POWER TO BE

Recap: Mrs. Gordon calls Devorah and tells her that she is officially accepting the job at her sister-inlaw’s agency.

Casey pulls Mr. Kleinberg into conversation, talking about how he got into drugs. Mr. Kleinberg is left wondering once again if the two of them are so different at their core.

The bail hearing is scheduled, and Harry the lawyer begins talking to Shachne about a possible plea deal.

Bruchi, sitting lonely at home, thinks back to the many times she’d put her classmates down and wonders if she deserves the treatment they’re giving her now.

CHAPTER 41

Mrs. Gordon tiptoed out of the bedroom, closing the door softly behind her as she snuck a peek at the tousled hair spreading across 3 pillowcases. The kids were sleeping.

She padded downstairs to a muted universe of sounds: Chayala, animated on the phone about their latest class prez breakout. Nachman, diligent in his study over a sefer.

It was her house on nighttime mode. She let her bones relax.

Time for cleanup, but first, her coffee break. Or actually, tea, so she would be able to fall asleep

tonight. She sure needed that sleep.

Random musings about various tasks on her principal to-do list flitted through her mind as she pulled the tea bag string.

I never heard from Layala what happened with the test she was supposed to give. And Pessy was supposed to follow up with the students who failed, I have to ask her what happened.

No, that wasn’t where her mind was supposed to take her now! She was off now.

Time to think about Chayala, or Perela, or Devoiry.

But for some reason, all her little angels smiling at her in her mind’s eye seemed perfectly content to let Bnos Golda take back over the reins.

Right, Mrs. Klein asked me to speak to Mr. Seidman about the upcoming trip. We need to book the buses in advance, and we’re probably too late, already. How are we going to find drivers?

The tea was warm, soothing. If only her thoughts would stop racing.

Next year, I won’t have to deal with Mr. Seidman. I hope Devorah’s boss is easy to work with. She claims he is…

Her tea drained, Mrs. Gordon got up to tackle the housework.

Just as she started soaping the dishes, the phone rang.

Sigh.

She hoped this was absolutely unrelated to school.

The towel wasn’t on the hook, so it took her an extra minute to get her hands dry. By the time she got to the phone, it had stopped ringing, but she could still see the name on the caller ID.

Seidman???

Was he in the middle of reading her brain? Mrs. Gordon flushed guiltily at the uncomplimentary thoughts she’d been thinking.

Before she could do anything else, though, her cell phone sent out a ringtone.

She grabbed it from the shelf above the counter and flipped it open. Yes, it was Mr. Seidman.

Calling her at home…?

Before she could think, she pressed Accept.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Mrs. Gordon, Mr. Seidman speaking. Do you have a few minutes to speak now?”

Too cordial. Too formal.

What did Mr. Seidman want to speak about?

Mrs. Gordon let her heart start hammering, but she modulated her voice carefully.

“Sure, what can I do for you, Mr. Seidman?”

“I heard some very interesting news through the grapevine today,” Mr. Seidman said, and Mrs. Gordon was shocked, but he actually sounded… insulted?

Hurt?

Yikes, what was going on here?

Mrs. Gordon said nothing.

“I don’t know if I should have been the last to know, but it sounds like you are less than happy at Bnos Golda, and are looking for employment elsewhere. Specifically, at Aspire Education Services. Am I right?”

What was Tim thinking?

Josh wasn’t sure, and the waters of the Tigris weren’t giving him any answers either.

He was off the grid here in this remote part of Iraq, where even his

tech-savvy friends wouldn’t locate him. It was his Plan C, which went into effect as soon as he heard what Tim had done.

Tim, as the CEO and owner of Tee, had basically gone and announced to the world that he had access to all of Finance2’s data – which sent the world right onto Josh’s tail. Sure, he had enough scapegoats and backup plans going that he didn’t feel afraid.

Out of all of the tech elite friends he had, he was the only one who actually was prepared for every eventuality, with enough bunkers around the world to keep him alive even if the rest of the world had finished itself off.

That was how he was able to slowly but steadily keep working toward his goal of controlling the world. With Finance2, he’d gotten so close. Now, his closest friend had thrown decades of progress into the digital garbage can.

Not that he hadn’t gotten enough out of that deal to keep the next phase of the plan going. Hard cash could do a lot more for world dominion than people ever thought about.

Because he’d met very few people in his life that could say no to the kind of money Josh could proffer.

The question was, which of his ideas were most likely to get him to the next step?

As much as Finance2 had helped him dictate to people how to spend their money, that wasn’t enough. He had to create a system that would tell people what to do in every facet of their lives.

Only once he had a system in place for that, could he hope to manipulate the world to follow his own blueprint.

He was aware that the collapse of Finance2 made his task all the more difficult. People would be far less likely to trust AI with their personal information now.

So he had to aim now from another angle.

As Josh contemplated this, his expression blank, the waters in the riverbank below surged forward.

Really, with the kind of cash he had at his disposal, there was an easy way to do this.

Pay enough money to put a puppet president at the helm of the most powerful country in the world. Then dictate that country’s policy. It was easy, but would it be effective enough?

Josh contemplated this, looking at the river thoughtfully.

“I don’t think there’s much to this case anymore, actually,” DA prosecutor Adam Pebner said, leaning against the back of his chair.

“Just two weeks ago, everyone was out for this guy’s blood. You sure we can let him go so easily?” Ryan Freis looked skeptical.

“As long as we put someone else in the chair. Let’s be honest, the Kleinberg scandal is the type of thing that blows over. The whole media and internet was talking about him for those few days, but by now, everyone’s lost interest. Who’s going to care if he’s out on bail? By now, everyone’s much more interested in throwing dirt at Tee and begging the FTC to regulate them than thinking about Kleinberg sitting in jail.”

“That’s true, Tee was definitely a big distraction. But think about the headline that Kleinberg is out on bail. I can just see those opinion editorials blasting the ineffective government who can’t put a guy like Kleinberg behind bars, and pointing out how people like him are notorious for escaping and evading trial.”

Adam looked thoughtful. Was Kleinberg really a flight risk?

When you looked at the case without all the distortions that the media had painted in, he really had very little to do with the criminal aspects of Finance2. What he had done was drive the bank he managed into the ground, in the span of just a few hours. But that wasn’t something the public cared about.

