Recap: Ahuva meets Tehilla and Rachelli on their walk home from school. Tehilla runs away with Rachelli and explains what happened between Ahuva and herself in eighth grade. Rachelli responds by saying that she doesn’t have actual proof that it was Ahuva who spread the rumors and then gives her the stack of Tehilla’s missing library books without explaining where and how she had them. Chava reaches out to the principal of Tehilla’s school. Ahuva tries unsuccessfully to figure out the truth about who started the rumors about Tehilla.
“I see.” Pause. “Aha, I hear.” Another longer pause.
Then, “Of course, I will need to discuss this with her. But knowing her, I believe this arrangement will work beautifully for both of them. Let’s be in touch, Debbie, okay?”
I heard my mother hang up the phone. I discreetly sat down near her.
“You scared me, Tehilla!” Ma exclaimed.
“What’s going on? What do you need to discuss with me?” I wasted no time admitting that I had, in fact, just eavesdropped.
“Hey! How did you know that I was talking about you?” Ma teased.
I smiled. “I have a sixth sense for these things, y’know!” We shared a laugh. It struck me how rare it was these days for us to share a small laugh and spend quality time together. I was in school all day, and hardly had time when I came home. Our relationship had morphed from meaningful to manageable. There was a difference.
My mother eyed me thoughtfully before explaining her conversation. “I just hung up with Aunt Debbie,” she began. “You know her daughter Faigy?”
Ma continued at my nod, “She graduated high school in Arizona last year. Debbie wanted her to come to a Brooklyn Seminary, but Faigy wanted to teach elementary school. They came up with a compromise: Faigy is attending a half day program in Brooklyn and teaching in the afternoons.”
“Where is she staying? In her seminary’s dorm?” I interrupted.
“That’s where she was staying. But recently, Seminary became too hard and too intense for a busy first year teacher. At first, Debby refused to let her quit her half day program,
but at this point, she really can’t juggle both. And quitting her teaching job isn’t an option.”
“So where will she stay now? Will they let her keep her dorm room?” I realized where we were headed with a sinking feeling.
“That’s where we come in, her only relatives in Brooklyn,” Ma finished softly. She toyed with the cordless on the table in front of her.
“Faigy can find accommodations in Brooklyn, but where can she find a nice and warm home with someone to greet her with a warm meal at the end of the day? Aunt Debby felt bad asking, considering our situation and all, but she really couldn’t think of anything else that is suitable, or even comparable, to what we can offer.”
“What do you mean, considering our situation?” My voice was bitter.
“I am physically limited. That’s all. Taking care of another teenager and making sure that she is okay will take physical energy. But I am ready to do it. The question is, are you?”
“Where would she sleep?” I opted to answer with a question.
“We don’t have a spare bed in any other bedroom, but yours.” Ma was apologetic.
“So I would get a roommate.”
“If you agree. It is completely up to you.” I got up and stretched. I reached into the cookie jar and hit the bottom. “No cookies left, Ma?”
My mother limped to the freezer and carefully emptied a bag of nougat cream cookies into the jar.
“Here you go.”
“I need to give her an answer by the end of this week. Think about it, Tehilla, and you may find yourself warming up to the idea. You never got to know Faigy, and she is a wonderful girl. I think you might even end up gaining more than you give!”
Ma’s voice rang in my mind as I tasted her famous nougat cream cookies. I loved hearing from Aunt Debby, Ma’s sister, over the years, but I never really got to spend time with her in person. The last time that I saw Faigy was three years ago, at a cousin’s wedding. Even then, we hadn’t exchanged more than polite chit-chat.
I wondered if it was even okay for me to refuse. After all, a teenager was entitled to her privacy! A small part of me was intrigued. The closest friend that I had made since letting go of Ahuva was Rachelli. But we always kept our relationship superficial. Subconsciously, I
refused to let our relationship deepen the way it had with Ahuva. Something inside of me still refused to completely trust another friend.
Family was different. No matter what, we were bound by flesh and blood. Faigy was my cousin and having her as a roommate would turn her into a friend as well. Was I ready for a new relationship?
If I cared to admit to even myself, somehow, I wasn’t really sure.

