, after a moment, “at the end of the day, it’s not my father-in-law who is our biggest problem.”

“Obviously.”

“And not that I’m saying that you can trust him, because if he’s convinced that you’re the one who will bring calamity on everyone, he will feel obligated to save them. But you see that he listened to what I told him, and he trusts you that indeed, you will do what you said you would.”

“Yes.”

They stopped next to an intersection of the paths. In the middle, just before the incline that led to the factory, stood Leo, surrounded by a few of his assistants, looking directly at them.

“Go with them, David,” Binyamin said quietly. “And thanks for the company, the assistance, and…everything.”

“You’re going from here straight to the manor house?”

“Almost. I’m just stopping at the clinic to see my grandmother. I need her to convey a few words—” He fell silent for a moment as something welled up in his throat.

“To my mother.”

“Who says that your grandmother is at the clinic? It’s safe to assume that she was also sent to the factory, along with everyone else.”

“In that case, I’ll leave them a note.”

They continued walking a few more steps in silence. “You know what I think?” David Elkovitz stopped, his eyes dark.

“Let’s say the Nazis believe you, and believe me. And being that I don’t want to open my mouth to the Satan, you know, let’s say they only lock us up in a room for the rest of our lives, without contact with anyone. What will be with the camp in the days that follow, Binyamin? Just a few people will be left who know the truth, and they certainly won’t dare stand up to do anything.”

Binyamin didn’t answer for a moment. Finally he said, “So you want the women to get up and finish what we tried to start?”

“Why not? In the merit of the nashim tzidkaniyos, Am Yisrael was redeemed, and in their merit they will be redeemed.” Elkovitz took one more step toward the small group that was glaring at them. None of the members of the group came close to the pair as they talked. He sighed. “But it’s true that my wife won’t be able to do anything. And your sister…”

Binyamin cut him off. “Don’t talk to me about her right now.” He turned to look at the manor house some distance away to the north of them. All they could see from here was the rooftop. He wondered if Aunt Chani was in the kitchen there now. “But I thought about this point already. What can I tell you, David? Hashem ya’azor. We’ll daven—that’s all we can do.”

Babbe and Dr. Katzburg were not in the clinic. There were only two patients lying there; one was an older man who was sleeping, and the other was Zuretzky’s son. The latter blinked rapidly when he saw Binyamin and said, “Is that you, Binyamin? They were looking for you!”

“Who and when?”

“After they came to say that Leo is calling everyone, and Irwin went and you went, he came back with two people from the office. You people are not letting us rest!”

“I know all that, Iszak, thank you. Tell me, was my grandmother here?”

“I don’t think so. Maybe she’s in the small kitchen, or at the factory with everyone. I don’t know if they gathered the old people and the children. They didn’t take me, because I have no energy.”

Binyamin didn’t react. He walked over to Babbe’s white coat hanging over the door and pulled her small pad out of the pocket. He flipped to the last page and quickly wrote a few sentences. When he was about to put the pad back into the pocket, he paused, and then added a few more words, his eyes narrowed.

“What are you writing there?” Zuretzky asked curiously.

“Tell my grandmother I wrote her something, okay? But try to make sure no one else hears.”

“And if they do?”

“It’s not terrible either,” Binyamin said. He walked toward the door.

“You’re not going to tell me why they called everyone to the factory? I heard people talking. They are very worried, all of them. Does Wangel want to kill us, like in the scary stories from the past? Or did other Nazis discover the secret that we’re hiding here in the camp?”

“I hope the worry is not necessary, Iszak,” Binyamin said quietly to the blinking eyes. “Leo Sherer is the one who called everyone, not Wangel.”

“Oh.” Zuretzky stretched. “So you’re going there, too? Good luck.”

“That’s a very important brachah.” Binyamin’s lips curved into a smile. “Thanks, Iszak.”

“There will need to be real deterrence,” Katarina said thoughtfully.

“Absolutely, and that’s why, when I discover who that person is who spoke on the device, I will kill him myself. But about the others…”

“And if you discover it was an outside call, Papa, and that he spoke to someone on the outside, and they discovered the truth?” Teresa interjected.

STICKY GRILLED BABY CHICKEN

This sticky and delicious chicken will be an on-repeat favorite. This chicken is absolutely amazing at room temperature and pairs beautifully with the corn salad.

Ingredients:

1-2 lbs baby chicken

1/4 cup maple syrup

1/8 cup general tso sauce or teriyaki sauce

1/8 cup BBQ sauce

3/4 tsp kosher salt

3/4 tsp garlic powder

3/4 tsp smoked paprika

1/2 tsp onion powder

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Let marinate for minimum 30 minutes.

