Hello and a very warm welcome to Haydock Park on Bet365 Old Newton Cup Day. Today, we are delighted to host a thrilling afternoon of racing, including our feature races the bet365 Lancashire Oaks and the highlight of the day, the historic bet365 Old Newton Cup.
The Old Newton Cup traces its roots back to 1678 on Newton Common, with its modern form evolving from the Newton Gold Cup first held in 1807. Though the original race ceased in 1825, it was revived by Thomas Legh, transforming the meeting into a major event. Throughout the 19th century, the race maintained its prominence, boasting notable winners like the one-eyed horse Pity-the-Blind in 1849. However, by the century’s end, declining popularity and unruly crowds led to the course’s relocation to where we currently stand, at Haydock Park Racecourse in 1899, with the final Newton Common race run in 1898. The Old Newton Cup was re-established at Haydock, eventually adopting its current name in 1903.
The Lancashire Oaks has a tremendous roll of honour, with recent winners including the Sir Mark Prescott-trained 2021 winner, Alpinista, who went on to win the 2022 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, widely viewed as one of the most prestigious races in the world. This highlights the standard of horse we will get to see on track here today and I would like to wish all owners and trainers of horses running this afternoon the very best of luck for their races and for the remainder of the season.
We are delighted to have bet365 sponsor all our races today, extending the long-standing relationship between the racecourse and the company It is a privilege to welcome the team here today and I would love to wish them a memorable afternoon.
Looking ahead, we have a very exciting race schedule this summer with the Rose of Lancaster Stakes taking place on Saturday 9th August and the Group One Sprint Cup taking place on Saturday 6th September. Tickets and Hospitality are selling fast so if you haven’t already, I would encourage you to book soon to avoid disappointment. Full details of all our fixtures are available at www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/haydock
We hope you have a wonderful day with us, and we hope to see you again very soon

Welcome to Haydock Park on one of our feature days of the year, bet365 Old Newton Cup Day.
I’m sure you all enjoyed Royal Ascot Several horses who have run at Haydock Park won and it is wonderful to see horses who run here win on the biggest stage.
Today is a historic day of great significance for the racecourse. It really is remarkable that the roots of The Old Newton Cup relate back to 1807, with establishing on this site in 1903 from Newton It’s a fantastic race for Members to watch. 31 years since my first Old Newton Cup at the tender age of seven, it remains one of my personal highlights at Haydock Park. The winner will have their colours adorned on our 2025 badge.
All at Haydock Park were saddened to hear about the death of Barry Hills and Peter Easterby, since I wrote my last column They enjoyed so many memorable days here and racing is a poorer place for their passing
Winners of The bet365 Old Newton Cup rhyme off the tongue with aplomb: Rakaposhi King, Sir Henry Cecil’s only winner of the race in ‘86, Glide Path, the last dual winner in 1993/4, trained by the much-missed John Hills and Collier Hill in 2003 who established more air miles than Judith Chalmers to mention just three. Today promises to be another fascinating contest in the glorious July sunshine.
The bet365 Lancashire Oaks is a fantastic race for fillies and mares Alpinista won the race four years ago and was a subsequent winner of the Arc at Longchamp. Today we see an assortment of exciting fillies and mares lining up over twelve furlongs, for our apex female contest of the season.
We have so much to look forward to at Haydock Park in the latter throws of 2025, from the Rose of Lancaster Stakes to our pinnacle of flat racing , the Sprint Cup and rounding off with the Betfair Chase in November and our traditional festive fixtures.
An oasis in the shade is available to you all today in the shape of your viewing area, viewing boxes and designated bar.
I’dalsoliketowelcomeannualmembersfromYorkRacecourse today, and we hope you have an enjoyable afternoon
I hope you have a wonderful and successful afternoon today and will hopefully see you all when we race again in 13 days

We have agreed with our vets that the screen should be erected, whenever a horse requires veterinary treatment on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
