“WE’RE HAPPY TO SEE THE TOWN BEING IMPROVED”: GRIMSBY BUSINESSES AT LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW THRILLED TO SEE

NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE GROW

A range of North East Lincolnshire organisations and businesses were flying the flag for the borough at this year’s Lincolnshire Show.

From Orsted championing renewables to Nunny’s Farm exhibiting some of their wonderful animals, there really was plenty to see. Whilst these organisations continue to grow and build, so too does Grimsby.

Regeneration continues in the town centre and these businesses are proud to see the benefits it brings. For Stevensons Furniture of Grimsby Road, any improvement for the area is good news.

The family run business opened in 1979 and has been helping families for decades since. Georgia Redding, of Stevensons, said: “We’re a local family run business and have been going from strength to strength.

“The show has been great for us and we’ve seen loads of old and new faces, we’re pleased to be representing North East Lincolnshire while we’re here too.”

Speaking about improvements around Grimsby, she added: “It’s great to see money being put into places like the Port of Grimsby and the rest of town. Anything that goes towards improving Grimsby is a positive.”

Improvements on the Port have partly come under the emergence of the Humber renewables sector,

and the profile that brings to the region, provides an immediate opportunity to deliver wider benefits for our community. The Council has a key role in enabling and delivering this agenda and ensuring those benefits are realised locally.

We’re open for business in North East Lincolnshire. We’ve ambitious plans to make the Humber, and Grimsby in particular, the UK capital of the renewable energy industry and deliver a low carbon economy and community, becoming less reliant on traditional sources of energy.

As part of that, we’re continuing to promote the importance of engaging beyond our boundaries and bringing influence to bear in the interests of promoting investment and confidence in the area.

Also at the show was Neil Campbell and Joanna Holbrook-Morris, of Nunny’s Farm. Displaying a range of animals with a hands on experience, their stall was incredibly popular with visitors to the show.

“We’ve been really busy and it’s been great to offer the hands on experience to people. Everyone seems to have enjoyed what we’re doing and it mirrors what we’re all about.

“We believe this can benefit people’s mental

health which is one of our great passions and we want to do as much as we can to help those who may be struggling,” said Neil.

Another passion of the farm is Grimsby. “We’re proud to be from Grimsby,” added Neil.

“We’re thrilled to be representing the area and the response to what we do here has been amazing and hopefully that can bring people into North East Lincolnshire.

Speaking about the continuing improvements in the town centre, fellow owner, Joanna HolbrookMorris, added: “When we set the farm up, we knew it was for the long term. We’re striving for a better future and it’s great to see what’s happening.

“It’s a real positive that the farm is part of this and we think it’s going to be a bright future for everyone in the area.”

With its mix of countryside, coast, history and family-friendly attractions, there’s something to suit every interest and age group — whether you’re exploring with the kids, catching up with friends or just enjoying a solo adventure.

It’s a real highlight in the local calendar and a reminder of the strong community spirit and rural heritage that Lincolnshire is so proud of.

But even beyond the show, the county is packed with things to see and do. Grimsthorpe Castle, near Bourne, is a great example — a stunning historic house set in beautiful parkland, with a regular programme of events throughout the summer. From car shows and open-air

RECORD-BREAKING LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

CELEBRATED GLORIOUS SUNSHINE, STAR APPEARANCES AND SOARING VISITOR NUMBERS

The Lincolnshire Show returned on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 June with record-breaking success, welcoming over 61,000 visitors to the Lincolnshire Showground – the highest attendance in 15 years – for two spectacular days of farming, food, family fun, and community celebration. The event is proudly hosted by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, a registered charity dedicated to promoting food, farming, and the countryside.

Basking under glorious sunshine and soaring temperatures, this year’s Show saw the highest number of cars in the car parks, a clear indication of its growing popularity and importance as a flagship event in the county calendar.

This year’s Show was packed with memorable moments, including a special visit from HRH The Princess Royal, who spent time meeting with local breeders, Chief Stewards, exhibitors, LAS Trustees and members of the farming community, highlighting the vital role agriculture plays in the life of the county.

