Recap: Chayala Gordon approaches Mrs. Foxman to ask if she can give up her job as class president. Mrs. Gordon is trying to figure out how she can help her students, the Kleinberg girls, when her husband points out that this may not be the wisest course of action to take.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Foxman calls to ask Mrs. Gordon if she knows why Chayala is determined to give up her role as class president. As soon as Mrs. Gordon hangs up the phone, Mrs. Kleinberg calls in to ask her to talk to Bruchi, who is determined to stay home from school until her father comes home.

CHAPTER 23

Instead, Mrs. Gordon said diplomatically, “Mrs. Kleinberg, we would love to have Bruchi back in school with us tomorrow, but I understand that it may be a little difficult for her to do so. Perhaps she would benefit from a few days at home?”

She made sure to phrase it as a question, so as not to invoke Mrs. Kleinberg’s ire.

But she managed to get it over her head, anyway.

“Mrs. Gordon, you don’t understand. My husband is going to have his bail hearing tomorrow morning.”

Mrs. Kleinberg’s voice was taut, and Mrs. Gordon could hear how sour the words tasted in her mouth.

“There is no way that Bruchi is coming along for this. Do you understand me now?”

Mrs. Gordon caught her breath for a moment before responding.

“Yes, I hear you.” She paused. “I’ll speak to Bruchi.”

She avoided her husband’s eyes as he continued following the conversation avidly, though he didn’t try to interfere.

“Thank you,” Mrs. Kleinberg said, in the kind of tone that said, You are finally being reasonable.

There was a rustle, and then the sound of the phone being passed over.

Mrs. Gordon pictured Bruchi taking a deep breath as she prepared to speak to her principal in the live nightmare she was experiencing, with a new grotesque horror confronting her everywhere she turned.

From Bruchi’s tentative, “Hello?” it seemed that Mrs. Gordon’s imaginings were close on the mark.

“Hi Bruchi,” Mrs. Gordon said, trying to inject as much caring as she could into the greeting. “It’s probably going to be hard for you to sit in class tomorrow, am I right?”

Bruchi grunted.

“I have an idea for you, Bruchi. When you come to school tomorrow, come straight to my office, instead of going to class. Okay?”

“Okay,” Bruchi said, and the clear undertone of a sob at the edge of her voice made Mrs. Gordon’s heart twist.

“Yes?” Mrs. Gordon asked.

“I don’t want to see anyone when I come,” Bruchi said, her voice low.

“I understand that. How about you come a little early?”

“Okay,” Bruchi said again.

“I’m in my office from 8:15, so you can come as early as you like.”

There was another rustle at the other end of the line, and then Bruchi said, “Um, Mrs. Gordon?”

“Yes?”

“Can Perry come with me?”

“Of course,” Mrs. Gordon said immediately. “I’ll be waiting for both of you.”

“Okay, one minute, my mother wants to say something,” Bruchi said.

Mrs. Kleinberg took the phone again.

“Thank you, Mrs. Gordon,” she said perfunctorily.

“The bail hearing is scheduled for 9:00 tomorrow morning, so if we are able to post bail, then my girls will obviously come right home.”

“Sure.” Mrs. Gordon said. “Let’s hope for good news and that your husband will get bail.”

“Don’t count on it,” Mrs. Kleinberg said sardonically.

“The lawyers aren’t very hopeful.”

Mrs. Gordon caught her breath again.

“Hashem can always help,” she said softly, almost too softly for Mrs. Kleinberg to hear.

“Whatever will be, will be,” Mrs. Kleinberg said.

There was quiet on the line for a moment.

“Anyway, thanks for offering to be with my girls tomorrow,” Mrs. Kleinberg said, and this time there was real human warmth in the expression of gratitude.

“Of course. Have a good night,” Mrs. Gordon said, and the phone went dead.

Mrs. Gordon put the phone on the table, looking dazed. “Whoa!” Nachman said. “Heavy, heavy, heavy, am I right?”

“Yes,” Mrs. Gordon said, still looking dazed.

“I guess they somehow knew that you were desperate to help them,” Nachman said jokingly.

