1. AI as the recall cost engine “In 2026 AI will move from ‘nice to have’ to the engine room of recalls across food and drink. A single UK food recall can cost millions once you account for withdrawals, rework, wastage, logistics and call handling. If AI can take just 30 to 50 per cent of the manual handling, call volumes and paperwork out of that process, the saving for large brands is measured in many millions of pounds a year, not loose change. The big shift next year will be leaders asking a very simple question before they sign off a recall plan: ‘Show me where the AI is or show me where the money is going to be wasted.’”

4. No excuses in a world of always-on recalls “Food safety pressure continues to rise. UK food recalls increased again in 2024 and affected more products per incident than in the previous year. At the same time the national Product Safety Database continues to record more than 2,000 unsafe product notifications a year which shapes the expectations regulators have of food manufacturers and retailers. In 2026, ‘we did our best with emails and a PDF’ will not cut it. Tech savvy consumers expect to be identified, contacted and kept informed through digital journeys they can trust, and law firms will expect clients to arrive with a defensible, data rich recall record as standard, not as a nice surprise.”

2. Recalls are ripe for a reset “In the first months of 2025 more than 180 UK recalls were issued across food, electronics, cosmetics and children’s products, with individual events costing brands millions.

5. The death of the paper notice “Many F&B businesses still rely on posters at tills, in store printouts and online notices that customers rarely see. That is an analogue response to a digital scale safety problem. With rising recall volumes and higher scrutiny, a paper notice pinned up in a store will start to look negligent.

3. The year of the ‘unknown’ customer “Food and drink brands still struggle to reach customers who buy through convenience stores, discounters and mixed baskets where no registration trail exists. Looking ahead to next year, brands will start to use connected data, QR journeys and AI triage to turn anonymous buyers into known

BEYOND THE BARCODE

Traceability, Technology, and the Future of UK Food Introduction 2026 is shaping up to be a defining year for the food industry, with a wave of regulatory tightening and higher expectations around traceability, labelling accuracy, and safety.

Recent food safety scandals and labelling mistakes have put businesses under the microscope, driving home the high stakes of getting it right.

Regulators and major retailers are increasingly insisting on accurate, accessible digital records for every product’s journey from farm to fork. At the same time, consumers are demanding greater transparency about where their food comes from and what’s in it. For food and drink manufacturers, the challenge heading into 2026 is not just what is changing – it’s how to stay compliant and competitive amid fast-changing rules without drowning in administration. The good news is that with the right systems and proactive approach, tighter compliance can become an opportunity to strengthen efficiency, build brand trust, and drive innovation rather than a bureaucratic burden.

Consortium responded by emphasising that strict supply chain controls, including detailed traceability records, are needed to make sure fraud is avoided and products are… as described.

In an era of economic pressures, the head of the UK Food Standards Agency warned that the risk of food fraud only increases, making it “vital everyone involved in the food chain works to ensure that food is safe and what it says it is.”

It’s not only intentional fraud that poses risks – simple labelling errors can have serious consequences for public health and brand reputation. Allergen mislabelling is a prime example. The tragic death of teenager Natasha Ednan-Laperouse in 2016 due to an undeclared allergen in a baguette led to “Natasha’s Law,” which since 2021 mandates full ingredient and allergen labels on fresh foods prepared for direct sale. Yet allergen labelling mistakes remain a widespread problem. In the first half of 2025, 35% of all food product recalls in the UK were triggered by allergen labelling errors, making this the single biggest cause of recalls. Nearly 150 recalls were issued in just six months, a worrisome uptick from previous years. A food industry report noted that “labelling governance is still the industry’s weakest control” – meaning many companies lack adequate processes to ensure labels are correct, consistent and up-to-date.

The High Stakes of Traceability and Labelling Several high-profile incidents in the past decade have underscored why robust traceability and precise labelling are non-negotiable. The 2013 “Horsegate” scandal – where horse meat was illegally passed off as beef across Europe – famously shook consumer confidence and cost companies millions.

