The State of the Nation will be held on Monday evening, September 29 . It is the end of season opportunity to hear about the Club’s performance and some of the initiatives planned for the 2015 year. We are aware that improving communications is important to members and relying on written information and email has its limitations. The State of the Nation is another vehicle for sharing information and a platform to allow members to raise questions of interest. All members are encouraged to attend.

We were all surprised to learn that Mike Kupchanko had announced his departure from the Club after more than 7 years of service. It is understandable when good managers want a change in their careers and a change from the demands of Club life. Even so, Mike will be missed and his contributions in maintaining the course to a high standard are much appreciated. The bar is set high for his successor!

The season is drawing to a close and every day of good weather is a gift that allows one more round to be played! Notwithstanding having more than our fair share of rain this year, management has managed to pull a very good year out of the proverbial magician’s hat! Greg and his team should be congratulated. There were many days when he was heard to say the year was coming together as “the perfect storm”! th

It is our intention that in the 2015 season members will notice some significant changes not the least of which will be the new course routing, new entrance lighting which is currently being installed and on-going course improvements to 6 and 14 greens and the 17th fairway. Many other things are planned and management will have a very busy off-season planning and preparing. The more members support Club events, the more profit the Club will have to reinvest in ongoing improvements. In closing, many thanks to all the staff of the Wascana who worked so hard to make the member experience a positive one. Thanks also to members who took the time to participate in focus groups and who have taken the time to call or email me with questions, comments, or compliments. I can always be reached at jwightman@vpci.ca or 306-751-0581.

General Manager’s Report .

Fall Course Improvements 14 Green The 14th green has now been renovated and sod utilising turf from our current 4th hole. We anticipate playing this green in the late spring of next year.

6 Green The front of 6 green has now been regraded to allow for water to better exit the green rather than backup and thus create excessive turf damage.

12 Drainage piping The drainage pipe that controls a vast majority of water flowing from the southeast side of the golf course has been repaired.

Page 5

General Manager’s Report Fall Course Improvements Continued... 17 Fairway At time of writing we anticipate that we will have time to complete a new drain line running in the north rough parallel to the fairway from the red tee to the ditch. A series of catch basins are to be added to assist with drainage. 10 Green Again at time of writing we anticipate we will have time to repair the drainage problem on the front of the green which will allow water to better exit the green rather than backup and thus create excessive turf damage.

Entrance Lighting The piles have been installed and wiring is underway. The posts and lamps are on order and we expect delivery and set-up in late October A Final Word I am pleased to report that all these noted improvements are being funded through regular club funds. Although, until most recently we have witnessed one of the coolest and wettest springs and summers on record, our current financial forecasts are projecting to be not far off the budget at years end. Finally we thank all members for your patience and understanding while this most important work is completed. Greg N. Dukart, General Manager/Chief Operating Officer

History Notes The Wascana’s Planning Process - Past & Present

Photos of the 1960’s Clubhouse and Current Clubhouse As will be noted from the photos displayed above, the Wascana has come a long way in its 103 year history. Until 2009, long range planning and development of the planning process was done on an ad hoc basis. In 2009, the Wascana developed a strategic planning process, which includes, a desired future state of the Club, a vision statement and a mission statement. Financial forecasts are now being made through 2020. Full details are available on the Wascana website by clicking on Communications, then Reports and Meetings and then 2014 Annual General Meeting. In addition to this, the Wascana and the Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon, for the last 8 or 9 years have been holding an annual interclub get together which includes a comprehensive discussion of common problems such as membership and membership categories, course conditions, service and tipping and food and beverage matters. Common problems are discussed and many innovative ideas are brought forward during these meetings. Last but not least, this year there have been a series of focus groups to obtain members’ input into the issues facing the Wascana. Members are reminded that the general meeting to discuss the “State of the Nation” will be held at the Wascana on Monday, September 29th at 7:00pm and all are encouraged to attend. It is respectfully submitted that the planning process at the Wascana is far superior to what it used to be and will stand the Club in good stead for the future. Al MacLean

