Since the last magazine dropped into your in-box your club has been busy raising money for an Ambulance for the Ukraine, completing various sporting seasons, enjoying the catering from our club caterers Dough and Brew as well as all the usual daily activities that you the members participate in. The club staff have been heavily involved in the build up to the 24 hour tennis event making sure all the places were filled and encouraging people to raise as much sponsor money as possible. The magnificent end result was some £14,000! A huge success. John Martin who runs Dough

Very sadly a few very precious members have passed away recently as well as our beloved Queen.

There has been some great successes in all our sporting sections which I`m confident a representative from each section will include in this edition.

The weather is slowly changing as the Summer months draw to a close. We have had some glorious sunshine over the last few weeks and I`m hoping, as I`m sure

Disability Tennis

The

Friday morning sessions with the students from Evergreen School in Warwick, have recommenced following the summer holidays.

We have been able to secure funding from several sources including King Henry VIII Fund and Warwick Relief in Need that will guarantee the project continues at least until the end of 2023.

The students get enormous benefit from playing tennis and all can make progress irrespective of their personal capabilities.

It’s been a rewarding experience for the volunteers and coach, Cameron Malik too

you are, that over the next few cooler weeks we can all continue enjoying our club and our chosen sport.

Volunteers needed!

There are some weeks where we are a bit short on volunteers and we’d be grateful for a few more members to get involved. All sections can join in, and no particular tennis skills are needed. club is always interested in your thoughts on improvements that can be made to your WBC experience. We appreciate that people are asked to give feedback on everything they buy but we’d be grateful for you to complete the forthcoming ‘survey monkey’ that will be sent out in October. Not only will it help the management team to deliver a great service but will give us year on year statistics on progress (or otherwise).

Warwick Town Triples Tournament

OnSunday,21st August, Warwick Boat Club hosted the finals of their annual Warwick Town Triples competition at the club. Sixteen local teams from within the Warwick district had entered and after some fiercely contested games throughout the season, only four triples now remained. The two semi final matches were played at the start of the day with a team from Warwick Boat Club drawn in each, against Avenue and Snitterfield respectively.

The Warwick Boat Club team of Diane Harvey, Peter Boardman and Mary Wheildon, the current trophy holders, were up against a formidable triple of Richard Freeston and David and Debbie Bloxham. Despite strong play from the WBC team they were no match for the strength of the Snitterfield trio who ran out winners, knocking out the champions 20 shots to 5.

In the second semi final, The Avenue team of Dawn and Paul Chapman and skip Barry Connolly started strongly against the other Warwick Boat Club team of Jacqui Ashley,

Chris Hurst and skip, David Hurst and were soon 8 shots ahead after 12 ends. But undeterred, the WBC team came back strongly to level the match 14 shots all going in to the final end. This was a tense finish with the umpire having to be called to measure for shot before Warwick Boat Club were declared the winners.

After lunch had been enjoyed by players and spectators, the two remaining teams took to the green for the final. Both teams made a steady start and were level after 3 ends. However, Snitterfield took 6 shots on the fourth end and continued to capitalise on this by winning seven of the next eight ends taking their score to 196 after thirteen ends. Despite a late rally from Warwick Boat Club, increasing their score to 12 shots, Snitterfield held on to become the eventual winners 20 shots to 12.

The Mayor of Warwick, Mr Parminder Singh Birdi, joined the club captain and guests for afternoon tea before presenting the prizes to the finalists and the trophy to the Champions, Snitterfield. The day was declared

a resounding success by all who attended and thanks were expressed to the organizing committee for their hard work.

National Lawn Bowls Finals 2022

After

what had been a couple of weeks of unusual conditions where temperatures had at times approached 40ºC, all competitors knew it was going to be difficult playing conditions at Stratford Bowling Club who were this years hosts of the County Finals Weekend. The Ladies Triples Final was between Caroline Edwards, Anita Cowdrill and Tracey Turner-Smith (Royal Leamington Spa) playing our own Boat Club Ladies and last years winners, Jacqui Ashley, Chris Hurst and Mary Wheildon. The teams were fairly evenly matched for most of the game 11 all on 11 ends when WBC started to pull away and led 16-11 at the 13th end but RLS dug deep and managed to turn the tables to win by two shots 20-18.

