Saturday, 19th July 2025

I would like to warmly welcome all racegoers to the Curragh today for our fourth Classic of the 2025 flat racing season – the Juddmonte Irish Oaks.

Many thanks to all owners with runners here today – we greatly appreciate your support and wish you success on the track today. Please enjoy the hospitality in our Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the racecourse.

I would also like to thank our race sponsors Irish Stallion Farms, Barberstown Castle Hotel, Gain Equine Nutrition, Eleanora Kennedy and her family, Cavalor, Lavazza, Kwiff, an exciting new sporting betting brand and of course our feature race sponsor Juddmonte who are outstanding supporters of Irish racing.

Your support and that of Horse Racing Ireland enables us to grow our prize fund here at the Curragh and once again, we are seeing a good spread of winners at the Curragh this year. We are pleased to once again see several English trained runners over the weekend – you are very welcome, and we hope you enjoy your visit to the Curragh.

Our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.

We race again here tomorrow where the feature races are the Romanised Minstrel Stakes (Group 2) and the Al Shira’aa Racing Meadow Court Stakes (Group 3).

Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back here at the Curragh many more times during the second half of the season

Best Wishes,

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh. Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-year-old generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse.

The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger.

The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older.

Juddmonte is the international thoroughbred horse racing and breeding enterprise founded in 1980 by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah. Under Prince Khalid’s vision and direction, Juddmonte has, for over 40 years, consistently produced top-class homebred thoroughbred horses competing at the highest level at racecourses across the world. They have bred over 100 individual Group/Grade 1 winners of over 200 Group/Grade 1 races, with their horses racing in Prince Khalid’s famous pink, green and white colours. Prince Khalid’s legacy is being carried on by his family and remain right at the top of the game

HISTORY

The event was established in 1895, and it was originally contested over a mile. It was extended to its present length in 1915.

The first filly to win both the Epsom Oaks and the Irish Oaks was Masaka in 1948, a very talented but temperamental horse owned by The Aga Khan. Since then, a whole host of horses have done the illustrious double Fair Salinia (1978), Blue Wind (1981) and Unite (1987) all won on both sides of the Irish Sea. Ouija Board claimed victory in both in 2004. While more recently Enable came over to romp home for the Gosden’s The late Snowfall was the last to do it in 2021.

In Memory ofTom Lacy

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lacy family following the sad passing ofTom earlier this week. Tom was the mentor of some of Irelands top jockeys and was responsible for giving the late Pat Smullen his start in the racing industry. A former successful jockey as well as trainer, amongst his many winners, he sent out future influential broodmare Ingabelle to win the Phoenix Sprint Stakes (G3).

Alongside son Barry, Tom also bred Persian Force who was placed in the Phoenix Stakes (G1) here at the Curragh.

Sadly, recent weeks also saw the passing of several other friends of the Curragh Racecourse, and we would like to extend our sympathy to the family and friends of leading bookmaker Jimmy Hayes, Marjorie Halford, Gloria O’Donoghue and Mary Sheridan, mother of our Clerk of the Course, Brendan.

In different ways, each made a significant contribution to Irish racing and will be fondly remembered both here at the Curragh and in the wider racing community.

May they rest in peace.

CURRAGH COMMENT

BODHI BEAR brings some potential after an excellent seasonal debut when beating subsequent Listed winner Town And Country at Cork. He then wasn’t disgraced in Group company behind Babouche, although his subsequent Royal Ascot performance will have to be excused. Under Joey Sheridan, he is helped by the 5lb three-year-old allowance and should go close Heavenly Power can reverse form with his last-start conqueror Fort Vega, with a 6lb weight swing leaving him with every chance of scoring once more at this venue Big Gossey and Tango Flare renew rivalries and are lowered in class, with the former fancied to go well once more under a big weight at his beloved Curragh.

WIN: BODHI BEAR

CURRAGH COMMENT

The only filly in the race, TRUE LOVE, can beat the colts. Although a dominant winner of the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, it is the form of her previous run which stands out. Runner-up at Navan back in May, that contest received a significant boost when the winner went on to land the Coventry Stakes. Stepping back up in trip here would be a slight concern for the Aidan O’Brien-trained youngster but, in a four-runner field, the pace is unlikely to be too strong. Despite still being a maiden, stablemate Puerto Rico looks the biggest threat. Having met trouble in running here last time, the son of Wootton Bassett can reverse that form with Learntodiscover WIN: TRUE LOVE

She took a stride or two to pick up inside the two furlong pole, but once she did, nothing could live with her She drew nicely clear and put the race to bed under Ryan Moore in a matter of seconds to win going away to justify the short price The three-year-old Beautiful Diamond benefited from the weight-allowance and picked up second with an eye-catching effort, with Makarova just half a length behind in third.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Not short of pace, Commonwealth Cup runner-up ARIZONA BLAZE can cope with the drop in trip

