Recap of Chapter 64

Yosef wants to go to the American Embassy to renew his passport right away. Hinda was supposed to go with him, but then Penina's baby falls and hurts herself, and Dov and Hinda rush to the hospital to be with them. Still, Yosef refuses to cancel the appointment, and he takes Martin with him instead. Martin is concerned about Yosef's wild, unstable behavior.

Michoel calls Hinda with the news that the center is willing to accept Yosef for treatment!

CHAPTER SIXTY FIVE

Yosef’s face was almost as gray as the silvery gray chairs in the room. “No,” he said suddenly. “No, I can’t breathe here. Come, Martin, let’s go.”

“Huh? You can’t breathe?”

“I’m going to get an attack in another minute.” Yosef’s eyes were hard. “It’s because of that horrid photographer. I saw him on the way here, before we came in. He came to tell everyone that it’s me.”

“That what’s you?”

“That it’s me from the picture. I can’t. I can’t. I can’t.”

“I don’t understand. Don’t you want to renew your passport?” Martin asked. Maybe it was a good idea for him to learn psychiatry, although the computer world still captivated his interest.

“I really do want to renew it, but we can’t put my picture on it. We can’t! They will catch me, I know!” His eyes flitted around rapidly, and he appeared to be trying to look in a few directions at once. Martin was not able to discern

who or what Yosef was looking at; maybe he wasn’t even looking at anything.

“There’s no such thing as a passport without a picture,” Martin said patiently to Yosef.

“But I can’t.” Yosef sounded breathless. “They cannot use my picture inside.” He took out his Israeli ID card and opened the flap. A seventeen-year-old boy, smiling into the camera, fixed his gray eyes on Martin from the photo.

“That’s you?” Martin asked, suppressing the urge to remark, “I would never have guessed.”

“Yes. Now where is the photo that they took of you in the photo store?” Yosef asked, panting as if he’d just run a fiftymile marathon.

“Mine? In my passport.”

“No, when you took a picture the same time as I did.” Yosef rummaged in his pants pocket and pulled out a collection of little things. “Here,” he said, choosing the little packet that contained the six copies of the picture of Martin and sticking it into Martin’s hands. “Tell them to use your picture inside, not mine.”

“My picture in your passport? But you can’t travel with such a passport!” Martin laughed. “You’ll get to the airport, they’ll compare you to the picture, and tell you that your passport is forged!”

Yosef looked at him a bit blankly. “I’ll tell them it’s me. You have gray eyes, like I do, even if you’re thinner than me. It makes no difference. You won’t come with me to the airport, and they won’t see you or get confused. Look, it’s almost our turn. Go tell them it’s you, Yosef Schorr.” He coughed. “And let them use your picture. That will mix up all the people who are following me. Now, I’m leaving, and

soon you’ll bring me out my new passport. You got it?”

“I don’t know if you get it on the spot.”

“Well, just tell them you need it urgently!”

“Wait, where are you going?” Martin grabbed his arm.

“Leave me alone! Enough!” Yosef barked at him as he stumbled toward the exit, leaving the bag with all the documents on the windowsill.

Martin looked alternately at Yosef’s receding back and the bag on the windowsill. Yosef’s mother was right; he couldn’t travel anywhere. Not like this. Even if the thought of rescuing his suffering uncle infused him with positive energy, it probably came on account of something else. He bent down to pick up the bag.

Yosef suddenly appeared from behind him. “You’re doing it?”

“I don’t know,” Martin whispered. “What for? It won’t be a usable passport.”

“It will be!” Yosef’s voice rose, and his face reddened. The security guard raised his head to look at them, and Martin had the feeling that if he would come over to find out what the animosity was about, things would only get worse. “Go! To! The! Desk! And show me afterward all the photos and the copies of the documents that they prepare. I want to see that you don’t dare use my picture!”

Martin nodded, hoping Yosef would calm down quickly. The security guard was not the only person watching them closely.

He looked at his picture. There was no similarity between him and Yosef, but if he submitted Yosef’s Israeli ID card, and his passport from age eight, they would not be able to decide with certainty that it was someone else. And truth to be told, if there was a chance of Martin getting a passport with his picture and someone else’s name, it certainly would be easier for him to get into Canada. Of course, as long as he didn’t circulate in those areas that he’d frequented before he left. Not that Yosef’s mother would agree for him to take a passport in her son’s name, but if he would promise her that he’d go first to America, to see what could be done for her uncle, perhaps she’d be convinced…

At worst, they would report afterward that the passport had gotten lost, and if it was urgent, they would issue a new one with the right picture. Now, in any case, it did not seem to him like poor Yosef could fly anywhere, and Martin’s prediction was that, with things the way they were now, even ten years might not be enough to get Yosef to a state where he could fly—and by then the passport would expire. ***

“You approved it! He told me!”

Dr. Jerry raised his eyes from his loaded plate. “I’m sorry,

Mike, but it’s not acceptable for patients to enter my dining room.” His brother also gazed upon the young man who’d burst into the room, with wide, cold eyes.

“Okay, but it’s not acceptable to me that Perl’s Israeli relative gets to come here for treatment and not my sister!”

“This is a twenty-four-year-old man we’re talking about, not a six-year-old child,” the doctor said firmly. “He’s not a minor.” And with that, he turned his attention back to his plate.

“Minor or adult, it makes no difference to me. My sister is going to die, and you’re not doing anything about it! You promised me a meeting, and you did nothing in the meantime! Tell me, if my parents approve it, then will it be okay?”

“Will they approve such a thing, Mike?” the director asked, a thread of cynicism lacing his voice.

“Maybe.”

“And maybe not. And I think that my ‘maybe not’ will win over your ‘maybe.’ Really, will they let their daughter disappear into the same hole that her big brother disappeared into? They did everything to find you, you know that.”