“What a story,” Mrs. Gordon said, too overwhelmed to pay attention to what her husband was saying. “Can you believe it?”

“What did she say?” Nachman asked.

“She said that the bail hearing is tomorrow morning, and she didn’t want the girls to come…so they’re going to be in my office instead.”

Mrs. Gordon swallowed. “Not that I have any idea what to say to them, but I have to be there for them, somehow.”

She looked up at her husband. “Don’t you see now why I have to help them?”

“It definitely sounds like they’ve eaten enough humble pie to last a while,” her husband said. “Of course, there was no way you could say no to that kind of request.”

“Right.”

The two of them sat for a moment, contemplating the Kleinbergs’ saga.

“What was that first phone call, though?” Nachman asked. “Before Mrs. Kleinberg called in?”

Mrs. Gordon’s expression cleared.

“Such a weird phone call,” she said. “It was Chayala’s extracurricular director. She claims that Chayala asked her today if she could give up her job as class president! She couldn’t figure out why she would ever want to do that.”

“She wants to give up her job?” Nachman asked in surprise.

Mrs. Gordon nodded. “You think it’s because she thinks that I’m working too hard, now that she’s out of the house so much? I wonder if she overheard anything about me giving up my job?”

Nachman smiled.

“What’s so funny?” his wife demanded.

“Nothing,” he said, chuckling. “Like mother, like daughter. First you want to give up your job, now Chayala does…looks like it’s becoming catchy!”

Darkness and quietness did nothing to help Mrs. Kleinberg relax that night.

Not that she was expecting to be able to fall asleep. She hadn’t even gone up to her bedroom, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to handle her husband’s missing presence.

But wrapped in her favorite throw on the recliner in the living room, Mrs. Kleinberg could not stop her racing heart, her trembling hands, and her frantic thoughts. She’d triple-checked the locks on the doors, and she’d chased the girls and Mutty into bed.

Her married children had gone home. Shachne had finally gone home, too, way after midnight.

After reaching the conclusion that fleeing would be foolhardy and probably endanger her husband’s chances for release, they’d shelved that idea and threw all their efforts toward putting together a good bail offer.

Shachne had been here for hours, speaking to family and friends and coordinating with Shmiel’s lawyers. A lot of the people he’d spoken to had wanted to speak to her, to offer their support, moral or otherwise. But she’d refused, over and over again.

There was no way she was going to accept any more help than was absolutely necessary. She trusted Shachne, he was a savvy businessman. But she locked everyone else out.

Sitting on the recliner, muscles tense from stress, she thought about her siblings, Mindy, her sister-inlaw, her cousins, her neighbors, even her children. She hadn’t let Yossi stay for the night, though he’d offered.

No, she couldn’t let herself become a weakling who needed to rely on the whole world for help. Her thoughts continued to go in circles, as the clock

Not being especially worldly, she didn’t have much to draw on as she tried to imagine it.

Would he be wearing a prison outfit?

Mrs. Kleinberg pictured her husband walking into the courtroom in striped pajamas, which nearly made her throw up.

What would he look like? Beaten and depressed, defiant and angry?

She hadn’t gotten to speak to him at all since the arrest, just a few hours ago but what felt like universes away.

Shachne had said it was best not to try to work on contacting him now, to focus their efforts on getting bail, and then he would be able to stay at home until the trial.

The words bail and trial made her even more nauseous.

If they got bail, and Shmiel was released tomorrow, what would that look like?

What would she say to him?

What did she even feel about all this?

She thought about her husband walking through the front door after spending 24 hours in jail, coming home to their palatial mansion where he’d always been the boss.

What would it be like to have him home after this humiliating experience?

She’d expended so much effort the last few hours to ensure that her husband would be able to come home. As soon as he came home, she’d felt, he would take control of the situation, quiet all the rumors, and go back to being the successful person he’d always been. Sure, he’d have to stand trial, but she wouldn’t have to worry about it, because he would take care of it, the way he always took care of everything.

But what if he came home broken, a shell of himself, because of this terrible arrest?

Could she really deal with that?

No, she couldn’t.

She was so used to him being the protector, the arranger, the strong one. There was no way she could all of a sudden become a strong, supportive wife.