More recently, in 2023, a UK food processor was caught mixing rotting, imported pork with fresh British meat and selling it as UK-sourced. This industrial-scale fraud, now under criminal investigation, has drawn comparisons to Horsegate and raised fresh alarm about gaps in oversight. The British Retail

and vaccines), IoT sensors can immediately alert suppliers if a container becomes too warm or if a seal is broken, so that corrective action can be taken before a product becomes unsafe. By logging every environmental condition a food item experiences, IoT creates a living record that not only helps prevent spoilage but also contributes to traceability data. For example, if a batch of salad leaves shows signs of E. coli, a cloud-based IoT tracking platform can instantly identify which farm it came from, which truck carried it, and which stores received it – enabling a targeted recall in hours. This level of visibility was science fiction a generation ago; today it’s increasingly within reach even for mid-sized producers as costs of sensors drop. Overall, these technologies are converging to support the food industry’s shift from reactive to proactive food safety – identifying issues at the earliest possible stage or preventing them outright, rather than scrambling after an incident has already spread.

Even beyond safety, accuracy in labelling affects consumer trust every day. Shoppers expect honest information about what they buy, from nutritional content to country of origin. Consumer advocacy groups have flagged misleading origin labels – for example, packaging adorned with a Union Jack and “Made in Britain” that, on closer inspection, admits to containing imported meat. In a 2024 survey, two-thirds of UK consumers said it’s important to know the origin of their fresh produce, and over half want origin information even for processed foods. Such findings have prodded authorities into action: the government has consulted on stricter origin labelling to improve transparency.

In short, there is mounting pressure on food businesses to ensure everything on the label is truthful and clear, both to comply with the law and to meet customer expectations.

UK Regulations and Compliance: A Moving Target

Tech Innovations Transforming Food Traceability

The regulatory landscape in the UK is evolving to keep pace with these challenges and innovations. While there isn’t one single “big bang” law overhaul in 2026 for traceability, a series of rules and guidance updates are raising the bar for compliance. The overarching trend is clear: authorities want better data and more accountability from farm to fork. Under the UK’s General Food Law (retained from EU regulation), businesses have long been required to be able to trace ingredients and products one step back and one step forward in the supply chain. Now, both regulators and major retail customers expect far more granular traceability – essentially, being able to produce the full story of a product’s life within seconds, not days. This expectation is driven in part by technology’s capabilities and partly by impatience with past failures. As one industry blog noted, retailers, auditors and government inspectors are all tightening standards on origin tracking, batch coding, and digital record-keeping.

Increasingly, “if it’s not documented, it didn’t happen” is the mantra. Companies are being pushed to maintain fully auditable digital records for every batch, ingredient, and production run, such that any anomaly can be traced and proven with evidence on demand.

Fortunately, the industry is not tackling these challenges emptyhanded. A range of emerging technologies is revolutionising how food is tracked and monitored, making it easier to assure traceability and safety at every step. Blockchain has moved from buzzword to practical tool for end-to-end supply chain transparency. By recording each transaction or movement of a food item on a tamper-proof digital ledger, blockchain allows any stakeholder – from a supermarket to a consumer with a smartphone – to instantly verify a product’s journey and provenance. Early adopters have reported remarkable improvements. For instance, Walmart trialled a blockchain-based traceability system for mangoes that cut the time needed to trace the fruit’s origin from seven days to just 2.2 seconds. In Europe, retail giants like Carrefour have implemented blockchain to track products like chicken and milk, giving shoppers access to detailed farm-to-store data and sharply reducing the potential for fraud or error. These examples show how decentralised ledgers can make recalls faster and more precise, and counterfeit or mislabelled goods easier to spot.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are also proving to be game-changers. AI can churn through vast datasets from production lines, sensors, and audits to detect anomalies or patterns humans might miss. This means issues like a spike in temperature in a refrigerated truck or a subtle discrepancy in ingredient sourcing can be flagged in real time. Machine-vision systems (often coupled with AI) are being used on packing lines to automatically verify that the correct labels are applied to each product – a safety net against human error when thousands of items are being packaged at speed. AI-driven analytics can even predict risks before they happen, by learning to recognise signals of potential contamination or quality issues and enabling preventive actions. In one estimate, integrating technologies like blockchain, AI and IoT (Internet of Things) sensors for traceability can reduce supply chain fraud by up to 30% and improve operational efficiency by 25%.

