President’s Message

There has been a lot of activity recently at the Club and several more big events coming up! On July 10 th the Wascana hosted the 3rd Eberle & Friends Golf Tournament and contributed to the event raising $500,000 for the pediatric campaign of the Hospitals of Regina Foundation. The event was high profile and included a cast of NHL players, Mark McMorris who was the local Snowboard medalist at the Olympic Games and James Duthie, TSN Sportscaster. The course and the Club staff showed beautifully!

I would like to thank the members of the Ladies’ Executive for meeting with myself, Bob Walker, Greg Dukart and Dean Manz to discuss issues of concern. If the Club is going to remain long-term viable, it must encourage young golfers and women to be members: this is a key part of our Strategic Plan. Research shows that these categories of golfers are looking for different features in a private golf club and the most important is the ability to play golf in an environment that is respectful, fun and safe. The feedback from these women golfers was very useful to the Board and Management and will be used in future decision making about programs and tee-sheet access.

In closing, please continue to support our Club! Your ongoing support of golf operations, the pro shop, the Spike and banquets has made it possible for the Club to maintain pretty close to “on plan” financial performance even though we have had some pretty terrible weather this season. Every time you bring a guest, purchase items from the Pro Shop, dine in the Spike or book an event, you are helping to maintain the Club’s financial stability.

Later in the month Bill & Gaye Taylor hosted the annual Taylor Motors Tournament and the Club is most grateful for the ongoing support of these two members. Bill & Gaye – our thanks to you for the time and energy that went into this event and contributed to significant revenue in golf shop certificates and food & beverages for players. The Club Championship Week will begin on August 4 th and will wrap up with a Family BBQ including the Club Championship Awards and honouring of 40-50 year members on Sunday, August 9th. Hopefully everyone will be able to make it to this event. Later in the month the club will open for its Member/Guest tournament in order for existing members to introduce their guests to the Club and encourage future new membership applications. And finally, in September the 22nd Anniversary Greystone Classic for Parkinson’s Disease will be held. There are often questions about whether or not the Club should permit outside tournaments but provided they are kept to a limited number, they have been an important source of revenue and the proceeds fund the Club’s capital expenditures so that it is not necessary to raise member fees unreasonably and/or take on additional debt. It is also a great way to showcase the Club! As mentioned in the last report, Greg Dukart and I have invited a select group of individuals to attend one of three facilitated focus groups: shareholders; spouses; and graduates. Invitees have been chose to balance age/ gender/handicap/term as members and other attributes in order to ensure that we are getting a good cross section of perspectives. The feedback received at these focus groups will be considered by management and the board of directors as we seek to identify appropriate initiatives that would fit in with the Club’s Strategic Plan.

As always, please feel free to contact me by email (jwightman@vpci.ca) or phone (306-751-0581) if you have any questions, concerns or feedback. It is my pleasure to serve as the President of The Wascana and I enjoy hearing from members no matter the topic!

FYI...Blue Pipe Construction, West of Golf Course Many members have enquired as to what the construction is to the west of our property noting the excavation and pile of blue piping. We recently spoke with the contractor and SIAST is installing a new water line from the city to meet new demands as well as to replace the very old system.

History Notes HONORING OUR LONG-STANDING MEMBERS The Board of Directors of the Wascana, in conjunction with the Hall of Fame Committee, has decided to formally acknowledge those individuals who have been members of the club for over forty years. The awards will be for two categories; fifty years and over and forty years and over. These categories and the number of years they have been members are: Fifty years and over. Ross and Joyce Reibling (58) Gerry Gerrand (55) Peggy Wakeling (55) Keith Rever (54) Derry Williams (54) Marianne Rever (51)

Forty years and over. Rod Christie (49) Dr. Murray Fraser (49) Ruth Fraser (46) Ted Turner (46) Arnie Schwartz (44) Leo Ell (43) Don Hunter (43) Mel Turner (42) Dr. Mal Nattrass (42) Dr. Jack Niedermayer Gordon Brooker (41) Orville Off (41) John Ritchie (41) Wayne Steadman (41) Eleanor Gilewich (40) Gary Redhead ( 40) Gerry Welsh (40)

In preparing the list of honorees there was one mistake in the Roster and Handbook. Out of abundant caution, in the event anyone is aware of someone who should be included in these categories and is not, could you kindly advise Greg Dukart or Maija Salmon. In addition to the presentation of individual plaques to the honorees, a master board will be appropriately hung in the clubhouse in due course. The presentations will be made as part of the Club Championship Awards and Family BBQ on Sunday, August 10th. We would urge members to join in the celebrations to recognize these special members. The vast majority of these members have serve 52 in various capacities over the years including committee and volunteer work and four are past presidents. We wish to acknowledge them with sincerest thanks for their enduring support of the Wascana. Thank you again.

Finance Committee Report A summary of financial results to the end of June are as follows: June YTD Total Revenues Total Expenses Net Income (Loss)

June YTD Actual 1,099,000 1,182,000 (83,000)

Budget 1,146,000 1,263,000 (116,000)

Last Year 1,219,000 1,169,000 50,000

Revenues to date have been negatively impacted by below budget membership levels and the bad weather in May and June. Despite these factors, the overall bottom line to the end of June is better than budget due to favourable management of expenses. With operational emphasis continuing to focus on course condition and quality service, management is optimistic that now that summer has arrived we will return to the normal (or above normal) number of rounds played by members and guests over the remainder of the golf season, resulting in increased food and beverage

Shareholders’ Member Guest Friday, August 15th $500 Per Team 2 Person Best Ball 12:00PM: Arrival & Registration 1:00PM: Shotgun Start 6:30PM: Reception 7:00PM: Dinner