The afternoon featured the Junior Pairs between Ellie Hurst (Warwick Boat Club) with Hannah Smith (Welford) and Lily-Mae Adams with Emily Kernick (both Sherwood Park). Again they were fairly evenly matched with Ellie and Hannah leading by one shot at 10 ends 11-10, after a gripping second half of the match with some great bowling from the youngsters Lily-Mae and Emily pulled back to win by just 1 shot on the last end winning 15-16.

Ellie Hurst and Hannah Smith runners-up in the Warwickshire Junior Pairs

Assummer drew to a close, the eyes of the bowls world were once again falling on Royal Leamington Spa for the prestigious Bowls England National Finals. This festival of sport is the culmination of a player or teams efforts over the previous five months. Leamington Spa Bowls club fresh from hosting the Lawn Bowls competition at the Commonwealth Games just a few weeks before –and provides the stage for 18 days of fierce competition. The first day was Thursday 25th August and saw Jacqui Ashley, Mary Wheildon and Chris Hurst from Warwick Boat Club representing Warwickshire for the second year in a row in the Ladies Triples. They were drawn against a very strong Surrey Triple the Warwickshire girls had a lot of support from fellow bowlers from the Boat Club and gave there very best against a very confident and skillful Surrey team, Surrey won on the day 22:10

Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls in the limelight

The Commonwealth Games is the premier event in World Bowls and for ten days in early August 227 competitors from 24 countries entered teams and competed across 11 events for the medals at Royal Leamington spa as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Bowls has been part of the Commonwealth Games since the inaugural event in 1930 (then called the British Empire Games held in Hamilton Canada)

Six representatives from the Boat Club volunteered at the Victoria Park venue. Chris Hurst, Di Wood and Ken Butler were field of play volunteers and were seen a few times on the TV coverage sitting at the ends of the rinks turning scoreboards. Dave Hurst, Christopher Mordaunt and Trisha Macfarlane were ‘flash quote reporters’ interviewing competitors straight after their matches and supplying quotes for the Games News Service.

The ten sunny days of competition drew excellent crowd providing a wonderful atmosphere that those who were

World Rowing Masters Regatta,

Libourne 2022

ASeptember saw a large number of Warwick rowers head to Libourne in France for the World Masters Regatta. This is an annual event that takes place in a different corner of the world every year and is open to clubs and competitors from all over the world. The events are split by boat and age categories into races of up to 8 crews and are rowed over a 1000m multi-lane regatta course. Needless to say that the standard of rowing is extremely high with ex-olympic and world-level athletes fighting it out for 1st place. Libourne welcomed over 4000 competitors from 50 different nations, of which 29 came all the way from Warwick.

The racing started on Wednesday 7th September, with strong performances from 3 of Warwick crews, with the highlight being a very close 2nd place for Steve Sidaway and Graham Giles in a double scull event. This was a good taster of what was to come, as both got first places later in the week. Steve Sidaway won the E1x event on the Friday, whereas Graham Giles teamed up with an ex-Warwick rower from Abingdon Sam Mercer to win the C2x event on the Saturday. Huge congratulations go to all three - you really made Warwick proud.

Other notable performances have been the Women’s D8+ that saw a few women return to rowing this year and race for their first time after a long break, brilliantly coxed by Sam Wesley and crossing the line in 3rd place. Another successful composite crew made up of Warwick and Bristol rowers came 3rd in the D4x event - not a bad result for their first outing considering they had never trained in that combination before! A special mention goes to Liz McEvoy for racing in a single scull in a WC1x event - a special moment for her as she raced it in honour of her coach in Australia, achieving both her goals of not capsizing and not coming last!!

Sunday saw mixed racing, with crews made up of 50:50 men/women. Mixed rowing is quite unusual in the world of rowing, so tends to be more informal, fun and with more scratch crews. Highlights were seeing David Tarbun race in an eight after many years’ away from rowing, a Warwick MixC4x gaining a 3rd place, and finally Sam Wesley and Graham Giles crossing the finish line 2nd to complete the racing for Warwick, much to the applause and cheering from all of our squads.