Crowds were also delighted by the return

appeared in the Countryside Ring and spent time chatting with families and fans, sharing his passion for rural life and the countryside. The Show also welcomed Harriet Cowan from Clarkson’s Farm and current Miss Lincolnshire, Mary Anna Jennings.

The Main Ring delivered a fresh dose of adrenaline with the Knights of Middle England, whose thrilling jousting displays and horseback stunts made their debut appearance and left audiences cheering for more.

of Matt Baker MBE, who

Agriculture remained firmly at the heart of the event. Despite current disease concerns, the cattle lines were full with over 220 cattle, 500+ sheep entries, and an ever-growing pig competition. The Lincolnshire Fleece Competition grew by more than 40%, while nearly 1,400 horses competed in a range of classes from Horse of the Year Show qualifiers to the crowd-favourite Shetland Pony Grand National, showcasing the exceptional quality and care of local breeders and farmers.

New and returning features across the Showground added to the buzz:

A beach installation offered a relaxing, sandy escape for families – a popular hit in the sunshine.

The much-loved Farriers Area returned, bringing the traditional craft of horseshoeing to life with live competitions spanning over the two days.

The brand new Rural Voices stage gave a platform to inspiring stories from the countryside, with talks from rural changemakers, farmers, and young people shaping the future of agriculture.

An action packed Countryside Ring, with a full timetable throughout the days including Trickstars and the Hawkeye Falconry and so much more.

This year’s winner of the Hugh Bourn Trophy for Best Overall Trade Stand was the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC), recognised for their outstanding display, customer engagement and innovation. The NFYFC are proudly celebrating their 50th year.

The Witham Cup, awarded to the runnerup, went to Peacock and Binnington, longstanding supporters of the Lincolnshire Show, who also celebrated their 140th anniversary in 2024.

Nearly 70 schools took part in this year’s Schools’ Challenge, competing across ten different categories. Winners included St Peter at Gowts Church of England Primary School and Queen Elizabeth High School in the Secondary section.

The Show also hosted the 2025 Marshal Papworth scholars on Wednesday, welcoming a delegation of students from across Africa who are currently studying agriculture in the UK. The visit formed part of their ongoing programme to explore sustainable farming practices and global agricultural innovation. During their time at the Show, the scholars had the opportunity to engage with UK farmers, industry experts, and exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge agricultural technologies. From advanced machinery to innovations in livestock management, the experience provided valuable insight into the systems driving efficiency and productivity on British farms.

Charlotte Powell, CEO of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, said:

“This year’s Show has been a phenomenal success. From the glorious weather and incredible visitor numbers to the warm welcome we received from HRH

The Princess Royal and Matt Baker MBE – it’s been a true celebration of everything Lincolnshire has to offer. The feedback from visitors and exhibitors has been fantastic, and

we’re so proud of our team and volunteers for delivering such a joyful, inspiring event.”

The 140th Lincolnshire Show also marked a significant moment for Andrew Read, who is retiring as Show Director after years of dedicated service. Andrew said:

“It’s been an honour to serve as Show Director, and I couldn’t have wished for a better way to sign off. Celebrating the 140th Show in beautiful sunshine, surrounded by smiling faces and a record-breaking crowd, was a real privilege. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and I’m excited to watch the Show continue to flourish in years to come.”

Planning is already underway for the 2026 Lincolnshire Show, promising even more celebration, innovation and fun for all the family.

HOLIDAY-READY

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS FOR UK BREAKS AND WEEKEND ESCAPES

Whether you’re planning a coastal weekend, a countryside retreat or a last-minute city break, packing smart is the secret to stress-free summer travel.

With unpredictable weather and a mix of outdoor adventures and cosy evenings in, UK getaways call for a thoughtful but versatile approach. Here’s how to pack light, travel well, and enjoy every moment.

LAYERED LOOKS THAT WORK HARD

UK weather in July can go from sunny and hot to breezy and damp in the space of an afternoon. Think layers: a lightweight waterproof jacket, soft knits for cooler evenings, and easy-to-style pieces like a cotton shirt dress, linen trousers, or a classic Breton top. A pair of comfortable walking shoes or sandals are essential — especially if you’re planning beach walks or countryside rambles. A wide-brimmed hat and a pair of sunglasses will also serve you well, whether you’re at the coast or exploring a local village market.

