Waiting for a bus is like waiting for a bus. You wait for ages and then one or more comes along; you board, tap your card, take a seat, wait for your stop and get off at – or near – your destination.

It’s a simple process, but one that, for many, offers so much more than getting from A to B. Especially when A is the bus stop near their home and B the bus stop at the hospital, for example.

A lifeline in an almost literal sense. And while TfL refers to them as ‘bus spider maps’, when you look at an overview of bus routes in a given area, they can have a vein-like appearance – they truly can be the lifeblood of a community’s infrastructure.

It is no wonder, therefore, that when the flow of buses is stemmed, the community is impacted. We don’t notice the blood flowing through our veins and arteries until it is cut off, and then there can be painful paraesthesia, alerting our brain to the problem so action can be taken. Similarly, a good bus service is one that flows regularly and reliably, not requiring a second thought from those wishing to board. When that flow is restricted, it too can cause pain.

You don’t have to be a bus spotter to appreciate the beauty of the bus. There are over 8,000 of them across London, serving 19,000 bus stops and carrying around 6.5 million passengers every day. That’s a lot of important A to Bs. But buses also carry an important message, and I don’t mean messages of extra funding for the NHS. For many, they carry a message of opportunity, of freedom and of independence. As a local magazine, we hold our hands up to being inwardlooking – in fact, we aim to be just that – but no community is an island. And to adapt John Donne’s words, any community’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in the community.

Campaign launch for 20mph speed limits in Wanstead and South Woodford Campaigners seeking to introduce 20mph speed limits on roads in Wanstead and South Woodford will be holding a questionand-answer session at Wanstead Library this month. “The expert panel taking questions will reveal the many benefits this can have. For example, making the streets less hostile for people walking or cycling and reduced noise and pollution,” said Elisa Brady of the 20’s Plenty for Us group. “We are not giving up on the rest of Redbridge, but a smaller, cohesive area is at least a start… As a group of local residents, with local knowledge of every street, we can

New year refuse collection dates

Collections due on 1 to 4 January will be delayed by two days; collections due on 5 January will be delayed by three days and all subsequent collections until 12 January will be delayed by one day. Redbridge Council is progressing plans to implement pay and display parking regulations on the High Street. “The council is currently carrying out the required legal process for the introduction of new parking controls on Wanstead High Street. Following this, any new parking controls are scheduled to become live early this year,” said a spokesperson.

The new regulations follow a somewhat controversial public consultation last year.

Duck champion appointed to save local waterfowl from bread

The site of the Wanstead Quaker Meeting House was acquired by the Quakers in 1870, with the current building constructed in 1968

The Redbridge Ramblers will lead a six-mile walk from the Wanstead Quaker Meeting House, through Epping Forest and onto Buckhurst Hill this month. Before departing the Bush Road venue, participants will be given a tour of the building, which overlooks a burial ground of simple headstones, including that of the house’s architect Norman Frith. The walk will begin at 10am on 10 January (nonmembers welcome). The Redbridge Ramblers organise regular local walks, day trips and holidays abroad. Call 020 8498 9850

Keeping safe in the snow: does your road need gritting?

The Epping Forest Centenary Trust has appointed a Duck Champion Project Officer to spread the message that bread is bad. “Many of the waterfowl and the ponds in which they live, including the ones in Wanstead Park, are currently suffering the consequences of people’s good intentions turned bad… Just like for humans, bread is not the best type of food for them and any bread left uneaten can pollute the ponds,” said Ute Villavicencio, who is offering free educational sessions for local primary schools. Redbridge Council has published a list of roads that are gritted in the winter months in response to Met Office weather forecasts.

“These roads have been identified as key routes, ensuring that all residents live within 500 metres of a gritted road. It is impractical to grit every road in the borough, but if your road is not on our ‘gritted roads list’ and is really icy, then you may contact us…and we will pass your request on to our highways department,” said a council spokesperson.

New Superdrug store opens on the High Street

Wanstead Park summit offers potential breakthrough on funding

Health and beauty retailer Superdrug opened a new shop in Wanstead last month. “The new branch, which has created 11 new jobs, will offer customers an array of affordable beauty essentials, cosmetics, toiletries and designer brand fragrances,” said a spokesperson for the company. Located at 79–81 High Street – the former site of HSBC, which closed in April 2016 – and led by manager Michelle Matthews, the new store will open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands (FWP) have hailed a long-awaited summit on the park’s future as a potential breakthrough in resolving obstacles to a lottery-funded scheme of improvements. The meeting, which took place at the Houses of Parliament, brought together a high-profile gathering of stakeholders in the project for the park’s regeneration. “We were encouraged to hear that the City of London is still aiming to submit a bid by August 2018 and complete the Parkland Plan by the end of the year,” said John Meehan, chairman of the FWP.

