Recap: Bruchi’s classmates discuss the bail hearing with shock and sympathy, even as some of the girls also feel a tiny sense of vindication. Mrs. Tabak, their teacher, is nervous about walking into class, knowing her students won’t have much of an attention span. Mrs. Gordon promises to come talk to the eighth graders later.

Officer Jerry reports to Casey Block that there’s no connection between the arrested person and Casey. Casey invites Jerry to his birthday party. Garrison reports to Blackman that he’s making progress on the drug bust operation.

Mrs. Gordon offers to learn a sefer on bitachon with the two Kleinberg girls. Despite Bruchi’s reservations, she agrees to join in.

CHAPTER 24

Originally, Mrs. Kleinberg and Shachne, who had been helping her figure out the bail arrangements, had thought they would be able to rely on Sam Kleinberg’s personal fortune to set a high enough bail amount that would satisfy a judge. But they quickly realized that all of the Kleinbergs’ assets had been frozen, and they couldn’t access any of it.

Sam Kleinberg’s lawyer, Mr. Solomon Gruen, had warned them that they had to prepare a ridiculously high amount for the bail offer if they wanted it to be

considered.

“You realize that they’re charging him for fraud and privacy violations that can be worth millions,” he explained. “In order to convince them that he’s not a flight risk, you’ll need a bail offer that’s worth millions, too.”

Fortunately, the Kleinbergs had a wide circle of family, friends and acquaintances who had the financial means to contribute to the bail offer. Even though some of the people were nervous about Sam Kleinberg’s innocence, and hadn’t contributed, they still managed to pull together an impressive offer. With all the cash and assets that were put up, the total was close to 5 million dollars.

Even with the high value of the fraud charges, the lawyers felt that this was a reasonable offer to bring to the hearing.

Still, they cautioned the Kleinbergs that there was no way to know if this would satisfy the judge or not. It was a high-profile case in every way, and the judge would be under pressure from the media to rule against the current bad boy – Sam Kleinberg.

In the wake of the frantic arrest, which had come as soon as the police had their first evidence that Sam Kleinberg was the culprit behind the collapse of Finance2, and all the subsequent losses to their users, it was hard for the lawyers to really prepare for the bail hearing properly. There simply wasn’t

enough time to go through the charges and strategize a defense.

Mrs. Kleinberg remembered all this keenly as she sat in the audience listening to the bail hearing. She had a feeling of dissociation, as if she was floating out of her body instead of sitting in the hard seat of the courtroom gallery.

She barely registered the presence, just a few feet away, of her husband, Sam Kleinberg himself, who was sitting in the defendant’s dock. •••

Mrs. Gordon smoothed open the English sefer she’d taken out, feeling her heart travel to her mouth.

There were two expectant faces looking up at her, and she didn’t feel up to the task of satisfying those expectations. How could she preach to these girls, when there was no way that she could truly understand the depth of their angst?

She gave a tiny sigh, and coughed as she looked down at the page she’d opened to.

“Do you really think it will help?” Bruchi asked, her voice small, looking at the sefer.

“This is the only thing that can help,” Mrs. Gordon said, surprising herself. She smoothed the page out one more time, and plunged in, starting to read in her confident voice.

She read and explained each paragraph they went through, trying to show the girls how the information was relevant to their situation.

Perry was an avid listener, as she always was. The pure sincerity on her soft, pale features made it easy for Mrs. Gordon to share her passion and conviction.

“So you think that one day we’ll look back and see how this was really good for us?” Perry asked.

“Yes,” Mrs. Gordon agreed.

“But then that means that even if my father doesn’t get bail, you’ll still say that that’s good, right?”

That came from Bruchi, of course.

Mrs. Gordon swallowed.

“If we rely on Hashem that He’s going to take care of us in the best way possible, then even if He does something that doesn’t seem good, we can know that it’s good, anyway.”