“And then they stopped.”

“Because they realized that they can’t force you to return as long as you are here of your own free will. Mike, how many times have we had this conversation, in one way or another? Aren’t you sick of it already?!”

Mike stood there, staring down at the carpet, like a child sent to the principal’s office. The Skulholt brothers exchanged triumphant glances, not realizing that he had chosen this position only to conceal the fury in his eyes. Mike took a deep breath and forced his fingers to relax.

“Okay,” he murmured after a few minutes, wrapping the word in a deep sigh of resignation.

“And we expect an apology, Mike,” the doctor said in a strident tone. “You’re acting rather ungrateful.”

“I’m sorry,” the boy replied.

The director smiled. “Apology accepted,” he said. “Go and do your exercises, and don’t think about your sister too much, okay? Children don’t die so fast.”

Mike smiled weakly and left the room.

Once downstairs, he fixed his eyes on the faraway gate. Let’s say he would be able to escape, get home, take Becky, and bring her here. They wouldn’t let her stay even one day, those cowards.

Okay, so Plan B. Let’s say he would steal a bit of medical information from their files, escape to his house, and try to heal her himself.

And what would he do afterward? Return to his boring life?

Maybe if he succeeded with Becky, he’d start learning

But without a good high school diploma, he wouldn’t be accepted anywhere respectable, and where would he get a good diploma from?

“You look a bit out of it, Mike.”

“Right.”

“Why?”

“My sister.”

“I hope that what I told you about my nephew coming didn’t open the wound all over again.”

“And if it did?” Mike shrugged. “The wound is there, and so is their dumbness about this. So maybe your nephew will help me get out also.”

Michoel glanced around, alarmed. “Will help you get out? What do you mean?”

“In one of our conversations, I understood that more than you want to heal him, you want contact with the outside world.”

Michoel was quiet for a few long moments. “I don’t remember saying such a thing,” he said slowly, in defeat. “But that’s not exactly right. I’d be very happy if they would heal him. The question is how much I believe in their ability to do it. But please, Mike, have mercy!” He grabbed the young man’s arm. “Don’t tell them what I told you, okay? It’s only because of the absolute faith I showed in their methods that they were convinced to let me invite him here!”

“Of course,” Mike replied, a bit miffed. “Do you think I planned to go and tell that to them?”

“Not with bad intentions,” Michoel explained, weighing his words. “I meant that you should be careful not to blurt something out unintentionally, maybe during one of your sessions with Dr. Skulholt, for example.”

“We hardly speak.” Mike’s face was expressionless.

“I do my mental exercises myself. They’re too busy trying to get new patients here.”

“Who will pay them tons of money, huh?” Michoel muttered. “Don’t ask how much they asked for my nephew.”

“And his parents are ready to pay it?”

“I didn’t even talk to them about it. I signed that I’d pay it all.” His lips curled. “When I get to the point that I can, of course… They think I’m a gold mine.” And that’s the only reason I’m here, he added to himself.

Place the filling mixture into the prepared pie dish.

3. Rinse the mixing bowl, then add in the walnut crumble ingredients. Using your fingers, blend the margarine and flour until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle the crumble on top of the filling mixture in the pie dish.

4. Bake for about 1 hour and 10 minutes until the crumbs are lightly browned and the apples are soft. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

6. Remove from heat and let cool. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and serve.

6. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown. Remove from heat and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Iodine Truth, Facts and Lies

· Your body does not produce iodine, so you must get it from your food. Iodine was added to table salt to reduce the public health threat, but recommendations for a low-salt diet have contributed to a rise in the risk once again

· Roughly 30% of the world is thought to be deficient. Physicians once prescribed drops of Lugol's solution for iodine supplementation, but that fell out of vogue after two physicians misinterpreted scientific data in 1948

· The subsequent addition of competing minerals — fluoride to the water supply and substitution of potassium bromate for potassium iodide in bread and pastry flour — increased the risk of hypothyroidism and iodine insufficiency

· Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, difficulty learning and remembering, difficulty with weight loss, always feeling cold and difficulty getting pregnant

· I recommend you get as much iodine from your food as possible, including iodine-rich organic, grass fed dairy products, organic cranberries, eggs, potatoes and sea vegetables, which have more iodine than any other source

Your body cannot produce iodine, so you must get it from your food. Although iodine deficiency is reemerging as a public health threat, it is completely preventable in the Western world. It is a critically important trace mineral, which means that your body needs it in very small doses.

Although many cells use iodine, your thyroid gland uses what’s available first to produce the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). According to Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, most people in the U.S. get their dietary iodine from iodized salt and milk.

If a person chooses to follow a low-fat, low-salt diet recommended by the American Heart Association3 it drastically reduces the amount of iodine they absorb each day.

This may help explain how iodine deficiency and thyroid conditions have become serious public health concerns. According to the American Thyroid Association, roughly 30% of the world's population is thought to be at risk of deficiency and those in developed countries are increasingly found to be lacking this essential nutrient.

Iodine or Iodide?

Although the words sound similar and you may have used them interchangeably, iodine and iodide are two different compounds. Elemental diatomic iodine (I2) has two iodine atoms bound together. In this form, iodine is highly corrosive

and can damage tissue on contact.

Iodide (I-) is the form of iodine found in nature. It occurs when iodine binds with another element and forms salt. For example, potassium iodide or sodium iodide is iodine bound with potassium or sodium. In this form, it can be used topically or ingested.

According to Dr. Guy Abraham in “The Historical Background of the Iodine Project,” during the first half of the 20th century, physicians used Lugol’s solution as an iodine supplement. Each drop delivered 6.25 mg of elemental iodine, which was 40% iodine and 60% potassium iodide salt. At the time, the recommended intake was 2 to 6 drops per day.

