Recap: Tehilla’s relationship with her cousin Faigy improves when they have a meaningful conversation late at night. They wake up late after pulling an all-nighter, and Chava Kaplan jumps in to save Faigy by substituting at Faigy’s school. After a disastrous day, she insists on an honest conversation with her daughter, Tehilla. Faigy remembers her real father and how young she was when he passed away. Her most difficult student confides in her and she finally feels like her career as a teacher has potential.
Faigy’s eyes were round as she read the scrawled, handwritten message on the sticky note. Can we talk after class today? -Bella The same sensation spread over her- she was worth something. Her opinion and advice mattered. She wasn’t just a nameless, faceless teacher trying to jumpstart her career. She was making an impact.
As soon as the dismissal bell rang, she motioned to Bella. “How about we walk home today?” she asked. “I am walking down the avenue, and the weather is nice.” Remembering that she was the adult here, she added, “Your Mom lets you walk home, right?”
At Bella’s nod, she began walking down the stairs with her. Nodding to the front desk secretary in the copy machine room, she couldn’t help feeling super-important. She wasn’t just going home from school after a disastrous day, she was helping her student on the way home.
Like an expert, she waited for Bella to open up. She didn’t speak as they walked down the block and crossed the street at the corner. Passing the ice cream store on the way home, she had the sudden idea to treat Bella with a big cup of ice cream sundae- and some impromptu TLC.
“Hey!” Bella cried, when she noticed where her teacher was leading her. “You don’t say… I mean, I have no cash on me.”
Faigy smiled. “It’s on me. I am treating you because you are my favorite student.”
Bella laughed, and Faigy savored the feeling of creating laughter through pain. “Teachers
shouldn’t have favorites.”
Had Bella said that a month ago, her voice would have oozed sarcasm. She would’ve shouted it across the room, inciting her friends to join the fight. Now, with careful and tender care from her beloved teacher, her voice was light and her comment was intended as a joke. Bella and Faigy enjoyed their sundaes when the sound of angry, clicking heels interrupted their comfortable conversation. They both looked up in the direction of the furious footsteps. Right there, facing them, was one angry parent, eyes shooting sparks, accusing the teacher who was caught red-handed. That’s when Faigy realized that her little nurturing had gone just a little too far.
“I see we have a nice little tete a tete.” Bella’s mom’s voice was chilling.
Faigy felt shivers going down her spine. “We just made a stop. Let’s go, Bella. You can go home with your Mom.”
“Not so fast, my dear.” Her tone was condescending and dripped disdain when she said, “Bella is going home, and so are you. Don’t even dream of touching my daughter. I will make sure that your career as a teacher is over. Not only for now, but forever.”
And just like that, Faigy watched her stalk off with her daughter. ***
“There is only two months left to the school year.”
Chava smiled at her niece and picked up a frilly top. “Thank goodness. What a year this was! Do you like this?”
Faigy laughed. “You’re forgetting my Arizonian roots. Anything too frilly isn’t practical. And anything with no color isn’t wearable.”
Tehilla had chosen to stay home. Again. Chava had felt a glimmer of something close to hope when she found Tehilla taking a sudden interest in Faigy. But as quickly as that began, it faded away before she could even comment on it.
Tehilla will never be Faigy. Chava’s thought filled her guilt. You can’t compare people. Everyone has different circumstances, different personalities, different lives. You have a wonderful daughter. Appreciate her!
She was tempted to mention something to her niece along the lines of admiration, but instead, she picked up a flowery dress that she would never dream of purchasing and said, “How about this?” ***
It was a weird feeling, to ditch school. Funny that it still felt weird, even after doing it so many times. But today, I rationalized, today I had a real reason. Today, I was going to follow Faigy.
I had tossed and turned all night, and came to a conclusion as the sky painted my window in a brilliant hue of purples and pinks. The chirping of the birds somehow strengthened and added equilibrium to my resolution. It didn’t really make sense because chirping birds have nothing to do with following Faigy, but my tired brain told made the unlikely connection, and so, I signed and sealed my resolution and was determined to follow through.
“Bye, Ma!” I called as I stepped out. Instead of going to school, I waited a block away. My heart pounded wildly as I waited at the corner. What if Ma decided to go out shopping now? What if a neighbor spotted me? I breathed heavily. I finally decided to check into the library and come back to this spot in a few hours, when I knew Faigy supposedly left to her teaching job. Some three hours later, when Faigy’s figure appeared at the corner of my peripheral vision, I discreetly slid a block’s distance away and began to follow her. It took exactly one minute and ten seconds of following to confirm my suspicions: Faigy wasn’t going to school. The mystery hung mid-air, filling me a curious and refreshing sensation: Why? The possibilities were endless. Was she fired? Did she quit? Was she simply taking a week off? But why? Why didn’t she tell my mother or her mother about this?
Most of all, why did I even care about the whereabouts of a cousin that I was determined not to care about? Why was this bothering me so much- so much, that I took a full day off from school and a whole lot of risks- to discover what was going on with the cousin that I wasn’t friends with? ***
“Faigy?” It was Abba on the phone. “I am just wondering how all of those students are doing. We haven’t heard about them in a while, you know.”
“The usual,” she said vaguely.
“Did you start thinking about next year?”
“Hmmm… Not sure what is available in Arizona, you know.”
“Of course I know! Faigy, you can get a job in our Bais Yaakov here.”
“I don’t call that teaching. The classes are what, ten girls per grade?” What she left unsaid was, I don’t want to work for my step-father. I am not even sure that I want to teach ever again.
“Think about it. Now that the year is slowly drawing to a close, I am doing the hiring for the upcoming year. I can’t think of a better hire than you,” he concluded warmly.
Faigy held her phone in her hand and stared at it. she shook her head. I can’t think of a better hire than you. How ironic, Abba, how ironic that this particular hire is currently out of a job. How ironic that the idealistic teacher has gone up in smoke. How ironic that the most capable and talented student is currently unemployed and roaming the very streets that you left behind so many years ago. ***
“Pori, I can’t do this.” Ahuva’s hands shook. She put down the phone and toyed with her necklace.
“Oh yes, you can. It’s now or never.” Pori sat down her sister and gently took the heart shaped necklace pendant that Ahuva was toying with. She clicked it open to reveal two smiling faces.
“Please. Stop.” There was a hard edge to Ahuva’s voice.
“Stop what? Helping you face reality?”
“Those were better times.” Ahuva closed the pendant with a gentle click.
