Commonwealth Games Medal winner, Sarah-Jane
Perry, visits the Boat Club
SJ is the 8th top squash player in the world!
On Saturday 14 January, Sarah-Jane Perry took time out of her busy schedule to come to Warwick Boat Club and tell our juniors what it’s like to have a world-class squash career.
She answered questions like, “What do you eat before a match” and “What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had” before putting on her medals (Commonwealth Games 2022 – bronze in the women’s singles, and silver in the doubles playing with Alison Waters) and letting us take an awful lot of photos of her.
The juniors got on court with her for a little knockabout, and then they were gently persuaded to make way for some of us star-struck adults. You can see SJ putting our new captain, Paul Docherty, through his paces here. It was a fantastic afternoon. Thank you so much SJ - we love the fact that you’re such an inspiring player and a local girl as well! #SquashGirlsCan

Libby Newman, Club Captain | captain@warwickboatclub.co.uk
Hi everyone, the Club has had the usual issue with poor weather since the last magazine. However, all sport has been played whenever possible and there have been several social events successfully run by Carey. Obviously Squash has not been affected in fact we have a new Squash Captain... Paul Docherty.
The river has occasionally been too high for safe rowing and the tennis courts frozen with snow or ice. This is not the Bowling section`s outdoor season so they have not been affected. However, much has been happening behind the scenes. My Clubhouse is taking shape with Laura and Susie working hard in the office to get everything in place in time for renewals.
I believe there`s still much to be done. Your General Committee is meeting monthly, as usual making sure your Club is running efficiently. There`s still long discussions on possible new changing rooms.
Don`t forget to support your Club Cafe... come and have a hot drink or snack! I look forward to seeing you around the Club and look forward to Spring arriving!

Meet some of our newest and youngest squash players
With the Squash Stars programme proving a huge success, a group of young school friends have discovered a love of squash at Warwick Boat Club. Theo Robinson, Harry Denton, Will Sullivan and more recently, Isaac Livingstone joined the club through the Squash Stars programme. The Year 3 pupils are now regulars at JP’s junior coaching sessions on Saturday afternoons.
They particularly like Racquet Attack and bring an endless energy to the club. They often have to be ushered off the court at the end of a training session to make way for the seniors. All four boys are working hard to move up through the different ball sizes designed to aid a junior’s development.
Harry recently represented WBC at a junior competition at Priory Edgbaston where his deep serving and speed around the court earned him first place in his group.
Keep an eye on these lads – we think they’ll go far.
Squash Stars update
Around 120 young players have signed up since the programme launched
It’s a huge success and we’re getting new juniors joining us every week. We’ve adopted the proven England Squash junior progress awards system to help us develop and support our younger players.
There are now two junior coaching sessions on a Saturday afternoon for around 20 children – 5-9 year olds at 2pm and 10+ at 3pm.
For just £30, a junior gets:
✓ Four beginner squash lessons
✓ A junior KARAKAL racket and ball
✓ Protective goggles
✓ A Squash Stars t-shirt and drawstring bag
Sign up at www.warwickshiresquash.org/squash-stars and choose Warwick Boat Club.
We have a new captain!
Paul Docherty was endorsed as the new squash captain at the EGM on 9th March. He’s bringing lots of fresh ideas and is particularly enthusiastic about tapping into the growing popularity of padel tennis to help more people discover the joy of playing squash and squash 57 (the new name for racketball).
“I’m delighted to be the new captain – it’s a great section with loads going on and I’m keen to attract new members, as well as increase the value the club offers to existing squash players. I want to thank Graeme [Mascall] on behalf of the whole section for the great job he’s done for the last 4 ½ years, and for his advice and support.”
We’ll hear more from Paul in due course but in the meantime, feel free to introduce yourself if you see him at the club.