Bruchi inclined her head, accepting the answer. Mrs. Gordon continued reading, feeling that the words she was reading would give the girls something to hold onto, no matter what happened at the bail hearing across the city. As the minutes ticked by, she could feel the girls getting restless, looking at their watches. How long did a bail hearing take, anyway?

Suddenly, a cell phone ringtone interrupted her. Perry looked at the cell phone screen, and a stricken look appeared on her face.

“It’s Mommy,” she whispered to Bruchi. “I’ll pick up,” Bruchi offered.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Bruchi? I just wanted to make sure everything’s okay with you and Perry. The court has a break now, so-“

“What about the bail?!” Bruchi choked. “Is Tatty coming home?”

“We don’t know yet,” her mother answered impatiently. “It’s a very complicated case, and there wasn’t really enough time to prepare, so it might take a few days until we know, the lawyers said.” She didn’t let on her own disappointment at discovering that this was the case.

Mrs. Gordon couldn’t bear the look on Bruchi’s face as she listened to the words coming out of her mother’s mouth.

The word “bail” had been the rope she’d been clinging to, hoping it meant that the nightmare would be cut short that very day. Instead, it seemed that it would only be prolonging the ordeal.

There was thick silence in the office.

“So we’re not even going to know today?” Bruchi asked, daring her mother to dash her dreams again.

“Yes, that’s what I said. We don’t even know if Tatty is going to get bail eventually, so don’t get your hopes up.”

Bruchi was used to her mother’s curtness, but now, it stung so badly she wasn’t sure she could withstand the pain.

Her father was in jail, and her mother was denying her even the ability to hope that he would be let out very soon.

No bail meant her father would be stuck behind bars for the foreseeable future.

She wouldn’t even get to talk to him.

Who was going to take care of them?

Bruchi had been quiet so long, her mother was saying, “Bruchi? Bruchi, are you there?”

Perry took the phone from Bruchi’s slack hand.

“Mommy?” she said tentatively into the phone.

“Yes, Perry, is everything okay there?” Her mother sounded distracted, abrupt, even, but Perry, like Bruchi, was used to it.

“What about Tatty? Did you get to see him?”

Mrs. Kleinberg didn’t answer right away.

“Tatty is okay,” she said shortly. “Don’t worry about him. Are you managing?”

“Yes,” Perry whispered around the block of tears in her throat.

“Good, I’m going to talk to Uncle Shachne now,” her mother said, and hung up.

Perry’s cheeks were pink as she placed the phone gently down on her lap. She tried to control her trembling lips, but failed. Her mother hadn’t really answered her questions about her father. Was he okay after a whole day in jail?

The silence in the office stretched, as Mrs. Gordon tried to pretend she wasn’t there.

Finally, Bruchi spoke, focusing on the practical, as usual.

“What are we going to do?” Bruchi asked aloud, looking at Perry. “We can’t stay in Mrs. Gordon’s office for the next few days straight, learning bitachon until they decide if Tatty gets bail or not.”

She swallowed visibly.

Perry looked helplessly at Mrs. Gordon, then back at Bruchi.

“My mother doesn’t want us to be home alone,” she said. “She’s afraid.”

The two words settled in the room, bringing an air of anxiety with them.

“First of all, Bruchi, both of you are always welcome in my office, not only to learn bitachon, but even to just stay here,” Mrs. Gordon said firmly. “And don’t worry. You won’t have to be home alone. We’ll make sure of that.”

When the court resumed, Mrs. Kleinberg took her place again, maintaining her stony expression as she faced straight ahead, to minimize the gossip that would be going around.

A whole bunch of people had shown up from the community to show their support, but instead of feeling supported, Mrs. Kleinberg felt exposed, like they’d all come to witness her disgrace. She could feel all the inquisitive eyes on her, which made her throw her shoulders back to pretend she was feeling in control.

Out of the corner of her eye, she watched her husband, Shmiel, in the defendant’s dock.

Typical of Perry to ask after her father, the girl always worried about everyone around her. But she was happy that her girls couldn’t see their father right now.

He looked like a beaten person.