BEAUTY IN MINIATURE

Save space and avoid spills by decanting your favourite skincare and toiletries into travel-sized containers. Many British brands now offer eco-conscious minis or solid alternatives, from shampoo bars to

cleansing sticks. Don’t forget SPF, a refreshing face mist, and a multi-use balm for lips, hands and cuticles. For a touch of indulgence, slip in a small fragrance or a hydrating sheet mask — perfect for reviving skin after a long day in the sun or wind.

ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL AGES

If you’re travelling with children, a small stash of games, puzzles, and books can make all the difference. Travel-sized versions of classics like Uno or magnetic board games are great for rainy days or long car journeys. For adults, a good summer read is a must — from feel-good fiction to page-turning thrillers. Audiobooks and playlists are also perfect for winding down or filling quiet moments, especially during scenic drives.

THE PERFECT CARRYALL

A roomy, soft-sided weekend bag or sturdy backpack will see you through most short trips. Look for one with multiple compartments to keep chargers, snacks and passports accessible. Foldaway totes are handy for shopping or impromptu beach stops, and a waterproof pouch is ideal for keeping wet swimwear or muddy shoes separate.

EXTRAS WORTH INCLUDING

Reusable water bottles, a compact picnic blanket, sunglasses, insect repellent and a lightweight towel

often come in handy — especially if you’re heading off the beaten path. And for an added touch of home comfort? A familiar pillowcase, a good cup of tea, or a small travel candle can make even a simple B&B feel like a relaxing retreat.

With a little forward planning, your UK escape can be as refreshing as a trip abroad — minus the airport queues and jet lag. Just throw in a sense of adventure, pack your favourite creature comforts, leave room for souvenirs, and enjoy the freedom of the open road.

SUMMER STYLE

REFRESH YOUR WARDROBE AND HOME THIS JULY

As the sun finally makes its return and social calendars begin to fill up, July is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe and add some seasonal touches to your home.

From lightweight linens and bold accessories to bright homeware and garden décor, summer shopping doesn’t have to mean heading to the big city or browsing endless online baskets.

Across Lincolnshire, a growing number of shoppers are rediscovering the joy of buying local. From high streets and market towns to refurbished precincts and retail courtyards, there’s a wealth of stylish, welcoming spaces to browse. Many now offer a great blend of big-name favourites and smaller independent businesses, making them perfect for a spontaneous afternoon out.

SUMMER WARDROBE REFRESH

July calls for effortless style: think cotton shirts, wide-leg trousers, wrap dresses, and woven bags. Many independent fashion retailers stock beautiful pieces from smaller UK brands, and some even work with local makers to offer limited-run designs you won’t find elsewhere. Whether you’re off to a garden party, heading to the coast, or simply enjoying the long evenings outdoors, now’s the time to embrace a lighter, brighter look.

Footwear shops are also starting to focus on comfort as well as style – think espadrilles, soft leather sandals and supportive slip-ons.

It’s all about choosing pieces that work for days out, holidays, and relaxed summer evenings at home.

HOME AND GARDEN TOUCHES

Seasonal retail isn’t just about fashion. Small home and gift shops are full of cheerful additions – from striped cushions and bamboo lanterns for the patio, to citrus-scented candles and botanical prints that bring a burst of summer indoors. Look out for handmade ceramics, locally printed textiles, and colourful glassware perfect for alfresco drinks.

Some of Lincolnshire’s retail hubs have also begun hosting weekend craft stalls and pop-up events, giving shoppers the chance to meet local artisans and pick up one-of-a-kind finds while enjoying a lively summer atmosphere. It’s a lovely way to spend a Saturday — especially when paired with coffee, cake, and a wander through nearby boutiques.

MINDFUL SPENDING

It’s easy to get swept up in summer sales, but this season is also a great time to shop mindfully. Pick pieces you’ll wear or use again and again, and consider supporting local producers when choosing gifts or home accessories. Not only does it reduce the carbon footprint, but you’re also more likely to discover something with real character.

So, whether you’re browsing a hidden gem in a market town or spending the day at one of the county’s revitalised retail spots, July is a month for celebrating style, sunshine, and the joy of finding something right on your doorstep.

