Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the second day of the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale Meeting and the closing day of our 2022/2023 Jumps season.
Today’s racing is out of the top drawer, featuring some hugely competitive racing on a card showcasing potential stars of the future.
My thanks go to today’s sponsors, the British European Breeders Fund, the family of John Haine, Goffs UK, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Mr John H W Finch and to BetVictor, who are title sponsors of the two-day fixture. We are delighted to bring back our own awards, The Newburys, in association with Conundrum HR Consulting, that celebrate some of the leading stars of the season. Throughout the afternoon, we will be recognising the winning-most owner, trainer, jockey and conditional jockey as well as awarding the yard who has won the Best Turned Out the greatest number of times this season and the Moment Of The Season as voted by you.
For those interested in getting even closer to the action, make sure you join course expert David Crosse for the popular Trips to the Jump which will take place ahead of the 2.05 and 5.00 races today. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before their preferred trip.
It is not long now until the Peter O’Sullevan Lambourn Open Day which takes place on Good Friday, 7 April. If you are interested in a chance to go behind the scenes at one of the UK’s major racehorse training centres, then I would highly recommend a visit. Tickets are available on our website for £15 or in Lambourn on the day
Following this weekend our attention will turn to the start of the Flat Season on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April when Classic hopefuls will be in action at the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This fixture will also see the return of the popular Beer Festival featuring over 30 real ales and ciders from local brewers. There’s a whole host of entertainment in store across the weekend, including live music, behind the scenes trips and tours and the chance to win exclusive gifts and prizes courtesy of Dubai Duty Free. Early Bird tickets for the weekend are now sold out but tickets are still available at the discounted Advance Saver rate and can be purchased online or on-site at East Gate today
What’s more, the newly refurbished Hennessy Restaurant re-opens across the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend with bookings being taken now. If you’d like to take a look at what’s in store for The Hennessy Restaurant’s refurbishment, simply head to the ground floor of the Hampshire Stand or Berkshire Stand where our display boards give a flavour of what you can expect. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing patience while this exciting refurbishment is completed.
Once again, I would like to thank all our racegoers for joining us today and that you have enjoyed the 2022/2023 Jumps season. We hope to see you again for the start of the Flat Season on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April.

The condtional jockey is still all very much to play for with Toby Wynne and Ben Ffrench Davis leading the way. With races still to be won, the champion could come from any number of Conditionals.
The thrilling finish to the Coral Long Distance Hurdle was chosen as the moment of the season as Champ held on to deny Paisley Park by a head.
The two ten-year-olds produced fine peformances and it was the the Nicky Henderson-trained Champ that found enough to take the honours.
The Best Turned Out Award recognises the yard that has won the most Best Turned Out prizes across the season. Currently Jonjo O’Neill leads but Warren Greatrex, Philip Hobbs, Nicky Henderson and Chris Gordon are one behind!

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Race Summary: Most of these arrive in good form but the lightly-raced HELTENHAM is potentially the big improver in the field given the manner of his wins at Newcastle and Ffos Las, so he could still be ahead of his mark. Fellow 6-y-o Super Six is getting his act together over fences now and rates the main threat after his dominant win at Haydock, while The Big Bite responded well to this headgear when winning the Greatwood with a bit in hand over C&D so must be respected, too.

Race Summary: A typically competitive renewal. AUBIS WALK came clear in good style at Sedgefield last time and might be the way to go There should also be more to come from fellow Northern raider Ruby Island now moving into handicap company so she’s second on the list. Moviddy, whose yard knows what it takes to win this race, Great Snow and Royale Dance are a few of many others who could go well.

John Haine, Winter Fair, Chepstow Photo by Bernard Parkin
John Haine and style were synonymous, on horseback, his manner of dress, his choice of car or his preferred eateries, were all about style. When Brough Scott said, “Maybe John was never destined for old age and slippers”, he summed up the man to perfection.
John’s life revolved around horses from a very early age as a star performer in the show ring, and a competitive follower with the Beaufort Hounds. Apprenticed to Bob Turnell at the earliest opportunity, he rode his first winner on Misconception at Bath in 1958, but after about 30 further successes on the flat, his riding weight dictated a move to the National Hunt. Highlights of his jumping career include wins on Buona Notte in the Gloucestershire Hurdle, and the tote Champion Novices’ Chase (1964), both at Cheltenham. Two more Gloucestershire Hurdle wins followed on Chorus (1967) and Barnard (1971). Other major victories include the Scottish National on Popham Down (1964), the Imperial Cup on Sir Thopas (1967), the Topham Trophy on Charter Flight (1970) and the Welsh National on Charlie H (1972). However, it was winning the 1966 Champion Hurdle on Salmon Spray that gave John his most thrilling victory – horse and jockey matching dash and brilliance, performing a class act to the delight of the Cheltenham Festival crowd.
Ten years as a trainer brought further successes, most notably with Roger Bacon and Jenny Splendid, who enjoyed her retirement in John’s paddocks at Crudwell. Involvement in racehorse breeding and transport maintained John’s participation in the racing world he loved.
Remembering his mischievous smile, and his penchant for a punt, many friends will be raising their glasses to him today as a man who not only loved racing, but most of all loved the horse.
His wife, Sue, summed it up beautifully when she said that her life with John has been “sometimes good, sometimes bad, but never boring!”

Race Summary: The return of this valuable bumper has attracted a huge field and the market will be revealing given the amount of newcomers. SUMMER BRISE is just about the most appealing of the lot as a six-figure 3-y-o purchase and a half-sister to a winner in this sphere.
Gentleman’s Relish is another very likely sort on paper, while Norman Fletcher has a penalty to carry but he brings a fair level of form to the table.
