Forget the faceless bottles gathering dust at the back of your cupboard, Proud Mary Extra Virgin Olive Oil refuses to blend into the background. This is EVOO with character: single press, single source, and bursting with bold, complex Turkish flavour. Think creamy richness with high notes of fresh grass, basil, and sunripened tomatoes, finished with a lingering buttery kiss.
The New Queen of the Kitchen Counter
Proud Mary isn’t just another olive oil, it’s a centrepiece, a conversation starter, and an ingredient that elevates every dish. Wrapped in a striking pink and gold tin, it seriously stands out on the shelf, but beyond the bold aesthetic lies a product with a serious flavour to savour.
Advertising industry veterans Calum Ward and Vikesh Amey Bhatt set out to disrupt the stale, traditional EVOO aisle, a sea of generic green labels and tired rustic imagery.
“We wanted to create an olive oil that looked as good as it tasted,” says Calum. “Something that makes people excited to hold.”
The result? A modern classic with rock ’n’ roll spirit. The brand is inspired by ancient mysticism and musical rebellion, the design tells the legend of Proud Mary, the Divine Queen of Extra Virgin Rock ’n’ Roll, a mythical force whose guitar riffs made olive trees sway and fruit flourish.
Flavour First, Always
More than just a pretty tin, Proud Mary delivers where it matters most— on the plate. This is premium, small-batch olive oil, crafted for dipping, drizzling, and unapologetic over-pouring.
“I’ve been drowning my food in olive oil for years,” says Vikesh. “Now, I finally have one that deserves it.”
Now Stocked in London’s Best Delis
Proud Mary is already making waves across London, now stocked at Selfridges, Eat17, Superette, Kitchen Provisions, and online via Delli. From Leyton to Liverpool, it’s fast becoming the EVOO of choice for chefs, home cooks, and anyone who refuses to settle for ordinary. The duo have recently paired with MasterChef Professional James Sharp on a content series for Instagram.
Next time you reach for olive oil, make it Proud Mary—because great dishes deserve it.
Line upgrade for Jägermeister’s small-bottle range
No matter where you are in the world, when you see a bottle of Jägermeister, you can be sure of this: it was produced and bottled in Germany, the original home of the world-famous herbal liqueur. And now, the spirits producer has updated its production facilities in Wolfenbüttel-Linden – with the help of Krones technology. The distinctive bottle in particular but also its 20-millilitre “mini” version called for a customised approach.
The name Jägermeister is known the world over. The namesake company, Mast-Jägermeister SE, has established a strong international reputation with its herbal liqueur and equally recognisable brand. On the one hand, it’s got the iconic logo featuring a stag with a radiant cross between its antlers. And on the other, the distinctive green bottle, whose flattened rectangular silhouette is unmistakably Jägermeister. It’s a look that Jägermeister uses consistently across its entire product line – in all sizes from the large, 1.75-litre and even 3-litre bottles to the standard 0.5 and 0.7 litres right through to the 20-millilitre “mini meister”.
Modifications to the filler make it possible to fill not only the 40-, 50- and 100-millilitre bottles but also the tiny 20-millilitre bottles.

The first talks at Jägermeister about modernising the line began in 2020. Initially, the thought was to simply replace some of the machines. But it quickly became clear that more needed to be done, because, as Bettina Riemenschneider-Schilling states: “Up until then, we had only been filling 40-, 50- and 100-millilitre bottles on that line. In our brainstorming sessions, we quickly realised that we needed this line to handle our smallest bottles as well, which are just 20 millilitres. So, the original plan to replace a few machines grew into something bigger.”
Shaping the future together
It’s important to look beyond the short term, which is why Krones is working on “Solutions beyond tomorrow”. Be it beverage and food production lines, digital services or plastics recycling: Krones’ innovative solutions combine superior performance with sustainability.
Jägermeister had been filling its 20-millilitre bottles on just a single line –likewise from Krones and of a similar age (1994). According to RiemenschneiderSchilling, it was “still doing a good job. But we didn’t have a backup if that line went down.” So, it made sense to account for this bottle size when updating Line 4 – though it brought some challenges.
Tweaking the filling process
“It was a real tour de force on the part of Krones and the Jägermeister team,” says a smiling Bettina RiemenschneiderSchilling. Some of the company’s ideas required Krones to develop truly one-of-a-kind solutions. For instance at the filler, as Florian Gier of Krones’ sales team states: “Normally, when filling spirits, bottles are pressed up to the filling valves and subsequently overfilled a bit. The excess product in the bottle (which we’ll call the “corrective amount” here) is then extracted and fed back into the product bowl. That requires the entire bowl be kept under vacuum, which causes the alcohol to gradually evaporate. So, you have to keep the product at a higher alcohol content in order to get the desired alcohol content into the bottle in the end.” And that is precisely what Jägermeister wanted to avoid.
Krones designed its Modulfill HVT filler in such a way that the “corrective” amount of liqueur is no longer fed directly back into the product bowl but instead pumped back by way of a separate channel. The advantage of this setup is that the entire product bowl no longer has to be kept under vacuum but instead only the much smaller “corrective” channel does.
Krones also made a small but important change to the filling process itself to enable reliable handling of even the 20-millilitre bottle: Instead of a lift cylinder pressing the bottle up to the valve, the valve is lowered to the bottle and its short tube inserted directly.