TOM SEARLES

Tom Searles is a Portrait Painter based in London and the Cotswolds.

After completing his bachelor’s degree in Illustration at the Anglia Ruskin University in 2012, Tom embarked on his freelance portraiture career, showcasing his fine art skills in galleries internationally. Parallel to this, Tom co-founded his own textile print company, comfortably straddling the visual disciplines of illustration and graphic design as Art Director and Creative Producer.

Inspired by the imaginative work of both his paternal grandfather and father, Tom began drawing from an early age, recreating imagery from his favourite classic comic books while harnessing his own unique style.

For Tom, sports played an integral role in shaping his upbringing. From a young age, he immersed himself in the world of rugby and cricket, dedicating countless hours to training and honing his skills in both disciplines. His passion and talent were evident as he excelled in these sports, earning a place in the youth representative teams. Through the highs and lows of his sporting journey, Tom learned invaluable life lessons, making sport an inseparable part of his identity and character, which is often reflected in his work.

Specialising in acrylic and charcoal, Tom now offers bespoke, custom portrait commissions capturing the subject’s characteristics in an abstract light and with intriguing detail. Heavily influenced by his background in sport, and using varied brushstrokes and tools, his powerfully cinematic, painterly works capture the continuous movement of any scene or subject.

Continually pushing his technique further, Tom draws upon the golden age of music and cinema with gentle influences of subdued, muted palettes to create his striking compositions.

eye-light®

O’Brien’s newly acquired eye-light® system is the latest thoroughly researched treatment for Dry Age-related Macular Disease

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the developed world. It predominantly affects individuals aged 60 and above. Estimates suggest that nearly 50 million people worldwide are affected by AMD. AMD is a

progressive eye disease that irreversibly impairs vision by damaging part of the retina, the light-sensitive area at the back of the eye. It is characterised by the gradual accumulation of drusen—tiny yellow or white deposits under the retina. Your optometrist can see the drusen when closely examining your eyes.

The eye-light uses yellow light (590 nm wavelength) which naturally inhibits the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This signalling protein stimulates the formation of blood vessels, which contributes to the development of the wet form of AMD.

The eye-light uses red light (630nm wavelength) to promote electron transfer and oxygen binding, restoring mitochondrial function and increasing metabolic activity (i.e. energy production) and inhibiting inflammatory events and cell death.

If you have Dry AMD, please get in touch with our team to learn all about our eye-light and Valeda treatments. You can phone us or you can call in to book an early appointment or a preliminary consultation.

In 2022, O’Brien’s began to use Valeda light therapy for the treatment of Dry Age-related Macular Disease (Dry AMD). The system rapidly proved its worth, and many of our treated patients have been in touch to let us know how much their day-to-day lives have been enhanced.

Do you suffer from Dry Age-related Macular Disease?

Having treated Dry Age-related Macular Disease since 2022, O’Brien’s have become specialists in improving the sight of sufferers.

In addition to our well established Valeda therapy, we can now offer the new eye-light® therapy. Both therapies have been shown to improve sharpness of vision and to slow down the progression of the disease.

This breakthrough treatment is known as photobiomodulation (PBM) using a device called Valeda. It uses light to stimulate the centre of vision by energising and encouraging the production of oxygen for cell repair and has been used extensively by ophthalmologists and optometrists across the UK, Europe, and around the world.

Results from extensive monitored trials of the therapy show that for many Dry AMD sufferers, there can be an improvement in sharpness of vision and the latest study from the LIGHTSITE III Clinical Trials showed over 67% of patients gained five or more letters on the sight chart, and over 20% gained 10 or more letters! Data from the 24-month analysis showed significant improvements in binocular visual acuity which were sustained throughout the study.

BRIDAL AND GROOM WELLNESS

EXPERT ADVICE FROM COACH JAKE MCARTHUR

Feel confident, energised, and proud on your wedding day with real-life fitness and nutrition guidance from one of the UK’s most trusted transformation coaches.

There’s a moment in every wedding journey when the excitement collides with reality. You’re picturing the dress, the suit, the aisle… and then wondering if you’ll feel your absolute best when the big day finally arrives.

It’s not about chasing an impossible standard. It’s about standing tall, energised, and proud. And that, according to leading wedding wellness coach Jake McArthur, comes down to two things: realistic planning and self-respectful choices.

