Recap: Casey admits to Mr. Kleinberg that he, too, is Jewish after Mr. Kleinberg tells him that he’s not eating for kashrus reasons. Casey asks Mr. Kleinberg where they are, as he’s been transferred to this jail away from his gang of friends. Then, Mr. Kleinberg is called out of the cell to the pay phones, where he speaks to his wife on the phone.

Chayala tells her mother she’s leaving to work on her class president job, in the middle of bedtime. While Mrs. Gordon is trying to put her kids on pajamas and help them with their homework, she gets a phone call from a student’s tutor who won’t allow her to get off the phone. Mrs. Gordon wonders if her student’s need should be coming before her daughter’s.

CHAPTER 32

Pessy had changed into her comfy clothes after teaching, and was hunched over the desk in her room trying to put together her plan book for the coming week.

Since she’d started going to Mrs. Shapiro, she dreaded preparing a lot less than she used to. But it still took all of her focus and stretched her brain to come up with solid lesson outlines that would impress her principal, Mrs. Gordon, for a full week.

She leaned back in her chair and stretched. Then she stretched again and let her arms fall limply to her sides.

Pushing back her chair, she decided it was time for a break.

She scrolled through her missed calls on her phone as she made her way downstairs, seeing that her friend Chavala had called.

"Hi, Chavala, how are you?” she said as she entered the kitchen where her mother was bagging the oatmeal cookies she’d baked earlier that day.

“Yeah, obviously I was in middle of preparing. Do you know something else that I’m ever busy with?” Pessy giggled. “That’s totally the definition of a first-year teacher: Someone you can’t talk to without hearing the word preparing in the first five minutes of the conversation.”

Mrs. Cooper smiled at her daughter’s depiction. It was nice that Pessy was able to joke about her job, that it was no longer as stressful as it had been in the beginning and that she had a lighter attitude about it now.

She hoped that Pessy would stick around the kitchen for another few minutes so she could get the rest of the updates on her daughter’s life being shared on the phone.

“One sec, Chavala,” Pessy said, and covered the mouthpiece of the phone. “Ma, these look heaven, can I have some?”

“Sure,” her mother nodded.

“No, I’m not going to Mrs. Shapiro today,” Pessy said into the phone as she took a handful of fresh cookies and waved thanks to her mother. “Yeah, I usually go on Wednesdays, but she wasn’t available this week. It’s fine, I basically know what she would tell me already. I have the system figured out, you know what I mean?”

Listening in, Mrs. Cooper wondered if Pessy even remembered that it had been thanks to her mother’s intervention that Mrs. Shapiro had come into the picture.

Probably not.

That was okay, Mrs. Cooper reflected. Seeing her daughter so happy was the only reason she’d worked to set her daughter up with a teaching mentor. And it had worked. That was all she needed.

“Yeah, I need to prepare now because I’m having PTA on Sunday,” Pessy continued chattering as she made

her way up the steps with her cookie stash in hand. “And I need to prepare my comments for each student’s mother also.”

Her words wafted down towards her mother, who felt a twinge of pride when she heard Pessy discussing PTA. Mrs. Cooper thought about her little girl who was playing teacher, meeting her students’ mothers and confidently sharing reports on each student.

It was a real milestone. Mrs. Cooper figured she could relish it even if Pessy hadn’t bothered telling her about it.

What was the point of all her fancy furnishings when she had no friends to show off to or enjoy it with?

Because since her father’s arrest, none of her so-called friends wanted anything to do with her. Zlaty was still loyal, but that was a small comfort. Bruchi couldn’t be the class queen with only Zlaty under her spell.

Depressed, Bruchi shuffled out of her room and headed for the stairs. She hadn’t eaten anything since she came home, and her hunger pangs were starting to make themselves felt.

Not that there was likely to be supper waiting for her. With her mother out all day meeting with her father’s lawyers, Bruchi had come home to an empty, dark and still house. Except for the security guard that Shachne had hired who sat outside all day now, Bruchi was on her own.