Even though his lawyers had worked strenuously to make sure that he would be allowed to change back into his street clothes for the court appearance, the effects of being incarcerated for 24 hours were immediately evident on Sam Kleinberg’s usually confident bearing.

He wasn’t wearing prison clothes, but his gray pallor was enough to make him look completely different. She almost didn’t recognize him.

He sat with a dazed air about him, as if he wasn’t quite sure of his surroundings. His face was lowered, and he didn’t meet the eyes of anyone around him, not even when he was spoken to.

It’s not Shmiel! She felt like screaming to all the people in the gallery. It’s not him! Don’t you see that it’s a different person sitting there?

But of course, she remained silent as the hearing continued, although she heard not a word.

She focused on keeping her back straight so that all the prying eyes would see that she hadn’t fallen apart, while inside her – everything was falling apart.

Sam Kleinberg had yet to turn around to acknowledge all the people who were sitting in the gallery as a show of support.

He also hadn’t yet noticed the teams of vicious media reporters, the curious gossipmongers, and everyone who was there because they wanted a taste of the action.

So dizzying had been his fall from grace that he had little inkling of what he was up against. He still didn’t have a clear idea of what the charges against him were.

Although Shachne and his lawyers had been in touch with him the day before to try to hear his side of the case, the rapidity of the arrest had left everyone reeling. This wasn’t the standard slow rotating of the wheels of justice.

So it was that Sam Kleinberg found himself facing a judge at a court hearing, listening to the charges being read as if it were all a dream. He was being asked to plead guilty or not guilty to each charge, as the arraignment took place before the bail discussion. But he had little understanding of each charge, and even as the lawyers explained them to him, it seemed they weren’t as clear as they should have been, either.

The worst part?

He wasn’t sure himself if he could plead not guilty to every charge.

Fuzzily, he remembered knowing that there were problems…when he’d installed the software, hadn’t he known there were risks? He had known something…he’d known that there were problems with the information sourcing, he’d known there were security measures he’d had to bypass to install the software. He’d taken a calculated risk, but it had misfired. Misfired badly enough that he was now being painted in the blackest of colors. And he couldn’t muster the certainty to say that they were completely wrong. •

CHOMETZ FREE ZONE

KIELBASA PUFFS

This delicious spin on a classic frank n’ blank is perfectly poppable, making for a delicious side dish or erev Shabbos addition.

Ingredients:

1 package puff pastry squares (36 pack)

1 package kielbasa, each kielbasa cut into 18 pieces

1/8 cup duck sauce

1/8 cup BBQ sauce

1/8 cup General Tso sauce

1 Tbsp spicy brown mustard

Everything bagel seasoning, for topping

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

2. In a small bowl, combine duck sauce, BBQ sauce, General Tso sauce and spicy brown mustard.

3. Using a pastry brush or a spoon, spread an even amount of sauce mixture on a sheet of puff pastry. Place a kielbasa slice in the center and fold corners inwards. Place on prepared baking sheet, seam side down.

4. Once prepared on a sheet, use the same mixture to brush tops. Sprinkle with everything bagel spice.

5. Bake for 35 minutes, until golden brown and puffed.

LOADED CAULIFLOWER

Breaded cauliflower is always a staple in my freezer. It makes for a delicious side. This elevated version is out of this world!! The crispness of the cauliflower and smokiness of the pastrami make for a fantastic flavor combination.

Ingredients:

Two bags frozen breaded cauliflower

2 6 oz packages pastrami, cubed

1 bunch scallions, chopped

Truffle mayonnaise, for topping

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375°.

2. On a lined baking sheet, spread breaded cauliflower. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until crispy.

3. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add cubed pastrami and fry for 10-15 minutes, until most of it is golden. Mix frequently.

4. Place pastrami over breaded cauliflower. Top with scallions and truffle mayonnaise.

SWEET AND SAVORY FRIED CHICKEN

This recipe utilizes the leftover challah and bread that have been sitting in the freezer. With a savory crumb mixture and a sweet coating, this will be an all-time favorite.

