Established in 2019-20, the Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Program is making strides! In just a few short years, the team has put in the work to reach the Championship game and end their season as District Runner-ups, a significant first for the program. It was also their first winning season with an 8-6 record, including marquee wins over Key West, Gulliver, Palmetto and Palmer Trinity. In her final season, team captain and midfielder Avah Lopez ’24 (center), stepdaughter to Debra Amundson Lopez ‘00, led the team with 27 goals, 23 assists, and 97 ground balls.

Dear Westminster family:

Thank you for taking a moment to read this edition of Then & Now

As you enjoy the words and photos on the pages that follow, I hope you experience a journey through the memories and snapshots of Westminster’s past, accompanied by the excitement and visions of Westminster’s future. These stories of faith, inspiration, and resilience are a heartfelt tribute to the Christ-centered faith, enduring spirit, and remarkable achievements of our cherished community.

Within this publication, you’ll find a collection of narratives that paint a beautiful picture of the diverse and vibrant Westminster alumni community. From the bustling corridors of academia to the hallowed halls of professional theaters, our alumni continue to leave an indelible mark on the world around them locally and globally. Take, for example, Derek Wallbank, a proud alumnus of the Class of ‘01, who has carved a distinguished career as a managing editor for Bloomberg in Singapore. Or consider our fine arts students, who seamlessly transition from Westminster’s stage to professional theaters, captivating audiences with their passion, talent, and dedication. Their stories speak to the enduring legacy of artistic excellence fostered on campus. In addition to these features, you will find brief highlights from the lives of other alumni around the world in our Roll Call, and see some great photos from reunion celebrations including the classes of 1983, 2003, and 2013.

Beyond academics, arts, and athletics, Westminster remains fully committed to the spiritual formation of our students. You can read an article in this issue about this commitment supported by our “wholehearted” theme and spiritual formation focus for the year. As we are in the business of empowering learners, inspiring lives, and preparing hearts, we do so with the ultimate goal of developing ambassadors for Christ. At Westminster, students are encouraged to explore not only the depths of knowledge in an academically rigorous environment, but to encounter the depths of the love of Christ and to embrace our need to rely upon God to make us wholehearted.

“Westminster has an incredible legacy and an exciting future.”

Here on campus, our current students thrive within Westminster’s academic signature programs — where innovation and excellence, two of our core values — are the norm. Through hands-on learning experiences and mentorship, they are empowered to pursue their passions and excel in fields such as entrepreneurship, engineering, and biomedical science. In the performing and visual arts, students are thriving in creativity and being recognized for their remarkable artistic accomplishments. Athletically, this magazine illustrates a few exciting examples of excellence in multiple sports as our teams and athletes compete at the highest levels.

Westminster has an incredible legacy and an exciting future. As we look ahead, we are thrilled about the launch of Westbridge, our new program for students with dyslexia. We are in the early phases of capital campaign planning in preparation for the construction of a new athletic complex. We have more families than ever who want to be a part of the Westminster community and as such, enrollment demand has never been stronger. We look forward to telling many more stories of God’s faithfulness in this remarkable community.

Enjoy your journey through these pages, celebrating the collective achievements of our Westminster community — from the success of our athletic programs to the milestones of the graduating Class of 2024. We give credit and thanks to God for His guidance this past school year and throughout Westminster’s history.

Thank you again for your part in this community.

Kind regards,

Scott Jones Head of School

Warriors Through and Through

From students to Westminster employees, these alumni are Warriors through and through. They have come full circle by returning to their roots as dedicated employees of the very school that shaped their formative years. Westminster is proud of these accomplished individuals, once students navigating the halls, who now actively contribute to the school’s growth and development with professionalism and passion.

The commitment displayed by these alumni-turnedemployees goes beyond mere career choices; it represents a heartfelt desire to give back to the school that played a pivotal role in their personal, academic, and spiritual development. A select few were asked what it means to them to be back at Westminster as employees and these were their responses:

“I feel so blessed to have attended Westminster from fourth to twelfth grade. To be part of this community as a student and then to come back and see how the Lord has moved and continues to do so is such a joy and honor.”