Several specific regulatory changes are hitting in late 2025 and 2026. For example, January 2026 will see new UK Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules come into force, requiring food and drink manufacturers to report detailed data on their packaging and pay higher fees for packaging that isn’t easily recyclable. While EPR is aimed at sustainability, it ties into traceability because businesses must accurately track materials and weights for every product’s packaging – effectively treating packaging data with the same rigour as ingredient data. Such reporting obligations make it clear that robust data management systems are now a necessity, not a luxury. In a different vein, the UK’s long-planned restrictions on advertising “less healthy” foods (HFSS – high fat, sugar, salt products) also kick in from January 2026. Manufacturers will have to have precise nutritional information to classify which of their products are caught by the ad bans. This indirectly relates to labelling accuracy: mislabel a product’s nutrition profile and you could fall foul of advertising law or retailer listing requirements.

On the food safety front specifically, regulators are updating guidance and stepping up enforcement. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has been refining how food businesses must

provide allergen information (as with Natasha’s Law) and is exploring new measures like “Owen’s Law”, a proposed rule that would mandate written allergen info on restaurant menus. Trading Standards and Environmental Health officers, who police labelling on the ground, have been active in cracking down on misleading claims. It was reported in 2024 that post-Brexit rules may require labels stating “Not for EU” on all meat and dairy products sold in Great Britain, to distinguish them from goods that meet EU export standards.

This has caused some consternation among producers due to added cost, but it exemplifies how intricate and ever-changing labelling compliance can be. Food companies operating internationally must also keep an eye on global regulations – for instance, the United States is rolling out a Food Traceability Final Rule (under the FDA’s FSMA 204) by 2026, compelling importers and domestic firms alike to maintain enhanced digital traceability records for certain high-risk foods. A UK exporter sending products abroad might need to align with these requirements as well. The overall direction is unmistakable: whether by national law, international rule, or customer expectation, the margin for error in traceability and

labelling is vanishing. Compliance management now demands agility and foresight – businesses must anticipate new rules on the horizon and invest early in the systems, training, and audits to meet them.

AGILITY AND ‘SCALING THE PLANT-BASED REVOLUTION’ Experts predict 2026 shift in food and beverage manufacturing strategies

Food and beverage engineering experts have predicted that manufacturing agility and increasingly scalable plant-based protein manufacturing will be key trends shaping the sector in 2026.

Global engineering consultancy NIRAS has called for manufacturers to turn towards more adaptable and efficient factories that can respond quickly to market forces.

1. Plant-based proteins will achieve scale Jolmer is experienced in the dairy sector, but is increasingly involved in alternative protein production. He foresees the following next year: “2026 could be the year that the plantbased protein revolution grows at scale. Consumer demand for alternative protein sources has never been higher, driven both by huge improvements to the taste and texture of products and a rising awareness about the impact of animal proteins on the environment.”

Jonas B. Borrit, Vice President for Process Industries at NIRAS is looking back to look ahead. He said: “Manufacturers across Europe have faced hugely challenging market forces over recent years. In 2025 alone, we’ve seen ever-changing tariffs, stagnant economic growth and rising labour costs, on top of the constant challenge of constantly shifting consumer demands.”

Alongside consumer demand, start-ups and pioneers are expected to take the lead, according to Jolmer: “There are so many innovative plant-based startups moving products towards pilot and factory scale. The key challenge facing them all is accessing the funding and technical insights to enable them to turn their ideas into safe, scalable and profitable operations and compete with more established players.