“It really will depend on the offer they bring to the table,” Adam finally

said. “If they can convince the judge that he’s not a flight risk, then I don’t see too many arguments that need to be made to the contrary, especially when we know that we’d prefer a plea deal.”

Ryan looked mulish.

“You don’t sound too much like the prosecutor in this trial. More like the defense attorney.”

“Skip the bail, Ryan, let’s work on a plea deal worth bargaining over.”

Tzippy Retek picked up a bag of Drizzilicious from the spread of nosh on her bedroom floor, opening it and taking out a handful to crunch.

“Drizzilicious for supper?” Mali asked from her position, sprawled across the rug. “You think that’s going to fill you up?”

“Drizzilicious is just the first course,” Tzippy said, smiling as she crunched louder. “Want some?”

Mali accepted a handful.

“What’s on the rest of the menu, then, Tzips?” Baila Stefansky asked.

Tzippy shrugged. “Look at the floor, help yourself. I raided the nosh cabinet, but we can always go to the grocery next door if we need more. I’ll tell my mother we have a murder test and we need the nosh to keep us going.”

“Nah, you can feed an army with all of this,” Chevy said, gesturing to the nosh spread out on the floor.

There was a short silence, as Tzippy and Baila thought back to Bruchi Kleinberg’s elaborate study parties, thrown nightly in her mansion.

There, the most exotic nosh was always on the menu, and Bruchi often ordered takeout for all the girls too.

Mali and Chevy, having never been invited to those erstwhile parties, knew exactly what Tzippy and Baila were thinking about.

“I wonder who Bruchi is studying with,” Mali said tentatively, knowing that the other girls would understand exactly why she was thinking about their classmate.

Tzippy shrugged. “Probably Zlaty,” she said.

“She’s probably not taking the test,” Chevy said. “I don’t think she took a stitch of notes a whole week. I sit right near her, so I know.”

There was another silence this time.

“Do you feel bad for her?” Mali asked, looking at Tzippy.

Tzippy recoiled, stung at the pointed question. “Of course I feel bad for her! You chap what a nebach she is? But she doesn’t want anyone to talk to her, she’s just snobbing everyone out. So fine, she doesn’t want, we’ll leave her alone!”

Tzippy flushed as she made her little speech, knowing that she was one of the girls who was benefitting from Bruchi’s lack of presence on the social scene. A natural leader, Tzippy had already begun taking over the eighth grade classroom social dynamics in a lot of ways.

Mali looked troubled. “I don’t know… that’s just Bruchi’s way, you know? To talk like that. I don’t know if it really means that she doesn’t want anyone to talk to her.”

Surprise registered on Tzippy’s face. Why was Mali pushing the case? Since when did Mali care so much about Bruchi Kleinberg, who had never given Mali the time of day?

“Whatever,” Chevy said in a singsong

voice. “Can we get back to history? We, like, hardly even finished the first chapter!”

“Yeah, let’s start again. Sooo, anyone wants to read their notes?” Baila asked, avoiding the other girls’ eyes so as not to get pulled into the awkward conversation.

“I’ll continue,” Tzippy offered, picking up her notes. She cast another sidelong glance at Mali, who still looked troubled.

But why?

As Tzippy read her notes aloud, an image of Bruchi’s shuttered face rose in her mind. Bruchi walked around the school hallways with a chip on her shoulder that said, “Don’t touch me!” but who said that was what she really wanted?

Except for Zlaty, Bruchi hadn’t let anyone get too close to her since her father’s arrest. But if Tzippy were fully honest, they hadn’t really tried… Tzippy didn’t like the uncomfortable feelings Mali had stirred up, but she couldn’t ignore them now that they’d raised their head.

Was there something that she, Tzippy, should have been doing for Bruchi?

Especially if she was kind of taking over Bruchi’s role as queen of the class?

The thought gave Tzippy a nervous thrill that went through all her veins. If she was queen of the class, she definitely was not going to be a snob like Bruchi had been. She would be happy to talk to every girl in the class and make sure everyone felt included.

So maybe, that meant talking to Bruchi, too?

ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 29: Elky spends time trying to figure out where to put her precious vouchers (which she puts into her new handbag), and is thus late for work. She meets Teresa on the way, and Teresa invites Elky and some friends to her sister’s birthday party the next day. Elky asks Naomi’s grandmother what she should do, and Babba Sarah Liba says that a few girls have to go, but that Elky shouldn’t be one of them.

CHAPTER THIRTY

Tuesday 2.11.93

I would like to sincerely request that you enable Elka Kush to make up the hours she has missed from work due to feeling unwell, so that she can get her regular monthly salary. With respect, Dr. Annie Katzburg

The doctor raised her head from the pen and paper and looked at Sara Liba. “In the normal world, before the rise of the Reich,” she spat out in an angry whisper, “there were workers’ rights. Rights! Basic ones! Someone who was sick had sick days, and was paid by his employer for those days!”

“I heard about it,” Sara Liba said. “My father, Hashem yinkom damo, had a shoe store, so those rules probably didn’t apply to him. But for people who worked for someone else, I’m sure it was significant.”

“Very, very significant.” The doctor shook her head. “I imagine that there were conditions, and you couldn’t announce that you were sick every day and get paid as if you worked normally. But it was a basic law that favored the workers. And here? People are choking themselves not to miss even one hour of work. It’s

dreadful.”

Babbe sighed and took the sheet of paper. “They choke themselves?” she asked quietly. Was Elky choking? There had been something strange in her eyes when they’d spoken about the party and the work she would be missing. Was it possible that they were simply starving for bread at home? But why? He worked, she worked…why shouldn’t the money be enough for them to buy food?

“Choking, definitely. Should I give you an example? If Bilhah, the preschool teacher, would have been able to rest a bit more over the years, she wouldn’t be in the state that she’s in today.”

“Yes…” Babbe nodded. After a moment, she shook herself. “Thank you, Doctor. I’ll give this to her.”

The good doctor smiled. “I see that in your community, everything goes through you.”