She searched through the cabinets, which needed to be restocked, and settled on a package of Oreos. Oreos for supper, and some iced tea to wash it down. She didn’t have much of an appetite anyway.

her cookies, she heard the front door open. Bruchi felt a twinge of panic, and jumped up from her chair.

Then she heard the familiar sounds of her mother talking on the phone.

“Yes, I think that it’s a good idea to mention. Bruchi is only 13, of course she needs her father home, don’t you think it makes sense to say that?”

Why was her mother talking about her?

By the time her mother reached the kitchen, she’d finished the phone call. Bruchi burst out, “Ma, what’s going on?”

“Oh, Bruchi!” her mother placed a hand on her heart. “You scared me!”

“You know I’m always home now,” Bruchi said belligerently. “Why were you talking about me, anyway?”

Mrs. Kleinberg sat down heavily on a kitchen chair.

“Well, today the lawyers said it might be a good idea to bring up how many people rely on Tatty, like Bubby, and like his kids, so the judge has rachmanus and gives Tatty bail. I was just telling Uncle Shachne about it.”

“Now you’re turning me into a nebach case officially?” Bruchi yelled.

Mrs. Kleinberg looked shocked.

“Tell Tatty to stay in jail! I don’t want him to come home! He ruined my life! Now all my friends think that I’m a nebach case, and you want to tell the judge that poor Bruchi needs her father so badly, so please, please, please let him out! No! I don’t want you to do that! Rather Tatty should stay in jail, okay!”

Mrs. Kleinberg’s mouth opened, then closed.

“I don’t even care what happens,” Bruchi muttered quietly, collapsing back into her chair.

“Bruchi! How can you talk like that?” Mrs. Kleinberg’s words screeched. “You don’t care about your own father? You don’t want Tatty to come out of jail? Shame on you! I’ve never heard such words in my life!”

Bruchi looked down at her Oreos to hide the tears in her eyes.

Just then, the front door opened, and Perry called, “I’m home!”

“I hope you didn’t mean anything you just said, Bracha Kleinberg,” her mother said in a low voice.

“Mommy, did you get to speak to Tatty today?” Perry asked breathlessly as she walked into the kitchen.

“I did, actually,” Mrs. Kleinberg admitted. Perry was completely oblivious to the harsh words that had just filled the kitchen, her eager face and words dispelling

some of the cloud hanging over the kitchen.

“What did Tatty say?!”

“Tatty asked if everyone was okay, and I said that you were. I told him that you’re very worried about him, and Tatty said he’s okay, the other person in his cell is even Jewish.”

Perry listened raptly to every word her mother uttered.

“Do you think that Tatty is going to get to come home soon?” she asked, her eyes wide and innocent.

“We’re working on it,” her mother said impatiently.

The kitchen was quiet for a moment. Mrs. Kleinberg’s gaze landed on the Oreos in front of Bruchi once again.

“Don’t eat Oreos for supper,” she said. “I’ll order something.”

Takeout was her default anytime that she couldn’t cook supper. Ignoring the fact that the credit card Shachne had given her had an upper credit limit, she called the café on their corner and ordered a lavish supper.

Perry looked on as her mother described exactly what she wanted, down to the sauces on the grilled salmon. Apparently, her mother wanted to pretend that life was going back to normal, when it was anything but.

“Are you still going to have a lot of meetings with the lawyers?” Perry asked her mother.

Mrs. Kleinberg sighed. “I’m not sure. I think I’m going to ask Shachne or Yossi to take over. It’s not for me, being busy with all this. I’m sure Tatty wouldn’t want me to work so hard.”

“Who cares what Tatty wants?” Bruchi muttered.

“Bruchi!” Perry uttered, horrified at her sister’s irreverence. She’d missed her sister’s entire previous speech, and she wasn’t prepared for that kind of comment.

