I would like to warmly welcome all racegoers to the Curragh today for our first Classic of the 2024 flat racing season – the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas.
Many thanks to all owners with runners here today – we appreciate your support - and to our race sponsors - Irish Stallion Farms, Tally Ho Stud, GAIN, Weatherbys Ireland, Al Basti Equiworld Dubai,
Infinite Energy, Finlay Volvo, McDonnells Bar Newbridge and of course our feature race sponsor Tattersalls who are fantastic partners and great supporters of Irish racing.
The Gain Marble Hill Stakes is being run today in memory of the late Theresa Marnane a much loved and sadly missed member of the Irish bloodstock community. We welcome Con, Amy, Olivia and many of Theresa’s family and friends here today.
We are delighted with the declared runners for all races and there is competitive racing throughout. After racing, there is music by Nitetrain in the Champions Hall.
For sports fans, we will have TVs showing the rugby and soccer finals and of course, we have our fingers crossed for a Leinster victory.
Our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.
We race again here tomorrow where the twin features are the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas and the Tattersalls Gold Cup.
Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh many more times during the year.
Best Wishes, Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive bkavanagh@curragh.ie

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
A right handed horseshoe-shaped track of 2 miles with no sharp bends and a run-in of 3 furlongs. This combined with a steady uphill finish makes it ideal for the galloping type The 5 and 6 furlongs contests are run on the straight course.

THE CURRAGH AND GAIN ARE PLEASED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE SAD PASSING OF THERESA MARNANE BY RUNNING THE GAIN MARBLE HILL STAKES IN HER MEMORY.
Theresa was a hugely popular member of the racing and breeding industry alongside her husband Con and daughters Amy and Olivia.
The family’s Tipperary-based Bansha House Stables have been very successful at the breeze-up sales, with graduates including top-level winners Rio De La Plata, Sands Of Mali, Fleeting Spirit, and Amadeus Wolf. Racing Post Trophy (G1) winner Palace Episode and last year’s GAIN Marble Hill Stakes (G3) winner Givemethebeatboys are among the horses to have carried the Marnane’s yellow and black silks to group-race victories on the track. Different League also carried the silks when beating Alpha Centauri in the Albany Stakes (G3) at Royal Ascot in 2017.
We are delighted to welcome Con, Amy, Olivia and other members of their family and friends to the races today.

Thethirdraceontoday’seight-racecard is the Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes, a Group 2 contest which takes place over six furlongs and the 13-strong field is headed by last year’s winner ArtPower.
Tim Easterby’s grey is unbeaten in three starts over today’s course-and-distance and ran out a convincing winner 12 months ago. The seven-year-old added a fourth course success – over the minimum trip – in the Group 2 Sapphire StakeslastJulyandhissoledefeatatthe CurraghcameinGroup1company. Havingendedlastseasonwithafirstwin atthetoplevel–intheBritishChampions Sprint at Ascot – he warmed up for the defence of his crown with a fifth placing in the Duke Of York Clipper Stakes just 10 days ago. He finished eighth in that race last year and can be expected to strip fitter for the outing once again. Although he is versatile in terms of ground, a little rainwouldfurtherincreaseconfidence.
Art Power is unbeaten in three starts over today’s course-and-distance
Richard Hannon’s four-year-old ShouldvebeenaringfinishedinfrontofArt PoweratYorkbutis2lbsworseoffandas thatwashisthirdstartofanalreadybusy campaign, it remains to be seen as to whetherhehasasmuchimprovementin the locker, fitness wise. The Havana Grey colt did improve with racing last season and saved his best efforts for Haydock, where he finished runner-up to Little Big Bear in the Sandy Lane and was beaten justaneckbyRegionalintheSprintCup.
Ed Bethell’s Regional shoulders a Group 1 penalty for that success and the sixyear-old hasn’t been seen since. He did win first-time-out last year – albeit in handicap company – and the Bethell stable has been among the winners of late, so there are positives surrounding hischance.
TothefrontofthehomedefenceisMoss Tucker, a three-time course winner who lookedasgoodaseverwhenwinningthe Woodlands Stakes at Naas last month. He won the same Listed race last year but ran again – just six days earlier –before finishing sixth (beaten 12 lengths) inthisrace.AgainbehindArtPowerinthe Sapphire Stakes, he reversed form when winningtheGroup1FlyingFiveStakesand anotherbigrunlooksonthecards.
The four-year-old filly Ocean Quest finished runner-up at Naas and caught the eye with how she ran on. She has a bittofindonall-knownformbutremains open to plenty of improvement and represents the in-form stable of Jessica Harrington.
Another course-and-distance winner, Big Gossey finished 7 lengths ahead of Ocean Quest in the Renaissance Stakes here in September but Charles O’Brien’s seven-year-old hasn’t been in the same forminfourstartsthistermandwaswell behindintheWoodlands.
Unequal Love and Easy are another pair of four-year-old fillies who won on reappearance and could be open to further improvement as they go up in class, whilst Matilda Picotte might find thisalittlesharpasshedropsindistance.
Art Power seems to grow another leg when he comes to these shores, and this was his third win in as many starts at the Curragh. He shot out like a rocket out of the stalls and the way he blitzed along in front, it was hard to see anything getting to him. When asked to step it up a gear under Oisin Murphy, he found plenty for pressure and proved his love for the course once again. Big Gossey had to follow his shadow the entire race but outrun his odds of 25/1 to grab second, a further five lengths back, while market rival Garrus was never involved.

