Teknomek launches its Foreign Body Control Box to support audit-ready environments

New for 2024, and in response to BRCGS Food Safety Standard Issue 9, hygienic furniture specialist Teknomek has introduced its Foreign Body Control Box to its product range for the food processing sector.

The 304-grade stainless steel box is designed and manufactured by Teknomek to provide food processing companies with a process solution for controlling the risks of foreign body contamination. The box, which measures 252mm w x 96mm d x 186mm h, provides a central receptacle where any foreign bodies discovered within the food production area can be placed. With a removable tray, the contents of the box can be easily removed, investigated, and route cause analysis undertaken to minimise further incidences and prevent further non-conformances.

Antalis continues to expand internationally and has signed a binding agreement to acquire Pakella, a leading player in the distribution and manufacture of industrial and food packaging in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The UK’s leading innovator of high-performance nutrition has launched a new range of single nutrients

Antalis has signed a binding agreement to acquire Pakella, which specialises in the manufacturing and distribution of industrial and food packaging to various business customers.

Performance Lab - the UK’s leading innovators of high-performance nutrition - has expanded its range of plant-based supplements. Adding nine single nutrients, due for launch next month, February 2024.

Pakella is a leading packaging distributor in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia with a €15 million turnover in 2023 and 60 employees across its three distribution sites. The agreement is subject to the satisfaction of customary conditions including the approval of the Latvian competition authority.

Founded in 1996, the Pakella Group excels in the design and manufacture of made-to-measure industrial and food packaging, having developed unique and specific expertise in various sectors over more than 20 years, particularly in the food industry.

Antalis, already well established in Europe, continues to expand its presence in the packaging distribution market worldwide. Following the acquisition of Portuguese company 100 Metros at the beginning of 2024, Pakella will strengthen Antalis’ offering in the industrial and food packaging market in the Baltic countries.

Commenting on the acquisition, Hervé Poncin, Chief Executive Officer of Antalis, said: “The acquisition of Pakella is a great opportunity. It will enable Antalis to significantly expand its existing packaging distribution business in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Steve Marson from Scarborough has Ashwood of Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery been appointed as Marketing Manager at Hunmanby-based Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery.

Mr Marson, one of the original founders of Scarborough marketing agency, Marson Brothers, has been appointed to take the marketing of Yorkshire’s first whisky distillery to the next level, and is embracing the challenge: “I’m looking forward to working on a growing brand with such big ambitions,” he said.

Home compostability certification for Metsä Board paperboards

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, has achieved home compostability certification for all its white kraftliners and folding boxboards (excluding PE-coated grades). The certification was issued by DIN CERTCO based on the compliance with standard NF T 51-800.

“All our paperboards can be recycled, which is the preferable option when the packaging or food service container has served its purpose.

However, sometimes the packaging material can be stained by food, and then composting with biowaste is a good choice,” says Helena Moring-Vepsäläinen, Product Safety Manager at Metsä Board. “Our paperboards have had industrial compostability certification for several years now, and home compostability is one step further which is certainly welcomed by consumers.”

All Metsä Board paperboards are made of fresh wood fibres and are safe to use for sensitive end use applications. They are lightweight and made using mainly fossil free energy, hence contributing to a lower carbon footprint throughout the whole packaging value chain.

Premium Glass Jars for Craft Peanut Butter Brand A leading UK premium peanut butter brand has opted for quality packaging by switching to a bespoke glass jar designed and manufactured by Beatson Clark.

Described as ‘the Champagne of peanut butters’, ManiLife is made in the UK using peanuts grown and hand sorted on a single estate in Argentina.

Initially the product was sold in plastic tubs but ManiLife has now commissioned a bespoke 275g white flint glass jar from Beatson Clark, which has made its production process more sustainable and brought other benefits too.

“The new jar is a genuine pleasure to use,” said Stu Macdonald, founder of ManiLife. “We designed it to make it supremely spoonable and easy to stir and I think the feedback reflects that. Our customers like the fact that we’ve moved from plastic to glass, for a wide range of reasons. The general consensus is that it looks far better and is far easier to use, which was our main consideration. The jar looks bigger and more premium, and the customer experience has improved significantly, so we’ve definitely seen an increase in sales as a result.”

