THE IMPROV CHIPPY – NEW COMEDY TRAINING SCHOOL LAUNCHES IN NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

The Improv Chippy, North East Lincolnshire’s first dedicated comedy school, has officially launched. Initially offering improv lessons, the school plans to expand into sketch, clowning, and stand-up comedy in the coming months.

Its origins were laid after local comedian and writer Rob Carr, frustrated with the lack of opportunities in the area, flew to Melbourne, the comedy capital of Australia. His original intention was to pursue stand-up, but after taking a taster session at an improv theatre, he soon found his life taken over by improvisation and began intensive study with three different schools under the tutelage of some of the best improvisers in the country. He has now returned to North East Lincolnshire with the aim of gifting the same opportunity to others.

Originating in Chicago in the late 1950s and initially used as a tool for drafting comedy sketches, improv is now respected as a fullfledged art form in its own right. Many US primary and secondary schools now offer improv training alongside their standard extracurricular theatre programs, and for actors and comedians it is increasingly considered a musthave on their performance CV — its presence or absence often being make-or-break for casting agents and talent scouts. Closer to home, UK troupes such as Shoot From The Hip command

millions of subscribers on TikTok, while others like the Bristol-based Murder, She Didn’t Write (coming to Grimsby Auditorium in February) have graduated from fringe theatre to become regular mainstage staples.

But its founder is keen to emphasise that improv is not just for those with performance ambitions. “Improv is for everyone, not just for actors and comedians,” says Carr. “My classes in Melbourne had a whole mix of people — uni students and pensioners, tradies and teachers, lawyers and cleaners — all forming deep and meaningful connections with each other. I have never witnessed anything as powerful as improv for improving mental health and forging communities across all walks of life. Even sports and fitness don’t come close.”

Shortly after gaining its first graduates, the school plans to begin offering regular performances, with the aim of eventually putting on multiple improv shows each week. But it has even bigger ambitions: to connect with local partners across other artistic disciplines, establish a charity, and bring a comedy festival to

the area. In this, Carr sees a major opportunity to put North East Lincolnshire on the map. “Anecdotally, a lot of performers I know are getting fed up with Edinburgh. It’s become prohibitively expensive and with the decline of traditional media, it’s less important to your overall career than it used to be. With our cheap prices and abundance of social clubs, bars and pubs, I think there’s a real chance we can build something here that’s popular with performers and cements a place for North East Lincs on the comedy festival calendar.”

Shows and festivals are glamorous, but community-building is at the heart of The Improv Chippy’s mission. The organisation plans to form a CIC next year and develop outreach programs focusing on five key areas: neurodiversity, mental health, youth, recovery and seniors. “Festival shows are great, but that’s not what this is really all about,” Carr says. “People coming together each week just to try and make each other laugh — that’s what it’s about. Building a community dedicated to fun and silliness. I can’t build it alone. But we can build it together.”

NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL SUPPORTS SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY ONCE AGAIN WITH FREE PARKING

Taking place this year on 6 December, the aim of Small Business Saturday (SBS) is to support and celebrate small businesses, encouraging people to shop local and support small firms in their communities.

Small Business Saturday is a national initiative that celebrates local independent firms, including the traders and retailers that contribute to the unique character and atmosphere of our high streets, town centres and villages.

Our colleagues at Discover North East Lincolnshire, have created a free Digital Christmas Guide highlighting lots of local businesses and providers for the festive season. Perfect for checking out Christmas markets and fairs, artisan makers and artists, festive food and drink, where to see Father Christmas, real Christmas trees and more. https://discovernortheastlincolnshire.co.uk/ christmas/

Discover North East Lincolnshire will also be highlighting local places to shop and eat, promoting our businesses through their online channels over the coming weeks and into January. Look out for festive shop window competitions, and two new competitions to win a £50 voucher to spend with a food & drink business or local small retailer in January. You can follow them on Facebook @DiscoverNorthEastLincolnshire or Instagram on @DiscoverNEL.

North East Lincolnshire Council will be offering free parking in a number of its car parks across North East Lincolnshire on the day of Small Business Saturday on 6 December to encourage

people to use town centre small businesses across the retail and hospitality sectors.

These car parks are:

Duchess Street, Grimsby Garden Street, Grimsby Town Hall, Grimsby Garibaldi Street, Grimsby Grant Street, Cleethorpes Civic Offices Car Park, Cleethorpes

Did you know, 4500 businesses (around 98% of all businesses) in North East Lincolnshire are currently classed as micro and small businesses, employing up to 49 staff each, with 4005 of those (around 87% of all businesses) classed as micro businesses, employing up to 9 staff.