And if truth be told…she almost didn’t want to.

He’d done it to himself, after all. Why had he ever gone ahead with this awful AI monster?

“WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE TO HAVE HIM HOME AFTER THIS HUMILIATING EXPERIENCE?”

She felt a sudden rise of unexpected anger. Why had Shmiel done this? Why had he ruined their lives like this? Didn’t he care about his family? What had he been thinking?

Surely, he hadn’t known what he was doing.

Surely, he hadn’t done anything illegal.

Surely, this was all truly a mistake.

Surely…?

Bruchi, upstairs in bed because her mother had sent her there, was just as far from falling asleep as her mother.

She’d been crying all night, ever since her mother had sent her upstairs.

Curled up in a ball, crushing her pillows in her arms, she was sitting at the edge of her bed wrapped up in her world of confused pain.

What had she done to deserve this, anyway?

Every time she thought the tears were finally stopping, a new wave of sobs overtook her so strongly that she felt her chest would burst.

Taaattty!!, she felt like crying, like a two-year-old waking up from a nightmare and looking for his father’s strong and protective arms.

Only, her father was part of the nightmare now.

The events of the day replayed over and over in her mind.

How Shachne had nearly booked tickets for their whole family to fly out of the country, today.

(Would the police still arrest them?!)

How Perry and Yossi had convinced him that it didn’t make sense.

How her mother and Shachne had started talking to the lawyers.

How they’d heard that the bail hearing would be at 9 o’clock the next morning.

How everyone had been busy the next few hours with arranging a bail package.

How she’d told her mother that she wanted to come to the bail hearing.

How her mother had insisted that she needed to go to school.

How she’d put up a huge fuss, yelling and crying that there was no way she was going to school.

How Mrs. Gordon had said she would be welcome in her office tomorrow morning.

While her life was being decided in a courtroom across the city.

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 12: None of the frum girls seem to want the job of preschool assistant. Naomi is interested in opening a special class for the older girls in the school, but her mother won’t let her keep the job of preschool teacher for too much longer.

Binyamin asks his mother about his father’s notebooks which contain his chiddushei Torah and sketches. Rechel tells him she won’t give them to Binyamin, because they bring up too many painful memories for her.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

To Naomi Schvirtz.

Due to complaints about a violation of the status quo with regard to the education of the children in the kindergarten, you are invited to the camp committee office tomorrow at ten in the morning to discuss the division of jobs in the preschool.

“Binyamin will come with you,” Rechel said as she studied the official paper with the Samson Lager logo on it. “You won’t go alone.”

“Okay.” There was a small crease between Naomi’s eyes.

“But I’m not sure that I understand what it says here. Who complained about a violation in the status quo? Me, regarding the future assistant, or Mila? Maybe she tattled to

them that I announced that, ‘Anyone who wants to bentch should come’?”

“What do you mean? What did Bilhah do?”

“She would say, ‘Rabbi Schwartzbrod’s group, come and bentch.’”

“And do the children from the other group come to bentch when you invite them all?”

“Quite a few of them do.”

Rechel smiled. “I love you, Naomi,” she said, and opened the door to the house. “Well, if that will be grounds to fire you, I’ll certainly be happy.” She paused at the entrance. “The question is really what will be with the preschool. You know that Babbe tried to persuade some families to send their girls to work there, and the Herzlichs promised to seriously consider sending their Shaindy there, as long as she would be replaced in a couple of years with other girls as they grow older.”

She nodded to herself and entered the house. “In any case,

whether they want to scold you or if they want to talk about your disagreement with Mila regarding the new assistant, for you it is good.” She took a container of butter out of the cooler cabinet and looked at Naomi. “And really, the main chinuch happens at home. The influence that the preschool has on the child’s soul is minor, so you don’t need to battle to stay there and destroy your life.”

“Destroy?” Naomi echoed.

“Yes.” Rechel stood for a moment with closed eyes, and then she turned around suddenly, as if she’d swallowed something very bitter. “Chaya Kush has two excellent sons. But she told me clearly, explicitly, that she won’t do any shidduch that will subject her children to a life of hard labor in order to support their family.” ***

“Young Herr Schvirtz,” Leo Sherer said tightly, “your sister does not keep to the criteria that were set between the two communities here. In the past it was decided that in the preschool, the two groups would be managed separately, to the extent possible, and she is forcing them to mingle. This cannot continue.”

