ESTHER RAPAPORT
NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 36: Elky is obsessed with earning more and more money, and her mother is concerned about it. In an effort to make Dena happy and feel appreciated, Bluma Hanter gives her a job at the factory and also suggests that they add a certain line, in small English letters, on the packaging of their products.
CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN
A letter that Binyamin wrote to his mother when he was seven years old:
To my dear Mamme!
I am lying in bed but I can’t fall asleep. I don’t like the end of the month, when there is no moon in the sky and everything is dark and you are also sleeping. Do you think that when Moshiach comes, the moon will be round all the time, or that we’ll be able to turn on as many lights as we want then, anyway?
Please tell me in the morning that you read this letter and that you are not laughing at someone who is afraid of the dark. Because the night is sometimes so long!
And also tell me what I can do so that I won’t be scared, because I already said Krias Shema and all the pesukim, and it’s just darker than ever.
From, Binyamin
The letter was kept in an upper cabinet in the house, with Naomi’s compositions and drawings by them both, along with a few other mementos of days past.
The door of the cabinet opened, and pages upon pages slid down in the darkness to the floor. He was again a little boy of seven, sad and hesitant, waiting for his mother to come and
maybe sing something for him. He sat on the cold floor, with all the papers scattered around him. Maybe that little piece of paper was Tatte’s hospital card? It certainly looked like a medical document.
The card advanced in his direction, as if an invisible hand was pushing it. But when Binyamin leaned over to read it, he heard Babbe’s voice behind him: “No!” And the paper disappeared. Binyamin turned around, but Babbe wasn’t there. Or maybe she was, but the darkness was covering her up?
The darkness was so thick. Binyamin tried to call to Babbe, but he couldn’t emit a sound “Mamme?” he tried instead, but this effort failed as well. He wanted to cry, but he couldn’t even emit a moan from his mouth. His hand waved wildly, trying to slice through the terrible darkness, and it hit something cold and hard. The railing of the bed in the infirmary.
Binyamin sat up at once and looked around. There were no papers, and Babbe wasn’t there either. She hadn’t yet come to check if he was asleep. It was dark, but not as terribly pitch-black as in his dream.
His nightmare must have confused him, because he felt like his senses were deceiving him. His natural sense was that he had been sleeping for a long time already, but the darkness from the window told him it was not yet daybreak.
Or was it? There was something strange about the darkness.
Binyamin rose, washed his hands, and took his clothes from the chair. The new patients were still deeply asleep, as was the

Elkovitz baby. Where was her father? Had he left in the middle of the night? The big, rectangular glass that covered the window was dark, but the color was a bit different than usual. Perhaps it was snowing out, and the light of the moon was reflecting off the snow?
But the moon should be small now! And besides, it wasn’t cold enough to be a snowy night.
Whatever the case, it seemed that he had time until davening would start. He’d go to shul and learn a bit while he waited.
Binyamin raised his eyes to the big wall clock—and froze in his place. Nine? It was nine o’clock a.m.? After a moment, he recovered. The battery must be dead. It was not possible that the clock was telling the real time. It was still nighttime outside!
But what kind of strange night was this? He suddenly realized that he was hearing loud talking from the path, and noticed that the door to the infirmary was open. Someone was approaching the door, speaking animatedly.
tune, one that they hadn’t heard in the camp for a long while. “Solar eclipse,” Elkovitz said, as he nervously hurried to his daughter’s bedside. “It came to our area about twenty minutes ago, and it’s going to reach a peak soon. I have no idea what the rules are here, in the clinic, when they play Schubert’s Ninth Symphony. Do the patients also have to go out and hide?”
“A solar eclipse!” Binyamin gaped at the window, his ears hardly registering the notes slicing through the air, rising and falling and sending all the residents dashing for their hiding places. “So that means the sun rose already? And I slept through it?”
“It rose.” Elkovitz gently lifted the baby. “About two hours ago, like every day. But your grandmother didn’t let anyone wake you up. I just came in now, because I figured you would feel bad if you didn’t get to see the eclipse.”
His nightmare must have confused him, because he felt like his senses were
“It’s amazing,” the man was saying to whoever he was speaking to, “but there’s something unnerving about it, too…” He turned and walked into the infirmary, suddenly noticing Binyamin. “Tonight of all nights you slept really well, huh?” He smiled.
Binyamin couldn’t find his voice. He looked at David Elkovitz, who appeared as if he had been awake for hours, and then turned to the clock.
“The battery is dead, right?” he wondered aloud, studying the second hand, which was ticking rhythmically. “So how does it…”
“Why dead?” Elkovitz looked up as well.
“It really is nine a.m.”
“Nine!” Binyamin looked at the window. “Nine in the mor—?”
His words were cut off by a familiar
“But I didn’t daven yet!” the boy groaned. “And I missed zman Krias Shema!”
