At WCNY, we are thrilled to have been selected by the Corporation of Public Broadcasting as one of the stations that will participate in a nationwide Digital Transformation Project. Funded by the CPB, the project will be facilitated by the Poynter Institute, a well-respected media standards and training organization. It will include up to 75 PBS, NPR stations, and joint licensees, like WCNY, which have both NPR and PBS affiliations. Identifying ways to use existing and emerging technology to tell our region’s stories and serve our communities is an important part of our planning for what is to come. Innovation and exploration have always been part of WCNY’s DNA. With this opportunity, we will benefit not only from sharing our ideas, but also from learning from stations that are also reimagining their content delivery platforms to provide new experiences and to discover new audiences. We could not do any of this without the generous support that you provide. Your confidence and support for WCNY's values and vision allows us to provide both the classic programming you expect from WCNY, and also to try new things – some of which work well (like the TV Classroom Network while schools were forced to teach remotely during Covid) and some of which don't take off but that provide valuable learning for future endeavors. As we start the Digital Transformation Project, a few of the goals we have are to: • Create a podcasting service that will be streamed online so listeners can hear, enjoy and easily subscribe to podcasts we help them discover. • Collaborate with our sister stations in Albany and Rochester to use a shared content management system to enhance the quality and quantity of our statehouse coverage. • Evolve our HD3 radio station into a community broadcasting channel aligned with a new non-profit news service being launched in Central New York. • Find ways to make it easier to stay in touch with our members and donors through improved digital functionality on our website. • Explore making WCNY’s travel auction a 24/7/365 program available online for people around the country looking for great travel deals. • Digitize Enterprise America, the station’s unique and proprietary fiscal literacy program aimed at middle school students. We will keep you apprised of the progress on these and other initiatives and will look to you for feedback on whether these new offerings improve your connection with and appreciation of public broadcasting. Thank you, again, for your support for WCNY. From all of us here to each of you across the 19 counties of Central New York, we wish you a most wonderful and enriching new year.

Food - find delicious new recipes! Eating well can benefit many areas of health. Balanced meals can help you live a longer, happier, and overall healthier life. Finding different recipes to try out can make you feel more excited about trying different healthy meals.
Will Bonsall’s Succotash
Ingredients: 1 to 2 large sweet red peppers, diced 3 cups fresh shell beans (frozen lima beans work well if you can’t find fresh shell beans) 3 cups corn kernels (frozen is fine) 2 medium zucchinis, chopped 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt and Pepper, to taste
Directions:
Bring a large pot of water to boil. Turn down to a simmer and cook the fresh shell beans in boiling water until tender. This can take anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes, depending on the variety and age of the shell bean. Once tender, drain the beans and put aside. (Keep the liquid for making soup or watering plants!) In a large skillet on medium heat, sauté the diced peppers in the olive oil for about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the zucchini and cook for another 5 to 10 minutes. Add the corn and shell beans and cook everything together for another 10 to 15 minutes or until tender and juicy. Add a tiny bit of the bean’s cooking water if needed. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve hot. Optional serving suggestions include fresh grated parmesan, fresh chopped herbs, and a slice of crusty bread. Mental Health How to use the outdoors as a de-stressor: 1. Position your office desk near or facing a window. Workers with a view of nature report to have less job stress.
Bettering your mental health is a huge component of bettering your overall health. Your mental health is likely to change over time, so it’s important to always monitor and improve it. Some ways include going outside more often and checking in with yourself.
2. Get into an outdoor sport. This encourages physical activity as well as the benefits of an open space. 3. Go to someplace with urban nature. If you live in the city, going to parks, rooftop gardens, and other places with urban nature can have the same positive effects as someone who lives in a green landscape. 4. Take a walk. Having time to observe and meet people along the way can also make you feel less lonely.

When you work out continuously, you’ll lower your risk for a variety of conditions, like Alzheimer’s and heart disease, and also look and feel younger. Additionally, by staying fit, you can have a more active brain and better memory in the future.
Get in your daily exercise with these PBS shows: "Movement with Mar"
Sleep There are many factors that contribute to insomnia. Some of these include stress, an inconsistent routine, depression, and electronics. It isn’t surprising that getting a good amount of restful sleep is an important part of life. It’s necessary for everyone to take measures to combat insomnia. Luckily, for less extreme cases, physical exercise and relaxation techniques can do the trick.

Arthur's 25th Season After 25 seasons, 4 Daytime Emmy Awards, and a George Foster Peabody Award, the "Arthur" television series is coming to an end. The animated series aims to help foster an interest in reading and writing, encourage positive social skills, and model age-appropriate problem-solving strategies. The show first began with children’s books written and illustrated by Marc Brown who came up with the idea of the character Arthur when telling his son a bedtime story. After being published, the stories about Arthur, his family, and friends quickly won over many people. Since it’s humble beginnings, the "Arthur" series has come to be loved by many. After hearing about the show’s final season, many people have taken to social media to share how the show impacted their childhood. They expressed their gratitude for the longest-running kids animated series by posting about the escape it provided and the lessons they learned through watching each episode unfold. Although the television series may be ending, additional content will be shared in order to teach more children the lessons that Arthur and his friends have learned. The producers hope that Arthur’s influence will continue to shape as many people in the future as he has in the past and present. Tune in to watch the last season of "Arthur," premiering in winter 2022!