“You can have them back,” Pori said. “You just have to be willing to go there.”
“She’s right, Tehilla. I ruined her chances of attending a mainstream high school, how can I also ruin her high school experience?”
Pori held up her hand. “Whoa. Let’s backtrack here: You ruined what?”
“Her chances of attending a mainstream Bais Yaakov High School.” Ahuva enunciated the words with practiced precision. There was no use arguing fact.
“Ahuva, just because Tehilla decided so, doesn’t make it fact. How, pray tell, did you ruin her chances?”
“I..I..don’t know…rumors…” Ahuva was hit with the feeling of a practiced belief, a belief formed after so many hours of rumination… disintegrating into thin air.
“Huvs, you were not the one to start or spread that nonsense. For all practical purposes, you still don’t have proof of it being anyone related to you. So my advice? Move on. Some people aren’t worth losing sleep over.”
“Pori, Tehilla is worth losing sleep over. Don’t you see?” her voice cracked, “Can’t you try to see it like I do for just one moment?”
Pori gave her a long and hard stare. “No. I cannot. Yes, Tehilla found a convenient scapegoat by blaming you for her problems. But problems don’t just spring up in the face of rumors. Problems come first. So stop letting her make you feel bad. Especially since she discarded you like a piece of garbage and never bothered giving you the benefit of the doubt.”
Ahuva just looked at the floor. Pori continued, “I speak the truth. I know the truth hurts, but if something, it is Tehilla who betrayed you in the end.” ***
Bnos Batsheva, here we come. Summer was over, and so was tenth grade. Eleventh grade was here, and I couldn’t have been more prepared. It was another year of daily walks to school with Rachelli. It was another year of trips, iced coffees, plays, acai bowls, and hashkafa classes.
I pushed the last thought out of my head. But this year, all that will change. Ahuva is coming. I was grateful that Rachelli was at my side- the perfect distraction.
“I hope we get Mrs. Burnstein,” I told Rachelli. “She is the best writing teacher ever.”
“And I hope you plan on completing those notorious essays that she is famous for!”
Rachelli’s laugh filled the air for a moment, and then faded away as we stepped into the familiar
doors of our school.
“Welcome in, we missed you while you’re out!” We smiled at the welcome back keychain that a twelfth grade G.O. president handed us as we passed.
The smile faded almost immediately when I spotted her. There was no turning back. Ahuva Sternstein was back in my life.
“How was your day?” Mrs. Sternstein smiled at her daughter. “Better or worse than you thought?”
“Okay.” Ahuva slung her bag off her shoulders and walked into the kitchen.
“Hey.” There was a twinkle in her mother’s eyes. “Why do you think I made supper? Today, we celebrate! I have reservations at the steakhouse. For me, you, and Pori.”
Ahuva smiled, a warm feeling washing over her. “Thanks! That’s so nice!” She bit her lip. “And Abba? Is he coming?”
Mrs. Sternstein flashed a smile, her teeth glinting in the afternoon sun that streamed in through the windows.
“He is backed up at work. We’ll order something for Abba and bring it home.”
A half hour later, under the influence of dimmed lighting and tinkling glasses, Ahuva was able to pretend that everything was perfect.
“Pori, we didn’t hear about your day! Something tells me that the ninth grade superstar teacher has a lot to say,” Mrs. Sternstein said proudly, nimbly cutting the large steak with the steak knife the waiter offered.
“The usual, y’know. Cute giggly ninth graders. This year, it looks like I got a pretty conscientious grade. Not bad.” Pori dipped a piece of bread into the garlic oil in front of it. “Mmmm, this is good.”
“Pori, the girls mentioned something about you today. They spoke about you with such respect and admiration, it was hard to keep quiet about you being my sister!” Tehilla laughed and coated the gnocchi in the creamy sauce it came with.
“Speaking of the girls,” Mrs. Sternstein said, “Tell me, Ahuva, how are they?”
Ahuva smiled. “Okay, I guess. I mean, I hardly really got to speak to them past basic introduction.” She poked her fork into the cute little burger buns on the side of her plate, and purposely gazed at her food.
“You know what I mean, dear,” her mother’s tone left no room for argument. “How was your first day with Tehilla?”

RECIPES, STYLING
Chock full of flavors and textures, these eggplant boats are delicious served both with cheese or without.
INGREDIENTS:
2 large eggplants (about 1 pound each)
2 tablespoons oil
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 small tomatoes, diced
1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
⅓ cup pitted olives, quartered
½ cup chopped, fresh parsley or 1 cube frozen parsley
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
¾ cup crumbled feta cheese and /or shredded mozzarella
cheese- optional for dairy
Chopped fresh dill and oregano, for garnish
1. Preheat oven to 400° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Cut each eggplant in half lengthwise. Using a spoon, scoop out the flesh from the halves, leaving about 1/2inch border on the sides and bottoms. Coarsely chop the flesh and lay flat on a baking sheet, in a single layer. Lightly sprinkle with salt and set aside.
3. Spray the insides of the eggplant shells with cooking spray. Place the shells, cut-side up, on the prepared baking sheet and roast until tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
4. While the eggplant roasts, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until softened for about 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic, tomato paste, salt and pepper, and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 1 minute.
5. Add the tomatoes, bell peppers, olives, and the reserved chopped eggplant; cook, stirring occasionally, until the eggplant is tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in the parsley and balsamic vinegar.
6. Divide the filling evenly among the eggplant shells.
7. For dairy: top each eggplant boat with 3 tablespoons feta and/or mozzarella cheese. Broil until the cheese is melted and golden, 6 to 8 minutes.
8. For parve: Drizzle tahini dressing over each eggplant boat, then garnish with fresh herbs.
TAHINI DRIZZLE:
½ cup well-stirred tahini
1 tablespoon lemon juice
¾ teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 garlic clove, crushed
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
¼ cup water (or more)
DIRECTIONS:
In a small container or jar, combine the tahini, lemon juice, crushed red pepper, garlic clove, and water, and shake well until smooth. If the consistency is too thick, add more water until smooth.
YOM TOV TIP: Rewarm the roasted eggplant in an oven,warming drawer, or hot plate before the sueda. Top with tahini sauce and garnish, right before serving.

In this short article, I will discuss the following questions:
1) What is stuttering?
2) Why do people stutter?
3) What to expect from, and what is the goal, in stuttering treatment?
What is stuttering?