“Tenth grade exams are so unfair,” I griped to Rachelli. “I think we should stop at the ice cream store for a pity party.”
Rachelli smiled. “Totally. Let’s go for it!”
Five minutes later, we were seated at the round red table in the ice cream shop, poring over the menu like our life depended on it.
“Peanut Butter Cup Sundae Explosion,” I announced. Rachelli ordered Strawberry Yogurt ice cream and I got ready for my exotic sundae.
I described my dilemma over ice cream. “Saying yes means really compromising on my privacy,” I said earnestly. “But then again, how can I say no? If the situation were flipped, and I would need accommodations in Arizona, I would be so hurt if they would refuse to have me stay by them.”
Rachelli licked the side of her cup, where the ice cream was dripping. “Why do you value your privacy so much? Your house is big enough for you to hang out in a different room when you want to be alone.”
“Not alone,” I corrected her. “There is Chayala and Moti. After they go to sleep, my father and mother are home. There is no quiet room for me to relax in besides for my room. And yes, I do value my privacy. I don’t need a 24-7 companion, lovely as she may be.”
“So then just say no.”
I sighed and bit into a chunk of a peanut butter cup. “Funnily enough, I like the idea of a roommate. Yes, technically speaking, there are many problems that can arise, but I can iron out the details before to make it work. I really can make it work.”
“It sounds like you made up your mind.”
I smiled and paused to let the cold ice cream spread over my tongue. “I guess I did. Thanks, Rachelli. I feel so much better now.”
“I didn’t do anything,” she smiled, “But I don’t
mind taking credit for such a noble decision!” Later, as we parted at the corner, Rachelli hesitated before speaking.
“Tehilla, I hope I don’t come across as preachy or anything, but I want to tell you how much I admire you. You really grew since last year and you became so open, kind of letting your guard down with everyone at school, in a good way. And I admire you for that. You didn’t want to come to Bnos Batsheva, but you made a go of it. I am so lucky to have you.”
I swallowed a lump in my throat. Her sincere comment rang true to my ears. I deserved this compliment, but it didn’t feel good to be reminded of the past.
“Thanks, Rachelli.” Tears shone in my eyes. “I hope I deserved that. And I hope to keep being lucky back and having you!”
“Aw, that’s sweet!” Rachelli threw her head back and laughed. I laughed along and kept smiling as we parted with a light wave, the smile lingering on my face all the way to my house. ***
“Debs, I am so excited!” Chava sat down as she spoke. “Faigy will be in wonderland here, and she will hit it off with Tehilla right away, I am sure!”
“I can’t believe she is quitting Seminary,” Debbie admitted. “I really wanted her to have that special experience that I had as a girl.”
“But you wanted that experience,” her sister reminded her. “Remember how Mommy wasn’t even so into it? But you begged and pleaded and used your incredible DebbiePower to get your way?”
Debbie laughed, warmed by the memory. “Those were the days, Chavs, no?” her voice held a nostalgic note.
“Hmmm…Time flies,” Chava murmured. The memories that flitted through her mind featured Chava as the teenager that she once was: graceful dancer with dance solos in the major play, best basketball player, running across grassy fields…
But now she couldn’t even walk to the freezer in her kitchen without a noticeable limp.

“Yes, I am okay. Really, I will be fine.” Faigy spoke quickly as she zipped her suitcase shut. Heaving her teaching bag over her shoulder, she walked to the door. The dorm room was
empty, and classes were in full session. Soon, she would stand before a classroom full of noisy students. Soon, she would experience yet another day of failure.
“Thanks, Mom. I gotta go catch the next bus to Aunt Chava’s house; I don’t want to be late to school.”
“Okay, you go, then. Good Luck! I am rooting for you.”
Faigy smiled as she closed her phone. As if her mother’s rooting really helped. She had tried every teaching methods course that was out there by now, read up on every teaching book published, and even reached out to experienced teachers for guidance.
Faigy would never let herself call it quits, not after all that she had been through in her life. She would show her students what it meant to be committed to a goal, despite challenges. She was a role model, a teacher, wasn’t she?
Later, after she had deposited her suitcase at her aunt’s house and caught the next city bus to her school, she wasn’t so sure. Role models didn’t feel like shouting at her students to cut the nonsense and behave. Role models were looked up to, respected.
“I hate you, Miss Klein!” Evie banged her fist on her desk. “Why did you tell my mom that I am not a good student? My mom and dad were mad, and it was all because of you!”
The classroom was suddenly quiet. Faigy reddened and looked down.
“Well, Evie, are you a good student?” Joyce smirked and looked at Evie.
“Girls! Please, quiet down and let’s continue with our notes. We were talking about the Byzantine Empire,” Faigy tried.
Despite the behavior contest and her fascinating lesson plans, Faigy couldn’t even begin the lesson plan with her hook. The noise and disorder lasted until recess and resumed as soon as recess time was over. When the dismissal bell rang, she breathed a sigh of relief, dismissed her unruly class, and ran down the stairs. She ignored her pounding headache and her principal’s gaze as she flung the glass door open.
It was time to meet her cousin Tehilla. It was time to get to know her new roommate.