“You should hurry before you miss the second zman too,” Elkovitz said, and headed for the door with the blanketwrapped bundle in his arms. Binyamin studied his bare head from behind.
Dr. Annie Katzburg bustled in. “Quickly, quickly,” she said. “The two new ones will stay here. We’ll close the door and the broken shutters, and it will look like an abandoned structure.”
Babbe peeked in from behind her. “Binyamin?”
“Hi, Babbe, I’m running to get tefillin.”
“I don’t know if there’s ti—” She stopped when she saw his eyes. “Run quickly and then go to the nearest shelter before they lock it. No games, Binyamin; they are very tense. They just received word that spectators have come to the area to watch the eclipse, and it can be dangerous for us.”
He dashed outside. In the distance, he

could see small figures scurrying every which way. The sky was very dark, and somewhere above the trees, he noticed a feeble light peeking from behind a big black blob. He didn’t even have a minute to stop and watch what it looked like when the sun is eclipsed after it rises. He burst into the shul and found it empty. There were a few pairs of tefillin in the cabinet; he took the one closest to him.
A scream outside the building suddenly made him freeze in place.
“I hope you’re the last one! If I find someone else here who hasn’t gone to the shelter, he will be severely punished!”
Binyamin stopped a second before his foot crossed the threshold of the shul. Were they talking about him? He peeked carefully outside. It was very dark; the eclipse must have been at its peak. Hauptmann Josef Wangel was standing about five meters from the door, dressed in civilian clothes. He looked very strange standing there and pointing angrily to David Elkovitz, who was facing him, cradling his baby.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Wangel,” David said in a low voice. “I didn’t know if it was better to stay in the infirmary or leave. So we just came out now.”
“No excuses now!” the Hauptmann yelled. “Just get to the shelter!”
Binyamin retreated slowly into the shul. He dropped to the floor and crawled under the bimah, hugging the tefillin bag in his right hand. He carefully straightened the cloth covering on the bimah, which reached the floor, and opened it a crack to be able to peek out between the cloth and the wooden leg. He was facing the doorway, and he could see the path leading to Shelter A. Who was that hurrying toward it? Babbe? She’d see that he hadn’t managed to get there.
Should he get up and run now? He didn’t think that the Hauptmann would really punish anyone who was late, but still, it was a risk. They were not searching each building. Would someone notice
that he wasn’t in any of the shelters? It was unlikely. In the factory they knew that he hadn’t been coming to work these past few days, so he wouldn’t be missed there. And the people in Shelter A? The regulars there wouldn’t notice his absence, of course, but what would Dr. Katzburg say? And Babbe? And Elkovitz?
And Mamme?
These were the people who knew he hadn’t gone to the factory this morning and that he was supposed to be hiding with them. But he could probably trust them all. With the hope that Mamme wouldn’t blurt out a panicked question like, “Where’s Binyamin?”
How many minutes had passed? Four? Five? He peeked out again from behind the velvet cloth. Wangel’s figure was retreating on the path that went up the hill, to the factory that was hidden between the trees. Excellent. Now he had to find a way to sneak into Shelter A without anyone noticing that he had come late. Did Hauptmann Katarina stay there the whole time they had to hide? From Mamme’s stories, it seemed that she sometimes did and sometimes did not.
He would take the risk and get closer to the place, try to check it out. Somehow, when a raging Josef Wangel wasn’t around, it seemed less scary. At worst, he’d be soundly rebuked.
He got up carefully, the holy bag in his arms, and emerged from under the bimah. With silent steps, he headed to the door of the shul and looked out. The camp was deserted, as if there really wasn’t a living being in the whole place. The sky spread out above him, dark, and Binyamin’s mouth opened as he saw the black blob over the forested hills slowly sliding aside. The halo of light that peeked out from behind the darkness grew, and as the black shadow moved off and weakened, the light grew stronger, until its rays once again shone full force.
The sun had risen, once again, over Samson Lager.
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU NURSE ON EACH SIDE?
The Truth Behind the Clock!
It’s a question I get all the time: “I do 10 minutes on each side, or 20 minutes, is that enough?” My answer is always the same: “How many swallows is your baby taking?” And usually, I get a look of confusion. Swallows?!
Let’s be real—has anyone ever timed you while you eat a tuna sandwich? Or kept a stopwatch while you enjoy a bowl of chicken soup? (That’d be weird, right?) Yet, somewhere along the line, watching the clock became a thing for nursing moms. But here’s the truth: the only way to know if your baby is eating enough isn’t by checking the time, it’s by watching your baby swallow! Yep, forget the clock—watch your baby instead. If your little one is three months and under, they need to swallow around 450 times during a feeding to fill their tiny tummies. Don’t panic, though—I’m not saying you need to count every single swallow. What’s important is learning to recognize a swallow. You don’t want your baby just sitting there, using you as a human pacifier while you nervously glance at the clock.
