Welcome to the Caxton Theatre 2025 season where we have a packed exciting year for you all.
The first half of the 2025 Season met with mixed reactions. ‘The Pillowman’, although extremely well presented and brilliantly acted, left some audience members more than a little shocked. We do strive to present all genres of theatre within the Caxtons and appreciate that some are not to everybody’s taste. Pushing boundaries on occasions is not such a bad thing. What followed was a Spanish classic translated for our theatre by our own Gillian Shields – ‘The House of Bernada Alba’. Brilliantly presented, sometimes funny but nevertheless a tragedy it was well received by all who attended. We finished the first half of the season very much more on the lighter side with two comedies: ‘If I Were You’ and ‘Spirit Level’; both plays much more lighthearted than our previous two productions.
In the second half of the season, we will present four classic favourites. The first is George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’. It is ‘My Fair Lady’ without the songs but a very funny firm favourite. This is followed by “Strangers on a Train”. Alfred Hitchcock turned this thrilling play into a classic Hollywood film. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has become a recent West End hit and has toured the UK to packed audiences. Truly one not to be missed. We finish 2025 with the much-loved family favourite ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ which is bound to be popular and bring a tear to most people’s eyes. We are all extremely excited about the second half of our season and we hope you will be too.
This August our new Youth Theatre will be one year old and continues to thrive with a regular membership of over thirty young people. Four of them were in the cast of The House of Bernada Alba. They presented a small production back in February to their parents. Heather Bagot our youth leader is planning another presentation for December. Please check out the Caxton Youth Theatre Facebook page for what the Youth Theatre have been getting up to and what they are planning next.
A massive thank you must go to all our volunteers who staff the theatre from our wonderful directors, the actors, and the technicians and back-stage crew who stage our plays. To the members who look after you the audience, welcoming you in our lovely theatre, serving you behind the bar and in our coffee bar, the programme sellers and our box office team. Not least, to yourselves for your support of our theatre. Without you, we would be unable to survive.
There are countless opportunities within The Caxton Theatre both on and off stage if you were interested in becoming a volunteer. The membership application form is within this brochure, or you can contact us at caxton.membership@outlook.com and you can join online. If you don’t want to join but want to know more about our Caxton family you can come along to our regular Thursday open nights where you can meet current members for an informal chat, listen to the Director of the next play to be cast describing their play and the cast that are needed for the production. Or join our mailing list – mailing. caxtontheatre@gmail.com. It is always a warm and friendly gathering in the Studio Bar area where you are guaranteed a warm welcome and the Bar is always open. Look out for dates towards the back of this brochure.
This brochure contains our plans for July 2025 – December 2025 but are subject to change. For further information, photographs and updates check our website www.caxtontheatre.com our Facebook page The Caxton Theatre Grimsby.
Many thanks for you continued patronage, which is as ever much appreciated.

Well done! MACBETH –
Written by William Shakespeare
This production was a triumph for Director Cathy Bennett-Ryan, and Cast and Crew. Due in some part to Macbeth being on the curriculum, some of our local schools took the opportunity to give their students a unique opportunity to watch a live performance of a text which they would normally only get to see on paper, and in addition have a thoroughly entertaining evening.
So many people took to their keyboard to express how much they had enjoyed the production. Well done everyone involved, and here’s hoping to see some of those new young theatre goers next season.

‘My Fair Lady’ without the songs, this is the play upon which the musical and film was based.
Henry Higgins is a phonetics expert, who takes on the challenge of transforming Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, into a refined lady. The play is set in early 20th-century London, a time when social hierarchies were rigid, and the English class system was deeply ingrained.
The setting of Pygmalion is crucial, reflecting the norms and expectations of the time. Shaw uses

the characters and their interactions to critique the prevailing attitudes toward class distinctions and the limitations imposed by language and accent. The play engages with the broader social issues of the era, including the suffragette movement and the evolving roles of women in society.
Pygmalion remains relevant for its exploration of social issues that transcend its original time period. The play has inspired numerous adaptations, including the above-mentioned well-known musical My Fair Lady, which further emphasizes its enduring appeal and impact on popular culture. Director Anthony Asquith’s 1938 film adaptation of Pygmalion is considered the best and most straightforward film adaptation of the play.

A psychological thriller where people test the limits of their morality.
When a chance encounter between two strangers strikes a conversation about morality and having a better life, it soon turns sinister. The two soon make a deal for murder. Bruno will kill Guy’s unfaithful wife, whilst Guy kills Bruno’s hated father. Seeing as they do not know each other, surely, it’s the perfect crime. Whilst Guy does not take the conversation seriously, one fateful phone call from Bruno sends the pair down a spiralling path of deceit, madness and paranoia.
Will Guy give in to Bruno’s demands and fulfil his part of the Faustian deal? What will Bruno do if Guy falters? We can never know what people are truly capable of.
Based on the classic novel, which inspired the popular
Hitchcock film, this dark tale drives the characters to breaking point as they battle with their humanity and the lengths they will go to, to have what they want.