Coaching update from Jon Peak
Saturdays are pretty busy these days with Alison running junior coaching sessions in the morning, and then two further sessions in the afternoon with me. Saturday seniors is really popular, especially if I play them dance music and buy them all a drink afterwards – it’s an active couple of hours between 2pm and 4pm.
Our mixed ability racketball sessions for everyone regardless of age, ability and skill, have now been moved to Saturday at 1pm. The numbers are growing with up to 12 people on court some weeks. Scan the QR code to join the WhatsApp group and keep up to date.
Thursday evening sessions are also getting busier with beginners at 6.30, intermediates at 7.30, and advanced players at 8.30. We’ve had weeks where every session has been fully booked and recently welcomed two badminton players on holiday here from France to try out the sport!
JOINTHE WHATSAPPGROUP
We’re pleased to have two new coaches –James Grimshaw has picked up the sport again after a long break away and is now coaching the juniors – and County Champion Olivia Gow is joining us in April.
We’ve welcomed six new adult members this year and in one week, we had over 50 people playing over the various group sessions.
Success of the juniors
On 4 February, 10 of our juniors played in a mini-series tournament at Edgbaston Priory. We might be the smallest club in the county, but we had the highest number of kids attending from any club.
They looked great in their club shirts and we had lots of comments from other clubs, coaches and parents about their positive attitudes and the effort they put in. Their confidence built as the day went on with over 40 matches played!
We came 1st and 3rd in the beginner ball group and took 2nd place in the single yellow dot group. And we were very proud of Harry, who came first in his group. Max was selected for the English Junior Championships which took place in February in Surrey. With only the top 32 players in the country being accepted, it was fantastic that Warwickshire juniors came away with four titles.
JP encourages more young players to get involved
With numbers of junior players at the Club rising, JP has also been encouraging youngsters further afield to try their hand at squash
He was part of the team running the Squash Activation Zone at the British Junior Open in January. During the threeday event at the University of Birmingham Sports Centre, children from around 20 schools picked up a racket at the Zone, which was set up next to the show court.
In February, he spent a day at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham helping England Squash deliver sessions for around 150 children with no access to other sports.
“These youngsters haven’t had easy starts in life, so it was wonderful to see them focus and build their skills. It’s a great way to have fun and improve teamwork.”
For a club that only has around 100 squash members, that’s not bad going!
Spond is helping us keep track of bookings and payments. Members get automatic reminders and can accept or decline through the app. Ask me if you want to be added.”

From Slovenia to sailing, we’ve got some exciting trips planned
The trip to Lake Bled for a long weekend of squash and outdoor activities is nearly upon us. Eight of our players will travel to Slovenia to enjoy coaching in the morning, then choose from paddle-boarding, swimming or cable car rides in the afternoon. The evenings will mainly be free for eating and drinking.
Mike Hornsby is arranging a SquashSail later in the year. A group will travel to Dartington Squash Club to meet the club players for a mini-tournament, motor up the River Dart from Stoke Gabriel, then sail on two 29’ yachts to Brixham Marina. The evening will mainly be free for eating and drinking.
And we also have a Spanish padel trip in the pipeline for later in the year. More details to follow.

On March 1st, Alex secured a close 7-6; 6-4 win at No. 5 singles versus the University of Roanoke, as part of the Hornets 7-2 win. This was the first time the Hornets have beaten Roanoke since 2019. Then on March 4th, Alex had a huge 7-6; 6-1 win at No. 5 singles in the deciding match to give the Hornets a nailbiting 5-4 win.

We are also actively discussing the long needed improvements to the clubhouse and further important investments in the sports facilities that will enhance our tennis facilities, including potentially having two clay courts and introducing Padel Tennis to the club. As the plans develop, I will be looking to hold information sessions to share details of these plans and to prepare for a possible EGM at which these plans will need to be approved.
As always please provide myself and the rest of your Tennis Committee with as much feedback as you can on how your experience of our club is working and remember, we depend on members such as yourself volunteering to help run the club. If you are available to help support any of the club’s activities, please let me know. I look forward to seeing you around the club.
All the best,

Padel Tennis
Members may be aware that Padel is the UK’s fastest growing racquet sport! It is often described as a mix between tennis and squash and is played on an enclosed court roughly 25 percent smaller than a normal tennis court.
Padel is fast-paced and the ball can be played off the walls like in squash. This leads to long and exciting rallies. Padel is currently booming across Latin America and southern Europe. In Spain there are 4 million padel players and padel is now the country’s second most popular sport, behind only football.
Although late to the game, the UK has recently witnessed a massive spike in interest in padel in recent times; the number of courts installed in the UK has doubled in the last 12 months and the LTA anticipate that there will be 400 courts in the UK by the end of 2023.
Padel is usually played as a doubles game and is popular across the generations, with players from 8-80 playing regularly.
A number of sporting celebrities are keen Padel players, e.g. Andy Murray (who is also an investor in one of the UK’s leading Padel installers), David Beckham, Jurgen Klopp & Pep Guardiola.
We are aware that other clubs in the Midlands are looking at, or have already taken the step to invest in Padel courts. Not wishing to be left behind, and in an effort to keep your club at the forefront of developments in racquet sports and provide excellent and improved facilities for members, your Tennis Committee is actively looking at how we might be able to introduce Padel to WBC.
Myclubhouse tennis court bookings
Members will already be aware that we are using the Myclubhouse system for subscription renewals. In April we will be transferring tennis court bookings to Myclubhouse from Clubspark. You will be informed in due course when this is going to happen but we are aiming for 17th April. Please look out for more details on your emails over the next few weeks.
Access to Myclubhouse is via your internet browser. Just go to wbc.myclubhouse.co.uk, login and go to Information-court bookings. You can access daily or weekly booking sheets to see what courts are available. This page will not be live until court bookings are enabled.
All the rules concerning court bookings are the same as under Clubspark. The new system is very intuitive and straightforward to use.
Given our unique and spectacular location any changes to the appearance and ambiance of the club have to be sensitively taken into account in any proposed changes, but from initial conversations we have had with experts in the installation of Padel courts we think there might be a way – subject to the vagaries of the Warwick Council Planning Department! And assuming we can overcome that hurdle then there’s the question of funding….!!
The LTA are big supporters and promoters of Padel as they see it as a gateway for new players to Tennis. There is a separate Padel section on the LTA website which has a lot of useful information.
Those who are interested in learning more may find the following links helpful.

