President’s Message

June 2014

It has been a slow spring but it seems that we finally have an indication that summer will indeed arrive in Hours of Operation Regina! The opening of the course was not without its disruption as the greens on holes #14 & #15 were damaged during the winter. Management responded very appropriately with action to repair these greens Committees and given the recent warm weather it is hopeful that these greens will be back to a playable state very soon. Staff Directory The closures of these greens raised the issue of playing on temporary greens. There can be good reasons for using temporary greens but in recent discussions members of the board and management agreed that if the Club is going to continue to spend significant capital maintaining the extra holes that the Club is lucky enough to have, they should be put into play when regular greens are closed. There are 3 options when considering playability of a hole. Open, closed or open with course modifications. If conditions require modifications, management and the board agree that fundamentally, those modifications should respect the Club’s vision of “premier country club experience, with optimal playing surfaces”. In the future, Club management will strive to make use of extra maintained greens whenever greens on regular holes are not playable. On another topic, the board very recently agreed unanimously with management’s recommendation to do something about our less than stellar parking lot. Members have been vocal in their disappointment over the course of the asphalt in the parking lot but also about the lack of sufficient spaces. The General Manager sought quotations on recapping the existing parking lot and adding a new parking area east of the driving range. The successful supplier will provide a total of 3 years warranty and spot treatment repairs and believes that provided heavy truck traffic is kept to a minimum, the recapping will last a minimum of 3 years and possibly up to 8. This work is scheduled for completion in June (subject to weather and any member/guest activities) and will increase our paved parking spaces from 94 to 198. We realize that the asphalt will require annual maintenance – this is Saskatchewan! The freeze/thaw will cause cracks and shifting but the supplier with which we have contracted has proven its reliability and responsiveness to maintenance needs. It is the intent to minimize disruption as much as possible but knowing that some disruption will exist, your patience will be most appreciated. It is my hope that you have noticed positive changes in the service provided in the Spike by a group of new and very enthusiastic young serving staff! Please remember to tip for good service – it will reinforce the standard of service that members want to receive. As well, it has been a pleasure to interact with the ProShop staff who are as helpful and attentive as they were last year. Staff in the Banquets group are off to a great start and have a busy calendar for the season ahead. Greg and his team have been very responsive to member feedback and it shows in the changes they have made. Please feel free to contact me by email (jwightman@vpci.ca) or phone (306-751-0581) if you have any questions, concerns or feedback. It is my pleasure to serve as the President of The Wascana and your feedback is most appreciated.

Green Core Aeration - Monday, June 2nd

Please note the golf course will be closed on Monday June 2nd, 2014 for the rescheduled spring greens aeration. Although the turf quality of the greens continues to improve the USGA have recommended an aggressive schedule of aeration in order to “catch up.” According to the USGA, a black layer that we have encountered approximately half inch to one inch below the surface is largely due to a decision made in our past to reduce the number of yearly core aerations. The lack of regular aeration has largely contributed to a black layer in the root zone, which is the resulting look of an unwanted build-up of organic matter that lacks hydrogen and oxygen. As water cannot easily penetrate this build-up of organic matter, it sits on or near the surface and results in “spongy” and/or “foot printing” conditions are prominent. Having said that, we are lead to believe that a higher than wanted level of sulphur may have played some role as well. The photo above is from the middle of #12 last September and displays the black layer in the greens. The cores are removed from the greens and replaced by sand. However each aeration only disturbs approximately 7.7 % of the green. As per the USGA report, more frequent aeration, venting, top dressing and verti-cutting will allow the greens to return to a more consistent level in due course. The complete USGA report is available at www.wascanacountryclub.com on the Reports & Meetings page under the Communications menu option. We thank all members for their patience and understanding.

Parking Lot Asphalting

Please note the existing parking lot will receive an asphalt recapping commencing on Monday, June 2nd. Additionally a new paved parking area will be created behind the practice fairway. Subject to weather the two areas should be completed by Saturday, June 7th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Holes #14 & 15 Both greens have been aerated, verti-cut, over-seeded, and fertilized. Unfortunately, the unseasonably low temperatures and extremely cool weather earlier this month has prohibited quick germination and recovery. The greens were again reviewed this morning and we are now just starting to see some germination and recovery. It is our intention to have another review of these greens the first week of June. We want to thank all of our members for their patience and understanding during this time.