This is a funny and moving play about Christopher Boone who is in his late teens and lives in Swindon with his dad. He shares a close bond with his teacher, Siobhan, who encourages him to keep a written journal of his thoughts and activities.
He is extremely curious, an excellent mathematics student, and has an extraordinary ability to observe and retain highly detailed information about any situation he finds himself in.
However, Christopher is autistic and for him the world is black and white, fact and fiction. The adults around him live in a world of shades of grey.
The Play begins when Christopher discovers his neighbour’s dog Wellington has been stabbed to death with a garden fork. Mrs. Shears assumes Christopher is the killer and calls the police.
The situation is resolved despite Christopher punching a
policeman and he resolves to make it his personal mission to solve the case of who killed Wellington.
Gradually Christopher uncovers the truth surrounding Wellingtons death but, in the process, uncovers far deeper secrets.

Set during the dark and dangerous build-up to the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom follows sad young William Beech, a neglected child, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and builds a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley. All seems perfect until William is devastatingly summoned by his mother back to London. He returns to a hellish world where bombs are falling and his mother neglects him again.
Mr Tom, worried about the boy, sets off to London to find William. Against the odds, he does find the boy and ultimately rescues him, taking him back to the countryside, to love, caring and peace.
This is the ultimate story of how someone crushed by neglect and tragedy can be rescued by love. The play finishes on a positive and feelgood note.

A blocked ear caused by wax can be very uncomfortable and may lead to temporary hearing loss, dizziness, and tinnitus. It can also cause hearing aids to whistle or function poorly. Many people find it far more debilitating than they expect.
Fortunately, a simple wax removal procedure can make a significant difference. However, most GP surgeries no longer offer ear syringing.
At Sofina Ear Care, you’ll find a private, professional ear wax removal service led by an audiologist with over 30 years’ experience in hospital-based care. Microsuction, irrigation, and manual removal are all available at our Fulstow clinic—easily accessible from Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Louth, and surrounding areas.
Patients are seen in a comfortable consultation room with free parking right outside. Each appointment includes a full ear health consultation, with wax removal and/or hearing tests as needed. Before-andafter photos are also provided, so results can be seen as well as felt.
We charge a flat fee for wax removal, whether one or both ears need treatment. We don’t sell hearing aids and have no ties to any provider, so our advice is always honest and impartial.
We understand that not everyone can afford to pay for a service that was once free on the NHS. But for those seeking quick, effective relief, Sofina Ear Care offers a trusted, local alternative.

On February 2nd 1943, The Grimsby Evening Telegraph carried an advertisement for a play performed by the Caxton Players. On the front page was a photograph of a scene from ‘Children to Bless You’.
This was the first public appearance by the ‘Caxton Players’ as a society. The real beginnings though go further back. Late in 1940, at a time when local dramatic societies and operatic groups had closed down because of the war, three members of the Grimsby Evening Telegraph staff decided to put on a play, to counteract the depression of the times. John Knowles, the advertising manager, two of his staff, Mary Pinion and Sheila Robinson, all with some dramatic experience, and four other newspaper workers became the Telegraph Amateur Dramatic Society. In February 1943, it was decided by the committee that a new society should be formed, because there were so few members of the Evening Telegraph now left. The name ‘Caxton’ was suggested because of the connection with printing.
The society has continued to thrive since its humble beginnings and is the only society in North East Lincolnshire with its own theatre. Our auditorium seats 174 people and we produce eight main-house productions per year. These productions last for seven performances –Saturday to Saturday (excluding Sunday), and are produced every six to seven weeks.
A taster of the play normally takes place 14-16 weeks before opening night, where anyone can come along and have a drink and hear the Director’s take on the play about to be cast. Audition pieces are available on the night to take away to prepare for the auditions, which take place a few nights later.
Auditions take place in front of a casting panel of three directors, one of which will be the director of the play concerned. Rehearsal periods last about 12-13 weeks before opening night. The number of rehearsals you will be required to attend depends on the size of the part you have. The director will draw up a rehearsal schedule at the beginning so you will know when you are required. As we always have at least two plays in production at any one time, the first period of rehearsals take place in our rehearsal rooms (Burnetts) next door to the theatre in Strand Street. Then immediately after the preceding play finishes rehearsals move to the actual stage until opening night.
We also put on smaller productions, normally for two or three nights, in the bar area –the Studio Bar. Rehearsals for these productions vary, depending on the director and cast involved. The taster and auditions for these productions are usually run as for a main stage production. We hope the above information gives you a taste of our society.

Anyone is welcome to come along to our regular open nights and to audition to be in any Caxton Main House or Studio Bar Play – in fact this is how most of our members arrive!
We hold an open night, usually on a Thursday, before every play about to be cast. The format varies according to the Director. Generally, the taster for the play and the characters will last for approximately 30 minutes to an hour after which there is the opportunity to socialise. You can also decide if you fancy having a go. If the answer is yes, then you should come to the audition night, usually the following Tuesday.
Alternatively, come to an open night purely as a social event, to meet new people. The bar will be open and you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome.
Auditions are held before a panel of three directors, who will select the best mix of people to form the cast. You will not have to act in front of everyone else, nor learn the audition piece by heart.
We choose a variety of plays each season so there are roles to suit all talents and ages. Experienced actors and complete novices are welcomed every year; our directors are always looking for new talent to nurture and develop.
A Caxton play takes about 12 weeks from first rehearsal to opening night. Rehearsals are usually three nights a week, at the discretion of the director, but minor players rehearse significantly less. Everyone is part of the team and preparing a play is seen as a social event and a chance for fun and friendship.
Details of open nights and auditions can be found on our website www.caxtontheatre.com, Facebook (thecaxtontheatre) and on page 32 of this brochure.