“Looking and feeling your best on your wedding day should never be treated like an optional luxury,” Jake says. “It’s fundamental. Everything — your mood, your confidence, your energy — starts with how you feel in your own skin.”

Jake and his coaching partner George Woolliss specialise in helping brides and grooms feel incredible on their big day — through sustainable fitness, no-fuss nutrition, and mindset support that sticks long after the honeymoon ends. This is their ultimate guide to doing it right.

WHY WEDDING WELLNESS SHOULDN’T BE A LAST-MINUTE PANIC

It’s easy to let fitness and nutrition slip to the bottom of the to-do list when you’re juggling RSVPs, florists, and finances. But Jake believes it deserves better:

“You spend so much time and money planning a perfect event. Why wouldn’t you invest in how you feel during it?”

And this isn’t about fitting into a smaller dress or losing weight for photos. It’s about the energy to enjoy every second. The clarity to be present. The confidence to walk in front of a crowd feeling proud. George puts it perfectly:

“Weddings are emotional. And when people feel good physically, they’re calmer, more grounded, and genuinely happier. That’s what we care about. It’s not a better body, it’s a better you.”

THE FITNESS PLAN: MOVEMENT THAT FITS YOUR LIFE

Let’s be honest: most wedding fitness plans are unrealistic. They demand daily workouts, strict routines, and hours you simply don’t have. Jake’s approach is refreshingly practical.

“Three workouts a week. That’s what we ask for. Upper body, lower body, core and cardio. Done right, that’s enough to look stronger, leaner, and in a better shape.”

You don’t need a gym membership. Bodyweight exercises, a pair of dumbbells, and a mat are more than enough.

What matters most? Consistency.

“We don’t need you to do more. We need you to do what you said you would. That’s how results happen,” says Jake.

George works with grooms who are often new to fitness or juggling busy careers and family life.

“We meet you where you are. If you’ve only got 45 minutes three times a week — we make those 45 minutes count.”

THE NUTRITION SHIFT: FUEL YOUR BODY, DON’T PUNISH IT

Forget bland salads and starvation plans. Jake’s philosophy around nutrition is based on awareness, not restriction.

“The reason most people struggle is that they’re either eating too much — without realising it — or they’re eating the wrong things for how they want to feel.”

He encourages couples to track their intake using simple apps like MyFitnessPal. Not obsessively — just enough to build awareness of what’s going on.

“We’re not telling you never to have wine or cake,” Jake clarifies. “But you do need to know how those things affect your goals. And make your choices from there.”

Simple steps with big impact:

• Prioritise lean protein (chicken, fish, fish and protein shakes)

• Eat more fruit and veg and cut out what you know to be junk

• Stay hydrated — especially in the final weeks

And yes, the night before the wedding matters.

“You don’t want to wake up bloated or tired,” Jake warns. “Keep it light, familiar,

and nourishing. Grilled chicken, steamed veg, fruit. Avoid anything that’s ever upset your stomach.”

In the morning itself?

“Fruit is perfect. Light, hydrating, and it won’t sit heavy in your gut while the nerves kick in.”

MOTIVATION VS. MINDSET: THE SECRET INGREDIENT

Jake and George both agree: motivation is overrated. What you need is discipline and the right mindset — something they focus on heavily in their coaching.

“People don’t fail because they don’t want it. They fail because they don’t have the tools or accountability to stick with it,” Jake explains.

George says the wedding deadline actually helps:

“It’s a date you can’t move. That creates clarity. But we help couples use that deadline to create momentum, not pressure.”

The result? A habit, not a phase. A mindset that says: this isn’t a diet. This is how I take care of myself.

REAL RESULTS FROM REAL COUPLES

Some of Jake and George’s proudest transformations aren’t just visible — they’re emotional.

Take Josh and El, who trained for their Greek island wedding.

“Josh had tried every diet under the sun. When he came to us, we stripped it back to the basics. He dropped 16kg, built lean muscle, and gained confidence he’d never had,” says George. “El looked stunning too. But more importantly, they were glowing. You could see how proud they were of each other.”

Then there’s Paul and Sonia Tomlinson — a farmer and a teacher with crazy schedules.