Michoel tries to convince Hinda to send Yosef to the treatment center where he’s at, but the way Michoel is talking, Hinda just becomes even warier of the place—and more concerned.
Mali opens up to her friend Shira about why she escaped her home. Shira puts things into perspective for her, and Mali is left feeling homesick.
Mike tries to convince Dr. Jerry to treat his sister Becky— since she’s written to him that she’s become anorexic too— but the doctor is afraid to take on a minor. What if that gets the police involved?
“Chani, are you leaving now?”
“I already left. I’m at the bus stop now.” Despite the four empty seats at the stop, Chani couldn’t sit down. She paced back and forth with her phone, glancing at the street every few moments.
“What do you say? Do you think I should also go?” She sighed. “You tell me, Baruch. Do you think you should go?”
“I don’t know. Last time he was hospitalized was two and a half years ago, and when I came to visit, he didn’t want to look at me.” Baruch fell silent for a minute. “And besides, it was during bein hazmanim.”
Chani heard all the unspoken words. “I don’t think it’s smart for you to go now, even though, to be honest, it would be much easier for me if you’d come along,” she said.
“Yes?” This time, it didn’t take a very sharp ear to hear the relief in his voice.
“What yes? Yes, that it would be easier for me if you came along, or yes, that you shouldn't go to him?”
“That I shouldn't go to him,” he whispered. “I can’t think of him in that place.”
“I know. Especially since, if I remember correctly, everyone who saw you in the ward told you how much you look like him, and that didn’t exactly make you feel good.”
“Right,” Baruch whispered again.
“I’ll give him regards from you.”
“Is the bus coming right now?” he asked suddenly.
“Because if not, maybe dash over to the bakery and buy him some of those peanut butter cookies that he loves, the ones that Michoel always used to bring… I’ll pay you back, b’ezras Hashem.”
“I bought them already. I’ll tell him they are from you.”
“Is Ima there now?”
“No,” Chani said. “She was there yesterday from when she brought him in until late at night. I told her not to come today, and that I would take the day off and go there.”
“You…do you think they’ll release him soon?”
“I don’t know,” she replied. “I really don’t know.”
“Okay…” he said slowly, and it seemed to her that her little brother—at twenty-four— might be crying.
“Bye, Baruch. Don’t let this get you too down. Hashem will help.”
As soon as she hung up, a smiling young woman tapped her on the shoulder. "You're Chani, right?"
Oy, her of all people.
“Right. And you are…Penina?”
“Yes! It's so cute that we were able to recognize each
other!” She tittered, her hand resting on the baby carriage with her.
“That’s to your credit; you were first… And is this your baby? She’s so sweet!” Chani smiled at the baby in the carriage. Then she looked at the bag she was holding. Pureed vegetable soup, mashed potatoes and chicken, three packages of chocolate, and a bag from Hatzvi Bakery. Change the subject, change the subject. She had no idea what Penina might have heard of her conversation with Baruch and what she knew. What they knew. What their father knew, in general.
“Yes, baruch Hashem… You know, I enjoyed it in your mother’s house. She really pampered me… She’s such a wonderful person.”
“I agree.”
“And tell me, what’s with that guy? My husband and I cannot figure out who he is. He must be from your side, right?”
“Our side?” Chani echoed, almost choking on every syllable. That was a strange way to put it. Hadn’t her father told them that Yosef was a son? What had he told them, that he was a miserable youth who’d come to live in their house as a chessed, or something?
“Maybe not…” Penina stammered, abashed. “He came with my father to my mother’s yahrtzeit, and then went back to Haifa with him… We understood that he’s a guest there now, and we were sure he’s some American cousin or something, because you have family overseas, don’t you?”
“I have no idea who you are talking about,” Chani managed to respond.
“Martin.”
“Martin?”
“Yes, the guy who messed up my husband… Your mother didn’t tell you? In the end they gave back his phone, but they came and asked us a million more questions. They apparently figured out, and we have no idea how, that he is somehow connected to my father, and we were really scared. But we haven’t heard anything from them since. My father refuses to answer any questions about him. He just said that no police came to arrest him or anything, and that we shouldn’t worry.”
Sounded like this family had some of their own dark secrets.
“Believe me, I have no idea what you're talking about. My mother didn’t say a word to me about anyone named Martin. Oh, wait!” Maybe she was referring to what Ima had told her nearly a month ago? “Some young man came over and told them things about my mother’s uncle from Yerushalayim… But I didn’t know his name was Martin, or that he stayed with them.”
"Is staying with them,” Dov’s daughter corrected. “At least,
as of yesterday morning. He was still there then, based on what my father said.”
Aha. So her father shared with her everything going on in the house? Ima, why are you the only one keeping secrets from us?
“But he only told us,” Penina said hastily, as if reading Chani’s thoughts. “I mean, my husband and me, and even that only after that incident with the cell phone on the yahrtzeit. You realize that after my husband got involved, my father couldn't just stay quiet and not tell us anything. But he wouldn't say a word about Martin’s story.” She tittered again. “And I’m the curious type. So if you hear something from your mother, let me know, okay?”
Hear something from your mother. From the last person who would reveal anyone else’s secrets.
“It’s hard for me to believe that my mother would tell me anything about people’s personal matters,” Chani said, almost sounding apologetic. Where was the bus? She didn’t want Yosef to wait too long for her.
“Yes, she’s really amazing about that. And how is your brother? The one in the hospital?” Oops. “Baruch Hashem.”
“Hope he gets well soon!” Penina wished her warmly. “My father is very worried about him, so it sounds. I caught him when he and your mother were in the hospital yesterday.” She was quiet for a moment. “Not that my father tells me about people’s personal things. But he always tries to answer when I call, because he knows I’m a worrywart… And I heard hospital sounds, so he asked your mother if he could tell me what was going on. That’s what he told me afterward, and she told him that he could reassure me that no one’s life was in danger, and there was no serious illness or anything. It was like dehydration or something?”
“I don’t know exactly, but something like that,” Chani said, swinging the bag from the bakery. “I haven’t heard yet what the doctors are saying.”
“But they're not worried.”
“No, not really.” Why should they be worried? Yosef came to be hospitalized after Ima and Avigdor had spent a long time trying to convince him to admit himself there. Yosef accepted anything Avigdor said almost absolutely, maybe because he was the oldest. So Avigdor had traveled from Modiin Illit to Haifa, and for the first time since Ima’s marriage, had visited the house.
It was a good thing Penina wasn’t asking her which hospital Yosef was in; she’d probably only get an answer like "Rambam." She wouldn't understand what the "Tirat Carmel Mental Health Center" was about anyway. Or rather, she would understand, and that would be the problem.
To her great relief, the 921 bus pulled up just then. ***