Redbridge Council is encouraging residents and organisations to apply for Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding to improve their neighbourhood. CIL is a charge made on most new developments, of which 15% is allocated for local infrastructure projects, such as improved lighting, playground equipment or planting. Interactive theatrical performance for babies at local drama centre

A touring production company will be bringing an interactive show for babies aged up to 18 months to Redbridge Drama Centre next month. Refurbishments at Haven House Children’s Hospice

by Essex Art Club, the event will see Trevor Harwood – a former merchant banker – explain his techniques. “On watercolour paper, the handmade Unison pastels prove water soluble. This enables an underpainting to be created… You will see how layers are added, building the intensity,” said Trevor, who will also use an acrylic base with pastel colours layered on top. A series of refurbishments to upgrade the care facilities at Haven House Children’s Hospice will begin this month. “In early January, work will start to install a bigger and brighter lift to access the bedrooms, the facilities on the first floor will be redesigned and a new kitchen and café area will be added downstairs for families to enjoy,” said a spokesperson. While the building works are taking place, Haven House’s respite and residential services will move to The Holly Private Hospital in Buckhurst Hill for a period of up to 16 weeks.

rom December last year, the W12 service was reduced from three to two buses an hour on Monday to Saturday daytimes. There is no change at other times. Transport for London (TfL) state this is to improve reliability and more closely match demand.

There is some sympathy with this argument – the W12 route is a complex one, combining narrow roads with main streets, and it is inevitable that buses may fall behind their schedule, particularly with the congestion on the suburban streets in Wanstead, South Woodford and Walthamstow Village (which has been slightly mitigated there by the Mini-Holland scheme). However, cutting the bus frequency will have the immediate consequence that passengers, often elderly, will spend more time waiting at stops just as winter approaches. Many younger people, including commuters, use the service after a hard day’s work and welcome the door-todoor service and friendly smiles from both the drivers and other passengers.

The W12 route is one of the few that takes you directly into Whipps Cross Hospital, and many vulnerable and reduced mobility users

count on this to get to appointments. Pressure group Save Our Buses (SOB) also highlights this point. “The W12 has unique links and provides many Wanstead and South Woodford residents with their direct public transport to Whipps Cross Hospital,” said SOB campaigner John Darnell. If the service is scrapped, people may have to pay for expensive taxis or rely on their car and use the expensive car park at the hospital. None of these alternatives help those who need it most. When you are ill you need your transport to be as stress free as possible.

TfL cite the lack of demand, but an enhanced 15-minute frequency would reverse the decline and encourage more people to board the bus. Supply creates its own demand.

Given that there is the general policy in London to encourage more use of public transport, then this would reduce demand to use cars and taxis and help reduce the associated pollution. We should be improving

of passengers’ journeys on the bus would enable us to see which are the popular routes and which ones are the least popular during the working day. The bus service could then be tailored rather than a blanket reduction, which does not take account of variable passenger demand. public transport provision and capacity, not decreasing it.

Why not break the route up to simplify it in busier times? The issue is one of frequency, but that does not need to be sacrificed at the expense of the route length. Key points along the route are Wanstead and South Woodford stations, Whipps Cross and Walthamstow Central. SOB say their monitoring of the W12’s performance during peak hours has found that services are struggling to cope with traffic delays; buses are running close together instead of being evenly spaced.

If some of the buses started at Wanstead and, say, finished in Whipps Cross and then turned back, and there were direct routes interspersed in these shorter trip services, then this may help the flow and ensure more of an equitable service. An analysis

TfL needs to work with the highway departments of both councils (Redbridge and Waltham Forest) to improve traffic flow so that the service frequency is not compromised.

Some of the roads are very tight due to parked cars and the proposed changes to parking regulations in Wanstead will potentially have a diversionary impact, pushing cars from Halstead Road, Cowley Road and Wellington Road onto Elmcroft Avenue and surrounding roads, making the bus journey slower. Therefore, we have written letters to Redbridge Council and to Claire Mann, TfL’s director of bus operations, outlining our concerns and proposals. We will report back when we have a response.

Redbridge Libraries are welcoming spaces; whether you want to develop your skills, make new friends or just make a difference, then we have opportunities to suit you.

At Wanstead Library, our friendly Volunteer Champions are available to help you with finding the right role for you and will show you the kinds of opportunities available locally. One of our current roles is helping the public with basic computer skills. This might involve helping disabled people with their Blue Badge applications or it may involve assisting someone with their iPad. We also have a role suitable for a student to help once a month on a Saturday with Cantonese Playtime. Cantonese is not required, just a sense of fun!

There are also Story and Rhyme Time sessions on Wednesday afternoons – a well-attended fun group with lots of local mums and children singing songs and listening to stories.

It’s only half an hour once a week, but you will also assist in setting it up and saying goodbyes, and of course, it’s open to anyone who has a sense of fun and an interest in participating in singing. Operatic voices are not required, just the love of having fun with children.

We encourage a wide range of people from all age groups and backgrounds to apply for our diverse range of volunteering roles. We have a small team of dedicated volunteers at Wanstead Library who really enjoy participating in the life of their community.