So, next time you’re feeding, focus on your baby’s neck and bottom jaw. Learn to spot the rhythm of their swallows, and you’ll know they’re getting what they need. Trust your observations of your baby, not a timer!

S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS
Q: My five-year-old daughter started kindergarten this year and I have been getting a lot of calls from her teacher about issues in the classroom. Her teacher keeps telling me that my daughter does not speak to her or other children in the class. She mentioned that I should have my daughter checked for autism.
I’m actually shocked by this news! At home and with my family my daughter is outgoing, communicative and just a pleasure to be around. From what I know about autism, she doesn’t seem to fit that description at all. But, then again, I don’t see her in school. Is it possible that my daughter is autistic even if she doesn’t seem that way at home?
A: It’s difficult for me to make a statement about your daughter anchored in description alone, but based on the way you have portrayed her – I would venture to say that autism is not the problem at all. While autism is often associated with a lack of communication, children with autism display other behaviors such as hand flapping, repetitive behavior, and social isolation.
So, what might be making your daughter so quiet in the classroom? It is possible that your daughter suffers from selective mutism. The New York Times explains that children and adults with this disorder are fully capable of speech and understanding language, but can fail
Rifka Schonfeld, Director
to speak in certain situations when it is expected of them.
The American Speech-LanguageHearing Association details the specific symptoms of selective mutism:
• This inability to speak interferes with educational or occupational achievement.
• The length of the inability to speak last more than one month (excluding the first month of school).
• The failure to speak does not stem from a lack of knowledge or comfort with the language required for the situation.
• Selective mutism usually occurs before a child is five-years-old and is usually first noticed when a child starts school.
It makes sense that your daughter’s teachers would not have picked up on this in preschool because children are not often forced to speak in the learning process. In addition, children in preschool who do not speak are considered shy, whereas in kindergarten, teachers begin to get wary and believe it might be something more than shyness.
The good news is that when diagnosed and addressed early, selective mutism can be treated and defeated. Often selective mutism stems from anxiety that children feel when placed in social situations. This anxiety builds each instance that
the child remains silent – creating a cycle of fear that prevents speech even when the child wishes to speak. Forcing a child to speak will only aggravate the problem. Therefore, the first step in treating selective mutism is reducing the anxiety associated with speech. Depending on the child, one or more techniques might be utilized:
• Stimulus Fading: This technique involves bringing the children into a relaxed situation with someone they talk to comfortably. With time, another person should gradually be introduced into the room in a number of small steps. Often, it can take a long time for the first person to be “faded-in,” but eventually, the child will lose some of their anxiety when it comes to new people.
• Shaping: Instead of encouraging the child to speak right away, this structured approach allows the child to communicate non-verbally through gestures, facial expressions, and mouthing. Once this is achieved, the child is slowly encouraged to make sounds and eventually words.
Using these techniques in a controlled and comfortable setting will help your daughter gain the confidence and assurance that she too can speak outside of the home. Before you know it, her teachers will be calling to tell you she’s being disruptive in class and needs to quiet down!
POWER TO BE
By: Chaya Blustein
Recap: The rav tells Mrs. Gordon that she is allowed to back out of her commitment to the agency, based on the situation. Mrs. Gordon is torn with indecision. Her husband offers to finally tell her what he thinks she should do, which is to keep her principal job. She points out that it will still leave her conflicted between two priorities, and he says that perhaps that’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be right now.
The next morning, Mrs. Kleinberg calls Mrs. Gordon to ask her that Bnos Golda students say Tehillim for Mr. Kleinberg. Bruchi and Perry Kleinberg show up in the office, and they discuss how to feel confident that the outcome of the hearing will be what they wish for. ..
CHAPTER 48
Mrs. Kleinberg wasn’t the type to think philosophical thoughts about the fact that driving up to the courthouse and finding a seat in the courtroom no longer felt as surreal as it had the first time she’d done it.
She wouldn’t ponder how human beings can get used to anything, and how the very same experience had gone down at least ten levels of torturous. Because it was still torturous.
She met Harry, her husband’s lawyer, outside the courtroom. He looked fresh and excited.
“Mrs. Kleinberg, relax!” he said to her when he saw her tense stiffness. “We’re going to have bail. I feel it.”
“Look, I’m not the only one who thinks so,” Harry said. “Pretty much every lawyer who’s been following the case feels the same way.”
Mrs. Kleinberg nodded.
To her, this wasn’t “the case.” It was her life. Assurances
meant little to her. All she cared about was the outcome.
***
Mr. Kleinberg hadn’t slept all night. He was waiting for the jail guards to come bring him to the courtroom.
Even with a watch, time seemed to stand still in the tiny jail cell he’d inhabited over the last two weeks. It seemed that instead of getting closer, the scheduled time for his bail hearing was getting further and further away with every tick of the clock.
So when he finally heard the telltale sound of footsteps, he nearly thought he was hallucinating.