Yosef’s room was rather crowded. There were greenish curtains hanging between each of the four beds; his was the last one. Besides him, there was just one other patient in the room, a young teen wearing a knitted yarmulke. He was standing near the window, but when he saw Chani, he fled the room.
She glanced back at the corridor behind her. It was pretty quiet, except for a couple of people walking around in pajamas, in near silence. She didn’t see anyone else. Still, she closed the door of the room behind her, and only then approached the last bed. She hadn’t seen Yosef in so long and had no idea what was waiting for her.
He lay on the bed, eyes closed, with a clear liquid dripping through an infusion in his arm. She came closer, trying to read what it said on the bag. Just then Yosef spoke up. “Oh, you came?”
“Yup.” She forced her eyes away from the IV. “How are you, Yosef? I thought you were sleeping. I didn’t want to wake you.”
“No, I’m not sleeping,” he said heavily. “I’d even get up, but I don’t like walking around with this IV.”
Her eyes were drawn to the infusion yet again, like a magnet.
“It’s just fluids,” he said, with a laugh that sounded more like a croak. “I got dehydrated. I was hardly drinking.” He paused, and then conceded, “Now I’m trying to drink more.” He pointed with his chin to a bottle of water on the nightstand. “But I’m not doing very well.”
For a moment, it all looked like a very normal hospital, except for the name and logo that appeared on the sheets and pillows.
“When they finish giving you the fluids, what are they going to do?”
He didn’t respond. She suddenly remembered the bags she was still holding, and put them down on the floor. Were there chairs for visitors in this place?
“Don’t know,” he finally said, after five full minutes of silence. “I have a session with a psychiatrist soon.” He sighed. “He's going to want to talk to me about all kinds of things again. And about my pills.”
“When you take them, you usually feel great, don’t you?”
“Sometimes I feel very sad.”
“Every person feels very sad sometimes.”
He waved his hand in dismissal, not bothering to contradict her with words.
“Could be that he'll suggest to me afterward to move into their housing program. They have a petting zoo, a greenhouse, a school…”
“A school?”
“What would I be doing if I was thirteen now, let’s say? Of
course there’s a school.”
“You probably wouldn’t have learned there,” she said resolutely. “Is it frum?”
“I don’t know. But if the students there need help with math, I can help them. Or I can work with animals, or tend to the plants.”
“You’re good at a lot of things.”
He laughed her off, and then became quiet.
“You were also very good with the patients at Rambam. Ima always told me how happy they were with you.”
Yosef gazed wordlessly at the infusion. Chani looked at him, at the window, and at the clean floor, not knowing what to say, what to suggest, what to ask.
She picked up the bags from the floor. “I brought you a lot of good food,” she said, with forced cheerfulness. “How would you like a tasty lunch now?”
“No,” he answered heavily.
“Did you eat breakfast?”
He gave her one of his stares, the type that scared her, and remained quiet.
She finally put the bags back down. “Is there a chair anywhere? I’ll go find one in the hallway, okay?”
“I don’t want to go back to Rambam,” he said suddenly. “Or home. I'll tell the psychiatrist to hire me here for work; they're very nice in this place. If I have to work in an emergency room, I can work in theirs.”
She nodded. “Ima told me that you were very sad; that you took the passing of that patient from Rambam very hard.”
“I don’t want to go home either.”
“Why not?”
“That man is there, Ima’s, and this boy from Yerushalayim who follows me. They're hosting him, and they don’t know how bad he is.”
“The boy is from Yerushalayim or from America?”
He scratched the tip of his nose, as his eyes flitted around the room but avoided looking at her. “Don’t know. I saw him near Michoel’s house, and he’s not okay at all. Ima needs to be told that. But even if he leaves, I don’t want to go home.”
“Dov isn’t nice to you?”
“He is nice to me. But I’m not Ima’s anymore.” His words were clumsy, like a little boy’s. But he was able to express his emotions, and Chani noted to herself that despite being hospitalized, his condition seemed to be much better than it was the last time she had seen him. When was that? When had she last seen him, or Ima, for that matter? When had she last been in Haifa?
She wasn’t Ima’s anymore, either.