Or perhaps you would be interested in becoming a home library service volunteer, delivering books to people who are now unable to get to the library due to illness or disability but who still want to read? We try to match volunteers up with someone near to where they live, so cars can stay parked at home.

Passing down the line Millicent Brown introduces us to Snaresbrook FC’s new manager Rob Caine, who has taken over from Paul Staniford. And, despite a youthful age of 26, he already has nearly two decades of experience at the club

I

t is a far cry since the time he was kicking a football around on Nutter Field, but these days he’s standing alongside some of those very same teammates as the manager leading Snaresbrook FC in one of Essex’s top soccer leagues.

Rob Caine, 26, started out playing for Snaresbrook as an eight-year-old back in the 1998–99 season, but was forced to retire from playing early after sustaining a serious knee injury during an Essex County Cup final. However, despite this long-term injury, Rob didn’t stop supporting the others, continuing to attend matches. And now his loyalty has paid off as this season he has been put in charge, having been appointed team manager of Snaresbrook FC, which is currently playing in the Essex Olympian Football League (EOFL).

But Rob has still got a long way to go until he has spent as much time at the club as his former manager, Paul ‘Stan’ Staniford, 58, who has been with Snaresbrook for over 41 years since beginning playing there as a 17-year-old.

During his years with Snaresbrook, Stan took up various roles, being made secretary in 1988 and given his initial managerial job with the first team back in 1990. Throughout the years, he was also reserve team manager and youth team manager on various occasions.

And amazingly, Stan, who still sometimes runs the line at Snaresbrook matches, was even made the EOFL’s linesman of the year in the season before last (2015–16).

But after so long in charge at Snaresbrook, Stan has decided it is time to reward Rob for his loyalty and pass the leadership to him. “I have been Snaresbrook’s first team manager since 2006, and have decided that now is

the right time to hand over the reins to Rob Caine,” said Stan. “He played for the youth team and then as an adult at Snaresbrook until he sustained his injury, which made it impossible for him to continue his playing career. Rob is so dedicated to the club and knows everything about it and all the players so well that he is the perfect person to take over at the helm.”

On hearing of the decision to put him in charge, Rob said: “I definitely love the club and wouldn’t want to do it for any other team.

Therefore, I am thrilled about being made Snaresbrook’s manager. The club means everything to me and this appointment allows me to continue to help the team flourish in their league and cup games.”

Four footballers have remained with the team for around 20 years since starting out as eightyear-olds with Rob. They are: Captain Josh Woodcock, Drew Barbier, Mitchell Collymore and Dominic Herbert.

Don’t you know

about the bird?

With the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch taking place this month, Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group member Tim Harris highlights some of the avian surprises that could turn up in the local area

T

he RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch takes place between 27 and 29 January.

It’s the world’s biggest survey of birds, with 500,000 people participating in 2017. Taking part is simple: choose a good place to watch from for an hour and count each and every bird you see. If you don’t have a garden, that’s not a problem: just pop down to your local park or green space and join in there. Record what you see on the Big Garden Birdwatch website.

Here are some surprises that could turn up anywhere in the local area – including your back garden.

Great spotted woodpecker If there are any mature trees locally, listen out for the sharp kik call of a great spotted woodpecker. It is quite a common resident of our area and sometimes visits bird feeders. These birds start drumming – the woodpecker equivalent of singing – in early spring.

Winter thrushes Any trees or bushes with berries may attract redwings or fieldfares (pictured), as well as more familiar blackbirds and song thrushes. Redwings and fieldfares are not UK residents but visit from the Continent between October and March. They tend to move around a lot, working their way through a local berry crop before moving on to the next feast.

January 2018 Winter finches A garden with bird feeders is likely to attract tits and finches. As well as our resident blue, great and long-tailed tits, and chaffinches, goldfinches and greenfinches, visitors may include siskins or redpolls (pictured). These small ‘winter finches’ don’t breed locally but may come to our area if food is in short supply elsewhere. They particularly like nyger seeds.

Nuthatch Listen for the ‘liquid’ call of this colourful bird as you walk the Hornbeam Trail, north of Snaresbrook Road in Gilbert’s Slade. Nuthatches breed in this area. They often feed on tree trunks, climbing up and down.

Diving ducks Just south of Snaresbrook Road, Eagle Pond is deep enough to sustain a small population of diving ducks and maybe a great crested grebe or two. Tufted ducks and pochards (pictured) are the two most likely diving ducks to see here.

They visit our area in the winter but don’t breed at the pond.

Little egret Walk the path along the River Roding north or south from Charlie Brown’s Roundabout, carefully checking for the brilliant white of a little egret at the water’s edge or in the river.

A plastic bag or two is likely to create a false alarm before you see the real thing! With a large dose of luck, you may also see the aquamarine flash of a kingfisher speeding down the river. More likely are moorhens and a little grebe or two.