Now the tears were plainly evident in Bruchi’s eyes, although she fiercely tried to blink them away.

“What?” Bruchi asked. “Tatty can’t help you anymore, you know. He’s in jail.” Bruchi defiantly said the words aloud, the words they tried not to say for fear of giving it more strength.

“You still can’t talk like that,” Perry said in her soft voice, a pained expression on her face.

“Says who?” Bruchi lifted her chin. “You’re the world’s biggest tzadeikes, but I’m not. Do you know that nobody wanted to talk to me in school today? Everyone was staring at me and talking about me behind my back. I have a miserable life, okay? And it’s all Tatty’s fault!” • TO BE CONTINUED

SHORTCUT MEZONOS FOCACCIA

Everyone loves focaccia but nobody has patience to wait overnight for it to rise. Well, here’s an easy shortcut Mezonos focaccia that comes out tall and fluffy, making it perfect for focaccia breadsticks or sandwiches.

Ingredients

1 packet Fleischmann’s RapidRise Instant Yeast

1 tablespoon sugar

¾ cup hot water

¾ cup apple juice

3-1/4 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

Flaky salt

Freshly cracked black pepper

black/green olives

Chopped herbs of choice (parsley, dill, rosemary, etc)

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, combine the yeast, water, apple juice, and sugar and let sit for 1-2 minutes (until it foams & gets creamy).

2. Add the flour and salt and knead until a dough forms.

3. Line a 9x13 pan with parchment paper and pour 2-3 tablespoons olive oil into the bottom of the pan. Transfer the dough to the pan and spread the dough until it reaches the corners.

4. Cover the pan with a towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.

5. Using your lightly oiled finger, gently poke holes about every inch in the dough going nearly to the bottom of the dough. Drizzle with about 2-3 tablespoons olive oil; and sprinkle with salt, black pepper, olives and herbs.

6. Let the dough rise, uncovered, an additional 15 minutes while the oven preheats to 375°.

BUILD YOUR BAR:

Layer your table with different heights for visual interest and easier access. Use vases and bowls as pedestals for your platters and charger plates. Intersperse greens and fresh elements to create a cohesive feel along the table.Feel free to use a blend of different cups and plates- whatever you have on hand.

SET YOUR TABLE:

Pair classic white linens, bright floral prints, and natural elements (greens, twig napkin rings, fresh lemons) to evoke a fine yet fresh summer feel.

7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. You can return to the oven at 450° for 2-3 minutes if you prefer a darker crust. Cool slightly. Cut into squares or strips and serve. If hosting outside, display your food in covered trays.

SILKY SMOOTH CHUMMUS

Perfection, every time. Try it- love it- repeat.

Ingredients:

2 cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained

4 tablespoons tahini paste

4 tablespoons olive oil

2 lemons, juiced (½ cup lemon juice)

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

4 cloves fresh garlic

4 tablespoons water or 4-5 ice cubes

Directions:

1. Place all the ingredients in a high speed blender and blend for about 4-5 minutes until smooth.

CRUNCHY SALAD CUPS WITH TANGY MAPLE DRESSING

The best salads don’t require any measurements. You just throw them together on a whim, making sure to include a good balance of sweet and salty, creamy and crunchy.

This outstanding layered salad requires almost no prep (besides the dressing, which you can make an advance), and is perfect to throw together when you’re strapped on time but want to whip up something gourmet and delicious.

Ingredients:

TANGY MAPLE DRESSING:

½ shallot

1 clove garlic, minced

4 teaspoons Dijon mustard

6 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

4 tablespoons maple syrup

⅔ cup Tuscanini Extra Virgin Olive Oil

¾ teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

SALAD

Spring Mix or Romaine Lettuce

Purple onion, thinly sliced

Roasted Chestnuts, halved or whole

Toasted Walnuts, optional

Heaven & Earth Veggie Croutons

Crumbled Feta Cheese

Directions:

1. Tangy Maple Dressing: In a bowl or container, combine all the dressing ingredients and blend with an immersion blender until smooth.