Guineas were a currency used from the 1600’s to the 1800’s.
Used in Great Britain, Guineas were phased out with the introduction of the pound and was a niche currency with it’s use only common in legal fields and livestock auctions. A guinea is equivalent to £1.05.

The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh. Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-year-old generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse.
The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger.
The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older.
Tattersalls are Europe’s largest bloodstock auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From their base at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year and host the most prestigious bloodstock sales, notably the October Yearling Sale which sees millions spent on racing’s next best prospects.

The Curragh would like to thank Moyglare Stud for their support of the Stable Staff Canteen for their 2024 racing season.
The Curragh Racecourse extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the late Sir Anthony O’Reilly who sadly passed away last Saturday, May 18th.
Sir Anthony was a giant of the business and sporting worlds as well as a successful racehorse owner and race sponsor. Through the sponsorship of the Independent Newspapers Pretty Polly Stakes, the Waterford Wedgewood Phoenix Stakes and the Castlemartin and La Louviere Studs Gladness Stakes, Sir Anthony was a great friend and welcome visitor to the Curragh.
In a lifetime of many great achievements, Sir Anthony will always be remembered with fondness here at the Curragh.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
A phenomenal miler last year who ended up winning four times at the highest level, Paddington took the step up in grade right in his stride. Coming here off quite a low-key preparation and with plenty to find on ratings, he proved that the O’Brien and Moore factor was as strong as ever The son of Siyouni travelled powerfully throughout, albeit after a tardy start, and was much the best in the finish to defy stablemate Cairo who was a further two lengths behind. Hi Royal was well supported after his runner-up medal at Newmarket but had to settle for third.
2024 will mark the 103rd running of the Irish 2,000 Guineas. In February 2023, Tattersalls renewed their sponsorship of the first two of the Irish Classics, this race and the 1,000 Guineas for fillies.
The first Irish Classic race of the year which was first run in 1921, a year before the launch of the Irish 1,000 Guineas. The inaugural running was won by Soldennis. It is Ireland’s equivalent of the 2,000 Guineas which was named after the original value of the race.
The race has seen its fair share of drama over the years. In 1944 Good Morning dead-heated with form rival Slide On, and in the 1967 renewal Kingfisher passed the post in front but was relegated to second after a lengthy stewards enquiry, giving the race to the Stephen Quirke-trained and Buster Parnell-ridden Atherstone Wood.
Traditionally British raiders have had a good record in the Irish Guineas and in the 1990’s it returned to Britain eight times.
In more recent years Aidan O’Brien has clawed back control for the Emerald Isle and from 2000 there has been almost an even split, with 10 winners from Britain and the remaining 12 from Ireland. The British look to have a solid hand in this year’s renewal.
There are two jockeys tied at a record five wins.
Tommy Burns registered his five between 1921 and 1948, with his last win coming aboard Beau Sabreur.
Martin Quirke was one of his chief rivals during that period, with his wins also spanning around that time. His last triumph came seven years prior to Khosro.
Joseph O’Brien managed to win the race three times on the bounce before pursuing a career as a trainer, like his father.
Of today’s crop, Ryan Moore leads the way with three wins after his success in last year’s renewal on Paddington.
The smallest ever field was in 1969, when Right Tack saw off four rivals to win for trainer John Sutcliffe and jockey Geoff Lewis. Hotfoot trailed in second and Agriatore finished back in third.
There have been three times in which the race was contested by 21 runners.
In 1961 Light Year came out on top in the first big field renewal, winning under Garnie Bougoure, and four years later Green Banner won the 1965 renewal under N Brennan for trainer Kevin Kerr.
21 went to post again in 1977, in which Pampaul came out on top under Gianfranco Dettori.
Only once has the result of the Irish 2,00 Guineas come down to a dead heat.
In 1944, Slide On and Good Morning couldn’t be separated at the post by the judge, with jockeys Jack Moylan and Jimmy Eddery sharing the spoils. There was three lengths back to Pacifier in third.
The fastest winning time in the Guineas was set by Cockney Rebel in 2007, the time in question was a blink and you’ll miss it 1:36:10.
Phoenix Of Spain came closest in 2019 to breaking this record with a time of 1:36:52.
John and Sue Magnier have had a very good record in this race, winning ten renewals since 1950. Their first came in 1999 with Saffron Walden, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Olivier Peslier.
Two and three followed shortly in 2001, 2002 and from 2008 - 2017, they have won the race seven times with success again in 2023.
In the last ten years favourites have been very much the ones to side with. There have been five winning favourites since 2013, with only two winning at a double figure price. The biggest of these was Romanised in 2018.
There have been several of O’Brien’s to win this race but the two in question are the legendary Vincent and more recently Aidan. The former won the race four times, with his first success coming in 1978 with Jaazeiro. Prince Of Birds granted him his final victory in the race in 1988.
This was only the beginning of the O’Brien success as only nine years later, Aidan won the race in 1997 Since then, he’s gone on to have a stranglehold on the race, winning it 12 times and becoming the leading trainer.
There have been 11 winners of the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas who have gone on to win the Irish Derby.
1922 winner Spike Island became the first, only a year after the first running of the race. He won the Guineas in facile fashion, winning by four lengths for trainer Peter Gilpin. Four years later Embargo emulated the success, followed up two years later by Baytown.
In the 1930’s both Museum (1935) and Phideas (1937) did the Classic double, while three horses managed the feat in consecutive years in the 1940’s - Windsor Slipper (1942), The Phoenix (1943) and Slide On (1944).
The top class Santa Claus followed it up 20 years later in 1964, winning for Michael Rogers under William Burke, with the legendary Grundy also achieving the double in 1975. Desert King (1997) is the most recent horse to do the double.

