AaGlobal Partners with Humberside Airport to Promote the Region to International Business

A leading language services provider is talking up the region as a brilliant place for business after partnering with Humberside Airport for its latest digital marketing campaign.

AaGlobal Language Services is targeting international business travellers directly by using the airport’s screens to promote “All Languages, All Subjects”, which marks the 15th anniversary this year of AaGlobal’s arrival in Hull.

Kirk Akdemir, CEO of AaGlobal, said: “Having established ourselves as the market leader in our region we feel now is the right time to reach out to a wider business audience with our services.

“The digital campaign reflects how we have grown and developed as a business since expanding to Hull in 2011, investing in technology and taking a more innovative approach.”

AaGlobal placed itself at the heart of the regional business community as soon as it headed north from its original base in Worcester and opened a second office next to Hull marina.

The company joined the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce and became a major sponsor of the organisation’s International Trade Centre, its annual Expo and the awards held every year by Hull Business Improvement District (HullBID).

In March 2024 Kirk further underlined his commitment to the region by beginning a two-year term as Chamber President. By then AaGlobal had taken on new premises at Stonefield House in the centre of Hull, established the city as its headquarters and built an international team of more than 15,000 linguists covering over 500 languages and dialects.

AaGlobal’s involvement in the Chamber, coupled with its significant day-to-day workload in the private sector, has become a route to supporting the wider business networks. As a key player in the public sector, the company also steps up to help community and charitable organisations.

Projects have included sponsoring Fitmums and Friends, entering fundraising teams in the Race for Life, working with volunteers on health, youth and conservation campaigns and donating 1,000 re-usable water bottles to NHS workers during the pandemic.

Kirk said: “From day one, even when we were a much smaller business with a core of just two or three people, we always felt we should give back to society as we work across so many different communities.

“We also employ people from all sorts of backgrounds and we recognise that we have opportunities to help people to integrate in the wider communities.”

“We’re more than a local business now and, as we have grown, it’s only fair that we have expanded our community activities as well. But we are still following the culture and ideals that we have always had of working in partnership to build our local economy and our local communities.”

beyond the languages of nations and cultures to also master the terminology of business.

New Head of Commercial for the Humber Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s largest port operator is delighted to announce Paul Litten as the new Head of Commercial (Humber). He will now lead on a permanent basis the commercial team responsible for the UK’s largest gateway for trade with the world by volume, across a wide range of freight types and port capabilities.

Paul, who has worked for ABP for nearly ten years, has spent his whole career in commercial and customer service roles, brings a track record of developing innovative solutions for customers’ needs and achieving leading customer satisfaction levels. Paul has been supporting the team on the Humber on an interim basis for several months in addition to being Head of Commercial across Wales and Short Sea Ports (WSSP) Paul Litten, said: “I’m thrilled to be leading the commercial team serving customers using ABP’s four Humber ports. These ports are a UK leader, and with the capacity and capabilities they offer, make them the number one choice for customers regionally and nationally.

Stena Line and Associated British Ports to begin work on new multi-million pound Immingham terminal Leading ferry company, Stena Line, and the UK’s largest port operator, Associated British Ports (ABP), are to commence work on a new freight ferry terminal at the Port of Immingham. The new terminal represents a joint investment of more than £200 million in the port and a boost to the Humber region of England where the unaccompanied freight market has been steadily growing.

Located in Lincolnshire, Immingham is becoming a strategic hub for Stena Line, which currently runs two daily services from the Humber region to The Netherlands.

ABP’s four Humber ports collectively already make up the UK’s number 1 gateway for trade by volume.

The new Roll on – Roll off (RoRo) terminal, known as the Immingham Eastern RoRo Terminal (IERRT), will provide access to the main Humber Estuary, allowing for quicker sailing times and the option to use larger vessels to cater for increased freight demand from exporters and importers from across the region and the rest of the UK. Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line said: “Stena Line has 20 routes across Northern Europe and the Mediterranean and Immingham port is a key part of that network. This project highlights our ongoing commitment to the North East of England but will also be integral to the expansion of freight operations on our routes between the UK and Continental Europe to meet demand.”

ABP nets Grimsby Seafood Village Associated British Ports’ (ABP), the UK’s largest ports group has extended its property portfolio with the acquisition of the long leasehold interest of Grimsby Seafood Village, a premier seafood processing centre. The purchase provides future security and support for an important hub of UK food production.