North East Lincolnshire Council Leader, Cllr Philip Jackson, said: “Christmas is such a busy time for our local independent businesses. The period leading up to the big day can often generate a sizeable proportion of annual profit and can set businesses on a good footing for the coming months ahead.

“We are encouraging as many people in the borough as possible to show our high streets and small businesses some love and support, and share their great experiences online.”

Local small businesses wanting to join the campaign and make the most of the opportunity offered by the day should visit the Small Business Saturday website to download free marketing materials including informational posters to display online, in shop windows plus social media graphics and suggested social media posts to use.

There are also a number of free webinars businesses can join being held between now and 3 December. The SBS Tour is once again stopping in Grimsby on Thursday 13 November and will be visiting businesses in the area on the day.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE STAR VISITOR ON OUR SALTMARSH?

A Glossy Ibis, usually found in Southern Europe, has been delighting birdwatchers at Cleethorpes Local Nature Reserve for the past month. This juvenile bird is part of a record influx this autumn, with over 600 ibises recorded across Britain and Ireland in September.

Once a rare migrant, the Glossy Ibis is now establishing itself as a breeding species in the UK. It attempted to breed at Gibraltar Point, south of Skegness, in 2014 without success and later successfully bred at a site in Cambridgeshire in 2022. While the individual visiting Cleethorpes may not stay until spring, its presence suggests sightings may become more common in years to come.

Slightly larger than a Curlew, the Ibis uses its long, curved bill to probe for invertebrates in wetlands. This bird has been favouring the saltmarsh lagoon. Juveniles are dark brown but adults, in good light, shimmer with bronze, purple and green – hence the name “Glossy”.

The first record of a Glossy Ibis in North East Lincolnshire was in June this year when an adult bird visited Cress Marsh near Stallingborough. The Cleethorpes bird has drawn visitors from near and far, proving that our coastline is a fantastic winter birdwatching destination.

Josh Forrester, Coastal Ranger with the Cleethorpes DUNE Project (funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund), said:

“It’s always a treat to see a rarity like the Glossy

Ibis locally. It has given many people fantastic views and photo opportunities. With the recent cold snap, I wonder if it will stick around?

“Whilst out surveying on our coast, a group of 12 birdwatchers from Berkshire - touring the Lincolnshire coast - stopped by to see the Ibis. This shows that our area is a top destination for winter birdwatching, especially with the tens of thousands of wetland birds that can be seen on the Humber Estuary!

“As always, our coast belongs to wildlife too –please enjoy responsibly and avoid causing disturbance to feeding or roosting birds”.

Enjoy our coastline responsibly:

Cleethorpes Local Nature Reserve is part of an internationally important and legally protected wetland – the Humber Estuary European Marine Site. You can help to protect its wildlife by:

Staying on footpaths

• Keeping dogs under control

• Moving away if birds seem disturbed

• Avoiding the salt marsh and sand banks –especially where there are large congregations of birds

CLASSIC IBIZA’S

RETURN TO BURGHLEY HOUSE NEXT SUMMER

Classic Ibiza, sponsored by Adnams, will be returning to the stunning grounds of Lincolnshire’s Burghley House on Saturday 25 July and is promising to take the family-friendly concert to even greater heights. Tickets go on general release today and following the resounding success of the show’s 10th anniversary tour this summer are expected to be in high demand.

To illustrate this, the team behind Classic Ibiza conducted an audience survey this autumn, with 70% of the 663 respondents rating the show 10/10, with an average overall rating of 9.1.

Commenting on this summer’s sold-out show at Burghley House, one audience member said: “The music was amazing! Such talent. Knew every tune and was a great atmosphere. We had such a fab time.”

Known for collaborating with the likes of Groove Armada and Robert Miles, Stephen Hussey’s 32-piece Urban Soul Orchestra will be leading proceedings once more with party-starter extraordinaire DJ Goldierocks. They’ll be taking the Burghley House audience on a high-octane journey through the biggest anthems in dance music history, all accompanied by a spectacular laser and light show. Other artists appearing in the line-up will be announced over the coming months.

Classic Ibiza’s Lisa Ward comments: “We know how much our amazing Burghley House audience loved USO’s fast-paced set of house classics this summer, so we’re planning to turn up the dial even more. Watch this space for other things we’ve got up our sleeve – all I can say at this stage is that it’s gonna be one helluva ride!”