This changed in 1948 when Drs. Jan Wolff and Israel Lyon Chaikoff from the University of California Berkeley published their findings on an animal model during which they administered intraperitoneal injections of iodide. When serum levels of inorganic iodide reached 0.2 m/L they noticed the thyroid gland no longer absorbed radioiodide. According to Abraham, the correct interpretation would have been that the thyroid gland had absorbed a sufficient amount of iodine.

What Killed Iodine?

Despite the results, Wolff and Chaikoff concluded that because the thyroid no longer absorbed the radio iodide, the production of thyroid hormones would be blocked and result in hypothyroidism. However, according to Abraham, the rats did not develop symptoms of hypothyroidism. Since Wolff and Chaikoff could not justify the interpretation, they explained that the rats did not follow “a normal physiological response.”

In 1969, Wolff, working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), defined levels of iodine excess and concluded that anything above 0.2 mg per day was potentially harmful.

Abraham points out that Wolff’s and Chaikoff’s interpretation of the data was incorrect and Wolff’s subsequent extrapolation of the findings to humans without sufficient scientific evidence was “worse.” Abraham went on to write:

“By the 1970s, physicians concluded that one must avoid inorganic, nonradioactive iodine like leprosy, unless it was incorporated into the toxic, organic iodine-containing drugs. Then iodine could be tolerated because iodine could be blamed for the toxicity of these drugs.”

By 1993, the beneficial effects of supplementing with iodine for one year in 1,368 patients had been documented. Yet, Wolff’s opinion prevailed. Further research by Drs. Jorge Flechas and David Brownstein did not reproduce the Wolff-Chaikoff effect in roughly 4,000 patients who received supplementation for as long as three years. In 2005, Abraham wrote that medical fear of iodine had reached:

“... pandemic proportion, is highly contagious, and has wreaked havoc in the practice of medicine and on the U.S. population. More misery and death in the U.S. may have resulted from the Wolff-Chaikoff effect than both World Wars combined.”

Registered dietitian Jennifer Depew talks about her experience using iodine supplementation in her Substack article, “Iodine and an Old Lie, Still Being Spread.” She notes that with supplementation, her fibrocystic pain resolved, and she experienced restored energy and an easier time losing weight.

Common Environmental Contaminants Compete With Iodine

Iodine belongs to a class of chemicals called halogens, along with fluorine, chlorine and bromine. Fluorine has the highest reactivity, followed by chlorine, bromine and then iodine.

When a halogen combines with another element it's called a halide. For example, sodium chloride is a halide ion.

Exposure to these halides can disrupt thyroid function since the halogen is absorbed by the thyroid gland. Researchers have found that with adequate exposure to iodine, the effect of fluoride exposure can be mitigated. Depew notes that in the 1950s fluoride was added to the drinking water and potassium bromate was substituted for potassium iodide in bread and pastry flour, both of which likely have contributed to iodine insufficiency and deficiency.

Increasing numbers of people with hypothyroidism and goiters triggered public health officials to recommend the addition of iodine to table salt. Yet, as has been noted in the past 10 years, the American Heart Association's push for a low-salt diet has had a significant impact on thyroid health.

According to Abraham's data, this may have also influenced the rate of cancer. In a small number of subjects, an iodine-loading test resulted in the excretion of more bromide in women with breast cancer than in normal subjects. Common contaminants that compete with iodine include:

· Bromide — Bromides are known endocrine disruptors found in baked goods, pesticides and plastics, among other sources. Because bromide is a halide, it competes for the same receptors in your thyroid gland and other body areas to capture iodine, thereby inhibiting thyroid hormone production.

· Fluoride — Fluoride has long been known to displace iodine. As cited by the Fluoride Action Network, Chinese researchers "have repeatedly found that an iodine deficiency coupled with fluoride exposure produces a significantly more damaging effect on neurological development than iodine deficiency alone."

· Perchlorate — This is a contaminant found in groundwater across the U.S. and in measurable amounts in milk, fruit and vegetables. Perchlorate blocks iodine uptake and inhibits the production of thyroid hormones, which leads to hypothyroidism.

Iodine Insufficiency Affects Cognition and Much More

Your body needs enough iodine to make thyroid hormones. In addition to the effect low thyroid hormone has on your general health, the thyroid can become enlarged, which is a condition known as goiter. A lack of thyroid hormones is called hypothyroidism, which can trigger intellectual disabilities and developmental issues in infants and children.

When an infant is deprived of thyroid hormones in utero, it can have irreversible effects on the child. Babies born to mothers with hypothyroidism during pregnancy

have a significantly increased risk of lower IQ scores, learning disabilities and neuropsychological impairment. According to the American Thyroid Association, iodine deficiency is “the most common preventable cause of intellectual disabilities in the world.”

Researchers are just beginning to understand the relationship iodine has with more than the thyroid gland. Micronutrient deficiencies and inadequacies are a global health issue. Many of the symptoms of iodine deficiency are related to hypothyroidism, yet as Depew notes, correcting her iodine level led to a reduction in fibrocystic breast symptoms. Symptoms you may be deficient in iodine include:

Fatigue

Muscle weakness

Weight gain

Difficulty losing weight

Difficulty learning and remembering

Hair loss

Dry skin

Always feeling cold

Constipation

Slow heart rate

Difficulty getting pregnant

Heavy or irregular periods

Hoarse voice

Iodine-Rich Foods

According to the National Institutes of Health, the recommended dietary allowance for iodine is 150 micrograms (mcg) for men and women age 14 and older. I always recommend that you get as many nutrients as possible from

the food that you eat, and iodine is no exception. The amount of iodine in your food is directly related to how much is in the soil where the food was grown.

