A big birthday to a traveller means only one thing: a big trip. Having explored six continents already, there was one left to discover: Antarctica. After failing to get there twice due to COVID-19-related issues, I was eager to succeed. I bagged a deal on a new cruise sailing from Ushuaia, packed my bags and tried to wade through the many rules and regs. For those daunted by this, my advice is to keep at it. The Government website (www.gov.uk) was excellent in advising what forms had to be filled in, and provided links to them. It was straightforward and updated often, whereas the cruise company

wasn’t so useful – probably due to dealing with so many nationalities, meaning the onus was on us. There was frustration over sourcing the cost for various tests, and my language skills were examined when Argentina’s mandatory health form hesitated in giving me an English version. Some of it refused to translate, so I had to ask for help from a fellow passenger. But the point is that it was worth it. The more obstacles thrown in my path, the more determined I was to fulfil my dream. And having survived two days crossing the Drake Passage, the sight of penguins greeting me was reward for every inconvenience. Alex Hinton, via email

“[My favourite place to see wildlife is] Londolozi Concession, Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa. Second would be the polar regions, namely South Georgia Island and Svalbard.