Concertgoers are able to bring their own food and drink to the show or visit the Adnams bar and on-site catering village. Car-parking is free, and attendees can also take advantage of a staggered payment system, where tickets can be purchased in three separate instalments.

TOYS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY!

Following the official unveiling of the DreamToys list 2025, Smyths, Tritton Retail Park, Lincoln; The Entertainer, Freshney Place Shopping Centre, Grimsby; The Entertainer, St Marks Shopping Centre, Lincoln and The Entertainer, 29-31 Southgate, Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire are running a dream giveaway for local children, with the chance to win all the toys from the list – giving Lincolnshire youngsters 15 extra reasons to be jolly this Christmas.

With this year’s selection of must-have toys, gadgets and games, the DreamToys list is the most authoritative prediction of what are expected to be the hottest new toys on the high street for the festive season. It is the only list selected by an independent panel of toy retailers and toy experts from

small independents to large national chains.

Now, in a bid to spread some extra festive cheer, lucky children from across Lincolnshire will be given the chance to bag all the toys, just in time for Christmas.

To enter, children simply need to visit one of their local participating stores with a parent or guardian, before midnight on Wednesday 10 December, and scan the QR code in store to complete the online form. To be eligible, the lucky winner must be available to collect the 15 toys from the store they entered in, from Saturday 13 until Sunday 21 December.

Paul Reader, DreamToys Chairman at the Toy Retailers Association, which

is hosting the competition, said: “This Christmas we wanted to spread seasonal cheer across Lincolnshire by giving local youngsters the chance to get their hands on the ultimate Christmas wish list.

“DreamToys is a joyful way to unwrap the magic of this time of year and remind families that getting out onto the high street to shop local is exciting, rewarding, and full of surprises –especially with a prize like this up for grabs!

“We’re excited to welcome local families into participating stores to make Christmas 2025 even more memorable for Lincolnshire youngsters as the festive countdown officially begins.”

TOYS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY

This year, some very lucky local children could find an extra-special surprise waiting under the tree. A group of toy retailers across the region are giving young visitors the chance to win the entire DreamToys list – 15 of the most sought-after toys and games for Christmas, as selected by an independent panel of experts.

With participating stores in Lincoln, Scunthorpe and Grimsby, families

can enter simply by scanning a QR code during their visit before 10 December. For one fortunate child, it means Christmas morning could be everything they’ve dreamed of – and more.

Alongside trees, Roxie’s Roots also offers beautiful handmade wreaths, seasonal garden essentials, festive decorations and plenty of gift inspiration. It’s the perfect stop for anyone looking to make their home feel extra magical this year.

MAKING TIME FOR WHAT MATTERS MOST

Beyond the presents and seasonal sparkle, Christmas is about connection, slowing down, gathering with loved ones, and enjoying simple moments. Whether that’s curling up with a film, visiting a market, sharing a meal, or taking a frosty walk, these are the memories that last.

However you celebrate this year, may your days be filled with warmth, laughter and festive wonder. Here’s to a Christmas 2025 that’s joyful and unforgettable.

PARKWAY’S CHRISTMAS MAGIC PYJAMAS, PANTO AND PLENTY OF POPCORN

This December, a trip to Parkway Cinemas offers far more than the usual festive favourites and big winter releases. The chain has lined up a programme of Christmas treats designed to make your visit feel truly special.

As one of the UK’s most established independent cinema groups, Parkway has been entertaining audiences since 1983. Founded by Gerald Parkes and his wife Denise, the family business has earned its reputation by focusing on quality service and a genuine passion for great cinema.

“We’ve always wanted Parkway to feel like more than just a place to watch films,” says Richard Parkes, who now runs the company with his brother Gerrard and mother Denise following

CLEETHORPES Parkway is the largest independent cinema in the UK. The nine-screen cinema also has a fully equipped live stage, which will host “The Snow Queen” Pantomime with Talegate Theatre this year.

Parkway also operates in Beverley, Barnsley and Workington. “Beverley celebrates its 10th birthday this year, and we’re working hard to get our newest venue in Grimsby open in the next year or so too – there’s lots of great stuff coming soon!

Gerald’s passing in 2013. Gerald, who received an MBE for his contribution to the industry, believed that the magic was in the details. “It’s the atmosphere, the food, the way people come together. That’s what makes it special,” Richard adds.