Always choose fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and raw, organic, grass fed dairy. Consider optimizing your iodine absorption by eliminating or significantly reducing your exposure to the common contaminants that compete with iodine. These were bromide, fluoride, nitrates, mercury and perchlorate. Some of the foods that are known to be rich in iodine include:

· Dairy — All dairy is rich in iodine and consuming raw, organic, grass-fed dairy is a healthier option. The iodine content in the dairy can vary depending on the season of the year. According to the National Institutes of Health, 1 cup of nonfat pasteurized milk contains 85 mcg and 1 ounce of pasteurized cheddar cheese contains 15 mcg.

· Cranberries — Cranberries are a rich source of iodine. I suggest you consume fresh, organic cranberries or cranberry juice that is 100% juice with no added sugars. If you have a urinary tract stone or take blood thinning medication like warfarin, it is important to avoid cranberries.

· Eggs — One large egg contains 26 mcg of iodine.

· Potatoes — One medium baked potato with the peel contains 60 mcg of iodine. Potatoes are a heavily sprayed crop, so be sure to purchase organically grown potatoes. Because they are also high in starch, I recommend eating potatoes in moderation.

· Sea Vegetables — One-quarter ounce of dried seaweed may contain more than 4,500 mcg of iodine.

Recap: Mrs. Sternstein remembers how hard it was for her to watch Ahuva being overshadowed by Tehilla’s talents and success. Ahuva comes home late from school with a friend. Tehilla spots Ahuva and Rachelli together.

CHAPTER TWENTY:

“Tehilla! I can’t believe you came!” Faigy’s face shone with an ethereal light. We embraced. I wouldn’t tell her the truth about why I had come. No one took off a whole week of school in the middle of a busy eleventh grade year. Only someone who couldn’t face her classmates.

Faigy’s engagement couldn’t have happened at a better time. It was perfect- an excuse to vacation in Arizona, and a real reason to get away.

Watching Faigy accept warm wishes from the endless stream of neighbors, cousins, and friends, I couldn’t help but notice what a different girl she had become. Just last year, she was a struggling teacher, crying herself to sleep at night. Now, she was confident, poised, and…successful.

I’m not sure why watching her made a lump rise in my throat. Only later, when I was comfortably settled in my hotel room, did I realize what was bothering me. She was personifying what could’ve been my life. My life was also supposed to follow its regular course- elementary, high school, work or seminary, and then marriage.

As soon as one thing went wrong, I was already thrown off the beaten path. I didn’t bother deluding myself into thinking that it was possible for things to run smoothly for me. Which mainstream seminary would accept me? And then, an even darker thought: what kind of nightmare will Shidduchim be for me?

I shuddered at the thought. I quickly replaced the thoughts with an image of Faigy with a glittering tennis bracelet on her wrist.

I was happy for Faigy, really. She had gone through so much, losing her father at such a young age, and growing up in an out-of-town community with no relatives. But watching her look so eidel, so refined…it hurt me. It

reminded me of a little girl with curly brown hair, with a giggle that bounced off the walls and filled the room with light. It reminded me of a girl who was always so adherent to halacha, a girl who refused to buy a shirt that didn’t cover her collarbone properly. That little girl was replaced by a hurting teenager, a teenager who didn’t really stop to think about halacha and dress code as often as she should.

I thought that I would be happier and look prettier like this. I thought that the longer hair, wider collarbone, and coarser laugh would bring joy. Instead, it wreaked havoc on an innocent young girl and corrupted her with foreign values. And I am left to deal with the shadow of what could’ve been.

“Hi Mom!” Pori dropped her bag on the counter and leaned over it to face her mother.

“So, fill me in. What’s up with Ahuva?” Her mother sighed. “I don’t know. She came in with a mystery friend, who left a short while ago. She is in her room, as usual.”

“She didn’t explain why she came home so late or who the girl is?” Pori’s voice rose.

“You know what, Pori?” Laya Sternstein scooped out a perfect scoop of mashed potatoes and paused. “I didn’t even bother asking.”

Pori looked pained. “I wish it didn’t have to be so complicated.”

“Every interaction is complicated. So the least I can say, the better. There isn’t much that I can do without her cooperation.” Laya sprinkled a mixture of sauteed onions and meat on top of the potato scoop and brought it to the table.

“Thanks, Mom. This is so fancy!” Pori took a spoon and began to eat. “Hmmm…this is good.” Pori waited five minutes. Then, she said, “So, how’s Ahuva’s therapy going?” Pori opted for a casual tone. Her mother’s hands trembled as she ladled fresh broccoli soup into a bowl. Carefully setting it in front of her daughter, she answered, “I don’t know.”

“She needs help.” Pori watched the smoke unfurl over her soup.

“She needs help, but help can only happen

when she wants help. So far, the sessions are proving to be a total waste of time. Yes, the pulling may get a bit better, but the progress really lies in her willpower. Right now, Ahuva doesn’t care to get better, or at least she pretends not to care.”

It was a mess, really. But trichotillomania was treatable, at least according to what she had read up about it. Pori was worried about her sister, and she had tried to find out more about her condition. She had even found a therapist who specialized in treating patients suffering from trichotillomania. After all that effort, it was hard to accept that the results weren’t an instant cure, or at least some sort of advancement. Before long, it would become very noticeable. Before long, it would become impossible for her classmates not to notice. And Pori wasn’t sure that Ahuva would survive the shame.

She could already see the scene in her mind’s eye: Ahuva, refusing to get out of bed. Ahuva, refusing to leave the house. Ahuva, with a thin ponytail of hair that would become thinner and thinner, and then disappear.

“I’m going to talk to her,” she announced resolutely, putting down her spoon. “This is ridiculous.”

Her mother watched her sadly. “You can try,” she murmured. “You can always try.”

Surrounded by palm trees and the sun’s embrace, it was easy to forget how complicated life was. I lay back and smiled. My mother had dropped me off at the park, after asking ten times if I was sure that I was okay being on my own.