Stuttering is a speech disorder that affects communication. On the outside, to the typical listener, speech fluency seems to be the most affected by stuttering. When we talk about fluency, we mean the rate, rhythm, continuity and smoothness of speech. On the inside, however, to the speaker who stutterers, the fear of tensing/blocking is usually mostly on their mind. Guilt and shame often have a tremendous impact on stuttering, and as we will see, they are one of the perpetuating factors in stuttering.
When stuttering, the speech muscles tense up, and produce involuntary extra movements that disrupt the rhythm of speech by producing repetitions (mo… mo… mo… mother), prolongations (mmmmother - wwwwhen) and blocks (my name is ……... Ari). A person who stutters (PWS) can experience effortful speech, where it seems like he is trying too hard to speak. The key word in this discussion is ‘involuntary’. It is important to realize that these disruptions are unwanted by the person who stutters (PWS), and he usually feels helpless and unable to control them.
Many theories have been said about why people stutter. Mainstream research now indicates that genetics play a major role. Most PWS have a family history of stuttering. However, not all people, that have a genetic predisposition, stutter. A significant event usually occurs that brings out the actual manifestation of the disfluency. Usually, the rapid growth of speech and language, which occurs at age 2-3 is enough to bring out the stutter. For some, family stresses such as moving, or starting a new

school is a trigger that starts the stuttering. For others, it never manifests itself into actual disfluency.
When thinking about the factors that contribute to stuttering, it is helpful to think about these three Ps. Predisposition, Precipitation and Perpetuation. Predisposing factors, like genetics, make it more likely that someone will eventually stutter. However, an event usually occurs to bring out this potential. Precipitating factors such as rapid growth in speech and language skills, social adjustments and other environmental factors are strong enough to bring out the potential of stuttering. And finally, the reason why people continue to stutter is because of the Perpetuating factors such as habit strength, environmental factors and perhaps most importantly, feelings of guilt and shame.
The goals in stuttering treatment vary according to each person’s needs. There are usually two main goals in stuttering therapy. Learning how to talk easier and changing one’s negative perception of speech and themselves.
Learning how to talk easier is achieved by learning speech tools. These tools help the speaker produce speech in a different way, such as minimizing the tension in the speech system, beginning a sentence with more air, and stuttering in an easier and lighter way.
People also learn how to develop healthier attitudes and feelings about talking and about themselves in general. This is done by learning how to respond to situations with less anxiety and with more confidence. Not everyone, however, needs to change how they feel about talking. Many kids and teens are confident and are willing to talk to others. For many others, however, talking brings up feelings of anxiety and fear, even guilt and shame. Overcoming these negative attitudes and feelings is just as important as learning to talk more easily.

Using Mike's cell phone, without any staff members around, Michoel can finally tell Hinda the truth: that something is off about this place, and the real reason he wants Yosef to come is to help him escape from there.
Hearing the conversation, Dov wonders if perhaps it's Michoel who is being too paranoid, and maybe the place is fine.
“The biggest problem is that time is very, very short, and we’re afraid he won’t be able to get a passport in time to leave in a normal way,” Dov told Hinda later that evening.
“A passport?” Hinda, mending the hem on Dov’s Shabbos pants, raised her eyes to look at him. “How did he get into the country?”
“With his passport, of course. But after the accident, when he ran to Michoel’s house, the passport disappeared.”
“He had it that evening?”
“Apparently, but in the emergency room he discovered that it was not in his pocket. The lawyer, Schwartzman, looked into it, and the police say they didn’t take it. And that no one else did either.”
“If you can believe them… So maybe he left it in the dorm that evening?”
“Could be. We called and spoke to the secretary there,
and they sent a few boys to look in the storage room, where Martin’s belongings that he left are being kept.” Dov watched the needle moving in and out of the fabric. “They didn’t find anything, so he’ll go tomorrow to look himself, and to collect his things. It sounds like he’s happy to have a chance to say goodbye.”
“Is there a possibility that the wallet is there, just none of the boys happened to find it?”
“Very slight.”
“So what do we do?” Hinda threaded the needle with more thread. “Is it possible to ask the government for an extension?”
“That’s what Schwartzman is trying to do, but there’s a risk that because of the hide-and-seek games that he played until now, they'll be too edgy and won’t let him wait even one more day.”
“But it’s a very legitimate request. I mean, what do they want him to do? Do they have another option for him?”
Dov nodded. “For sure. They can keep him in detention until everything works out. Or they can deport him without a passport.”
“Without a passport? But then they won’t let him into Canada!”
“Regardless, Martin does not plan to go to Canada. He claims it’s a bit dangerous for him there. He had a story with some petty criminals, and that’s one of the reasons he came to Israel. He’d be better off going to America; his Canadian passport allows him to do that.”
“If he finds it, of course.”
“If,” Dov agreed. “That’s the big question. Without a passport, he can't get into America either.”
“What a story… Poor guy.”
“Right. You know, I really appreciate your involvement, Hinda,” Dov said suddenly. “Especially as you have other worrying things preoccupying your mind much more right now.”
“It’s not a contradiction,” she said. Still, the compliment made her smile. “The fact that I’m worried about Yosef doesn’t mean that I can’t try to think of how to help Martin.”
“If not for that ridiculous deportation order, I would find him a good place to learn here. I feel bad about him. He’s really taken an interest in Yiddishkeit ever since, out of boredom, he read three quarters of Michoel’s library… I even thought about a yeshivah for potential ba'alei teshuvah. I had a few good options for him.” He paused. “I don’t know what will be with him in America— if he does end up there. I’m afraid that everything he gained here will go down the drain.”
“I can speak to Weisskopf, my cousin,” Hinda suggested, but she wasn’t sure they would click. Dov got along great with Martin, but the boy definitely was a certain type, and his rich record of entanglements would not go over well with her family in Boro Park, at least to the extent that she knew them. ***
It had been three weeks already since all she ate each day was half a slice of bread in the morning, a piece of potato for lunch, and a small yogurt in the evening. In the interim, when no one was looking, she also ate candy, and what she was most interested in knowing was whether someone who really, really wants to be anorexic can end up like that, emotionally. Because if so…maybe she needed to stop this. Mike wasn’t responding to the faxes she sent in the middle of the night. It seemed like he didn’t really care, and barely remembered that he had a little sister in the world named Becky.
And maybe…maybe he’d already died, of malnourishment?
Becky didn’t mean to burst into tears in the middle of the night; it was involuntary. And when she did it, the two housekeepers burst into her room, sleepy-eyed, and tried to calm her down, to no avail. They offered her cake, ice cream, and tea. Actually, the tea sounded tempting, but a moment after she took the cup, with the steam curling above it, she pushed it away. “This has sugar, doesn't it?”