JESSICA CARRASQUILLO ’07

Orchestra Director

“God called me to Westminster first as a student and then as a teacher in 2000. I cannot think of a better, more enriching, challenging, rewarding profession than being a teacher here. Westminster gave me the opportunity to grow professionally, personally and spiritually. I was given the opportunity to love children and to be close to the pulse of my own children’s education. Down the road, I hope my name brings smiles to the faces of all my students when they remember ‘Mama Forbes’.”

Mirta Agüero: Thank You For Your Service

The people at Westminster are the hearbeat of the school. This year, we bid farewell to Mirta Agüero, high school Spanish teacher, who retired at the end of the 2023-24 school year. An outstanding individual who has dedicated 18 years to teaching, mentoring, impacting, and loving our students, Agüero was recognized and honored at the Spring Association Meeting in April.

Mirta Agüero was a Westminster parent to Natalie ‘09 and Nicolas ‘07 before she came to work at the school. During her career, she was an integral part of the prayer and planning for the very first Warrior Week in 2006. She also spent some time as a part-time receptionist before being hired to teach Spanish.

Words cannot express our gratitude for Mirta’s impact at Westminster Christian School. As the Master says in Matthew 25:23 “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

FROM WESTMINSTER’S STAGE TO PROFESSIONAL THEATERS:

Fine Arts Students Thrive

Westminster played a pivotal role in shaping the journey of up-and-coming actor Carlos Bravo ’23, providing a strong foundation for his success in the competitive world of theatre. While reflecting on his time at Westminster, Bravo highlighted the school’s state-of-the-art facilities and the impact they had on his theatre education.

“Westminster’s incredible new facilities gave me the space and opportunities to really practice my craft. The Lighthouse is a blessing to perform in,” said Bravo.

He also credits Westminster for surrounding him with supportive teachers that consistently challenged him to refine and perfect his talents.

“Westminster surrounded me with faculty that pushed me to engage in a multitude of performance opportunities. My favorite production was West Side Story. It was a show that pushed me incredibly as a singer as well as an actor,” shared Bravo.

Shortly after graduating from Westminster in 2023, Bravo starred in a professional production of The Little Mermaid with Area Stage Company at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami and is now studying theatre at Fordham University in New York City.

“I’m in my first production at Fordham. It’s an original play called The Practice Room and it’s been a joy to work on!” said Bravo.

As he looks toward the future, Bravo expresses gratitude, stating, “I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and I’m eternally grateful for where Westminster has gotten me today.”

Bravo is not the only fine arts student from Westminster that has found success on the professional stage. Recent graduate Ava Bean ’24 also starred in the professional production of The Little Mermaid.

These Middle School Fine Arts students also found success with the following outside theatre productions:

Ava explains, “Directed by Giancarlo Rodaz, The Little Mermaid was a new, immersive take on the classic tale we all know and love. Working alongside Disney, we will be remounting this production during the summer of 2024!”

Adrian Farrell ’27 has performed with a number of local theatre companies and has starred in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown in Spain, Newsies, Willy Wonka and The Little Mermaid with Area Stage Company as well as Les Misérables at the Miami Children’s Theater, to name a few.

“The success our students’ experience in productions outside of Westminster is a testament to the school’s exceptional fine arts faculty and staff and their unwavering dedication to nurture young talent for the glory of God,” said Angie Spivak-Lopez, director of fine arts.

Westminster has proven to be a transformative launchpad for aspiring actors and students interested in pursuing careers in the arts.

Derek Wallbank ’01: Making Headlines in the Breaking News World

From U.S. presidential elections to the war in Ukraine, Derek Wallbank ’01, managing editor for breaking news at Bloomberg, has written headlines for some of the world’s most important news stories, covering multiple topics and regions.

“I cover most of Asia, the U.S., Europe, Africa and the Middle East… it’s something that I find really exciting,” said Wallbank.

During his compelling career as a journalist, Wallbank has interviewed influential figures like Nancy Pelosi, Paul Ryan, John Boehner, Muhammad Ali, and Joe Biden while he was in the legislative branch.

“I also flew on Air Force One with Obama, have covered multiple summits with Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, and have led coverage for the G20 for several years,” he added.

Before Wallbank made a name for himself in the breaking news arena, he was a student at Westminster Christian School.

“I started Westminster when my mom and I moved from the United Kingdom to Miami. I was in second grade and went all the way through high school.”

Wallbank adds that aside from playing the cello and being captain of the Geography Bee, he was also known for being most talkative.