Jonas added that these obstacles show no signs of disappearing and manufacturers will need to be adaptive and innovative in their approaches.

“For example, at NIRAS we’ve been discussing the rising demand for capital avoidance - a focus on optimising existing operations fully before looking at capital expenditure - and the scrutiny on costs and budgets means this approach will be just as important next year.”

Jonas, alongside NIRAS colleagues Nick Hickman, vice president for business development, and Jolmer Nieuwkerk, engineering expertise manager, shared wider predictions for the year ahead.

Jolmer also emphasised the rise of hybrid protein-products.

He said: “There is more focus on hybrid approaches within the protein transition. Plant-based is truly different from animal-based; both the process and the product are distinct since pure plant proteins behave differently. Yet, you can still reduce hybrid content while maintaining the desired product characteristics and ensuring the process remains suitable.

“The fundamentals of sustainable manufacturing are arguably even more important given the pressure on costs. Lower emissions, increased energy efficiency and cost reductions are vital considerations for businesses to drive growth, without considering the huge impact manufacturers have on planet health, “ explained Jonas, having observed this trend across the entire sector.

“This year we have been speaking about the idea of capital avoidance - the strategic management of assets and operations to prevent unnecessary capital expenditure and we expect to see this focus on optimising the agility and capacity of existing facilities into 2026.

He continued: “The good news is that emerging technologies and the rising capability of heat pumps, green fuels and power-to-X solutions are increasing the range of possibilities for manufacturers. Heat pumps in particular are increasingly capable of higher temperatures which can have a significant contribution towards more sustainable energy generation.”

“A factory designed for multiple products has always been inherently flexible and this flexibility should be part of the design process. Many factories are still based on large volumes and huge inventories, so this requires a shift in thinking.”

“This year we’ve seen many CapEx projects face tighter scrutiny due to global macroeconomic instability delaying approvals and increasing pressure on costs before work can begin.“ Nick reflected on the past couple of months.

These seemingly mundane objects are major contributors to what the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and other studies classify as fugitive plastic waste: materials that escape even the best-managed recycling systems.

Yet in the midst of this challenge, a new approach is emerging, one that combines scientific rigour, innovative materials, and practical operational thinking to fundamentally rethink what happens at the end of a cup’s life. Enter VeriGreen Plus, a world-first bio-based biotransformable cup, set to make its UK debut at Packaging Innovations & Empack 2026. Engineered to be ideally recyclable but if it escapes the recycling stream it will return to nature, it was developed through a collaboration between eGreen International, a family-owned company with a 75-year legacy in sustainable catering and packaging, and Polymateria, a cutting-edge polymer science and tech company based in London.

Celine Moreira, Global Partnerships Director at Polymateria, explains the rationale behind the technology. “The company was founded in 2015, around the time of the Paris Agreements,” she says. “At the time, there was a lot of talk around the end of life with plastics and what to do with plastic solutions. There was a gap in the market: no credible solution existed to tackle fugitive waste. There wasn’t a solution that was both circular and biodegradable. Especially in markets lacking infrastructure, that waste was only going to increase.

That’s where we decided to start and design this technology.”

For Caroline Wiggins, Chief Executive of eGreen International, VeriGreen Plus represents more than just a product. “It’s a single-use product but made from fossil-fuel-free material,” she explains. “If you follow COP28 and all the global conversations, you’ll know the world is moving towards fossil-fuel-free, carbon-free materials. At the moment, all plastics come from oil. This material doesn’t. It’s made from

Steven Altmann-Richer, Corporate Affairs Officer at Polymateria, emphasises the importance of independent verification in achieving credibility. “Standardisation is incredibly important because it provides that neutral benchmark,” he says. “It’s much better to have that independently tested and follow those independent goalposts. The creation of the BSI PAS 9017 standard by BSI was an important moment for us because it enabled us to clearly demonstrate that we can do what we say we can. The biodegradation space has been quite contested, so going above and beyond to demonstrate it was critical.”

started using it in August at the Women’s World Cup. They were impressed by the credentials and keen to adopt a more sustainable approach. At a site like Twickenham, where 80,000 people are served drinks in a short window, reusables are difficult due to loss, cost, and logistics. So, a single-use cup that’s recyclable and fossil-fuel-free is a much more viable option.”