But no, it was a jail guard, and he was rushing Mr. Kleinberg to get dressed in civilian clothes before entering the courtroom.
It was incredibly humbling to be ordered around in a rush, as the guards impatiently waited for him to be ready to be led to the courtroom.
The indignity stung.
Would he be sentenced to endless continued indignity, or would he get a temporary second chance today?
***
What Mrs. Kleinberg hadn’t expected was for Mr. Seidman to be so desperate to find out what her decision was that he actually made his way down to her office, instead of calling her to come up to his.
“Mrs. Gordon?”
The voice was unmistakable.
Mrs. Gordon looked apologetically at Bruchi and Perry, still sitting in her office.
“Just a moment, girls,” she said, as she got up to answer the door.
She opened the door and stood in the opening, closing the door partially behind her. Mr. Seidman looked past her into the room.
יפוצ
“You have visitors today?” he asked.
Mrs. Gordon looked uncomfortable. She had no idea what Mr. Seidman’s reaction would be if she told him who was actually sitting in her office now.
“Yes,” she said.
“Who has the honor of visiting the principal today, if I may ask?”
Even if she was going to leave this job, which was no longer definite, Mr. Seidman was still her boss right now. So Mrs. Gordon answered.
“The Kleinbergs – you know that Mr. Kleinberg’s hearing is today? His daughters are spending the morning in my office, instead of in class or in court.”
What seemed like disapproval passed briefly over Mr. Seidman’s face, but it was quickly cleared away and replaced by nodding agreement.
“Good, good. Always good to be there for your students,” Mr. Seidman said.
He looked around the hallway where they stood.
“I’m not sure this is such a good place for our meeting, though,” he said.
“Yes. Does it work for you if I come up to your office once these two girls go home?”
“That’s okay,” Mr. Seidman said, though it was clear that he was reluctant to say yes. “I’ll be waiting.”
Mrs. Gordon watched him walk away, her heart sinking.
She hoped she would have the courage to say the words she needed to say at that meeting.
Swallowing, she turned back to her office, where Perry and Bruchi were in quiet discussion.
“I’m sorry, girls,” she said, once again pushing her own concerns firmly out of her mind.
She circled back to the other side of her desk.
“Do you think I can call my mother already, Mrs. Gordon?” Perry asked, checking the clock. “Bruchi was just saying that it’s likely there’s a break already.”
Before Mrs. Gordon could answer,
the phone Perry held began vibrating.
Perry looked down at its screen and smiled in surprise.
“It’s my mother,” she said. “Go ahead, pick up,” Mrs. Gordon said.
Perry did, while the atmosphere in the office turned tense.
“Hi Mommy, what’s going on?”
She was quiet for a few minutes, listening to what her mother had to say. ***
“No reason to prolong the agony,” Josh Lugoff said. “Let everyone forget about it.”
Which meant that he was officially giving his permission to let all his scapegoats go. If the whole Finance2 scandal died, no one would have a reason to wonder where Josh Lugoff had disappeared to. So it was time for Kleinberg and Tim Brett to be forgotten about too.
That was the reasoning behind Josh Lugoff’s instructions to his secret puppet men.
Not that anyone was calling him Josh Lugoff anymore. Josh Lugoff was officially dead to the world, to the authorities, and even to his secret puppet men.
They had diligently worked to erase Josh from as much digital and physical memory as possible, minimizing talk about him and about his past.
Soon, he’d reappear as a new figure on the political scene. For now, he was working through his old connections, pulling the strings. Or rather, thinking that he was. What he couldn’t see was all the heartfelt tefillos and kabbalos from the Kleinberg family and the people who knew them.
The kind of tefillos that had the ability to truly affect reality –including what Josh Lugoff thought was a good idea to do next.
With all of Josh’s assurance that he was controlling things, he completely didn’t realize that he was being controlled all along. Whether it was to his benefit or
it wasn’t, Josh Lugoff was saying what he needed to say, so that what was destined to happen would happen.
***
“We’ll know for sure soon,” Perry said as she hung up the phone with her mother. “But it looks like there’s going to be bail. The prosecution hardly argued against it, my mother said. So there’s really no reason for the judge to say no.”
“How long are we going to have to wait on shpilkes for?” Bruchi complained.
“I don’t know. Till the judge decides, I guess.”
“Really, it’s crazy that we care so much about bail. You chap that Tatty could land back in prison in a few months after his trial, anyway?”
“Right, but Mommy was saying that if he’s out on bail, it gives Tatty a much better chance of being able to win the trial altogether. Because then he can prepare for it much better. And anyway, imagine if he wins the trial and then it turns out that he was in jail for nothing!”
Bruchi nodded.
“So it’s not just silly me hoping that as soon as Tatty comes home, everything’s going to be fine…”
“Hello, everything is totally not going to be fine when Tatty comes home! He’s still going to have to have a trial, and it sounds like it’s going to be pretty scary.”
