kept in the locker to move away up the straight for an impressive success. With a 3rd place finish later on the card Charlotte has jumped up to joint second place, just a point behind Champion Jockey Sean Bowen.

It is very tight at the top of the Jockeys’ Challenge with 8 riders within 6 points at the summit.

We had popular scenes around the winners enclosure on Saturday when the Queen Of Cartmel Charlotte Jones won the first 2 races, although maybe not so popular with the Bookmakers! Charlotte’s first win was on Caughtintheact who defied a penalty to land the Hadwins Novices Hurdle This was quickly followed up when successful on Dusky Days in the Cartmel Handicap Hurdle This was a great front running ride where a number of horses came to challenge, but enough was

JOCKEY

Another big mover was Richie McLernon His strength was highlighted on Imperial Data in the PSR Marquees Crystal Cup getting up in last strides to land one of the big races in our calendar. This was also a poignant win with the horse being formally owned by Cartmel legend John Wade Richie has a strong book of rides today and will be looking to improve on his joint second place.

It was red letter day for Thomasina Eyston who was successful in the Burlington Female Jockeys Handicap on Winds Of Winter This was her first win at the track and as well as landing the most valuable Female Rider only race in the Jumps season, Thomasina gets the prize of a Diamond Necklace, courtesy of Cartmel racecourse

TRAINER PTS

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

Cartmel’s own Jimmy Moffatt has won the Trainer Challenge 6 times and is out on his own at the top of the leaderboard after Saturday’s racing This was a special day for the stable with Jimmy’s dad Dudley here to join in the celebrations on his 90th Birthday It was a nice present for him when Jimmy won the first 2 races on the Charlotte Jones-ridden Caughtintheact in the Hadwin Novices Hurdle and Dusky Days in the Cartmel Handicap Hurdle With two further placed horses the tally of 8 points has seen Jimmy move into a clear lead The gap is 3 points from the powerful Mickey Bowen yard, who had a winner a second from just 2 runners. Like last year, the title race could go down to the wire

Cumbrian Trainer Tristan Davidson won the concluding Shorefields Handicap Chase with Rory’s Story. This was a well backed winner under a confident ride from Harry Reed, keeping the winner covered up until the turn to quickly assert. Tristan doesn’t send many runners here nowadays and they are worth noting when he does.

Tim Vaughan is another who has had plenty of winners here in the past but not too many runners have travelled from South Wales recently. Bumpy Evans made sure that the long journey was worthwhile when winning the MB Digital Handicap by an incredible 28 lengths This was the easiest winner of the season so far for a horse who will surely win again

Mickey Bowen

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

PLAY SMARTER

LIGHTENING COMPANY is probably the most solid option in a race where plenty arrive with something to prove. Game Management has found life hard on the Flat this summer but made a positive start to his hurdle career at the end of 2024 and rates a potential improver in his first handicap hurdle. Drumlee Myth is another going handicap hurdling for the first time and has scope from his mark judged on bumper ability He’s one to monitor closely in the betting

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

PLAY SMARTER

THE NAVIGATOR is in much better heart than his recent form figures might suggest and is now 4lb below his last winning mark. He should be suited by the step back up in trip and can notch another course win at the expense of Top Flight Century, who shaped as though still in form when runner-up over 2m at Perth and now steps back up in distance under a good conditional. Burgundy Man arrives on the back of his best performance for current connections and is also respected.

Owners Prize Money. 1st £2605, 2nd £1302, 3rd £651, 4th £326, 5th £163. (Penalty Value £3406.24)

Race Description This is the second division of Race 2. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty in with a chance but RIOJA ALTA has some solid form in the book since winning at Sedgefield in February, including a creditable third over C&D in a 0-120 handicap in May and he appeals most dropping down in grade Dusky Days was a decisive winner here on Saturday and could prove the main danger if seeing out the longer trip under a penalty, while recent runner-up Myfavouritesister isn’t the most straightforward but may yet do better for the fitting of headgear

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and one furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Horn Cape looks wellhandicapped on 2024 hurdles form.

Ben Haslam’s Horn Cape (pictured) shoulders top weight here and, whilst he must bounce back from a pulledupeffortoverhurdlesherelasttime,he is unexposed returning to fences. The eight-year-old finished a good second here in a similar chase contest on his penultimate start in May and does look well-handicapped on 2024 hurdles form.

James Moffat and Charlotte Jones teamed up to success when winning this contest last year and the pair rely on Hurricane Ali here. Whilst winless in over two years, the nine-year-old is beginning to look dangerously welltreated, now running off 10lbs below his last winning mark. He has four lengths tofindwithHornCapeontheirmeeting

here in May, but he does arrive here on 7lbbetterterms.

Anyharminasking has been a smart handicap hurdler for the O’Neill team, winning three times, most recently at Newcastle in April from a mark of 124. The eight-year-old ran well when second on chase debut at Uttoxeter lasttimedespitemakingsomejumping errors, and he should improve greatly for the experience here. Willie Shake Hands was back in third that day for SamEngland, losingseconduptherunin, andbothreopposingrivalsmeethere onthesameterms.

Donald McCain’s Bareback Jack remains relatively lightly-raced, having missed almost four years off the track before returning in December 2024. He has a prolific strike rate however, winning four of his eight hurdle races and scoring for the first time since returningtothetrackatBangor-On-Dee in April. BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

Race Description This is a three miles and one furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description This two miles, five furlongs handicapsteeple chase has been designed for fouryear-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
