RECAP OF CHAPTER 83: Afraid that he will get the Kushes in trouble if Bernard finds him there, Binyamin leaves their home. He hides out on the roof of the manor house, intent on getting to the third floor as soon as the Wangels go to sleep. At 3:30 in the morning, Eva knocks on the Wangels’ door. Her father is having a heart attack, and she begs the Wangels to let Dr. Katzburg use their defibrillator on him. The Wangels make her wait a long time, and by the time she returns home with it, it’s too late.
From a letter that Leo Sherer z”l wrote, published in the Nogot Heyet (Fortified Place), Issue number 10, Year 1978:
From my sickbed, I wish to send my thanks to all those who have sent me letters with warm wishes for a recovery. I will also utilize this distinguished platform to thank Dr. Baruch Grodotzky for his dedicated treatment to save my eye, and to his daughter and assistant, Dr. Annie Katzburg. And of course, to our compassionate benefactors, Katarina and Josef Wangel, who provided the right equipment for my treatment, and in general, over the years, have made sure to provide materials and updated medical information so that our doctors can keep learning and advancing, so that we can continue living here in good health and tranquility. From the incident that happened to me, I turn to you with a simple request: Be careful about sharp, protruding branches, because such a distressing accident can happen to anyone
who is not careful enough.
And another request: Even when I am not around, try to keep up your work productivity, for the sake of the honesty, fairness, and gratitude that we owe to the supervisors here. Wishing you good health and peace always, Leo Sherer
Sol, the nephew who stood with his head bowed near the bier, folded the yellowing paper and raised his tear-filled eyes. “I don’t think there could be a better will than this letter, written sixteen years ago, after that accident. Our beloved Leo, may his memory be blessed, wrote with great effort, with one eye bandaged, his instructions to the residents of this place. And if I may note, it is not only to the Wangel family that we owe gratitude, but also to him, the man who headed this blessed factory for some fifty years.”
He took a handkerchief out of his pocket. “And perhaps,
indeed, it is worthwhile to look at the two requests that he wrote here as his final wishes: to continue working with as much dedication as possible, for the sake of fairness and honesty, and yes,”—his eyes flitted over the large crowd—“to be careful about sharp and protruding branches. And by that, I mean the lesson that is clear to us all: Don’t let people with delusional ideas sow discord and ruin all that our Leo has built here for decades.”
He lowered his eyes to the mittah. “Dear Leo, we loved you so much. We are anguished that we have to part from you, and we promise that we will do everything to follow in your ways.”
“Speak only for yourself,” Yidel Klein whispered, standing next to his Aryeh. “It looks like indeed, he is planning to do everything to follow in his uncle’s path—and to inherit his position.”
“Sol?” Mottel Kush turned to him. “But Leo has sons-in-law!”
“David Elkovitz won’t run this place,” Yidel muttered dismissively. “The Reform people won’t let him. And neither will the Wangels, because he…well, it’s clear to them also that he is not a copy of his father-in-law. And Irwin? Nu, really, he knows nothing about furs.”
“And how much did Leo know, already?” Elimelech Kush muttered. “He mostly talked, and left the hard work for others. Like your nephew Binyamin, for example.”
“Come on, let’s not take from Leo what he did have,” Yidel whispered back. “His knowledge in the field was tremendous. The fact that others had far better hands than him is not his fault.”
“What’s strange,” David Elkovitz said, suddenly appearing from behind them, “is that Sol took from this letter only what he considers a ‘will,’ and he’s doing what he wants with it. How is he ignoring the words of thanks for the medical devices that Wangel provided to treat my father-in-law’s injured eye, without mentioning their behavior last night—which led directly to his death?” He fell silent as Irwin, the oldest son-inlaw, stood near the mittah and—somewhat clumsily—read the words of Kaddish from a paper.
“Just one more thing,” Elkovitz whispered, as Sol once again imperiously took his place right opposite the bier. “I have no idea what will be now with the Wangels, and what’s with Binyamin. But it should be clear to people that if they put Sol
on top of us, he will be far less gentle than my father-in-law. And to prove his absolute loyalty, he might also actively report anyone who he considers to be transgressing the laws of this place. Excuse me if it’s lashon hara, but based on what I have learned, we are allowed to be cautious and concerned, aren’t we? So please, be concerned.” And without another word, he returned to his place in the first rows, with the members of the mourning family. Eva was weeping into her hands, and Suzy, her sister, was leaning on her shoulder.