The multi-let industrial site spanning over four acres is located on ABP’s Port of Grimsby in the Humber. The purchase of the long leasehold lasting 125 years, which ABP had previously granted to the owners of the complex, sees the acquisition add a new and highly complementary element to the Humber property portfolio.

The 70,000 square foot site comprises 21 units with several fish processing businesses including. In 2010 the complex was built and operated by the Great Grimsby Seafood Village Limited, the facility went on to win the North East Lincolnshire Economic Investment Award in 2014, recognising its vital contribution to the local economy.

Andrew Dawes, Regional Director of the Humber ports said: “The acquisition of the Grimsby Seafood Village strengthens Associated British Ports’ commitment to Keeping Britain Trading.

It complements our bold expansion at the Stallingborough Interchange—where we’re investing in over 227 acres to deliver state of-the-art port logistics, green energy, and industrial space ensuring ABP continues to Keep Britain Trading.”

ABP breaks ground on major Humber industrial and logistics scheme Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s largest port operator, has started construction works on the first phase of its major Humber development at its Helm @Immingham site, the most significant development of its kind in the region for decades This first phase of development at this 227-acre strategic location follows the grant of reserved matters planning from North-East Lincolnshire Council for 103,000 square feet of modern purpose-built industrial and logistics space.

The location is close to the A180 and the two major Humber estuary ports. The eight units’ range in size from 4,820 sq. ft. to 26,797 sq. ft. The units will be targeted at small to medium sized enterprises in energy venture startups, port logistics, engineering, manufacturing and distribution.

JLL, Gent Visick and PPH have been selected as agents to market the scheme going forwards.

Helm @ Immingham can provide a further 1.1m sq. ft. of logistics and manufacturing space, along with 90 acres of automotive open storage with on-site renewable energy generation and extensive biodiversity improvements.

Government must expand apprenticeship support for SMEs, says Logistics UK SMEs are critical drivers of youth opportunity, local prosperity and social mobility, and decisive action is needed from government to help smaller businesses recruit apprentices, according to business group Logistics UK. In an open letter to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Rt Hon Pat McFadden signed by the group, alongside 28 other business leaders and sector stakeholders, failure to do so risks losing entry-level pathways that build skills, confidence and careers for the next generation.

The letter, signed by partners of Apprenticeships Work, a campaign spearheaded by education charity Edge Foundation, urges more government support for SMEs to recruit apprentices highlighting how it could unlock opportunities and growth across the country.

“SMEs often struggle to engage with the apprenticeship system,” said Bethany Windsor, Head of Skills Policy at Logistics UK. “Their businesses make up 99.7% of the logistics sector and 99.8% of businesses of the economy. Yet nationally, across all sectors, SMEs employ only 37% of apprentices, a fall of 17 percentage points since the Apprenticeship Levy was introduced in 2017.

“The decline needs to be addressed urgently. With the right support, SMEs can be instrumental in driving inclusive economic growth and opportunity.”

The letter to the Secretary of State sets out the need for decisive action from government to address the shortfall in SME uptake, including establishing a coordinated framework to allow them to navigate apprenticeship funding and regulation, committing to a measurable increase in SME apprenticeship starts, and giving smaller businesses a greater voice in shaping apprenticeship design.

25 years of UK offshore wind: Ørsted celebrates Grimsby’s central role in powering Britain As the UK celebrates 25 years of clean electricity from offshore wind, Ørsted is shining a spotlight on Grimsby - a town that has become one of the most important offshore wind hubs in the world.

In 2024, offshore wind generated a record 17% of the UK’s electricity (48.5TWh). A significant amount of that power comes from wind farms operated from Ørsted’s East Coast Hub at Grimsby’s Royal Docks, where teams operate and maintain offshore wind farms around the country – including six off the East coast - supplying millions of homes and businesses across the country.

Grimsby offshore success is powered by people. Today, almost 700 people work across Ørsted’s East Coast operations and Humberside Airport – from turbine technicians and marine specialists to data analysts and apprentices. Ørsted’s workforce in the Humber spans 148 different job roles, with almost 50% working as wind turbine technicians carrying out world-class offshore operations and maintenance. Threequarters of Ørsted’s east coast team live within an hour of the town, showing just how deeply the industry is rooted in the local community.

