After a long, hot summer we hope the September edition arrives along with some refreshing rain! We look forward to welcoming the new Rector, Ann Peachy. There have been farewells to long-standing residents Freda O’Toole and John Hale who are leaving the area. We also look back on a super Rowington Village Show and some fascinating information in Nature Notes and The Lapworth Local History group.
Welcome
Lots going on in our Village Halls too!
The Ferncumbe News team would like to thank Rowington Parish Council for their funding support which means that every household in Rowington will receive a copy of at least the next six editions. It is our hope that many of these households will wish to donate £10, for a whole year’s editions which, added to increased advertising revenues, will cover our costs beyond this period. It would be great to expand our circulation in Shrewley and Hatton too, and we appeal for more content to be sent from those communities as Thewell.Ferncumbe News team

Welcome to our new Rector
All the parishes will be represented at what we are planning as a region wide welcome and celebration for Ann’s arrival, and so we welcome support from the communities not just by attending, but by helping to decorate the church and/or in supporting
The Ferncumbe Benefice are delighted to welcome into our community our new Rector - the Reverend Ann Peachey, who will be joining us in AnnSeptember.comes to us from the Bridge Benefice, Coventry, where she was Assistant Curate, and before that in the same role for St John & St Lawrence at Knowle. On behalf of all the wider communities in the region we warmly welcome her, and look forward to starting our spiritual journey together with her and her family. We will be welcoming her into the benefice with a very special service of licensing and installation, at Holy Trinity, Hatton on Thursday 22nd September, starting at 7:30pm. This service, which marks the start of Ann’s ministry across the parishes, will be conducted by The Right Reverend John Stroyan, Bishop of Warwick, and The Venerable Barry Dugmore, Archdeacon AlthoughMissioner.the service will take place at Hatton, this is very much Ann’s introduction into the Benefice as a whole, so the service will be organised and conducted on behalf of the surrounding parishes of Hatton and Haseley, Rowington and Lowsonford, and Honiley and Wroxall.

If you’d like to join us please email ferncumbebenefice@gmail.com so we can include you in numbers and we’ll send the fuller details in due course. On behalf of the Ferncumbe Benefice, being the parishes of Hatton & Haseley, Rowington & Lowsonford, and Honiley & Wroxall.

We’ve also had the organ serviced and the technical inspection done ready for the electrification of the clock .....and on the 22nd of this month, as a benefice, we will welcome our new vicar, Ann. Her installation service for the benefice will be held at Holy Trinity, Hatton at 7.30pm on Thursday 22 September - we’re really looking forward to her joining us here at Rowington - I’m sure we will extend our usual hospitality and welcome. Please see the article and advert elsewhere in the magazine to find out more about the service and Ann!
All are welcome at this key service, which will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet not just Ann but community members from all the parishes.
Churchwarden Report – St. Laurence, Rowington
Welcome to September - where did the summer go? In a haze of parched grass, Commonwealth cheering and volunteering and an extremely hot village show! Here at St. Laurence, following our amazing festival week in June, we’ve been busy with weddings and baptisms over the last two months - a huge thank you to Di, our coordinator ,who works with the families on these joyous occasions. We also welcomed the Warwickshire Geological Conservation Group to St. Laurence in August as they wanted to visit where the famous geologist Rev. Peter Bellinger Brodie was vicar during the latter half of the 19th century.
It’s looking a busy autumn - with services on the 1st Sunday at 6.00pm and 4th Sunday at 11.00am and our Thursday evening complines - apart from of course on Thursday 22nd when we will be joining our colleagues at Hatton to welcome Rev. Ann Peachey to Ferncumbe. We look forward to seeing you at one of our September services and as the school term starts we ask God for great positivity, energy and curiosity, for teachers and pupils alike, as people head back to their classrooms to start a new academic year.

The Clerk confirmed that members had discussed and agreed this at the June meeting and the Clerk had written back to Graham Stanley as requested. The County Council had not responded but the Clerk would chase this up.
It was also announced that the District Council have used some reserves and government funding totalling around £430,000 to launch a discretionary energy rebate scheme aimed at residents in Council Tax Bands E-H who receive local tax reduction, and those persons with a disabled person reduction or severely mentally impaired, will receive a one off payment of £150 and all residents in Council Tax Bands A-H, who get council tax reduction will receive a £50 top up to the earlier payment they received of £150. By introducing this scheme, Councillor Hales was trying to help residents who are the most vulnerable and were missed off the earlier Government scheme, which was aimed at residents A-D, but not in other bands. Residents who pay by direct debit will receive by 12th September.