A highlight of the season is the return of Parkway’s hugely popular Polar Express Pyjama Parties, which sell out year after year. Expect hot chocolate, sweet treats, snow effects and, if you’re lucky, a visit from the Conductor himself.

If you’re in the mood for more festive cheer, Parkway is also screening much-loved Christmas classics alongside major new releases including WICKED, Zootropolis and the latest Avatar film. The Event Cinema programme also brings something special for December, with André Rieu’s Merry Christmas concert and the treasured ballet The Nutcracker gracing the big screen.

The Playhouse Cinema is believed to be the oldest cinema in Lincolnshire, opening just before Woodhall Spa’s Kinema in the Woods in 1922. Originally converted from a Victorian chapel dating from 1821.

“It’s not just about watching a film; it’s about creating unforgettable memories one screen at a time”.

Every child will receive a special Christmas gift and have the chance to capture a professional digital photo with Santa Claus. The Meet Santa experience is £11 per child and is running from 23 November to 24 December. At Dobbies Boston

This year every Meet Santa ticket sold will help support The Dumyat Project. Dobbies was founded in Scotland in 1865, and as the 160th year celebrations wrap up, Dobbies are turning to the future, with every grotto

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN LINCOLNSHIRE

As Christmas approaches and Lincolnshire’s high streets begin to glow, many of us start the search for gifts that feel personal and meaningful. While big-name retailers have their convenience, there is something far more rewarding about buying local, discovering presents with personality, crafted by independent makers, and supporting businesses at the heart of our communities.

Jewellery is always a favourite at this time of year, and local jewellers offer far more variety than people often expect. Alongside new pieces, many independent shops also stock second hand and vintage jewellery, giving shoppers the chance to choose something beautifully unique without the premium price tag. Whether it is a delicate silver necklace, a statement ring or a vintage brooch with a story behind it, jewellery from a local jeweller feels considered and special.

Art for the home is another gift that stands out long after the tree comes down. Lincolnshire is home to a vibrant community of artists producing everything from coastal landscapes to abstract prints, ceramics and textile pieces. A painting, print or handcrafted item makes a thoughtful and lasting gift, transforming a wall or room and becoming part of someone’s everyday life. Many galleries and small studios hold festive open days, making it easier to browse,

chat to the artists and find something one of a kind.

For those who prefer practical gifts, local hardware shops and garden centres offer excellent choices, especially for anyone who enjoys DIY or tending the garden. Quality tools, home repair kits, gardening gloves, planters or even the latest power tools all make useful presents that will be appreciated long after Christmas. These are the kinds of gifts that do not just look

good under the tree, but genuinely help people get things done in the year ahead.

If you are looking for something a little different, Lincolnshire’s independent shops and Christmas markets are full of unique finds. From handmade candles and artisan soaps to local honey, jams, crafts and personalised presents, the county’s small makers and traders provide no end of inspiration. Christmas markets in towns and villages across the county are particularly good for discovering gifts you will not see anywhere else.

December shopping is not only about presents. Food plays a huge role in the season, and Lincolnshire’s local butchers offer some of the best festive produce, from traditional turkeys to beef joints, pork, sausages and more. Many also offer Christmas hampers, which can be a surprisingly cost effective way to stock up on quality meats and trimmings. These hampers often include cuts you might normally buy separately, bundled into a better value package, helping families save money without compromising on flavour or freshness.

Local farm shops and artisan food producers are also ideal for festive extras. Think handmade mince pies, cheeses, chutneys, freshly baked bread, seasonal vegetables and sweet treats for the Christmas table. Many also offer ready made hampers, which work beautifully as gifts for food lovers.

Another great option is gifting experiences, which more people are choosing each year. Local businesses

such as spas, restaurants, escape rooms, workshops, craft studios and attractions often offer gift vouchers. These make excellent presents for those who prefer memories over objects and they help support local venues during the quieter months.

Choosing to shop locally this Christmas means more than ticking off a list. It supports the businesses that give Lincolnshire its character, keeps skills alive and helps

ensure our high streets stay vibrant. Whether you are buying jewellery with a story, artwork for someone’s home, practical gifts for the year ahead or delicious festive food, local shopping adds something special to the season.

This Christmas, let your gifts and your festive feast celebrate the very best of Lincolnshire.

THE JOURNEY AND ART OF

JOE GALINDO

Born in West Yorkshire, artist Joe Galindo transformed global travels and diverse life experiences into a bold, expressive style, creating distinctive contemporary animal portraits using inventive techniques and unconventional tools.