“Of course!” Sue said. “Then I don’t want it.” Becky put the cup down on her pink night table. “Sugar is fattening.”
Poor Mike probably hadn’t tasted sugar in a long time. Maybe he hadn’t died, but his condition was surely deteriorating. Otherwise, why wasn’t he answering her? Or was it that, as she’d thought before, he wasn't interested in her anymore?
Becky wavered between fear for her brother, and deep fury. “I hate him!” she suddenly shouted and pushed away the plate with the melting ice cream. “He’s bad! He’s bad, bad, bad!” And she threw herself onto the floor and wailed and kicked her feet, just like any six-yearold would do. And as much as the two housekeepers, and her mother, who also ran in, reminded her that she was so smart, and it didn’t make sense for her not to understand that this was not appropriate behavior, she did not calm down. She just shrieked in response that, “Even if I have lots of brains, my therapist said that my emotions are on par with my age! And sometimes, sixyear-olds kick and scream and lie on the floor!”

Yosef leaned on the fence of the sheep pen, listening to the sounds. There were “maaas” and “baaas” from the sheep, and a bit of quiet talking among the people who were with him. He turned his back to the two youths standing there and filling the animals' food trough from a large sack.
“What’s doing, Yosef?” Ronny, the one in charge of the sheep, slapped him on the shoulder in a friendly manner. “Did you come to teach our sheep some math?”
“I already taught one boy today; he’s fourteen,” Yosef replied. “But they learn complicated stuff these days. It’s okay. He was happy to do multiplication tables. He needed lots of practice on that, anyway.”
“Nice! Who was it?”
“Omar something. Don’t remember the name.”
“Oh, Omar Darwaseh.”
“Right.”
“And what’s now? Won’t you help me out a little bit with the sheep?”
“I don’t think I can now.” Yosef took a step back. “I have a shiur in the shul, for religious people, and then they said someone will come to teach us how to use Otzar Hachachmah.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s a computer program with thousands of sefarim downloaded on it, and we can search for whatever
sefer we want and learn from it. That kind of thing.”
“Oh, you learn Torah? Like in the yeshivos of the Chareidim?”
“Sometimes. I’m not really able to learn right now in a real yeshiah, but I try to do my own learning, depending on how much time and energy I have. And concentration.”
“What do you learn? Talmud?”
“We call it Gemara. I learn a little of that, but more Chumash, the parshah… In better times, I used to learn Gemara with someone every evening, but I stopped.”
“It’s a shame to stop good things.”
Yosef chuckled. “You’re in favor of learning Gemara?”
“If it does something good for you, then sure.”
From the sheep pen, Yosef went to his parshah shiur, to hear the nice thoughts shared by the maggid shiur who came each week from Kiryat Ata. At the end of the shiur, when he went over to say thank you to the maggid shiur, the man grasped his outstretched arm. “Have we ever met?” he asked Yosef.
“I was here a year and a half ago,” Yosef replied. “Or maybe more—I don’t remember so well. Your shiurim are really nice—that much I remember.”
“Thank you. What is your name?”
“Yosef.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Yaakov.”
Again Yaakov! Like the man who played chess with him!
“It’s not a good name,” Yosef told him dully. “You should ask a rav to change it for you.” And without waiting for a response, he walked out of the room.
From there, he went to the computer room, along with three other religious men; the oldest among them was fifty-two. The instructor showed them the ins and outs of the Otzar Hachachmah program. The older man, who turned out to be a bank clerk, was the one who managed the best of them all. Yosef, though, kept getting confused and kept clicking the wrong things. After half an hour of failed efforts to grasp the program, he left, frustrated with computers and with a maggid shiur by the name of Yaakov.
“Computers is obviously not for me,” he later told Hinda on the phone. “That’s how it is. There’s nothing to do about it.”
“Computers are overrated these days, aren't they?” She consoled him. “It’s okay if you didn’t get it. B’ezras Hashem, when you get released, you won’t work in computers, right?”
“Don’t know.” Yosef didn’t respond to the smile in her voice. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to go back to helping
out in the emergency room. Maybe I’ll stay here till I get old, and then it would be worth it for me to get to know this Otzar Hachachmah, without it shutting down on me every minute. Because the shul here doesn’t have so many sefarim. Also, there often isn’t a minyan.”
“Um…maybe there’s someone here who can help you with the computer,” Hinda said quickly, choosing not to address his last few sentences. “You remember the American boy who mistakenly came to Uncle Michoel’s house, and is staying in Zaid’s studio apartment upstairs?”
“Oh.” Yosef was quiet. After a pause he said, “Are you sure he’s not following me, Ima? Because that is what it looked like at first. I don’t know. Maybe I wasn’t totally balanced, but…why does he come after me wherever I go?”
“He isn’t following you, Yosef. He’s running away from others.”
“Why does it always get to me?”
“Because while he was fleeing, he was looking for Uncle Michoel, and then our family.”
“And now that he will come to me here, it will be to escape from the others?” Yosef sighed. “I have to think about it, Ima’le.”
And when Hinda heard his “Ima’le,” she relaxed, despite Yosef’s previous remark about staying in Tirat Carmel forever. Because it sounded like he was starting to come back to himself.
Whether or not he agreed for Martin to come to him was a small and nearly irrelevant question, especially as she hadn’t even heard Martin’s opinion on the idea. ***
“No problem, I’ll go help him out with the computer program, sure,” Martin said. He shifted the yarmulke he had bought for himself in recent days, out of consideration for his hosts, back and forth on his head, unable to hide his mounting impatience ever since the lawyer had filed a request in his name to postpone his departure. “Maybe it will help distract me from this pressure… But are you sure he wants me?”
“Nothing is sure,” Dov replied, after glancing for a second at Hinda. “Depends on his mood. Look, I’ll take you. At worst, we’ll come back sooner than we’d planned.”
“Will it be okay for you to go there without me?” Hinda fussed with her bag. She needed to go out this evening for her collections in Kiryat Chaim; she had regular donors who were expecting her.

She took a few rugelach out of the freezer and packed them up. Martin took the bag from the table, and Hinda davened that this visit would only be beneficial for Yosef. She hadn’t asked him again if he wanted Martin to come and help him with the program, but she sufficed with the fact that Yosef hadn’t explicitly objected; after all, he'd promised to think about it.