Liverpool Football Club has also recently received its first delivery of VeriGreen Plus cups, demonstrating rapid adoption by highvolume venues. The cups were even endorsed by King Charles, who commissioned them through his Terra Carta mandate.

Wiggins notes, “He has seen the technology in action close up when he visited the labs at Imperial College. His stance is clear: every step towards reducing waste, improving recycling, and developing new sustainable technologies is worthwhile.”

Science meets practicality: The self-destruct technology What sets VeriGreen Plus apart is the combination of scientific innovation and practical operational design. At its core is a proprietary self-destruct technology. If a cup escapes collection or recycling, it doesn’t remain as an enduring pollutant. Instead, it initiates a process Polymateria calls biotransformation, transforming the plastic into a harmless, earth-friendly wax that fully biodegrades.

For Polymateria, these high-profile deployments are more than symbolic; they are proof points that the technology works in complex, real-world environments. Twickenham, for example, achieved a 98% cup collection rate on its first attempt, an extraordinary result in a venue that serves tens of thousands of drinks in a very short window.

Caroline Wiggins elaborates: “The priority is always that cups are collected and recycled. But we know 80% of plastic that ends up in rivers and oceans comes from land. If a product escapes the recycling stream, the self-destruct technology means it will biotransform when exposed to heat, air, sunlight and moisture. It transforms into an earth-friendly wax. If you touch it, it feels like a powder, or icing sugar, and eventually it returns to the earth, where bacteria consume completely. That’s particularly important in environments with large crowds and a low collection rate. It’s not an excuse for littering, but it provides a safety net. The QR code on the cup also links to information for consumers, supporting education and behaviour change.”

VeriGreen Plus is also backed by strong credentials: it is carbon neutral and made from 100% ISCC-certified material linked to used plant oil via Mass Balance, combining operational practicality with a clear environmental impact.

The collaborative path to market The journey from laboratory to full-scale adoption has been deliberate and rigorous. Wiggins recalls, “The initial contact was actually a random email inviting us to a focus group. At first, we weren’t sure; it sounded like rocket science, but we went along.

We didn’t commit to anything until the technology received a BSI report, and that was the game-changer. From there, we did trials in the factory, which took around 18 months because the material is heat-sensitive. It took three to four years from first contact to launch. And now it’s attracting attention from major users. Ideas come into the business in all sorts of ways: through scientists, inventors, partners, or end users approaching us with a need.”

Celine Moreira adds further technical clarity: “The VeriGreen Plus cup has a dormancy phase - a shelf life of three years. Within that time, the plastic behaves exactly like conventional plastic. The technology in the material is dormant during this phase, ensuring full strength, appearance, and usability. If it ends up in the environment, biotransformation is triggered, attacking both crystalline and amorphous regions of the polymer and transforming into a wax-like substance that microbes can safely metabolise. The timing of this transformation on the climate and location. In Southeast Asia or India, it can be as quick as three months; in the UK, slightly longer. Most importantly, it leaves no microplastics and no toxins, making the process safe and environmentally meaningful.”

Celine Moreira adds, “Sleepless nights are part of it - it’s still a startup. But at the beginning, there were really two brains behind the technology’s development, both with extensive experience in polymer chemistry and biodegradation. We spent years balancing molecular structure, chemical formulation, and mechanical performance. Biodegradability sounds simple in theory, but you’re literally destroying the plastic while maintaining its practical properties for end users. It took trial and error and years of testing to get it right.”