It was nice to have some time for myself. It was even nicer to have some time for myself in such a dazzling location. Arizona was a vacation made-to-order, and it came just in time to save me from a major showdown in school. I closed my eyes tightly and willed the image of Rachelli and Ahuva together to go away.

But even a plane ride away, the image stung. There could have been a hundred different reasons for their conversation, but for me, it was over. I had lost my trust in people over and over again. This was the final straw.

From now on, no one was worthy of my trust.

Perhaps it was the hot sun on my back, or maybe it was the way that the palm trees gently swayed in the soft breeze, but I felt myself relax completely. But I am worthy of my own trust. Yes, I made mistakes. Yes, I am not that innocent little girl that I wish I could be. But I can be my own hero. I can rise above the most challenging circumstances. One day, I will look back and be proud of how far I have come. Just because my path isn’t mainstream, just because my journey has had more bumps in the road than a typical teenager, that doesn’t mean that I cannot reach the same beautiful destination. And finally, when my mother picked me up in the car that she had rented for our stay in Arizona, I felt ready to share my thoughts with my mother. Because no matter how many friends came and went, my mother was always there to listen.

“The destination is the same,” Ma agreed, concentrating on the turning roads. “But you will feel a much greater sense of satisfaction upon reaching it. When you graduate from high school, it will be with the knowledge that you overcame hurdles that most girls your age aren’t forced to fight against. But you had to. So the feeling of reaching the destination will be far greater and far more fulfilling than those who reached it naturally.”

“Aaaaahhh!” I shrieked as my mother made a sharp turn on the narrow road. The world spun around us as we turned and twisted, and finally, we breathed as the car slowed down. Ma laughed and I joined her. Her impassionate speech had been forgotten by the Arizonian roads that were infamous for its treacherous turns.

I think that we were both relieved for the light laughter that diffused the intensity of our conversation. Regardless, I felt something inside of me shift.

My mother. Come what may, I had my mother at my side. I was ready to go back home and face whatever would happen. Because I knew that I would have a cheerleader, cheering me on no matter what. She would cheer me on, even if I was marching to my own tune, a very different tune than the one that she had dreamed of and hoped for me.

“Huvs, it’s your own mother that we are talking about here!”

Ahuva’s eyes were expressionless. Her hair was matted around her face, and it looked like she had been crying. “You can’t just disappear and then expect everyone around you not to worry!” Pori let out an exasperated sigh.

“Tell me!” she cried. When that generated no response, she sat down on her sister’s bed, grabbed onto her shoulders, and shook her hard. “Hello! Wake up! I am here, and we need to talk!”

“Can you leave?” Ahuva’s voice was lifeless. “No.” Pori glared at her. “Ahuva, this is insane! Mom was petrified, I came rushing home, and I am so glad that you are safe…but are you okay? Why can’t you just talk? Why can’t you just explain?”

Pori stood. “Why can’t you just be normal?” As soon as the words left her lips, she regretted it. It wasn’t fair to judge. After all, Pori had experienced a very different upbringing than the one her sister had.

Her childhood years had been painted in color, light, and endless love. All that had ended abruptly when the accident happened. But Pori had already been a teenager then. And by the time they moved to America, all she had to do was transition to a new high school in New York. With her charming personality, it hadn’t taken much to seamlessly adjust to her new class.

Ahuva had a very different story. It wasn’t fair to call her not normal. After all, normal was pretty relative, wasn’t it?

The scene that was unfolding frightened Pori. Ahuva got up, and her body was shaking with anger. With all of the energy that she had, she physically pushed her sister out of her room, her eyes wild.

When the door slammed shut, Pori wanted to cry. But she couldn’t. She had to be strong. Because her mother was standing at the bottom of the staircase, a pained expression on her face.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AGood question. Welcome to the terminology of “skinny fat”. “Skinny fat” doesn’t have a standardized definition and isn’t a medical term, so different people use the term in various ways. It’s usually used to refer to less muscle tone and strength as well as a relatively high body fat percentage, despite having a “normal” BMI. This term is often used negatively to describe somebody who isn’t physically fit. Somebody who is considered “skinny fat” may have a large amount of visceral fat and may not have much muscle definition. When you eat food high in sugar, your blood sugar rises and your body produces insulin to shuttle the sugar into fat and muscle cells for storage. Chronically elevated insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance, which happens when your body stops responding to insulin. Insulin resistance is linked to increased body fat, especially around your midsection. That being said, yes, one can be thin, but that does not mean that they are healthy. Not having good sleeping habits and eating poorly, most likely will catch up with you in your later years. It’s also important to mention that many of us are obsessed with the number on the scale. However, the truth is, that the scale cannot tell you if it is measuring water weight, fat, or muscle. In fact, the scale can be downright misleading to thin people, since you may think that you don’t need to change your lifestyle around

since your weight is in line with what the “charts” say. Additionally, as Yidden, Hashem gave us a mitzvah of 'venishmartem'. We must prioritize giving care to the vessel of our soul.

That being said, how can we slowly incorporate healthier lifestyle habits?

Start with breakfast: No matter what happened the night before, start the day with a solid breakfast (just a cup of coffee doesn't count). The best breakfasts contain a mix of protein and carbohydrates: Think steel-cut oatmeal, yogurt and fruit, or egg whites and mixed vegetables. And there's yummy news if it's sweets you crave, you might be able to get away with a bit of chocolate or pastry in the morning as long as you make it part of a balanced meal and keep your portion sizes small.

Build exercise into your day so that you build up your muscle mass.

1. Start drinking water- Swap your usual soda or sugary juice for water you’ll start to feel better. Drinking water consistently aids weight loss in both adults and teens because it fills you up and spares you the calories from other beverage choices. Sometimes your body misinterprets thirst for hunger, so while you may feel hungry, you’re actually thirsty.