2. Grill on high heat until done.

SKEWERED HOT DOGS

Hot dogs don’t only belong in buns. This skewered version is so fun to eat and full of flavor. It’s the perfect addition to your summer table.

Ingredients:

2 packs hot dogs, cut into quarters

1 red onion, cubed

2 zucchinis, cubed

1 large red pepper, cubed

1 Tbsp smoked paprika

2 tsp kosher salt

5 Tbsp BBQ sauce

2 Tbsp mustard

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well.

2. Layer each skewer evenly with hot dogs and veggies. Grill on outdoor grill until nice and colored.

CORN SALSA

This light and refreshing corn salsa pairs beautifully with many BBQ dishes.

Ingredients:

4 cooked corn, charred in the grill and cut off cob

1/2 red onion, finely diced

1 cup cherry tomatoes, diced

1 avocado, diced

Handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped

2 tsp kosher salt

2 tsp fresh lemon juice

2 tsp olive oil

Black pepper to taste

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Let sit for a couple of minutes before enjoying.

Did you know that if you start Masechta Pesachim this week with the Amud HaYomi, you can complete the entire masechta before the coming Pesach?! Yes, with a relatively small investment of time and effort every day, you can be koneh a masechta and know it well!

That is one of the unique facets of the Amud HaYomi. It affords a person the time to learn and complete masechtos in a way that he can actually retain a kinyan in the masechta.

Now that the Amud HaYomi is embarking on its fourth large masechta, it has become clear to lomdim that this way of learning, one amud per day, empowers them time to look up shailos, peruse a Tosafos which asks a perplexing question, and in general be able to not only learn the day’s amud but to even chazer the previous day’s.

The special, remarkable kuntress called Iyun HaAmud compiled by great talmidei chachomim has been extremely well received by the lomdim. The kuntress consolidates so much of the important “reyd” on the sugya in the Rishonim and Acharonim, adding so much to the geshmak. HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Sorotzkin has encouraged lomdim to undertake the new limud saying, “HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shmuel Shapiro, zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Be’er Yaakov, would often bemoan the fact that avreichim do not have a wide-ranging bekius in Shas. He would advise avreichim to take time during bein hasedarim or night seder to learn an amud yomi. My father, Rav Boruch Sorotzkin, zt”l, also had an amud yomi seder every afternoon.”

“Many Can Benefit from Learning an Amud a Day”

HaGaon HaRav Isamar Garbuz, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Orchos Torah, recalled that there had once been a kollel that put an emphasis on retaining what the avreichim learned in previous years. They devoted a certain amount each day to chazering the previous masechtos that they had learned. They decided to do an entire blatt daily. Initially, it worked but as time went on, many avreichim had difficulty keeping up. They went to consult with HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, zt”l, and Rav Shteinman told them that they should chazer only an amud each day, because at times a daf a day is too much. “I too,” Rav Garbuz proclaimed, “think that many will be able to benefit greatly from learning an amud each day. With perseverance they will finish and retain Shas.”

“Just Like a Person Cannot Live without Air, a Jew Cannot Live without Torah!”

That is exactly what Dirshu has seen in the year and a half since the Amud HaYomi machzor has begun. Lomdim have had great benefit, finding it easier to retain their learning when learning at such a pace.

As the Amud HaYomi completes Masechta Eruvin and embarks on Masechta Pesachim, lomdei Dirshu recall a siyum on Eruvin held by Dirshu twelve years ago at exactly this time of the year, the period of the Three Weeks, at the Binyanei Haumah Convention Center in

Yerushalayim when Klal Yisrael was at a similar crossroads. At that time, Gedolei Yisrael, led by the great senior Rosh Yeshiva, HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, zt”l, who was nearly one hundred years old and HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach, zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Maalos HaTorah, attended.

At that siyum, Rav Aharon Leib said, “Just like a person can’t live without air, so to a Jew cannot live spiritually without Torah. The world cannot exist without Torah. A Jew cannot exist without Torah. If a person chalila does not have an esrog on Sukkos, he can still be a Yid. If he doesn’t have Torah, however, the world DOES come to an end. Hashem makes air the easiest commodity to obtain because without it we would cease to live. Without Torah, a person would cease to live. So too, Hashem infused in the creation the ability for a person who cannot learn Torah or cannot learn a sufficient amount of Torah to connect with the Torah through supporting it. Thus, everyone can have a chelek, a part of Torah.”

“We Will Only be Redeemed in the Merit of Torah!”