Ingredients:

1 1/2- 2 lbs chicken cutlets, cut into strips

1 cup Kravy sesame chicken sauce

2 tsp soy sauce

4 cups bread crumbs

3 Tbsp Italian spice seasoning or a mixture of oregano and parsley flakes

Oil, for frying

Directions:

1. To make your own crumbs using leftover challah/ bread: Cut bread into small chunks and place onto a baking sheet. Bake in a 350° oven until really toasted and crispy. Once cooled, place all pieces into a food processor. Blend until desired consistency is reached.

2. In a large bowl, combine soy sauce, sesame chicken sauce and chicken strips.

3. In a separate large bowl, place crumbs and Italian session. Mix well.

4. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.

5. Coat your chicken in crumb mixture add to frying pan, frying on both sides until golden brown.

AQIn my house, adults and children are constantly affected by pinworms. I would love some insight here. Thank you

Pinworms, also known scientifically as Enterobius vermicularis, are tiny parasitic worms that infect the intestines, particularly in children. While not usually a serious health threat, pinworm infestations can be uncomfortable and bothersome. Understanding what causes pinworms, who is most affected, how it spreads, and the available treatments is essential for managing and preventing this common infection.

Pinworms are caused by ingesting or inhaling microscopic pinworm eggs. These eggs can be found on contaminated surfaces such as bedding, clothing, toilet seats, or toys. When a person touches these surfaces and then touches their mouth, the eggs can enter their body and hatch in the intestines, leading to an infestation. We can all fully understand how and why our kids get affected by this. Think daycares, public toilets, lack of handwashing, etc.

Pinworm infections are most common in children, particularly those between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. However, they can affect people of all ages, especially those who live in close quarters or share personal items with infected individuals.

Pinworms are highly contagious and can spread easily from person to person. Transmission commonly occurs through the ingestion of microscopic eggs, but it can also happen through inhaling airborne eggs or direct contact with contaminated surfaces.

While there are several natural remedies suggested for treating pinworm infections, it's essential to note that scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited and over the counter products should be used. Please consult with your doctor before trying natural remedies. Some people find relief with the following approaches:

1. Garlic: Consuming raw garlic or garlic supplements is believed to have anti-parasitic properties that may help eliminate pinworms. To create a salve, chop up a few cloves of garlic and grind them into a paste. Mix the garlic paste with a small amount of petroleum jelly or other base oil. Dip a clean cotton swab into the mixture and apply the salve to the affected area. Do not use if you have sensitive skin, if the area has a burning sensation, or if you have broken skin.

2. Pumpkin Seeds: Pumpkin seeds contain a compound called cucurbitacin, which is thought to have anti-parasitic effects. Eating raw pumpkin seeds or drinking pumpkin seed tea may help expel pinworms from the body.

3. Probiotics: Adding probiotic-rich foods like yogurt or kefir to your diet may help restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut, which can support the body's natural defenses against pinworms. Also, ask your local health store about what probiotics to buy.

4. Coconut oil: Coconut is said to have antibacterial and antiviral properties that may help clear a pinworm infection. This treatment requires a two-step approach. Swallow a teaspoon of pure coconut oil each morning. Before you go to bed, rub a small amount of coconut oil into the affected area.

5. Raw carrots: It’s thought that eating a cup of raw, shredded carrots twice per day can help your body push the worms through your intestines. This is because the fiber-rich carrots can improve digestion and promote bowel movement.

6. Growing up, we were always told not to eat too much sugar as it may cause pinworms. While sugar won’t cause pinworms, sugar does allow them to thrive. Starve them of their favorite food by limiting or totally avoiding sugars. In many cases, natural remedies alone may not be sufficient to eradicate pinworm infections, especially in more severe cases. In such instances, medication prescribed by a healthcare professional may be necessary. Commonly used medications for treating pinworms include:

Mebendazole: This antiparasitic medication is typically taken as a single dose and works by killing the pinworms in the intestines. It works by stopping the worms from using sugar. Without sugar, the cells of the worms lose their energy supply and quickly die. Mebendazole does not kill the eggs of the worm. This is why you may need to take another dose 2 weeks later to prevent reinfection.

