THE BUZZ
by Wetherbee
RACE ONE
HITCHING JACKING shaped well on his Rules debut here in March and he looks sure to improve for the step up in trip on his hurdles bow. Dan Skelton has a good record at this track and his gelding is narrowly preferred to Imperial B G, who was a convincing bumper winner at Carlisle in March Concetto and Present Fair are others who arrive from the point-to-point scene and have the potential to go well.
WIN: HITCHING JACKING
RACE TWO
DANGER: Imperial B G
This can go the way of MINELLA PLUS, who has been a comfortable winner of both of his starts over fences and a 2lb rise for his most recent success at Ludlow could prove to be lenient. Donald McCain’s charge racked up a three-timer this time last year and gets the vote ahead of Zacony Rebel, who won easily on his chase debut at Fontwell. Progressive over hurdles last season, Moriko De Vassy is likely to enter the reckoning as well.
WIN: MINELLA PLUS
RACE THREE
DANGER: Zacony Rebel
ONAGATHERINGSTORM returned to form when third at Cheltenham last month and is a major play er on the pick of his form The booking of Brian Hughes is another plus for the selection and he can see off the likes of Iroko, who has to be of interest on his handicap debut, and C&D winner Rafferty’s Return. A three-time winner last season, Foster’sisland can also have a say in proceedings.
WIN: ONAGATHERINGSTORM
RACE FOUR
DANGER: Iroko
XCITATIONS was an impressive winner when making all at Leicester in January and looks to have condi tions to suit here. Karl Philippe is an obvious contender having won twice over fences already and could prove to be the main threat to the selection. Zanza was plying his trade over both hurdles and fences last season and, if putting his best foot forward, he’s entitled to be in the shake-up
WIN: XCITATIONS
RACE FIVE
DANGER: Karl Philippe
MATATA shaped well on his debut over hurdles when making all at Fakenham last month and could be another top recruit for his connections. Throne Hall was smart performer on the level and made a decent start to life over obstacles when scoring at Uttoxeter in September Fruit N Nut was a good bumper performer and looked decent when last seen winning at Bangor over 13 months ago
WIN: MATATA
RACE SIX
DANGER: Throne Hall
Fransham was narrowly denied over course and distance last month and can go well in his bid to gain compensation this afternoon, despite having to give weight to all of his rivals. However, TOO FRIENDLY put in a promising display on his seasonal return at Chepstow last month and he remains unexposed over hurdles. Gaelik Coast and Risk D’Argent are others to consider in an open event.
WIN: TOO FRIENDLY
RACE SEVEN
DANGER: Fransham
This looks like another good opportunity for the unexposed and in-form BIG CHANGES. He has won his last two starts in a pleasing manner and seemed to relish every yard when scoring over this distance at Ayr 19 days ago Others to consider are Best Trition, who represents an in-form Olly Murphy yard and is expected to be suited by the switch to fences, while Sigurd has a good record here and is also worthy of consideration.
WIN: BIG CHANGES
DANGER: Sigurd

RACE DESCRIPTION Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles, three furlongs and 154 yards novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards.

It was another enthralling day of racing here at Wetherby on Saturday 29th october.
The opener sprung a suprise with Hall Lane narrowly defeated Hurricane Bay by a neck. The Alan King-trained four-yera-old was towards the rear in the early stages before being shaken up when four out. He faced a strong challenge from the runner-up but he found just enough to fend off the danger. Tommy Cullen finished third, a near three lengths off the winner and the popular choice Joe Dadancer wasn’t able to justify market support, finishing seventh.
Molly Ollys Wishes got her campaign off to a winning start, with a comfortable length-and-aquarter victory over Martello Sky. The mare was prominent befor Harry Skelton nudged her along to go second when three from the finish. She made a strong challenge just before two out and led after the last. The Dan Skelton-trained eight-year-old kept on well to extend the lead from the challenging Martello Sky. Nina The Terrier fell when three out on her second run of the season.
The following race saw an impressive 10-length success for Proschema who produced a fine performance. The market favourite Sporting John was not able to justify his support finishing fourth Proschema was held up towards the rear by Harry Skelton before going second when two out. The seven-year-old quickened and went clear in the run-in to complete and emphatic victory Thomas Darby was the closest in second with Threeunderthrufive finishing third.
It was the bet365 Charlie Hall chase up next and the eargerly awaited battle between Bravemansgame and Ahoy Senor. It was to be the formers day with
a comfortable three-and-a-half length victory over Eldorado Allen in second. The Paul Nicholls-trained seven-year-old travelled strongly throughout and produced a fine round of jumping. He took the lead and was going easily when two out before going clear when approaching the last. It was a disappointing run from Ahoy Senor who finished last of the pack. The gelding didn’t jump fluently and trainer Lucinda Russell admitted her ran too free in the early stages.
It was a much closer affair in the following race with favourite Ladronne holding off the danger from Deyrann De Carjac by a neck. The eight-year-old was pushed along and led before three out before finding himself two lengths down prior to the last. However, the gelding rallied and led inside the final stride to deny the Alan King-trained runner.
The penultimate race of the day saw Tango Boy take the honours for jockey Tom Scudamore and trainer Neil Mulholland. Scudamore positioned the gelding towards the rear before being shaken up to challenge when two from the finish. The nine-year-old ran on well to take the lead inside the closing stages, defeating Cash To Ash by a lengthand-a-quarter. Geryville finished third for trainer Micky Hammond.
Another fine day of racing was then completed with a three-quarters of a length victory for the Skelton pair with Rocky Man defeating the popular Findthetime. Rocky Man was prominent in the early stages and led going reasonably well when three from the finish A good jump at the last saw him deal with the danger well before staying on strongly for the victory.

The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

CURRER RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 0 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 140.

Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 7lb Leading course trainer (17-22): D Skelton (50 wins from 173 runners, 29%) runs TOO FRIENDLY Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D Skelton (9 wins from 55 runners, 16%) runs TOO FRIENDLY Longest Traveller: OAKLEY trained by R Bandey, Kingsclere, 212 miles.

WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
