Ayr Racecard - Monday 1st December

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for the first of our December racedays.

Whether you are a first-time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today

I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here today and I wish all connections the very best of luck and hope you have a successful day

We have a good mixture of hurdle and chases today and the feature race is the Ayr Racecourse Racing Club

Only £50 Handicap Chase. After a successful first year of the Club where both horses were winners, we have listened to you and we go again in 2026 this time with Tap Dancer trained by Jim Goldie. As many of you will know Ayrshire Cancer Support is our nominated charity partner and all proceeds of the £50 subscription will be donated to help provide their invaluable services.

In addition, for the second year, we will also be holding our Cheltenham Gold Cup lunch on 13th March 2026 at Western House. With an Owners and Trainers style lunch, it’s an ideal opportunity to watch the biggest day at Cheltenham with like-minded enthusiasts, and our very own Jim Delahunt on the mike taking us through the day’s proceedings. There will be free to enter Beat the Pundit and Tipster competitions for some great prizes. Tickets are only £45 they will make a great Xmas present.

Looking ahead to 2nd January 2026 we again have the fabulous McDonald Brothers to entertain between seven thrilling races. The winners of our feature race that day will be presented with the Ayr Stayers Handicap Hurdle Trophy

There is live entertainment at Western House after racing, so please feel free to pop down and continue the fun.

The next meeting is 9th December and we look forward to welcoming you back then.

I wish you and a safe journey home and hope to see you back at Ayr soon.

Don’t forget our next meeting... TUESDAY 9TH DECEMBER

CORAL CHRISTMAS RACEDAY

8 Form guide

9 Age

10 Weight

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

JIRKO made a bright beginning to his chasing career when third at Kelso, showing up for a long way before the lack of a recent run probably told. With the experience behind him, he can take the necessary step forward. Wholly Boley’s jumping let him down last time, but is a player if judged instead on his previous second at Hexham. Better is anticipated from Wainwright now he goes over the larger obstacles, and the same can be said for Didntgotwenty totewin: Jirko

The now 40-year-old Hughes has been champion jockey in Britain 3 times and has recently becomenumberonejockeytoleadingScottishownerJimmyFyffewhohashorseswithanumber of trainers in Britain and Ireland, including Hughes’ old ally Donald McCain. Owner, trainer and jockeyteamedupforawinneratMusselburghonFridaywithhandicapdebutantCityOfDiamonds and the size of Hughes’ new job was confirmed last week with figures showing Fyffe to have been third in the British Owners’ table for the number of runners in the 2024/25 season behind JP McManus. The jockey will be riding against the current champion Sean Bowen at Ayr today but he’s rapidly approaching another half-century of winners for the new season and has rides here for Micky Hammond, Adam Nicol, Nick Alexander and Iain Jardine.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - GORDON ELLIOTT

Former jump-jockey Elliott continues to head up one of the biggest training operations in Ireland and the trainer teams up with champion jockey Sean Bowen for his latest raid on Ayr. The Cullentra House handler has declared 5 runners for today’s 7-race card and the trainer had a successful weekend at Newbury as well as keeping up his excellent strike-rate at home in Ireland, where he started the weekend at the top of the Irish Trainers’ Championship ahead of Willie Mullins and Henry de Bromhead. The trainer made his name with successful Scottish trips to Perth in the early days of his career but 8 winners from just 34 runners here at Ayr over the past 5 years should signal to punters that all of his horses have to be taken seriously this afternoon, especially after his recent Ayr runner-up Themanintheboots won next time out back home at Navan.

UPON TWEED beat the promising Conman John in a Newcastle bumper and again won as he liked over C&D on his reappearance. He looks a smart prospect but will need to be to successfully concede weight to Stede Bonnet, who won a couple of NH Flat races before a satisfactory hurdling debut at the Galway Festival. Takenasred took a big step forward when runner-up at Down Royal, while Like Minded is an interesting newcomer. One Mill Harbour might be using this to blow away any cobwebs before a return to fences.

This could be another fine opportunity for TAKE A HIKE, who returned to form in no uncertain terms at Kelso last month. The seven-year-old is now 5lb higher, but a few of these arrive with a bit to prove and she might not need much more. Zeezee continues to knock at the door and is sure to play a leading role, while dual C&D winner Shoeshine Boy showed a bit more at Hexham latest. totewin: Take A Hike toteeachway: Zeezee

HEADS OR HARPS let favourite-backers down at Kelso, but that was his seasonal return and it might be worth giving him another chance. The eight-year-old still has few miles on the clock, although the same can be said of Southey, who was a winner between the flags in May and is worth considering back under Rules. Rock On Jet and Arthur’s Quay shouldn’t be far away either. totewin: Heads Or Harps toteeachway:

LADDIE COOPER MIA made a pleasing reappearance at Sedgefield and that should have blown away any cobwebs. Adam Nicol’s mare remains unexposed over hurdles and could be more than capable from her current mark. The application of first-time cheekpieces may give a boost to Forest Blaze, who was disappointing at Hexham. C&D winner So Many Roads might also improve upon his seasonal return, while the veteran Fostered Phil is just one more to consider.

RED CADILLAC appears to have strengthened up during his break, judging by the way he stuck his neck out to get off the mark at Carlisle. He only won by a head so a 4lb rise isn’t ideal, but he should be capable of even more, especially now going back up in trip. King Gris has to be feared on his first appearance for the Gordon Elliott team, and with Sean Bowen on top. Ozzy Cosmo is the pick of the remainder.

DUBHAIN gave a great sight from the front at Down Royal’s big meeting of the year, only giving way late to finish third. The winner has gone in again to frank the form and Stuart Crawford’s raider has an experience edge over Broadway Ted, who also crosses the Irish Sea and makes plenty of appeal on pedigree. Nicky Richards forked out €44,000 for Coniston Commander and he is another newcomer to consider.