“Yeah, but Tatty will take care of it,” Bruchi murmured softly.
Perry had a kind of disbelieving look on her face, like, “do you still really believe in that?”
Bruchi looked up, sheepish. “Okay, so I know that obviously Tatty can’t do anything here. But I still think I’ll feel so much safer when Tatty’s out of jail. Doesn’t that make sense?”
She addressed her question both to her sister and to Mrs. Gordon.
Perry looked questioningly at Mrs. Gordon, waiting for her to answer.
“Yes, it’s perfectly normal,” Mrs. Gordon said. “It’s a normal thing to rely on your father and to think that he can take care of everything.”
She hesitated, wondering if her

next words would be accepted. She looked at the two girls’ faces, and decided to risk it.
“Though of course, as we get older and more mature, we realize that we can’t really rely on our parents. That’s when it’s time to rely on Hashem.”
Was she preaching too much? If it was only Perry, she wouldn’t have worried so much. But with Bruchi there, she couldn’t know when the skeptical look would creep into her eyes and make it clear that Bruchi didn’t accept what she was saying.
“Wait, Mommy’s calling again,” Perry said as the phone vibrated again, and she took the call.
“My mother says that the hearing is over and that we’ll know the answer by the end of today,” Perry said as she hung up.
She turned to Bruchi. “Mommy’s going to wait in the lawyer’s office because it’s close to the courtroom, and she said we can come join her there. Do you want to go?”
Bruchi nodded emphatically. She wished she could be closer to the action.
“Okay, so we can head over there right now, Mommy said to call a car.”
With that, the two girls got up to leave, collecting the things they’d brought into Mrs. Gordon’s office. Mrs. Gordon felt a pang, watching them go. Now she would be just a
spectator to the drama, instead of a vital participant.
After Bruchi left, Perry turned to Mrs. Gordon, blushing.
“Um, Mrs. Gordon, I just wanted to say – thank you. Everything you ever told me really helped me the whole time, and I feel so different because of it.”
She sneaked a peek out the door to where Bruchi was waiting.
“And I know for Bruchi it was also so different because of what you spoke about with her. It really changed things for her.”
She made as if to go, then turned back for one last word.
“Also, I know there was a whole story in the beginning of the year about Bruchi’s clip – I really thought you’re not going to want to have anything to do with my family after that. And instead, you just helped us more than anyone else – I think just from that I learned more than anything else.”
With that, Perry disappeared, leaving Mrs. Gordon completely stupefied. She couldn’t even manage to form a reply to Perry before Perry vanished.
That had been so completely unexpected, coming from shy Perry. Who had ever thought the girl could be so eloquent?
Her mind scrolled through flashes of the interactions she’d had with

the Kleinberg girls since they’d been pint-sized first graders. Pictures of Mrs. Kleinberg, heavily made-up and ostentatiously dressed, flitted through as well. Memories of Mr. Kleinberg, and the mortification she’d felt at his hands.
There, her brain stopped.
Perhaps, before the judge delivered his decision, there was something else Mrs. Gordon could do aside from strengthen the Kleinberg daughters.
Maybe it was time for her to grant Mr. Kleinberg a complete forgiveness.
She swallowed, remembering the utter degradation he’d put her through. She’d been certain she could no longer be a principal, after the way he’d put her down.
And she had very nearly given up her job because of that.
The job that made girls like Perry say what she said. “It really changed things for her.”
But if she held a grudge, that meant continuing to think that Mr. Kleinberg held power over her. And how laughable was that when he was stuck in a jail cell for nearly two weeks already?
Quietly, Mrs. Gordon murmured her forgiveness.

SHOT HEALTH of a
KOSHERSKINNYSHOT TM
AN INSIDE LOOK ABOUT HOW THEY'RE TRANSFORMING HEALTH AND WEIGHT LOSS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY.
You’ve seen the ads. You’ve heard the stories. “It’s amazing. You take the shots and the weight just comes right o …”
“I lost 50 pounds in no time and I feel incredible!”
“It’s like magic. I don’t feel hungry. I don’t have any cravings and I’m losing so much weight!”
Known as “the shots” or “weight loss shots”, it’s been called a revolution in the weight loss industry, praised for its benefits and presented as a gentler, non-invasive alternative to weight loss surgery.
Maybe you’re wondering how it works.
Maybe, despite being jaded and frustrated by years of dieting and failed attempts at losing weight and keeping it o , you’ve allowed yourself to hope that this could be something di erent.
Curious about the shots and determined to get all the facts straight, we sat down for a firsthand, in-depth conversation with Mr. Shmiel Weiss of Kosher Skinny Shots to find out everything there is to know about the shots.
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started in the weight loss industry?