“They looked spectacular on the day — but what really stuck with me was how happy they were. They weren’t stressed. They weren’t tired. They were just in their element,” George recalls. “And they’re still training now, still building on it. That’s the point.” >>>

Continued from page 19...

WHAT IF YOU’RE ON A TIGHT BUDGET?

The good news? You can absolutely make progress without spending a fortune.

“Tracking your food? Free. Walking every day? Free. Training at home with your own body? Free,” says Jake. “You don’t need a fancy gym membership. But what you do need is commitment.”

Of course, coaching helps — and Jake’s programme is priced to be affordable for couples who want structure and accountability without financial strain.

“We keep it at a point where it’s enough that you won’t want to waste it, but not so much that it causes stress,” he explains. “People pay to commit. That’s often the breakthrough.”

AFTER THE WEDDING: THE REAL TRANSFORMATION

Too many couples fall into a slump postwedding — but Jake’s clients don’t.

“We book a redirection call after the honeymoon. That’s when we set new goals, adjust routines, and help them turn the wedding progress into a lifelong habit,” he says.

George adds:

“Why would you want to feel amazing for one day — and then let it all slip away? The confidence you build can carry you through marriage, parenthood, career… all of it.”

FINAL THOUGHT: YOU DESERVE TO FEEL INCREDIBLE

Looking after your health — your real, honest, everyday wellbeing — should

never be an afterthought. It should be an act of self-respect.

As Jake puts it: “People don’t regret putting the effort in. They regret the opposite. And when you walk down that aisle, you deserve to feel like the best version of yourself — not because anyone told you to, but because you did it for you.”

Newark & Sherwood - a great place to do Business

Newark and Sherwood has much to be proud of: captivating history, beautiful countryside, worldrenowned businesses and an ideal location at the crossroads of the country’s transportation network. Situated at the intersection of the A1, M1, A46 and East Coast Mainline, and within a 1-hour 15-minute train ride from London, the district is a fantastic place to locate your business.

Newark and Sherwood is ambitious, forward thinking and has a growth agenda. The District Council (NSDC) is passionate about providing the best service possible for local businesses and those interested in moving into the area. The dynamic Economic Growth team offers a package of support to help new and established businesses access funding, training, property and data insights. Support includes events from surgeries to workshops and our annual conference. Discretionary rate relief is also available if proposals align with the local community plan.

The district’s town centres boast a strong independent offer and an engaged business community, with Newark Business Club and the local Tourism Action Group championing collaboration and innovation.

The largest town in the area, Newark-on-Trent, is home to 43,000 people. Schemes to the south of Newark, including the Middlebeck development, will add 7,000 new homes and 2 million sq. ft of employment floorspace, along with a southern bypass road and the dualling of the A46 to ease journey times.

Using allocations from the Towns Fund, Levelling Up Funds and UK Shared Prosperity Fund, NSDC has invested in regenerating the district and supporting businesses to grow and thrive. Recent success stories include the Newark Air and Space Institute, a world-class training facility for the air and space industry with curriculums that have been co-designed with industry partners to fill new and developing career pathways.

NSDC work closely with schools, Further and Higher Education providers to ensure that the workforce of the future has the skills required to meet the needs of 21st century businesses. An annual Future First Expo links learners with employers to help them explore employment opportunities.

Other developments include Tritax Park, a logistics park in Phase 2 of its construction. This scheme offers a fantastic opportunity for enterprises to expand and join a growing logistics sector that has doubled in employee numbers in recent years.

Looking forward, regeneration schemes will be taking place in Clipstone and Ollerton to boost local opportunities and aspirations and health, making the district a better place to live, work and visit.

STAY COOL IN STYLE

SMART SHADE SOLUTIONS FOR A SUN-SOAKED GARDEN

We’re all hoping for a summer filled with gloriously sunny days, warm evenings, and plenty of time spent outdoors. But while sunshine is lovely, not everyone wants to sit in it all day. The good news is, there are plenty of stylish and practical ways to add shade to your garden, helping you enjoy your outdoor space for longer — comfortably.