Aidan O’Brien has landed this race on 12 occasions and his three runners are respected on their seasonal reappearances. UNQUESTIONABLE looks a leading contender after successfully stepping up to 1m in a Grade 1 at the Breeders’ Cup in Santa Anita. Richard Hannon’s Rosallion sets the standard with a rating of 118 and a runner-up berth in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. He is by a sprinter, though, and this more galloping track may not be as ideal for him. O’Brien’s River Tiber is interesting as he bids to graduate from the sprinting ranks, while Andrew Oliver’s Bright Stripes is one that could go better than his odds suggest.

SAFECRACKER is well versed in high-quality handicaps and holds each-way claims. Johnny Murtagh’s charge was unplaced in a Group 3 on soft ground at Naas last summer, but is a different proposition on quick ground at this track. Crystal Black has to be feared having won three of his last four races at this venue The handicapper has tacked on another 4lb, but he does run this track particularly well. Deakin is one to note up in class after two wide-margin victories at Roscommon and Thurles, while Take Heart and Saturn, who both sport first-time cheekpieces, are other contenders. French-import Titanium is the dark horse in the field.

The Lyons team have always believed that RAGGA BOMB is a horse for this season and he could be worth chancing on handicap debut. His Cork maiden success has been very well franked by the third home, who is now rated 100 After winning on debut at this racecourse, Democracy kept excellent company last season without being placed and he ought to appreciate this easier assignment. This is Nerano’s first try on turf after winning one of his three Dundalk races and the forecast fast ground should be right up his street, being by War Front. Transcending Glory and Grand City Hall arrive in winning form and will have their supporters.

Newcomer JAN BRUEGHEL jumps off the page as a brother to Irish Derby winner Sovereign and, notably, he holds an Irish Derby entry in addition to a Group 2 engagement. Ozark Daze caught a tartar when runner-up at Dundalk last month and didn’t have the clearest run in fourth over this trip in Cork. His mark of 87 means that he should be involved. Camelot colt Rosso is worth checking for market strength ahead of his debut, while Raydamann makes appeal on breeding and should improve upon an opening eighth-placed finish on testing ground at Leopardstown in October The in-form Jessica Harrington takes the wraps off Trethorn and a big run wouldn’t be surprising.
WIN: JAN BRUEGHEL

KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH ALL NEWS, VIEWS & GOSSIP FROM THE COURSE
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