He didn’t finish the sentence with a question mark, and Naomi did not know if she was expected to respond. So she remained silent.

“On the other hand, there is the problem of the assistant,” the man continued. “As has been accepted through the years, one of the assistants is meant to be yours, and one is ours. But for some reason…” A smile turned the corners of his lips upward as he pulled a sheet of paper from a drawer in his desk. “Here is the list of candidates. Miss Schvirtz may look at it, and she may have the right to choose.”

She approached the table hesitantly, feeling like the defendant with the verdict hanging over her being presented in writing. Binyamin approached and also looked at the four names on the paper. None of them meant anything to him. But Naomi felt like it was hard for her to breathe. “Excuse me, sir,” she said loudly, unable to remain silent, “but there isn’t a single name here from the Orthodox group!”

“Herzlich, who is thirteen, actually submitted a candidacy, but we took her off the list.” Sherer’s eyebrows knitted in

Her eyes sought out something to fix themselves onto, and finally she found the collar of Leo’s jacket, hanging on a hook near the door. Leo was one of only two people who were allowed to wear fur here. He, and Max, his older brother, who had passed away seven years earlier. The two of them had brought the secret of the fur production from their home in Hungary, light years ago.

The collar had long brown hairs in an ombré pattern going from light to dark. On the bottom right edge was a golden, metallic elliptical shape, with a large W stamped into it. Their symbol. ***

“Do you see the symbol on that jacket, Dena?” Her motherin-law’s eyes were gleaming like the glass they were facing. “That’s the trademark of Wangel. You’ve probably never heard of the company; in Israel you don’t have such things. But you know my brown coat? That’s from them. My mother, may she be well, also has a scarf from them. Look what a gorgeous jacket!”

“Really nice.” Dena nodded vigorously.

“You just wait and see what’ll happen when Bentzy remembers there is such a thing… I imagine that you’ll get something magnificent from their line. When he was a boy, he loved to play with my mother’s scarf. He spent hours stroking the smooth fur. You should have seen his eyes then!”

Oy, people’s eyes should be shining from talk about other things, Dena wanted to say. But she knew that she couldn’t change people, certainly not her mother-in-law. Instead, she said mechanically, “Furs really are special.”

“And expensive,” her mother-in-law added with a chuckle. “Such a jacket costs more than thirteen hundred dollars.” She looked at Dena, and a thin veneer of sadness in her eyes dulled the reflection of the garment in the shop window. “I’ll tell Bentzy that the minute we’ll be able to—I hope for your birthday—I want to contribute to such a gift for you.” The shvigger turned her eyes and looked further down the street, to the cars speeding past, and continued walking in that direction. “You deserve it—you’re such a good wife.”

Dena smiled as she followed her, but only one part of the smile was genuine; the bigger part of it was only trying to appear as such. “It’s fine, you shouldn’t get it for me. I’m not the type who needs these kinds of things.”

Her legs were hurting already, but apparently Ringstrasse, the ring-shaped boulevard, had no beginning or end. Well, circles never have a beginning or end.

“In Israel you might not need such things,” her mother-in-law said with firm motherliness, banishing the gleam of softness and vulnerability that had been in her eyes before. “I really admire the chinuch your parents gave you, but here, a good coat like that is not a luxury. How cold is it there? Here, in the winter, it’s freezing, below zero. People here need good, warm, quality clothes. You’ve come to Europe, Dena; you’re in Vienna. Don’t forget.”

As if I could forget it for a minute, Dena wanted to say. Instead, she said, “Thank you for everything, really, but winter is still far away. And I don’t want to put you out… We really only came to help.”

Her mother-in-law nodded, speaking as she walked briskly. “We’ve been waiting for you to come. Abba has been speaking about it since the mess in the business began and everything became so complicated. We need extra hands there, a young mind, young energy… We felt that we needed him here, next to us. And it was really nice of your parents to be so understanding about it.”

