HORSE WELFARE

“Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider”. Like most sports racing carries risks, however, we work to make sure that no death or injury occurs, which could have been prevented. Here at Stratford Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have two specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action There is also a British Horseracing Authority Vet in attendance. During the race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION

In the event of an emergency all persons on the racecourse will be alerted by the following message over the public address system. This is an emergency announcement. Due to circumstances beyond our control, racing has been temporarily suspended Would all patrons please evacuate ALL buildings and make your way across the racetrack to the Red post marker in the Centre of the Course. Police and Racecourse Officials will assist and direct you. Please do not go to any Car Park until you are cleared to do so, because you may hamper the movement of emergency vehicles The message will then be repeated.

BROKEN GLASSES AND BOTTLES

Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others please do not carry drinks on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure.

FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY

We would ask all racegoers to refrain from using flash photography whilst on course.

Allan Atkinson (Al)

Al was agiant of aman. He wasn’t seven feet tall or anything but when the sad and untimely task of organising his funeral fell to myself and one of his closest friends Alan Turner, weweredeluged with condolences and genuine offers of help by ahuge number of people whose lives Al had influenced and enriched and when the funeral was done, we knewtherehad to be more to remember him.

He had been abookmaker earlier in his life and was amassiveracing fan and when Alan suggested sponsoring arace in his honour, Iinstinctively knewhewas right. It says something of the man that our problem when filling acoach to travel from Kidderminster for today was working out who not to invite in order to keep numbers manageable.

Al was aminor celebrity in Kidderminster. After bookmaking, he had runasnooker club (with Alan in his later years) and he was one of those people who truly was known by everyone in town. Notonly that but he was extremely popular too and awordthat cropped up time and again after we lost him was “gentleman”.

He was kind, generous, knowledgeable and sociable and he would haverelished watching aHurdle race, so this seems awonderfully fitting way to remember him. Ourgroup will cheer the winner home this afternoon and enjoyagreat day to celebrate the man after whom this race is named.

Ihope he’s found avantage point to watch it from too.

3-1 Hurst Hill (IRE), 9-2 Ocean Legacy (IRE), Moro Rock (IRE), 9-1 Inspector Lynley (GB), 12-1 Fox’s Socks (FR), 14-1 East Eagle (IRE), Flemen’s Tipple (IRE), 16-1 Presenting Yeats (IRE), 25-1 Bahtiyar (FR) RACE SUMMARY:

HURST HILL was right back to his best when getting off the mark at Newton Abbot earlier this month. That looks solid form for the grade and she appeals most stepping back up in trip. Ocean Legacy has a good record over hurdles for current connections and could be dangerous if getting her own way in front, while it could be interesting if any support comes for Inspector Lynley back off the same mark as when winning here last season.