Stu added that using a UK supplier of glass packaging was also an important consideration.“We’re a UK based manufacturer and so are Beatson Clark – it’s good to keep it on the island!” he said.

ManiLife started in 2015 when its founder Stu Macdonald moved to Argentina and met a family who owned a peanut estate in Córdoba. The company still sources all its peanuts from this estate to this day.

Interfood announces promotion of Rob Unwin to Managing Director Food processing equipment specialist Interfood Technology has announced the latest move in the company’s ongoing development with the appointment of Rob Unwin as Managing Director.

Co-founder of Interfood and prior Managing Director, James Sydenham, comments – “This year sees the 25th anniversary for Interfood, and I think it’s the perfect time to step back and encourage the business to evolve. I am delighted that Rob has agreed to take on the MD role and I congratulate him on his thoroughly deserved promotion. It is an exciting time for the business and with his extensive experience of the food industry and his understanding of Interfood, our values and our partnership approach, Rob is in the prime position to continue the evolution of the business.”

After obtaining a degree in Food Technology, Rob initially took up a position with The Malton Food Group before joining Interfood Technology for the company’s launch in 2000. Having progressed from Divisional Manager through to Sales Director of Interfood’s Slicing Division (where he was responsible for the longstanding partnership with Weber), Rob was appointed Operations Director of the Group in 2017.

Commenting on his new role as MD, Rob said – “We will continue to develop our partnership philosophy that has been so integral to Interfood’s success. We have

always looked to do things slightly differently, working closely with our customers to create tailormade solutions.

Our focus is offering complete aftercare packages which recognise the importance of optimisation, training, and ongoing support, within the scope of being a total solutions provider. Whilst focusing on our core business within the meat sector, we will continue to expand our offering within related industries, prioritising our launch of the Interfood Bakery Division where we have recently attracted a number of quality suppliers.

“I am proud of the importance Interfood has always placed on investing in and developing its colleagues to create a strong team with wide ranging experience, industry knowledge and expertise. This is typified by the launch of our new graduate scheme through which we are developing the next generation of Interfood talent.”

James Sydenham is to remain active in the business as a Director and Shareholder and will focus on developing the supply base, including onboarding some new suppliers to further extend Interfood’s offering, while continuing to support Rob and the Management Team in taking the business forward.

Why Continue to Give Away Your Profits?

Strategies to Address Underfilling & Overfilling, Remain Legal & Reduce Wastage An article By Roy Green, Harford Control Ltd. February 2024 Billions of packages are being filled in factories around the world – coffee beans into box bottom pouches, whisky into bottles, tablets into medical packs, and many more. Two common challenges that factories often struggle to overcome are underfilling and overfilling. Both issues can lead to significant consequences for businesses, including product defects, recalls, wasted raw materials and packaging, customer dissatisfaction and brand damage.

Systematically Underfilling to Save Cost

When we conducted our research, we found that some factories in other countries deliberately underfill to save on the cost of raw materials. Customers end up paying for more than they receive. While most people may overlook this, some choose to take action against such practices.

Two customers in the US filed a lawsuit against a potato chips company for consistently underfilling their chip bags. Although nitrogen gas may contribute to keeping the chips fresh and damage-free during delivery, the net weight of the chips was 58% to 75% lower than the information labelled on the packages.

The lawsuit gained widespread coverage on news and social media platforms, leading to even more customer complaints and causing serious damage to the brand.

Unintentional Underfilling Bringing it closer to the UK manufacturing industry, there were still some underfilling incidents happening, even though Average Quantity has been the law for most pre-packaged consumer goods, produced and sold in the UK since 1979. A leading dairy plant pleaded guilty due to T2 failures within the Weights and Measures Act. This was attributed to inadequate testing procedures that had been in place for over 15 years. Though the underfilling was unintentional, it caused huge damage to the brand and the manufacturer was fined.

We can’t just assume that what was ‘good’ yesterday will be good enough tomorrow. Manufacturers need to revisit every aspect of the manufacturing processes and ask: Why? What? Where? When? Who? and How? And most accept answers like ‘We have always done it this way.’