Alongside clean energy, jobs and skills, Ørsted continues to invest heavily in local communities. Since 2016, the East Coast Community Fund has awarded more than £4 million to nearly 300 projects across coastal Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Each year, up to £75,000 is dedicated to the Skills Fund, helping people gain qualifications and access new careers. More than £600,000 has supported 33 skills and training projects so far.

One recent grant of £11,015 supported Franklin Sixth Form College’s sixth annual STEM event, which drew a record 1,789 students from 23 local schools. Through hands-on workshops and a Careers & Progression Evening featuring more than 100 exhibitors, students gained insight into real-world careers in engineering, renewable energy, healthcare, game design and more.

Exploring the visitors’ centre at the East Coast Hub

Emma Swinburn, Franklin Sixth Form College, said: “This event is fundamental in raising awareness and aspirations. We’re so grateful to the East Coast Community Fund for making it possible.” Ørsted has also donated £1 million towards the Horizon Youth Zone, opening in 2026, and has supported the Ørsted Great Grimsby 10k for a decade. Ørsted’s commitment to the region continues with Hornsea 3, set to become the world’s largest offshore wind farm when completed in 2027. It will generate clean power for 3.3 million homes, ensuring Grimsby stays at the centre of the UK’s renewable energy future.

Grimsby’s leadership has even attracted global attention, with visits from Guy Martin (for Great British Power Trip) and CBS 60 Minutes, both highlighting the town’s role at the forefront of the UK’s clean-energy transition.

Ørsted’s East Coast Hub is also home to an official Guinness World Record holder, with Hornsea 2 recognised as the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

Its 165 turbines capable of producing enough low-cost, renewable electricity to power more than 1.4 million UK homes.

Leading the Way in Accessibility: The Story and Impact of About Access An accessibility business which started out studying such everyday obstacles as steps in shops and obstructive street furniture has marked its 25th year travelling the world to advise blue-chip employers on how to keep their premises open to people who can’t walk, see or hear.

About Access also helps businesses work with people living with the countless other conditions – many of them hidden impairments – which can limit an individual’s ability to work, or overcome with adjustments which may come at an initial cost but can pay for themselves many times over.

Ian Streets, founder and MD of About Access, launched the company in November 2000 after witnessing first hand, from family experience and his own career in retail, the challenges facing people who have a disability.

From initially providing advice in the Hull and Humber region he expanded nationally and then internationally, taking on projects in the USA, Canada and Saudi Arabia and – as 2025 drew to a close – India, China and Japan.

At the heart of raising awareness of accessibility issues is the carrot and stick approach. Under the Equality Act 2010, discrimination against someone on the ground of disability can bring severe financial penalties and a bad reputation.

But if you get things right you can tap into a customer base worth an estimated £249bn a year in the UK. That’s the spending power of disabled people and their companions, and you miss out if they can’t access what you are selling.

You can also recruit from a larger talent pool – a big plus in a time of skills shortages – and guard against losing key members of staff if they acquire an impairment.

Ian said: “One change we have seen over the years is a different attitude among employers. They are less likely to see accessibility measures as a cost, and more likely to identify them as an investment which enables them to sell to more customers and clients.

If your premises are inaccessible, you risk losing a valuable colleague – and all of their insight, expertise and experience – if you can’t make reasonable adjustments to accommodate any challenges they develop with mobility, vision, hearing or whatever.”

The access audit involves conducting a comprehensive inspection and assessment of a building, an environment, or a service to make sure they are safe, accessible and comfortable for the disabled community.

More apprentices join Siemens talent pipeline at Goole Rail Village • Newest intake brings number of entry-level trainees across the site to over 35 • Siemens Mobility currently supports 175 apprentices on the programme across UK&I • Apprenticeships range from Level 3 to Level 6 across over 20 UK&I locations, covering diverse roles in engineering, manufacturing, and operations Siemens Mobility has welcomed the latest group of apprentices to its Goole Rail Village, bringing the number of entry-level trainees across the site to over 35.

Apprentices at the Goole Rail Village are actively engaged in assembling Piccadilly line trains for Transport for London, directly supporting Siemens Mobility’s investment in UK rail industry skills.

The business’s apprenticeship programme welcomed 25 new individuals across the UK and Ireland, reflecting UK-wide commitment to talent development.

This latest intake contributes to the 175 apprentices currently on the programme, building on the 150 who are already enrolled on different apprenticeships.