Steven expands on the rigour behind this process: “Everything we do is backed by independent testing. There’s a specification, BSI PAS 9017, with stringent pass/fail criteria to guarantee no microplastics or toxins. This standard underpins rollout in multiple markets, from stadiums in the UK to coffee chains in Malaysia, providing confidence that the product does exactly what it claims.”

Steven emphasises the broader ecosystem: “Innovation across this space is welcome. No single solution is a silver bullet. VeriGreen Plus works best when combined with proper collection, recycling infrastructure, and consumer education. That’s why standardisation, independent testing, and credible verification are essential. They give manufacturers and end users confidence to adopt new materials and scale solutions globally.”

From laboratory to stadiums: Scaling in real-world settings Innovation is only meaningful when it can be applied at scale, and VeriGreen Plus has already been tested under some of the most demanding operational conditions imaginable.

Wiggins explains: “VeriGreen Plus is one of the two key products we’ll be showcasing at Packaging Innovations & Empack. We’ve only launched it at scale recently, with Twickenham Rugby among the first major adopters. They

Some have dishwashers, some don’t. Festivals, for example, would need a large number of dishwashers — the logistics are significant. You can’t have a one-size-fits-all approach. Legislation changes fast, and it’s hard to predict what the next five years will bring. You have to be flexible and adapt to what customers and consumers want.”

Finally, Wiggins reflects on the wider context for innovation in single-use plastics. “The industry benefits from messages like this, even if they don’t circulate as widely as they should.

There are so many claims that it can be hard for operators to sort the wood from the trees. People often focus only on the product or the material. But what really matters is the endto-end picture: how something is made, where it’s made, how much energy it uses, how far it travels, how it’s used, and what happens to it afterwards. Not everyone has the resources to investigate all of that, but it is increasingly important.”

A new policy brief from University College London, Seaweed and the bioeconomy: enabling growth through aquaculture policy, finds that with more than 7,000 miles of coastline and one of the world’s most advanced biomanufacturing capabilities, the UK should be a global leader in seaweed farming, processing and the manufacture of seaweed-derived products. The global seaweed market is forecast to grow in value to around £13.7bn by 2034.1

Seaweed harvesting and farming has grown into a rapidly expanding global industry thanks to its role as a sustainable source of ingredients for a range of sectors, including medicine, manufacturing, food and drink, and cosmetics. By turning seaweed into everyday products, like packaging, fuels and fertilisers, reliance on fossil-fuel derived materials can be reduced, helping to cut pollution and fight climate change.

But a series of barriers are preventing growth, including overly onerous licensing requirements, a lack of understanding of the benefits of seaweed, and limited financial incentives for investment in seaweed infrastructure, processing, research and market development.

Seaweed also plays an important role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, it adds structure and habitat to coastal ecosystems and can improve local water conditions as it grows.

The strategic placement of seaweed farms can yield additional benefits. Acting as a buffer against strong tides and currents, they can help prevent coastal erosion, while their ability to absorb and process nutrients can limit the harmful impacts of eutrophication – caused by run-off of excess fertilisers from agriculture.

The UK Seaweed Network, launched to support the emerging sector, has already attracted support from some of the world’s biggest companies, and has called on governments across the UK to grasp the opportunity and reduce barriers to spur growth.

Dr Emily Kostas, a Lecturer in sustainable biorefining and bioprocessing at University College London, said: “Seaweed is increasingly seen as a critical resource for the UK’s bioeconomy, but we are currently importing the vast majority of what we need. Growing our own sector could help address multiple challenges, but the governments of the UK have a role to play in reducing barriers to seaweed’s growth potential.”

Developed by the Scottish Seaweed Industry Association (SSIA) in collaboration with the UK Agri-Tech Centre, WWF-UK, the Fishmongers’ Company, and University College London (UCL), the UK Seaweed Network represents the first coordinated effort to connect regional expertise and strengthen the UK’s position in a global market.