Members of the Parish Council have asked me to relay their concerns to you and CRT in the strongest terms. Weight limit signage - Removal of any weight limit signage at this point would compromise the safety of bridge users.
The Clerk had circulated a draft Grievance Procedure and Disciplinary Procedure. It was proposed by Councillor T Remment and seconded by T Parker that the Grievance Procedure and Disciplinary Procedures be adopted by the Parish Council.
Following discussions, it was agreed that the Clerk email Mr Roberts as follows: ‘Your email was discussed at the meeting last evening and I was asked to thank you for your persistence with this matter, which is one of safety for the residents of Lowsonford and other road/bridge users.
Members were unanimous in their concern about a ‘technical ‘ meeting which has taken place about the structural safety of Bridge 41 South Stratford Canal. Specifically, the outcome of this technical meeting overturns the Surveyor’s Structural Report of 2016. Effectively this technical meeting has concluded, that the resurfacing of the bridge has now resolved the structural inadequacies of the bridge. This cannot possibly be the case.

Let me explain a little about who we are and what we do! We are a group of around twenty members, ladies and gentlemen, ages ranging from 60’s to 90’s We meet once a week, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Tuesday afternoons, in Lapworth Village Hall. The original idea (over 30 years ago) was to meet up and have a chat and a cup of tea. We still do that, but now we try to give a little more. We occasionally have speakers who come and talk to us on various interesting subjects. We also arrange very easy quizzes, we provide simple light lunches, once a month, such as ploughman’s / soup & sandwiches, we play card bingo games, and have one session per month when the group can just please themselves what they do (play cards, scrabble, or just chat). We have also recently introduced our “Berries Bring & Buy”, which has proved popular and is a bit of fun, and also raises extra funds for “treats” for you all. All of the above is arranged through our Committee (The Elderflowers) who give enormous amounts of their time to arrange these activities for our members.
We are largely self funding, with subscriptions from members of £10 for each of the three sessions per year which covers our hall hire charges, insurances, lunches, etc ), and a huge £1 each week, which is for your tea and biccys! We are also extremely fortunate to have the offer of extra funding from local organisations and charities in the village, should we need it! We are always ready to welcome new members to our group (and committee) so if you are interested, please come along to the Village Hall on September 6th. You don’t have to live in Lapworth, we welcome members from Rowington, Hockley Heath, Shirley, Knowle, Henley in Arden, Baddesley Clinton, Wootton Wawen, and all ports in between. All we ask is that you get yourself to the Hall, as we are not able to provide transport.

Our autumn talks programme begins at 7:45pm on Tuesday September 13th with a talk by Dr Robert Bearman on the life of Marie Corelli. Marie Corelli moved from London to Mason’s Croft in Church Street, Stratfordupon-Avon in 1899 and lived there until her death in 1924. The house still stands and bears a blue plaque that you may have spotted when you have walked past. But who was Marie Corelli? She was actually one of the most popular novelists of her day, writing nearly thirty novels that were eagerly devoured by millions in England, America and the colonies. Her readers ranged from Queen Victoria and Gladstone, to the poorest of shop girls. Her novels outsold even those of Arthur Conan Doyle. But it seems there is more to Marie Corelli than meets the eye. Her life was not without scandal; Marie Corelli was not her real name for a start. Community to leave the low levels to the swallows. Were they perhaps taking advantage of the absence of swallows?
June-July 2022 On June 25th the summer’s dismal bird scene was brought alight by no less than seven red kites following the mowing of a hay field on Shrewley Farm. Somehow word seems to get around in the kite world that easy pickings of mice and voles are to be had - we had witnessed a similar scene last year during a family holiday near Wenlock Edge. The next day Lindsay and I saw three kites over the fields opposite Barn Close Nurseries. Several days later three kites were reported (by Jenny Titterton) to be doing the same over the field behind Shrewley Village Hall when the mown hay was being turned. Thanks to John Miers and Jenny for telling us about these events, and to Phil Smith, who managed to get a photo of one of the
Anotherseven.remarkable raptor sighting was reported by Mark Titterton: a buzzard in Claverdon swooping down and capturing a grass snake, promptly followed by another buzzard doing exactly the same! Other than that, the mid-summer avian scene was quite worrying. Although chiffchaffs, blackcaps, and whitethroats were present in their usual numbers, several other species, notably swallows and house martins were well down. We did see an unusual spectacle of house martins flying very low over a field, contravening their interspecies agreement
Nature Notes
MagpiesRook
I don’t remember ever seeing a rook in our garden before. It made a change from the vast numbers of jackdaws and magpies we get, sometimes in double figures (our trailcam also caught those three magpies in the bird bath).
Red Kite Phil Smith
I was particularly disturbed by the apparent lack of willow warblers, whose song was formerly said to be the most frequently heard in woodlands. The only ones I came across were about four singing males, heard from a short stretch of the canal towpath near TheseRowington.declines are all manifested across the whole country. Another disturbing example concerns rooks. John Miers reports that the rookery at Shrewley Farm no longer exists and the one at Hatton Country World seems to have got smaller. So it was a pleasant surprise when one appeared on our lawn in the early hours of June 22nd, snapped by the trailcam.