Three Robins Unveils Improved Recipes, Brand Identity & Scotmid Listing
Yet more positive strides for oat mylk disruptor, Three Robins, who are excited to unveil their swish new identity for its two, core oat mylk lines, Barista Oat and Choccoriffic, just in time for their gamechanging 177 Scotmid launch (Feb 25); secured courtesy of a popular ‘Scottish Favourites’ initiative
Initially launched back in 2022, Three Robins has added some much needed ‘underbird’ momentum to a category for the most part, dominated by vast, conveyor belt operations. Initially conceived by mother-of-3, Karen Robinson, who was simply unable to source for her son a credible, plantbased milk that reflected met her low-in-sugar yet rich in nutritional integrity needs, Karen has now evolved her recipes yet further by removing the last trace of added sugar that resided within the original Chocolate Milk, whilst removing the acidity regulator (dipotassium phosphate) from the Barista Oat Milk further underpinning its ‘clean deck’ credentials.
If that wasn’t exciting enough, Three Robins has now scaled sufficiently over the last year to transition 100% to best-in-class Scottish Oats, a long-standing ambition for proud Dunediner, Karen Robinson.
According to Karen, the thinking behind our new look engaging look was four-fold:
• Improve our shelf presence by playing to our bold, non-corporate strengths
• Create a brand with all-encompassing family appeal
• Clearly reaffirm our proud Scottish origins
• Underline the truth that our chocolate milk has 50% less sugars than any other flavoured milk drink (dairy or dairy-free) whilst celebrating the gluten-free nature of our Barista Oat Mylk
With latest Mintel data suggesting that 30% of UK consumers are searching the dairy-free aisle and 1 in 4 trying a milk-free substitute over the last 12 months, it’s clear to see the opportunity for a dairy mylk with appetite appeal, growth ambitions and a superior, vitamin-rich ingredient deck
Karen concludes, ‘We may be a new voice in the chiller cabinet but thanks to timely grants from the likes of Scottish Enterprise, Food & Drink Federation Scotland and Mission Ventures we’ve been able to fast-track our range evolution. Of course, budgetary support is invaluable but we place just as much credit to like-minded voices who’ve been on hand to sense-check our thinking and provide moral support (Buy Women Built, The Kids Food Collective and Female Founders Rise.’

Product Recalls: The Curse of the Manufacturer
Product recalls in the UK food and drink industry remain a significant challenge, with the latest RQA (Research Quality Association) Group report highlighting a concerning increase in the number of products recalled per event. While the number of UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) alerts in 2024 remained relatively low, the volume of products affected per alert has risen to 2.5 times higher than in 2023.
An article By Roy Green, Harford Control Ltd.
Allergen Control: One of the Leading Causes of Recalls
Allergen mislabelling remains the top reason for product recalls. While the percentage of ‘Never Event’ recalls—those deemed entirely preventable—has decreased to 27% in 2024, these incidents continue to pose a serious threat to consumers. Historically, ‘Never Event’ mislabelling alerts accounted for over 40% to 50% of recalls, meaning progress is being made, but challenges remain. A ‘Never Event’ recall is defined by RQA as a recall that can cause serious harm and should be easily prevented. E.g. Wrong label on pack or product put in wrong packaging with allergen safety implications.
Recent incidents underscore the ongoing risk. Birds Eye Ltd. recalled Goodfella’s Stonebaked Thin Garlic Bread because it contained cheese, an undeclared allergen posing a health risk to those with a dairy intolerance or allergy. This case, as with others, highlights the critical need for stringent allergen control measures throughout the supply chain.
March 2025
Microbiological
Contamination:
A Rising Threat
The RQA report also revealed an 80% increase in recall events caused by microbiological contamination, with Listeria and Salmonella leading the list of concerns. Despite this surge, the total number of products recalled due to contamination is 426 fewer than last year, suggesting more successfully targeted recall efforts.
Listeria monocytogenes contamination remains a major concern, particularly for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Lidl Northern Ireland recently recalled a batch of Deluxe Sriracha Cheddar Cheese Wedge after Listeria was detected. This bacterium can cause flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, lead to lifethreatening complications such as meningitis.
Salmonella-related recalls also continue to impact the industry, particularly in high-risk food categories like meat and ready-to-eat products. Contaminated foods can lead to severe gastrointestinal illness, prompting swift action from manufacturers and retailers to prevent outbreaks.
Foreign Bodies and Fraudulent Lab Results
Foreign body contamination, particularly involving metal fragments, is another leading cause of recalls, tied in third place with nonallergen-related labelling errors. The presence of metal fragments in food poses a serious risk of injury, making it a key focus area for quality control teams.
Additionally, food fraud remains a pressing issue, with the UK’s National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) issuing an amber food crime alert regarding document fraud in laboratory results. Fraudulent lab reports undermine food safety assessments, legislative compliance, and supplier approval processes. This alarming trend highlights the need for robust traceability and verification systems to ensure consumer safety and maintain trust in food products.
Preventing Recalls: The Role of Technology and HACCP
To mitigate these risks, food manufacturers must implement rigorous quality control measures, including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) strategies, which help identify potential contamination risks at every stage of production. Effective traceability systems and accurate labelling solutions are also essential in preventing mislabelling errors and ensuring that recalled products can be efficiently removed from circulation.
Harford Control: Ensuring Accuracy and Traceability
Harford Control provides Autocoding Solutions to ensure accurate labelling, ensuring that the right information appears on the right label and that the correct label is applied to the right packaging. The solution plays a crucial role in preventing Never Event recalls, minimising the risk of allergen mislabelling and enhancing overall food safety compliance.