Polluting ourselves to death In the second of a series of articles looking at air pollution, Paul Donovan explains why he believes the car needs to return to the role of servant rather than master if pollution is to be tackled

S

tanding at the point where Blake Hall Road crosses over the M11 link road in Wanstead provides an excellent illustration as to why pollution has grown to the dangerous levels it has today.

I remember the protests against the building of the link road back in the early 1990s. The people living in a tree on George Green and the occupation of the houses on one side of Cambridge Park Road and further on down the route into Leytonstone. The claims of the protesters then was that the transport policy amounted only to building ever more roads – predict and provide. These roads would then fill with cars and cause pollution. The car reigned supreme in those days, public transport ran a very poor second.

Fast forward 25 years to the present day and the predictions of the protesters have come to pass. The link is a very busy stretch of road, often crammed with lines of traffic emitting fumes whilst moving slowly along. Now, the Cambridge Park Road (above the link) is beginning to jam up at rush hour in the way it did 30 years ago when the planners first dreamt up the link road.

And it is the humans living above who have to breathe the polluted air belching forth from this high level of traffic. There are two primary schools and a number of care homes on Cambridge Park, all breathing in those fumes.

Scientific research suggests that living near roads travelled by more than 10,000 vehicles per day could be responsible for some 15–30% of all new cases of asthma in children, and a similar proportion of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease cases in adults 65 years of age and older.

There are some identifiable causes of pollution such as diesel cars, though let’s not forget it was not that long ago that people were being told these vehicles were a good thing. Now, the opposite has been found to be the case.

People with these types of polluting vehicles need to be helped to make the change, not simply penalised.

The move to electric cars will improve the quality of air. It will also cut noise pollution, the bane of many lives on roads like the A406.

The urgency of the situation is such that more draconian measures may need to be taken in the short term, such as restricting the number of cars on the road at any one time.

What is for sure is that action needs to be taken. The car has been a wonderful, liberating invention for people across the world.

However, the car needs to be the servant, not the master, of humankind. Things cannot continue as they are, unless we are happy to go on steadily poisoning ourselves to death.

[Fence_offence] In outlining a recent and costly case fought between neighbours over a right of access issue, Ruhul Ameen of local solicitors Wiseman Lee shows why such disputes are better resolved amicably

F

ailing to resolve disputes amicably with neighbours can be an expensive business, as demonstrated in the case of Dickinson vs Casillas (2017). This case is also a clear example of how the courts will interpret provisions to give effect to the intention of the original parties.

When she moved into her new home, Mrs Casillas had the benefit of specific easements over her neighbour’s house next door. The relevant one was: “To enter… for the purpose of effecting… maintenance repair and decoration of the property… as may with more convenience be dealt with by access from the said adjoining land.” The easement, as originally drawn up by the builders of the property before the construction was even completed, made no reference to the fact that to read the utility meters for her house, it would be necessary for Mrs Casillas to enter Mr and Mrs Dickinson’s property, since her meters were located on the flank wall of her neighbour’s house and could only be accessed via their driveway. The Dickinsons were so determined to exclude Mrs Casillas that they erected a locked gate on the path to their home and attached to it a cast-iron bar with spikes across the top.

Mrs Casillas issued proceedings seeking a declaration of her rights and an injunction to prevent interference with those rights.

At first instance, the learned recorder found in Mrs Casillas’ favour, and referring to the Dickinsons said: “They had not come to court to assist the court in resolving the dispute but to assist themselves.” He was highly critical of the failure of Mr and Mrs Dickinson to engage in any genuine or realistic attempt to settle the case. Ordering them to pay Mrs Casillas’ costs, which were reported to be well over £200,000, the court said this was “an

extraordinarily high figure for a case involving a minor property dispute”.

The Dickinsons appealed. Crucially, the judge at appeal referred to precedent, which allowed him to imply a term into the deed of easement. In the case of Moncrieff vs Jamieson (2007), Lord Neuberger had ruled that “the law will imply a term into a contract, where, in the light of the terms of the contract and the facts known to the parties at the time of the contract, such a term would have been regarded as reasonably necessary or obvious to the parties”. The Appeal Court judge said: “Maintenance, repair and decoration of a house does not obviously include reading its meters.” Nonetheless, he pointed out that having put the meters there, the developer could not have intended that the owner of the neighbouring property would have been unable to read them.

Dismissing the appeal, he went on: “Where most neighbours would have found a sensible solution to the problems that arose between them, Mr and Mrs Dickinson took their stand on what they considered to be their strict legal rights. To their great cost, they were wrong about those rights.”

Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the 19th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Chris Saunders discusses how his preferred subject matter has changed in recent years

last wrote here in July 2015. Since then, my photography has changed and hopefully improved. Whereas in the past I liked to photograph moving things, like a band at a concert or a bike race, I now prefer to take pictures of things that don’t move, like landscapes.