Joe Galindo was born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire in 1994. He showed talent with a pencil at an early age and years down the line, after university and several 9-5 jobs, he chose to put his ability to use. Painting pets, footballers, musicians and taking requests from social media to fund his endeavours, he then launched his popular abstract landscapes into galleries.

However, at the age of 24, he felt the need for change, put down the brush and spontaneously left his hometown to live in Vietnam. His travels then took him all across Asia before landing in Australia. It was here where he began to paint again, and began selling in Melbourne and Sydney. Always on the look-out for different and interesting art, Galindo was continually inspired by artists he met overseas, alongside the jungles, coastlines and wildlife he encountered on the way. In 2022, after a pit stop in Sri

Lanka for one last taste of Asian life, he returned home to rekindle his passion for creation and pursue his purpose in life.

The key to Galindo’s unique style is the inventive ways to apply paint to the canvas. By using different techniques and mediums on top of one another, depth and contrast is created. Powerful contemporary colours are abstractly incorporated with details of wild animals in a loose, energetic style, which combine for an unusual but satisfying end product that demands attention and allows each person to interpret them individually. FRESH STARTS AND FESTIVE FINISHING TOUCHES FOR YOUR HOME

December is the perfect time to focus on your home, whether you are settling into a new place, planning a move in the new year, or simply giving your current space a seasonal boost. With colder days ahead, small updates, smarter choices and thoughtful touches can make your home feel warm, welcoming and ready for winter.

December is a month when many of us naturally turn our attention to home life. The colder weather encourages us indoors, the evenings arrive earlier, and before long we are thinking about the spaces where we spend the most time. Whether you are settling into a new home, planning to buy a new build in the new year, or giving your current place a quick refresh before Christmas, this is a great moment to take stock of what you want your home to feel like.

For anyone considering a move in 2026, December is a good time to explore what is available on the property market. Many developers are already promoting new build homes ready for early next year,

with attractive incentives such as shared ownership, part exchange, and low deposit schemes. These options can make the move more manageable, especially if you are looking to sell your current home without the stress of a long chain. With new build properties, you also benefit from modern layouts, energy efficient designs and the blank canvas many buyers love.

If you are staying in your current home, December is a smart time to think about UPVC double glazing upgrades. With winter temperatures dropping, replacing older windows can make a huge difference to warmth and efficiency. Modern UPVC frames are low maintenance, secure, and available in a wide range of finishes to suit both traditional and contemporary homes. Not only can upgraded windows help reduce heating bills, but they also improve sound insulation, ideal when you want a quieter, cosier living space over the festive period.

If you have recently moved, you may still

be finding your feet, and that is perfectly normal. The busy run up to Christmas can make unpacking feel like another job on the list, but small additions can make a big difference. A warm rug, new cushions, or a simple centrepiece on the dining table can give a room a lift while you plan bigger changes for the new year.

For those staying put but wanting a fresh look, December is ideal for tackling smaller improvements. A new lamp to brighten dark corners, updated curtains to help keep the heat in, or even rearranging furniture can make your home feel more comfortable for winter. Many people also use this time to plan decorating or renovation projects for January, whether that is repainting the living room, giving the kitchen a refresh, or updating flooring.

Of course, Christmas décor plays its part too. You do not need to go overboard, even a few well chosen touches help create a welcoming atmosphere. Natural greenery, warm lighting and a neatly dressed tree can make your home feel festive without adding clutter.

Whether you are searching for a new home in the new year, giving your current one a seasonal refresh, or simply enjoying time indoors with family, December is the perfect moment to think about how you want your home to work for you.

As we dash through December, busy with preparations, it’s easy to overlook the story behind that cheerful Christmas tree standing proudly in our homes. A Christmas tree doesn’t grow overnight; in fact, it can take nearly a decade of careful nurturing and dedication to create that perfectly shaped tree. We manage a Christmas tree plantation, and we tend to them all year round.

1. PREPARING THE LAND FOR PLANTING

Before we can plant a single tree, there’s a lot of groundwork to be done. Preparing the land involves clearing debris, removing weeds, and occasionally adding fertilisers to enrich the soil. It’s essential to keep the area free from animal pests, which can damage young trees. This usually means installing specific fencing, ensuring a safe space where the seedlings can thrive from the moment they’re planted.