LINER NOTES Your favorite radio station, WCNY Classic FM, is 50 years old, and the celebration has just begun! A reception to mark the milestone was held at the WCNY Robert J. Daino Broadcast and Education Center on December 4, the actual anniversary of the station’s sign on. During that event, we honored our “Sounds of Jazz” master, the one and only Leo Rayhill, for his 50 years on the air with us. His was the first voice heard on WCNY-FM way back in 1971, and he’s still the elder statesman of our radio family. We also took time to recognize the many volunteers who worked hard for decades to provide our “Readout” audio service to the local print and visually-impaired community. For each month of 2022, we will have a fun and unique way to keep the 50th anniversary observance going. Remember Flat Stanley? Well, in January we bring you Flat Schubert! Look for your personal Flat Schubert cutout on this page of this magazine. Take him with you around town or anytime you’re traveling in 2022, snap a selfie with him, and post it on the Classic FM Facebook page with #FlatSchubertWCNY. It’s just a way for us all to have some fun in the middle of our Central New York winter, and beyond. We also welcome two new hosts to WCNY Classic FM. Jonathan Hwang and Spencer Phillips joined our team in November, and share duties with Bruce Paulsen as hosts of Morning “Classic Choices,” weekdays 6-10 a.m. Both Jonathan and Spencer are professional musicians and members of Symphoria. Jonathan is the principal second violinist. Spencer is the principal double bassist and the orchestra’s librarian. Both of these gentlemen bring a wealth of classical music knowledge to our airwaves, joining our talented team of local hosts who not only announce, but curate the wonderful classical music they play for you. As for special Classic FM programming to look forward to in January and February, listen for a time-honored holiday tradition: “New Year’s Day Live from Vienna,” January 1st at 11 a.m. Also stay tuned for a special program honoring Martin Luther King on MLK Day, Monday, January 17th. Thank you for listening to Classic FM!

Take him to the grocery store, bring him on your hikes, share a boat ride or a trip down the ski slope. Be sure to snap a picture and tag it on Facebook with #FlatSchubertWCNY! It’s just as easy to bring WCNY Classic FM along on your travels, too. On your car radio, with the TuneIn app on your phone, through your Amazon Alexa (or similar device), or go to the website – wcny.org – and listen live 24 hours a day. WCN Y
NEWS
TOWER
"Ivory Tower" has been a part of WCNY since its first episode in 2002. The show's goal has always been to bring academics from colleges across CNY, ranging from Syracuse, Cornell, Colgate, Onondaga Community College, and Cortland to Cazenovia, Le Moyne, Utica, and others.
The show brings national, state, and local topic discussion and debate about current events, politics, health, news, and much more to viewers. The uniqueness of "Ivory Tower" is you get to hear differing opinions and debates from arguably the most qualified and informed minds in the CNY area. Whether it's debating specific policies or arguing for or against bills, on "Ivory Tower," you will hear both sides to an issue, and after the episode, you will come away informed and understanding of the whole issue. "Ivory Tower" this past year celebrated its 1000th episode, Robert Spitzer's retirement, and started up its 18th season. Throughout those countless years, many faces have been present in the debate seats, and the show has been through enough time to feature five presidential election cycles. The ability for the show to have lasted this long has to be credited to the moderators, panelists, and production team for the countless hours and work they put in to provide CNY with one of the top political and news talk shows. While 2021 has come to a close, another year begins for "Ivory Tower." This coming year "Ivory Tower" will commence its 19th season in July and mark its 20th year since airing in 2002. While it will hit this significant milestone this year, the show is far from over. Like a finely aged wine or a flower entering spring, the show is only going to get better. This coming season of "Ivory Tower" is one that you will not want to miss. The midterm elections will, of course, have a prominent feature during the year, but who knows what else will be around the corner for our academicians to debate and discuss.

The #1 hospital in Syracuse. We are the only hospital in the region to be named a Best Regional Hospital 7 years in a row. Awards are great, but we strive to earn something even more valuable — the trust of the people of Central New York. Our doctors, nurses and specialists work hard to advance our practices and medical technology while providing the highest level of care — every day to every patient.

Created in 2003, the Syracuse International Film Festival seeks to engage, entertain, inform, and inspire through innovative films and media programs, and to help the local film industry grow. This is possible thanks to the support of the arts, local businesses, and a strong partnership with WCNY. This year’s Film Fest launched on WCNY with 16 hours of films and special programs, followed by live weekend viewings at the Redhouse Arts Center and Syracuse University’s Shemin Auditorium. WCNY helped to make the event a success by reaching out to its viewers in 19 counties through email and CONNECT Magazine.
