We are incredibly proud to sponsor the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes for the 49th year, and with every passing year our pride in this enduring sponsorship magnifies.
The world of betting has changed immeasurably over the last few decades, from primarily cash betting in shops through the seventies and eighties, to the growth in telephone betting in the nineties, and then the arrival of the internet and digital betting on mobile phones which has flourished since the turn of the millennium Throughout all of these changes, Coral’s association with this historic horse-race has stood the test of time as a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to horse racing, and the very best that this sport has to offer
Our enduring partnership with Sandown Park and The Jockey Club has ensured that the Coral-Eclipse remains one of the pre-eminent Flat races in the world, with a distinguished roll of honour Whilst the race can sometimes come up short in numbers it is always deep in quality. This year is no exception, as the field is headed by City Of Troy, who will be bidding to join an exclusive club of Derby winners who go on to triumph in the Coral-Eclipse.
Aside from race sponsorship, in 2022 Coral launched the first free-to-join racehorse ownership club – The Coral Racing Club – that gives Coral customers the chance to experience what it’s like to own racehorses. It’s never too late to join the club, we now have 12 racehorses in training, a mare and a foal at stud, and over 180,000 members, some of whom we welcome to Sandown Park today in a special Coral Racing Club Lounge with full hospitality and great views of the racing
I’d like to thank all connections for supporting today’s racing, and thank all racegoers for coming, I hope and am sure you will have a great day, and don’t forget, no need to rush off after the racing, instead stay and watch the football, although I can’t promise an England win!

Aquick wayto see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.
Look out for Letters:
C = Has won at this course
D = Has won over this distance
CD = Has won over this distance at this course
BF = Was a beaten favourite
INFORMATION ON THE FORM
- = New racing season
/ = Missed racing season
P = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race
F = Horse fell
U = Rider unseated
R = Horse refused to race
CO = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse
B = Horse was brought down
S = Horse slipped
r = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race
d = Disqualified
Bold form
figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races
How the experts rate the horse’s chances:
2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse.
3. Timeform view and TFR rating
Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.
Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day.
6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey
7. Saddlecloth number
8. Horse’s name
9. Days since the horse last run
10. Horse’s age
11. Jockey’s weight (stone and lbs)
12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam)
13. Horse’s owner
14. Horse’s breeder
15. Birthplace of horse
16. Draw – position of the horse in the starting stalls
17. Sponsor (if applicable)
Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.
Whichever horse wins the 2024 running of the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, will be a direct descendent to ECLIPSE, foaled in 1764.
Perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time, and after whom the race is named, he raced a total of 18 times resulting in a victory on each occasion.
He was already a 5-y-o when he contested his first race at Epsom Downs in 1769 and with no horse able to compete with him, he was retired to stud after just three seasons. The lineage chart, shown here, depicts the impact ECLIPSE has had on the thoroughbred breeding lines and, it is estimated, 95% of thoroughbreds can be traced back to this great horse. From this year’s Grand National winner, I AM MAXIMUS, to the current highest rated horse in the Longines World Rankings, LAUREL RIVER, and the winners of each of the four Classics run in Great Britain and France and the three run in Ireland to date in 2024, his DNA is present.

SPANISH BLAZE showed the benefit of his reappearance run when adding a second C&D handicap to his tally 3 weeks ago, well positioned as the race unfolded but keeping on well nevertheless to prevail. He looks a sound player again from a 4lb higher mark and shades the vote ahead of Pitney, who ran a cracker without being seen to best effect at Chester latest. Storm Star and Swindon are others worth a look.

LIVE IN THE DREAM skipped Royal Ascot for a crack at this and last year’s Nunthorpe winner sets a clear standard. Twilight Calls will be suited by the likely strong pace so is next best ahead of the fast-improving Desperate Hero, who looks worth a shot at this level after his wide-margin win in a handicap at Hamilton.