“Oh, not everything at all.” The older woman chuckled. “It’s just that Elky came yesterday with her mother to ask my advice about something, and I promised to help her out… Maybe I’ll go visit her at home right now and I’ll give this to her. I promised her that you’d agree to write a request to the management, and maybe that would help.”

“Isn’t she invited to the party at the Wangel manor house?”

“She can’t go,” Babbe said lightly. “She doesn’t feel so well, right?”

But Elky didn’t open the door, and all of Sara Liba’s knocking

was futile. Sara Liba didn’t know if Elky was angry at her, and that’s why she wasn’t answering the door, or if there was another reason. She bent down and slid the doctor’s note under the door and then turned from there to Aryeh and Naomi’s house. “Babbe!” Naomi greeted her with a broad smile. “It’s so nice that you came! What did we do to deserve the honor of your visit?”

“Well, obviously, I came to do the mitzvah of bikur cholim,” Babbe said, and marched right over to her grandson’s bed. “How are you, Aryeh?”

“Baruch Hashem,” he said, putting down the brown notebook and pencil on the night table. “It’s great to be back home.”

“I’m sure. What’s this notebook?” she asked curiously. Aryeh’s hesitation lasted a moment. Finally, he said, “If Bais Yaakov girls in this place are learning to read in Lashon Hakodesh, there is no reason for me, weak as my mind may be, to fail for the rest of my life.” He opened the notebook to show his grandmother. Rows and rows of the letter aleph filled the first page, followed by rows upon rows of the letter beis.

“Don’t insult my grandson!” Babbe protested. “Don’t you see that it has nothing to do with your mind?”

“How are you so sure of that?”

“Because you are very clever, and if you struggle with reading, it means that it’s due to other things, not your brains. Maybe it’s a problem with your eyes?”

“I actually see very well baruch Hashem.”

“It’s possible that there are problems that don’t cause blurred vision, but they make the eyes or the brain not able to understand what they are seeing. And besides, you read and write in Hungarian, I saw!”

“I read a line every five minutes, and I can write a line in ten minutes.” Aryeh smiled. “But it doesn’t matter. I find Chumash and Gemara a hundred times harder, and I decided that the time has come for me to try. And until now, I didn’t have a private teacher.”

digest that, Babbe. As it is, she’s very bitter about being told to call in sick for two days so that she could miss the party…”

“It will pass, b’ezras Hashem,” Babbe said calmly.

“And besides, I don’t want to be away from the house today, when Aryeh has finally been released. As it is, I’m out for hours on end…”

“I understand. Now for the second question: Aryeh, you don’t have a salary right now. How do you want me to help you? Should I give you some of our vouchers, or buy you products?”

Aryeh and Naomi exchanged glances for a fraction of a second. “It’s alright, Babbe,” Aryeh said hoarsely. “We’re managing. Thanks.”

Babbe didn’t give up. “The preschool teacher’s salary is almost nothing,” she said. “Should I give you vouchers? Or just buy the things? Believe me, Zeide and I have too much. How much do two old people eat already?”

“We have savings, Babbe,” Aryeh said.

“I can’t do it to Elky,” she finally whispered. “She won’t be able to digest that, Babbe.

“I’m in favor,” Babbe said with a wink. Then she decided to drop the sensitive topic. “Naomi, what’s doing at the preschool now, when you are not there?”

“Rivku and I are taking turns with the breaks. Yesterday she left for an hour; today I did.” She put the tea down on the table. “You can sit down, Babbe—please, don’t stand.”

“So I had the zechus to come just when it was your break?” Babbe took a seat. “I don’t want to disturb you. I just want to ask you two questions. Would you go to the Wangels’ party, Naomi?”

“Why me?”

“Because you are strong.”

Naomi was quiet and glanced at her husband. He didn’t say a word.

“I can’t do it to Elky,” she finally whispered. “She won’t be able to

“Yes, I know. Naomi’s mother, your aunt, told me about the wedding gift you got from Wangel. Very nice, all well and good, but savings are an important thing that shouldn’t get wasted every time something unexpected crops up. You are still young. Keep those extra vouchers for more urgent expenses. So you’ll get food from me now, and just take it and say thank you.”

“Thank you,” Aryeh said. Naomi echoed him. And then they were both quiet.

“Or you can go to the party this evening, Naomi. They promised a monetary gift,” Babbe added with another wink. “I was just joking. I understand you very well, and I won’t ask you again to go. We’ll send a few others, from our better girls. Not that there’s anyone as wonderful as you!” She smiled at Naomi. ***

“Maybe you should give shiurim for the wives of the Russian workers,” Dena’s mother-inlaw suggested with a wink.

Dena was horrified at the idea. “I can barely speak Yiddish!” she said, before realizing that it was just a joke. “What else can a woman do in Vienna?”

“Work in an office, be a teacher, or preschool teacher… But most women who are mothers of small children, like you are, stay home and raise their children.”

“But I have no one to raise in the morning,” Dena muttered miserably. “The boys are in cheder then, and the house is empty.”

“And what about taking care of things in your house?”

“I don’t like to do that all day long. It’s boring for me.”

“How about cleaning? Is your house clean enough?” She couldn’t believe that she had the guts to speak this way, as a shvigger, to her daughter-in-law. But what could she do if the Israeli daughters-in-law apparently had no qualms about baring their weaknesses to their mothers-in-law…

“Yes. The cleaning lady cleans so much better than me anyway.” Dena sounded on the verge of despair.

“So perhaps you can help with the account books at the factory.” Finally, Bentzy’s mother seemed to realize that this was a nearly vital need. “Come over each morning. On some days I’ll teach you how to do it, and on the other days we’ll go shopping. There’s no lack of things for a good wife to do.”

She glanced at her daughter-in-law. “But tell me, when you lived in Israel, what did you do all day?”

“I did some substituting in a playgroup for two- and threeyear-old kids.”

“And on the other days?”

“I don’t remember.”

“So, you would spend time with your sisters?” The devoted shvigger was trying to hone in on the magnitude of the difference. “Or with your mother?”

“Not much…” Dena was also wondering why things were so different now. “Well, I didn’t have cleaning help there, so I did it all myself. But it’s not only that. I can’t even define it myself, but for some reason, I was never bored there…”

“You don’t have to define the reason.” The older woman tried to steer the conversation back to safer, more familiar territory. “Come over tomorrow. We’ll go shopping a bit, we’ll cook together, and you’ll take the food home for supper. The children and Bentzy will come home to a satisfied mother, yes?”