Rav Shmuel Auerbach’s remarks at that siyum as they started Pesachim could have been said to us today. He pointed out that “we are now during the Three Weeks of mourning over the destruction of the Beis Hamikdosh. Now that the Beis Hamikdosh has been destroyed, what do we have left?”

He answered, “Now, we only have the Torah! Ein lanu shiur rak haTorah hazos. So, how can we display to Hashem our deep desire for the geulah? The only way we can do that is by showing Him how important the Torah that which He has left for us is to us. If we show Him how much we love Torah, He will in turn see fit to entrust us once again with the Beis Hamikdosh. Perhaps,” said the Rosh Yeshiva, “this is the depth of the meaning of our sages’ words when they said, ‘We will only be redeemed in the merit of the Torah.’” Immersion in Pesachim Will Lead to a Transformative Pesach!

The Amud HaYomi is scheduled to begin Masechta Pesachim this coming Monday, 25 Tammuz/July 21. The program will complete the entire Masechta Pesachim, all one-hundred-and-twenty-one dafim, before Pesach. Anyone who has ever had the zechus to learn a Masechta in its entirety before a Yom Tov, can attest to the fact that the entire Yom Tov is different after having been immersed in all aspects of that Yom Tov for the better part of the year preceding it. Learning the masechta before the Yom Tov truly transforms the Yom Tov into a different spiritual experience.

With the Amud HaYomi there are so many ways to learn. Lomdei Amud HaYomi can avail themselves of shiurim now being given in hundreds of different communities worldwide. There are also shiurim one can access on the phone and on various Torah platforms with some of the best, world renowned maggidei shiurim. Many, of course, find learning with a chavrusah and the give and take that it affords to be the optimum way to learn.

The main thing to understand is that if you have not started learning the Amud HaYomi until now, there is no better time to join.

ROUGH TRANSLATION:

In my heart will build a Mishkan/Tabernacle to glorify His honor

In this Mishkan I shall [also] place an altar to acknowledge His splendor

And [as for what fire I shall use] I will take to me the fire of the eternal light [which is] the fire of the Akeidah

And as [for what] sacrifice will I bring, I will offer my soul, my own unique and special soul

The words originate from a piyut in Sefer Chareidim (Perek 7, Shir Yedidos) which was written by R’ Elazar ben Moshe Azkari zt’l

” Based on these words, “Bilvavi” was composed by Rav Yitzchok Hutner zt’l and was sung in Chaim Berlin at Shalosh Seudos in Rav Hutner’s own niggun. In 1968, the words were put to the now well-known melody composed by his talmid, Rav Shmuel Brazil.

BASED ON A TRUE STORY AS TOLD TO CHAVA L. BEER

It was two o’clock. Most of the workday was behind her, but the last two hours stretched interminably ahead. I hope Motti is behaving at the babysitter, Faigy mused, at least somewhat better than he did last night. She flicked a stray sheitel hair out of her face and sat up straighter in her swivel chair. The latest emails involved lots of back and forth and detailed research. Her eyes blinked and she reached for another sugar-free candy.

Exhaustion had become her middle name. Motti, her delicious firstborn, was teething, and somehow only slept during the day. Admittedly, that gave her the luxury of doing laundry and cleaning without interruption but she ached for a nighttime stretch of slumber. Juggling the neverending tasks of wifehood, motherhood and her nearly full-time office job required dogged determination. Faigy was up to the task, though the dark rings under her eyes were testimony to the difficulties involved.

“Your order didn’t arrive yet?” Faigy responded to the irate customer on the line.

“No. And I needed it yesterday! What kind of service is this?”

“I feel terrible. We sent out your package about one hour after you ordered it. Perhaps it got delayed due to the holidays.”

“I don’t know. But I’m really annoyed. Is there any way you can hurry it up? Or reimburse me for the aggravation?”

“According to the system, your package should land at your doorstep this afternoon. Apologies for the delay.”

“Awright. And if it doesn’t, I’ll be back to give you a piece of my mind.”

Faigy put down the phone and sighed. She was glad it wasn’t her package that was delayed. But come on; this wasn’t medication, it was just some sportswear! Then again, she couldn’t really relate. No packages, aside for medication, came to her door.

“The internet is a dangerous net, true to its name, and can easily ensnare the innocent into its claws. We may only use it for absolutely necessary purposes.”

That was Mrs. Gross, her beloved 11th grade mechaneches and Hineni teacher, delivering yet another powerful lesson.

“But everyone uses it for everything.”

“It’s so convenient to check things up there.”

“It makes everyone so b’achdus cause it’s so easy to schmooze using online apps.”