Sol cleared his throat and suggested that they sing Leo’s old song. He began first, and many joined in, singing the familiar words: In the hard and bitter world, in a dreadful world—I found myself a fortified place, I found a place…
They had no reason to fear that any of the Nazis here would get angry at the words “dreadful world,” and it wasn’t only because this song complimented the Wangels for the fortified and protected hiding place that they provided for the Jews. The reason was much simpler: Not one of the Wangels had come to escort the devoted, longtime work supervisor on his final journey. ***
Even if he had planned to slip into the top floor during the night, the voices from the courtyard below made it clear to Binyamin that it would not be wise. Something had happened in the quiet camp, and he had no way to know if it was something that would cause the Wangels to come up to the third floor in the middle of the night.
He would wait one more day, and then climb down the following night.
Only when morning came was he able to discern from the distant voices that someone had passed away, and based on the loud exchanges between Bernard and his sister, which came through one of the open windows of the manor house, he also realized who that person was.
Leo Sherer!
A muted sense of sadness spread through Binyamin. In recent years, he and Leo had not really gotten along, and Leo had sometimes acted in an irritating and unfair way, especially when he served as the spokesman for the Reform group in their disputes.
But all in all…he did have some feeling for tradition, and respect for Rabbi Schwartzbrod. He was the one who had discovered Binyamin’s talent and had brought him to the place where he was today.
Today… Binyamin looked around with a bitter smile. This was where he was today, hiding on the rooftop of the manor house. If everything would have continued normally, he would be sitting now in his little corner, sewing peacefully and precisely, one seam after another, to the satisfaction of those in charge.
But who wanted to live this fake life? After learning of the truth beyond the walls of the camp, he could not make peace with this huge lie. He was waiting every day for the liberation to come, b’ezras Hashem.
And Leo—
Leo Sherer wouldn’t be there.
was pained that Leo would never have the chance to see the truth.
Although in the place he was coming to now, the truth was known to all.
***
“Hello, is this Peter Karol?”
“Yes.” The voice was thick and raspy, maybe from years of smoking, or of drinking.
“We…are conducting an interview, an important interview. And we would like to ask you a few questions.”
But primarily he was pained that Leo would never have the chance to see the truth.
Binyamin was surprised to discover how significant a role Leo played in his dreams of liberation: How he would stand openmouthed when he came face to face with the life outside, how perhaps he would shake Binyamin’s hand and admit that he, Binyamin, had been right… Or perhaps he’d double down and blindly insist on staying to work for Wangel until the end of his life? That didn’t seem likely.
Binyamin felt sad, not only because he wanted Leo to agree with him and to admit to the truth—and yes, there was a twinge of a desire for Leo to see that he had been right. But primarily he
“Are you recording me now?” Peter sounded excited.
“No,” Bentzy Hanter replied.
“We’re writing questions and answers, not recording.”
“Ah, for a newspaper… Okay, what do you want to ask me?”
“We are interested in villagers who engage in work outside their villages.”
“So what do you want to ask?”
“Do you have private land, in the village?”
“A very small area,” Peter said carefully.
“What do you for a living?”
“I have a van, and I drive people.”
“Nice. Do you make good money?”
“It’s okay.” He was hesitant to share too many details.
“Who do you service as a driver?”
“Sometimes I bring tourists to our area, but it’s not such an interesting place, so there’s not a
lot of work doing that. I mostly bring supplies from the city, and sometimes I transfer merchandise from our area to there.”
“Which city?”
“Mostly Vienna, and sometimes also to Baden and to Krems.”
“What kind of merchandise do you transport, for example?”
“Food, small electric appliances, clothing, furs.”
“Clothing and furs? From the village to the city, or from the city to the village?”
“Both.” From minute to minute he sounded more distant, but then he continued, “Furs usually go from here to the city.”
“Furs? Who makes furs in your village?”
“Not in our village, in a different place in this area. I’m sure you’ve heard of Wangel.”
“The name rings a bell. Listen, it sounds like very profitable work. Furs is an expensive business.”
“But I hardly do it. Maybe once a year, just about. They have their own van, so they hardly need me. How many furs do they produce already, five a month? And a lot of their work is also done in their factory store in Vienna. But what do I care, as long as I’m registered at the Labor Ministry, so this way I’ll have a pension in six more years. That’s what I’m after.”
A few seconds later, Bentzy put the phone back down. “Five furs a month?” He looked at his father. “Does that make sense to you?”
“They are probably playing with the reports on how much they produce. To the government offices they present themselves as a small, boutique family business, that hardly needs workers except for a few times a year. But in reality, their work is of a much greater scope.”