Dena nodded, understanding that she’d have to suffice with this.

“But you need friends besides me,” her shvigger suddenly added. “There are lots of young women your age in the community; it’s really a whole chevra. They have shiurim and get-togethers, things like that. You need to get to know them; it’s not good that you’re here a few months already and you still hardly know anyone. Hey, tomorrow I’m going to invite Charna Krieger to come over! Why didn’t I think of it earlier?”

Without realizing it, Dena shifted on the couch, moving a bit further in the other direction. “Charna Krieger?” she echoed. “The one who we met two weeks ago at Katzengold when we went to buy winter clothes?”

“Yes, yes, that’s her. She’s a sweet girl, around your age. Her mother and I have been friends for years. Before you came to Vienna, she told me to let you know that she’d love to get to know you. But then, her baby was born, and she got busy… I think you’d get along really nicely with her. And then she can introduce you to all the others! So she’ll come here tomorrow, okay? Do you prefer morning or in the afternoon with the children? Oh, I can really see the two of you becoming friends!”

Hadran Alach 'Kol Hatorah Kulah'

(We will Return to You ‘The Entire Torah’)

This most enigmatic sign - even to Talmidei Chachamim - was emblazoned on the screen at the D-City complex in Ma’ale Adumim last week. All 300 guests of Mr. and Mrs. Shlomo Perl and all the talmidei chachamim present were familiar with the first two words – they are recited at the conclusion of each tractate of the Talmud, or the conclusion of the entire Talmud. However, this sign declares the conclusion of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ - the entire breadth of Torah scholarship! Yes, this gathering was to celebrate just that. The questions that all asked were: Who defined what ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ encompasses and how is this possible?

This is the great legacy of the Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievsky, ztk”l.

The ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ project includes the following works PLUS their commentaries: The 24 sifrei Tanach, Talmud Bavli, Talmud Yerushalmi, Shishah Sidrei Mishnah, the Zohar, Tosefta, Sifra, Sifrei, all the Midrashim, Rambam, Shulchan Aruch and halachic works through to modern times and Sifrei Mussar.

Yissachar-Zevulun

Amid great splendor and grandeur, the Siyum of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ (the Entire Torah) was celebrated. Hundreds of talmidei chachamim fully proficient in Shas and Poskim had toiled for a full year, studying the entire Torah in all its parts. They all participated in a Yissachar-Zevulun partnership with the philanthropist Reb Shlomo Perl of Lawrence, NY. To celebrate the simcha, Mr. and Mrs. Perl were accompanied by their family and many guests from America to be part of this unique celebration in the festively adorned hall.

The Perls’ ‘partners’ in the celebration are all brilliant talmidei chachamim

who studied every page of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ in the names of Mr. and Mrs. Perl.

The renowned Mashpia Hagadol Harav Hagaon Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, electrified the gathering with his address. He declared that the ongoing ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ projects, instituted by Harav Hagaon Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, the Pozna Rov, is a remarkable innovation, ‘unprecedented in this generation’. The Yissachar-Zevulun agreement, under which the 'Yissachars' study ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ in the merit of the 'Zevulun' who supports their learning. Harav Chaim Kanievsky, not only prepared the list of all the sefarim to be included in the learning program,

Admor Harav Refael Abuhatzeira of Ashdod giving divrei brocha. Seated (l to r): Harav Chaim Zalman HaLevi Eisen, Mo"etz and head of the Beis Hora'ah Lishkas Sta"m. but also paskened (ruled) that the Konei Torah (Torah-learning sponsors) are ‘bona fide partners' in the learning itself – meaning that all the learning is attributed as if they learned it themselves, too!

This amazing initiative and its zechus, endorsed by the Sar Hatorah, is what encourages individuals who are blessed with the means to do so, to seek this unique Torah partnership. The zechus of the current cycle of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ is that of Reb Shlomo Perl, sheyicheh, from America, with the entire cycle of learning named after him and his wife Mrs. Ruth Perl, shetichyeh.

Maranan v’Rabbanan

The audience stood with great excitement to welcome Maran Hagaon Hagadol Harav Moshe Sternbuch, shlit”a. He was full of great praise of the idea of the unique learning and the completing ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’.

The renowned Maggid, Harav Hagaon Baruch Rosenblum, shlit”a, delivered an inspiring drashah in praise of the lomdei Torah and konei Torah. He highlighted the words of the Chofetz Chaim in Ahavas Chesed regarding limiting giving tzedakah to one-fifth of one's wealth when giving to the poor or similar causes. However, a YissacharZevulun partnership is considered as a business venture, an investment in acquiring Torah learning and, similarly therefore, there is no limit as to what one is permitted to invest in a business,

even if he invests all his money!

The Admor Harav Refael Abuchatzeira, shlit”a, was warmly received and graced the event with his presence, and delivered wonderful words in praise of the lomdei Torah and konei Torah.

The Skverer Rebbe, shlit”a, sent a letter of divrei brachah to the gathering and which was read on behalf of the Rebbe by his trusted aide Rabbi Shalom Ber Fishel. The Toldos Aharon Rebbe, shlit”a, also attended the Siyum.

‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’

The guests listened to the moving words of the mesayem, Reb Shlomo Perl, who described the sequence of events of his involvement in the project:

"A year ago, in the days leading up to Shavuos, I heard about the wonderful idea and opportunity offered by the Pozna Rov. Namely, the possibility

of acquiring the learning of the entire Shas through the 'Yissachar-Zevulun' arrangement. I immediately knew'I’m in.' Within a week, the Pozna Rov arrived at my office with a 'YissacharZevulun' contract, and I was extremely happy with the investment. However, a few days later, I learned that there was also an option to purchase the learning of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ through a similar arrangement, and which would count, like with the Shas, as if I had learned all of it myself! Moreover, as is recorded in the shtar confirmed by Maran Harav Chaim, after arichus yamim v’shanum, when I come to olam ha’emes, I will have the zechus to sit and learn in the yeshiva shel ma’alah, not only with the Sar Hatorah, but also with the Tannaim and Amoraim, the Rishonim and the Acharonim. I told the Pozna Rov, 'I want the whole Torah, not just Shas.' And indeed, the Pozna Rov arrived with a special 'YissacharZevulun' document written according to the text dictated by Sar HaTorah Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, zt"l.