Overfilling to Ensure Compliance & Protection from Risk Knowing the consequences of underfilling, many factories decided to take action to be compliant. With the introduction of Average Quantity Law, there was no longer a Minimum Quantity Law for most pre-packaged goods.

However, some companies continued to pack to what they called ‘Minimum Quantity.’ This simply meant that they were giving more product away in overfill, whilst gaining no greater legal protection.

Let’s have a look at some numbers.

Imagine you are a medium-sized whisky bottler producing, say, 10 million cases per annum. The industry standard for a case is 9 litres (based on 12 x 750ml bottles).

10 million cases at 9 litres per case equals 90 million litres. With just 1ml of overfill on average, this amounts to giving away 90,000 litres per year. As whisky must be matured in oak casks for at least 3 years before it can truly be called whisky, it has

Harford Control Ltd. to be worth at least £1 per litre at the time of bottling (3 years later). Thus, this must represent a giveaway cost of around £90,000 per annum on such a volume, per average of 1 ml in overfill.

A Few £Millions Spare?

What’s even worse, HMRC could raise an estimate as they are entitled to the excise duty on overfill, which could be traced back through the previous 6 years.

Out of interest, the excise duty charged on 40% strength spirit is £11.50 per litre.

The extent of risk is realised by doing the maths - 90,000 x £11.50 x 6 = £?

Don’t forget this is only based upon overfill of only 1ml per litre.

Several years ago, when an HMRC Inspector was asked for advice of “How much overfill is acceptable?”, the response (knowing nothing of process variation and capability) was “Zero – just get it right gentlemen!”

Strategies to Tackle Underfilling and Overfilling Being stuck between rising input prices, and little or no opportunity to pass on these rising costs to retailers, manufacturers need to do everything to protect consumers, their financial health and brand reputation. Optimising filling process should not be an option – why give it away?

Preventing underfilling, measuring and controlling overfilling, can significantly reduce production costs.

Food and drink makers secure Made Smarter backing Adoption programme backs 300th business to digitalise on fifth anniversary Donna Edwards, programme director, issues rallying call for more manufacturers to seek funded support

SME manufacturers in the food and drink sector are the latest to secure backing from Made Smarter’s trailblazing adoption programme.

Brightside Brewing Company, Just Bee Honey, Studio Bakery, Chandley Ovens, Harbourside Products and Northern Pasta Company are among the latest wave of businesses starting their digitalisation journey to benefit their bottom line and the environment.

It means 300 businesses have now received matched funding from the government-funded, industry-backed initiative, to adopt technologies as diverse as sensors, robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence (AI).

Allison Metcalf, Managing Director of Studio Bakery, used Made Smarter support to create a digital roadmap and then invest in a new cutting machine.

She said: “Working with Made Smarter has been transformational for our bakery business. At a time where we were rapidly expanding, they were there to support us. New technology has increased our productivity and made us more efficient.

We’re now able to meet our increased orders and we’re ready for the next stage of our expansion.”

With the Government committing to continue the North West adoption programme as part of a UK roll out, manufacturers are being urged to connect with Made Smarter to access the funded support on offer. This includes digital transformation workshops to create a digital roadmap, impartial and expert technology advice, leadership and skills training, as well as grant funding for digital internships and technology projects.

Boost E-commerce Efficiency with Southgate’s New WAT Tape Dispenser Southgate Global, a leader in the supply of packaging equipment, consumables and servicing in operational logistics and fulfilment, has launched a new Water Activated Tape Dispenser (WAT) to help speed up operations and reduce costs as the demand for e-commerce rises.

The Optimax OM700 WAT Dispenser has been designed specifically by Southgate’s specialist team for fast-paced operational logistics environments, as customers look to increase staff productivity to meet demand.

With UK e-commerce sales expected to reach £160.6 billion in 2024 and continue to grow at 4.1 per cent year on year to 2026 resulting in forecast sales of £194 billion by 2027, the need for efficiency in every aspect of operations is vital to give companies a performance edge.