Although the Adrian Murray-trained colt boasts just the solitary success over the minimum distance, he made most when easily landing a Group 3 at Chantilly over just half a furlong further in April. Always leading his own group when touched off at Royal Ascot, the three-year-old has the speed to be very competitive. The hat-trick seeking Mgheera holds strong claims. Unbeaten in both starts since joining Ed Walker, the mare was withdrawn at the start of the King Charles III Stakes and now has the services of Ryan Moore Fellow British raider Rumstar also looks to have a decent chance

CURRAGH COMMENT

Epsom Oaks winner MINNIE HAUK can double up for trainer Aidan O’Brien. Given that the front two pulled four lengths clear of the remainder, the absence of neck runner-up Whirl appears to have simplified the task for her stablemate Despite the presence of four Ballydoyle fillies in the race, the daughter of Frankel is very much the one to beat. Fourth behind Minnie Hauk last month, Wemightakedlongway failed to build on that effort when occupying the same position in the Pretty Polly. Beaten just a half a length by the selection on debut, Subsonic disappointed on her seasonal reappearance at Naas in April. Having had excuses for that, the Johnny Murtagh-trained filly could be the dark horse

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

MICHAEL JOHN KENNEDY

The Curragh is pleased to run a prestigious Group 3 race to honour the memory of Michael John Kennedy. We are delighted to welcome his wife Eleanora to the races today who has written the following piece to commemorate his amazing life.

2

A Rebel and a Rogue. A righteous Irish-American Defence Attorney who enjoyed a long and successful career as an expert in US Constitutional Law and a Civil Rights Advocate who tried cases in 36 States, and was admitted to practise law in the United States Supreme Court.

Michael Kennedy, known as an exceptional strategist, was a steadfast defender of The Underdog and the First Amendment. He served as a Lieutenant in the US Army while opposing the war in Vietnam and representing conscientious objectors. He was devoted to Justice with grace, dignity and a good dose of toughness. His integrity, courage and fearlessness were legendary

A warrior for the rights of the oppressed and dispossessed, he had the courage of a lion but always found peace in all things Irish. His love and devotion for Ireland was absolute. The Kennedys Cottage in the Black Valley provided him with comfort and privacy for the four decades he lived in “the back of the beyond”. It was filled with stacks of his beloved books by Irish authors, Paddys, Guinness and roaring fires, in front of which he would read Yeats aloud to his Eleanora.

Just outside... The Purple Mountain he climbed, the Upper Lake of Killarney for a row, the neighbours’ scones. Oh it was his Heaven on Earth.

Michael, the fearless legend, was described as “having his heart and soul invested in Irish Freedom” and in the New York Times obituary as “a consummate gentleman with a quick Irish wit and quick Irish temper”. Though he rarely raised his voice, some said he was the personification of Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy “Speak softly but carry a big stick.”

He was unfailing in his loyalty and generosity to his wife Eleanora, children Anna, Scott and Lisa, and his five grandchildren.

Michael’s extensive archives live in the New York Public Library, while the Social Justice Award in his name is presented in Washington DC each September

He is always with me... especially here in Ireland, and honoured to be with all of us today.

Deep bow to you MJK. E

CURRAGH COMMENT

In a race where he doesn’t have to carry any penalties, dual Group 1 winner AL RIFFA stands out. Runner-up in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, the Joseph O’Brien-trained five-year-old can gain his first success of the campaign. Although he is stepping up to this distance for the first time, on breeding the son of Wootton Bassett should have no issues with the extra yardage A proven stayer, the Dermot Weld-trained Harbour Wind has run well under big weights in handicaps of late and reverting to black-type races should suit. With Ryan Moore in the saddle, Shackleton looks the pick of the three Ballydoyle contenders.

CURRAGH COMMENT

EXTRAVAGANT appeals now dropping back to 6f He didn’t make an impression inside the final furlong when third over 7f at Fairyhouse However, on debut over C&D, he kept on for a solid second behind a filly who was subsequently runner-up in a Group 3. Gavoo didn’t feature in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, but earned his crack at that company with a good victory in Listowel. He’s a strong contender Stop The Nation’s third in a Group 3 at this track merits respect, while Parkside Lad is going the right way and got off the mark in Bellewstown. Bobby Mcgee is far from out of it, and Donnacha O’Brien’s Award Ceremony competes off a lovely light weight.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Johnny Murtagh’s SHELBIANA signed off last season with a runner-up berth at Dundalk and made a pleasing return to action when third at Leopardstown last week. She is entitled to come on from that first run for nine months and represents an in-form stable The well-bred Proxima Centauri showed ability last year and wasn’t far behind Shelbiana in fourth at Dundalk. There should be more to come from her Dermot Weld takes the wraps off Mehmas filly Tina’s Charm, who is a half-sister to a Listed winner and is well worth a market check. Minaun View has an official rating of 80 and gets a first-time hood, so it is not hard to see her involved.