Hakoras Hatov

Turning to the Pozna Rov, Reb Shlomo said, "The Gemara says at the beginning of Bava Basra, 'Greater is the one who facilitates an action than the one who performs it.' Pozna Rov, this saying of Chazal was said about you! You have granted us this wonderful and immense zechus. My family and I are filled with gratitude to you. It is impossible to imagine the

magnitude of the zechuyos that you have bestowed upon us, and we are deeply thankful for it.

"My partners, the dear avreichim talmidei chachamim - over the last year we were indeed partners. You learned in my name and for my sake. I owe you much gratitude. I thank your wives and your families for allowing you to dedicate yourself to this special learning for many hours every day, on Shabbos and Yom Tov, during vacation time, and at all other available times, to be able to accomplish ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ in just one year. There are truly no words to adequately thank you for the immense zechus you have granted me!"

The Moving Siyum

Emotions were high when the Mashpia Hagadol Reb Elimelech, shlit”a, rose to speak. He recalled the stirring words of the Ohr HaChaim

Hakadosh, referring to Chazal: When a person goes to his eternal rest, it is announced on High, ‘Praised is the one who comes with his learning (Talmudo) in hand," meaning that whatever Torah one learned in this world, he will be able to learn it in the yeshivah shel ma'alah. However, what one did not learn here, they will not be able to understand, even in the yeshivah shel ma'alah.

My friends, we have here in our midst, a Yid – Reb Shlomo - who will take his place in the yeshivah shel ma'alah, and all that will be studied there will be familiar to him. He will not be missing any part of the holy Torah. Simply, he had the zechus to learn ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ – the Entire Torah! The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh states, even one who has made a kinyan to purchase the learning of Torah has the zechus and will understand in the yeshivah shel ma'alah when they learn what he

has learned!"

3 Generations

Great excitement was palpable through the hall when Reb Shlomo’s two sons and his grandson ascended the dais to make siyumim on masechtos of Bava Kamma and Bava Metzia, which they had studied as part of the ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ framework. Reb Shlomo had tears as he watched them following in his footsteps. He was overcome with a deep understanding of what is essential in the life of a Yid and what is secondary. They were followed by Reb Shlomo who ascended to recite the Siyum, saying, "Hadran Alach Maseches Niddah v’’Kol Hatorah Kulah’ - We shall return to you; our mind is on you; and you on us. You shall not be forgotten by us, and we shall not be

forgotten by you, not in this world and not in the world to come." A shudder passed through the audience as they heard these sublime and wonderful words.

Reb Shlomo recited the brachah Shehecheyanu, with the Shem umalchus (he had purchased a new garment for the occasion to permit the recitation of the full bracha). He was emotional and his voice broke during the brachah and as he struggled to finish the brachah, tears of joy ran down his cheeks. At this point, there was not a dry eye in the hall.

Am I the Naïve One?

The event was concluded with a powerful address by Hagaon Harav Nisan Kaplan, shlit”a, Rosh Yeshivas Da'as Aharon. "For several months now, I have been learning in chavrusa with my dear friend Reb Shlomo. Honestly, at first, I thought I was doing

him a favor by learning with him, but now I realize that I am in chavrusa with someone who has already learned ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’. It is he who is doing me a kindness by agreeing to learn together with me."

Harav Kaplan mentioned that Reb Shlomo had asked him a question that troubled him greatly: “How is it possible that there are not hundreds, if not dozens, of benefactors lining up at the door of the Pozna Rav to purchase ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’?

"Am I the naïve one? This ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ is an enormous zechus. There is no shortage of Yidden blessed with wealth. Why aren't they coming forward to do what I did? They should all be jumping at the opportunity to merit ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’, when all they need is a commitment of funds, something which, baruch Hashem, they do not lack...

"I told Reb Shlomo, and I say to you, my friends, to merit ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’, one needs to have a special zechus. Not everyone merits this! Not everyone who has been blessed with wealth can merit and purchase with their money the privilege of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’. This zechus belongs only to a select few - those who value the Torah with all their heart, those who support talmidei chachomim consistently, and those who honor talmidei chachamim without expecting them to honor them back because of his money. A special and fine person like Reb Shlomo, is one who can merit such a wonderful and unique opportunity!"

In a fascinating address, Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Shaul Kanievsky, shlit”a, beloved son of Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievsky ztk"l, gave personal testimony of how his father came to formulate the learning plan for the ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ project.

The project is the brainchild of the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Halevi Eisen, shlit”a. At one point, he was concerned whether even a 'Yissachar-Zevulun' pact for ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ could enable the 'Zevulun' to be truly considered as someone who has ‘learned it all’, even if brilliant talmidei chachamim he supports do so in his name?

The Pozna Rov presented this question to Maran Sar HaTorah, who deliberated on the issue until he came to a clear and unequivocal decision.

The Project Unfolds

Harav Yitzchak Shaul shared how the program evolved ‘on his father's shtender’. He described the entire process until his father gave his consent, confirming that when the koneh Torah (Torah purchaser), the Zevulun, would reach Heaven after his passing, it will be considered as if he himself had learned Kol Hatorah Kulah’! This decision was not taken lightly. Rav Chaim asked to revisit the matter again and again, until he signed a remarkable letter confirming this conclusion.

"Some four years ago, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen conceived the brilliant idea of the ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ project. However, before it was made public, he came to my father zt"l and presented the proposal. We deliberated at length with my father zt"l and explored the issue:

“The Rema writes in Hilchos Talmud Torah that one who is unable to learn Torah, whether due to inability or lack of understanding, should provide financial support to another who does learn Torah. The zechus of the supporter is that he is considered as if he himself had learned that Torah.

Record it on the Matzeiva

“We asked my father zt"l: What is

certain, is that the supporter has a share in the Torah learned by the one he supports, as the Gemara already discusses the 'Yissachar-Zevulun' agreement. The question is whether if, for example, a talmid chacham would be supported to learn the masechta Brachos, does it count for the supporter as if he too learned Brachos himself? Bottom line - when he comes to Heaven, will it be considered that he learned Brachos, or will he only have the merit of facilitating someone else to learn it?