Additionally, Harford’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) enables manufacturers to track and trace approved materials while monitoring non-compliant products. By providing full traceability of ingredients and finished goods, LIMS strengthens laboratory quality control and ensures compliance with stringent food safety regulations. It also facilitates efficient recall management when necessary.
Harford Autocoding and LIMS Solutions can be integrated seamlessly. Any batches from the shop floor will automatically initiate certain actions based on predefined risks, thereby protecting the consumer.
Smart Solutions to Prevent Recalls
Product recalls are avoidable, through diligent attention to detail, and risks, at each stage of food and drink manufacturing, thereby ensuring that the customer obtains only the food, plus allergens, as stated on the packaging. Mix ups or misunderstandings may still occur at the retail or fast-food outlet, which can be reduced, if not eliminated,
through better training, supervision and communication. In time, the consumer will also become better informed.
To this end, the Natasha Foundation (set up in memory of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, whose life was tragically cut short through eating an apparently allergen-free bread roll that contained sesame seed extract, purchased on confident assurances of safety from Pret a Manger) are doing brilliant work to raise awareness of allergen risks and only last week introducing a training programme for schools called ‘Allergy School’. In the UK alone, there are on average two children per class suffering from allergies.
As recalls continue to evolve in complexity, leveraging advanced solutions such as Autocoding and LIMS to minimise risk, is key to protecting consumers, ensuring regulatory compliance and maintaining brand integrity.

Evolution or revolution? Meeting consumer expectations for active nutrition in 2025
By Sam Lubbock-Smith, ACI Group
The food and beverage industry is highly competitive: categories are becoming blurred, and product democratisation means that items previously aimed at niche consumers and age groups are now available to all.
This, coupled with a rise in savvy and informed shoppers, has resulted in a fundamental change in attitudes and preferences for new products, seeing it shift and expand to functional products that offer not only health and wellness positioning but are backed by science.
Until recently, the food and nutraceutical industry approached a new year by questioning what trends would have the biggest impact. ‘What’s new?’ was the common refrain, rather than ‘What’s changed?’ ‘What’s evolving?’ or ‘What’s redefining itself?’
At ACI, we not only track contemporary trends, but continuously horizon scan to cut through the noise, looking beyond the trend to understand the deeper movements that will drive new formulations in the year ahead.
Functional ingredients: driving a new wave of change
In terms of functional ingredients for active nutrition, we believe that products and formats in the category are well-defined.
Allergen-free, plant and vegetable-based, clean labels are all USPs that have driven the category in the past. While this is still relevant, these attributes must be coupled to functional benefits, for instance, the ability to enhance cardiometabolic health, or solutions aimed at men’s sexual health or the ageing population.
This has prompted us not only to ask what the biggest trends in active nutrition are for the year ahead, but how and where our ingredients and product solutions can impact most - whether you are developing a new formulation or product or simply reformulating an existing product to enhance bioavailability, texture or flavour.
It’s not always about what is new, but what can we do better to enhance the scope and availability of nutrient-dense and bioavailable products that can make a positive difference to the health and well-being of consumers.
In the past, many brands oversubscribed their product offering –taking a ‘more is better’ approach. This is now shifting with a new dynamic that focuses on creating ‘platforms’ with a select product portfolio. Formulating fewer products but harnessing the unique power of nutraceuticals means that brands can now focus on building a core offering that offers tangible results.
At ACI we believe when it comes to health-supporting supplements and nutraceuticals, staying ahead of consumer trends isn’t simply good business sense – it’s an essential part of what we do.
Our partnership with DolCas Biotech is a prime example. As a leader in clinically researched health ingredients, its branded solutions not only make bold claims but are backed by solid science that can significantly impact active nutrition formats.
In this article, we explore 5 key areas for new product development growth in 2025. Coupled with selected nutraceutical ingredients, we are confident that these trend snapshots will allow you to enhance your NPD or reformulate existing products – meeting the key requirements of brands and customers.
1. Specialist ingredients: winning the inflammation battle
One of the biggest health concerns facing consumers today is inflammation and its impact on whole-body health. Inflammation has already been identified as a culprit instead of just a side effect
in many illnesses and has a role to play in many so-called lifestyle illnesses and conditions including heart disease, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
While inflammation is a natural response to injury, chronic inflammation can cause serious and permanent harm to the body. In this fight, specialised ingredients that target the root causes of the inflammation can be a game changer.
Turmeric and its active compound curcumin have long been viewed as a natural inflammation buster and many offers anti-inflammatory effects in people with chronic inflammatory diseases.
A study conducted in 2020, is just one of many which found that curcumin could offer positive benefits due to its antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties.
The branded ingredient Curcugen is a next-generation curcumin formula and a clinically researched turmeric extract that boasts a whopping 39 to 52 times more bioavailability than standard curcumin extracts.
It works by utilising turmeric’s natural components to enhance absorption and efficacy, allowing for lower doses with higher results. Not only does it improve overall bioavailability, but it also delivers a less bitter taste and is more food and beverage friendly.
Studies have shown Curcugen’s potential in supporting cardiovascular health and reducing inflammation, making it an excellent addition to supplements aimed at combating chronic inflammation.
2. Health hacks: optimising the gut/brain axis
Categories in active nutrition are often remarkably similar, so it is important that you differentiate your product from competitors.
While personalisation has long been touted as a key trend in new formulations, we are now seeing a shift to highimpact daily essentials that are available to all consumers by integrating nutrition and lifestyle changes to enhance our health and well-being.