INDELIBLE emerged with her reputation enhanced despite meeting with defeat to Soprano in the Sandringham, ‘winning’ the race on her side, and she could be up to reversing that form with George Boughey’s filly with the prospect of more improvement to come. Clove Hitch and Regal Jubilee complete the shortlist.
When City Of Troy lines up in this afternoon’s Coral-Eclipse he will be bidding to become the 11th horse to land the prestigious contest having previously won Britain’s most famous race – the Derby – earlier in the same season.
The rare double was first completed at the end of the 19th century by FLYING FOX (1899). Flying Fox was also a winner of the Triple Crown (2,000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger), as was DIAMOND JUBILEE (1900), who completed the Derby-Eclipse double for his owner-breeder The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.
LEMBERG (1910) became the third winner of both races, although he had to share the honours at Sandown Park when dead-heating with the 2000 Guineas scorer Neil Gow, who had failed to settle when fourth in The Derby.
CORONACH (1926) was a facile victor of both contests, winning at a canter at both tracks.
BLUE PETER went through 1939 unbeaten in four starts.Afterwins in the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom Downs, 2000 Guineas and Derby, Lord Rosebery’s colt triumphed in the Eclipse. Sadly, the onset of World War II and curtailment of much of the racing programme meant he never raced again.
The sixth horse to win both contests was the Aga Khan’s TULYAR (1952) He had to work to justify favouritism in The Derby, winning by half-a-length, but found it much easier in the Eclipse when he scored cosily by three lengths from his stable companion Mehmander
It was 19 years before the double was completed again by MILL REEF (1971) Paul Mellon’s outstanding colt followed up his Derby and Eclipse double with victories in Ascot’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He remains the only horse in history to win the quartet of Group One contests in the same season.
The last horse to complete the double in the 20th century was NASHWAN (1989). An easywinner ofThe Derby, in the Coral-Eclipse he showed an amazing turn of foot to take the lead entering the final furlong before going on to win by five lengths.
Two decades after Nashwan, SEA THE STARS (2009) completed the double. Like Nashwan, Sea The Stars won the 2000 Guineas and Derby before his Coral-Eclipse success. The Cape Cross colt carried all before him in 2009 and following his Coral-Eclipse triumph he went on to win the Juddmonte International at York, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The most recent Derby-Eclipse hero is GOLDEN HORN (2015). Anthony Oppenheimer’s homebred colt won both contests by the same distance – three and a half lengths – in the hands of Frankie Dettori.
In addition to the 10 colts mentioned above, a further seven Derby winners went on to win the Eclipse as four-year-olds the following season - AYRSHIRE (1889), ISINGLASS (1894), PERSIMMON (1897), ARD PATRICK (1903), WINDSOR LAD (1935), ST PADDY (1961) and ROYAL PALACE (1968).
Ahead of this year’s Coral-Eclipse, Ben Cox takes a look at the profiles of the three Fillies to have won the race before
ThisyearseesthefeatureCoral-Eclipserunforthe127thtime,withtwofilliesinthe lineup, the Andrew Balding trained See The Fire and Hughie Morrison’s Stay Alert. Perhapssurprisingly,theprevious126editionsofthe10-furlongcontesthavebeen won by fillies or mares on only three occasions.
If successful this afternoon, the winner would join a very select band of successful females in the Group One highlight…..
PEBBLES (1985)
Although a Classic winner as a three-year-old in 1984 when she landed the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Clive Brittain-trained Pebbles took her form to even greater heights in 1985 She began her four-year-old season at Sandown Park in April when landing the Trusthouse Forte Mile and arrived at the Coral-Eclipse as a 7-2 chance. Partnered by Steve Cauthen, Pebbles created history by coming home two lengths clear of Rainbow Quest and becoming the first filly to win the Coral-Eclipse She was then rested until the autumn when she returned with a stunning victory in the Champion Stakes and then ended her career with victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Aqueduct, USA – again making history by becoming the first British-trained horse to triumph at the Breeders’ Cup.
Trained in Ireland by Michael Kauntze, a former assistant to Vincent O’Brien, Kooyonga was a dual Group One winner as a three-year-old in 1991 with victories in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. As a four-yearold, she had been disqualified when first past the post in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Starting the 7-2 favourite in the Coral-Eclipse, there were no problems at Sandown Park as she came home a length and a half to the good over Opera House in the hands of Warren O’Connor.
The greatest British-trained mare seen so far this century, Enable won 11 Group One races during her career Homebred by Prince Khalid Abdullah and trained by John Gosden, Enable already had two Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes, an Oaks, a King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and a Breeders’ Cup Turf under her belt when she made her five-year-old debut in the 2019 Coral-Eclipse. Partnered as usual by Frankie Dettori, the 4-6 favourite saw off another female in Magical for an ultimately comfortable three-quarter length success.
This year sees the 127th running of today’s feature race, the Coral-Eclipse. It’s Group 1 status, the long-standing support from its sponsor, its integration into QIPCO British Champions Series and position in the racing calendar have seen it draw some of the biggest names from across the racing world and this year we celebrate a few of those anniversaries
Oneofracing’sstandoutstarsofrecentyears,Enable(picturedabove),cemented her place in Sandown Park’s history books when she took the 2019 renewal Dubbed ‘Queen of the Turf,’ she came to the Coral-Eclipse for her 2019 seasonal reappearance, 245 days after her ¾ length victory over Magical in the Breeders Cup Turf at Churchill Down; a result that was to be replicated here. The mighty trio that was Enable, John Gosden and Frankie Dettori became synonymous with British racing throughout her career, which included 11 Group 1 wins. Retired at the end of the 2020 season, Enable has settled into her second career as a broodmare and has already had two foals – keep an eye out for Encompass, her first foal who is now in training with John & Thady Gosden.
Years -Mukhadram (2014)
Having knocked on the door of Group 1 glory on a handful of occasions, son of Shamardal Mukhadram (pictured bottom left) finally came out on top by two lengths in the 2014 Coral-Eclipse. Trained by William Haggas and ridden in Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell colours by Paul Hanagan, Mukhadram could only finish third in the race in 2013 when hampered in the final 100 yards. No such bad luck a year later thought, where tracking 100/1 pacemaker Somewhat, Hanagan set sail up the famous Sandown Park hill at the two-furlong pole and was never in danger of being caught Mukhadram’s Coral-Eclipse win would be the most significant win on the horses’ CV before he was then retired at the end of the 2014 season.
Refuse To Bend’s win in 2004 came 20 years after his sire, Sadler’s Wells’, victory in the Coral-Eclipse Having won the 2000 Guineas the previous year for Dermot Weld, Refuse To Bend (pictured below) had a lengthy dry spell before starting his comeback with a win for Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, a month before coming to Sandown Park Giving Frankie Dettori his second win in the race, Refuse To Bend sat nicely heading into the final straight before taking the lead with a furlong to go Gamely chased by Warrsan, it’s fair to say Refuse To Bend lived up to his name to come out on top by a head Ending his career as a Group 1 winner at 2, 3 and 4 years old, Refuse To Bend was retired to stud duties at the end of the 2004 season
A horse who needs no introduction, Sadler’s Wells was crowned Europe’s Champion Miler in 1984 in a season where he not only won the Coral-Eclipse but also the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Irish Champion Stakes Trained by Vincent O’Brien in the famous Sangster blue and green silks, Sadler’s Wells came to Sandown Park off the back off his win at the Curragh. Ridden by Pat Eddery in the race, the pair hit the front at the furlong pole and could not be reeled in by the older rivals Tolomeo and Morcon. An excellent racehorse, but an even better stallion, Sadler’s Wells went on to become one of the most influential stallions of alltime CrownedleadingsireinBritainandIrelandarecord14times,hisinfluence continues to be seen across racing – with 2023 leading sire Frankel a grandson being just one example. In the Coral-Eclipse, Sadler’s Wells has sired two winners in Opera House and Refuse to Bend and is directly related to another 5 winners, including Enable In today’s renewal, both Hans Andersen and Dancing Gemini are direct descendants of the great sire – could they give him another CoralEclipse winner?
RACE DESCRIPTION: This one mile and two furlongs race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 1 contest; the highest level of racing. Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland and occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the large levels of prize money available. Victory in a Group 1 race is the pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud. Named after a legendary 18th-century racehorse called Eclipse, it has been run since 1886 and sponsored by Coral since 1976.