“My father zt"l paskened (ruled) that since the Rema writes that it is considered as if he himself had learned it, which means that the 'Zevulun' learns every word that the 'Yissachar' learns.

“Therefore, the idea proposed by

Dovi Perl, grandson of Reb Shlomo and son of Benny, makes a siyum on Masechet Bava Metzia.
Harav Avrohom Eisen, Pozna Rov, addresses the Siyum.
Moshe Perl, son of Reb Shlomo, makes a siyum on Masechet Bava Kamma.
Reb Shlomo Perl, flanked by Harav Avrohom Eisen and Harav Nisan Kaplan, is presented with a leather-bound Sefer Talmudo B’yado listing all the sefarim learned under Kol Hatorah Kulah, and the corresponding names of each of the Talmidei Chachomim who learned on his behalf.

Harav Eisen, shlit”a, to make a special agreement to learn ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’, was very pleasing to my father and he reviewed and signed the shtar (document).”

In fact, the Sar Hatorah paskened in writing to the Pozna Rov, that a Zevulun who had acquired Torah through a Yissachar-Zevulun pact, could have that Torah learning recorded on his matzeiva that the Zevulun had learned it in this world.

Until Rav Chaim’s Last Breath

Harav Yitzhak Shaul noted that “the first shtar of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ that my father zt"l signed, stated that the learning of that ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ cycle was to be completed on 17 Adar

II 5782, exactly a year after the signing. My friends, that turned out to be the very day that my father zt"l was laid to rest!

“It was as if, he did not permit his pure body to come into contact with the clods of earth in his grave as long as his legacy ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah' had not been consolidated for future generations with its first Siyum! “Chazal say that sometimes Hashem waits for a person to perform a certain mitzvah before taking his neshama, such as where great Gedolei Yisroel make the brocha Shehakol before their passing. It seems as if Hashem was waiting for my father to accomplish this zechus too, so that ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ could be learned within a year under the 'Yissachar-Zevulun' agreement, and then he would ascend

to the yeshivah shel ma'alah. Tonight’s Siyum is already the third year that ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ has been learned and completed, and is surely a great zechus for my beloved father ztk"l.

Appreciation

“I am grateful to the Pozna Rov, Harav Avrohom Halevi Eisen, who was very beloved by and close to my father zt"l. For years, he would come to my father in Bnei Brak with the rabbanim gaonim of the Shas Yiden network to test them orally throughout Shas.

My father had much pleasure from these visits and encouraged him to open ten such kollelim. Already, Harav Eisen has opened seven kollelim with a complement of 125 brilliant talmidei chachamim geonim, all who know Shas cold. All these zechuyos are to the credit of Harav Eisen. However, at tonight’s Siyum of ‘Kol Hatorah Kulah’ the greatest zchus belongs to the mesayem, the one who read the Hadran and who completed it all, the Zevulun Hagadol, Reb Shlomo Perl, shlit”a.

“Yehi ratzon that after arichas yomim tovim v’shonim, when Reb Shlomo comes to the Olam Ha’emes, they will surely announce before him, “Blessed is he who comes here with his Torah learning in hand” and may he be blessed with an abundance of brachah and hatzlachah in all that he does."

DID YOU KNOW?

The 17th of Tammuz marks the beginning of the 3 weeks, where we mourn the destruction of Yerushalayim and the Beis Hamikdash. Although we are very sad during these 3 weeks, there are some special mitzvahs we can do to help build the 3rd Beis Hamikdash.

IMAGINE

After many years of hardships and troubles, the Jews were finally able to build a Beis Hamikdash. Not only was this a grand and beautiful home, it was a home for Hashem and the Shechina, Hashem’s presence. Sadly, it was destroyed, not once but twice. The first was in the times of the Babylonians and the second, in the times of the Romans. During the time of the second Beis Hamikdash, the Romans made a siege around Yerushalayim and no one was allowed to go in or out. On the 17th of Tammuz they broke through the walls of Yerushalayim and started their way towards the Beis Hamikdash. 3 weeks later on Tisha B’av the 2nd Beis Hamikdash was destroyed.

DELVING DEEPER

BRING IT HOME

What good deed can you do to help bring Moshiach?

This is obviously a day of great sadness. But besides for fasting, what can we do to help build the 3rd Beis Hamikdash? During the time from Shiva Asar B’Tammuz to Tisha B’av (when the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed), we can bring a special light into this world, the light that prepares the world for Moshiach. But how? Firstly, we can learn about Moshiach - learn about what the world will be like when Moshiach comes and how we can prepare for it. We can also try to be extra kind to our friends and siblings. When Hashem sees us caring for each other, Hashem will bring us the ultimate happiness, the coming of Moshiach.

For the next line, place bricks in between the bricks of the row underneath, for a real wall look. Continue the wall until finished.

Using your small paintbrush, paint little grass weeds in between the bricks, with green paint.

Mizrach Wall Art PARSHA

Place one rectangle on the bottom of the canvas. Dip the larger paintbrush into water, paint over entire tissue paper.

Leaving a little space in between the bricks, completing the line. Peel off the tissue paper.

Place the Mizrach letters onto the canvas and paint letters using purple paint.

Let dry and your Mizrach Wall Art is complete! You can hang it up as a reminder that every good action we do brings Moshiach closer!

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QI am a watermelon lover. Is it true that watermelon is high in sugar? What is your opinion on watermelon when one is trying to lose weight?

AThe name "watermelon" is derived from its high-water content. Watermelons are composed of about 92% water, which is reflected in their name. The term comes from the Old English word "watermeloun," which in turn comes from the Latin "pepo" and the Greek "pepon," meaning "large melon."

Is watermelon considered a healthy fruit? Yes, watermelon is considered a healthy fruit. It is low in calories and rich in essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Here is the nutritional content of watermelon:

-Watermelon is low in calories. One cup (152 grams) of diced watermelon contains approximately 46 calories.

- Watermelon contains natural sugars. One cup of diced watermelon has about 9.4 grams of sugar.