If you want to try Padel you can also book Padel taster sessions at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton
- www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/PadelNTC
Please feel free to contact any member of the Tennis Committee for more information on Padel. We will endeavour to keep members informed of progress with this initiative.

Facilities report
Paul & Chris, our groundsmen have been working hard to get the tennis courts to a high standard of playing surface. This involves the use of a lot of heavy equipment and is time consuming. Algae and moss continue to be a nuisance, and treating with chemicals is quite evasive. We are looking at getting a professional expert in to sort this, who have the right personal protection and equipment. I know Jon Martin my senior facilities volunteer is in total agreement. We have decided to save money, by retaining the existing fencing along court 1-5, it is in reasonable condition, and Paul may repaint the posts.

Recycling your old Balls...
Why do I bother?
Since mid 2018 I have sorted and sent several thousand tennis balls to Recycaball, for repressuring, re-selling or giving to charities. Recycaball is a non-profit making organisation that gives money to various charities each year. We have received almost £500 for the balls since 2018, this money has been spent on...
• A mixed recycling bin, the recycaball bin, bird and bat boxes for the Club site and £270 given to local charities - the Friendship Project and Waverley Dementia Day Care Centre in Kenilworth.
We haven’t had many decent balls being recycled lately, so if you have a lot in your cupboard at home, do bring them to the Club to recycle. Any balls that aren’t good enough to send to Recycaball, Gavin gives to the local schools. This way the balls get used again, before they go to the general waste.

The balls need to be clean and not have a damaged nap or be threadbare. If the balls are wet or dirty please don’t put them in the bin as they contaminate the other

Great Bowling in Cyprus
Celia Bellamy escaped the winter blues by signing up for a bowling experience in Cyprus - and the weather was certainly warmer than Warwick in February!
Overlooking the sea, the Athena Paphos hotel has four bowling greens with lots of opportunity to play matches with other bowling guests, and the added bonus of visiting local clubs and teams.
So impressed by the experience, Celia and eighteen members of the Warwick Boat Club are taking the plunge and going out to Cyprus this November, making the most of the opportunity to mix a holiday abroad with bowls at the heart of the experience.

DOES ROWING STOP FOR THE WINTER?
As rowers, we often get asked if we stop rowing for the winter. On the contrary, this is when the gruelling long-distance training takes place. Put the miles and the effort in now, and you’ll emerge as a strong underdog come summer.
Most of our winter training is indoors, on the dreaded ergs, however, we do still manage to get out on the water.
Weekends are particularly popular as this is pretty much the only opportunity to go out in the ‘light’. We run nose-to-tail sessions every Sunday morning to simulate competition, and coached sessions later in the morning for those looking for more technical training. A full risk assessment takes place before every session, and therefore restrictions apply in the dark or when the weather turns against us.
Yes, we still train when it’s cold, raining or snowing (!), however, no rowing takes place when the river is flooded (because the stream is too fast to be safe), when it’s foggy or too windy. This does put stops on a lot of planned training over the winter, however we make up for it with indoor and crosstraining, and we are certainly looking forward to a more settled summer period.
EGM - ROWING COMMITTEE
The rowing section held an EGM in early January to confirm 2 changes to the rowing committee:
Kate Rider is now back as a full committee member.
Richard Nelson has stepped up into the
Men’s Rowing Captain position - a much welcomed move to look after the men’s squads of the rowing section.
The full rowing committee now stands are follows:
Captain of Boats: Simon Horan
Secretary: Jess Lindley
Treasurer: Steve Smith
Women’s Captain: Petrina Witt
Men’s Captain: Richard Nelson
Ordinary Members: Kate Rider, Tanya Podinovskaia, Sam Wesley