2. Salad: In a large serving platter or in individual cups, layer the lettuce, purple onion, chestnuts, walnuts (optional), veggie croutons, and crumbled feta cheese. Drizzle with dressing and Enjoy!

HUNGARIAN CHEESE DIP

An old-world classic brought to the modern table.

Ingredients:

7 oz farmer cheese

½ container of 8 oz sour cream

1 heaping tablespoon mayonnaise

2 cloves crushed garlic

¾ teaspoon paprika

Pinch of smoked paprika

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Chopped parsley (fresh or dried)

Chopped dill (fresh or dried)

Directions:

1. In a small bowl, add in all ingredients and stir until combined. Garnish with a sprinkle of paprika before serving.

VEGGIE & CHEESE CUPS

Components:

Red, orange & yellow pepper, sliced into matchsticks

English Cucumbers, sliced into matchsticks

Hungarian Cheese Dip- see recipe

Assembly:

1. Place 2 tablespoons of the cheese dip on the bottom of each cup.

2. Add the pepper and cucumber sticks. Serve.

TROPICAL CREAMY MANGO SMOOTHIE

When you’re bored of strawberry, try this. It’s refreshing, creamy, and so delicious.

Yield: 4-5 Smoothie Cups

Ingredients:

2 cups vanilla ice cream

2 cups golden flow mango smoothie

1 ripe mango, peeled and cubed

Juice of 1 lemon (about 2-3 tablespoons)

Coconut flakes, for garnish

Fresh mango cubes, for garnish

Directions:

1. In a large container or pitcher, combine the vanilla ice cream, smoothie drink, mango cubes, and lemon juice. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth.

2. Pour into cups and garnish with coconut flakes and mango cubes. Add a straw and enjoy!

Letters etched into the ground, in front of the preschool door: Mazel tov to our teacher Naomi on your wedding!

“They will sing mazel tov in kindergarten for me today, too!”

Dror skipped over to her as she approached the building, accompanied by all the little girls with flowers in their hands.

“Right you let them sing also for me and not only for you?”

“Of course, because of your new baby!” Naomi smiled at him. A new baby sister had been born to Dror’s family nearly a week earlier, and he was extremely excited.

“I saw her two days ago, and she’s this tiny, like this.” He demonstrated. “And do you know why they will sing mazel tov for me?”

“Of course, because you have a new baby sister,” Naomi answered patiently.

“Not only because of that, but also because she already has a name! Do you know that my father went yesterday to shul, and they read in the Torah there, and they said her name? Her name is Ch…Cherut.” He struggled with the first consonant.

“That’s a very special name,” Naomi said, and glanced cautiously behind her. Who was around? Only Katy and the children. Because it looked like those in the Elkovitz home were yearning for freedom—that much was clear. But freedom from what?

“My father and mother said it’s Hebrew for ‘freedom.’”

“That’s right,” she whispered.

“It’s like me,” he said obliquely. “My name is also like that.”

“Do you want freedom, vacation from kindergarten?” Katy interjected with a laugh. “So go home, to your mother!”

“Maybe I’ll go visit your mother after work,” Naomi said.

“Yay! She’ll be so happy!” the boy promised. But his teacher wasn’t all that sure. Suzy Elkovitz was making an effort to keep a distance from her. Before the class was officially divided, it was natural. But now, why shouldn’t she become friendly with someone from the Orthodox group?

Whatever the case was, Suzy and her husband sure chose interesting names for their children.

The excited, flower-carrying entourage walked into the building, and Babbe Sara Liba peeked out of the kitchen with a smile. “I also get a mazel tov!” Dror called to her, as he skipped along and hummed to himself. Babbe smiled at him and waved in greeting, but her eyes clouded over for a moment, and Naomi noticed.