- One cup of diced watermelon contains about 11.6 grams of carbohydrates, with most of these coming from sugars. For those who are prediabetic or insulin resistant, watermelon can be consumed in moderation. Although it contains natural sugars, its high-water content helps dilute its sugar concentration, and it has

a relatively low glycemic load. However, portion control is crucial. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized dietary advice.

Is Watermelon Dietetic? Watermelon can be part of a dietetic diet due to its low calorie and high-water content, which can help with hydration and satiety. However, as with all foods, moderation is key, especially for individuals monitoring their sugar intake. A study published in 2019 looked at fullness and weight changes after a four-week intervention in overweight adults. The researchers asked one group to consume two cups of fresh watermelon daily. A second group ate lowfat cookies with the same calories as the watermelon. The researchers allowed the groups to eat their snacks at any time of day, during one or multiple sittings, alone, or with other foods. The results were that watermelon promoted more fullness than the cookies, lasting up to 90 minutes after eating. People who ate watermelon lost weight, reduced their waist-to-hip ratios and blood pressure levels, and improved their cholesterol. Obviously, even though watermelon is healthy, moderation is key, as is with any other foods you may be eating.

A

TRUE STORY AS TOLD TO CHAVA L. BEER

Be of the disciples of Aaron… one who loves the creatures and draws them close to Torah. (בי,א :תובא)

“She’s also the Kallah’s aunt?” I asked curiously, eyeing yet another dark sheiteled- blue-eyed, petite woman.

“Yes,” Rivky, the Kallah’s cousin told me.

My brother Yanky was engaged to Goldy Stern. and here we were, miles away from home, celebrating the vort out-of-town. The small hall was swarming with people, most of whom were new to me. And, being the people person (read: yenta) I am, I had to figure it all out. Who was a friend? Who was a neighbor? Who was a relative?

“So, Rivky, your mother and the mechutaneste are from the older ones in the family, right?”

She nodded absentmindedly, eyeing the delectable miniatures and smoothies.

“And there are mostly girls in the family?”

Rivky gingerly picked up a petit four and taking her cue, I took a coconut - covered chocolate. Just to make her feel comfortable, of course.

“Yes. They’re nine sisters and people say they all look alike. I don’t see it, though.”

There was a tap on Rivky’s shoulder.

“Hi, Rivky! Mazel Tov! I told Yossele that you can’t babysit him because you’ll be at the vort too and boy, did he make a fuss…”

“Shiffy, it’s so good to see you!” Rivky grinned, her braces flashing, as she cooed at the infant in the lady’s arms.

“I guess you can’t leave Dina with a babysitter yet.”

“Not yet. But don’t worry; you’ll get your fair share of her pretty soon.”

The unidentified lady turned around to talk to another one of the Steinfeld aunts (three points for me!) and I whispered to Rivky, “This is the last time I’ll nudge you, I promise.”

“So you want to know who Shiffy is?” Rivky smirked.

“Yup!”

“She’s also my aunt.”

“But she looks so different. I mean she’s much taller than all the others. Her sheitel is dirty blond. And her voice, her way of speaking is nothing like your mother or the others..”

Rivky motioned to me to come to the corner of the hall.

“Actually, she isn’t my real aunt. My grandmother sort of adopted her. When she came from Russia many years ago, she joined the Steinfeld family and is totally part of us. I can hardly remember her not being part of the aunts, so too me, she’s an aunt, for all intents and purposes. I babysit her kids all the time and she comes to my productions just like an aunt would.”

“Wow. I would never guess she wasn’t frum from birth. I mean, she blends into the heimishe crowd so well…” •••

Fast forward 10 years.

There I was, with a family of my own, vacationing at Yanky and Goldy’s bungalow in Liberty, New York. After finishing the final page of yet another riveting anthology of true stories, I headed toward the couch to join Goldy for a good schmooze.

“Y’know Goldy, I read so many stories about Baalei Teshuva. But there’s something about knowing someone personally. Remember how amazed I was about how “heimish” Shiffy looks?”

“I sure do. And you wouldn’t believe what that Yossele looks like today! With his full-fledged chassidishe levush and curly peyos…”

“It must be your grandparent’s zechus. Oh, and your aunts, for putting up with an additional family member.”

“That’s true. Especially the aunt that’s just a year older than her. Breindy had to share a lot with her, not only her room.”

I dug my hand into the popcorn and contemplated this all.

Suddenly, an intriguing thought entered my mind.

“Why is she named Shiffy? Did her parents actually give her a yiddishe name at birth?”

“No, she chose the name.”

“But Shifra isn’t the typical kind of name to choose. I would think she would choose something more traditional like Esther, Chana,

Sarah, even Yehudis.”

“Good question. Let me tell you about it.”

August, 1995

Pinsk, Ukraine

“Rest hour will be over in 10 minutes!” boomed the loudspeaker.

Natasha put her pen down and packed away her letter. She wanted to finish writing but Shiffy had told her she’d be waiting in the back of the bunkhouse for her at 3:20. She jumped off the bed and made a dash for the door. Shiffy was already waiting in the front.

“Come, Natasha,” Shiffy grinned, placing her arm over the 12-yearold’s shoulder, “I want to talk to you privately so no one else will get jealous.”

The twosome hurried to the back of the bunkhouse.

“Natasha, I must tell you how proud I am of you. I watched you bentsch today after lunch and I was so impressed! You worked so hard to look inside and sing along, even though you told me it’s a big challenge for you to read Hebrew.”

With a flourish, Shiffy pulled a Nutty Buddy out of her skirt pocket and handed it to Natasha.

Her blue eyes grew wide as she eyed the tempting treat.

“Th..thank you, Shiffy! What Bracha do I make on this ice cream?”

The hike was taking much longer than expected and the girls were exhausted. Shiffy, though, seemed to be made of other stuff.

“Come on girls, only 2 km to go. Let’s sing as we march! ‘Slooshai Izrael Boog Semagooshee…’

Huffing and puffing, the group of 12-year-olds ambled up the hill, singing and chanting along with their counselor. Finally, they reached a clearing, where some other bunks were already waiting. They were about to sit down on a log and pose for a picture, when oops! Natasha slipped on a pebble

and bruised her knee. Shiffy ran over, pouring the remains of her water bottle on the wound. Dabbing the blood with a tissue, the devoted counselor shooed away the girls who had crowded around.