And, instead of recording the scene as I see it, I like to play about by adding things like birds or clouds. I also like to use long exposures to smooth out water and make clouds stretch.

Last summer, I had five pictures on display at Café Chicchi during the Art Trail Wanstead.

They were long exposures taken in Venice.

Venice is ideal for this type of photography because there’s so much water around. I went back there in November on a photography workshop to try to improve my picture-taking.

It’s a fabulous place but it was absolutely freezing while I was there. I did finally get to see ‘acqua alta’ which is when St Mark’s Square floods. That made it all worthwhile. It wasn’t deep, a pair of wellies was enough to get through it, but it makes everything look even more spectacular than it already is.

There’s a small group of us at the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society who try to get out somewhere most weekends to take landscape or wildlife photographs. We tend to stick mostly to Essex, but we have been as far as Norfolk, although that makes rather a long day of it, with a lot of driving. And in the summer, the four of us rented a house in Cornwall for a week for some very different scenery to photograph.

I joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society at the end of 2014.

They’re a very friendly bunch. Every month or so there’s a competition that I find really

useful because the judge will make comments about each picture, suggesting ways in which it could be improved. There are also trips to various places and there’s always someone around to give useful advice.

I would recommend joining a camera club to anyone who’s remotely interested in photography because being with like-minded people will give you encouragement and help.

A Fair point

Wanstead resident Tracey Adebowale-Jones has recently launched Funky Geeky, a stockist of Fairtrade goods. Here, she explains why we should all pay attention to the origins of the things we buy

W

hen people think about Fairtrade, their first thought is often coffee or Oxfam, or in many cases, nothing at all. Should we worry about whether what we buy is Fairtrade or not?

Well, my answer is a simple ‘yes’, because across the world, children, women and men are engaged in the production of goods that denies them a decent wage, a safe working environment and the ability to contribute to the community in which they live. They are effectively slaves in industries that you and I are customers of, and we should want to change this. Put bluntly, Fairtrade means that the price you pay for your goods is the price on the tag, not the price of a human rights violation.

The power to change the world lies not simply in signing an online petition but in actually thinking about the products we buy and where they come from. We do it more and more with the food we eat; the rise in farmers’ markets demonstrates a willingness to buy organic, locally produced food or at least food we know has been reared or produced in an ethical way. So, why not the same with clothes or gifts? Why do we choose to buy a £2 T-shirt when we must know that somewhere the person who sewed that garment can’t possibly be paid a living wage or may be working in conditions that endanger them without any labour rights?

We often hear the phrase ‘sustainable communities’ and Fairtrade enables that sustainability to happen. Where a company purchases their goods from a Fairtradeendorsed source – often local, artisan makers – it means that community is being economically supported; it means people being able to make choices and live dignified

lives; children able to have their childhood and receive an education rather than being forced to work in horrendous conditions.

There is such a huge range of Fairtrade goods available, it just takes a little more effort than it does to walk into a High Street shop and take something off the peg, or choose a ‘Made in China’ present.

Fairtrade goods are unique, often made from recycled materials, handmade and beautiful.

The skill in making these goods is remarkable, and when you buy something with the Fairtrade mark, you know you’re helping to make the world a more decent place for someone, especially when you consider that Human Rights Watch estimate that over 100 million children around the world work in hazardous conditions in agriculture, mining, domestic labour and other sectors.

So, please look for the Fairtrade logo, or simply ask yourself, I wonder who made that?

Photographic 1893-2018

B

y the middle of the 19th century, the science and techniques of photography had advanced to a high standard, and it was a process thought to be of national importance.

The first camera club in the country was Leeds Camera Club, formed in 1852. Following the formation of the Photographic Society in 1853, local societies were established in other big towns and by 1893, some 30 had affiliated to the Photographic Society (which was under royal patronage from 1854 but not known as the Royal Photographic Society until 1894). This affiliation helped to foster the development and interest in photography throughout the United Kingdom.

On 9 October 1893, seven men met at the Coffee Tavern adjoining George Lane railway station (now South Woodford station) to pass a set of rules and to declare the aims and objectives of the Woodford Photographic Society (the Wanstead associations would follow in later years). The seven men were Henry T Malby, H Wilmer, Edward B Caird, Henry W Bennett, F W Elliot, W Smith and Henry Crouch. All were skilled photographers.

This meeting could not have been a sudden affair; the magnet that drew them together

was their common interest. But how did they get to know each other? At that time, Henry Malby, who lived in Chelmsford Road, had earned a national reputation as a professional for his unique collection of photographs of plants and flowers, which were highly valued by the members of the Royal Horticultural Society. H Wilmer and Henry Crouch lived in Grove Hill, Edward Caird in Grove Road, and F W Elliott in Higham Road. It may well be that as they all lived in close proximity to Henry Malby they gradually became acquainted, and so in the tiny ‘village’ of St Mary’s, the seed was sown for the Woodford Photographic Society.

