President’s Message August has been a packed month at the Wascana both from a golf and governance perspective. Congratulations to our new Club Champions: Ryan McNall - Men's Champion; Kim Walker - Ladies Champion; and Ryan Gilewich - Junior Champion. It was a great and well-attended Club Championship week. This year the Club Historian, Al McLean and the Hall of Fame Committee revived the former practice of recognizing members of long-standing and presented the 30+ year members with commemorative plaques. The Club is tremendously grateful for the long-standing loyalty of its members and intends to continue the practice of recognizing those individuals for their support. At the recent Board of Directors meeting, the Board unanimously agreed to management’s recommendation to re-route the course for the 2015 playing season. You will find further details in Greg Dukart’s operational report but essentially the new routing will be as follows: Front Nine: holes 1,2,3, 4th hole will be current 17, 5th hole will be current 18, 6,7,8,9; Back Nine: holes 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17th hole will be current 16a, 18th hole will be current hole 5. This routing has been used in prior years for certain events and it is our belief that this will make for a challenging par 72 course with a much stronger finish. The obvious question is: what happens to existing hole #4? The “new” green on hole #4 which has never been brought into play will be used as a sod nursery to augment work required to improve other greens and the 4th hole will continue to be maintained as an alternate hole to be used when required. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated in three very productive focus groups. Three facilitated sessions were held with the following groups: shareholders; women members (shareholders and/or spouses); and graduates. The participants were engaged and participated actively with ideas for improvements and “aspirations” for the course. The feedback from these groups will be incorporated into the strategic planning process that is underway with the board. Although the groups had different perspectives, there were several key themes including the following: Try 6 am tee times – even if only for a day a week More mix-up shotguns for members Improve Club communications Improve use of the patio including patio heaters, fireplace and bug zappers Dedicated graduate member/guest and Ladies’ member/guest tournaments Virtual golf in off-season rather than hitting nets Bring back Nine & Dine events (all three groups) President’s Message continued on next page...

President’s Report Continued...
Explore possibility for guests at reduced costs at times when tee-sheet is not fully utilized Improve food especially on steak night Create a Ladies only Introduction to Golf program with group lessons to encourage networking Explore idea of a “family share” Improve overall access to tee sheet for non-shareholder members Improve capability for casual dining which is outside of the Spike Lounge
Management and the Board will be considering ways to incorporate some of the above ideas and many others that were raised during the Focus Groups. It will not be possible to do everything in the next season but it is the intention to incorporate as many new initiatives as possible given existing budget constraints. Finally, it is important to note that the Board agreed unanimously not to adjust the protected blocks of tee-times on Tuesdays for women members for the remainder of this season. Currently there is a morning block and an afternoon block which are significantly underutilized. However, it was also agreed that while there will be no changes this season, there will be significant changes next season and those changes will be determined in conjunction with the overall review of access to the tee sheet. It is the objective of the club to increase and encourage the participation of women members and in order to do this, it is critical that there is a protected period when only women golfers are on the course. That being said however, the Wascana is a business and must operate with the bottom line in mind. Unused tee-times are not good for business and encouraging women members must be balanced with the other key objective of maximizing tee sheet utilization. The existing policies on access to tee sheet are outdated and complicated and numerous flaws exist including when nonshareholder members can and cannot play. Prior to next season it will be revised significantly in order to improve access to the tee sheet while respecting the different rights and privileges associated with different membership categories. In closing, many thanks to all the staff of the Wascana who work so hard to make the member experience a positive one. Thanks also to many members who have taken the time to call or email me with questions, comments, or compliments. I can always be reached at jwightman@vpci.ca or 306-751-0581.

Report from the General Manager Fall Golf Course Improvements In our ongoing effort to continue to improve all playing surfaces please be advised of the following course improvements subject to weather. 14 Green reconstruction We have been unsuccessful in our efforts to re-establish turf at the front third of this green. This can be largely attributed to a significant black layer of anaerobic material near the surface. Regardless of all our efforts persistent rains washing seed away as well as a higher than normal level in Wascana Creek have complicated our work. As such we are intending to strip the green off all turf, regrade the surface, add drainage and then resod. In doing so we believe we should anticipate several years of improved green conditions. This work is scheduled to commence September 15. With a successful sodding and establishment of a healthy root system we anticipate to be playing this green again in the late spring of next year. 17 Fairway The 17 fairway from the red tee to the ditch continues to retain water after periods of heavy rains. The free standing water settles into numerous grass pockets and ultimately the turf is killed off. As such it is our intention to strip all turf, reshape and regrade as well as add several surface catch basins. ( this project will be similar to the work completed on holes 9 and 10 a few years ago) A decision on sodding or seeding the renewed area will be made nearer the time. This work is scheduled to commence once the 14 green work is completed. Again we expect this area to be back in play early in the 2015 golfing season. 6 Green Similar to the challenges at the front of the 14th green we have a similar challenge at the front of 6 green. We anticipate the removal of only a bit of turf and then a regrade and resod to restore this area. We anticipate minimal disruption and it is intended that the work is to be completed this fall. New Entrance Road Lighting Many members have enquired about the staking running parallel to our entrance road system and the 9th fairway. Largely due to safety concerns in the fall, winter and spring we are installing a series of lamp posts to provide ambient lighting when coming or leaving the Wascana. The work is scheduled for completion towards the end of October. New Golf Course Routing Planned for 2015 Season After much discussion over several years we have determined to make a subtle change to the current golf course routing commencing in 2015.
The Wascana Chronicle
Page 7
The new routing will be---Holes 1, 2, 3, then play what is currently 17 as 4, 18 as 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, for the front nine. Holes 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, then play what is currently 16a (par3) and finally currently played 5 as 18. We believe that satisfies a lot of member feedback including returning the golf course as a par 72, brings arguably one of the provinces best par threes back into play as well as provides for a more difficult series of finishing holes. As such the planned work on current hole 4 including the introduction of the new green will be deferred until reidentified as a priority in future club plans. Having said that if necessary we intend to use the existing sod on new green 4 should an important situation present itself that works into operational plans. *** STATE OF NATION MEETING Monday, September 29th, 2014 @ 7:00pm All Member Welcome Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Amongst many matters to be presented are exciting future plans for our Club. *** GRADY SCHUETT I am pleased to announce the promotion of Grady Schuett to the position of Clubhouse and Food & Beverage Manager. Should you have any food and beverage matters that you would like to discuss please do not hesitate to contact me. The crowd applauds a popular win by Andy Anderson at the August 21st Mixed Golf outing!
The Penultimate Mixed Golf competition was played in fine weather on August 21st. We were admirably hosted Milt and Wendy Walker of the Walker Group of Companies Following the fine buffet supper and a sampling of 'Rum Chata", a Caribbean rum and wholesome milk/cream adult beverage, the crowd listened in anticipation as Murray 'Condor' Westerlund supervised the evening awards distributing them based on skill and pure chance, well more precisely, random selection! The Walkers also added dug into the corporate locker and provided some exotic prizes to selected golfers. Many golfers, who realized Penultimate meant second to last, registered early for the Finale which scheduled for September 11th. We do encourage those keen joining the last round of the League's season to register quickly as we do anticipate 'selling out' the 36 spots available. Registration is open to all Club members and is a late afternoon of nine holes of golf, post game socializing, a buffet supper, and for the 11th, a much expanded prize list for the final round. The cost is $30 per person and your non-member guests can play for an additional $40. Any enquiries and to register - contact wascana.mixed@gmail.com