“Natasha’s fine. She just needed a souvenir of this grand hike! Give us a minute and we’ll be smiling for the camera!”

Natasha smiled between her tears as she eyed her torn stockings.

“I’ll sew them up for you, don’t worry,” Shiffy said softly, reading her mind. “And take a drink, your face is so flushed.” She rummaged through the girl’s bag and found a cold bottle.

“You also drink?” Natasha asked.

“I finished my water. It washed your boo-boo. Don’t worry, we’ll be back in camp soon.”

Once again, Shiffy’s kindness warmed Natasha’s heart.

September, 1999

Monsey, New York

“Come in, Natasha! Welcome to our home, now your home!”

Gitty Steinfeld took the heavy suitcase and dragged it into what would now be Natasha’s bedroom. The shy girl, exhausted and overwhelmed, followed Mrs. Steinfeld into the dining room, where the Steinfeld sisters had set up a beautiful welcome party, replete with rugelach, soda and overnight potato kugel.

Natasha looked dizzy as the girls introduced themselves. It would take a while until she got all their names straight. But at last, she was part of a warm Jewish family, where everyone kept the mitzvos openly and lovingly.

There was so much to learn, so much to get used to. American culture, Monsey culture. Bais Liba’s culture, Yiddish, English, mitzvos, minhagim. Rabbi and Mrs. Steinfeld coached Natasha along, helping her acclimate to her new life.

“Natasha, in our school, we have

Jewish names. You want to feel comfortable among the girls. So how about we make a kiddush this Shabbos and give you a Jewish name?”

Natasha beamed.

“Yes, yes! I can choose my name?” Mrs. Steinfeld nodded.

“We will celebrate this special occasion with a kiddush, a party, in shul. We are so proud to have you join our family and community and we’re so excited that you’ll have a Jewish identity. Think about it. Let me know tomorrow what name you’ll be choosing…”

“To make sure it’s good?” “Yes.”

Natasha placed her palms under her chin and started thinking. This was a massive decision. Ever since she could remember, she was Natasha. Daddy, a non-Jew, had named her after his grandmother, and she was more than eager to let go of that name, at least here, among frum Yidden. But what name should she choose? From her mother’s side, there was her babushka who had passed away a few years ago. That was a choice. How about going back another generation to Babushka’s mother whom she had heard so much about? Or maybe give after one of the Imahos? Wouldn’t it be fitting to call herself after one of the founders of Klal Yisroel?

After tossing and turning until 2 am, Natasha finalized her decision. She would need to run it by Mommy, the way she now called Mrs. Steinfeld, and she hoped it would pass inspection.

Shabbos morning. Carefully slipping her brand-new Shabbos dress out of the plastic, Natasha felt her heart jumping with excitement. Soon, it would be official. Goodbye, Natasha. Welcome…Shiffy!

“Viykera Shema BiYisrael, Shifra!” called out the Baal Korei. And Shiffy it was.

A flurry of Mazel Tovs later, the new Shiffy sat down to join her family at the seudah.

“Why did you choose this name?” Libby Steinfeld asked. They were all curious but Libby was the first to gather the courage to ask.

“It’s a nice name, no?”

“Gorgeous!” “Cute!” “Very nice!”

The girls called out.

“So you want to know why?”

“Please, tell us.”

“Shiffy was my counselor in camp, back in Pinsk. She was from America and came to be a counselor when I was in 7th Grade. Shiffy was so nice, so good to me. She taught me so much about Yiddishkeit. That’s why I chose this name!”

•••

“What a story, Goldy. I would never have dreamed! So Shiffy is named after a live person. How fascinating!”

“That’s not the end of it, Chavie. Years later, my aunt, Shiffy, wanted to get in touch with her former counselor, the one she idolized. But how on earth would she track down a Shiffy who had been a counselor in Pinsk in 1995? After many, many phone calls and lots of research, she finally pinned that special Shiffy, the selfless girl who was mekarev her over twenty years earlier.”

“Did they meet?”

“They did. And it was quite an interesting reunion. Let me describe it to you.”

Shiffy (formerly Natasha) looked in the mirror once more. Her synthetic sheitel was freshly washed and set, pinned back just the way she liked it. The pink and gray button-down sweater matched perfectly with her A-lined gray skirt. Beige stockings and gray loafers finished that neat, classy look. A dab of blush and a tad of lipstick wouldn’t hurt. She carefully applied her makeup and glanced at her watch. It was 3:20. Counselor Shiffy said she would be here at 3:30. Would she bring ice cream again?

At 3:30, the bell rang. Shiffy flung

the door open to welcome the woman who had deeply impacted her life. If she was shocked for a second, she tried not to show it.

“Come in, come in, Shiffy. Sit down on the couch. Rivky, can you bring in the cookies? Mommy’s counselor, Shiffy, the one I told you about, is here!”

Four-year-old Rivky scampered to the kitchen table and brought in the freshly baked brownies. Curiously, she stared at this larger-than-life personality and then snuggled into her mother’s lap.

“So you never went back to camp after that summer? Then you moved to Monsey? To the Steinfelds? And you went to a frum high school? Wow!”

“Yes, I was only 17 at the time. I got married at 24 and moved to Israel and then Flatbush. I have five children ka”h. Speech therapy, that’s what I do.”

After an hour of pleasant chit-chat, it was time for Counselor Shiffy to go. She blew a kiss at Natasha/ Shiffy’s children and dabbed her eyes. Would she ever imagine that a bit of warmth could go so far?

Natasha/Shiffy waited until Counselor Shiffy’s car was out of sight before plopping down on the couch. Images of her as a child, wearing short-sleeved T-shirts and mini skirts, and Shiffy, the religious, all-knowing adult, mixed with the memories of the day. The current Counselor Shiffy wore a long, flowing dark wig. Her dress was modern and chic, her makeup a bit overdone. By contrast, Natasha/ Shiffy appeared to be frummer than her former counselor. But it was the fire of her warmth, the flames of Ahavas Yisroel, that had forged a deep connection between the two of them, and between her and the Torah. •
