We race again here at the Curragh on Wednesday June 5th and of course the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby meeting on June 28th – 30th is fast approaching.
Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh for these meetings and many more times during the year.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

COLD HEARTED made a pleasing debut when third to Sparkling Sea and Fairy Godmother over a similar trip at Naas last month. The form of that race has been working out well since and the Jessica Harrington yard continues in great form. Heavens Gate is an obvious threat having also shaped well on debut when runner-up to the well-backed Unexpected Issues at Navan, while Queens Fury and Twinkling Toes also made promising debuts. And So To Bed is a Kodiac half-sister to three juvenile winners from a stable with a good line on juvenile form, while Grande Marques is by Starspangledbanner and from a family which connections have enjoyed plenty of success with.

Asian Daze gained a third career win when making an impressive reappearance over 7f here earlier this month, beating SLUICE by three and a half lengths. However, the Joseph O’Brien-trained filly could be suited by the combination of moving up to a mile and this sounder surface, so may reverse the form on 10lb better terms. Flight Of Fancy takes a drop in class after her fourth in a Naas Group 3 and the step back in trip could suit, while Zaynab showed a smart turn of foot to snatch a 7f maiden here last month. Evening Blossom and September Leaves are two to consider on their handicap debut with useful claimers booked.

Ryan Moore produced a masterclass on last year’sTattersallsGoldCupwinnerLuxembourg who provided Aidan O’Brien with a recordextending tenth win in this contest. The wellfancied Vadeni ran no sort of race in a strong renewal which left two high class sorts battling out the finish. Moore set out some reasonable early fractions and stacked his rivals behind him turning for home and dug deep to defy the Ascot Champion Stakes winner Bay Bridge by half a length. The pair were in a different class on the day and pulled a further six lengths clear of Piz Badile

WHITE BIRCH must turn around the Epsom and Irish Derby form with Auguste Rodin but has had a better preparation. Ground-versatile, he was beaten a little over five lengths by Auguste Rodin in the Derby and, while disappointing in the Irish version, he’s looked better than ever this year Auguste Rodin flopped for a third time in March’s Sheema Classic and while two of those disappointments were on seasonal reappearances, he also failed in the King George last July. This race has been his target since Meydan and, while better can be expected, he needs his best to beat the selection in his current mood. Lumiere Rock finished third in October’s Prix de l’Opera and is noted along with Elegant Man.

Guineas were a currency used from the 1600’s to the 1800’s.
Used in Great Britain, Guineas were phased out with the introduction of the pound and was a niche currency with it’s use only common in legal fields and livestock auctions.
A guinea is equivalent to £1.05.

The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh.
Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-year-old generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse
The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger.
The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older. LEGENDARY

OPERA SINGER was a top juvenile last year and while she missed the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket having met with a setback, it is encouraging she contests this Classic. By City Of Troy’s sire Justify, she has her first run as a three-year-old and meets high-class, race-fit rivals, although she did win the Prix Marcel Boussac by five lengths last October and looks up to the task. Vespertilio finished a close third in the French equivalent and while she has proven recent form, she would probably prefer some cut in the ground. She was beaten by Fallen Angel here last September, but the UK raider does need to improve on her Newmarket exploits.

The Curragh would like to acknowledge the generous support of Scott Heider and his family today and celebrate their growing association with horse racing in Ireland.
Scott Heider and his family has been involved with racing in Ireland for eight years now. The history of the Irish horse is what initially drew them in and caused them to expand their racing operation from the States to Ireland.
“It’s just been a fantastic experience for us. We love our partnership with Joseph O’Brien and we’ve been very fortunate to race some talented individuals on Irish racecourses the last few years.
Horse Racing Ireland has been a pleasure to work with as they always seem to go out of there way to make sure our experience is quite special.”
“I began racing and breeding thoroughbreds with my father 26 years ago in The States. We’ve enjoyed some terrific times and been blessed with a number of high calibre horses including 2019 Grade I winner “Mia Mischief”.
But there’s something extra special about racing in Ireland with its incredible history.”
The Heider’s success has been marked with victories on some of racing’s biggest days. Crossfirehurricane won on debut at Limerick and followed that up with three successive victories, notably in the Listed Patton Stakes at Dundalk and then the Gallinule Stakes, which they sponsored earlier in the season.
Agartha is another smart mare that Scott has on his hands in the Joseph O’Brien stable. She landed the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown in fantastic style, before kicking on again to land the Debutante Stakes here at the Curragh. She has showed she remains a top force too with two seconds in Group 3 company, before stepping up to the top ranks here at the Curragh when a solid fifth in the 1,000 Guineas, won by Homeless Song. She will be hoping to get back to Group success this season.
More recently, the five-year-old Brostaigh has proved to be a classy sprinter. She contested the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Flying Five Stakes here in 2022 but has yet to been seen since, while their three year old colt Stromberg contests their sponsored race today after finishing second at Cork last time out.
However, there is little doubt that this year’s Group 2 Lanwades Stud Stakes favourite is the one right at the top of her game. Beaten just a length by the beautiful Tahiyra on Saturday of the Irish Champions Weekend in the Matron Stakes, she went from strength-to-strength last season and was subsequently bought for a whopping 1,650,000 GNS and makes her stable debut today.
The Heider’s affiliation with the Curragh can be found through their welcome sponsorship of the Round Tower Stakes and the Gallinule Stakes,

SPOKEN TRUTH won the same Cork maiden that Dermot Weld’s dual Derby winner Harzand landed in 2016. Those behind him at Cork haven’t boosted the form but the son of Frankel remains a colt of some promise and his trainer believes he will improve for better ground. Aidan O’Brien runs three and Ryan Moore has plumped for Mundi. The brother to Churchill won a Dundalk maiden over a mile on debut but doesn’t hold any notable entries in the coming months. Stablemate Chief Little Rock, twice runner-up in Group races last term, is highest-rated and ran well when third in a Listed contest at Epsom on his reappearance Norwalk Havoc’s pedigree suggests he may improve for this longer trip

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.
This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