Q: Five years and three months ago, I was blessed with a baby boy. My beautiful baby boy has Down syndrome. I want him to have the ability to read, but I don’t know where to start. What are your thoughts?
A: Not too long ago, people believed that children with Down syndrome were unable to read and write. For this reason, those with Down syndrome were placed in special education classrooms that did not involve any reading instruction. However, recent research has shown that with the proper teaching, children with Down syndrome can proficiently read and write. Once their reading level is on par with their peers, they can even be placed into mainstream classrooms.
One mother wrote about the influence reading had on her daughter Emma:
I started to teach Emma to read [seven] years ago. She was then two years and four months of age. Emma is now nine years old and an able and avid reader. She attends our large, local, mainstream primary school and holds her own well in second year junior class. She seems
to develop in leaps and bounds. Being able to read has done so much for her.
It helped her speech. For example, when she began to read at age two, she spoke understandably but imperfectly as she left out definite and indefinite articles, prepositions, etc. The change came when she was able to sentence build in flashcards. Today her speech is mature and her teacher commented at the last parents evening that the extent of her vocabulary and her turn of phrase would leave many in the class standing.
It helped in the way other children regarded Emma and not least her own self-esteem. They knew that in reading she was among the best in the class. This apparently less able child wasn't so less able after all!
It’s hard to imagine that reading can have such profound effects, but studies show that the benefits of reading instruction on children with Down syndrome extend far beyond the classroom. In the book Speech and Language Development for Teenagers with Down Syndrome, Gillian Bird compiles a list of all the added advantages of reading:

• Vocabulary and Grammar Skills. Children with Down syndrome have difficulty learning their first language from listening. Seeing the printed words enables them to broaden their vocabulary and enhance their grammar skills.
• Language Development. With less stress on children’s working memory, they will be more likely to produce organized language. This will translate into more fluent and coherent speech.
• Life Skills. Reading is a fundamental life skill. Think about what you are doing right now! Print is all around us both for practical use (signs, street names, advertisements, instructions) and for pleasure (reading or writing a card, making a shopping list, reading a book).
• Self Confidence. Once children with Down syndrome gain the ability to read at an 8 or 9 year old level, they will be able to write letters, read newspapers, and most books. This can give them a tremendous boost of self-esteem as they are no longer reliant on others to do this work for them.

While still controversial, researchers believe so-called adrenal fatigue may be due to a dysfunction in the brain signaling portion of the HPA axis – the hypothalamus and pituitary – and not the adrenal portion of the axis.
No matter the cause, your adrenal glands continue to work under adrenal fatigue but cannot maintain normal function.

Researchers have found that ursolic acid, found in the leaves of the holy basil plant, along with other important anti-stress compounds, help maintain normal levels of the stress hormone corticosterone – and cortisone – in your blood.
Plus, holy basil supports your brain’s neurotransmitter system, which consists of chemical messengers that are involved in cognitive function, mood, sleep and bodily functions, such as blood pressure and heart rate.
There’s an herb known to be so effective at supporting you through challenging times that some experts have suggested it might be the only nutritional supplement you’d need for stress if stuck on a deserted island.
While we don’t know how true that statement may be, we can say that ashwagandha has been hailed as a regenerative and daily tonic for centuries.
Ashwagandha is a small, evergreen perennial herb that grows to about two feet tall.
Also known as Indian ginseng, winter cherry or Withania somnifera, ashwagandha is widely considered the “King of the Herbal Kingdom.”
Referred to as rayasana in Ayurveda, it’s considered the number one goto herb in India’s traditional herbal practice.
As an adaptogen, ashwagandha helps your body and mind adapt to stress. It supports your brain, nervous
system and adrenal health, and it helps enhance your energy supplies and memory.
This in turn helps your body deal with internal and external stressors and supports your immune function. Ashwagandha, revered for its stressreducing effects, works by promoting healthy levels of cortisol and maintaining the normal balance of other hormones.