It wasn’t her job to worry about lunch, but she could not help herself, and came into the kitchen during a quiet moment. “Babbe, how are you?”

“Baruch Hashem, I’m zocheh to see more grandchildren building Jewish homes.” Babbe didn’t try to hide her tears. “Is there anything more beautiful than that?”

“Give her the oatmeal cookies, Sara Liba,” her friend Tziporah urged her. “Let her not think that just because she’s gone and gotten married, she can’t be pampered by her grandmother anymore! Especially as she has no other grandmother.” She turned to Naomi. “Do you remember Babbe Shifra, Naomi? Your father’s mother?”

“No, unfortunately. She passed away before my parents got married, and her husband, Zeide Binyamin, was niftar a few days before my brother Binyamin was born.”

“Yes, yes, that’s right. Oy, Shifra, what a tzaddeikes she was… Well, let’s not speak to a kallah about sad things. When you meet my Elka’le, Naomi, tell her that I miss her.” She turned back to the vegetables in front of her.

Naomi’s grandmother looked at her granddaughter. “How do you feel, Naomi?”

“Baruch Hashem, wonderful. Babbe…?”

“Yes, meidele?”

“What’s going on with the Elkovitz family?”

“With the baby? Hashem yerachem, she’s very weak.”

“Do you think that—”

“We don’t think anything.” Babbe’s voice was firm. “It’s what Hashem thinks that is important.”

“So should I go visit Mrs. Elkovitz after school?”

“Right now I wouldn’t. Anyway, your priority right now, after you get home from work, is to cook a good supper for your husband, you hear?” Babbe wagged her finger.

Naomi giggled. “Of course.”

Only tefillos will help.”

“I don’t think Dror knows anything about the baby being unwell,” Naomi said as she fiddled with her new kerchief. “If I say some Tehillim with the children, I shouldn’t say who it is for, right?”

“No, it’s better that you don’t,” her grandmother replied. “Because he likely doesn’t know… Daven with the children, for sure.”

It was a good thing Babbe had prepared her, because Aryeh’s face really did look exhausted when he came into their tiny hut that had been allocated to them for starters. “Hi,” he said, trying to smile. Without another word, he turned and collapsed onto the chair near the wall.

Because it looked like those in the Elkovitz home were yearning for freedom— that much was clear.

“Aryeh is not Binyamin, Naomi,” Babbe whispered. “Binyamin also works very hard, but his work is much…cleaner. More… elegant. Aryeh works in a very hard, black job that requires a lot of energy—physical and mental. He needs to be taken care of so that he can feel good. I’m sure you’ll do that, right?”

“She will do it very well,” Tziporah chimed in as she cut up some radishes and tossed them into the big pot. “That’s what grandmothers are for, to teach their granddaughters what a good wife is all about! We weren’t zocheh to that, Sara Liba, huh?”

Her friend nodded, but her eyes were still locked with Naomi’s. “And a kallah mustn’t have sad thoughts,” she added quietly.

“You just got married two days ago, Naomi. And Baby Elkovitz won’t be helped by sadness or your worries about the future.

“Hi,” Naomi returned, as she quickly turned off the gas knob. The soup was already boiling; there was no reason to keep the flame on until it spilled over.

“How was your day?” he asked, with closed eyes.

“Baruch Hashem, almost regular.” She wouldn’t speak about the weak baby now. She took one of the bowls to ladle some soup into it, and then noticed his eyes were closed. “Do you want to eat?” she asked. “It’s really good, thick soup, with lots of vegetables. Can I serve you some?”

“Maybe soon. I don’t feel so good… You eat.” He could barely move his lips. And then he fell asleep.

Is this what Babbe had meant?

No, she would not be selfish now and think about her own misery when her husband felt so awful. Naomi filled a bowl for herself and ate their first supper in their home as a married couple. Last night, they’d gone to her mother for supper. They had received special permission, and a few people had come in at the end of the meal and joined them for sheva brachos, similar to at the wedding.