As Dov had said, they could come back quickly, if need be. And it was hard for her to imagine that Yosef would erupt at Martin there. He had sounded good in the recent phone calls, and even if Martin would somehow arouse some unexplained anger in him, he should be able to control that anger. It wasn’t uncontainable anymore.
But she did not imagine that Yosef would actually welcome them warmly. He was polite, courteous, and so filled with gratitude, that Dov wanted to speak to someone on the staff to ask if they’d changed something in his medication. But just to be safe, he stayed in the computer room with him and Martin, dozing on a green, upholstered chair and listening with half an ear to Martin’s explanations. The program was foreign to Martin, but he grasped it very quickly, and discovered that it was quite interesting. Together with Yosef, he searched for the gematrios of his name in all the parts of Tanach.
“You explain things very well,” Yosef complimented him. “I’m sorry that I once thought you were following me.”
“I really was acting suspicious,” Martin agreed. He was also surprised at the big change in Yosef.
“You look different now.”
Martin gave a half smile. “The yarmulke?” he suggested. “Maybe.” Yosef studied him. “Is it real?”
Martin took it off for a moment, looked at it, and then burst out laughing. “And not what, made of plastic?”
“I meant—is it permanent?”
“Permanent for now.” Martin looked at Dov, sitting a few feet away. “As long as I’m staying there, I need to respect them, right?”
“Will you be there for much longer?”
“Depends. I’m supposed to be leaving already, but my passport disappeared. I went yesterday to the dorm where I was studying, and searched for it but couldn’t find it. Let’s see what happens…”
“So get a new passport, and that’s it.”
“It takes time, a long time. Especially now in the summer, when lots of people want to travel.”
“I don’t know. I got a passport when I was about six years old. We went with my mother to America when her cousin married off one of his children. He invited us and paid for the tickets, maybe because my father passed away and he felt bad for us.” He paused. “If I would need to fly someplace now, I’d also need a new passport.”
“Why would you need to go anywhere?”
“My uncle, Michoel Perl, invited me to come to him. Didn’t my mother tell you?”
“Oh, yeah, I heard something about that.”
“But my mother says she won’t let me fly, because it’s not clear to her what’s with him, and if he really needs my help. And who knows if I can even be of help to him?
D1efinitely not when I’m here…”
“Yes,” Martin agreed.
“Hey, you also grew a small beard.”
“Oh.” Martin fingered the fuzzy stubble. “It’s because I’m not using my regular shaver. It got lost. And…your mother’s husband is lending me his hair clippers, and it’s nothing to write home about.”
“But the beard looks good on you.” Yosef studied him. “You look much nicer this way.” His eyes clouded for a moment. “It’s not because you want to be her son instead of me, right?”
“Whose son, your mother’s?”
“Yes.”
“Not at all. My mother passed away when I was very little, and I’m not looking for substitutes.”
“Oh,” Yosef said. “Because there are all kinds of people who are trying…who want my mother to become like their mother.” He jerked his head in Dov's direction; his stepfather seemed to be asleep. “H-his children, for example.”
“Well, I’m not. Although I can understand his children, no? You’re also a bit like his son now.”
“A bit. But not instead of them.” His eyes looked troubled, and Martin felt a frisson of anxiety that perhaps Yosef would start screaming again, like he had in Perl’s yard that day. But Yosef just sighed and turned his eyes back to the keyboard. “Fine. I understand how to search for gematrios and all that. What do I do when I want to find a sefer on the parshah? How do you look for, say, something easy for children to understand?” TO BE CONTINUED

Q: I am writing because my daughter is struggling in school. She is not doing poorly – actually she gets mostly Bs on her report cards. However, she studies much, much more than her peers. Sometimes she spends hours studying for a vocabulary quiz. For some reason, only part of what she studies seems to stick. Is there some way I can help her better remember what she studies?
A: Study skills are essential tools for elementary school and beyond. Even adults need memory strategies to remember important details in their personal or work lives. A great way to ensure successful studying is to provide your daughter with a RIP toolbox. RIP stands for Repetition, Imagery, and Patterns. These three strategies can help your daughter better recall the information she is studying:
Repetition: Repetition and rehearsal of information enhance a process called consolidation, the process by which memories are moved from temporary storage in the hippocampus (a small structure within the brain) to more permanent storage in the cortex (the outer layer of the brain). Multiple repetitions can be boring – and therefore children might turn their
brains off, negating the positive effects of repetition. Therefore, here are some tips for repetition:
• Set the information to music. Singing a song can make the material easier and more fun to recall.
• Develop silly mnemonics to help remember the information. For instance, if you are working on state capitals, for Ohio, sketch a picture of a person saying, "oh, hi, oh Columbus." This associates the word "Columbus" with the word "Ohio.
• Use flashcards. Creating the flashcards provides another opportunity for repetition and then flipping through them links the information to a motor skill.
Imagery:
Creating or studying images can help your daughter’s brain better store the information. Some types of images can even include motor images which translate the information into muscle memory. Here are some tips for study strategies that include imagery:
• Use graphic organizers. Graphic organizers can use key words, pictures, or icons. These mental images can help arrange the information in a coherent and streamlined manner.
• Develop motor images. Using air writing or imagining seeing letters
Schonfeld, Directorcan be a powerful memory tool for students learning to read. For some, these visual or motor images are easier to recall then the simple words on the page.
Patterns:
Our brains seek meaning through patterns. As we receive new information, we need a system to organize it – and patterns are an excellent resource for this.
• Utilize rhymes. Because rhymes rely on rhythms, they have built in patterns. Using this rhythm to integrate important information will help the material stick in your daughter’s brain.
• Invent mnemonics. Mnemonics, or a short sequence of letters or words that help your child remember the information can be very helpful. For instance, if your child is learning the order of the planets in the social system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto), she could use the sentence: My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.
Your daughter might simply need to understand the way memory works in order to develop more efficient study habits. Just remember to praise her effort and persistence – even a hug and smile can do wonders for her morale.

In a documentary, Dr. Mindy Pelz, reviews how timerestricted eating (TRE) can improve your health and balance your hormones. In general, I believe TRE is one of the most foundational strategies to stay healthy, but the devil’s in the details, and Pelz will tease out some of those here.
The vast majority of people eat across 12 hours or more, which is a recipe for metabolic disaster. Health statistics bear this out, showing that 93.2% of Americans are metabolically unfit.