I’ve worked in the health & wellness industry for over 25 years. I started my career helping people find the right supplements and vitamins for their specific needs. Over time it evolved into nutritional consulting and coaching, specifically helping people lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Back in the day, before the shots existed, I worked mostly with people who were on high-protein low-carb diets such as Keto and the Meisels diet. A high protein diet is usually very e ective in helping people lose weight but I also saw how hard it was to stay on the diet and keep the weight o . As we’re all well aware, most diets are simply not sustainable in the long run.
Over time, I also got more involved in helping people who were exploring more medical weight loss options. It was then that I met my partner and together we learned about the shots. We studied how it works and the di erent options available.
I knew firsthand how much people struggle to lose weight. They try all kinds of diets but no matter how hard they work, the cravings and often hunger from suddenly eating much less, will usually get them in the end.
When I understood how the shots worked and saw how easy it is for a person to lose weight and change their lifestyle, I told my partner that this was it. We were going to focus on helping people lose weight and change their lives using the shots.
It sounds like a dream. You take the shots, you continue eating whatever you want day and night and you will still lose weight.
It may sound like a dream, but that’s not quite how it works.
First of all, people need to realize that it is a medication. Although it's a medication with a low classification, meaning it has very little side e ects and works almost naturally with the body, it is still medicine. You must consult with a qualified doctor who knows your medical history before taking the shots. Not everyone can take the medications that these shots contain.
This is why at Kosher Skinny Shots, in addition to our team of dedicated nutritionists and health coaches who are there to help you along the way, we work with one of the top doctors in the field, Dr. Joseph Oppenheimer, MD, who guides and supervises all the treatments.
That makes sense, it’s always important to be responsible and see a doctor before taking any kind of medication.
This brings us back to the big question: How does it work? How do the shots help you lose weight?
Let me explain. These shots use peptides that safely work together with the natural hormones and processes in the body to get a specific result.
The natural peptides we have in our bodies do several things. Some act as hormones that tell our cells what to do. Others help with digestion or the immune system.
The medications used in the shots use peptides to mimic or influence these natural peptides. SInce they’re so small and specific, they can do what they’re meant to do without causing any negative side e ects.
In our case, these shots, which were originally created
It’s a tool to help you lose weight, keep the weight o and help you live a healthier life. It’s a means to an end. Not something to become dependent on for the rest of your life.
to treat Type 2 diabetes, help regulate a person’s blood sugar, avoiding a sharp rise in blood sugar that can often happen after eating which usually leads to cravings when the blood sugar drops again. They also help slow your digestion and interact with your brain to reduce your appetite and make you feel full sooner.
Fascinating. I have a lot more questions, but you mentioned that these shots were originally created to treat Type 2 diabetes. Can you tell us what you meant by that and share with us a little about the history of these medications?
It all started way back at the end of the 1900’s when a series of exciting discoveries eventually led to the creation of Ozempic, the first drug of its kind, back in 2017. You must have heard of Ozempic, right?
Of course! That’s the shot that started this whole thing, no?
Yes. It was created by a company Novo Nordisk in Denmark, who like I said before, originally intended
to do anything. They don’t want to watch what they eat, or do anything. They just want to take the shots, continue doing whatever they want and let it take care of all their problems.
These are the people who will usually struggle more with the program because they are indirectly fighting against the medication. For example ,they will see that they don’t feel hungry anymore, but instead of stopping to eat they will tell themselves that they ate so little and continue eating emotionally. This will cause them to feel sick and keep them from losing weight.
Earlier you mentioned side e ects, and now you said that they will feel sick. Are there any negative side e ects that can result from taking the shots?
As I mentioned before, the medication used in the shots are extremely safe and gentle on the body. But yes, some people can experience constipation as a side e ect, because the shots slow down your digestion. Most people don't have this issue, but if they do, it can be easily treated using safe and natural supplements that relieve constipation.
Also, if a person overeats or eats too much of certain foods, they will feel very uncomfortable and su er from nausea or indigestion.
What do you mean if they overeat or eat certain foods they can feel sick?
The shots slow your digestion down so if you eat too much or you eat certain types of food you can feel sick.
The first kind of foods to avoid are very oily, fried and heavily processed foods. The second is food high in sugar; desserts, cakes, cookies, ice cream, candies, soda and even fruit.
It’s not that you can never eat it. You can enjoy some cholent, a piece of overnight kugel or a slice of cake. Just be conscious of how much you eat because if you eat too much of it you’ll feel sick.
So
these shots are
really a tool to help you change your eating habits and live a healthier lifestyle.
Exactly. These shots are meant to be taken for a limited amount of time. A person should take the shots and use the medication to help him change his life.
It’s a tool to help him lose weight, keep the weight o and help him along to live a healthier life. It’s a means to an end. Not something to become dependent on for the rest of your life.
Can you explain to me what will happen once I decide that I want to take the shots?
First, you will be examined by a doctor, to make sure it’s safe for you to take this medication.