And today, she was already eating alone.

Then two things happened at once: Aryeh moaned slightly, and there was a knock at the door.

Naomi got up to open the door. There stood her aunt/motherin-law, holding a plate covered with a cloth napkin. “Delicious nut cake for your first supper at home!” she announced and walked in. “Hey, Aryeh? Is everything alright?”

“He doesn’t feel so good,” Naomi replied quietly.

Chani’s forehead creased.

“It’s a good thing the wedding wasn’t at the manor house,” she said suddenly. “Otherwise I’d be afraid that it was from something that happened there!”

“Can I have a drink of water?” Aryeh asked suddenly. Naomi

hurried to get a cup, but by the time the slow flow of the faucet filled it up, Aryeh had fallen asleep again, his head slumped on the table.

“It looks to me like he caught it from Wechselman, the one who works next to him,” Chani said, gazing worriedly at her son. “I heard this morning that he has pneumonia, and I know that lately the two of them have been working most hours together, very close to each other.”

Pneumonia! Naomi shuddered. “Now? In this season?”

“I also heard about Wechselman.” Aryeh’s weak voice surprised them both. “He’s been sick with fever for a week already. I…I hope that if it’s that, I’ll get better faster than him…”

“Amen,” his wife and mother said together.

“Do you want some of the soup that Naomi made?” his mother asked him. “It smells delicious, and soup is a great remedy for all kinds of illnesses.”

“I can’t right now,” he said weakly. “Maybe in the morning…”

“If you don’t bring us some serious doses of antibiotics, we can say goodbye to the business and close it all up,”

Katarina Wangel declared to her husband, Herr Josef Wangel. “What more do we have to wait for until you and your friends in Vienna realize that there’s a pneumonia outbreak here, or something else contagious? We’ve counted seven patients in three weeks. That’s a lot!”

“Are they all still alive?” he asked apathetically.

“Yes, but it’s only a matter of time! Sherer’s new granddaughter is in serious condition; Erno Batarah’s older son; the son of Chani, our cook…”

He was busy peeling his apple. “Don’t we have something in the storage rooms?”

“There was one dose there. We gave it to Chani’s son. Naomi Schvirtz’s husband.”

“Why not to Leo’s granddaughter?”

“She’s a baby—she needs intravenous!”

“I’ll try to get more,” he said icily. He suddenly raised his voice. “You know it’s not simple to get medications without prescriptions. It’s enough that we feed false records to the Austrian labor ministry, and we falsify the income and expenses for income tax purposes. Don’t demand now that I fall into the talons of the health ministry!”

“Hans helps you. Just pick up the phone, and he’ll arrange for a doctor to sign all the prescriptions that you need.”

“Hans mostly talks,” he said bitterly. “You know that it’s not so simple. Do you remember how much trouble I got into then, with the warfarin for Rabbiner Schwartzbrod?”

Before delving into the strategies, let's touch upon the fundamental principle of weight loss: the calorie deficit. Put simply, shedding pounds comes down to burning more calories than you consume. It's basic math, but it's crucial. Imagine your body as a bank account, where calories are the currency. To lose weight, you need to spend more calories than you deposit. This means creating a calorie deficit, ideally through a combination of diet and exercise. This this doesn't entail extreme measures or deprivation. It's about making sustainable lifestyle changes that you can stick with for the long haul.

1. Mindful Eating: Start by evaluating your current eating habits. Are you mindlessly snacking throughout the day? Do you often eat out of boredom or stress? I work with plenty of women that are slim to begin with and they just want to lose 5-10 pounds. This is their personal recipe for success. Cut out the nibbles, even if they are healthy. Every single nibble adds up, putting you in a calorie overhaul and not a deficit. A chocolate covered rice cake may seem healthy, but in fact, one rice cake has a teaspoon of sugar on it and almost a teaspoon of oil in it! These calories accumulate!