2. Add fiber and nutrients into

your diet- When you eat, think not only about the calories you’re about to consume but also about the quality of the calories. Are they nothing but sugar, or do they also contain essential nutrients, such as protein, fiber, and antioxidants?

3. When it comes to midafternoon snacking, as yourself “Am I really hungry?” and “What am I hungry for?” Try to identify what you are really feeling and then take it from there. If you want to snack, opt for a healthy snack such as fruit or nuts, instead of cake or sweets.

4. Sleep! Evidence is mounting that chronic sleep deprivation is a major reason for weight gain. In research published in the journal Circulation, a small group of men and women deprived of just an hour of sleep for eight days in a row ate an extra 550 calories a day, an amount that can translate to a weight gain of a pound in just one week (and the extra hour awake didn’t use up any extra calories). Blood tests showed increases in ghrelin, the hormone linked to hunger, and decreases in leptin, the hormone that tells you that you feel full. Aim to sleep between 7-9 hours per night.

These documents help explain your loan in detail, but they can sometimes seem like they're written in another language! Don't fret, we're here to translate and break down what these papers mean.

Loan Application

First there is the loan application; this will include the following:

Personal Information: In this section, you share your basic information. You provide your full name, address, and social security number. This is much like giving a formal introduction of who you are. This information allows the lender to verify your identity and check your credit history.

Employment and Income Information: Here, you're required to give details about your work and your earnings. This part shows the lender that you have a steady income, which helps assure them that you have the ability to repay the loan.

Loan Amount and Purpose: This is where you state how much money you wish to borrow and explain what you intend to use it for It's like outlining the plans for a project It helps the lender understand your financial needs

Asset and Liability Information: In this section, you disclose your financial status You list what you own (assets) such as savings, properties, or investments, and what you owe (liabilities) like other loans or credit card debts It's similar to taking inventory of what you have and what you owe

Loan Estimate

Think of the Loan Estimate (LE) as a sneak peek of your loan

Within three days of applying for a loan, you get this document It shows the important details like the loan amount, interest rate, monthly payment It also provides an estimate of what the closing costs will be During the loan application process, you might get a revised Loan Estimate sent if there are changes to your loan details, for example, when you lock in your rate or request a change in the loan amount. It's providing an update to you about your loan when something important changes.

Inever thought a day would come when I would actually try to communicate with you via a newspaper. But after trying to get across my message through more private methods, I am trying this approach as a last, desperate, resort.

Our relationship has always been a most unique one. Even at times and circumstances when sibling rivalry should have driven us apart, we remained so very close, my hero, the person I admired most in life.

From teaching me how to drive a bike, to learning with me whenever Tatty was away traveling on business, to after my chasunah, helping me find a kollel and eventually a job, you were always there for me.

You helped buy my house, and when you purchased a bungalow in the Catskills, you encouraged me to purchase one right next door to yours.

This is why what happened to our relationship during the last few years is so devastating to me. Indeed, we haven’t fought, though frankly I sometimes wish we did. Because at least when two people fight than there is an exhibition of emotion, a recognition that both parties are real, live human beings with hearts and feelings.

This dramatic change is painfully apparent the entire year but especially so in these summer months. How I long for those summer nights when we sat on the porch, spending hour after hour in meaningful conversation.

Sometimes we reminisced about the past but mostly we shared our dreams and hopes for the future.

We sit there, but we might as well be miles apart. It isn’t only that your eyes rarely rise from the little screen on your handheld device, although that is bad enough. Your entire personality has changed.

Something within you has become extinguished. That wonderful, warm engag-

ing personality is gone, replaced with an unrecognizable, lackluster stranger. Your passion and drive has vanished, replaced by a form of emotional hibernation.

Yes, I know that you got approval from the vaad of your children’s mosdos. I know that you told them that you have a legitimate Parnassah reason to own such a device. Yes, I know you have a filter.

But what I also know – and see – is how everything that once was most important to you, now barely matters. Nowadays, the only thing that counts to you is what’s on that little screen.

I watch how you barely interact with your children, and how they long in vain for your affection. They once were your pride and joy, now you barely notice them.

I watch how your warmth for mitzvos has all but evaporated, and while you still attend the nightly shiur, your interest in learning has waned as well.

I tired talking to you about it, at first tactfully, then bluntly. But my words didn’t penetrate. So I am using this forum to issue a desperate plea to you: Please don’t delude yourself any longer.

It isn’t that we don’t want to share you with a smartphone. It is that the smartphone usage leaves no room for us. Please don’t let this little device steal you from your adoring family. We implore you, get rid of the device and come back to those who really love you.

“Sixty gold coins?” the women gasped. “For that amount we don’t need you, we could ask Hashem to help us.”

Then R’ Yisroel smiled and said, “Now I could help you. Now that you have put your trust in Hashem, I can also help you. But as long as you thought that only I could find your money, I was helpless. Any exposed part of the body — including the earlobes, scalp and lips — can burn. Even covered areas can burn. The eyes, which are extremely sensitive to the sun’s UV light, also can burn.

Sunburn symptoms can include:

• Inflamed skin, which looks pink or red on white skin

• Skin that feels warm or hot to the touch

• Pain, tenderness and itching

• Swelling

• Small, fluid-filled blisters, which may break

• Headache, fever, nausea and fatigue, if the sunburn is severe

Within a few days, the body may start to heal itself by peeling the damaged skin’s top layer. A bad sunburn may take several days to heal. Any lingering changes in skin color usually go away with time.

When to see a doctor

See your healthcare provider if you:

Develop large blisters

Develop blisters on the face, hands or genitals

Experience severe swelling of the affected area

Show signs of infection, such as blisters with pus or streaks

Experience worsening pain, headache, confusion, nausea, fever or chills

Get worse despite at-home care

Have eye pain or vision changes

Seek immediate medical care if you are sunburned and experience:

• A fever over 100.0F

• Confusion

• An infection

• Dehydration

• Cold skin, dizziness or faintness

you’re in the sun. Seek shade when possible.