Similar reports have appeared in the media from elsewhere in the country. It seemed to us that the worst affected were tortoiseshells, peacocks, and red admirals.
Also a pleasant surprise has been the return of collared doves to Shrewley Common, another species reported to be on the decline nationally. We find it difficult to remember many of the names of wildflowers we encounter but at least the single pyramidal orchid , growing in the same spot as last summer, was easy enough. The red campions of early summer gave way later to similarly coloured willow herbs, while bird’s eye trefoil and a bewildering variety of yellow dandelion-like flowers - notably hawkweed and the few goat’s beard specimens we found on the canal towpath - replaced the buttercups and celandines. Ragwort was also plentiful but we didn’t see a single plant covered in those yellow and black caterpillars of the cinnabar moth, nor did we see any adults. By way of compensation, we were pleasedinburnetsofnumbersencountertosix-spotthe wildflower Verney.Comptonatdevelopedbeenthatmeadowshave To be photographed, they kindly settled on knapweed. It’s been a bad summer for butterflies. Several people told me of their surprising absence on their buddleias and we found the same to be true of buddleias out and about, especially those that flourish near one of the railway footbridges.

The Lowsonford, Rowington and District Horticultural Association Show was held on Saturday 6th August 2022 at Shakespeare Hall. Blessed by fabulous weather, a very good time was had by all who came to admire the work and talent of the exhibitors, and to enjoy the sideshows, the excellent band, Rythm Street, and refreshments of all kinds. The 76 year old tradition of the show is only maintained by the tireless work and commitment of the committee, so sincere thanks go to Lucy Marsden and her team of organisers for another great show!
Community
The Show would also not survive without every person’s support in the two villages – the entrants, stall helpers, car parking attendants, teas personnel, raffle ticket buyers, donors to the tombola and children’s prizes, classes schedule, logistics – the list goes on and on. Thanks to everyone involved and we look forward to next year!

Freda says goodbye to Rowington
To say goodbye to Freda the Village Flower Show committee, along with a few close friends, presented her with a lovely picture of the allotments, painted by local artist Yvonne Harrington, at a get together on Rowington allotments. To say that she will be missed is somewhat of an understatement. Village life is greatly diminished by her leaving and all who new her will always remember the huge contribution she made and the unselfish way she gave of herself and her time.
Freda has lived in Rowington all her life, first in the family Farm, her maiden name being Johnson and for the last 20 years in her Rowington bungalow. She has been married twice the first giving her two sons Peter and Mark. The second happy marriage to Mike ended sadly with Mike contracting M.S and leaving her all too soon.
Afternoon celebration with Freda at the allotments

Freda O’Toole has moved to Southampton to be near her son Peter, her daughter in law and her two grandchildren.
Freda O’Toole
Throughout her life, in good times and bad, Freda has been involved in pretty much every aspect of Rowington village life. Elderberries, The Garden Club, Lapworth Bowling Club, Lowsonford Woman’s Club, Old Peoples Christmas Meal, The All Sorts sale, Wroxhall Teas, The Village Flower Show (with her prize winning veg.) The Allotment Association and pretty much any event that any one put on was helped in some way by Freda. This is not to mention her career as a nurse and in later life she looked after her bedridden mother and then nursed Mike throughout his illness.
