Stefano Cherchi 2001 - 2024

A Remembrance Service was held this morning in Newmarket for Stefano Cherchi, who tragically passed away earlier this month at the age of 23, following a fall whilst race riding in Australia.

We would therefore like to invite everyone present at the Racecourse today to join us in a moment’s silence in Stefano’s memory, which will take place around the Parade Ring ahead of the first race.

The condolences of everyone at the Racecourse and across British horseracing go to Stefano’s friends, family and colleagues.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down;

P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

LAST TIME OUT | THURSDAY 28TH MARCH

Our last meeting saw Goldwyn justify the market support in the opening race for trainer Mark Walford and jockey Jamie Hamilton.

The seven-year-old was prominent and a good jump at the last saw him ensure there wasn’t any danger of Breizh River cutting the deficit in the closing stages. It appeared as though the Paul Robson-trained six-year-old might mount a serious challenge, but the gelding weakened towards the finish.

The following race saw a much more emphatic victory, with Art Of Diplomacy storming to a 16-length success for trainers Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole. Charlie Hammond was on board and the pair went clear when approaching the last There had been support for Made For You but the nine-year-old weakened during the run-in and was no match for the winner.

It was another comfortable victory in the third race of the day with Royal Mer winning by six-and-a-half lengths to Contre Ordre in second. The David Pipe-trained six-year-old with Jack Tudor on board went second at the sixth before challenge when three out. He then took the lead when two out and went clear during the closing stages Beat The Edge and Sword Of Fate finished third and fourth respectively.

The fourth race, the Full Circle Series At Punchestown Festival Handicap Hurdle, saw Montregard take the honours for trainer Tom

Lacey and jockey Stan Sheppard. Magical King finished second for Stuart Edmonds and Al Kalila third for Stuart Crawford Montregard didn’t produce a particularly fluent round of jumping but kept on well during the closing stages to secure a one length victory.

There was another emphatic win in the following race with Imperial Alex cruising to an 11-length success for Lacey and Sheppard to complete a double. The seven-year-old went off at 4/7 and despite a mistake when two out, he went clear at the last to ensure there wasn’t to be a battle with Ballynagran.

Kinder Kid found just enough to fend off the danger from It’s Maisy in the penultimate race of the day to win by a neck for trainer Tina Jackson and jockey Ross Chapman. Although he went off favourite, he was certainly made to work hard for the win with It’s Maisy staying on well in the closing moments.

Another excellent day of racing here at Wetherby was then completed with Jupiter Des Mottes winning by three-and-threequarter lengths for Nicky Richards and jockey Danny McMenamin. Get The Beat and Farmer Jimmy finished second and third respectively.

THE BUZZ by

RACE ONE

LINGUA FRANCA made all in a similar race at Haydock on the last of her two starts as a juvenile and, given the form was significantly boosted by the runner-up winning a class 2 at Newmarket’s Craven meeting, there is good reason to expect Sir Mark Presott’s filly to cope with the 7lb penalty. Danielle is an obvious threat, despite being turned over at odds-on at Chelmsford 15 days ago, while Lady La Fay is a notable debutant.

WIN: LINGUA FRANCA

RACE TWO

DANGER: DANIELLE

The likes of Good Morning Alex, Shaws Phoenix and Nominal Event have all shown enough promise to suggest they have a race of this nature within their grasp However, HAVANA PRINCE, who won off 1lb higher at Newcastle last September, made a pleasing return to turf when second at Catterick on Wednesday and, having done his best work near the finish that day, this step up in trip could be ideal.

WIN: HAVANA PRINCE

RACE THREE

DANGER: GOOD MORNING ALEX

GUNLOCK (second) won a maiden at Newcastle 20 days ago and, with the the promise of plenty more to come, this gelded son of Into Mischief is hard to ignore despite this being his debut run on turf Both Eastvan and Cabrillo arrive on the back of long absences, so a bigger threat is posed by Gemstar (third), who was only half a length behind the selection when they met on the all-weather last month.

WIN: GUNLOCK

RACE FOUR

DANGER: GEMSTAR

HARSWELL DUKE has been kept busy since disappointing in the Spring Mile at Doncaster last month. The latest of his efforts, which came off this mark at Pontefract on Monday, was an excellent second given that he bumped into an improver. With that in mind, this could be the day that the son of Garswood is able to regain the winning thread. Ey Up Its The Boss should step forward from his seasonal return at Ripon, while others to note include Admiral Nelson and Dream Pirate.

WIN: HARSWELL DUKE

RACE FIVE

DANGER: EY UP ITS THE BOSS

A steadily progressive sort last season, MANILA SCOUSE finished a creditable fourth in 0-105 company at Doncaster in October Eased 2lb in the ratings and dropped markedly in class ahead of his return, Tim Easterby’s gelding could stamp his authority in these calmer waters. Illusionist is now 4lb higher than for his recent Ripon second but remains of interest, along with the likes of Mountain Warrior and Mythical Phoenix, who makes his debut for the Julie Camacho team.

WIN: MANILA SCOUSE

RACE SIX

DANGER: ILLUSIONIST

BALLYARE showed more when finishing fourth in a class 5 event at Doncaster on his return to turf last month and has been dropped 2lb for that display. The son of Hot Streak competes off a career-low mark and could be the one to beat. Special Mayson was a disappointing favourite over 6f at Yarmouth earlier in the month, but he is worth another chance off a 1lb lower rating. Phoenix Star completes the shortlist from his plum draw

WIN: BALLYARE

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: SPECIAL MAYSON

MY NOBLE LORD clearly strengthened over the winter after being gelded, as he put his poor form from last year well behind him when scoring comfortably on his handicap bow at Wolverhampton. Michael Bell’s representative is 9lb higher, but this step up in trip could unlock even more improvement. Flowering has been really consistent this year without winning, but she remains on the same mark as for Thursday’s Beverley second and is likely to be on the premises. Filibustering warrants a market check on his handicap debut.

WIN: MY NOBLE LORD

DANGER: FLOWERING

RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is a Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile and two furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

PLAY SMARTER

A tricky opener to solve but it’s hard to ignore the claims of DANIELLE who took a big step forward stepped up in trip when pulling clear with a very-well-bred Godolphin filly at Chelmsford earlier this month so John & Thady Gosden’s charge can go one better at the expense of Lingua Franca, who promises to have more to offer as a 3-y-o now stepping up to 1 1/4m. Debutante Lady La Fay can edge out Cabrera for third spot.

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): L Russell (7 wins from 47 runners, 15%) runs JOHN L SULLIVAN

Longest Traveller: JOHN L SULLIVAN trained by L Russell, Kinross, 216 miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 58. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of seven furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