They decided to hold meetings on the first and third Thursday of each month and charge an annual subscription of half a guinea (10/6).

H Wilmer was elected president for the year, Henry Bennett became both secretary and treasurer and Messrs Malby, Caird and Crouch were elected members of the council.

The group declared its main aim to be “the advancement of photography, technically and artistically”.

Its second aim was for the society to take its place amongst the foremost in the kingdom. This it achieved in the early years.

Competition in the affiliation contests of the Royal Photographic Society was intensely keen and attracted work from all over the country. The system employed evaluated scores to the third decimal place. Plaques were awarded for the best individual efforts, while the team efforts were awarded the first three places. Where fractions only separated the leaders, the records give ample evidence of Woodford’s successes.

A third aim was a desire to do something of value for the community. This was the reason for the photographic survey of the Ancient Parish of Woodford organised by Francis Emler in 1901–1905. This record is now known as the

Emler Collection and is recognised to be of historic value.

At one of the first meetings, on 19 October 1893, club president H Wilmer said: “There is no apostolic succession in photography – the only road to success must be through failures, which should never discourage, but be valued for the lessons they teach.”

e invest in all sorts of things: our homes, vehicles, education and even experiences, but do we invest in our marriages or is marriage no longer worth investing in?

How did you meet? Why did you decide to marry your partner? Memories filled with joy and laughter fill our minds with these simple questions. Nevertheless, relying solely on first encounters or past moments does not provide a resilient foundation for ensuring your marriage is ‘successful’. There are many unanticipated circumstances that can destroy your love and commitment to each other.

So, how are you investing in your marriage?

Have you both made a commitment to each other and now just go along with the flow?

Do you make time for each other and support each other like you once did? Marriages tend to go through the following stages.

1. Euphoria: the early days, when everything is great; the wedding day, the honeymoon, moving into your first marital home, going out to dinner, having regular sex.

2. Exhaustion: children arrive! There’s now tiredness from lack of sleep and you’re both learning on-the-job parenting skills.

3. Enticement: neither of you have had much time to invest in yourselves, let alone each other. Compliments, praise and thanks are few and far between.

4. Explosion: allegations, denials, lies and half-truths are spoken. Will your love be enough? Counselling and mediation are

talked about, which is better than expensive lawyers and having to sell the house.

5. Endurance: remember your vows. Hang in there, talk, forgive quickly and refuse to give up. The children are growing up, you have family time and you’re a lot better at sex.

6. Entropy: adult children! But they still depend on you and can’t really afford to move out. In parallel, your own parents are ageing and need your support.

7. Enlightenment: adult children are ‘settled’.

You get to enjoy your grandchildren and take great pleasure in handing them back. Some rewards for staying together: having someone in sickness and in health, affection, companionship and mutual respect.

So, no matter what stage your marriage is at, if things are good or not so good, it may be time to invest.

In the first of a series of articles, local travel advisor Jack Leaf offers his destination suggestions for the year ahead, including South Africa, Ibiza and a new, luxury, all-inclusive hotel in Corfu

A

t this time of the year, when you are planning your holiday schedule for 2018, allow me – as an independent travel agent with 25 years of experience – to help you with some ideas.

The inauguration of the British Airways flight to Mahé at the end of March heralds the first direct flight to the Seychelles in over a decade, and I am certain it will prove to be a top destination in the coming year. The Seychelles is just seven degrees south of the equator, so the temperature is around 30°C all year round, with a mixture of sunshine and tropical showers. The region enjoys a beautiful climate all year and sea breezes can deal with much of the humidity.

I went to the new Nobu Ibiza Hotel in August 2017 and feel sure it’ll be very popular for admirers of fine food in a design hotel environment. The charm of Ibiza old town is within walking distance. Don’t think the mad clubbing of San Antonio Town; think chic and sophisticated, topped with exemplary service.

I flew from London City Airport, so the entire door-to-door journey was hassle-free.

South Africa continues to be much in demand, and with the pound weak against the rand, it’s great to see we still get a good exchange rate of 18 rand to the pound. I’m looking forward to joining a group of travel agents at the end of May to see what’s new in Cape Town and along the Garden Route. The life of a travel agent is hard but it has to be done! Of course, the safari experience in South Africa remains second to none, and several regions are malaria free.

For those of you who enjoy a spa break or wine-tasting closer to home, I went to Le Sources de Caudalie, just outside of

Bordeaux, last October and it was marvellous: luxurious accommodation in beautiful grounds, cycling to local wineries and even time in 48 hours to enjoy an electric tuk-tuk tour of Bordeaux city centre.

The best new hotel for summer family holidays is undoubtedly going to be the Ikos Dassia Resort, opening in May. It will be a luxury, five-star, all-inclusive resort on the Greek island of Corfu. Even those of you not keen on all-inclusive, this is going to be luxury all-inclusive, you really can’t go wrong.