In July 2022, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology posted an update on the metabolic fitness or flexibility of the American population. In 2016, 12.2% of Americans were considered metabolically fit. Two years later, in 2018, only 6.8% of U.S. adults had optimal cardiometabolic health. That was four years ago so, today, that ratio is probably even lower.
Metabolic fitness includes things like blood glucose and blood sugar, blood pressure and weight, and metabolic flexibility refers to your body’s ability to seamlessly transition between burning fat and carbohydrates as your primary fuel.
The take-home message is that now 19 out of 20 Americans would benefit from improving their metabolic health, and TRE is one of the easiest yet most powerful interventions for reducing insulin resistance, restoring metabolic flexibility and losing excess body fat.
Pelz has spent the last eight years of her clinical career using TRE, finetuning it in the trenches and gaining an understanding of the hormonal components that need to be taken into consideration, especially in women.
As explained by Pelz, your body has two primary energy systems. One of them is activated when you eat. When your blood sugar goes up, your body uses that glucose for energy. When you don’t eat for a period of time, your blood sugar goes down, and if you are metabolically flexible your body switches over to a different energy system that uses ketones derived from fat, instead of glucose.
"Some people call it the fat burner energy system. But we're really meant to metabolically switch over to this system," Pelz says. "What I think has happened is that people are trying to just manipulate the food. We have so many discussions about what type of food [to eat] and the calorie counting idea.
But what we're starting to see is that the more powerful conversation is WHEN to eat and how to switch over to this fat burning system. And what we know based on research, and what I'm seeing now in millions of people, is that the longer we stay in this fat burning ketogenic system, the more healing happens.
We know that at 13 to 15 hours [of fasting], we start to make ketones. We see growth hormone rise. We see inflammation come down. At 17, 18 hours in this fasted state, we start to see autophagy kick in. At 24 hours, we know that stem cells can start to come about in the intestinal area.
At 48 hours, we're seeing antioxidant production go up. And Valter Longo taught us that [with] 72 hours [of fasting], you can reboot your whole immune system. So, it's like this neurochemical magic that can happen in the body, but you can only access it
Another interesting component is that these energy systems are intimately tied to your circadian rhythm. Many know that the circadian rhythm is regulated by a master clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of your brain. But what most people don't realize is that most all cells in your body also have an internal clock that is unrelated to this master clock.
While light and darkness regulate the master clock, food is the most important regulator or trigger for this other clock inside your cells. So, if you don’t get your feeding times right, your circadian rhythms, which are responsible for turning cellular protein production on and off, will get seriously impaired. Pelz explains:
"The easiest way to understand this is go back to how we lived in the primal days. Everything that we did back in those primal days was around the rising of the sun, the falling of the sun and the search for food.
Now we're so affected by artificial light, and we have access to food all day long, that we are out of touch with our natural rhythm, the circadian rhythm being one of them. So, when we start to fast, we actually mimic what our primal ancestors did, which is go a little longer without food.
Usually that was in the morning. They had to get up and go search for food. They came home in the afternoon and they feasted. So, this feast-famine cycling, when done within a day period, tends to tap into this circadian rhythm and can start to bring back some normalcy to these natural rhythms that modern life has pulled us away from."
The basic premise of TRE is that you eat all your meals within a specified window of time each day, and fast for
the remainder. Where people differ is the length of that window. Here are three key rules to keep in mind:
1. Your eating window should definitely be shorter than 12 hours
2. Avoid eating first thing in the morning. Wait at least two or three hours
3. Avoid eating right before bed. Have your last meal at least three hours or more before bedtime
With those "absolutes" in mind, your eating window could be anywhere from two to 10 hours. Eventually, you’ll need to find the ideal window for yourself, but to start, here are some other basic considerations.
"The first thing is to remember that you are trying to mimic what we did primally. So, feast-famine cycling. Sometimes they feasted and sometimes they went two or three days without food, and that's how they're able to switch in and out. The best way to approach fasting, in my opinion, and what I'm seeing with my community, is finding your natural rhythm.
We rarely want absolutes. I started to teach autophagy and people fell in love with the concept. But what we found is that a lot of people got very rigid with their fasting window. They'd get great results, but then they'd get stuck and start to get bad results because it became too rigid and they weren't mimicking this feast-famine cycling.
So, what I started teaching was how to vary it. I like a general 5-1-1 concept, where five days a week, you're intermittent fasting maybe 15 hours. One day a week you stretch it a little bit, and one day a week, you don't fast.
What we're seeing with that is unreal — the amounts of medication people are getting off of, the weight people are losing, and the super charging of their brain, all by just getting back into this feast-famine rhythm [that is] unique to them. So, there's really not one answer of what's the perfect fasting window.
A lot of people love the 16:8 [fasting
when you go without food."
for 16 hours and eating within eight]. That seems to be a very popular fasting window, and I think that works really great. But again, we've got to keep variation at the forefront of this conversation."
So, how do you go about finding your unique and ideal feasting-fasting schedule? Pelz suggests starting by getting your fat burning system working again. If you’ve been an allday grazer, start by compressing the window of time within which you eat.
Note the time you normally eat your first meal or snack, and when you eat your last. Count the hours, and then cut that down by one or two hours. Pelz recommends pushing back breakfast by one hour to start.
"You want to get a little uncomfortable," she says. "Because you've applied a hormetic stress that your body can adapt to now. Once you get comfortable there, you push it back another hour, and another hour, until you get to 15 hours.
You want to feel ketones. And ketones feel like they supercharge your brain, you have better energy and your hunger goes away. That's how you really know you've switched over, and for most people, that will happen around 15, 16 hours of not eating."
Do that for one month, or until you’re completely comfortable with it, and then move into a more varied schedule, such as the 5-1-1 schedule mentioned earlier. The key at that point is variation. Feasting one day, and fasting for longer and shorter times on others.
After I did this interview with Dr. Mindy, I began studying Ray Peat's work and realized an important point.
If you are one of the 19 out of 20 people who are metabolically inflexible, insulin resistant, and unable to easily switch between burning sugar and fat as your primary fuel, then the program that Dr. Mindy describes may be beneficial for you.
However, once you regain your metabolic flexibility, which can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, you will need to increase your eating window. This is because your body needs glucose and if you deprive it for too long, it will produce cortisol to stimulate your liver to make it. This increased cortisol can contribute to chronic inflammation and cellular damage.
Therefore, once you are no longer insulin resistant, it is best to vary your eating window between 8 and 12 hours and avoid going lower or higher than that window. It is also best to avoid eating before sunrise or after sunset and at least three hours before bedtime.