While ashwagandha’s two most important bioactive constituents are alkaloids and withanolides, Ayurvedic experts believe the potential benefits of the roots come from a synergistic effect of all of its many components.
One of the most exciting discoveries about ashwagandha is that it increases an important antioxidant in your body called glutathione, which is essential for healthy cell development and your body’s detoxification processes.
Known as the “master antioxidant,” glutathione is especially needed for cells and tissues that come into frequent contact with free radicals and experience lots of wear and tear.
As you age, glutathione levels in your brain decline, as well as the blood flow to the central part of your brain (your hippocampus). These two conditions create a “perfect storm” for damage to your brain cells.

Also known as Chinese magnolia vine, schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) was the very first herb to be named an adaptogen by Russian scientists in the 1940s.
Schisandra chinensis is a plant that produces flowers and small, deep red fruits. The plant’s berries are famous for their five distinct flavors: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and pungent.
Traditionally, the fruits have been used in both Chinese and Russian traditional practice for fatigue and
promoting overall well-being. For their use in Russian traditional practice, the fruits are air-dried and then extracted with ethanol.
According to the Chinese traditional practitioners, schisandra is considered beneficial to Qi, or the life force or energy found in all living things. It’s believed to have a positive effect on several meridians, or energy pathways, in the body, including the lungs, heart and kidneys.
The major components of schisandra appear to be its lignans – more than 30 different types. Present in the fruits at high levels, they are very different from other lignans.
The lignans in schisandra are structurally unique and active by themselves. Some of them act as antioxidants and may offer protection to the nerves and liver.
One of the most important groups of antioxidant lignans in schisandra are the schizandrins. This group is responsible for a wide array of beneficial cellular actions.

A classic starter in French bistros, this warm goat cheese salad is chock full of flavors and textures to brighten up your meal.
Ingredients:
3-4 cups chopped Romaine lettuce or Spring Mix
¾ cup grape tomatoes, sliced in halves
1 ripe avocado, thinly sliced into ‘fans’
½ cup sliced black olives
½ purple onion, thinly sliced
2 mini logs Natural & Kosher Herbed Goat Cheese
½ cup flour
2 eggs, whisked
1 cup Taanug Panko-Style Corn Flakes Crumbs or breadcrumbs
Oil, for frying
Maple Vinaigrette
½ cup olive oil
3 tablespoons vinegar of choice (balsamic, red wine, or white wine vinegar)
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
2 medium cloves garlic, crushed
¼ teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Directions:
1. Vinaigrette: In a small jar or container, add all the ingredients and shake the mixture until emulsified. Refrigerate until ready to use.
2. Goat Cheese Croutons: Place the flour, whisked egg, and panko crumbs in 3 separate shallow plates. Slice the goat cheese into 1” slices. Dip each slice into the flour, then egg, then panko crumbs.
3. Heat oil in a frying pan or Betty Crocker. Fry the breaded goat cheese on both sides until golden brown. Pat dry with a paper towel.
4. Salad Assembly: In a large serving bowl, or in individual plates, layer the lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, purple onion, and sliced avocado. Top with the goat cheese croutons and drizzle with the vinaigrette. Serve while the croutons are warm.
The savory cream cheese filling on these tartlets make the perfect canvas for any topping you like.
Yield: 16 Tartlets
Ingredients:
16 small puff pastry squares
1 egg, whisked for the wash
1 cup cream cheese
¼ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 tablespoon parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon dijon mustard- optional
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1 clove fresh garlic, crushed
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon parsley flakes
4 tablespoons black olives
4 Tuscannini sundried tomato, chopped
3 tablespoons olive oil
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 425° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Lay the puff pastry on the sheet. Using a sharp knife, score a light square inside each pastry (½’ in from the corners), don’t cut down to the bottom. Brush the pastries with egg wash and set aside.
3. In a small bowl, combine the cheeses, dijon mustard, mayonnaise, garlic powder, black pepper, and parsley. Mix with a fork until smooth.
4. Using a teaspoon, place a dollop of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each tart. Flatten into a square shape.
5. Top with black olives and sundried tomatoes, or any other topping of your choice. Drizzle with olive oil.
6. Bake for 15 min until golden brown. Serve warm.