Overall, this was a fantastic week for Warwick, with all the hard training paying off,

inspiration for future goals found, and lots of memories made. Big thanks go to Jon Martin and Simon Beard for towing the boats to and from the venue, to Kate Rider for organising us and our equipment throughout the week, and to David Tarbun for taking on a volunteering role at the event.

Based on the performance over the week of racing, Warwick Boat Club has scored 171 points, placing us 4th out of the 30 British clubs that attended the event and 15th in the World! This is a huge achievement for Warwick, which wouldn’t be possible without all the hard work of our athletes, coaches and volunteers.

Group squash supports Ambulance Aid

On Saturday 3rd September, the courts were buzzing!

On3rd September while the 24-hour Tennis-a-Thon was taking place, 14 squash players turned out to support the club’s fundraiser for Ambulance Aid. We took over both courts, turned up the music and got stuck in to drills and games. Even DeDe the labrador came along to support and enjoyed chasing her ball afterwards while the rest of us had a drink in the garden.Group coaching takes place every Saturday between 4pm and 6pm. If you haven’t already tried it, just come along when you can. It’s the perfect opportunity to get on court with players of all ages, levels and abilities.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a pro – JP finds a way for everyone to get involved, plus you’re running around, having fun and getting fit for two hours. What’s not to like?

Mixed ability squash has arrived!

We’re

running two mixed ability squash sessions at the club – between 12 and 2pm on Saturday 12th and Saturday 19th November.

“Hopefully this is just the start of mixed ability squash at Warwick Boat Club,” says JP. “Squash is one of those sports where everyone thinks you have to be super fit or really experienced, but anyone can play and have a lot of fun doing it. I’m on the lookout for more sponsorship because I’d like to continue running these sessions and give everyone the chance to try it out for themselves.”

It’s guaranteed to be a lot of fun so spread the word. All ages and abilities are welcomed.

Commonwealth Games 2022

The squash update

Both of our coaches, Alison and JP, indulged their all-consuming passion for the sport and volunteered for the duration of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Alison was courtside and could clearly be seen at times wiping the floor to make sure the courts were safe for play. JP was a ‘Have a Go’ volunteer at the Squash Zone where more than 2,000 members of the public played on the mini-court, set up outside the

main courts to promote the game.

He also enjoyed meeting some of the star players who got into the spirit of things and turned up to give us lesser mortals a ‘game’ or two. Even the mighty Jahangir Khan, former World No. 1 player from Pakistan, arrived for a knockabout!

“It was an amazing seven days,” says JP.

“The mini-court was open for play from 10am to 9pm every day and people were queuing up to join in! We also spent a lot of

time promoting local Midlands clubs and the Warwickshire Squash Stars programme which we’ve now signed up for at WBC – and we welcomed Perry the Bull, the CWG mascot. What an experience!”

Ambulance Aid

24 HOUR TENNIS -

Game, Set, Match!

£10 - 12,000 target smashedWBC to send an Ambulance to Ukraine!

Weplayed through sunshine and showers, day and night, for the 24 hour TennisAThon on September 3-4. Undeterred by forces of nature or the floodlight blip! The Bowls section also ran a well attended event on the Saturday.

We were treated to delicious Ukrainian honey cake, and regaled with the lyrical sounds of Mark Pritchard - Jeffs (co-founder of Ambulance Aid). Members and family alike enjoyed sampling our new Dough and Brew café’s BBQ and pizza van.

The magnificent amount raised to date was announced at a well attended presentation at the club on Saturday. Over 50 members were present for the big reveal…

Local dignitaries gave presentations for outstanding members’ contributions: Warwick and Leamington MP - Matt Western, the High Sheriff of Warwickshire - David Kelham, Lord Lieutenant - Tim Cox, and Councillor Jan Matecki of Warwick District Council.

So how much did we raise? Our original ambitious target was £10-12K - enough to purchase an ambulance for Ukraine. To date, our grand total across both events, together with the Fashion Show earlier in the summer, is about £14,000 and still rising! What a fabulous achievement, guys! – massive kudos to all 84 members who took part and to all their wonderful sponsors.

Awards for special contributions including some original Ukrainian artwork:

Guardian Angel Angelo Cugini, for magnificent services in repairing ambulances

Most money raised Steve Larke

Hard-core Charlotte Littler and Steve Larke, whose teams kept the ball rolling overnight!