Products that offer a health hack, such as those targeted a gut health could have a dual function that impacts cognitive health. This gut-brain axis (GBA) allows bidirectional communication between the central and the enteric nervous system, linking the emotional and cognitive centres of the brain with peripheral intestinal functions. Recent advances in research have described the importance of gut microbiota in influencing these interactions.
Ginfort® is a concentrated ginger extract and functional ingredient that supports gut health. Up to 26% of its bioactive compounds are derived from ginger roots, offering a potent dose of gingerol and shogaol, which are known for their antiinflammatory and digestive benefits. Its highly bioavailable, patented formula allows it to be effective in extremely low doses, making it an attractive option for formulators seeking to add a gut-brain health hack to their product lines.
3. Ageing populations: targeting sexual health & beauty from within
The active nutrition space is also evolving to meet the needs of specific demographics, particularly the ageing population. One of the areas under scrutiny is how ageing, characterised by physiological, pathological, behavioural, and psychosocial changes, may affect sexual functioning.
While there has been relatively little research into sexuality in old age, available surveys show that some form of sexual activity usually continues until the end of life. For example, in a sample of people aged 80-102, 62% of the men and
30% of the women were still having sexual intercourse. It is problematic that some clinicians tend to ignore this aspect of the lives of elderly people, who themselves can find sexual problems difficult to talk about. However, it is wrong to assume that little can be done about problems at this stage in life, as many causes are potentially reversible.
Fortiquin®, a botanical blend inspired by Ayurvedic practices, is designed to address male sexual health and stamina. The branded ingredient is clinically tested and proven to increase stamina fivefold by blending botanicals with amino acids to create a natural but potent solution for male vitality.
The healthy ageing demographic is also invested in beauty from within as consumers recognise the connection between nutrition and overall wellness. Morikol® is a marine collagen tripeptide that taps into the growing trend for whole-body wellness. Its unique tripeptide structure ensures better absorption and utilisation in the body – ideal for consumers seeking natural performance and overall health and wellbeing enhancers.
4. The substance behind the logo: cardiometabolic health
Cardiometabolic health remains one of the top concerns for consumers, particularly as heart disease continues to be a leading cause of death globally. It is estimated that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality globally with up to 20.5 million CVD-related deaths reported in 2021.
Bergacyn®FF offers a unique blend of bergamot citrus and Cynara cardunculus (artichoke leaf) extract, formulated to support liver health, reduce fat storage, and promote healthy weight management.
Bergacyn’s clinical studies demonstrate its effectiveness in lowering liver fat and improving lipid transport, two critical factors in metabolic health. The combination of polyphenols and other bioactive compounds enhances bioavailability and provides a comprehensive solution for heart and liver wellness, helping to support consumers battling obesity or metabolic syndrome. The ingredient is free-flowing, solvent-free, and offers a clean-label option for formulators – perfect for your next formulation targeting CVD.
5. Performance 2.0: from athletes to everyday fitness
In the past, products targeting performance nutrition was seen for elite athletes, but the category is evolving, now catering to a broader audience of everyday fitness enthusiasts.
With performance an everyday lifestyle ambition, the sports nutrition market is expanding to offer products that support or enhance natural performance. Here, NitrateBurst™, a spinachderived nitrate extract is capitalising on the growing trend of clean-label performance enhancers. As a natural source of nitrates, NitrateBurst supports nitric oxide production, which plays a crucial role in blood flow and endurance during exercise.
For fitness enthusiasts, whether competitive athletes or weekend warriors, NitrateBurst offers an edge in stamina and cardiovascular support. Clinical studies show that it enhances energy levels, improves endurance, and supports healthy blood pressure—all without synthetic additives or stimulants –meeting demand for growing cleaner labels and plant-based performance enhancers.
A dynamic new future in active nutrition
As we look ahead to 2025, it’s clear that the active nutrition market is on a steady upward trajectory. The global demand for functional food and beverages, once the domain of niche health products, is now expanding rapidly. Consumers are not just seeking new products—they are searching for products and ingredients that offer tangible, science-backed benefits that align with their evolving health needs.
From anti-inflammatory supplements to gut health - and from men’s health solutions to performance boosters, the future of active nutrition lies in effective, and scientifically validated ingredients. For brands, the key to success is staying ahead of consumer expectations, leveraging innovative ingredients that not only meet health goals but are also easy to incorporate into everyday life.

Growing concern about the effects of climate change on food security is accelerating the search for new sources of alternative protein. Climate change is contributing to land and water scarcity, placing pressure on the world’s food supply as the population continues to grow. There’s also heightened awareness of the environmental impact of livestock farming, which generates an estimated 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Alternative proteins have become increasingly evident in the food chain in the UK and other Western countries since the 1980s. Today, mycoprotein is widely used in meat substitutes, such as Quorn in the UK, as are plant-based proteins, such as pea protein, for example in products made by Beyond Meat. Recognising that many consumers are interested in where food comes from as well as its nutritional value, Eat Just, Inc in California, has recently introduced a new plant-based alternative to egg protein made from mung beans.
Manufacturing alternative proteins at scale and driving down the price of mass production is a key challenge as the push towards food sustainability gathers momentum. To make products from plant-based protein more cheaply, companies are innovating new processing technologies. For example, Japanese company, Hitachi Zosen, has developed machinery that can reduce labgrown meat production costs by 90%.