Interestingly, research has shown that when you compress your eating window to around 16 hours or more, you become relatively metabolically immune to the damage that otherwise unhealthy foods would cause, such as processed food and refined carbohydrates.
This is not permission to eat junk food forever, but it does allow you to have a less than perfect diet all the time and still lose weight. This also means that when you’re first starting out, don’t change WHAT you’re eating. Only change WHEN you’re eating. So, if you eat a lot of processed foods, continue as normal, and just compress the eating window.
Once you’re used to that, THEN you can start making nutritional changes, start cutting out some of the unhealthiest foods and add in more wholesome choices you may not be
used to. This will give you the greatest chance of success.
In a book, Pelz describes six different fasts, ranging from 13 to 72 hours, all of which have been tested on millions of people. She suggests thinking of fasts as "switches," where the longer you stay in a fasted state, the more healing is allowed to take place in your body.
"The idea of an eight- to 10-hour eating window is really easy. But I want to encourage people to dip into some of the longer fasts because that's where we're seeing incredible results. For example, a lot of people who are struggling to lose weight will do an eight- to 10-hour eating window, and they're like, ‘I don't have any ketones. I'm still hungry. I'm not losing weight.’
And so we've got to push it a little bit more so that we can get the body to find the glucose that it stored years ago (as triglycerides in your adipose tissue). The one for weight loss I love is 36 hours, where for 30 days, people do 36 hours of fasting followed by 12 hours of eating.
They saw a tremendous amount of reductions specifically in belly fat, which is an area where people really want to see a lot of weight loss. So, we know that when we go to those longer fast, we can push weight loss a little more.
There's an incredible study showing that at 48 hours we start to see the whole dopamine system reboot, and we actually get new dopamine receptors. And we see that in our community, where people with mood disorders, not clinically intense ones but just general depression, malaise and anxiety, when they go into a 48-hour fast, they start to notice that they're happier in the weeks afterward.
So, we're saying, find what works for you most of the time, and then experiment and dabble in some of
these longer fast. Sprinkle them in so that you get the healing benefit that occurs in these longer periods [of fasting]."
Aside from improved mood, those benefits also include autophagy and increased stem cell production. All of that said, though, longer fasts are not ideal for everyone. While in the past I’ve done up to 10-day water fasts, I no longer go beyond 20 hours or so, due to my age and my already optimized metabolic flexibility.
At this point in my life I’m far more concerned about maintaining muscle mass and preventing sarcopenia. I am more than convinced that the daily 18hour fasts I do provide me with more than enough autophagy.
If I cut calories by 500 or 1,000, I can lose a pound or two, maybe even 5 pounds if I do it over a weekend of travel. So, again, there are no hard and fast rules. You really need to determine what works best for you, and keep your eye on your goal. What is it that you’re trying to achieve? Weight loss? Disease reversal? Antiaging benefits? Muscle mass maintenance?
Each may benefit from a different fasting schedule. "As long as fasting is working for you and you're not getting stuck [on a plateau], then you don't need to take that one-day [fast]," Pelz says. For the record, muscle loss is not a given, even with longer fasting intervals, so if you’re younger and fit, you can still do them. The key then lies in making sure you’re feeding your muscles correctly when you do eat. As explained by Pelz:
"When you're fasting, you're going without food. But then once you open up that eating window, eat! This is a time to nourish yourself.
For muscle maintenance, you want at
least 30 grams of protein, twice a day, to activate mTOR and provide enough raw materials to sustain your muscle mass, if not increase it. The reason muscle mass is so important is because within your muscle you have receptors that drive sugar into the muscle, so they act as a glucose sink. That’s how increasing your muscle mass helps counteract high blood sugar and lower your risk of diabetes.
"My recommendation is, always break your fast with protein, and come in with at least 30 grams," Pelz says. "So now we're switched back into sugar burner, but we got mTOR to build that muscle.
The hardest thing is that you might have to eat, even if you're not hungry, because the ketones have killed that hunger hormone. So, you may have to really be mindful and intentional about your food.
This is where I get in a lot of debates sometimes, especially in the women's health world, about calorie restriction versus fasting. Women, especially women over 40, do not want to be in calorie restriction. When you eat, you want to eat, and you want to eat protein.
Think of it like this: There's a time when the eating window is closed, and then once you open it, then it's like, ‘OK, now I'm going to eat.’ And the research [suggests eating] 30 grams [of protein] a few times a day.
Sometimes we can get away with 20, but the clinical research on protein cycling [shows] 30 grams every two to three hours is the best way to stimulate those amino acid receptors in the muscle that will build muscle …
The other really cool tool is working out in a fasted state, stress your muscle, break that muscle down, and then follow up with protein. We're seeing a lot of lean body muscle masses happening approaching it that way."
As mentioned earlier, you want to eat your last meal at least three to four hours before bed. One reason for this is because digestion continues for five to six hours after our last bite or drink of any food (calories). So, if you eat your last meal three hours before bed, you’ll remain in digestive mode for another three while sleeping.
Assuming you sleep for eight hours, that gives you five hours in repair and regeneration mode while sleeping, plus however many hours you fast into the morning. Getting this timing right is important, as it affects your insulin level and related hormones, such as melatonin. When you’re digesting food, melatonin will be inhibited, and hence the quality of your sleep will go down and your insulin resistance will go up.
"If we could solve insulin resistance, we'd solve a lot of problems. So, you have to remember that when melatonin goes up, you're going to become more insulin resistant. When does melatonin go up? It starts to go up as the sun goes down. So, in the winter time, you're going to need to eat a lot earlier. You're going to need to stop eating around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.
If you want an eight-hour eating window, you want to make sure you're measuring that window to melatonin's demands. When you first get up in the morning, melatonin's high, you're again going to be more insulin resistant. So, we've got these bookends of light that we need to look at for our eating window and act accordingly.
Personally, in the summertime, I'm a fan of [eating between] 11 and 5, maybe even 4. In the wintertime, you're going to probably have to move that eating window up a little bit so that you end up stopping well before sunset so that your body can be more insulin sensitive with that meal."

ADid you notice that every single container of yogurt in the grocery contains sugar? It’s not your imagination. In fact, every yogurt or dairy item contains natural sugar. Many times, you will even find loads of added sugars in there too, sometimes natural and sometimes artificial. Lactose is the natural sugar that is found in dairy products. The body breaks down the lactose to glucose and galactose in order for your body to absorb it and use if for energy. This means, that any dairy product you will buy, will have sugar listed on the nutrition facts panel. Plain, unflavored yogurt, naturally contains natural sugar. Some people, (or should I say many people), don’t love plain yogurt. Therefore, what do the manufacturers do? They add sugars in many different forms, be it honey, jam, or even artificial sugars, to sweeten it. These are the sugars you ought to be weary of.