Example: Instead of mindlessly munching on chips when your afternoon is stressful, opt for a bowl of crunchy veggies. Not only will you satisfy your craving for something savory, but you'll also nourish your body with vitamins and fiber.

2. Portion Control: It's not just what you eat, but how much you eat that matters. Portion sizes in today's

world have ballooned, leading to excess calorie consumption without even realizing it. Learning to gauge appropriate portion sizes can make a significant difference in your calorie intake.

Example: When dishing out your meals, visualize portion sizes using everyday objects. For instance, a serving of meat should be about the size of your whole palm, while a cup of pasta is roughly the size of a tennis ball. This simple trick can help you keep your portions in check without the need for complicated measurements.

3. Move More, Sit Less: While diet plays a significant role in weight loss, physical activity is equally important for overall health and well-being. Aim to incorporate more movement into your daily routine, whether it's taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going for a brisk walk during your lunch break.

Example: Instead of sitting and reading during downtime, why not take a leisurely stroll around your neighborhood? Not only will you burn extra calories, but you'll also clear your mind and boost your mood in the process.

4. Consistency over Intensity: Remember, slow and steady wins the race when it comes to weight loss. Crash diets and extreme workout regimens may yield rapid results initially, but they're rarely sustainable in the long term. Focus on making gradual, sustainable changes that you can maintain beyond the six-week mark.

Consistency is key, so find activities that you look forward to and incorporate them into your weekly routine. Work our smarter. Not harder.

SHE MOVED MOUNTAINS — A TRIBUTE TO HINDY GINSBERG

“You have been assigned this mountain to show others it can be moved.”

Hindy Ginsberg moved mountains.

Ever since that special day, when Hindy Ginsberg entered our lives, my family felt this magnetic pull toward her holy and very precious neshamah.

Five years ago, we received a call regarding a family from England who was staying at John Hopkins Medical Center here in Baltimore, and we were asked, “Would you mind stopping by?” I heard that their teenage daughter was not well, and I wasn’t sure whether or not to bring along my own daughter, a few years older. The individual on the other line was also uncertain. In the end, I brought her; it was a wise decision. They would connect deeply.

Not wanting to come empty-handed, we chose a gift.

A writing pad. And a pen. It should have been a klaf. And a quill.

For Hindy was heilig. And her life, her writings, depicting her unique journey, are a testament to that. It’s her Sefer Torah. Our Sefer Torah.

Our initial meeting took place on Erev Shavuos. Knowing that she would not be able to be in shul for the Aseres HaDibros, I assured Hindy that I would have her in mind.

We made up a time. 10:15. She would stand at her bedside. And I would stand at the bimah with the Torah. We would both be standing at Har Sinai. For at Har Sinai, everyone found their refuah. And the same, we hoped, would happen now. It became our minhag.

Every Shavuos. For five years. From one city to the next, Hindy moved the mountain. Wherever she went, she brought it with her.

The long-lasting illness she endured proved to be an over-matched opponent for her unbreakable faith.

Time and time again, she was summoned for medical care, for treatment. Time and time again, she responded, “Hineini.”

“Hineini.” “Hineini.”

And nuch ah muhl, “Hineini.”

Hindy had her own special way of expressing her feelings, her challenges, her acceptance, her emunah, her shirah.

Providentially, she was named Hinda, connoting (in Lashon Hakodesh/Yiddish), “Hinei, da— Behold, here I am.”

Yes, she was.

Always ready.

What riveting, awe-inspiring echoes of the Imahos from an English teen. But that was Hindy.

As her illness progressed, her neshamah glowed ever brighter. Each round of chemo and radiation brought with it more brilliance, more radiance, more light.

Everyone clamored to be near her. To bask in her presence. To perceive her glowing smile. Even in her weakest state, Hindy was the pillar, the rock, and the light to whom everyone turned.