“I always had an opinion and something to say. I had to figure out how to control that and make it something that would not work toward my detriment,” he shared.

credit for pushing me and teaching me to keep pushing,” he said.

Wallbank went on to study journalism at Michigan State University and then received an MBA from the University of Illinois. Before accepting his current position at Bloomberg, Wallbank says he spent time covering Congress in Washington, D.C. It was then that he became involved with the investigative story that he’s “most proud of.”

“I felt like I was given an opportunity for a good education, but I saw these kids in rural parts of the U.S. and they weren’t being given a chance. I did deep, investigative reporting on this and the schools that we highlighted received the funding they needed to be fixed and rebuilt. They didn’t have to wait 30 years for a school without mold in the cafeteria and that wasn’t drafty during the winter,” he explained.

Wallbank now lives in Singapore with his wife Eeda and two daughters, Emma and Claire. He’s also good friends with fellow Westminster graduate and Singapore resident, Steven Hames ’02

Wallbank now credits his teachers from Westminster for helping him transform what may have been perceived as a pesky habit into a successful career.

Wallbank now credits his teachers from Westminster for helping him transform what may have been perceived as a pesky habit into a successful career.

“I had some really great teachers, like Rob LaVohn, who inspired me and worked with me a lot to be able to hone the skills that I now use every day… I have to give [my teachers]

“I was really interested in the schools on Native American reservation land. A lot of them were in really horrible conditions,” he said.

A member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs at the time said students on reservations in Minnesota were dealing with “mold problems or huge leaks.” Some schools, Wallbank shared, would have to wait years before seeing improvements.

“I knew when I got stationed in Singapore that I had one friend… my kids call him ‘Uncle Steph’,” said Wallbank.

When asked what else he has taken away from his time at Westminster, Wallbank said, “when you come from one of the best, Christ-driven schools that there is, you have to take that and do your bit. You have to make the world a better place than how you found it.”

WESTMINSTER HIGH SCHOOL

Boasts Seven Academic Signature Programs

In addition to providing a comprehensive high school curriculum, Westminster boasts seven signature programs intended to challenge students in specific areas of focus and empower them to pursue their interests as well as develop their God-given gifts. The seven programs, AP Capstone, Biomedical, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Fine Arts, Mass Media, and Science Research, are designed to enrich academic coursework and provide students with real-world connections and experiences.

“We want to bridge high school education with a student’s potential future career,” said Jannett Lopez, high school assistant principal and head of signature programs at Westminster.

AP CAPSTONE

The programs also include components that can be transferable to college and beyond.

“There are AP courses involved in every signature program. Students can also graduate with industry-specific certifications, portfolios or diplomas,” added Lopez.

Additionally, those enrolled in a signature program may also apply to become an Emerald Scholar. Emerald Scholars enroll in the school’s most challenging courses, and benefit from participation in exclusive enrichment activities such as internships, independent research, service projects, and more.

AP Seminar and AP Research courses seek to develop students’ critical thinking skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. Students who pass both AP Seminar and AP Research, as well as four other AP exams, will graduate with the AP Capstone diploma from the College Board.

“I believe the program is preparing all of us for the future because it teaches students how to research and write in a well, thought-out, and professional manner. In AP Seminar, I am able to create complex arguments about interesting research topics and, in AP Research, I am able to develop my own research project.”

BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

The Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science program allows students to take an investigative approach to real and current medical issues. Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, students engage in compelling, hands-on activities and work together to find solutions to real-world problems. Our professional partners are an integral part of student success and provide mentorship throughout the program.

“I absolutely love how hands-on the program is. It is a great experience being able to learn about real medical injuries, terminology, and conditions through labs and physical models.”

-ELENI MEKRAS ’26

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The Entrepreneurship program is designed to bridge real-world business trends with foundational principles and methods that are commensurate with the industry. This robust curriculum prepares students for college courses and the business world at large. Students will demonstrate their personal growth and entrepreneurial mind through the design and development of their own business venture.

“The program has been extremely effective in teaching me important methods and ideas to apply to my entrepreneurship career thus far. In addition to the lessons, having fellow entrepreneurs speak in class has provided me with very practical knowledge and amazing connections that I will use in my future career.”

- JUSTIN SANCHEZ ’25

ENGINEERING

The Engineering program utilizes the nationally-recognized PLTW curriculum. Students learn about the engineering design process, robotics, programming, critical thinking and problem solving through project-based lessons, while incorporating national standards in math, science, and technology.