A Message from the Club Historian

As chronicled by Julie Folk in Wascana at 100, when the Wascana Country Club Hall of Fame was introduced in 2010, one of the four inductees was Marg Elliott. Her accomplishments were astonishing. Her father, Alexander Esson was her mentor (and a good deal of the time in her early years her caddy). He built a small sand green course near their farm and later when the family moved to Rosetown, the 9 hole course was sand greens. The first time she played on grass greens was in 1936 at the Saskatchewan Women's Amateur Golf Championship which she won. She was then 15 years of age. Her clubs then consisted of a driver, a mashie, a seven iron and a putter. She was the youngest female player to ever win a provincial championship at the time. After this win in 1936 she went on to the Canadian Amateur Championship the next year, becoming the youngest female to reach the quarterfinals. The next year she went one step further, beating the British and Scottish champion, Nan Baird before losing in the semi-final. The Second World War suspended her career and after the war, she and husband Bill began raising a family. When she returned to competitive golf she continued her winning ways. She won the Regina Ladies Championship, the Waskesiu Ladies Lobstick Championship six times and the Wascana Ladies Championship a record nine times. At one time she held the lowest handicap of any woman in Canada. She won major golf titles in six different decades. Once she retired from the game, she gave back to it. She was extremely supportive of golf in Saskatchewan and made generous financial contributions to local golf generally and in particular to the Wascana. It is submitted that to this point in our over 100 year history, she was the finest lady golfer to play at the Wascana. -Al MacLean

Message from the Women of the Wascana I would like to pay tribute to two women who made outstanding contributions to women’s golf in Regina, Jean Owen and Joanne Goulet. Jeannie passed away peacefully on May 5, 2014. Jeannie was a long standing member of the Wascana Country Club, and served as Women’s President . As a young woman, Jeannie competed professionally as a skater with her twin sister Joan. They were Western Canadian Pairs champions from 1947-49, and toured North America in various ice skating shows. She also taught figure skating in cities across Canada. She was also the founding "Granny" of the annual "Grannies Tournament" at the Wascana. Joanne Goulet passed away on May 17, 2014. Joanne began golfing at age 14, and won many local, national and international championships. Among other honours, Joanne won the Regina Women’s Golf Title 32 times, was a two-time Saskatchewan Junior Women’s Chaperon, and nine-time Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s champion and a six-time Saskatchewan Senior Women’s champion. She holds course records at the Royal Regina Golf Club, the Wascana Country Club, and the Riverside Country Club. In 1993, she became the first woman in Canada to have a golf course named in her honour: the Joanne Goulet Golf Course in Regina. She was installed in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. Women’s Golf in Saskatchewan is far richer for the contributions of these two fine women. ♦♦♦♦♦ The Women’s Opening Dinner was held on Wednesday May 7th. Almost100 Wascana Women attended this annual event that launches the golfing season. Chef presented a beautiful meal that was enjoyed by all, and Leah did a wonderful job of setting the Dining Room. Thanks to the staff for the great food and service, and to everyone who attended. ♦♦♦♦♦ I understand there have been some issues regarding Saturday afternoon sign-up sheets. The sign-up sheets are in the All Women’s binder in the Communications Hub in the Women’s Locker Room. The Pro-Shop will collect the sign-up sheets and assign tee times as they do with all others. As noted before, all women members of the Wascana are welcome and encouraged to golf on Saturday afternoons. Michelle Women’s President: Michelle Hunter – dmhunter@sasktel.net

Mixed League Twenty six couples assembled at 5pm on May 22nd and ventured out into an afternoon of fine weather, save a mosquito or two, and enjoyed nine holes of friendly golf. The rendezvous following the matches featured some social time and a wonderful buffet. Our golfers were also chosen to sample two wines - a red, an organic Trapiche Malbec and a fine Pinot Grigio from the Copper Moon folks resulting in accolades for both. On behalf of the Mixed golfers we would like mention our appreciation for the effort Chef Rod, Leah Christie, Grady Shuett and their teams put into the veritable flavour festival for the golfers. Do note the Mixed League is open to all shareholders and guests and those wishing to join the next Mixed should jot down June 12th. We will be enjoying some additional largesse that day from Jim Werschler and Boston Pizza. While you are at your calendar mark down July 17th - it will be a 'double sport night'! Naturally, any questions about the League can be sent to wascana.mixed@gmail.com -Wascana Mixed Golf League Committee