Compounding the cost issue, there is also a cultural aversion to some forms of alternative protein, such as insect protein, particularly in Western countries. In countries such as Mexico and Thailand, insects are considered part of a healthy diet, and they are regarded as a delicacy due to them being a highprotein, low-fat food source. In the UK, research on insects as a form of edible protein is gathering momentum, in a growing community supported by the UK Edible Insect Association (UKEIA), and the recently-launched National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC).
Whilst plant-based meat alternatives are now widely available due to growing consumer demand for healthy, cruelty-free alternatives to conventional meat products, the market for cultured or labgrown meat products has been much slower to develop. As well as being relatively costly to produce, these products may lack the taste, smell and ‘mouth feel’ of meat products, which can make them less appetising to consumers. Whilst food scientists explore ways to make them more ‘meat-like’, cultured meat products are already being used as nutritional additives in popular processed foods such as nuggets and burgers. Innovative companies such as Eat Just, Inc have a growing number of patent applications
to cultured meat technologies, such as for producing cultured chicken. In addition to human foods, environmentally friendly pet foods such as those from London-based company, Meatly, are on the rise. Other innovations, such as described in a patent application by Aleph foods, are directed towards improving the sensory properties of cultured meat.
There are lots of exciting developments underway and AI models are helping to accelerate innovation and aid the discovery of new alternative proteins. These models could help food scientists to develop new protein-rich, meat-free products that are cost-efficient and have the right sensory attributes.
For innovators of cultured meats in particular, there is a significant commercial opportunity for those that are first to mass produce a highly marketable, cost-efficient and appetising product. It’s crucial to secure patent protection for innovations at an early stage to safeguard the investment in their research and to also minimise issues when they later look to collaborate (under the right formal agreement) with a large-scale food processor.

Five Steps to Take Now To Comply with New Food Waste Legislation
On 31 March 2025, businesses across England will face a significant shift in waste management practices as new recycling regulations come into effect.
The legislation mandates that all food waste must be separated from other waste and collected by an approved contractor. This change aligns with the government’s broader environmental goals, aiming to reduce landfill waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and promote a circular economy.
While this policy presents opportunities for businesses to enhance sustainability, it also introduces challenges that require careful planning and proactive action, as the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) estimates that food waste costs the UK hospitality and food service sector around £2.5 billion each year.
A New Approach to Waste Management
The introduction of mandatory food waste separation will require businesses to rethink their current waste disposal practices. For many, this means investing in new bins, adjusting internal processes, and training employees to ensure compliance. Businesses in the hospitality, retail, and food production sectors—where food waste is a significant byproduct—will likely feel the impact most acutely. However, the regulation extends to all businesses that employ more than 10 people, necessitating widespread operational changes. Micro businesses on the other hand, have a grace period till April 2027 for making mandatory changes.
By properly segregating food waste, businesses can improve overall recycling rates and reduce the volume of general waste sent to landfill. This is a crucial step toward meeting the UK’s net-zero targets, as food waste has a significant negative impact on the environment by releasing methane – a harmful greenhouse gas that is 25 times more puissant than carbon dioxide.
Additionally, properly segregated food waste can be converted into valuable resources such as compost or biogas through anaerobic digestion, offering environmental and economic benefits.
Challenges and How to Overcome Them
While the benefits of the new regulations are clear, businesses must prepare for several challenges.
Cost Implications
One of the primary concerns is the potential increase in costs. Many businesses will need to invest in new waste containers, adjust waste collection contracts, and possibly pay higher fees for food waste collection services. To mitigate these costs, companies should explore waste reduction strategies, such as monitoring food inventory more closely to prevent over-ordering and waste. Additionally, partnering with food redistribution charities can help divert surplus food to those in need while reducing disposal costs.
However, the cost of food disposal is lower than the cost of general waste disposal. Although an additional container and contract may incur additional costs, complying with this legislation can also provide grounds for cost savings. This is because as food waste is generally quite heavy, segregating food waste from general waste will reduce the overall weight of the general waste output, hereby reducing general waste disposal costs too.
Space Constraints
For small businesses, particularly those operating in urban areas with limited space, finding room for additional waste bins may be challenging. In such cases, businesses should work closely with waste management providers to optimise bin placement and collection schedules. Shared collection points between neighbouring businesses could also be a viable solution.
Employee Training and Compliance
Ensuring that all employees understand and adhere to the new waste separation requirements is another key challenge. Misplaced waste can lead to contamination, resulting in fines or rejected collections. Businesses should implement clear signage, conduct staff training sessions, and establish internal monitoring systems to promote compliance. Engaging employees by explaining the environmental and financial benefits of proper waste segregation can also encourage participation.
Finding the Right Waste Contractor
Businesses will need to work with approved waste contractors to ensure compliance with the legislation. This means researching providers, comparing services, and negotiating contracts well ahead of the deadline. Local councils and trade associations may offer guidance on selecting a reliable waste management partner. However, partnering with companies such as Everflow could ease the aforementioned steps as all the previous legwork has already been completed.
Preparing Early: The Key to a Smooth Transition
With just a few weeks to go until the legislation takes effect, businesses should take proactive steps to ensure a seamless transition. The following actions will help companies prepare effectively:
1. Conduct a Waste Audit – Assess current waste disposal practices to understand the volume of food waste generated and identify areas for improvement.
2. Engage with Waste Contractors Early – Reach out to approved waste collection providers to discuss service options and pricing.
3. Invest in the Right Infrastructure – Purchase appropriate bins and ensure they are strategically placed for easy access by staff.