Speaking ahead of an event at the UK Parliament to launch the UK Seaweed Network, the CEO of the SSIA, Rhianna Rees, said: “The UK has a phenomenal coastline that holds so much potential, and we have one of the most advanced biomanufacturing sectors in the world. With seaweed increasingly in demand not just for food and health products, but for a vast array of applications, the potential open to the UK is enormous.

To unlock the opportunity, the UK Seaweed Network is calling for streamlined licensing requirements and improved planning processes, alongside investment in processing infrastructure, stronger support for R&D, and better financial incentives for investors. It adds that greater public awareness of the benefits of seaweed farming and seaweed products would help build support for the sector and the value it can bring to coastal communities.

“Forecasters are projecting a 9.5% annual growth rate for the seaweed sector. Given it is already generating billions in revenue, it could be an enormous boon for the UK’s coastal economy.

“Seaweed is a tremendously flexible resource, and it already grows naturally in the UK’s waters,” added Rhianna. “All we need to do is harness it. As scientists uncover new applications for this incredible feedstock, the opportunity to build its economic, social, and environmental value will only grow.”

This is the first juice portion pack globally to use the innovative barrier and the first such package available in Spain.

Made with up to 80% paper, the packaging reinforces its sustainability credentials. The combination of the paper-based barrier with plant-based polymers used in the packaging material coatings, pushes the renewable content to a remarkable 92%, while reducing the carbon footprint by 43% compared with an aseptic package that uses aluminium foil layer and fossil-based polymers, as verified by the Carbon Trust1.

Together with other layers in the packaging, the paper-based barrier protects against oxygen, light, moisture and bacteria ensuring food safety is not compromised, and shelf life is comparable to packages with the aluminium foil layer. Aseptic cartons with a new paper-based barrier can be collected, sorted, and recycled where recycling infrastructure is in place, at scale. The new paper-based barrier is expected to deliver additional benefits downstream for recycling infrastructure efficiency. These include maximising the recovery of paper content from the recycling process of carton packages, while ensuring high-quality fibre and non-fibre fractions.

A simple label like “Use By” or “Best Before” which is printed on every supermarket staple almost as an afterthought, has a disproportionate impact on both business practices and household choices. Yet their meanings, far from being self-evident, are often lost in a fog of assumption and ambiguity.

Consider the typical domestic scene: a conscientious parent regarding a yogurt cup whose “Best Before” date slipped by the previous evening. The instinctive response is to discard it.

Meanwhile, in the austere quiet of a microbiology laboratory, experts examine cultures in which the harmless agents of spoilage coexist with pathogens that offer no warning by sight or scent.

The juxtaposition is revealing. What offends the palate is not necessarily what imperils health, and what appears benign can, in truth, harbour risk.

In many cases, switching to a narrow aisle layout can deliver storage capacity increases of 50% or more without expanding the premises.

Combilift also offers pedestrian solutions where mixed traffic or space constraints make ride-on trucks less suitable. The CombiWR pedestrian reach stacker is designed for very narrow aisle operation and features a patented multi-position tiller arm that allows the operator to stand safely beside the truck, rather than the rear. Logistics Manager Mark Cooley from JDM Food Group explains: “When we built the freezer, we realised that we needed a truck that would meet the demands of the low temperatures and the very narrow confines, and the Combi-WR fitted the bill.”

Mark also points out: “Its easy and straightforward operation was a major attraction. It is quicker, cheaper and more straightforward to train operatives, and a pedestrian truck is also beneficial from a safety point of view when there are a number of other personnel in and around its vicinity.”

Jordan International Transport, which handles frozen and chilled seafood, has also seen significant gains with the Combi-WR. Distribution Manager Barry McIlvanna notes that switching to a narrow aisle system in their freezer increased usable storage space from around 50% to 85%, allowing the freezer to operate far more efficiently and cost-effectively.