Marketing genius Graham & Yvonne Harrington, for excellence in comms

Entertainment Mark Pritchard-Jeffs for solo guitar

Supportive staff Laura Mackay, Susie Rowe & Carey McLean – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Diplomatic relations Max Browning & Steve Chidlow for liaising with our neighbours

Photography Steve Chidlow at TennisAThon

Dressage Amanda Ray for decorating courts

Mary Berry Sally Key for Ukrainian family who made the delicious honey cake

Winner of Sunflower Seeds guess Nigel Bradnack (closest answer 1800 seeds)

The money raised will be donated to Ambulance Aid to buy an ambulance. WBC members will be invited to write messages of support to Ukraine before it leaves. Already Ambulance Aid has fundraised to send 7 ambulances and 1 SUV to Ukraine. Created in March 2022 in Stratford, as a not for profit charity, it is run by volunteers.

Working in partnership with Medical Aid Ukraine (MAU), the ambulances are filled with medical aid. Dr Tania Hebert is the West

Midlands Coordinator for MAU. Dr Hebert spoke eloquently about the Ukraine war and its continuing devastating impact on families.

Ambulance Aid Director, Claudine Pearson, thanked WBC & reminded us of a quote by our late Queen, “On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine.”

Jan Matecki and High Sheriff, David Kelham

“We appeal to all groups to fundraise, to buy their own ambulance and join our convoy! Support can be given to other clubs, businesses, schools and villages to fundraise.”

Ukrainian cake was served as a thank you for all. It had been made by Dr Hebert’s mother and grandmother. Sunflowers decorating the club were kindly given by Lodge Farm Sunflowers who have donated to the cause.

Tania Hebert said; “So far in Ukraine since 24th February the WHO has confirmed over 500 attacks on healthcare facilities. It’s shocking. I am Ukrainian-born but have grown up in the UK and now as a doctor, I feel guilty that I am not helping more, that I’m not in Ukraine caring for the injured.

But seeing British people like the dedication of the team in Warwick Boat Club coming together, fundraising and playing tennis for 24 hours straight for this cause is humbling and moves me to tears. We can all achieve so much if we join with others for a common goal.”

• Donations are welcomed via JustGiving https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/warwickboatclub?utm_ term=K336wgnDm

Otellia at the o2

InJune this year Roger Federer released a video on social media inviting applicants between the ages of 12 and 16 to come to trials to be a ball kid for the Laver Cup. Ottelia applied and was invited to a 90 minute trial at the Olympic Park in London, on the weekend when numerous trials were run. At each one approximately 100 boys and girls were put through their paces, running, doing exercises, catching, throwing etc - all under the watchful eye of the assessors.

With such a large number of applicants the chance of being successful was slim so Ottelia was absolutely delighted when she received an email confirming she had been successful, one of only 12 girls and 24 ball kids. Over the next few months there were training sessions, each one back in London and 4 hours long, teaching them how to be ball kids. They all came from different backgrounds, were different ages but what they all had in common was tennis.

The weekend of the actual Laver Cup was an absolutely amazing experience for Ottelia, starting with practice day on the Thursday when the big four (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray) were all on court together for the first and only time (66 Grand Slams on one court at one time!). The next three days of the actual event was hard work, long days but brilliant fun. The kids worked in teams of six and had set positions. Ottelia was a centre - responsible for running the net. Ottelia met some tennis greats including Dyokovic, Murray and Federer but her absolute favourite player was Tiafoe. She was on court for Federer’s last ever match and picked up the very last ball hit after Team World won the Laver Cup. Overall it was an amazing experience for Ottelia, inspirational and inspiring, she wishes she could do it all over again.

TENNIS Court upgrade from Gary Sharp

Three courts, (8/9/10), are to be upgraded to the new digital lights in late October, there should be very minimal disruption.

Fencing on courts 5/8/9/10/ is to be replaced in late November. This will create disruption for a three week period, but we will try and manage this as best as we can, to ease any inconvenience.

Paul always works hard to keep the courts up to scratch. New nets have been installed. The damaged score boards are a challenge as the cost of replacement is very expensive, but we arelooking at options.