Finally, it’s not too early to be thinking about your next Christmas or New Year holiday. In fact, early-bookers reap the greatest benefits these days. For guaranteed hot weather, I’ll be packing you off to the Caribbean or Far East, but for the real winter Christmas experience, how about dog-sleighing to see Santa in Finland or quad biking to the Northern Lights in Iceland?

I

n 2004, whilst working at Harrods, I was producing coloured pencil drawings of various fruits.

On my way home from the shop one evening on the 74 bus via Marble Arch, I popped into Selfridges and went into the basement where there used to be a gallery called Inside Space. I showed the lady staff member my portfolio of drawings.

Unfortunately, she was not interested. On a whim, I had also tucked into the portfolio some photos of abstract oil paintings measuring about three feet by four feet that I was producing in my garden shed at the time. These she liked a lot, and I was invited to show some of my original oils to the gallery’s owner in Newport Street, where they had another outlet.

The owner liked them and I was asked to bring some paintings to Selfridges to put on sale.

So, I would travel on the Tube and take a painting to Selfridges in the morning or on my

way home.

I m pleased to say I sold five paintings in all for £360 each, the gallery taking 70%! One was even used in a window display on Oxford Street.

Unfortunately, my work was selling but no one else’s was, and much to my dismay, the gallery closed at the end of the year.

I chose to paint the house shown here as it is one I have admired for all the 30 years I have lived here. The house stands at the end of St Mary’s Avenue, adjacent to the green, and is like no other house in Wanstead.

The owner has purchased one of my jigsaws and I was able to hand deliver it, with the added bonus that I got to see inside the property as well, which did not disappoint.

What changes in dentistry have you seen during the last 35 years?

The greatest difference has been in attitudes and expectations – people are now more conscious about their health and looks. And advances in materials and technology mean dentists can now do much more for patients.

How do you react to patients who have neglected their teeth?

I help every patient as much as I can. I like to find out the whole picture because sometimes teeth have been affected by general ill-health or stress. If patients feel embarrassed, I try to make them more comfortable.

What is the most satisfying element of your work?

Taking someone whose mouth has been compromised in some way, bringing their teeth and gums back to full health and seeing them permanently out of pain, and confident.

That may sound corny, but it’s true!

Who do you most admire?

Dr John Kois, who runs the prestigious Kois Centre in Seattle. They offer advanced training for dentists from all over the world in finding the best ways to help patients keep their teeth for longer. The Kois philosophy is to base every decision on the latest scientific knowledge.

I am proud to have become a Kois Mentor, helping to keep other dentists up to date.

Do you recommend dentistry as a career?

Yes! It’s a very rewarding career in helping people, and it’s always fascinating. In over 30

years, I have helped motivate and train several dentists, some of whom have since gone on to specialist clinical roles.

If you had not trained as a dentist, is there another career you might have enjoyed?

The antiques world appeals, but I know I’d never sell much because I’d have trouble parting with things! Otherwise, I’d like to be an architect. I am interested in old buildings.

What are your leisure interests?

Travel, theatre, and beekeeping, which I am learning from a patient. I’m interested in the important role bees have in our lives.

What is your favourite music?

[Short pause] I’m trying to decide whether to admit I like ABBA or not! I like a wide variety, from Fleetwood Mac to Adele. Also classical music – Classic FM on Sunday mornings.

What is your favourite film?

The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. It teaches integrity and honour. Both are important in my own life.

Backing the bid As we wait to see how Redbridge has fared in its bid to be the London Borough of Culture, Steve Wilks showcases the work of Vision RCL, which provides leisure and cultural facilities on behalf of the council

R

edbridge Council officially launched its bid to become the first London Borough of Culture in October and submitted its entry in December last year.

This Is Redbridge launched at Redbridge Drama Centre, with councillors, artists and community representatives urging the borough to get behind the bid to win the Mayor of London’s prize of a million pounds to stage a programme of world-class events.

Two winning boroughs will be named London Borough of Culture (for 2019 and 2020).

Redbridge is a diverse borough and has so many hidden gems. Vision RCL is pleased to be able to support the bid process and looks optimistically to a successful outcome.

As we await the results – to be announced in February – it is important to look at past successes of Vision RCL, which illustrate why Redbridge should be in a strong position.

The annual Fabula Festival takes place in October and is a celebration of libraries and the arts. Last year, the festival was launched with sold-out events at Fullwell Cross Library and Wanstead Library. There were also over 7,000 visitors to the festival’s main weekend programme at Redbridge Central Library.

In November and December, Redbridge Drama Centre in South Woodford enjoyed the longest run of its Christmas show, The Christmas Tale of the Pied Piper, with 36 performances for schools. It was also their first Christmas show with live music.

Playing With Fire is a social media play, which aims to tour all Redbridge schools in 2018.

This project is supported by the Redbridge Safeguarding Board, aiming to combine culture with safety issues.

