WELCOME
Welcome to The Advent Opener Raceday
Welcome to our fifth fixture of the season, The Advent Opener Raceday. With December upon us, it’s certainly starting to feel a bit like Christmas, and I hope you all enjoy the day. We’ve had a fantastic start to the season, welcoming thousands of racegoers and witnessing some excellent horses and thrilling finishes. We’re confident today will be just as exciting, and I’d like to thank you for your continued support.
Today we have 49 runners going to post over 7 races with over £78k of prizemoney on offer. Our feature on the track today is our fifth race worth £23,825, The Weatherbys & Birdie Calendars Handicap Hurdle. We have 8 horses go to post and this year’s renewal promises to be highly competitive, and we extend our best wishes to all the horses and connections not only in this race, but across the entire day’s card.
I would like to thank today’s sponsors, Extech, East Sussex Farmers Benevolent Fund, Chailey Classic & Vintage Tractor Club, Michael O’Shea & Family, Weatherbys, Kalm Kitchen and David Byrne and Friends, along with our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Kalm Kitchen for their tremendous support for the 2025/26 Season. We wish you all have a tremendous day.
Be sure to visit our Christmas market located next to the Final Fence Restaurant, where you’ll find a wonderful selection of gifts—perfect with only 24 days to go until Christmas.
Our next fixture, Christmas Jumper Raceday on Monday 15th December, will be our final meeting before Christmas, and we look forward to welcoming many of you back. It’s always a fantastic occasion, both on and off the track, with festive jumpers, live music, and competitive racing creating a brilliant atmosphere.
We then return in the New Year with our first raceday of 2026, the Sussex National on Sunday 4th January. Last season’s renewal was won by Invincible Nao, and this year’s meeting will feature over £160,000 in prize money, alongside a full programme of family activities—including an ice-skating rink. As this is one of our most popular fixtures, we encourage you to book your hospitality and admission tickets early to avoid missing out.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.
Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.
Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.
Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race.
Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.
Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.
Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race.

Andy Irvine’s last two handicap runners have been winners and BIRDMAN BOB, who won nicely over C&D at the start of last month, has an excellent chance of continuing in that vein of form, despite a 7lb rise. King Of Highways ran with credit on his chase debut when third at Lingfield and is likely to be competitive off the same mark. The switch of headgear to a visor might yield some improvement from Atreides.
totewin: Birdman Bob
toteeachway: King Of Highways
FRESH KICKS appears to set the standard based on his first run over hurdles when runner-up at Kempton and Nicky Henderson’s gelding looks to have an ideal opportunity to go one better. Hillwalk finished second to a useful prospect at Chepstow in November of last year and that kind of form would give him every chance now running over hurdles for the first time.
Crest Of Valour is entitled to step forward from his Fontwell debut.
totewin: Fresh Kicks
toteeachway: Hillwalk
Cueros made the perfect start to his hurdling career at Newcastle and lost little in defeat at Wetherby next time. He should progress further, but might struggle to give 7lb to CREST OF STARS. The four-year-old landed a Newton Abbot bumper on his return in October but is sure to be better over an obstacle, especially given that he is a half-brother to the smart Ashdale Bob. General Briar is another to consider.
totewin: Crest Of Stars
toteeachway: Cueros
JOREBEL has gone from strength to strength since scoring at Fontwell in September, winning three of his four starts, including on his fencing bow at Lingfield. Although he only prevailed narrowly, he should have plenty more in the locker and is fancied to go in again, despite a 6lb rise. Touquet was defeated by the selection at Lingfield, but is 1lb better off. Jackpot Cash has struggled of late, but perhaps the application of a first-time tongue-tie will help him.
totewin: Jorebel

toteeachway: Touquet
Having notched up a brace of novice victories, Jackstell completed his hat-trick when switched to handicaps over C&D. He is expected to go close again, but GRENADIER JED is preferred. Robert Walford’s gelding also registered a three-timer on his return at Fontwell and the manner in which he won would suggest he can cope with a 10lb rise. Believitanducan, Bourbali and Sixty Plus add further intrigue to a competitive heat.
totewin: Grenadier Jed
toteeachway: Jackstell
Low Expectations has really turned a corner since returning last month, winning at Fontwell before going in again at Windsor. The penalty shouldn’t be any barrier to further success, but the presence of NO MORE BOLERO might be. Officially rated 69 on the level, he made a mockery of a mark of 84 at Ludlow last week and might still have too much under his penalty. Hill Station can chase the pair home.
totewin: No More Bolero
toteeachway: Low Expectations
A confident vote goes to MESCALERO, who made a pleasing start to his career when second at Worcester in September. Harry Eustace’s charge then finished third over the same C&D, but the winner looked useful and the runner-up has since gone one better over hurdles. This might not be the deepest contest and any further progress could suffice. Saint Invictus was a distant second at Sandown but is still one of the likelier candidates, while Jet Steel must also enter the reckoning.

GENERAL BRIAR: Following its run on 3/11/2025 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed in the straight.
Probable S.P’s: 2-1 Cueros (IRE), 9-4 General Briar (IRE), 5-2 Crest of Stars (IRE), 20-1 Celtic Queen (GB), 50-1 Major Major (IRE), Suzy Wood (GB), 100-1 Lord of The Glance (GB), 150-1 My Lovely Horse (FR)
An unsettled forecast may tip this in favour of hurdle debutant CREST OF STARS whose recent bumper success has been franked by the third winning at Cheltenham. He’s narrowly preferred to Cueros, who merits plenty of respect back in a novice (under a penalty) but wouldn’t be ideally suited by softening ground. General Briar completes the shortlist given he was running well when falling behind A Pai De Nom on hurdle debut and could go well dropped in trip.

USE OF SCREENS
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

The training partnership of Gary and Josh Moore reach for first-time cheekpieces on Royal Way, who looked in desperate need of the run on return at Sandown last time and should strip fitter for the outing here. The five-year-old is winless since March of 2024 but has now dropped down to a tempting mark of 114, 7lbs below that last winning mark when scoring at Ascot. Racegoers are required to conform to the instructions given by gate and/or security staff especially when crossing the racecourse. Course crossings will occasionally be closed as a matter of safety.
Dogs
Dogs are only allowed in the picnic enclosure and must be on a lead at all times. Please do not leave dogs unattended in your car.
Horse and Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sports equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of licensed trainers. The standards demanded by the BHA far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The BHA similarly licenses racecourses setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course.
At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses with two vets following the horses as they race and the third being based in the stable yard.

Parade Ring Access
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, BHA and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the parade ring are asked to refrain from entering the parade ring unless absolutely necessary.