Then you’ll start taking the shots once a week. It's called an insulin shot and it uses the thinnest needle that’s on the market. A person takes it himself. It’s very easy to use and even people who are normally afraid of needles don’t usually have a problem because you really don’t feel it and it doesn’t bleed. The shot delivers a tiny dose of the medication.
What’s interesting is that the medication doesn’t start working right away. You don’t suddenly start feeling di erent. It can take 2-3 days before a person realizes that they are feeling less hungry or that they can’t eat as much as they used to. It's extremely gentle and you start feeling the e ects slowly but surely. There are no drastic changes.
I usually recommend that people take the shot in the middle of the week so when Shabbos comes around they will be able to enjoy their Shabbos in moderation without going overboard and gaining back all the weight they lost.
What’s nice about it too, is usually when people try other diets they are constantly fighting with their own bodies not to eat and give in to their cravings. It can really make you feel down and frustrated.
But when people take the shots this doesn’t happen! They don’t feel any cravings, they’re not hungry, they don’t feel restricted - they feel great! They’re happy and full of energy again!
Sounds awesome. But why should I choose Kosher Skinny Shots? Can’t any doctor prescribe these shots for me?
That’s a fair question. Yes, it’s true that any doctor can prescribe the shots but you would still need someone to guide you through the process.
But here’s what’s di erent about Kosher Skinny Shots: First, we don’t just prescribe the medication and
leave you to it. Besides being under the care of one of the best doctors in the field, we have a dedicated sta of nutritionists who are ready to answer any questions you may have at any time. We’re here to help you figure it all out and will do everything we can to ensure your long term success.
Second, we work with a high level pharmacy that undergoes regular FDA inspections to make sure that the medications that we use are of the best quality and are absolutely safe.
But that's not all. We also o er the most cost-e ective and gentle solution out there.
To buy a one month supply of shots at a time can be very expensive. So we negotiated with our pharmaceutical supplier and created a special package: $1200 for 3 ½ months supply. This is the most cost e ective option per milligram.
You see, the FDA recommends that a person start the first month with 2.5 milligrams every week, the second month they’ll go up to 5 mgs every week and the third month they’ll go up to 7.5 mgs a week.
long as possible. We do this for several reasons:
One, because it's healthier that way. No one wants to take medication they don’t really need.
Two, if you take a smaller dose it is easier to keep the weight down and continue eating healthily even when you stop taking the shots. If you become dependent on a large dose and suddenly stop taking it, then the cravings will come back really strong and cause you to gain weight.
KNOW? DIDYOU
Most people lose between 8-20 lbs a month
Why does the dosage go up? Because the body can adjust to the small dose and it may not work so well anymore so you may need to slowly increase the dose in order to continue feeling the e ects of the medication.
Now this is not a general rule. It's just what the FDA recommends.
At Kosher Skinny Shots we believe that it's best to keep a person on the smallest dose possible for as
And finally, it’s a lot cheaper this way. When you take less medication it costs way less. So when a person buys a package for 3.5 months it can often last them much longer. It can last up to 4 or even 5 months because they’re taking a smaller dose.
But most importantly, at Kosher Skinny Shots, we’re there with you throughout the entire process from beginning to end. We provide you with full nutritional, emotional and technical support at no extra cost. From the time you take your first shot until the end when we help you wean o the medication and guide you on what to eat and how to keep the weight o ; we’re there for you all the way to make sure that you get the best results.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
QHi. This is actually the second time I am sending in a question. I read your column every week. Your answers are always on target. I am 52 years old. Weighing the same, up or down five pounds, for the last twenty years. I eat healthy and exercise regularly. Since Pesach I gained eight pounds, that I could not lose. I tried intermittent fasting, drinking more water and watching what I eat. The number on the scale would not budge. A friend told me that over fifty we cannot eat carbs. I stopped (with the exception of one slice whole wheat bread, because I believe in Pas Shacharis, and Shabbos I eat carbs but in moderation) BH I lost all eight pounds. Is this my new reality? Are carbs really so bad? Thank you in advance.
AFirstly, thank you for your feedback. Before I address your carb intake, let’s understand what is happening in your body as you age. A slowing metabolism can lead to weight gain each year even if you don’t eat much more than usual. Metabolism is the combination of all the chemical processes that allow an organism to sustain life. For humans, this includes the conversion of energy from food into energy for life-sustaining tasks such as breathing, circulating blood, building and repairing cells, digesting food, and eliminating waste.
Why Does Metabolism Slow Down as You Age?
Loss of muscle mass. As you age, you naturally lose muscle mass. As a result, you burn calories at a lower rate.
Less active. As you get older, you may get less physical activity than you used to. Not getting enough exercise can lead to weight gain and cardiovascular disease. These conditions also contribute to the slowing of your metabolism. Gender and genes. These also play a role in your metabolism rate. Men typically have a faster metabolism because they have more muscle mass, heavier bones, and less body fat.