4. Train Employees – Educate staff on the new requirements and create clear guidelines for food waste segregation.
5. Monitor and Adjust – Implement a tracking system to measure waste reduction progress and refine processes as needed.
The Road Ahead
The 31 March 2025 deadline represents an opportunity for businesses to rethink their approach to waste management and contribute to a more sustainable future. While challenges exist, early preparation and strategic planning will help businesses adapt smoothly to the new requirements. Embracing these changes not only ensures compliance but can also lead to cost savings, improved corporate reputation, and positive environmental impact. By taking action now, businesses can turn this regulatory shift into an opportunity for improved sustainability.

New food fraud tech set to transform herb and spice authentication
Newly launched technology is set to enable organisations across the food supply chain to reduce the time required to authenticate herb and spice samples from days to minutes.
The technology has been developed for the UK’s leading food authentication provider, Belfast-based Bia Analytical, by cloud engineering company Storm Reply. It takes the form of a web-based portal.
Despite the high risk of food fraud, previously authenticity testing could take up to two weeks to complete and would be limited to a small sample size due to volume-based cost.
The launch of Bia Analytical’s portal means food testing laboratories – and other organisations across the supply chain – can access and benefit from its leading authenticity models.
The portal combines advanced chemometrics, AI-powered modelling and spectroscopy, using Bia Analytical’s scientific models to identify authenticity instantly. For the user, it displays complex analytics in easy-to-understand dashboards and can be accessed by standard web browsers, meaning professionals across different locations and organisations can view the same information at the same time.
It can also be connected to handheld spectrometers, which Bia Analytical launched as a new portable authentication service in 2024. Government bodies, food manufacturers and retailers are currently using the portable service to rapidly screen herbs and spices, and enhance audit and quality control processes.
Developers at Storm Reply used Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services to create a bespoke portal for the instant herb and spice analysis. The speed and accessibility of instant digital testing may act as an incentive to test more frequently and at higher volumes, according to developers.
Storm Reply partner Rachel Grunwerg said: “Food analysis is an industry which needs modernisation. Bia Analytical brought us some challenging requirements which couldn’t be met by off-the-shelf solutions, and it’s been hugely rewarding working in partnership with them to digitise the testing process and demonstrate how it can benefit the whole supply chain and consumers.”
Manual authenticity analysis is a time-consuming and complex process, delaying decision making in the supply chain. Rapidly speeding up testing, without impacting quality and accuracy, could help the UK tackle a food fraud crisis costing the industry at least £12bn according to the University of Portsmouth.
Commenting on the new technology, Bia Analytical’s CEO Simon Cole said: “With food supply chains being long and complex, fraud can occur at any point from the farm to the supermarket shelf. Testing more and testing faster are key for achieving food safety and security.
“We knew there was a better way of helping the industry to make faster decisions. By providing anyone access to our
scientific models through the cloud we’re significantly increasing testing capacity in the market, as well as freeing up our scientists to develop new models for other commodities.”
Initially Bia Analytical’s platform is being used to test herbs and spices, following a 2021 EU study which found more than half of products in the market contained “some amount of undeclared plant material”. Most affected by fraud was oregano, with 48% of samples bulked out to unapproved levels usually with olive leaves, followed by pepper, cumin, turmeric and saffron.
The modelling technology can be applied to almost any commodity, formulation or specification in the supply chain such as high-risk commodities including meat, fish, soybeans, cocoa and coffee.
Reducing the time of analysis is as important for a commercial lab as it is for a food manufacturer or retailer. Reading Scientific Services Ltd (RSSL) has partnered with Bia Analytical to conduct a critical beta test aimed at advancing the development of the new food authenticity testing technology.
Bia Analytical’s Simon Cole stated: “This collaboration underscores the importance of ensuring that our rigorously validated cloud solution, developed alongside our trusted partner, Storm Reply, can be successfully used and integrated by external laboratories.”
Mark Wilson, Senior Group Manager at RSSL added: “Saving time on complex sample analysis has the potential to transform our day-to-day authenticity testing process. That’s why we’re pleased to partner with Bia Analytical on this essential beta test to verify the ability of the novel system to work seamlessly on our laboratory hardware. This partnership highlights the key technical considerations for system integration while reinforcing the solutions’ reliability and subsequent commercial effectiveness for instant food authenticity analysis.”
Bia Analytical’s Simon Cole concluded: “The current smallscale trials with the new authenticator portal show that the technology works and is accurate and secure. We’ll be offering the technology to more food testing labs throughout the coming year which will complement the transformation of quality control processes in the field by high-volume food manufacturers and grocery retailers.”

Whet Your Appetite: Making Design Tasty in 2025
In a world where consumers make splitsecond decisions in the supermarket aisle or on delivery apps, branding is more important than ever. In 2025, food and drink brands need to balance aesthetics with authenticity, using design to create emotional connections with customers. VistaPrint’s community of professional designers has picked out the top visual design trends which are shaping food and drink packaging this year.
Bold flavours, bold branding
Minimalism has its moments, but in 2025, it’s all about making an impact. Consumers are craving bold, expressive branding that tells a story at first glance. Think layered textures, oversized typography, and dynamic colour clashes. Tony’s Chocolonely is a perfect example, with exaggerated serif fonts and use of bright primary colours. While the packaging is fun, it’s also user-friendly, and the unique font in the word “Tony’s” is instantly recognisable.