Pyrantel Pamoate: Similar to mebendazole, pyrantel pamoate is an antiparasitic medication that paralyzes the pinworms, allowing them to be expelled from the body through bowel movements.

Some of you may wonder if these medications can possibly unbalance all your “good worms/bacteria” and that is a good question indeed, which will need to be addressed in a future article as it is an inconclusive and fully loaded topic. In addition to natural remedies and medication, practicing good hygiene habits is crucial for preventing and managing pinworm infections. These habits include:

1. Regular Handwashing: Encourage frequent handwashing, especially after using the restroom and before eating or preparing food.

2. Keeping Nails Short: Short nails make it harder for pinworm eggs to become trapped underneath, reducing the risk of transmission.

3. Washing Bedding and Clothing: Launder bedding, pajamas, and underwear regularly in hot water to kill any lingering pinworm eggs.

While pinworm infections can be uncomfortable and inconvenient, they are generally treatable with a combination of natural remedies, medication, and good hygiene practices. By understanding the causes, transmission, and available treatments for pinworms, individuals can take proactive steps to manage and prevent these parasitic infections effectively. If you suspect you or your child has a pinworm infection, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment guidance.

When a Jew brought an animal as a Korban, it symbolized that he was also eliminating his animalistic behaviors & channeling that energy toward holiness.

IMAGINE

You lived in the times of the Mishkan or Bais Hamikdash. If someone had done something wrong (an aviera), they would seek to make up for it through the process of Teshuvah, by bringing up a Korban. They would be required to first examine the animal and make sure that it had no defects. For example, it couldn’t be sick, blind, or missing a limb. Only then could it be offered up on the fire of the Mizbeach. Burning the Korban represented the act of throwing away and burning that part of their Nefesh Habahamis that led them to commit the aveirah.

BRING IT HOME

How can we apply the concept of bringing our “Nefesh Habahamis” as a Korban to Hashem in our daily lives?

Nowadays we aren’t able to bring physical Korbanos, since we don’t have a Bais Hamikdash. However, the process of the Korbanos still takes place within each one of us, inside our hearts. Hashem made us with 2 very different parts. A Neshama, which is a piece of Hashem & a Nefesh Habehamis, an animal soul. This animal within us only thinks about its own needs, what feels good & pleasurable. Just as a physical animal was brought as a Korban, we can also bring the animal part of ourselves as a Korban to Hashem. Similar to the way the animal had to be checked for any blemishes, we too can look inside ourselves and see if there is anything we have done that needs a little fixing. Just like the animal was put into the fire of the Mizbeach, we too can set our Nefesh Habahamis on fire with the love of Hashem. This means that we can still enjoy things, like an animal knows how to, but instead of doing it just for ourselves, we can do it for Hashem. For example, when you eat a delicious snack, instead of just appreciating the yummy taste, you can think about how eating this snack will give you the energy to Daven, help your mommy, or learn at school.

Cut off about 2-3 inches of the top of the tube sock.

Glue the googly eyes onto the face. Cut black tissue paper into small squares. Scrunch them into balls.

Cut a small oval from pink felt for the mouth. Glue below the eyes. Add features with a marker.

Cow Stuffie PARSHA

Stuff the sock with stuffing, ensuring it’s evenly distributed. Fold the top of the sock in to hide any protruding edges.

Glue the scrunched ball spots around the cow. Use brown tissue paper to make horns & glue them near the ears on top of the cow. Glue the seam shut.

What are you going to name your Cow Stuffie?

To create hands, feet, and ears, take a piece of sock & stuffing, pinch it, then tie a rubber band around it. Use two sections for the feet, two for the hands, & two for the ears.

Glue 2 pompoms together & create 4 pairs. Then, attach each pair to one of the hands and legs to serve as hooves.