Brie is not your typical cheese. With an interesting taste and aroma, you’ll either love it or push it aside. So, for the Brie-lovers out there, here is a delicious and simple recipe to add to your brunch repertoire.
Ingredient:
1 sheet puff pastry
1 rind of Natural & Kosher Brie Cheese
1 cube frozen sauteed onion
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
Garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 400° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Thaw the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough into a square or circle.
3. In a small bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients, except the brie cheese.
4. Transfer the rolled puff pastry to the lined baking sheet.
5. Place the brie in the center of the pastry square. Spoon the walnut mixture on top of the brie. Fold the ends of the puff pastry towards the top of the brie, to create a packet. Make sure it’s well sealed so the cheese doesn't melt out. If the dough is too large, you can snip it at the ends.
6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool for about 5-10 minutes so the cheese doesn’t completely ooze out. Garnish with a fresh sprig of thyme.
7. To serve, cut open a slit of the puff pastry and place crackers alongside for easy dipping.

ADuring the spring and summer, most grasses, trees, and other plants take part in a tradition; shooting their reproductive cells into the air so that they might get caught by the wind, land on another plant, and fertilize it, eventually producing a seed. Each cell is packaged in a hard protective shell, forming a tiny grain of pollen. Although these pollen grains are meant to land on other plants, some end up in a different place: inside your nose. For most people, this isn't a big deal. But for many, pollen from specific species — including trees like pine and birch, weeds such as ragweed, and various grasses — can trigger a rather unfortunate response from the immune system. Last week we discussed what the bank will look at when providing a loan. This week’s topic is about the process when applying for a loan.
The reason we aren't discussing how to look for a house and what to look out for in a purchase, is because before you begin looking for a house, you should first speak with your Mortgage Broker/ Loan Officer so that you know what you qualify for and what you can afford. We will discuss that in one of the coming episodes, IyH.
When a family starts looking for their dream home or if someone wants to buy an investment property, they first should speak with a loan officer; he/she will explain the mortgage process and discuss your options.
You need to know how much money is required for the down payment and closing costs, and what your monthly mortgage payment would be and then see if you can afford it.
Once you’re aware of how much money is required and you are ready to start looking for a house, it's time to make sure you are eligible for a mortgage.
There are 4 C’s the lender will check, therefore the loan officer will go through these with you to make sure you possess them: Capacity, Capital, Collateral, and Credit.
Capacity to Pay Back the Loan; as discussed in the past episodes, the lenders will check your ability to repay the loan by reviewing your income and liabilities.
Therefore, your loan officer will evaluate your income and liabilities to make sure that you are eligible for the loan you are looking to get. The loan officer will ask for your ID, social security number, recent tax returns etc., to make sure your income will qualify and your loan will be approved

If, for whatever reason, you do not have enough income, your loan officer might have other options for you to still be able to get a loan. For example, you can use a cosigner/ co-borrower on your loan. If you and your co-signer/ co-borrower together qualify, then you might get approved for your loan.

I am a teacher and getting paid parsonage income, can I use it to qualify for a mortgage?
Answer:
In general, parsonage income, which is the compensation provided to members of the clergy (religious officials such as Rabbis, Teachers, etc.) could be used for income to get you qualified.
Parsonage income is typically considered tax-exempt, meaning it is not subject to federal income taxes. You will usually need a VOE (verification of employment) and copies of the checks for the last 12 months.
Since it's tax exempt (and same applies to all tax exempted income like Social Security benefits, child support payments, alimony, etc.) it could be grossed up by 25%. For example, every $1,000 would be considered as $1,250.