THINK LONG-TERM WITH TREES

If you have the space, planting trees is a beautiful, natural way to create shade. Mature trees offer a tranquil canopy perfect for a seating area, and when evening falls, solar lights hanging from the branches can turn it into a magical retreat. However, if you’re starting from scratch, trees take years to establish — so for instant shade, you may want to consider quicker solutions.

SAIL SHADES: FLEXIBLE AND STYLISH

Sail shades are a modern, elegant way to create shaded areas. These fabric canopies, inspired by ship sails, are attached to anchor points and can be installed at various angles, positions, and heights — offering unmatched flexibility. They’re available in different shapes, sizes, and colours, allowing you to customise the look and function to suit your space. Easy to remove and store during winter, sail shades also let you update your garden’s look quickly with a simple fabric change.

PERGOLAS: STRUCTURED ELEGANCE

Pergolas are a timeless choice that add both shade and architectural interest. Whether freestanding or attached to a wall, they’re available in timber or aluminium to suit your garden’s style. Timber pergolas can be custom-built to perfectly fit your space, while aluminium versions are often available in ready-made sizes. Features like louvered roofs or sliding side panels give you control over light and privacy, making them an ideal addition to patios and terraces.

ARBOURS: CHARMING AND COMPACT

For smaller gardens, an arbour is a charming way to introduce shaded seating. These structures come in a variety of sizes and create a strong visual focal point even when not in use. Personalise your arbour with cushions, solar lights, or climbing plants to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere — perfect for relaxing on a summer evening.

GAZEBOS: YEAR-ROUND GARDEN ROOMS

Gazebos offer a versatile solution for shade and shelter. Available in a range of styles and roof types — including thatched, cedar, and timber — they can be dressed up with outdoor furniture, rugs, and potted plants to create a comfortable and stylish garden room. Some models come with removable sides and heating, making them usable even in cooler months. We’ve installed gazebos that function beautifully all year round.

HOMEGROWN HIGHLIGHTS

YOUR JULY GARDEN CHECKLIST & HARVESTING GUIDE

With summer in full swing, gardens across the UK are buzzing with activity — even if the rain has been in short supply this year. Whether you have a flourishing veg patch or a few pots on the patio, July is a month of reward and gentle maintenance. Here’s how to make the most of your garden right now, plus ideas for using the delicious things you grow.

Dry spells can be tough on gardens, but there are simple ways to help your plants thrive. Water early in the morning or late evening to reduce evaporation, and aim for the base of plants rather than leaves. A layer of mulch (like bark, grass clippings or compost) helps keep moisture in the soil where it’s needed. Prioritise thirsty crops like tomatoes, courgettes, and lettuces.

WHAT TO HARVEST NOW

July is harvest time for many soft fruits and salad crops. Look out for ripe strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries – perfect for fresh desserts or freezing for later. Vegetables like courgettes, broad beans, beetroot, and early potatoes should also be ready to pick. Herbs such as basil, mint, and

parsley are at their best now too, keep snipping to encourage new growth.

CREATIVE WAYS TO USE YOUR PRODUCE

Turn your harvest into light summer meals: think beetroot and feta salad, broad bean bruschetta, or homegrown strawberry jam. Herbs can be blitzed into pestos or frozen in ice cube trays with olive oil for use later in the year. Got a glut of courgettes? Try grating them into muffins or fritters.

For a refreshing twist, muddle soft fruits and mint into homemade cordials or cocktails, or top fresh berries with a spoonful of yoghurt and a drizzle of honey for a quick summer pudding. Fresh-picked herbs can also be used in bouquets or to scent the home naturally.

ONGOING GARDEN JOBS

Deadhead flowers regularly to keep your borders blooming.

Feed container plants and veg crops with a high-potash fertiliser (like tomato feed). Tie in tall or climbing plants to prevent wind damage.

Keep an eye on pests like aphids or slugs, especially around tender growth.

Even in drier conditions, July brings colour, fragrance and flavour to the garden. With a bit of thoughtful care and some seasonal inspiration in the kitchen, your patch of green can be both beautiful and bountiful.

SUMMER UPGRADES FOR YOUR HOME

With longer days and warmer weather, summer is the season when many of us turn our attention to home improvements — and for good reason.

From upgrading tired windows and doors to adding personality with timeless antiques, July is the perfect month to refresh your home with a look that blends comfort and character.