Yogurt provides so many amazing nutrients for you, such as protein, calcium, potassium, vitamin B-12, and riboflavin. It is also incredible for your gut health. Adding a little sugar is ok, but it is very simple to go overboard. On average, organic yogurts, (yes, this sounds super healthy) contain about 13 grams
of sugar, which is roughly equivalent to 3 sugar cubes! Some yogurts, even those in the organic category, have more sugar than a 12 ounce can of Coca-Cola!
Check out how much added sugar your yogurt has and consider taking a step down. Sometimes lowering the added sugar can be as simple as just choosing a different flavor. If you are choosing a yogurt with fruit on the bottom, it is very likely that there is a bucket load of sugar sitting on the bottom of the container. When you add your own fruits, you get more fruits into your diet and way less sugar with your meal. As a result, you will also be left feeling way fuller. If you decide to buy plain yogurt and add natural sweeteners, you will still want to be mindful of what you are adding. Honey and maple syrup for example, sound healthy, but they actually have more sugar per teaspoon than table sugar. If you really want to add honey, do so sparingly. My recommendation to my clients that cannot handle the artificial sweeteners, or those that want the full fat option with no sugar, is to use full fat, plain yogurt. Want some fruit with it? Sure! Add a cup of assorted fruit as your carbohydrate option. You
now have a full fat, high protein, and fruit filled breakfast. That is perfection!
Also, it is important to mention, that many women and girls I work with, tend to add granola and loads of fruit to their yogurts. Does this sound “healthy”? Yes! Is it necessarily healthy? No! Granola contains sugar, honey, brown sugar, and flavoring that are not necessarily healthy for us. Also, if you are watching your weight, granola, in any size, shape, or form, be it homemade or store bought, will not help you with weight loss! You can get your carbs and healthy sources of fats from things that will actually keep you fuller. Granola is so high calorie because it is (usually) packed with dehydrated foods, high fat nuts and seeds, added oil or fat, plus sugar. Nearly all of the ingredients in granola are calorie dense. A ½ cup of granola has about 230 calories. Yes, is it healthy? Certainly! But it may also contain loads of added sugars and fat that are deemed extra. Same with fruits. Fruits are great for you! But too many fruits on a weight loss journey will interfere with your weight loss goal.

Answer: If your appraisal comes in higher, the only thing that could change is the mortgage insurance. In some states, if per the appraised values you own at least 20% of the property, you don't have to pay mortgage insurance.
If the appraised values come in lower, then you need to adjust your loan amount, as if the purchase price is the amount on th report. You might stay with the same loan amount, but y be based on the appraised value. (LTV stands for Loan-to which compares the loan amount to the appraised value price of a property. It helps determine the borrower's eq property).
You can usually try to rebuttal the appraiser's decision on the value of the property by providing comparables of similar houses that sold in the area at higher prices.

I get tremendous chizuk from your columns and stories, and I feel privileged to share a personal story that can inspire others.
We had a computer at home while my wife, Miriam*, was working toward her degree in social work. The computer was filtered, of course, and we figured we would get rid of it as soon as she finished her schooling. The last semester ended, but it was hard to give up the convenience of a home computer…so it stayed where it was.
Miriam interned in a large clinic, where we hoped that she would land a job after the internship. It was a heimish environment, and the hours would be ideal. However, we soon found out that a permanent position wasn’t going to materialize. That clinic is government-funded, and since my wife was still an LSW (as opposed to a LCSW), they would need to pay her wages out of pocket.
“In a couple of years, when you get your LCSW, we’ll be thrilled to hire you,” they told her.
The job market was very tight. The frum places were all full, and the non-Jewish locations were far from ideal. The hours were also very hard, but it seemed that we had no other choice. We asked a Rav if Miriam could work in a non-Jewish clinic for several months, until she could hopefully get a position in a more suitable location. The Rav gave his approval.
My father-in-law was devastated when he heard the news. He called the supervisor of the frum clinic, and arranged a meeting for Miriam. It felt like a waste of time, since
they had clearly explained their position.
“I know this is pointless,” Miriam told the supervisor at the meeting. “But I’m doing this for kibbud av. My father insisted that I try.”
The supervisor repeated what we already knew, that the clinic would gladly hire Miriam when she got the required credentials. That was it. Miriam went to several interviews at non-Jewish clinics, without too much success. Nothing materialized.
We spoke about Emunah and hishtadlus. We knew that we had done what we could, and the outcome was up to Hashem.
Sunday night, there was a technology asifah at Beis Medrash Gavoha, as a zechus for the recovery of Rav Matisyahu Solomon shlita. When I repeated some of the inspiring messages at home, Miriam said that she’s finally ready to give up our home computer.
“It should be a zechus that I should find a job in the right place, and with the right hours,” Miriam said.
It wasn’t easy, but the computer was out of our house that Sunday night.
The next day, Miriam went for some training at the clinic and she even spoke to the supervisor about her last day of work. A few hours later, she got a call from the supervisor.
“I spoke to the director,” the supervisor said. “He changed his mind. He wants to hire you. When can you come in to discuss the details?”
Miriam got a job at that frum clinic, with the exact hours that suited our schedule. Less than twenty-four hours after the computer left our home, there was a tremendous flow of berachah that took its place.

Reb Yehuda Tzvi, the grandson of the Sanzer Rebbe, was at a Seudas Bris with his grandfather. The Rav was honored to say some words of Torah. It was on a Wedenesday afternoon and he began to expound on the Heiligkeit of Shabbos. The Sanzer Rav became so excited and emotionally charged speaking about Shabbos, that when he finished, he called out to all those at the table, "Shabbos Shalom, Shabbos Shalom!!"
R' Yehuda Tzvi felt that Shabbos was soon to be. He quickly ran home to get his special white clothes, and headed for the Mikveh in honor of the Shabbos. Along the way he met another young man who had heard the Sanzer Rav speak about Shabbos, and he too was on his way to the Mikveh! They joyously made their way together to the Mikveh, but when they arrived, they saw that no one else was there. They then understood that the excitement of the Sanzer Rav had caused them to think that Shabbos was about to come.