Use sunscreen often and generously. Use water-resistant, broadspectrum lip balm and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. Broad-spectrum products offer protection against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. No sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UVB rays.

About 30 minutes before going outdoors, generously apply your sunscreen to clean, dry skin. Use at least 2 tablespoons of sunscreen, or 1 ounce, to cover all surfaces of the exposed skin, except the eyelids. If you’re using spray sunscreen, spray it into your hands and then rub it into the skin. This helps avoid inhaling the product. Don’t use a spray product while smoking or near an open flame.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all sunscreen to retain its original strength for at least three years. Check sunscreen labels for directions on storing and expiration dates. Throw away sunscreen if it’s expired or more than three years old.

Protect babies and toddlers.

Protect babies and toddlers from sunburn with brimmed hats and lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs. Keep them cool, hydrated and out of direct sunlight. When that’s not possible, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to the face and back of the hands. The American Academy of Dermatology and the FDA don’t suggest sunscreen for children under 6 months.

• You can get sunburned on cool or cloudy days.

• While on a boat the water reflects the sunlight back onto your skin and will increase the risk of sunburn

• If you develop fluid-filled blisters do not try to break it as the open skin will increase the chance or infections.

“You know, music has a real impact on your neshama,” Pessy was saying fervently. She and Cheli lapsed into a conversation about music’s effect on a person’s emotions and if that was why it could bring a person to teshuvah, settling in together in the front of the minivan.

Meanwhile, in the backseat, Faigy, Mimi, and Hindy were discussing their individual camp song preferences, with Mimi attempting to show them the motions her friends had come up with for the camp songs being taught in camp that year, all while still belted in her seatbelt.

They weren’t as animated as they were when they spoke to their friends, whom they knew so much better than they knew their sisters. But their sisters were all they had right now. ***

Nights were harder than the days, with the girls edgy and anxious to call their friends in camp for updates. Devorah had limited the phone calls they could make to friends, which meant that there were many restless and friendless nights.

Some nights they worked on a thousandpiece puzzle, with the desultory conversation that evolved from being focused on another task. Other nights she challenged them to bake dobosh torte together, despite them hardly ever spending time in the kitchen in their lives. That one had ended with Mimi starting a flour fight, and Faigy crying as she tried to get all the flour out of her thick, frizzy hair. Somewhat of a flop.

One night she even asked the lifeguard to open the pool for a night swim, with music playing from speakers in the pool. Even Cheli, her least athletic daughter, had enjoyed that night swim. They had races that left all of them panting, and Mimi taught all of them some water aerobics. It was pure, healthy, wholesome fun, and Devorah saw her dreams materializing as her daughters giggled together. Of course, there was plenty of arguing as they decided on the rules of the games and couldn’t seem to come to a meeting of opinions. Devorah chalked it up to a learning experience.

Shabbos afternoons, Pessy would give a Pirkei Avos shiur. With some gentle nudging from Devorah, she’d learned how to turn it into a discussion that all her sisters could take part in.

“It’s amazing how you can think someone doesn’t have so much depth at all, and really she thinks a lot about life,” Pessy confided in her mother one day after Mimi had spent an hour arguing against the points she’d made in her shiur. Devorah just smiled.

True, they still were all very different. It was never easy to make them all happy. What made some of them light up, like taking a hike in the woods and roasting marshmallows, made others grumpy and miserable. And nothing was as much fun without their usual company-their friends.

Devorah made sure to give them plenty of their own space so they could enjoy their summer in their own way. For Faigy, that meant enough time to curl up on their egg chair with a book from the veritable library she’d brought along. For Cheli, it meant Devorah making herself available to listen to all the muses that she normally shared with her friends which her sisters still didn’t always have patience listening to.

For Mimi, it meant letting her drive the golf cart that her father used to get around in the bungalow colony in the empty fields. For Hindy, it meant letting her use Devorah’s professional camera to practice her photography skills and create collages from the pictures she took. Slowly but surely, with her careful adjusting of the conditions, her experiment was seeing unexpected results. Slowly, her daughters discovered that they had a lot more in common than they’d ever thought they’d had. Little things like Hindy reading a book Faigy recommended as a favorite and actually enjoying the read. Pessy and Cheli discovering a shared love of analyzing life, and developing the patience to listen to the other’s theses. Mimi and Hindy energetically exercising to the same favorite exercise CDs.

One by one, her daughters admitted to her that their sisters were more interesting than they’d thought, and that they could sometimes have more fun together than with their friends. As they spent more time together, they learned not only what each other’s preferences were, but also how to take those preferences into account.

And after three weeks of vacation had slipped through their fingers, Devorah didn’t have to declare her experiment a success.

Shyly and reluctantly, her daughters did it for her, unanimously agreeing on the results of the experiment.

Faigy, Hindy, and Cheli appeared in the kitchen doorway together.

“It’s not just the fun that they’re having,” Cheli said. “I really miss my friends, Mommy.” There was an edge of tears in her voice. Sensitive Cheli’s friends were really her soulmates.

“Same here!” Faigy said fervently. Faigy was a quiet thinker, and most of her sisters didn’t have patience to wait for her to think before she spoke.

Five miserable faces stared at their mother. After months of the girls’ doomsaying, Devorah was nearly immune. Especially since, at least, they were all being miserable together.

“You can all have a pity party together, girls,” Devorah invited generously as she turned on the smoothie maker. “I’ll serve you some strawberry smoothies to go with it.”

Pessy and Mimi looked at each other warily. Faigy, Hindy, and Cheli looked resigned.

