When they walk into a room, eyes spin toward Matt Read and Alex DeRosa, drawn by a quiet charisma that says, “Yeah. We got this.”

Editor Lauren Easton

Maybe it is Matt’s tattoos, full sleeves of ideas uniting a stalking orange-and-black striped tiger, a statue of liberty, a serpent of division, and a voice of reason.

Graphic Designer Alexis Cleveland

Maybe it is Alex’s jeans or his beard, just enough to cover an ever-present smirk that tells you that, yes, he is in on the game.

Or maybe it is just that they like to have a good time and are inviting us to come along. You'll find Matt and Alex, the hosts of "Spatchcock Funk - Dope Food, Strong Drinks, Great Stories," at the party they are throwing on WCNY, streaming services, and across PBS television stations starting this spring. Matt wields the spatula (depending on the day, the spatula either sports a smiley face or a skull), and Alex wields the camera. Together, they've got the newest, edgiest, most fun cooking show in town. What town? Your town. Our town. Any town. As Matt and Alex like to say, just bring the people you love, and they will take care of the rest. “Spatchcock Funk” (spatchcock is a cooking term for splitting the breastbone of a chicken so it grills evenly—really, you can look it up!) delivers recipes for food and drinks themed around the events they are planning. Join Matt, Alex, family, friends, and producer Susan Bitter for a boat party that kicks off with a watermelon margarita; a retro 90s gathering that’s all about the T-shirts and the handcrafted video rental pizza; a brunch to celebrate Matt’s wife’s promotion (the “Boss Bitch Brunch”) featuring ribeye hash and an alligator cheesecake; a concert tailgate with Bad Bunny empanadas; and a poker night where all the cards—and some amazing food—are on the table. They tell me that these guys still have day jobs. Alex balanced a notable role at Syracuse University while also shooting videos for a local hockey team. Matt exchanged a position on Madison Avenue to teach marketing at Le Moyne College. Regardless, their focus now is centered on the "Funk." Matt and Alex slide through each show with the humility that comes with the confidence of people who know they’ve got something good: a working class take on some elite menus.

TELEVISION

You're invited to the "Nolly" Screening Event on Wednesday, March 13 at 4 p.m. at the WCNY-TV Studios!

Premieres Sunday, March 17 at 9 p.m. on WCNY-TV Starring Helena Bonham Carter, "Nolly" tells the story of soap opera legend Noele “Nolly” Gordon, one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and 70s, whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. A bold exploration of how the establishment turns on women who refuse to play by the rules, "Nolly" is an outrageously fun and wildly entertaining ride through Gordon’s most tumultuous years, and a sharp, affectionate and heart-breaking portrait of a forgotten icon.

On Saturday, Jan. 6, we hosted a screening of the Season 4 premiere of "All Creatures Great and Small," and what a fantastic turnout it was! Thank you to all who attended the event! We'd also like to express our gratitude to those who generously donated pet supplies. We are pleased to announce that the items were donated to All Creatures Big and Small Pet Rescue after being hand-delivered to a couple of their wonderful volunteers. Join us in celebrating this popular MASTERPIECE series and the beauty of the Dales by touring the actual locations where filming takes place. Tune in to WCNY-TV on Sunday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. for the "All Creatures Great and Small: Touring the Dales" special!

A new, occasional series called "WCNY Community Connect" will premiere this month. It will feature coverage of events that reflect the hearts and souls of the communities that we serve in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley. The series will kick off with an episode that captures a recent Faiths United for Peace gathering organized by InterFaith Works and hosted at Onondaga Community College. The group brought together a cross-denominational coalition of faith leaders who united in song and prayer to inspire hope for the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan, and Congo. We reside in a community that takes immense pride in uplifting one another. We are all committed to improving education, economic opportunity, and the quality of life across our villages, towns, and cities. There is so much going on that raises our spirits, ranging from music festivals or farmers markets to antique car shows, school graduations, dance recitals, and other gatherings that enrich our magnificent region. "WCNY Community Connect" will aim to recognize the special moments that highlight this intrinsic character of our area. We hope you will tune in to "Faiths United for Peace" on Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. on WCNY-TV or watch it anytime on demand at www.wcny.org. Additionally, we invite you to enjoy future episodes of "WCNY Community Connect" on both television and Community FM radio.

EDUCATION

Season 4 Premieres Monday, March 25

WCNY Welcomes Students to Enterprise America!

Learn more at pbskids.org

WCNY is proud to host Enterprise America, a program that teaches middle school students about civic readiness and financial literacy. Schools from across our WCNY communities are invited to participate in this very hands-on, engaging experience. The program begins in the schools, where sixth and seventh grade students are taught a core of five basic lessons. These lessons focus on how a city is run, as well as how businesses and individuals balance spending and earnings. Enterprise America provides teachers with learning outcome objectives and a curriculum guide for obtaining them. Once students have completed their in-class learning, they come to the Enterprise America City on the third floor of WCNY. Here, they take part in a day-long, immersive experience. It’s the game of life where each student is given a role in city government or a job in one of thirteen businesses. There are loans to take out and repay, payrolls to make, products to build and sell, and laws to pass. It’s a very fun, fastpaced day where students dive into "real life" scenarios and learn important lessons as they look ahead to their futures.

RADIO

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR RECENT CLASSIC FM MUSIC EDUCATOR AWARD HONOREES!

Erica Walters Cayuga Community College

Bethany Colenzo Holland Patent Central Schools

Eric Petit-McClure Nottingham High School

Casey Vanderstouw Charles W. Baker High School

LINER NOTES Greetings from all of your friends here at WCNY-FM! As always, we sincerely appreciate your ongoing support, and your loyal listening! Here are some springtime updates from each of our three WCNY radio stations: Classic FM Year two of the Classic FM Music Educator Award program is in full swing. To date this school year, we have honored several wonderful local music teachers, including Professor Erica Walters of Cayuga Community College, Bethany Colenzo of Holland Patent Central Schools, Eric Petit-McClure of Syracuse’s Nottingham High School, and Casey Vanderstouw of Baldwinsville’s Charles W. Baker High School. Each of these teachers was nominated by students, parents, administrators, or their peers for being among the best at what they do. And YOU can nominate a deserving music teacher by completing a simple form anytime at www.wcny.org/musiceducator. Also on Classic FM, March honors Women’s History, and Diane Jones’ “Feminine Fusion” will take the month to bring us on a virtual trip around the world to highlight the incredible contributions of women to centuries of classical music. Listen to “Feminine Fusion” on Classic FM every Sunday at 2 p.m. We are also very proud to tell you that “Feminine Fusion” has just received a prestigious challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, in part recognizing the show’s focus on traditionally under-served and underrepresented musicians and audiences. Community FM Our station featuring “Local People, Local Perspectives” is already approaching its second birthday! Seven days a week, you can listen to up to eight full hours of a wide variety of original local programming and quality local podcasts (see the program schedule in this and every edition of CONNECT). Listen to a live stream at www.wcny.org/communityfm, or go to that same web page to listen to any of our great shows and podcasts on-demand anytime, on YOUR schedule. Give Community FM a listen—you won’t be disappointed! OLDIES HD WCNY also programs a terrific Oldies radio station. And by Oldies, we don’t mean 80s, 90s, 2000s… OUR Oldies station gives you “classic” oldies, all the hits of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. If you’re a fan of that era of music, Oldies HD is for you! Plus, every weekday morning from 6-10 a.m., WCNY’s Joel Stockton spins all the hits on “AM in the AM,” a throwback to 1970s rock and roll AM radio. As someone who was a teenager back then, I can tell you it takes me right back to tooling down the highway in my ’71 Dodge Charger! Go to www.wcny.org/radio to listen to a live stream, or ask an Alexa device to “play WCNY” and follow the instructions to “listen to HD-2.” Ron Lombard FM Station Director

All of us at WCNY are saddened by the loss of our longtime friend and colleague, Neva Pilgrim. Neva was the host and producer of “Fresh Ink” for nearly 30 years. She served as the Artistic Director of the Society for New Music for more than 50 years. Neva passed away in January with her husband and son at her side. She was always a staunch advocate for the power of contemporary classical music, bringing the latest new works to the airwaves each week during “Fresh Ink” on Classic FM. Her loss will be felt for many years to come.

MEET THE WCNY COMMUNITY FM HOSTS

Ibrahim Mohamed and Maryna Bagovska

Our New Neighbors

The first original local program to launch on Community FM was “Our New Neighbors,” a monthly half-hour show highlighting immigrants and refugees who have resettled in Central New York, and the great, positive impact they have had on our community. The show is co-hosted by two New Americans: Ibrahim Mohamed, originally from Somalia, fled the civil war there in 2007 and spent several years in Uganda before moving to the U.S. in 2021. In the U.S., he reunited with his family and pursued higher education.

Maryna Bagovska family, originally from Ukraine, pursued their dream of new opportunities by winning the State Department’s Green Card Lottery in 2020. That year, they migrated to Central New York while the pandemic was ongoing.

Both Ibrahim and Maryna work at Catholic Charities, where they assist with refugee resettlement. We appreciate both their personal journeys and their dedication to volunteering their time to bring you “Our New Neighbors” each month. Listen to “Our New Neighbors” live or on-demand at www.wcny.org/communityfm.

From Wheelchair Bound to Weightlifting Champion Imagine being fairly healthy—you eat well, you exercise. You are living your life and things are going pretty well. Then, out of the blue, you have a wake-up call. Kim Rahir, a recent guest on “Zestful Aging Podcast,” had such a wake-up call. She tells the story of being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, bound to a wheelchair, to recently becoming a weightlifting champion. Kim was a middle-aged mother raising small kids going about her life, and even complaining about having too much on her plate. Like most of us, she took her health for granted and unconsciously felt indestructible. While caring for those around her, personal health came second, with the thought, “I’ll take care of that later.” But then, at 50, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. There was no explanation. “This is not about not eating your oatmeal in the morning,” she quips. Kim chose not to spend time trying to find answers. “I didn’t know the reason I got sick. I just had to accept it,” Kim reflected. “I had to take it as it was.” At one of her many doctor’s appointments, she asked about exercise. The doctor warned her that she should only engage in gentle exercise. “He had a knee jerk reaction,” she remembers. Kim has always had a healthy skepticism about the medical community. She firmly believes that one should advocate for themselves. She reinforces the importance of asking as many questions as you need to help you manage your illness. Always a bit rebellious, Kim decided to go back to the gym, starting slowly, to see what would happen. She was surprised to discover that light weightlifting activated her system within just a few weeks. “I knew I was on the right track.” It was vital that she built herself back up rather than make herself small by dieting. She started asking herself, “What does my body actually need?” This way of thinking was radically different from the usual diet mentality. It was easy, intuitive, and beneficial. The narrative became “how can I fuel my body?” rather than “how can I lose weight?” Her goal became focused on building and maintaining muscle. Kim notes that women are natural body-builders—we build bodies inside us. Why would we want to make ourselves small?

This new mindset became the basis for Kim’s coaching business, which helps midlife women maintain and build muscle. Adopting this positive, growth mindset has far-reaching implications as we age. Dope Food + Strong Drinks =

Great Stories T

here is some trouble cooking this month—Spatchcock Funk is coming to WCNY. Whether we're ready or not, the Spatchcock Funk crew is ready to light things up. This new program takes the typical cooking show format and cracks it wide open, with a little more spice, some cheeky jokes, and an open invitation to anyone looking to spice things up in the kitchen (or anywhere else).

The show has two co-founders, Alex DeRosa, the director and visionary, and Matt Read, the host and chef, and an entire crew that shows up at the parties in each episode. Each week, the Spatchcock Funk squad will show you how to throw a party without any special reason. All you need are some people you love and you're off to the races. Alex said, "The idea is simple—you bring your friends, we bring everything else." Tune in and meet Nick, April, Stephanie, and a whole lot of fun characters you can't help but want to party with.

We caught up with Matt and Alex over a few beers to learn more about the show. Both come from creative fields, having worked at advertising agencies developing national campaigns. Additionally, they have been producing a cooking segment airing on local television. They have a unique take on throwing parties and want to personally invite you into the mix. This season, they're telling stories that are built on a foundation of live music, handcrafted cocktails, the blues, and the most important ingredient of all— great friends. Alex explains it this way, "Food, drinks, and get togethers are a universal cultural love language— we use it to show our respect and appreciation for others. We want the audience to feel that too." The team uses recipes as the brush and backdrop of parties and friends as a canvas for authentic storytelling. "Dope Food + Strong Drinks = Great Stories. It's in our tagline, so it's gotta be true," laughs Matt. Every episode is focused on a great way to squeeze the most out of life and incorporates an important message about caring for ourselves and others. One episode, revealing how to throw a party on a boat, touches on body and sex positivity, while another, highlighting a poker night, encourages viewers to utilize regular social interaction to care for their mental health. "We want the parties to feel exclusive for the fun, but totally inclusive for the audience," explains Matt.

40 CONNECT MAGAZINE MARCH/APRIL 2024

While there are plenty of cocktails and innuendo in each episode, companion content including full recipes, mocktails, and podcasts can be found to help viewers expand their horizons (and troublemaking). In addition to food, cocktails, and party ideas, the show contains Easter eggs too—and unique nods to pop culture, music, and the greater good. Even the outfits have something different, according to Alex. "Matt's T-shirts throughout Season 1 represent different forms of art and culture that we love. We try to make sure viewers get as much authentic personality as possible."

Sharpen your knives, get your crew together, and jump into the party, starting Tuesday, March 26 at 9 p.m. on WCNY-TV.

Who the Funk Are We?

Our content, parties, and style might feel exclusive, but everything we do is 100% inclusive. We love the beautiful disaster that food, art, and culture brings—a collision of different styles, viewpoints, and flavors. Smashed together, it creates a symphony of destruction that knocks down any walls that stand in the way of throwing good times for good people. Point blank: if you love people and love yourself, we love ya’ll too. Before we were on TV, social media, or the menus at some cool joints, we were drunk on a boat. We pondered the big questions in life, like MFK, who makes the best fried chicken, and how can we get paid to just party? We’re two buddies who have thrown some pretty great parties and love hanging out with our friends. After a while, we threatened to start a cooking show and eventually fired it up.

Spatchcock Funk has created recipes that have appeared at restaurants across the area, including Funk n' Waffles and Ale 'n' Angus Pub.

The team developed custom libations that will appear in the Tito's Vodka 25th Anniversary Cocktail Recipe Book.

Spring into the Season with New Releases on

From brand-new series to new episodes of your favorite shows, WCNY Passport has it all! Riveting dramas, sensational romances, and more are making their way to members!

Call the Midwife, Season 13 It is now 1969 and more babies are being born in hospitals than ever before. Pressure on maternity beds remains extremely high across the country, but Poplar is coping better than most due to the work of Nonnatus House and the popularity of home births under the auspices of the Sisters. Available Sunday, March 17 on Passport.

Nolly on MASTERPIECE Helena Bonham Carter stars in “Nolly.” “Nolly” reveals the story of Noele “Nolly” Gordon, one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and 70s, whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. All three episodes will be available starting Sunday, March 17 on Passport.

Alice & Jack on MASTERPIECE Alice & Jack is a love story for the ages. When Alice and Jack first meet, they’re bound by a connection so powerful it seems nothing can break it, but will their path lead them to a place of happiness and togetherness? Or will life and their own emotional complexities get in the way? Honest, intimate, and surprisingly funny, the series shows love in all its unexpected, technicolor, kaleidoscopic beauty. All six episodes will be available starting Sunday, March 17 on Passport.

Independent Lens: One with the Whale For St. Lawrence islanders in the Bering Sea, whale hunting is vital for survival. This narrative highlights their fight against cultural genocide and environmental injustice as they seek to reclaim their heritage in today’s world. Available Monday, April 22 on Passport.
