President’s Message In my first report as President of the Wascana Country Club I want to express my thanks to John Aitken for his service both on the board as a director and for the last year as President. He brought a level of diligence to the financial analysis of the Club’s profitability that will serve as a foundation for reporting to the membership on a go-forward basis. At a Board of Directors meeting following the AGM three new directors were welcomed: Rich Michell and Michael Tochor were appointed for a 3 year term, Mike O’Brien was appointed earlier to fill the final remaining year of a director who resigned and Tafaline Wall was reappointed for a final 3 year term. We have a full slate of 9 enthusiastic and well qualified directors who are committed to attending board meetings, participating actively and making decisions in the best interest of the Club. The directors represent a wide variety of the Club’s demographic: senior, young professionals, women, high handicappers, low handicappers, members who have been with the Club for a relatively short time and those who have been with the Club for many years. Joining me as Officers of the Club are Bob Walker as Vice-President, Ed Meredith continuing in the role as Treasurer and Robert Haynes continuing in the role of Secretary. I would like to thank these individuals for agreeing to serve in these important roles. I look forward to working with the Board to assist our General Manager, Greg Dukart, and his team continue the high standards that exist at the Club and to make improvements in areas where needed. As such the following represents the key areas of focus for the upcoming year:  Policy Framework: Continue improving member policies to eliminate inconsistencies and unintended inequitable situations and to provide management with clear decision-making parameters.  Inside the Ropes: Build upon the work done in the past to ensure that our course and grounds are maintained in a manner that balances two goals: course conditions and playability during our short season.  Strategic Plan-Phase 2: Continuation of the ongoing improvements to the course (bunkers, Spike/casual dining, holes 3-4-17 deferred from 2013, parking lot, etc.)  Long Term Strategic Planning: Define specific activities to support the 4 key objectives: private club golf experience; optimize existing facilities; 12 month programs and services; and membership growth. The membership should see alignment between new initiatives at the Club and these four objectives. One decision the Board very carefully considered and approved at the AGM was the elimination of the ex-officio appointment of the Ladies President to the Board of Directors.

President’s Message Continued It is our collective view that the Club has evolved to the point where women are, and will continue to be, represented on the Board as equals with our male counterparts for full 3 year terms. Much has been done in the past couple of years, and some changes remain to be made, to ensure that men and women enjoy an equitable golf experience. Simply put: allowing one group to have a guaranteed ex-officio spot on the board no longer makes sense. In the future, the Nominations Committee will be asked to identify potential directors who represent both genders, all age demographics and the key skills required of directors. Notwithstanding this change, if there are issues to be dealt with specifically for the Ladies groups (tournaments, events, etc.) Greg and/or I will be available to meet with the Ladies’ representatives at any time to review and resolve issues that may arise much in the same way that the men’s groups handle their golf needs. This decision is one that recognizes our progress as a Club and was made in discussion and with the support of many women members and the Ladies’ representative on the board. However, there may be members who do not fully understand the reasons behind the decision and if this is the case, those individuals are encouraged to call or email me at any time. Thanks go to Michelle Hunter, Danica Love, Shirley Patterson and all the Ladies Presidents before them who worked with the Board and helped move the Club along to the point where any member can participate on a full and equal basis at the Board table. I will end this report with one last note. Many changes are being made in the Spike and one of the most important ones is the introduction of voluntary tipping. Our past practice of mandatory tipping was not sufficient to retain our staff and as a result we trained many good servers who went to local restaurants where they could end their day with “cash in their jeans”. Waiters and waitresses who provide exemplary service should be rewarded and encouraged to keep it up. Your tips will send that message! I look forward to the challenges ahead and hope to meet many of you. Please feel free to contact me by email (jwightman@vpci.ca) or phone (306-751-0581) if you have any questions, concerns or feedback.