Devorah busied herself whipping the smoothies to perfection. She remembered the explosions that had followed her announcement that none of her girls were going to be allowed to go to camp during the first half of the summer that year. Every one of them would be coming along to the Linowitz bungalow, and they would need to plan activities to spend their time together exclusively with their sisters. No working with friends or hanging out with other girls their age. Devorah had decided it was high time for some family bonding time.

Despite all their protests that they had nothing in common with their sisters and that they would be miserable spending time together, Devorah had stuck to her guns.

As a reward, she’d told them that if all worked out well, she would take them on a family vacation to another state for the last week of their vacation. They would have to make a decision together about where to go, though.

“Yum, Mommy,” Faigy said appreciatively as she took a sip of her smoothie. “It’s totally heaven.”

Devorah looked at her five teenagers finally sitting around the table together, over a leisurely breakfast, and her heart swelled. This was what she’d done it for.

Pessy, her eighteen-year-old kallah moid. Mimi, her irrepressible sixteen-year-old. Faigy, her serious, bookish fifteen-year-old. Hindy, her bouncy fourteen-year-old. And last but not least, Cheli, her highly intuitive thirteenyear-old.

Five girls, five years apart. When they’d been little, they’d played together so nicely. Devorah had reveled in her dreams of a band of sisters closer than close, who shared confidences deep into the night, spent Sundays together shopping, and were there for each other through thick and thin.

Instead, as her daughters entered elementary school one by one, they all began spending more and more time of their waking hours in their friends’ company. They all had wonderful friends, which Devorah was grateful for. But slowly, her daughters had become strangers to each other. They wouldn’t think of shopping with their sisters in a million years, and never spent time with each other except if they were forced to.

It was a good thing her daughters were creative, each in their own way, because the activity roster they’d designed could put any camp to shame.

For the first day of activities, Mimi had suggested ice-skating “to break the ice,” (Devorah had warned her that she’d better not mean that seriously,) and Faigy had done research on a milchig restaurant in the neighborhood where they could go for a fancy first-day lunch. Devorah was the official camp chauffeur for the summer, so her job had been to coordinate the schedules.

Devorah twisted in her seat to get a look at the backseat of the car, where her five daughters were alternately engrossed in a book, listening to their MP3 player, saying Tehillim, or sleeping.

She sighed.

Her husband Heshy, sitting in the driver’s seat with his eyes focused on the road, chuckled softly.

“What’s the sigh all about?”

Devorah sighed yet again. “I guess I was hoping they would be schmoozing together, like my dream of the sisters they could be.” she responded in a low tone, so her daughters who were still conscious wouldn’t hear her Heshy’s smile faded. “I don’t know why it bothers you that much. They’re just regular teenagers.”

“I don’t know myself why it bothers me so much,” Devorah admitted. “I just know that I want them to get to spend more time together Every time I see them ignoring each other, I feel like I have to do something about it.”

“Well, you’re definitely doing something about it now,” Heshy said, jerking his thumb toward the quiet backseat.

Devorah perked up slightly at that. “Yeah, I guess you can call this summer an experiment. If it works out, I’ll know it was all worth it. If this flops, though-” she shrugged. “I can probably give up my dreams of ever getting through to them.”

Pessy was up before her mother, as usual.

Devorah tiptoed into the kitchen at seven a.m. so as not to wake her five sleeping beauties. It was the very first night that all of them had slept together in one room.

Make that four, she amended when she saw Pessy swaying gently over her siddur out on the picnic table in front of the bungalow. Of course, she could have assumed Pessy would be up with the dawn, to daven before her sisters could ruin her concentration with their raucous presence.

As soon as Pessy noticed her mother peeking through the window, she closed her siddur gently and gave it a kiss.

“Can I help you make breakfast, Mommy?” she asked solicitously as she came through the screen door

“Sure,” Devorah said. “I was thinking of making

some smoothies, to start off the first day of our Linowitz camp with a bang!”

The slightest expression of disapproval flitted over Pessy’s face, but she quickly brushed it away. “Sure, Mommy,” she said instead.

Devorah suppressed a grimace. Her behavior was so cliché for a seminary girl, Devorah could practically write the script for her. And all this without even going to Eretz Yisrael for seminary-Pessy had stayed home and attended the local seminary instead.

It was her friends’ influence, the new ones she’d made in seminary and her high school friends who had gone to seminary in Eretz Yisrael. Pessy had stayed up every night until the wee hours of the morning, talking to her friends, discussing hashkafa and their idealistic dreams.

Devorah wasn’t at all opposed to Pessy’s growth, but she wished it didn’t mean that her eldest daughter had to close herself off in a bubble with her friends.

“I was thinking,” Pessy said, “of offering Mrs. Galinsky that I would take her over doing shiur for the day camp here sometimes. What do you think, Mommy?”

“One second,” Devorah said. “This summer is Camp Linowitz. It’s family time! Not shiur time.”

Pessy looked a little disappointed. “Maybe I can give shiur to the family then. You know, before we start all the stam fun.”

“No way,” Mimi moaned, walking into the kitchen with tousled hair and a rumpled nightgown. “See, Ma? I told you that this whole staying home situation is going to be a major mega disaster. Pessy wants to play teacher on us!” She shook her mane of auburn curls in disgust, grabbing a bag of Bissli from the cabinet and tearing it open.

Pessy’s lips pursed in disapproval.

“Hey, look, we’re already here,” Devorah said lightly. “None of you are getting into camp anymore anyway. So we might as well try to enjoy ourselves, right?”

“As if we can enjoy ourselves when we know we’re so left out of camp,” Raizy shouted hoarsely from the bedroom.

“Yeah,” Mimi said. “I totally couldn’t fall asleep last night. Ma, do you chap that like every single one of my friends was cheering away last night, watching a smashing breakout, and I’m the nebach who’s not even allowed to talk to them every day? It’s so pathetic.”