2023: PADDINGTON 3 8 13 Ryan Moore 8-11 (Aidan O’Brien) 4 ran Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No 1. Tongue Strap worn by No 3. Stewards Note: DANCING GEMINI: Following its run on 1/6/2024 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running.

An Eclipse which revolves around CITY OF TROY, who will surely have too much for these rivals if in anything like the same form as when leaving Ambiente Friendly and Los Angeles (third and first in last weekend’s Irish Derby) trailing in his wake at Epsom Bar a forgivable blip at Chester, recent Royal Ascot winnerJayarebe has a progressive profile and might be the one to chase Aidan O’Brien’s colt home.

Probable S.P’s: 9-2 Ashariba (FR), 13-2 Midnight Rumble (GB), 15-2 Sun God (GB), 10-1 Break The Bank (GB), Blake (GB), 12-1 Dramatic Effect (GB), Highland Spring (GB), Devoirs Choice (IRE), The Hun (IRE), 16-1 Von Baer (IRE), 28-1 Prepschool (IRE), 40-1 Golden Arc (GB)
A host in with chances but the verdict goes to ASHARIBA, who doubled her tally at Leicester just under 6 weeks ago (front pair pulled 22 lengths clear), and with further progress on the cards, a 4lb rise certainly doesn£ t look insurmountable. She can get the better of Midnight Rumble, who is improving with experience and opened his account at Lingfield recently, with Sun God taken to edge out Highland Spring for minor honours.

PLAY SMARTER
DAMBUSTER is easily the least exposed in this field and there should be a good deal more to come, so he makes most appeal. Chasing Aphrodite is a player if he can get across to lead from stall 15 but, if the race is strongly run, Stay Well is likely to come into it along with a few others.

Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather

The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