Mark Speed, General Manager at Siemens Mobility’s Goole Rail Village, said: “We’re committed to creating a powerful pipeline of talent and a lasting legacy of skills for our business and the wider industry.

That’s why we have brought on board apprentices from the early days of the Goole project and continue to do so. This latest intake at Goole further contributes to our ongoing investment in developing young talent to help shape the future of the UK rail industry. Apprentices in our earlier cohorts are already making a significant impact in their teams, here at Goole and elsewhere in the business, and it’s fantastic to see their development and progress since joining us.

We’re excited to support our newest recruits as they begin their journey, and we can’t wait to see what they all go on to achieve.”

80% of those trains will be assembled in Goole, where Siemens also intends to assemble future battery bimode train orders for the UK. Goole Rail Village represents a significant investment of up to £240 million, creating up to 1,000 new jobs in the East Riding of Yorkshire, along with around 1,700 supply chain job opportunities.

Apprentices will gain invaluable experience in diverse roles such as Mechanical Fitter, Engineering Fitter, Maintenance Support, Manufacturing Technician, and Warehouse Management, all while combining practical experience with theoretical knowledge from York College.

Siemens Mobility took on board its first cohort of apprentices in Goole in 2020 during the early stages of the Rail Village development.

The majority of the first intake of 12 apprentices have progressed onto permanent roles within the business and are forging exciting careers with Siemens Mobility, at Goole and other locations.

How HETA Is Preparing the Next Generation of Engineers A major investment in technology is supporting employers across the north in developing digital techniques to upgrade their facilities and their workforce skills.

The project is consistent with ethos adopted from the outset by Humberside Engineering Training Association – investing to help businesses improve by providing the highest quality training.

As a collaboration with the University of Hull it keeps the organisation at the forefront of engineering training in the Humber region and further afield from its headquarters in Hull and centres in Grimsby and Scunthorpe.

Iain Elliott, CEO of HETA, said such ventures ensure the organisation stands ready to help the government deliver on its promise of a £725m package of reforms to the apprenticeship system, geared to ensure that 50,000 more young people benefit from skills delivery.

He said: “We’ve added six new standards to our apprenticeship offer for 2026, and I’m proud to say we’ve been on the front foot doing our utmost to meet this skills challenge.”

He said: “The government’s announcement came as we launched our employer recruitment process for our 2026 cohort. We want to equip 260 learners with the vital skills this area needs, providing opportunities for life.

“We’re delighted to work with colleagues at HETA to develop state-of-the-art training facilities and programmes, offering businesses and learners opportunities to be at the forefront of change in a rapidly evolving industry.”

“The desire is there, we witnessed record applications during 2025. The possibilities offered by trades are clear to school-leavers. The myth that university is the only successful outcome has been shattered, and rightly so. These careers offer remuneration that can often outstrip professional positions in other sectors at pace.”

The collaboration will create digital twins of existing training rigs, enabling businesses to try new ideas with zero risk to their current systems.

Iain added that HETA is seeing increasing numbers of apprentices emerge from their first year at the £5.5m Grimsby site, which opened in 2023.

One concern is uncertainty surrounding spending reviews, budgets and competitive investment rounds, but Iain said industry needs to be in a position to act quickly when opportunities arise.

He said: “There are few more concentrated areas where the skills challenge around engineering disciplines plays out in real time, than on the banks of the Humber. The industrial belt around the ‘Energy Estuary’ – the engine room of the UK – brings together power, refining and heavy process-led manufacturing, providing so many of the resources required for our daily lives “There is a huge requirement for engineers and that’s why I’m particularly enthused by the focus on engineering and targeted support for the SME sector. We work with many businesses who form the vital supply chain of skills and services required to maintain and expand the industrial might of the Humber region, and who will help deliver the incredible pipeline of projects.”

Do we really need anti-money laundering reforms?

We’ve recently had confirmation that the government is reforming the current anti-money laundering (AML) regime, making the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) the single supervisor for professional services.

Currently, UK AML policies are overseen by 23 different supervisors, including the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

The government says the reforms will “address deficiencies” in a regime that is currently “complex and disjointed”, resulting in a new system that is “cohesive and easily navigable”.

But this new approach is likely to make life more difficult for accountants up and down the country - increasing costs and regulatory burdens - so many in the profession have expressed significant reservations.

A time-consuming transition The government first published a review of the UK’s AML regime in 2022 and its consultation setting out proposed reforms was published in June 2023, so the industry has already waited three years for an update.