“I have enjoyed the program’s hands-on learning experience. The teachers make it a priority to learn by doing. This unique curriculum turns seemingly difficult concepts into fun activities and puzzles to solve and has prepared me for topics in college and future coursework.”

- VALENTINA STROMEYER ’24

FINE ARTS

The Fine Arts program is for students who are passionate about performing or visual arts. Dance, music, theatre, 2D art, and 3D art represent a form of thinking and a way of knowing that is based on human imagination and judgment. The Fine Arts actively involve learners as creators, organizers, observers, and evaluators.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to really explore the arts as a whole through the many performances and events that span across all the different disciplines within Fine Arts. Through the dedicated staff and teachers, this program has definitely prepared me for the future. I have seen the benefits of living a goal-oriented life that also honors God.”

- SEBASTIAN DE VARONA ’24

MASS MEDIA

The Mass Media program explores the methodologies of journalism, broadcasting, public relations and marketing research. Courses explore the importance and practice of responsible, professional, and ethical communication in a digital age, while infusing the latest advancements in the industry.

“The Mass Media program has provided insight into how much dedication, perseverance, collaboration, and resilience it takes to work in this field. Filming or editing can come with a lot of challenges and roadblocks, and Mass Media has definitely introduced me to the adaptability that this career requires.”

- ISABELLA DEL VALLE ’24

SCIENCE RESEARCH

The award-winning Science Research program is intended for students who are highly self-motivated, curious, and scientifically minded. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to engage in science as a process, become innovators, develop communication skills, work with scientific mentors, and participate in competitions.

“I’ve found the Science Research program to be a thrilling journey of discovery, allowing me to delve into fascinating topics beyond the classroom. The program’s emphasis on independent research has greatly enhanced my problem-solving abilities and nurtured a profound love for scientific inquiry. Through exploring scientific challenges, I feel well-equipped for future academic and professional pursuits, developing skills that extend beyond the realm of science and into broader aspects of life.”

Wholehearted

Surrender

This year’s theme and verse was brought to life through weekly chapels, devotionals shared with students and families, and a book written for preschool and elementary students. In more than 60 years, Westminster’s mission to develop ambassadors has not changed. Take a moment to read the brief article written by Director of Spiritual Formation John Bishop that sheds light on the theme and verse selected for the 202324 school year and how the truth of Psalm 86:11 came alive for our students and families.

We started the 2023-24 school year talking about how life often feels a little like “whack-a-mole.” No matter how hard we try, we can never quite predict everything that needs to get done or everyone who needs our time. We invest in doing one thing well only to turn around and discover something else has dropped.

So, we “swing the mallet faster.” In utter defiance of reality, we believe, “I can divide and conquer.” And sometimes we do, and this leads us to believe we can do it. So, we keep swinging the mallet trying to put points on the board.

But at what cost? Is a never-ending hum of low-grade anxiety the best we can hope for? Our time, relationships, hopes, aspirations, goals, and hearts are divided. Is this the best we can hope for? Can’t we ever put it all back together again?

This year, we wrestled with what it means to be wholehearted from the truth found in Psalm 86:11, “Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart that I may fear your name.”

In the elementary school, a team planned weekly chapels to lead students in worship and teach them about loving Jesus with their whole hearts. Each week Elementary School Counselor Kim Brigham would start chapel the same way, “God, teach me to be…” and all the children would shout in response, “WHOLEHEARTED!” We followed Mac and Mica and all their friends as they confronted challenges in Wandering Through WorldWonder: Mac & Mica’s Adventure, a children’s book written for our school to illustrate the challenge of becoming wholehearted.

In the middle and high school chapels, Warrior Week, and GR8 Escape, we got to hear from thirty different teachers, alumni, local pastors, guests and even students on topics ranging from identity in Christ to biblical relationships, and from gratitude to finishing well. Each week, students, faculty, local church teams, and even the grammy-nominated Christian band We the Kingdom led us in singing songs of worship.

Julian Infante ’15 encouraged students to trust God’s plan for their lives.

All of this was done with the hope that we might learn God’s way, rely on His faithfulness, and become wholehearted. So, did it work? How do we rank ourselves at the end of a year focused on becoming more wholeheartedly devoted to God? Have we finished well? Have we left it all on the field? Have we finally hung up the whack-a-mole mallet? Are these even the right questions to ask?