Five years have passed since our first meeting. But the Ginsbergs proved one can smile even in the darkness.

Who can imagine such a thing? Hindy could. Indeed, she did.

She moved mountains. For she was an eibige licht. And her brilliant neshamah will shine forever.

With the war raging on multiple fronts in Eretz Yisrael, the Kever of the holy Tanna Rabi Shimon Bar Yochai in Meron is completely closed off from the public on his Yahrtzeit - Lag B’Omer. What is usually a bustling city of festivities, music and tefillah, will this year be a deserted town except for the select few who have gained special access to enter during these unprecedented times. Yad L’Achim’s messengers are amongst the select few granted access this year.

A little background:

A troubling under-the-radar reality exists in Eretz Yisrael. There are thousands of Jewish women and children that are currently trapped in Arab Villages, and in hostile environments. Yad L’Achim is dedicated to rescuing them, to give them the opportunity to live as free Jews. The work we do, day in and day out, is literally Pidyon Shvuyim in the 21st century.

Once rescued, many of these women go on to establish beautiful Jewish homes. The sweet sounds of Torah learning emanating from their children is music to Hashem’s ears. As a zechus for all of these women to find their zivug, Yad L’Achim sends Talmidei Chachamim on their behalf, to daven at the Kever of Reb Shimon Bar Yochai on Lag B’Omer.

But how has this become a global opportunity for all of Klal Yisrael, and for free?

On Lag Ba’omer we have the custom to light bonfires. This is because the Torah and especially the secrets within it are compared to fire. Just as Rashbi revealed the secrets of Torah to all of us, we too can share with someone a part of Torah that they don’t know yet.

You know how to play piano. You’ve learned how to read the notes and after practicing for many hours, days, weeks, and months, you have mastered three of your favorite songs. There is nothing like the feeling of your fingers running across the keyboard, creating the harmonious sounds of music.Your good friend Yossi wishes he could play too. You think to yourself, “There’s a reason Hashem gave me this skill. Aside from using my talent to play music, maybe I can also teach it to Yossi.” One day after school, Yossi comes over for his first lesson, given by you. You can’t teach him everything in one day, but you start by showing him the right way to hold his fingers on the keyboard. One piece of information at a time, he can start to learn how to play.

How can you be like Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who revealed the secrets of Torah?

Rashbi wrote the Zohar, a book that contains the secrets of the Torah, and revealed it to the world. Because of him, all Jews can now access the deepest parts of the Torah, strengthening their connection with Hashem. We honor this by lighting bonfires on Lag Ba’omer, his Hilula – the day he passed away – since the secrets of Torah are represented by fire. Although we are not on the level of Rashbi, we can nevertheless take a lesson from his life. Just as Rashbi revealed and taught the deepest layers of Torah, you too can teach a part of Torah you know to someone who may not yet know. There is a well-known teaching, “If you know Alef, teach Alef.” Even if you only know one Alef Bais letter, one Parsha, or one explanation within Torah, you can share it with someone else who doesn’t yet know it.

Bonfire of Knowledge Painting PARSHA

Begin by sponging yellow paint over most of the canvas.

Cut out the printed template of a black open book. (Or draw the shape of an open Sefer on a black paper, and cut out the outline.)

Using a medium paintbrush, paint the Aleph-Bais Stampers with black paint. Randomly stamp the Aleph-Bais around the canvas.

Add some orange paint dots around the canvas with a sponge. Blend the two shades by dabbing until yellow and orange mesh together.

Repeat step 2 with red paint. Make sure your whole canvas is fully painted and blended with yellow, orange, and red paint to create the look of a bonfire.

Glue your book to the bottom of your canvas. Take 3 Aleph-Bais cookie cutters and dip them into black paint. Then, stamp them around the canvas.

Your “Bonfire of Knowledge” Painting is complete. Have a Happy Lag Ba’omer