It is hard to believe that it has been a year since the passing of my Rebbi, Rabbi Wallerstein. So much has been written and said about his middos tovos and genuine concern for klal yisroel. During his life, he has always taught us everlasting lessons in perseverance and fortitude. He was a very big proponent of not victimizing yourself, and instead, focusing on whatever you went through and using that pain to catapult yourself into being a success. His lessons were constantly about using whatever you went through to push yourself forward to become better, and to make the world better. Rabbi Wallerstein exemplified this message, via his own pain and difficulties in life, which translated into life lessons for his students. Rabbi Wallerstein spoke about a person’s unique ability to overcome challenges through using their “struggle muscle”. During one of his shiurim, Rebbi mentioned how he had researched various precious metals; coming to the conclusion that gold, silver, and copper come from the ground, but yet, a pearl, comes from an oyster. Hakadosh Baruch Hu, in his infinite kindness created millions of plankton in the ocean. All the oyster has to do, is open his mouth, and it receives a constant food source. Though, there are times during various currents in the water, that a kernel of sand may become lodged inside the oyster. This creates pain and unease. Once again, Hashem, in His chessed, allows the oyster to secrete a liquid and coat the sand with layers of fluid called aragonite and conchiolin. Once it does this secretion, eventually, the oyster can produce a pearl. Rebbi explained that through the struggle with this kernel of sand that the oyster has to go though, it creates something wonderful and brilliant. So too, in our lives, when we go through challenges,
we can also forge through and shine bright.
At his hesped, a good friend of mine, Jeff Stern esq, who is also a talmid of Rabbi Wallerstein mentioned that Rebbi believed in not being a dreamer, but a doer. Many people talk about doing things, but don’t actually do them. He would say how a person has to act like Nachshon Ben Aminadav and jump in, even though he may not know what the outcome may be, and yet, a person should realize that when you are doing the right thing, Hashem will take over and make the sea split.
Coming off the recent yom tov of Pesach, Rabbi Wallerstein would often cite a parable about how Hakadosh Baruch Hu is the Prince, and we, Klal Yisroel are His princesses. During one such story, he mentioned how there was a prince from a country journeying to a second country to meet his future wife, the future princess. Along the journey, the prince suddenly mentions to his wagon driver to stop. Along the side of the road, he sees a ragged, dirty figure waving her hand. Motioning to his wagon driver to stop, he decides to speak to her and ask her why she is so dirty, and is on the side of the road. She explains that she is collecting alms for the poor, and comes every day to collect charity because she is so poor. The prince, in his benevolence, decides to tell his entourage to allow this figure to come with him and return to the palace. When the prince’s entourage heard this, they vehemently opposed the prince’s decision and reminded him that he was on the way to another country to meet his future wife. Nevertheless, the Prince mentioned that he would actually want to marry this woman and even allowed her passage back to the palace. At the palace, everyone
was in shock, amazement, and bewilderment as to why the prince would bring this wretched specimen back to the palace. Once there, he ordered his attendants to clean up and dress the woman as befitting a royal, to make her appearance presentable for dinner that night. Upon entering the dinner, the entire palace was in shock and awe as to the person attending. Surely this was not the person that the prince found on the side of the road earlier that day.
But as this woman lived in the forest, though she looked presentable, she did not have the proper eating etiquette as befitting a princess. Once again, the prince ordered his attendants to teach her the proper way to act as a royal. After a while, this future princess learned all the mannerisms and customs befitting a future queen. Due to the fact that this woman came from such a meager, and humble background, not only was she a kind princess, she went out of her way to help the poor, and downtrodden.
This mashal exemplifies the story of klal yisroel, who were “downtrodden” and “dirty” during their years in Mitzrayim. It was through the benevolent love of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, that He decided to make us his very own “princess”. Though it took time, we eventually became a most deserving nation - Klal Yisroel.
The messages of perseverance, persistence and a understanding that Hashem has always and will always love us no matter what we go through, were a bedrock of chizuk and encouragement to all who had the fortune of knowing Rabbi Wallerstein.
May his neshama have an aliyah, and may he continue to storm the Kisei Hakavod in search of continued rachamim for Klal Yisroel.

When I decided to get my first smartphone, I also decided that I would not allow myself to get addicted. The phone would help me for work purposes, and that’s all.
My resolution was firm, but with time, I must admit, it began to unravel. It happened slowly, without my even realizing it… I found myself toying with my phone more and more.
I never took those two steps back to look at myself from afar and realize how far I’d gone. I never wanted to acknowledge the fact that I was slipping into the technological whirlpool, getting sucked into its depths. I was too immersed in what I was doing – and I hardly realized how deep I had dipped.
Then, one day, an accident happened. I tripped over some wires right in the middle of my office floor. I brushed myself off and continued about my business, but my hand was throbbing. When the pain and swelling would not subside, I made myself an appointment at an orthopedist. Sure enough, my wrist was fractured.
With my brand new wrist splint, my mobility was
restricted. I couldn’t write, type, or cut, and I couldn’t move my fingers well.
Suddenly, I came face to face with reality: I had been spending much of my waking hours swishing my fingers across my phone’s screen. I only realized it now – when I couldn’t tap, swipe, or drag.
Being a strong righty, I could not rely on my left hand fingers to do the work. I was on forced vacation. Goodbye phone, goodbye apps. My social media friends had to contend with my absence as I allowed my bones to heal.
I went through withdrawal symptoms. When I was hooked to my phone, my constant need to be connected raised my stress levels. As I came to terms with my new reality –without any texting – I realized how much calmer and more focused I could be.
It was then that I learned of the social media detox concept, a 30-day elimination of social media use, which specialists in the outside world recommend! Some suggest going for a full cleanse, others set limits or delete apps, all in the name of breaking social media addiction and the negative side effects it often brings.
I went into the healing process full force – not by choice, but by default. And I never looked back.

One day, a man came into his study and told the Rebbe about his hard life. He explained how he has so many problems, no money and sick kids. The Rebbe put his hand in his draw, and took out a huge sum of money. He handed it to the man with a Bracha.
As soon as the man left the Rebbe’s study, and the Gabbai saw who had just been there, he ran into the Rebbe. “Rebbe, this man is a liar. He is a known liar. He tries to get people to give him money, even though he doesn’t need it.” The Gabbi explained.
“Baruch Hashem!” the Rebbe replied, “I’m so happy to hear that the problems he spoke about are not true. Baruch Hashem!”