I don’t know.

Here’s what I hope - by telling the story of our broken sinful hearts’ need for Jesus, our savior, who was put to death on the cross to pay for our sins so we might be restored to relationship with God the Father, we might realize we can’t do it without Jesus. Then, finally, we can hang up our whack-a-mole mallet.

The secret to becoming a wholehearted follower of Jesus is we cannot earn it; it is a gift that comes through surrender. Becoming wholehearted is not something we do; it is something He does in us as we follow Him.

As we turn the page to focus on next year, we are continuing the journey of spiritual formation as we learn God’s way and look to follow Him. Our new verse

Sophia Poveda ’17 shared about divine design and how to find our purpose.

The

secret to becoming a wholehearted follower of Jesus is we cannot earn it; it is a gift that comes through surrender.

will be Psalm 1:3, and the new theme is Thrive (much more on that next year). The story, however, is going to be the same; it always will be. We need Jesus! We can never do it all on our own strength. We can never fix our broken hearts. We can only surrender to Jesus and, “Like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither,” find that we will thrive.

I was meeting with a student from the class of 2023 the other day. He had experienced a profound moment with Jesus a few months before he graduated, and we’ve stayed in touch this year.

He’s in a Christian group in college. He’s continuing to find freedom from addictions that had held him in bondage through much of his high school experience. He’s learning to trust Jesus and dreaming about the possibility of doing mission work. Who knows what God is doing in this young man’s heart, but it feels to me like He’s healing it bit by bit, just like He is doing with mine.

I’m honored to be privy to this young man’s story, and I take it as a sign that God is working in the way that only He can - in and through the hearts of those who are devoted to His way. I’m looking forward to thriving in Christ with our students and families in 2024-25.

In addition to weekly chapel, middle and high school students meet in small groups with a mentor to discuss the week’s message. Scan the QR codes to read the weekly devotional and discussion questions for each semester.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE

A Campaign to Enhance and Strengthen Westminster

Head of School Scott Jones and the Westminster Board of Trustees have been prudent in thinking differently about the expansion of Westminster’s campus and how to fund capital projects in efficient ways that further strengthen the school’s financial and operational position. Westminster is executing a bold plan of transformational capital and programmatic priorities that will continue to set the school apart for generations to come. First on the list is a new Athletic Complex.

Components of the Athletic Complex

The new, state-of-the-art Athletic Complex is the first priority to be addressed. The goal is for this development to include the following:

• Strength and Performance Center, which will feature a full range of the most current strength, dynamic, and cardio equipment

• Athletic Training Room

• Varsity Boys and Girls Locker Rooms

• Academic and Multi-Purpose Flex Spaces

• Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame

• Wrestling Room

• Hydrotherapy Room

• Data and Analytics Room

• Esports Room

• Film Room

• Warrior Alumni Room

The Westminster field sports experience will also be greatly elevated through the construction of a new main stadium on The Gutierrez Field for varsity level competitions in football, soccer, and lacrosse. Standing as a centerpiece of large outdoor events, the new stadium will feature the best of athletic competition elements for athletes, coaches, and spectators alike. Student athletes will benefit from larger, custom football, lacrosse and soccer locker rooms within the building; coaches will enjoy the flexibility of hosting team meetings and film sessions and ease of access onto the main field; and spectators will appreciate the large grandstands, press box, and VIP suites.

A volunteer campaign steering committee has been seated to lead the way for a formal capital campaign that is underway. We are grateful for the leadership and commitment of committee members and Westminster parents Alex Blanco ’00, Jenny Coya, Jud Henry, Hamilton Jones ’01, Leo Leon, Jose Nicolas ’97, Head of School Scott Jones, Director of Advancement Monica Sanchez and Athletics Director Ben Warren. Their roles are critical to laying the foundation for this transformative campaign.

We look forward with great anticipation to the many inspiring ways the new spaces will strengthen and impact Westminster students, student athletes, and the broader school community. We will have more exciting news to share in the fall along with some key awareness gathering events. Stay tuned!

Alumni also enjoyed a private campus tour and a VIP all-alumni BBQ.

Reunions were also celebrated by the classes of ‘83, ‘03, and ‘13. Visit the Roll Call section to view photos from these events.