LET THE LIGHT IN

In older properties, especially those built before the 1980s, draughty windows and worn-out doors are common. Replacing them not only improves energy efficiency but also transforms the look and feel of your home.

Modern frames — whether uPVC, composite, or aluminium — offer styles to suit both contemporary and traditional houses. Sash window designs, heritage colours, and woodeffect finishes mean you don’t have to sacrifice character for comfort. Upgraded front doors offer better security, insulation and kerb appeal. If you’re thinking of selling, this type of update is often a smart investment.

And it’s not just about what you see from the

street. Bifold or sliding doors opening onto a garden or patio can turn an underused space into a summer sanctuary — ideal for entertaining or enjoying the sunshine with a book and a cold drink.

ANTIQUE FINDS AND STATEMENT PIECES

While some updates focus on efficiency and value, others prioritise charm. There’s a thriving antiques and vintage scene across Lincolnshire, from regular auctions to tucked-away shops and weekend fairs that attract collectors and casual browsers alike.

Whether you’re hunting for a farmhouse table, a Victorian mirror or a quirky one-off to spark conversation, antiques add instant personality to your space. They’re also a more sustainable choice — rehoming a beautiful old piece instead of buying new fits well with the slow-living ethos many now embrace.

Not sure where to start? Look for quality over trend: solid wood, craftsmanship, and good patina are always in style. Don’t worry about a little wear — it adds story and soul. And if you’re clearing out, now’s a great time to sell unwanted furniture or décor through local dealers or online platforms. One person’s attic clutter could be another’s perfect find.

A BLEND OF OLD AND NEW

The best homes feel collected, not copied — and combining thoughtful upgrades with character pieces is a great way to strike that balance. In Lincolnshire, where countryside charm meets market town convenience, homeowners are lucky to have both heritage and practicality on their doorstep.

So, whether you’re investing in new windows, restoring a pre-loved cabinet, or sprucing up your front step with a pot of lavender, July is the time to embrace the season — and let your home shine inside and out.

SUMMER MOTORING

STAY SAFE WITH THESE VEHICLE CHECKS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a longer summer road trip, making sure your vehicle is road-ready is an essential part of your journey. A few simple maintenance checks can help you avoid unnecessary delays, expensive repairs, or even dangerous breakdowns.

The warmer months often bring heavier traffic, longer journeys, and higher vehicle loads – all of which put extra pressure on your car. That’s why it’s important to carry out basic checks before setting off, and to stay on top of regular servicing throughout the year.

Here are five essential checks every driver should carry out before hitting the road:

TYRES

Inspect your tyres to ensure they’re in good condition. Check the pressure is correct for your vehicle and the load you’re carrying – especially if you’re packing for a holiday. Look for signs of wear, cracks, or bulges, and make sure the tread depth is at least 1.6mm. Don’t forget to check your spare tyre too, if you have one.

FUEL

Always begin a long journey with plenty of fuel in the tank. Keeping it at least one-

quarter full is a good habit, reducing the risk of running out in an unfamiliar or remote area.

ENGINE OIL

Check your oil levels using the dipstick and top up if needed. Consistently low oil could be a sign that your car needs a check-up, so if you find yourself topping up more frequently, it’s wise to visit a garage.

WATER/SCREEN WASH

Make sure your screen wash is topped up to keep your windscreen clear from dirt, insects and debris. Also check coolant levels to avoid overheating, especially during hot weather or when stuck in traffic.

LIGHTS

Before any trip, check that all your lights are working properly – this includes indicators, brake lights, fog lights and headlights. Proper lighting is

crucial for safety, especially if you’re travelling early in the morning or at night.

If you’re unsure about carrying out these checks yourself, or your car is due a service, don’t hesitate to contact your local garage. Most offer a preholiday check or summer service to help ensure your car is running smoothly. Local independent garages are often competitively priced and provide a friendly, personalised service. They can spot potential issues before they become serious, saving you stress and money in the long run.

For peace of mind, consider booking a professional vehicle inspection before you travel. A specialist in vehicle servicing can carry out a full check, including brakes, tyres, exhausts and diagnostics. Safe and stress-free summer motoring starts with preparation!