Fabula Festival 2017 at Wanstead Library

Redbridge Music Service is preparing for the biannual Redbridge Choral Festival in March, showcasing the talent of young musicians in the borough. This year’s festival will recognise a number of celebrations and commemorations that will take place during the year.

A good example of where the Redbridge Museum and Heritage Service works in close partnership to support communitybased organisations is Ilford Football Club.

In partnership with Redbridge Museum, it has been awarded £48,400 by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The grant will fund various strands of work, including a partnership with Redbridge College around oral history and the digitisation of the club’s archives.

It is clear to see that Vision RCL has been proactive in delivering a diverse offering of activities and leisure services across the borough. Hopefully, with a successful outcome from the bid, we can continue to build on this to deliver even more and really show people that This is Redbridge.

Redbridge CND members were turned away when they tried to deliver a letter about the Korean crisis to the American embassy last year.

Would you like to join them for a second attempt, asks Nigel Norman?

I

n 1951 peace activist Monica Felton went to North Korea. She was part of a delegation that went to observe the effects of the Korean War (25 June 1950 – 27 July 1953) on the people that lived there.

She felt this was important as people in Britain were being kept in the dark about the course and conduct of the war. What they found was a country that had been totally destroyed by aerial bombing. This included the use of new ‘wonder weapons’ – napalm and biological weapons – on the civilian population.

During the Korean War, General Douglas MacArthur suggested the use of 25 nuclear weapons to “take care” of the North Korean and Chinese forces. The threat of atomic bombs was used to drive the civilian population to the south. The war left millions dead (one in nine of the population), misery and a mass of refugees.

The North Koreans have not forgotten this and it partly explains their drive to acquire their own nuclear weapons for their defence.

It is a tiny country with the GDP of Malawi and maybe 10 to 20 nuclear warheads versus the massive military machine of the United States with its triad of nuclear forces (land, sea and air) and over 7,000 nuclear weapons.

They have also observed US-led attempts at regime change in the Middle East and what happened to Libya when they abandoned their nuclear programme.

At the end of November 2017, a public meeting was held in Ilford Library to discuss the present, extremely dangerous world situation.

Speakers from Stop the War and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) stressed the risks of events spinning out of control. A war would lead to casualties in the millions.

Nuclear weapons can kill on a vast scale, as we saw from Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The longer term effects may be extensive radiation poisoning across continents and famine due to climate changes. The present Commanderin-Chief of US nuclear forces (President Trump) is unpredictable, (possibly) unstable and prone to violent rhetoric, which has led to real fear among people the world over.

The situation is not without hope, however.

The United Nations adopted a treaty banning nuclear weapons in July 2017 and 122 countries voted in favour (the UK government refused to participate).

When our CND group knocked on the door of the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square last summer to deliver a letter expressing our concerns, we were turned away. So, at our November meeting, I suggested the people of Wanstead and Ilford could deliver their own letter to the Americans, and I would like to put together a small delegation to do just that. better way to relax

Steve Wilks looks at mindfulness meditation as a way to relieve and ease the strains of a busy metropolitan lifestyle, and highlights the overall importance of relaxation

A

s a busy man about town with a demanding job and competing claims on my time, relaxation time was often seen as a luxury for me. One day, I realised after a bout of illness that it is an important part of our wellbeing.

For many of us, relaxation means vegging out in front of the TV at the end of a stressful day.

However, this does not address the root cause and does little to reduce the damaging effects of stress.

When stress overwhelms your nervous system, your body is flooded with chemicals from the adrenal glands that prepare you for ‘fight or flight’. This stress response can be lifesaving in emergency situations. But when it is constantly activated by the stresses of everyday life, it can wear your body down and take a toll on your emotional health.

No one can avoid all stress (indeed, some stress is good for you), but you can counteract detrimental effects by learning how to produce the relaxation response: a state of deep rest that is the polar opposite of the stress response, helping to heal your body.

When the relaxation response is activated, your heart rate slows down, your breathing becomes slower and deeper, your blood pressure drops or stabilises, your muscles relax and blood flow to the brain increases.

You achieve this by practicing various relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Fitting these activities into your life can help reduce everyday stress, boost your energy and mood and improve your mental and physical health. Simply laying on the couch – while sometimes relaxing – is not going to produce the physical and psychological benefits of the relaxation response. For that, you will need to actively

practice a relaxation technique. The one I favour is mindfulness meditation.

Rather than worrying about the future or dwelling on the past, mindfulness meditation switches the focus to what is happening right now, enabling you to be fully engaged in the present moment. Here is a basic exercise I would recommend to start off with: 1. Sit on a chair or cross-legged on the floor.

2. Focus on an aspect of your breathing, such as the sensation of flowing air.

3. Once you have narrowed your concentration, begin to widen your focus.

Become aware of sensations and thoughts.

4. Embrace and consider each thought or sensation without judging it good or bad.

If your mind starts to race, return your focus to your breathing. Then expand your awareness again.

Take time to try this technique and you may be pleasantly surprised.