Did they have a choice?

“But even before the coat and the winter clothes, let’s buy something for now, for you and the boys. Do they have

enough pants?”

“Hmmm…I think so. Maybe it’s a good idea for us to go back, because Bentzy said that he would bring them home early today, so that the transfer to a new place should be gradual. I want to be home when they get there.”

“Oh, that’s a shame. We’ve hardly managed to buy anything, not for you or for them!” her doting mother-in-law said regretfully. “But at least you got to see some of Vienna, right? We can always go out again tomorrow.”

When they reached the entrance of the tall apartment building, she saw Bentzy’s father’s car approaching from a distance. It stopped and only her husband emerged from it.

“Looks like the boys are managing fine, so I left them until the end of the school day.” He was beaming from ear to ear. “The rebbeim welcomed them so nicely, and all the kids in their classes were very excited to have new friends from Eretz Yisroel. So everything’s great, baruch Hashem. You don’t need to worry about them.”

“You were there until now, from the morning?” Bentzy’s mother asked him as they got into the elevator.

“No, I went around the city a little bit, too,” he answered lightly. “It was nostalgic to be in my hometown again…”

“Just a nostalgic little tour?” The shvigger was not letting up.

“Well, I also went to see a couple of apartments. I think one of them might work out for us.”

“An apartment for you!” His mother looked like she was about to faint. “Won’t you let me enjoy you at least another week, Bentzy?”

“Two weeks, at least.” He chuckled as they walked out of the elevator. “It will only be available then.”

“We’ll pay your rent, of course, and bli neder, I hope that before the winter, I will be able to help you buy a fur coat for Dena, from Wangel.”

“What, like the kind of scarf Bubby has?”

His mother laughed as she pressed the code for the door. “Exactly. They are also the manufacturers of my coat, and they are excellent. To this day, Bubby’s scarf is like new. You hear what I’m saying, Dena?”

Dena nodded with a smile, but in her heart, she felt far from smiling. She’d felt like this often in recent days. In recent months. In the last year.

And her heart clenched when she thought about the gold crown of Yerushalayim, the city from which she was growing more and more distant. The maximum her in-laws were ready to promise her was a fur coat—that was all.

PURIM PARTY PLEASERS

These delicious recipes are perfect to enhance your upcoming Purim seudah. They are all great at room temperature, adding beautiful variety to your table.

DEVOIRY FEDER @SPRINKLEDBYVO

BAKED CHICKEN POPPERS WITH BBQ BOURBON DIPPING SAUCE

Purim is full of unhealthy foods, in Mishloach Manos or at the Purim seudah. This delicious, baked popper is full of flavor, crispy and perfect for all ages. Paired with the perfect dipping sauce, it’ll be a star at your table.

Ingredients:

2 lbs. chicken nuggets, cut in half

1 egg

2 Tbsp BBQ sauce

1 Tbsp mayonnaise

½ tsp salt

½ tsp garlic

18 oz (2 cans) unflavored panko crumbs

2 Tbsp smoked paprika

BBQ Bourbon Sauce:

½ cup BBQ sauce

3 Tbsp maple syrup

1 Tbsp bourbon

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375°, on convection mode. Line a metal baking sheet with parchment paper and grease well. (This results in a crispy chicken popper)

2. In a large bowl, combine egg, BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, salt and garlic. Add chicken nuggets, mix well and marinate for a minimum of 10 minutes.

3. In a separate, large bowl, add panko crumbs and smoked paprika. Mix to combine.

4. Coat marinated chicken well with panko crumbs. Place on lined and greased baking sheet. Spray well. Bake for 18 minutes.

5. In a small bowl, combine all dipping sauce ingredients. Once poppers are slightly cooled, drizzle sauce. Serve and enjoy.

FILLO DOUGH HAMENTASH

This deli roll style hamentash is perfect to display on your Purim table. Made with Fillo dough, its crispy and light. This can be made with regular puff pastry as well.