“And the government offices rely on their declarations without actually looking into things on the ground?”
His father was thoughtful. “Look, either they are very well connected, or they present the factory store in Vienna as their main production site. And maybe both are true. In my view, they export furs abroad in all kinds of ways, without anyone knowing the real amount that is produced in the factory.”
“Or the real number of workers who are enslaved in their factory,” Bentzy finished grimly. “And their identity.”

If there’s one thing I hear from mothers all the time, it’s this:
“I feel so guilty.”
Guilty for losing patience.
Guilty for not spending enough time.
Guilty for not getting it “just right.”
But here’s the truth—guilt is never good for us. It doesn’t make us better mothers. It only drags us down, keeps us stuck, and steals the energy we need for the moments ahead.
Here are five reasons why we need to keep guilt out of our parenting—and what to do instead.
1. Guilt keeps us stuck in the past. When guilt takes over, our minds replay the mistake again and again. We re-live it instead of living the moment we’re in.
Example: You snapped at your daughter before school because she couldn’t find her shoes. All morning, you think, “I can’t believe I yelled at her over shoes.” When she comes home later, instead of greeting her with warmth, you’re still carrying that heavy feeling—so the disconnect happens twice.
Instead: Notice it happened, make a quick repair if needed (“This morning was rough, I’m sorry I snapped”), and then shift your focus back to connecting in the present.
2. Guilt Makes Us Parent from Shame, Not Love. Guilt often turns into shame, where we believe we are bad—not just that we made a mistake. When we’re in shame, we either withdraw or try to “make it up” in ways that don’t serve our child.
Example: You told your teen he couldn’t go to a latenight event. He accused you of being controlling, and you feel guilty for saying no. Later, to ease your guilt, you give him extra privileges that you normally wouldn’t. The problem? He learns that pushing your buttons changes the rules.
Instead: Stand firm in your decision while staying connected: “I know you’re upset, and I understand why. I made this choice because I care about your safety.”
3. Guilt Drains Our Energy. We need emotional stamina for parenting, especially with teens. Guilt acts like a slow leak in our energy tank. The more we replay our mistakes, the less patience, clarity, and compassion we have for the next challenge.
Example: You forgot to sign a school form, and now your child can’t go on the field trip. You feel awful and beat yourself up all day. By the time you get home, you’re so drained from your own mental criticism that you snap over something small, like shoes left in the hallway.
Instead: Acknowledge it (“I made a mistake, and it’s disappointing”), make a plan to avoid it next time,
and protect your energy for the moments that matter now.
4. Guilt Ignores the Truth: We’re Doing the Best We Can. We love to tell ourselves, “I should have done better.” But the truth is, in that moment—with the tools, energy, and understanding we did the best we could. If we could have done better, we would have.
Example: You planned to have a calm talk with your teen about grades, but you ended up reacting to his attitude and raising your voice. It’s easy to think, “I should have stayed calm.” But that night, you were tired, worried, and caught off guard.
Instead: Recognize that you can learn from the moment but stop expecting yourself to have skills you haven’t practiced yet. Growth takes time.
5. Guilt Doesn’t Lead to Growth-Compassion Does. Feeling bad doesn’t make us better. What does? Reflecting, learning, and repairing when needed. Self-compassion opens the door for growth; guilt slams it shut.
Example: After losing your temper, guilt says, “I’m a terrible mother. I can’t believe I did that again.” Compassion says, “I didn’t handle that how I wanted to. Next time, I’m going to try a pause before responding.” Which one is more likely to lead to change?
Instead: Talk to yourself the way you’d talk to your best friend—acknowledging the mistake while believing in your ability to do better next time.
Let’s remember the 3 “R’s”, so that you can move forward without guilt, as follows:
• Repair: apologize if needed and show your child what taking responsibility looks like.
• Reflect: Ask, “What can I learn from this moment?”
• Release: Once you’ve repaired and learned, let it go.
Motherhood is a journey, not a perfection contest. Let’s stop carrying guilt that serves no purpose and start practicing the same compassion we hope our children will give themselves.

QI like using chicken or onion soup mix in some dinner recipes. Is this a problem to use from a health perspective? How about from a dieting perspective? Will it interfere with my weight loss?
AMany people love the convenience and flavor that chicken or onion soup mix brings to their cooking. Whether you’re making roasted vegetables, baked chicken, or a savory kugel, that little packet seems to add just the right kick. But when it comes to health and weight loss, it’s worth asking: Is using soup mix a problem?