'Mark Lang of KMPG awards a prize to a delighted Don Punga at the final Mixed League Golf Event ' "Our fifth and Ultimate Wascana Mixed League Event was held Sept 11th. There was a slight chill in the air just to remind us of the upcoming change in seasons. Golf results didn't suffer as many golfer posted scores which garnered prizes for both skill or darned good luck. Our cordial Sponsor, Mark Lang of KMPG, served as our celebrity presenter of prizes. He was kept busy visiting most every table as KPMG and the Committee were able to enhance the prize table for the Finale. The Committee is very grateful for the great support afforded us by the Management and Staff of the Food and Beverage Department and most importantly, the golfers who chose to enjoy the sport and social aspects of the The Wascana Mixed Golf League" Submitted by, The Mixed League Committee

Message from the Wascana Women While we were in Scotland this summer, I had the great pleasure of golfing with one of my all-time idols Steve Podborski. Among some of Steve’s achievements are eight World Cup Downhill Championships, two Olympic medals, the Order of Canada, and Chef de Mission for the Canadian Olympic Team at the Sochi Olympics. As we were golfing, I lamented the fact that when Brad and I were first married, he agreed to take up skiing, and I agreed to learn to golf. In the subsequent years, we have golfed hundreds of times and in place all around the world, however have skied only a handful of times. Steve’s response was simple yet profound, “the number one reason people quit skiing is marriage”. I expect a similar statement can be made about golf as there are many similarities between the sports: Both are time intensive Both can be difficult to learn proficiently as an adult Both have seen rapid technological equipment advances Both can be expensive sports for families As families make decisions regarding the use of not only their disposable incomes but their available recreational times, golf has become an option that is difficult to maintain. According to Lee Phillip McGinnis and James W. Gentry in a study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine, Getting Past the Red Tees: Constraints Women Face in Golf and Strategies to Help Them Stay “The golf industry is currently undergoing a “churning effect” whereby players are leaving nearly as quickly as they enter; this effect is especially prevalent among women”. Some of the issues facing women are lack of confidence, difficulty finding playing partners, family obligations, lack of knowledge, difficulty with other golfers and time commitment. These issues can be particularly profound for young mothers who tend to be the primary caregiver of children. Equally challenging is to young professional women who are first starting their career, and may have to justify time away from the office or practice area to spend “recreational” time on the golf course. For your convenience, I have attached the URL if you wish to read the entire study: http://journals.humankinetics.com/AcuCustom/Sitename/Documents/DocumentItem/5659.pdf The Strategic Plan adopted by the Board of Directors for the Wascana Country Club acknowledges that women and families are priority demographics for the future of the Club. Women who are actively engaged in golf, encourage their spouses and children, and eventually their grandchildren, to play and enjoy this sport as well as other features of the Wascana including golf lessons, the Pro-Shop and the food and beverage outlets.

Message from the Wascana Women As the Wascana Country Club closes out the 2014 golf season, the Board must consider how to make our club more attractive to women and families, what concessions and attributes would appeal to these demographics at the Wascana, and how the needs of women and families are different from the needs of male golfers. I would encourage each of you to contact the Board directly so that your voice can be heard about the future of Wascana, especially those of you who were not selected to participate in a Board-driven focus group. Please let them know what you would like to see, and what can be done to make the Wascana a more enjoyable experience for you and your family. At the end of the day, marriage does not have to end participation in golf; golf merely has to be more women and family focused. After all – happy wife, happy life. Michelle, Women’s President Michelle Hunter – dmhunter@sasktel.net Wascana 9 Hole Ladies Co-Captains: Sylvia Fiske & Linda Huber Business Women Mark your calendars and plan on attending our End-of-the-Season wind-up party on Tuesday, October 7th, in the Fireside Lounge at 6:30pm.