Ingredients:

½ box Fillo dough

½ stick margarine, melted

¼ cup sweet BBQ sauce

¼ cup smoky BBQ sauce

¼ cup duck sauce

1 Tbsp mustard

3 6 oz packages of deli meat (I used turkey pastrami, turkey roll and pastrami)

Everything bagel spice, for topping

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°. On a lined sheet pan, spread Fillo dough sheets in layers. Add melted margarine to pan and brush evenly across dough.

2. In a small bowl, add BBQ sauce, bone suckin sauce, duck sauce and mustard. Mix to combine.

3. Spread half the sauce on the dough, leaving a small border at the edge. Add deli meat in layers. Roll the edges a bit inwards to create a triangle shape. Brush the exposed dough and top layer of deli meat with the remaining sauce mixture. Sprinkle everything bagel spice on exposed layer of dough. Bake for 35 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

CHICKEN PASTA SALAD

This delicious pasta salad is made with Complete Quinoa’s new pasta products. No one would even know its healthy pasta. The chicken addition makes this salad filling and adds a twist to the traditional pasta salad.

Ingredients:

1 box Complete Quinoa fusilli pasta

1 lb. chicken cutlets cut into small strips

1/8 cup olive oil

3 tsp Montreal steak seasoning

2 tsp oregano

2 tsp parsley

1 red pepper, finely diced

½ purple onion, finely diced

Dressing:

5 Tbsp mayonnaise

4 Tbsp lemon juice

3 Tbsp sugar

1 tsp kosher salt

Directions:

1. Cook pasta according to box instructions.

2. In a large bowl, combine olive oil, Montreal steak seasoning, oregano and parsley. Add chicken strips and marinate for 15-20 minutes.

3. Heat a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add an additional 2 Tbsp of oil. Add marinated chicken and mix well. Cook until done, around 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Combine all dressing ingredients in a container, shake to combine.

5. In a large bowl, add cooked pasta, chicken, red pepper and purple onion. Dress salad, mix and serve.

Our Tefillos can shine just like the gems on the Kohen Gadol’s Choshen

IMAGINE

You created a secret language to communicate with a friend or family member. Morse code is an example of a secret language that is made up of dots & dashes that translate into letters. Different militaries have used this language in the past. However, some other languages or codes use shapes, numbers, or other signs to create secret messages. While some of these secret codes may seem confusing or silly, with the right tools, we would be able to decipher the codes and read the messages.

The Choshen was one of the garments of the Kohen Gadol & it served as a means of communication between the Yidden & Hashem through a type of code. It was made of a piece of cloth woven with many beautiful colors. Across the front 12 different gems corresponded to the 12 Shevatim. Each gem had the name of a Shevet inscribed on it. This wasn’t just for decoration, but when the Yidden were in doubt, Hashem would cause some of the letters on the gems of the Choshen to light up. The letters had to be rearranged to reveal the message. It was like a code that the Kohen Gadol had to decipher. There is a valuable lesson to be learned from this. A stone cannot grow, think, or do much besides sitting there, but it can sparkle & shine. In the case of the Choshen, the stones even become one of the ways Hashem communicated with the Yidden. When we speak to Hashem, when we Daven, sometimes our words may feel lifeless or dull, like a motionless stone. However, if we Daven with enthusiasm & energy, then each Tefillah, & even every word of the Tefillah, becomes like a sparkling, shining gem. One way to make our words & Tefillos shine even more is by understanding what we are saying. Knowing what Tefillah means can help us connect with the Tefillah, which enables us to make the words come alive.

What can

do to shine like the stones of the Choshen?

Hydrodip Choshen Mishpat PARSHA

Cut the (3”x1.5”) cards in half to create 12 rectangular halves.

Swirl different colors with a toothpick to create a marbled design. It’s truly magical!

After allowing the cards to dry for some time, arrange them in a 3x4 pattern on the gold paper. Cut off any excess paper. To create the necklace tape a piece of ribbon on the back of the Choshen.

Fill a plastic tray with water so that it’s three-quarters full.

Slide the card through the water & ensure the card is right under the marbled design. Then, carefully take the card out of the water, with the marble design printed on top.

Choose one or two colors of the special water marbeling acrylic paint, & drop a few drops into the water.

Hydrodip all 12 cards by repeating steps 2-5 with different color combinations and trays. Let dry for a few minutes.