Now, the implementation of these changes is likely to be just as time-consuming. Even

the government itself has said that the timing of the change is “heavily dependent on the availability of parliamentary time”.

It’s going to take a long time to introduce the legislation needed to give the FCA powers to supervise lawyers and accountants, and it’s likely to take some time to wind up the existing supervision too. Then, once the new regime is in place, the time burden is likely to be passed onto accountants themselves.

Accountancy services are at a high risk of money laundering, so the silver lining of all this is that accountants will be held to a higher standard, potentially stopping criminality in its tracks. However, the reforms still present feasibility challenges for the government, the FCA and individual accounting groups, and it also means there will be valuable expertise lost among those who work for the current 23 supervisors.

Putting the ‘money’ in antimoney laundering There is currently a question mark around the funding behind these AML reforms as the transition is undoubtedly going to be a costly one.

There is speculation that the government will fund the transition from the Treasury out of general taxation. However, there’s also the possibility that the accounting businesses being supervised will need to pay a levy of some sort.

If this is the case, there will be an unwelcome additional cost for accountants - making business growth more challenging at a time when business confidence is already low.

What’s next?

The government has now published a separate consultation, which sets out proposals for the key duties, powers and accountability mechanisms the FCA will need to be an effective supervisor.

These AML reforms could represent the biggest change to compliance in a generation, but preparation is key to try and reduce the time and cost challenges that lie ahead.

New Horizon dawns for our borough As we say goodbye to 2025, North East Lincolnshire Council Leader, Cllr Philip Jackson, reflects on 12 months that has seen the authority’s plans to transform the borough taking shape.

“We can now see physical change around us – and with that will come opportunity for our businesses and our communities, as we move forward with a determination to improve our place.

The new OnSide Horizon Youth Zone is a scheme we should all be tremendously proud of. The derelict Grade II listed West Haven Maltings in our town centre looks fantastic and now houses this inspirational development, which will benefit so many young people – our adults of tomorrow.

Hull’s cultural credentials were further highlighted when National Geographic named it one of the top 25 places in the world to visit in 2026, underlining its appeal as a vibrant, world-class destination.

Living and working here offers the best of both worlds - a vibrant city centre and old town and a flourishing waterfront Fruit Market area.

It is also a leader in digital technology, being the UK’s first ‘full fibre city’, with ultrafast broadbands delivering speeds of one gigabit per second to the entire city and beyond.

Hull also has 5G and, with a new data centre, the city has a capability of more than 40,000 Mbps of connectivity which supports its smart city platform, meaning it can be used for the benefit of all.

East Bank Urban Village, the council’s ambitious 850-home regeneration project, to feature social and green spaces, continues to make progress and will continue at a pace in 2026.

This contributes towards meeting the council’s target of 2,500 new homes to meet the demand for city centre living.

The team is at the forefront of the UK’s thinking around flood management and climate change. It has helped establish Hull as one of a handful of Global Water Resilient cities, whilst championing the city and its strengths through the cultural, place-shaping and low-carbon agendas to create a citywide environment of collaboration and drive.

Elsewhere, the former Debenhams store on prospect street recently received planning approval for 178 stylish apartments.

The city is playing a central role in the green skills and digital revolution. A strong provision comes from the Outstanding-rated Ron Dearing University Technical College in the city centre and also from the Good-rated Hull Training and Adult Education service.

Introducing the University of Hull’s PFRlab Flooding is among the most urgent climate threats facing the UK. With an estimated 6.3 million homes currently at risk, and upward of 8 million expected to be at risk by 2050, the need for effective and accessible property-level flood resilience has never been clearer.

To boost this growing market, the University of Hull has launched a Property Flood Resilience Innovation and Testing Laboratory – the PFRlab.

Professor Stuart McLelland, Deputy Director of the University’s Energy and Environment Institute and research leader at the PFRlab, said: “Flooding is one the most urgent climate challenges facing the UK. We can’t prevent flooding altogether, but we can accelerate measures to better protect properties when flooding happens.

“PFRlab will drive innovation and greater confidence in a growing industry with world class experimental facilities and expertise supporting the development of tried and tested flood resilience products and technologies.”

Developed in partnership with the Environment Agency and Flood Re, and located at Hull’s iconic aquarium, The Deep, this independent facility is poised to become a national powerhouse in flood resilience innovation.