Dalston’s Soda takes a different approach to this trend, using simple, bold typography that shows customers their drink ingredients are straightforward and uncomplicated. Meanwhile, the brand also uses fun, bright shades like bubblegum pink and canary yellow (a top trending colour to use in 2025) and a dynamic logo to add a touch of fun to the branding. On the can, a large, stylised letter ‘D’ is formed by an illustration of two hands: one squeezing a fruit press, and the other holding a bowl with fruit inside. This visual directly connects to the brand’s focus on real, natural ingredients, making consumers think about the freshly squeezed fruit in the drink.
Fonts That Leave a Lasting Taste
This year, expect to see more hand-crafted fonts on food packaging. Brands like Oatly execute this style perfectly, combining bold, industrial-style block letters with playful, handwritten fonts. The brand’s quirky, imperfect typography mirrors its unique brand voice while maintaining a contemporary edge. The blend of raw, textured lettering with casual, hand-drawn elements creates a balance between approachability and standout shelf presence.
Similarly, BrewDog’s “Stoopid” Black Forest Gateau beer uses a dripping, gooey font that feels almost cartoonish. The distorted lettering looks like it’s melting right off the can, making it eye-catching, and reminiscent of the chocolate flavour inside. This trend of mixing industrial precision with organic, hand-rendered type gives brands a fresh and relevant feel that resonates with today’s consumers.
Eco-Aesthetics: Sustainability in Every Detail
Sustainability is not just a corporate responsibility but a design priority. Brands are embedding eco-consciousness into their visual storytelling, ensuring that their packaging reflects their values as much as their ingredients do. Two Farmers Crisps embodies this with imagery of farmers in the fields, paired with a natural, blue-toned colour palette, which reinforces their connection to local, sustainable agriculture. Meanwhile, Abel & Cole uses a bold, blocky font with a distressed texture that mimics recycled paper. The ampersand, creatively adorned with a sprouting plant, serves as a subtle nod to the company’s organic and environmentally-friendly ethos, making the logo feel both fresh and grounded in nature.
In 2025, food and drink branding is all about making a statement, whether through bold maximalism, nostalgia-fuelled storytelling or sustainability-led aesthetics. To win over consumers, brands must create designs that don’t just look good but feel personal and purposeful too.

The 2025 Packaging Startup Awards, organised by ThePackHub and sponsored by Ocado Retail, honoured five groundbreaking startups at Packaging Innovations & Empack 2025, recognising their contributions to sustainable packaging solutions.
Blue Ocean Closures, PulpaTronics, GreenEvo, Cauli, and AeroFlexx were recognised across five categories for their cuttingedge solutions, with PulpaTronics also securing the prestigious Packaging Startup of the Year Award. Their innovations span a range of sustainability challenges, from reducing plastic waste and improving recyclability to enabling reuse systems and lowering carbon footprints.
Blue Ocean Closures won the Alternative Materials category for its cellulose fibre screw cap, which provides a sustainable alternative to plastic and metal closures. With traditional caps often being fossil-based, difficult to recycle, and contributors to microplastic pollution, Blue Ocean Closures’ solution offers a low-carbon footprint, is biodegradable within 10 weeks, and is recyclable as paper. Glenda Benedetti, Sales Manager at Blue Ocean Closures, highlighted the significance of the innovation, stating: “With the fibre-based screw cap for consumer packaging, Blue Ocean Closures is bringing to market an entirely new category of packaging closures. Enabling a seamless switch from fossil plastics, this bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable innovation will increase sustainability in the industry and reduce harmful climate effects.”
PulpaTronics secured the Connected Packaging Award for its breakthrough in RFID technology. Over 40 billion RFID tags are discarded in landfills each year, embedded in product packaging that is often single use. These tags traditionally contain metal antennas and silicon microchips, meaning they squander natural resources, generate CO2 emissions, and create waste. PulpaTronics has developed a chipless, metal-free RFID tag that uses laser technology to create conductive circuits on paper substrates, making them fully recyclable and compatible with
circular packaging systems. PulpaTronics’ innovation also earned it the coveted Packaging Startup of the Year Award, recognising its potential to transform inventory management while eliminating unnecessary electronic waste.
GreenEvo took home the Online category award for its innovative approach to reducing wooden pallet production’s environmental and economic impact. Traditional wooden pallets contribute to deforestation, require high energy consumption, and generate waste. GreenEvo has introduced an alternative made from renewable agricultural biomass, eliminating the need for tree cutting. Its lightweight, stackable design saves up to 60% of space in warehouses and during transportation, reducing carbon emissions. Unlike traditional pallets, GreenEvo’s solution requires no nails or screws, minimising the risk of injury to handlers and damage to goods.
In the Refill & Reuse category, Cauli was recognised for its AIpowered reusable packaging system. As a UK-based climate tech startup, Cauli is reshaping the future of packaging by helping businesses transition away from single-use packaging. Focusing initially on the food service industry, Cauli’s system enables the seamless adoption of reusable packaging, reducing waste and environmental impact while improving operational efficiency. “We are so pleased to be recognised for our passion and drive to make a circular economy both environmentally and commercially sustainable,” said Mingqiao Zhao, Co-Founder. “Through cuttingedge technology, we have achieved over 98% return rate for reusable packaging and helped catering customers around the UK to reduce single-use food & drink packaging waste and cost significantly.”
