President's Letter
Maybe it is the dawn of spring that reminds us of what an extraordinary part of the world we live in.
Maybe it is a stroll through the city center in Utica, a drive along the lake in Oswego, or a visit to one of our cultural centers like the Munson or Everson museums, or the Landmark or Stanley theatres. Maybe it is the energy of strings resonating from a chamber music ensemble, an orchestra, or a gathering of guitars and banjos on a random front porch.
Or, perhaps, it is the charm of Colgate, Hamilton, or Le Moyne colleges, a hike through the trails of Nelson Swamp and meadows of Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, or the crackling sound of water trickling over rocks in the creeks that cross the Adirondacks.
At WCNY, we are grateful for your support which enables us to capture some of this regional magic and share it with our listeners and viewers across radio, television, and streaming platforms.
So, how do we create places where we can recognize the range and the depth of this intellectual, environmental, and all-around spirited pursuit of insight, enlightenment, and adventure?
During the rest of this year and into the seasons ahead, we will continue to present special episodes of an occasional series called “Community Connect.” Beginning with InterFaith Works' "Faiths United" song and prayer ceremony for peace, which we recently aired, WCNY will seek the unique activities that spring from the streets, fields, town squares, and central libraries spanning from Cortland and Cayuga to Herkimer and Jefferson counties.
In the months ahead, keep an eye out for “Community Connect” episodes featuring the resurgence of the native brook trout in our northern waterways, a traveling exhibit about life at the U.S.-Mexico border brought to the Nancy Cantor Warehouse in Syracuse's Near Westside by SU's La Casita and the University of Texas, and Porchfest—a musical celebration that started in Tompkins County and is spreading across the country and throughout the globe.
Each of these special reports aims to capture the spirit of Central New York and the Mohawk Valley. Additionally, we will continue to take “Ivory Tower” on the road to local college campuses, broadcast a film on Rome's annual Bocce World Series, recognize local veterans on Honor Flights to the war memorials in Washington D.C., and show features about the New York State Special Olympics Winter Games, which brought great athletes and even greater stories to our ice rinks and ski slopes this winter.
WCNY is honored to present these emblems of the rich and diverse talents and interests that embody the strength of the 19 counties that the station strives to serve.
Thank you for making this possible. Mitch Gelman

Classic FM Fundraiser
WCNY will host its spring Classic FM fundraiser on June 9 and 10. The two-day event will feature special programming, gifts, and voices typically only heard behind the scenes at WCNY.
This annual event is critically important to WCNY’s ability to offer new programs and crystalclear classics on our FM station and livestream.
Friends of WCNY can make donations online at wcny.org/ supportclassical or by calling 800-451-9269 now through June 10.
Each gift will strengthen WCNY’s commitment to providing exceptional programing and classical music to our listening region. Thank you for your additional support during this fundraiser.

Liner Notes
WCNY is dedicated to delivering thoughtful, comprehensive, and independent coverage of New York state government and politics, so we are proud to shine a spotlight this month on the work of our Albany-based journalists delivering “The Capitol Pressroom.”
Every weekday, Host David Lombardo and Senior Producer Peter Wendler produce unique, hard-hitting interviews covering a wide range of topics and featuring influential policymakers. These interviews are broadcast on more than two dozen public radio stations around the state. Each one-hour episode offers a nuanced look at important issues that are packaged in a way that makes the content accessible to the average New Yorker and meaningful to politically connected listeners.
And weekly during the legislative session, our team at the Capitol produces the “Dispatches from Planet Albany” podcast, featuring insider perspectives on the deployment of power and politics in state government. Now in its second season, this fun and sometimes irreverent show has become a must-listen discussion for political reporters, lobbyists, and those in power on “Planet Albany.”
David and Peter have also begun to take their show on the road, hosting live recordings around Albany.
To keep up with “The Capitol Pressroom” and “Dispatches from Planet Albany,” check out capitolpressroom.org or subscribe to the shows wherever you get your favorite podcasts. The website also has an audio vault containing more than four years of interviews, David’s written reporting on the Capitol, and a radio broadcast schedule.
Quality, impartial political and government reporting is at your fingertips, from WCNY.

Long Walking: The New Travel Trend
We, those over 50, have discovered a new way to travel that creates a more intimate and memorable experience. Less is now more. One of my “Zestful Aging Podcast” guests, Cassandra Overby, an expert in walking vacations in Europe, explained that picking one or two places to explore rather than checking off a city each day creates a totally different travel experience. She told me that she loves going to the same restaurants multiple times so she can get to know the chef. The vacation is calmer and less full of logistics.
Since the pandemic, more people are searching for meaningful experiences. You may already be familiar with the Camino de Santiago, a Medieval pilgrimage in Spain. Martin Sheen’s 2010 film “The Way’’ gave us a look at what a long walk could do for both our physical and mental health, and it did wonders for the Camino economy. Andrew McCarthy, one of the original brat packers, wrote a thoroughly enjoyable book, “Walking with Sam,” about walking the Camino with his teenaged, angsty son.
Not only is travel trending towards more intimate experiences, but more women are forging out on their own to walk and have the kind of transformational experiences that these types of trips offer. At midlife, we may have different ideas of fun than our partners. I’ve recently discovered an entire communi ty of women over 50 connecting through their shared interest in walking the Camino. One such Facebook group is called, appropriately, “Women of a Certain Age” or WOACA. Their community has 10,000 members and continues to grow. The founder of the WOACA group, Alyssa Golden, and I plan to communicate while we are both walking the Camino this spring. And I’ll be bringing along my mobile mic to capture the experiences of fellow Camino walkers. Stay tuned!
We strive to understand your business and your individual objectives and offer the legal experience to help you achieve them.