“What does it mean a necessary purpose? Everyone can define that differently.”

“Girls shhhh…I’m so happy you’re all chiming in here and sharing your opinions. That means you’re actually listening to what I’m saying and thinking about the effects of applying the lessons to your personal lives.

Now, as to your questions - and I’m sure there are many more… The bottom line is that the Internet is a dangerous place. Period. There are many ways to protect yourself from its influence. You can stay 1 foot away, or 1 mile away. How safe do you want to be? How pure do you want to stay?”

In the classroom, Faigy thought ruefully, it had all seemed so clear.

But in the frenetic lifestyle that was her current reality, shades of grey began to emerge. In that tired, overworked state, sticking to her bulletproof protection standards was oh, so difficult.

And her rationalizations were quite valid.

First, was the money factor. Shopping online would save them a pretty penny. With her husband in kollel, their family relied mostly on her hard-earned paycheck to cover the monthly budget. Faigy’s paycheck stretched to cover the inflated costs of rent, food and bi-weekly trips to Monsey for Shabbos. Oh, with some change to spare. If only she could shop for brand-name, high-quality baby clothing and gadgets available online for a fraction of the price. The frequent

conversations buzzing around her at work and all over didn’t make the challenge any easier.

“Pom-Pom has an a-may-zing sale, did you see? Their stretchies are 50% off, including shipping. This week only!”

“Pom-Pom? Don’t they have a local store?”

“Yes, but this sale is for online customers only.”

Faigy would swallow hard and continue plugging away at her computer. For the time being, she’d wait for a better buy at the local stores and wash her laundry more often.

Secondly, and no less importantly, was the convenience factor. As a working mother, Faigy barely had time and energy to make supper and take care of the basic needs of her family. Strolling down the avenue, baby in tow, in search of the finest, best-priced garments to clothe her precious prince was a distant dream. Well, maybe if stores would be open at 11 pm when Moishele was crying anyway, she’d brave the trip in the hope of soothing him…while finding a bargain. When else was a good time to shop? Nine to four was worktime. Four to six was Moishele – rest - cook - clean time. Six to eight was supper - laundry - husband time. Eight until who-knows-when was laundry - clean - baby kvetch time. Should she skip supper? Neglect her baby? Run herself ragged? Shop on Sunday, her only day to relax, visit her mother and cook in advance? Shopping in the packed stores with an active baby was a recipe for discombobulation at best and a full-blown headache at worst.

Three-thirty. Half an hour to her workday. Faigy stretched. Motti was busting out of his stretchies. He needed the next size desperately. The solution was just a click away.

Was it really so wrong to make a quick online order for the season? She knew which site she needed, had strictly filtered computer access now and had zero interest or extra time to ponder over inappropriate pictures. In any case, this was baby wear. What could be wrong?

relaxed wife and mother. No exhausting trips to the store and heart wrenching budgetary considerations. No screaming baby and tzumi/ bottle-stuffing while seeking the attention of an overwhelmed saleslady. The momentum was growing, reaching a crescendo.

Yet a still, soft voice tugged at her heartstrings, compelling her to stop.

“Faigy, it’s not a matter of right and wrong. It’s a question of standards, of a lifestyle, of what kind of spiritual protection you want to give yourself and your family. It’s a small purchase and takes a moment. But is it really such a bargain if it brings you into a new world you promised to stay far away from?”

No one could sense the battle raging within her. The chit-chat in the office and the pleasant background music faded into oblivion.

And Faigy, the strong, principled Faigy emerged victoriously.

Yes. She wouldn’t be swayed by the lures of society. No. She wouldn’t click those few buttons and enjoy the temporary peace of mind the purchase would bring her.

Deep within the recesses of her heart, she knew; this was the right way to go. There, sitting in a cool, comfortable office chair, she had scaled a mountain.

A tiny tear trickled out of the corner of Faigy’s eye and she quickly wiped it with a tissue. The intensity of the moment was immense and so was its magic.

I might as well maximize on this auspicious time to daven. For something, for someone, for a yeshua, hatzlacha. I certainly have Hashem on my side now.

After giving the matter some thought, Faigy mentally whispered a fiery tefilla to the One Above, the One who treasures those who remain strong in the battle for Kedusha.

Faigy’s temple throbbed, her heart raced and her palms oozed with sweat. Look, it wasn’t ideal to shop online, but maybe this was an exception. Her boss generously allowed them to use the computer for personal reasons, assuming it wouldn’t affect their productivity at work. Placing her summer order for those adorable, trendy onesies would take literally one minute, maybe two. Moishele would be ready for his summer portrait. She would be a
