HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET

STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win

5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING

Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.

Tel: 01480 499180

In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

15. A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY

DAYLATEDOLLARSHORT filled the runner-up spot on his Rules bow at Plumpton and the four-year-old boasts strong credentials with that experience under his belt. Atlantic Lad has been consistent so far over timber, with his best effort coming here last December, and he wouldn’t need to step forward much from his third behind a couple of smart prospects at Carlisle. Hardly Surprising and Windsor Blue can fight it out for the minor honours.

WIN: DAYLATEDOLLARSHORT

ATLANTIC LAD

IDAHO SUN displayed a smart level of form last season, winning twice before finishing sixth in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, and this appears to be an excellent opportunity for Harry Fry’s gelding to back up his hurdling debut success at Fontwell. They Want Me had a wind operation soon after his run in a Carlisle bumper in February, when behind Peckforton Hills (winner) and Noble George (second). It wouldn’t be a surprise if he was able to reverse that form now sent hurdling.

WIN: IDAHO SUN DANGER: THEY WANT ME

REGAL RENAISSANCE was last in winning action at Warwick off 2lb lower last November and returned to action at the same venue when second to a rival who was able to dominate proceedings earlier in the month. With that run under her belt, the seven-year-old is more than capable of going one better. Malaita has been knocking on the door and enters calculations along with recent Kempton runner-up Ilovethenightlife.

WIN: REGAL RENAISSANCE DANGER: MALAITA

Laganhill will likely be sharper for his recent chasing debut at Carlisle and this longer trip promises to bring improvement, while Grand Albert returns to the fray 7lb higher than when scoring at Wetherby last Christmas but he could still feature. NEWTON TORNADO was in the process of running a big race when falling four fences from home at Cheltenham on last month’s reappearance. This looks less competitive and he could go close with a clear round.

WIN: NEWTON TORNADO

DANGER: LAGANHILL

JOUR D’EVASION has won off a similar mark over hurdles and finished a decent fifth at Aintree on his first start over the larger obstacles. Henry Daly’s charge gets the vote in this lower grade, with the extra test of stamina also in his favour A recent runner-up at Uttoxeter, Passing Kate could land a blow off only 2lb higher, while A Moments Madness has to be of interest on his debut for Fergal O’Brien’s yard. WIN: JOUR

BRIDGET MARY returned to action with a fine second over fences here last month. She won a chase at the track back in April and Rebecca Curtis’ inmate has a leading chance racing off the same mark now back over the smaller obstacles. Stamina Chope found only one too good at Plumpton and cannot be ruled out, while Fontwell runner-up Happy Returns could also make her presence felt.

WIN: BRIDGET MARY

A competitive handicap but there was plenty to like about the chasing debut of KAHAVARI here until he unseated three out and he is taken to bounce back in style A Moments Madness rates a big threat starting out for Fergal O’Brien here, while Passing Kate and Jour D’evasion can both have a say too. 1-2-3:
