Single-Port Robotic Surgery: EXPERIENCE MATTERS

As the region’s leader in robotic-assisted surgery Crouse Health is the only area hospital to offer the latest, minimally invasive technique for prostate surgery using a single, small incision. The da Vinci SP system uses advanced technology designed for access to tissue in the body with greater precision and enhanced mobility.

A pioneer in robotic-assisted surgery, urologist Po Lam, MD, is the first and only surgeon in the region to utilize the da Vinci Single Port robotic system for prostate removal. His experience with the SP system places him in the top tier* of robotic surgeons in the U.S. using this innovative technology.

President's Letter

When I recently visited Pearl’s, a local bistro in Cazenovia, to thank the proprietor for supporting WCNY with a community business spot on TV, he told me how pleased he was with the production support the station had provided to create the video used onair for the restaurant.

His is not the only small business, non-profit, community organization, or regional school that WCNY shares its technology and talent with to help strengthen partnerships across Central New York and the Mohawk Valley.

A lot of that work is done behind the scenes by our video production group.

You know our video production team from the shows they bring to air—the camerawork on “Ivory Tower,” editing on the “World of Adaptive Sports,” and dressing of the sets for “Cycle of Health” and “Behind the Woman.” They provide the mobile studio for “Honor Flight,” and handle the field work for “Community Connect” and “Classic FM Music Educator Award” features. They coordinate logistics to schedule interviews for “On the Money,” closed captioning for “Spatchcock Funk,” sound engineering for “The Reading League’s Reading Buddies,” guest booking for “CONNECT NY,” and segments for “Jobs Explained” and our YouTube channel.

At the station, we also know them for their dedication, dependability, attention to detail, and high standards. Their teamwork, flexibility, and tireless collaboration are essential to producing the creative, compassionate, quality programming you expect from WCNY. We recognize them for the lighting and directing, cabling, and ingest that go into every show. They are the backbone of our organization.

Who are they? They are a tight-knit group of producers, associate producers, engineers, and production assistants led by Senior Director Doug Moreau, Studio Supervisor Tanner Pechin, and multi-talented Editor Eric Hayden. In this month’s letter, I want to recognize Alec Ambruso, Jenna Fields, Hannah Gonzalez, Ryan Hill, Bruce Jans, Josh Patch, Colby Perrigo, Amelia Ponirakis, Holly Reilly, Sharlene Richards, Kaytlyn Slaboc, Francis Tavino, Wendy Wang, John Ward, Elyse Whalen, David White, and Rubin Wright. Together, they deliver a range, depth, and scope of content rare for a station of our size.

Our hosts, guests, and panelists—even the puppets that help teach kids how to read—are among the best in the PBS universe, but they are dependent on that production crew for how well they appear on your monitors and screens.

It is with your support that we have such talented people bringing to life the stories that illustrate the passion and promise of the people and places in our coverage area.

For them—and for each of you—we are grateful.

Make a Tropical Fruit Fiesta Salad!

Your child and their party guests will love this tasty snack featuring tropical fruits. This fun fiesta salad may encourage some children to try out new fruit flavors and combinations.

Materials

• An assortment of tropical fruits including pineapple, mango, papaya, kiwi, dragon fruit, starfruit, and shredded coconut.

• Knife

• Cups or small bowls

• Forks

• Cutting board

Directions

1. Gather your tropical fruits and rinse off the exteriors to remove any debris.

2. Begin by carefully slicing your tropical fruits into bite-sized pieces. A sharp knife is best to cut through some of the tougher fruits like pineapples, so this step should be completed by an adult.

3. If you’re preparing your tropical fruit salad for a party, fill individual cups with a mixture of the various fruits. If you’re preparing it to enjoy over a few days with your family, simply place the salad in an airtight bowl and store in the refrigerator.

4. Serve the tropical fruit salad to party guests or friends and family.

Liner Notes

Your friends at WCNY Radio have been very excited about this issue of CONNECT Magazine because we have a lot of great news to share with you! First and foremost, a very sincere thanks to all of you who stepped-up to contribute to Classic FM and our other radio stations during June’s two-day fundraiser. It was a very successful effort, and all of your support means we can continue to bring you the kinds of programming and other enhancements we’ll talk more about below!

On Classic FM, we’ve created a new segment called “Backstage Pass,” where Diane Jones takes you inside the regional classical music scene with in-depth interviews, performances by visiting artists, the latest information on upcoming musical events, and much more. “Backstage Pass” is heard on selected weekdays at noon, and each segment is posted at wcny.org/radio.

Also on Classic FM, every Saturday at 11 p.m. starting Thursday, July 4, we bring you “Tomorrow’s Choices Today.” This is four separate programs that rotate weekly, all designed to keep you on top of the very latest in new classical music being composed and performed. Listen for “A Curious Ear” with Classic FM host and local composer Chris Cresswell, “Fresh Ink” from the Society for New Music, “Beyond the Barrier,” and “Living American Composers.”

On Community FM, we are excited that we are now providing fans of three popular, legacy Classic FM music shows another opportunity to listen.

“Ciao!” with Joey Nigro and Jim Battaglia continues to air on Classic FM Sundays at noon. Additionally, it can now be heard on Sundays at 5 p.m. on Community FM, WCNY HD-3. Similarly, you can now listen to “Bill Knowlton’s Bluegrass Ramble” from 6-9 p.m. on Community FM, three hours before it airs at 9 p.m. on Classic FM. And you now have two chances to hear our weekly encore of “Sounds of Jazz with Leo Rayhill” at 1 p.m. on Classic FM and 9 p.m. on Community FM.

Remember, it’s easy to live stream Community FM on your computer or smartphone. Just go to wcny.org/radio and you’ll find a link.

Also new to Community FM this summer, four new local shows:

• Firebarn Chats, a radio spinoff from the popular Strathmore Speakers Series

• The ARISE Podcast, from the local non-profit dedicated to access and independence for all

• D.O.T. P.O.D., the podcast produced by the New York State Department of Transportation

• The Joy of Why, a podcast about curiosity and the quest for knowledge, hosted by mathematician and Cornell University Professor Steven Strogatz

See the program schedule in this and every issue of CONNECT Magazine for airtimes. But now you can also listen to our original local programs on-demand, on these podcast platforms: Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Spotify, and TuneIn.

Finally for now, a couple reminders:

Make a date to join us on Sunday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at beautiful Little York Lake in Cortland County for the 51st Bluegrass Ramble Picnic. Come enjoy a full day of great American music. Meet the one and only “Mr. Bluegrass” Bill Knowlton and many of us from the Classic FM team.

And… it’s summertime, so that means it’s again time for you to help shape our radio playlist by casting your vote for our Top 40 classical music pieces of all time. Take a look at the ballot on page 36, then go to wcny.org/radio/top-40 to choose YOUR Top 40 favorites. Cast your votes throughout the months of July and August. We will tally the votes, publish the Top 40 favorites online, and will then count down those pieces for you live during “Classic Choices” starting Labor Day morning. It’s your chance to have a direct say in the great classical music you hear on Classic FM!

As always, thank you for your support, and thank you for listening to our WCNY radio stations!

Congratulations to David Lombardo

Congratulations to David Lombardo, host of WCNY’s “The Capitol Pressroom,” who won three awards in the 2024 Syracuse Press Club competition on May 4, 2024.

Yes, She’s a Death Doula Celebrity

When Gayle King is holding your podcast guest’s new book on her social media, you know it has found its way into Oprah’s hands. Alua Arthur is a death doula and a New York Times best-selling author with her new book, “Briefly Perfectly Human.” I had the opportunity to speak with her several years ago on the “Zestful Aging Podcast.” Her message is clearly resonating with many, so I rebroadcast her episode this past June. Alua is a thoughtful and passionate advocate for facing our deaths head-on.

Alua gets right to the point: thinking and planning for our death makes our life richer. When we remind ourselves that time is precious and that this party has an end, we live in a more intentional way. Scrolling our Facebook feed is not just a time suck—it’s a waste of a dear and limited resource. We become more choosy about who we spend our time with. We use the fancy china and wear the brand-new shoes. Alua says that we all make the same mistake: we think we have time. She quipped that even though she thinks about death more than most of us, she’s still surprised to see gray hairs when she looks in the mirror.

Our society doesn’t promote conversations about death. We like to pretend that if we drink enough kale smoothies, we might live forever. Last month, I attended a Death Cafe in Cazenovia (fun fact: I interviewed the founders of the Death Cafe years ago!). It’s a place to talk about death with no judgment or agenda. You might think it would be depressing, but on the contrary, it was liberating.

It’s worth considering how your life may improve by considering your death. To learn more about Alua Arthur, visit GoingwithGrace.com. Listen to the “Zestful Aging Podcast” Live or On-Demand at

Help Drive Our Mission Foward!

WCNY, in partnership with Vehicles for Charity, offers the opportunity to support our quality entertainment through a unique form of giving: vehicle donation. We invite our generous supporters to transform their unwanted cars, trucks, motorcycles, or boats into valuable funding that will help sustain the enriching programs and services that thousands rely on.

Donating a vehicle is a simple and meaningful way to contribute to WCNY’s mission. With a tollfree call to 1.877.308.2408, donors can arrange for the pickup of their vehicle at no cost to them and potentially qualify for a tax deduction. WCNY ensures that every donation is maximized to support its educational initiatives, diverse programming, and community engagement efforts.

Support from vehicle donations play a crucial role in maintaining WCNY’s legacy as a trusted resource for news, educational outreach, and storytelling. The process is simple, the impact is immediate, and the gratitude of the countless individuals who benefit from WCNY’s programs is immeasurable.

Donors seeking more information about the vehicle donation process or the impact of their gift are encouraged to reach out to Katherine Keeney at 315.551.6838 or visit our website at wcny.org.

Thank You to Wendy Harris!

WCNY is honored to announce the acquisition of an exquisite piece of art titled, “Field Rhythm,” graciously donated by esteemed local artist Wendy Harris. This stunning landscape piece now adorns the wall of our main conference room, enriching the space with its vibrant presence.

In a sweeping gesture of support, Wendy gifted artwork to 26 nonprofit organizations across Central New York. Her philanthropic initiative celebrates these organizations’ unwavering dedication to serving people and conserving the natural environment in the region. WCNY is honored to be among the distinguished recipients of her generosity and is deeply moved by her commitment to using her art as a conduit for appreciation and community engagement.

Shannon Hanrahan, VP of Philanthropy, recalls her first encounter with Wendy back in 2017.

Wendy embodies the spirit of philanthropy. She always has. When I started working for WCNY, she was one of the first members I spoke to. She called to make a donation, and when I asked her why she was choosing to increase her giving, she told me, When you love something, you want to keep it safe.’ I wrote it on a sticky note and kept it at my desk for years. When I look at ‘Field Rhythm,’ I see the beauty of our region—the gorgeous diversity of our landscapes, histories, communities, and stories. And I see the beautiful future before us when we work together to keep safe the things we love.”

This donation underscores the symbiotic relationship between the arts and civic engagement, reminding us that together we can create a more beautiful and connected community.

August is Make-AWill Month

August is national “Make-A-Will Month,” a dedicated time to encourage supporters and the community at large to consider estate planning and the powerful impact of legacy giving.

Throughout August, WCNY is committed to raising awareness about the importance of having a will and how planned gifts can ensure the sustainability of quality programming and educational initiatives for future generations. This month-long campaign aims to inspire individuals to create a lasting legacy that aligns with their values and supports the causes they care deeply about, such as WCNY’s mission to connect with and give back to the community.

Ensuring that your affairs are in order not only provides peace of mind but also allows you to make a significant impact on the organizations you are passionate about. A planned gift to WCNY is more than a donation—it’s an investment in the future of public broadcasting and the enrichment of our community. By taking the time to make a will, supporters can ensure that their legacy continues to educate, entertain, and inspire for years to come.

At WCNY, we witness every day the difference that public broadcasting makes in the lives of our viewers and listeners. When our supporters include WCNY in their estate planning, they help secure the future of independent media and contribute to a lasting legacy that will benefit Central New Yorkers for generations. This August, make a will and make a difference with WCNY.

For more information about making a will and the impact of your legacy gift, please contact Katherine Keeney at 315.551.6838 or visit wcny.org.