Page 12 Championship Week 2014 Power Cart Policy

All of the power carts are equipped with GPS monitors to provide a more enjoyable and efficient round of golf. All power carts must be signed out in the Golf Shop prior to your round of golf. Power Cart Rules:  All power carts must be kept at least 30 feet away from greens and tees at all times  Power carts may leave the cart path once passed the green post and must return to the cart path before the red post.  Only members and guests with a valid driver’s license are permitted to rent or drive power carts.  Maximum of two players per cart  Individuals will be held responsible for any damage they have caused to their power cart Action Zones: For your safety and the wellbeing of the golf course “Action Zones” have been created throughout the property where travel by power cart has been deemed unsafe or a risk of damage to the turf is probable. We ask that you avoid these areas at all times. On any day these zones may change due to unforeseen circumstances. A list of Action Zones will be presented to the golfer before their round and it is the driver’s responsibility to be aware of these areas. If at any time a cart enters an action zone, an alarm will sound and the power cart will be automatically slowed to 7 mph. If the driver continues further into the Action Zone, the cart’s speed will once again be reduced to 2 mph until the cart exits the specific zone. Medical Disability Cart Pass: All approved medical disability cart pass users are required to display a medical flag. Medical flags are blue and will be issued from the Golf Shop upon receipt of the approved paperwork as provided from the Golf Course and Grounds Committee. All medical disability cart pass users must provide a doctor’s certificate in order to receive a medical flag. Cart Rule for Medical Flag Qualifiers: The medical flag issued by the club must be predominantly present on the power cart. The display of the medical flag allows other member to be aware of your medical situation and allow membership tolerance for you cart usage. For example, power carts may be driven slightly inside the normal tee and greenside accepted boundaries. However, this still does not permit a power cart to be within 10 feet of any tee, green or greenside bunker. Medical flags DO NOT grant unrestricted and uncontrolled power cart use on the golf course. Flag users are “generally” still required to obey signs and follow cart path rules. On days where the Turf Care department has requested that the cart rule remain cart path only, individuals who qualify for a medical flag may utilize the 90 degree rule with “extreme caution”. Cart Path Only: In extreme conditions, the Turf Care Department in consultation with the Head Golf Professional may determine that power carts should be kept on the paths at all times. With consultation from the Turf Care department and Head Professionals this rule may change throughout the day if conditions improve. If this occurs, each cart will be notified personally or by a message displayed on their GPS monitor.

New Additions to the Course!

Many of you may have noticed that we have a couple new employees on the golf course this year. We would like to apologize if they may have caught you by surprise. The club has purchased two coyote decoys that have been helping us with our ongoing goose problem. They have been on the hunt for two weeks now and have been proving themselves to be valuable employees. Geese that are making their way back from migration are reluctant to land anywhere near the decoys. On several occasions we have witnessed that the geese which are flying over simply won’t land anywhere near the decoys. These decoys will be moved on a regular basis to various problem areas throughout the golf course.

Message From the Women of the Wascana Welcome to the 2014 Golf Season! I proud and honoured to represent the Women Members of the Wascana Country Club. My goal this year is to encourage and support active participation of women at the Wascana. According to nancyberkley.com:  The fastest growing segment of women golfers are those between the ages of 18 and 29. They represent almost one-quarter of all female golfers.  Young female golfers golf average only about three rounds per year.  The average score of young women golfers (even when they play only a few times a year) is not much different from more mature women golfers and those who play frequently.  The average 18-hole scores range from 104 to 109. (Source: NGF)  The older the woman golfer, the more golf she plays. Female golfers over the age of 60 average about 30 rounds per year. I am always curious about why women members don’t golf or golf more frequently. When asked, I receive a number of common responses: “I am not a very good golfer”, “I don’t really have anyone to golf with”, ” I don’t have time”. As a women who didn’t take up golf until my late-30’s, I completely understand all these comments, however there are many resources available at the Wascana to help overcome all of these obstacles. Golf is ultimately about having fun, and is easy to play at the enjoyment level. It is, however, important to have realistic expectations. Relax, have fun, take a lesson or two. Everyone on the Women’s Executive will be happy and willing to play golf with you at anytime, or arrange for you to play with an appropriate partner. Please do not hesitate to contact us. And remember, you don’t have to play 18 holes. Many women play 9 or even 5. The fact that older women play lots more golf, and play at the same skill level for years, confirms that golf is a social activity for many women. Nothing beats several hours on the golf course with friends , even if you don't break 100. I encourage all Women of the Wascana, both golfers and social member, to come to the Opening Dinner on Wednesday May 7th.You can meet the Executive, and other women members, learn how Wascana living has enriched the lives of its members, and take advantage of the wonderful amenities of our club. I am looking forward to an exciting golf season. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the Women’s Executive if you have any questions or comments, or if you are looking for a golf partner!