AeroFlexx won the Waste Reduction category for its approach to reducing plastic waste in liquid packaging. With less than 10% of plastic ever produced being recycled, most accumulate in landfills or the environment. AeroFlexx’s packaging solution replaces traditional plastic bottles with a lightweight, flexible format that functions like a rigid bottle while using up to 85% less virgin plastic. By addressing one of the most urgent challenges in packaging today, AeroFlexx is helping brands balance the needs of modern packaging with sustainability goals. Ensuring temperaturesensitive goods reach their destination unspoiled.
According to the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science the biopharma industry loses around $35 billion annually because of failures in temperature-controlled logistics. Aside from the medical and pharmaceutical industry, there are many other sectors such as the agriculture and horticulture sectors that likely face similar losses because of failures in temperature controlled logistics that prevent goods from reaching their destinations unspoiled.
Elmer Spruijt, VP, Global Sales at Descartes tells us about the importance of temperature control for freight, and explains more about the role and importance of technological integration, shipment temperature monitoring, and access to real-time data as part of the answer to this problem.
Maintaining the integrity of temperature-sensitive goods
Cold chain monitoring is often also referred to as freight temperature tracking. This is typically a system that is used to monitor and control the transportation of temperature-sensitive products through the supply chain journey. To ensure conditions are monitored and controlled, freight brokers, 3PLs, and shippers often use a freight temperature tracking solution. Other freight tech such as reefer trailer units and temperaturesensitive devices are used by carriers to maintain product quality, meet transportation management regulations, and provide the data to tracking solutions – and, in the realm of freight transportation, ensuring the integrity of temperature-sensitive goods during transit is paramount.
Whether it’s perishable food items, life-saving medications, or delicate plants, maintaining precise temperature conditions is essential to preserving product quality and safety. This is where temperature tracking and shipment temperature monitoring solutions come into play. By employing specialised freight technologies and strategic monitoring practices, businesses can effectively track and manage temperature conditions throughout the shipping process, mitigating the risk of spoilage, damage, and regulatory non-compliance.
Real-time data, real-time decision making
Many of today’s advanced temperature tracking systems come with a plethora of useful features. Access to consolidated realtime trailer data stands out as a key advantage. This is because, during transportation of freight, organisations have access to real-time data on load conditions at any time, from any carrier. This data can then be used to make informed business decisions and analyse patterns on the different lane routes, regions, and carriers.
Condition monitoring and alerting is key too as it provides organisations with the ability to set up alerting workflows and thresholds based on reefer trailer conditions. For instance, when trailer temperatures or conditions go above or below a certain threshold, users receive updates that their freight may be compromised. These updates allow brokers to adjust the conditions and/or contact the driver of the load to help protect product quality.
Load visibility is important too. More than just an alert or monitoring system, cold chain monitoring systems enable visibility and location tracking of a shipment, allowing brokers to keep up to date with delivery times and location, eliminating any need for manual check calls to drivers on the road. This load visibility data can also be communicated with customers in real-time to potentially adjust delivery windows in the case of delayed shipments – further access to reporting and analytics provides wider insights to operations and performance.
Mitigating spoilage risk and protecting freight brokers
Maintaining product quality is necessary during the transportation process. Delivering customers spoiled or damaged products is harmful to business relationships and costly to brokers’ wallets. There’s a diverse range of products that need monitoring in transit.
The list includes foods like meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables, which need to be refrigerated to maintain their freshness. Many medications and vaccinations become ineffective if not maintained below certain freezing points. Certain plants and flowers must maintain higher temperatures and humidity to prevent them from dying. Essentially, spoiled products mean losses for brokers and a bite out of their profit margins. Freight temperature tracking helps mitigate spoilage risk and protect freight brokers from losing out on high value shipments.
Therefore, with access to real-time condition data and load visibility from temperature monitoring systems, shippers, 3PLs
and brokers will have increased awareness of shipment status. They no longer have to guess or hope that shipment loads are in good condition during transportation. Real-time data and alerting capabilities keep organisations on track, and help them to improve responsiveness when issues arise.
Temperature tracking is driven by regulatory frameworks
Tracking temperature isn’t just a cost-saving opportunity; it is regulated by the federal government. Government agencies and administrations place condition-based regulations on the transportation of certain products to help prevent spoilage and protect consumers. For example, food products that aren’t regulated at a consistent temperature can lead to bacteria development and foodborne illnesses for those who consume them.
The U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has implemented the Sanitary Food Transportation Act (SFTA) which states: “Food may be at risk for physical, chemical, or biological contamination during food transport: Improper refrigeration or temperature control of food products (temperature abuse).”Similarly, the Covid-19 pandemic required cold transport of vaccines governed by CDC requirements: “Vaccines are to arrive in a thermal shipping container at ultra-cold temperatures between -90°C and -60°C (-130°F and -76°F).” Using a temperature tracking solution helps brokers adhere to regulations, prevent costly penalties and fines, and ensure the protection of consumers.
Conclusion
Shipping cold chain cargo and temperature-sensitive goods to customers means value must be placed on maintaining product quality. Further, maintaining product quality and meeting regulatory frameworks while shipping ensures that customers receive orders and / or products in good condition. Customers receiving products in poor condition is bad for business relationships – think of the financial penalties and reputational damage if or when the integrity of food products or pharmaceutical goods is compromised in transit. With cold chain monitoring and temperature tracking, brokers and shippers have better visibility into the condition of goods throughout their shipment journey and can more easily communicate with customers to improve their delivery processes and performance.
Freight temperature tracking helps keep organisations keep up to date with both load location and temperature data/ status, letting shippers and brokers relay the information to customers. This all builds trust and improves customer service satisfaction.