Most commercial soup mixes—like onion or chicken flavor—contain a mix of: salt (sodium), dehydrated vegetables, sugar or corn syrup solids, artificial flavors, MSG or yeast extract (in some brands, and thickeners and preservatives.
While the flavor is undeniably good, these mixes are highly processed and sodium-heavy. Just one packet can contain over 800–1,000 mg of sodium, which is about half the recommended daily limit for many people.
From a general health perspective, using soup mix occasionally is not a major issue—especially if the rest of your diet is filled with fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and whole foods. However, relying on soup mixes often can lead to:
• Excess sodium intake, which contributes to high blood pressure in some individuals
• Bloating or water retention, especially for those sensitive to salt
• Artificial additives, which don’t offer any nutritional benefit
From a calorie standpoint, soup mixes are typically low. A full packet might contain 20–40 calories total, which gets distributed across an entire dish. So, in terms of pure weight loss, it likely won’t stop you from losing weight if used sparingly.
That said, the high sodium content can lead to water retention, which might show up on the scale as temporary weight gain. This can be discouraging, even if it's not actual fat gain.
If you enjoy the flavor but want to be mindful, here are some ways to make it work better for your health and goals:
1. Use half the packet – You’ll still get flavor with less sodium and fewer additives.
2. Dilute with fresh ingredients – Mix it with sautéed onions, garlic, herbs, or lemon juice to stretch the flavor naturally.
3. Look for cleaner brands – Some healthconscious brands offer soup mixes with fewer chemicals and less sodium. Read the labels.
4. Make your own mix – You can easily make a DIY version using dried onion, garlic powder, paprika, and bouillon with no added sugar or preservatives.
If you're making an overall effort to eat better, lose weight, or reduce processed foods, this is one area where a few small changes can go a long way. Balance is key!

Stories that make the song play in your head and morph into something greater than the sum of lyrics and melody; an impetus for introspection and growth.
The Western Wall on Friday night
His first time ever there, Strapped into his knapsack
With his long and curly hair. He stood there for a while
Broke out with a smile,
Emotion overwhelming joy with tears.
The men were dancing there
Their hearts so full of love,
They sang such happy tunes
To thank the One Above.
For showing them the way,
For giving them a day
To rest, rejoice, with peace of mind to pray.
Just one Shabbos and we'll all be free
Just one Shabbos, come and join with me,
We'll sing and dance to the sky
With our spirits so high,
We'll show them all it's true
Let them come and join us too.
I said hello, my friend
You seem to be amused, He said much more than that
I am a bit confused,
I know I am a Jew
I was bar mitzvahed too,
But Shabbos in our home, who ever knew?
He asked to join with us
To understand and see,
He spent some time with us
In total ecstasy.
Next Shabbos came along
His feelings grew so strong, He first began to feel that he belonged.
Just one Shabbos and we'll all be free
Just one Shabbos, come and join with me, We'll sing and dance to the sky
With our spirits so high, We'll show them all it's true
Let them come and join us too.
He found this treasure
Made some changes in his life
A brand new family, his children and his wife, They learn new things each day
To live the Torah way,
The message of the Shabbos they will relay.
Now every Friday night they go down to the Wall
Invite some people home and they will tell them all, We'll teach you this new song
So join and sing along,
And soon we'll all be free, it won't be long.
Just one Shabbos and we'll all be free
Just one Shabbos, come and join with me, We'll sing and dance to the sky
With our spirits so high,
We'll show them all it's true
Let them come and join us too.
The song "Just One Shabbos" was composed by Mordechai Ben David and released on his 1981 album.
As I touched the match to the wick, I glanced at the wall clock behind me. 8:12 - two minutes to shkiah. Yet again.
I had so wanted to tzind early - or even just on time. But in the sudden last-minute whirl of “Ma, the shower water is cold” and “Did we warm up the challahs?” and “Why is the floor sticky again, it was just mopped?”, the clock had sprinted ahead of me, holding a golden trophy aloft, while I lagged behind in a futile race.
I sank onto the couch and exhaled. Aah. At least we had made it. Shabbos was finally upon us.
As my kids squished into all the corners around me, on my lap, and over my shoulder, pushing a book into my hands, I silently resolved that next week would be different. Next week I would finally tzind early.
Friday dawned like any other day in the country. The
pool, still empty and rippling lightly in the gentle morning breeze, beckoned invitingly. After an invigorating swim and a quick grocery run, I made a quick calculation. There were still eight hours to go.
I could do this.
By three in the afternoon, the house was gleaming, the kugel and ferfel were in the oven, and there was a fresh cake on the counter. I mentally patted myself on the back.