Developed with high-volume, fast-past shipping in mind, the OM700 has quick tape output, outputting 60 metres per minute, pre-set buttons to auto dispense from 15cm to 145cm, a programme mode – to allow configuration of up to 6 different lengths in sequence via the digital display - plus the largest tape capacity in the industry - up to 255mm long and 80mm wide.

Phil O’Driscoll, Head of Innovation & New Product Development, explained how the expectation from customers to have deliveries that are quick, secure, and convenient is pushing operations and warehouse managers to find new ways to optimise their packing operations.

He described how this played a key part in the development of the OM700, “We recognised the pressures that fulfilment and distribution sites were under and looked to produce a product that would ensure fast and continuous packaging operations, while also offering considerable capital cost savings on other options.

“To find a solution that is informed by demand, we asked our customers to review their current equipment and share with us what is, and isn’t, working well. This is a process we follow with all new product development at Southgate, and ensures we are bringing products to the market that are going to make a difference.”

O’Driscoll added, “It was important when designing the OM700 that we weren’t just matching, but exceeding the benefits of other options at a lower more cost-effective price that doesn’t compromise on performance.

“Our solution allows operators to improve workflow with fewer interruptions such as having to consistently refill the water tank, refill the tape or adjust the tape dimensions. Small interruptions such as these can have big knock-on effects on the entire logistics operation.

And in a world where there is no longer room to be behind on operation speed, such constraints can be detrimental in staying ahead.”

The OM700 also provides an optional automatic measuring sensor which will auto-dispense tape to fit the exact size without wasted tape and a foot pedal for hands free operation.

Equipped with a safety interlock switch to disable the cutting blade when the front cover is open, O’Driscoll explained how the OM700 is built with the safety of staff at the forefront.

Investing in energy saving solutions can reap cost and operational benefits.

The food and drink industry consumes high amounts of energy, but solutions are available which can help producers reduce waste, rein in costs and improve operational efficiency. Mark Yates, of compressed air and fluid power specialist Thorite, outlines them here.

Energy consumption in food and drink facilities is high, with everything from heating and cooling to cleaning in place (CIP) and packaging processes all demanding consistently high levels of use.

An ISO 11011 certified energy audit is the ideal way to investigate energy use and energy waste to identify where savings can be made.

A number of solutions will then be suggested to reduce energy consumption in the long term.

Flow rate sensors A flow rate sensor projects acoustic sounds into the media and measures the sound waves to determine a speed or flow rate. It can also detect the content of the media, identifying how clean the water is.

One food company had its CIP process set to one hour. Thorite installed a FLOWave SAW (Surface Acoustic Waves) flowmeter, which identified that the water was clear in around 30 minutes. The company reduced the cleaning time accordingly, reducing energy use and dramatically reducing water consumption. Payback was achieved within six months and savings are ongoing.

Data logging Monitoring and analysing an asset’s air delivery or usage helps identify

patterns and anomalies in the system’s performance and indicate how and where energy savings can be made.

Energy use can then be optimised, improving productivity, enhancing reliability, extending equipment lifespan and providing a sound foundation for a proactive maintenance programme.

Isolation valves Leakages in compressed air systems lead to wasted energy and asset underperformance.

A full leak survey is the ideal solution, but this potentially costly situation can be partially remedied by installing a solenoid operated isolation, or shut-off, valve.

Wired into the compressor’s start-stop button, it controls the air supply to a machine – automatically shutting down the compressor when the machine it is powering stops.

This removes the need for operatives to shut the compressor off manually and therefore removes the risk of the airline being left blowing, consuming energy unnecessarily.

Voltage optimisation The EU-wide standardisation of voltage in the 1990s means some factories are over-supplied with energy from the national grid and are therefore paying excessively high energy bills.

A voltage optimisation audit – so simple that Thorite provides them cost-free - will establish whether a VO is worth your investment.

A major food producer which installed a voltage optimiser achieved a reduction in energy consumption of 463,176 KWh a year, reducing annual electricity costs by £40,226.84. It also achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions totalling 243 tonnes a year.

Reducing your energy waste will not only cut costs and improve asset performance, but also provide a solid foundation for a cost-efficient ongoing maintenance plan.