2. PLANTING THE YOUNG TREES

Once the land is prepped, it’s time to plant the young trees. Each tree is carefully placed by hand, usually in winter, when the soil is more workable. We plant them in rows with 1-2 metres of space between each, giving them ample room to grow and shape themselves without crowding.

3. YEARS OF CARE AND MAINTENANCE

The journey from planting to harvesting takes patience. Most Christmas trees, like the popular Nordmann Fir, take between 5 and 8 years to reach the ideal height and shape. During these years, we invest a

significant amount of time in maintaining each tree, such as weed control, pest and disease management and pruning for shape.

Once you’ve picked out the perfect tree, there are a few things you can do to ensure it remains fresh and vibrant:

• Buying directly from a local Christmas tree farm ensures that your tree is as fresh as possible. Many farms also allow you to cut your own tree, guaranteeing it’s as fresh as can be.

• Store it outside first. Once you get your tree home, keep it outside in a cool, dry place (like a porch or shed) for a day or two before bringing it inside. Place it in a bucket of water and keep it out of sight to prevent any holiday mishaps.

• Before setting it up indoors, cut about 3 cm off the bottom of the tree’s trunk. This fresh cut allows the tree to absorb water more efficiently. Find a spot for your tree that’s away from heat sources such as radiators and fireplaces. Heat can dry out your tree quickly, leading to needle loss.

• Place the tree in a specially designed stand that holds water. Refill the water regularly— your tree can drink 2-3 pints of water a day! Some people add a bit of sugar to the water, which may help with needle retention.

So, the next time you bring a Christmas tree into your home, remember the dedication and care that went into its growth over the years. It’s more than just a festive decoration; it’s the result of a year-round commitment to quality and sustainability.

New year, new garden! We’ll design a space you’ll love for years to come. Contact us today to start the process.

MOTORING INTO DECEMBER

WINTER MOTORING ADVICE FOR SMOOTHER, SAFER AND STRESS FREE CHRISTMAS TRAVEL.

December brings with it a mix of excitement, celebration and, for drivers, a whole new set of motoring considerations. Whether you are planning festive journeys, preparing your car for winter conditions or looking ahead to upgrading your vehicle in the new year, this is the ideal time to take stock before the busiest travel period of the season.

As temperatures drop, the most important priority is ensuring your car is ready for winter roads. Cold weather has a habit of revealing problems that stayed hidden during summer, so a simple winter check can save time and stress later on.

Tyres should be your starting point. Grip is crucial when roads turn slippery, so make sure tread depth is above the legal minimum and consider switching to all season or winter tyres for added confidence. It is also worth checking your coolant levels, battery condition and screenwash, which should be winter ready to prevent freezing.

Lighting becomes more important at this time of year. With longer nights and misty mornings, clear visibility is essential. Give your headlights and brake lights a quick clean, and replace any dull bulbs. It takes just a moment but can make a huge difference when driving through dark countryside or heavy festive traffic.

For drivers with electric cars, winter adds a few extra considerations. Cold weather can reduce battery efficiency, which means range can drop noticeably

on frosty mornings. One of the simplest ways to improve performance is by preconditioning the battery before you set off. Most modern EVs allow you to warm the battery and cabin while the car is still plugged in, using mains power rather than draining the battery itself.

Preconditioning helps the battery reach its optimum operating temperature, improving efficiency and restoring much of the range lost in cold weather. It also means the car is warm, demisted and ready to drive the moment you leave the house, avoiding heavy use of heaters on the road. For longer Christmas journeys, scheduling preconditioning can make winter driving far smoother and ensures you get the best from your EV even on the coldest December mornings.

December is also one of the most popular months for test driving cars, as many manufacturers begin promoting next year’s models. If you are thinking about changing your vehicle in early 2026, now is a good time to explore what is available. Hybrid and electric cars continue to grow

in popularity as running costs fall, and dealerships often release attractive end of year incentives.

Families preparing for long Christmas journeys may also be considering something more practical. SUVs and crossovers remain popular, offering extra boot space for luggage, gifts and the occasional dog. Safety features such as lane assist, improved traction control and automatic emergency braking are now common, providing reassurance when driving in winter weather.

Of course, festive motoring is not just about the car. Planning your route, allowing extra time and packing essentials such as blankets, chargers, snacks and de icer can make any winter drive more comfortable. A little preparation goes a long way.

Whether you are tackling the Christmas shopping run, visiting family or looking forward to a fresh start with a new car in the new year, December is a great moment to ensure you are ready for the road ahead.