I bathed the kids, took a shower while the water was hot, and cleaned the few new dishes in the sink.
It was still an hour to Shabbos, and everyone was sitting around reading magazines in their Shabbos robes. It felt like a dream.
And then I looked at two-year-old Yitzy. Was I imagining it or was his breathing a little quick? I scooped him up and watched his chest rise and fall. Yes, his chest and stomach were definitely pulling in with every breath.
I felt my breathing growing faster.
Yitzy was prone to respiratory distress - any fever could trigger it. But he hadn’t had any incidents in a while.
I prepared the nebulizer and put it over his face for a few minutes. It should have helped instantly, but his breathing didn’t seem any better than before.
I knew the drill. Hatzalah, emergency room - the images made my head throb. I looked at Yitzy, looked at the clock. What to do?
At that moment, my husband walked in, wet peyos behind his ears, bag in hand.
“We have a problem,” I said grimly.
My husband looked at Yitzy’s breathing and nodded.
“I think we should take him to one of the hatzlah members here,” he suggested.
So we grabbed Yitzy and knocked on the closest Hatzalah member’s door. He was on his way out, but graciously stopped in his tracks and examined little Yitzy, who squirmed and tried to run off.
“Hmm, I don’t really like what I see,” he said thoughtfully as he held his hand to Yitzy’s chest.
“Rapid breathing, his chest is retracting. You know what? There’s a pediatrician here, Dr. Resnick, maybe he can help you avoid a visit to the emergency room.”
We thanked him for his time and headed off to find the doctor. When we knocked on his door, his wife informed us that he was in the pool. So off we traipsed to the pool. I stood outside, holding Yitzy’s hand tightly as my husband went to look for him.
I breathed a sigh of relief when my husband emerged together with him. Dr. Resnick. He stooped down to Yitzy’s level and observed his breathing.
“He needs steroids to open the lungs,” he announced authoritatively after a minute. “Come to my house in ten minutes and I’ll give you”
We hurried home to inform the other kids what was going on, then went to get the steroids.
“Give it to him for the next 48 hours and then follow up with your pediatrician,” he instructed as he gave us the small bottle.
I resigned myself to bringing in Shabbos a moment before shkiah, after a whirlwind marathon.
The weeks passed, with my average tzinding time ranging from three minutes after the zman to three minutes before shkiah.
“Just pretend the zman is fifteen minutes earlier,” my sister advised.
My kids tried moving the clock forward a few minutes, but somehow I still ended up still tzinding after the zman.
I unofficially gave up.
Then my cleaning lady gave notice. She had to go back to Mexico, she said. I took a few, long, calming breaths after she left and started making some phone calls.
Thankfully, someone had a cleaning lady available for the following Friday. I checked the floors critically, but didn’t find any spots.
She worked quickly and efficiently, without asking too many questions. I couldn’t believe my good fortune.
After she wiped down the kitchen, I took out fruit to chop up my famous fruit salad.
The new cleaning lady looked at me quizzically.
“Sabbath?” She asked.
“There’s still an hour to Shabbos,” I explained.
“And you no make Sabbath early?” She asked.
I dropped the apples and stared at her.
“What?” I repeated incredulously.
“The other lady I go, she make Sabbath early,” she explained sagely.
“Aah.” I was too surprised to even formulate a coherent answer.
I returned the fruits to the fridge, paid Helena, and sent her on her way.
But her question rang in my ears.
I quickly spread the white tablecloth in the kitchen and prepared my kids’ robes. What else? The house was clean, and the kids were calm. I changed into my robe and donned my Shabbos jewelry. The clock showed fifteen minutes to Shabbos.
We administered the medication on the porch and then ran back to our house.
It was five minutes after the zman when I finally stood, holding the match to the wick. Phew.
Baruch Hashem, Yitzy was ok and we were spending Shabbos at home, not in the emergency room.
But when would I finally manage to tzind early?
When next Friday rolled around, I made a halfhearted attempt to tzind early. And when I again welcomed Shabbos right before shkiah, I accepted that this just wasn’t to be. It wasn’t doable for me.
I took the matches, touched the wick to flame, and welcomed Shabbos like the long-awaited, muchanticipated guest it truly is.
A feeling of true calm and serenity enveloped me as I sat down to say my techinos.
I could do this. Why had I ever believed it was unattainable?
Just one Shabbos - that was all it took.
I don’t think I ever tzind Shabbos lecht after the zman since.
My cleaning lady’s words finally enabled me to enjoy the true bounty of Shabbos.