It is very easy to gain a pound a week! For example, if you eat a bowl of ice cream every night – about 500 calories – you will have consumed 3,500 extra calories that week, which amounts to a pound of fat. Multiply this by 52 weeks a year and you can see a significant weight gain from consuming just one extra treat a night. If you were to up your workouts to counteract this, then that is a different story. Maintaining muscle mass is
the key to preventing weight gain, but it can be challenging because after age 45, the average person loses an estimated 1 percent of muscle mass each year. By age 30, your metabolism starts to slow down. By this age you may notice that losing weight isn’t as easy as it used to be. This happens because as you get older, you move less. If you aren’t physically active, you could lose 3% to 5% of muscle mass each decade. At 40, our body starts to lose muscle mass naturally. This process is called sarcopenia. Even if you’re active, your body will still lose some muscle. During this time, fat will start to form instead of muscle. This also slows down your metabolism, depending on how much muscle mass you’ve lost.
Now that we have clarity on this, let’s understand that carbs are not necessarily the only culprit. Having too many healthy treats (think sushi, acai bowls, protein bars, sourdough, granola) and having too many healthy items that are high in fats such as nuts, meats, oils, salad dressings and avocado, can also help you pack on fat, even though it is healthy. So, ask yourself why you think that carbs are the only culprit. Perhaps it can be other healthy nibbles accumulating as well as a less active lifestyle? Personally, I do not think that you should be cutting out carbs fully, rather you can utilize your carbs in healthier forms such as by adding sweet potato or quinoa to your meals, or adding carb style veggies such as squashes and beets. Even with the healthy carb items, moderation is key as having more than what your body needs will lead to extra calories that if not burnt off will accumulate to a weight gain.
I hope that you got the clarification needed!

This week’s Parsha includes the Mitzvah of Shiluach Haken. If you find a bird’s nest with eggs and wish to take the eggs, you must first send away the mother bird.
You are walking through the park with your family on a fine Spring day. You are breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the light breeze. As you pass between two flowering cherry trees, your sister calls, “Look! Look up in the tree! There’s a bird’s nest!” You look up to see that indeed there is a nest in one of the lower branches with a proud pigeon that looks like the mama bird hovering over her eggs.Your mother smiles and says, “Did you know there is a special Mitzvah called Shiluach Haken? If you wanted to take the bird’s eggs, it would be a Mitzvah to send away the mother bird first!”
DELVING DEEPER
The Mitzvah of Shiluach Haken is a Chok, a type of Mitzvah that is beyond logic. The reason we do the Mitzvah is purely because Hashem tells us to. At the same time, we can and should certainly find life lessons from such Mitzvos. In the case of this Mitzvah, we can learn to be especially compassionate. If we are so careful with the feelings of even a mother bird that we send her away so she doesn’t feel the loss of her eggs being taken, how much more so we should be careful with the feelings of our fellow humans!
BRING IT HOME
What is something you can do to help a classmate or sibling feel included and loved?
This Mitzvah is so important that the Torah says, “Those who fulfill this Mitzvah will be blessed with a long life!”
Chocolate Bird’s Nest PARSHA
Divide chocolate chips: ¾ Cup in the large bowl and ¼ Cup in the small bowl, microwave for 3 minutes and set aside.
To create the nest, spoon the mixture over the aluminum foil, covering as much as possible.
Remove the nest from the freezer and carefully place it on a plate. Gently peel off the foil to reveal the chocolate nest.
Place parchment paper on the baking sheet , then scrunch aluminum foil in a circular shape on top.
Prepare the chocolate egg mold, using the small bowl of melted chocolate spread chocolate over each mold, and freeze for 45 minutes.
Place the eggs inside the edible nest and use it as a centerpiece to share the treat and lesson with all!
Mix 2 cups of pretzel sticks some of which should be cracked for added texture, into the large bowl of melted chocolate.
Carefully remove each half egg from the mold, and fill one half with sprinkles or candies. Line the top with melted chocolate, cover with the other half, and repeat for all your eggs.
SUPPLIES
1 Tbsp. Small Candies/Sprinkles
1 ¼ Cups of Chocolate Chips
2 Bowls (1 Large and 1 Small)
2 Cups of Pretzel Sticks
Chocolate Egg Mold
Small Baking Sheet
Parchment Paper
2 Plastic Spoons
Aluminum Foil

Three times a year these areas are measured using the Head Start ELOF to enable us to track the children's readiness for Kindergarten and enable our teachers to develop individualized strategies to help our children increase their skills. The results are used in curriculum and planning decisions to promote school readiness goals. The results of our assessment data represent significant gains for all children. School Readiness Spring 2024: All four and five year old's tested met school readiness kindergarten entry goals. Children Meeting or Exceeding Widely Held Expectations: Physical 96%, Social/Emotional 94%, Language 97%, Cognitive 100%, Literacy 97%, Math 91%.
